FANTASTIC TIME FOR
GEARED UP
FOR GREAT ADVENTURES A LL outdoor campaigns start with the right equipment especially when it comes to a 4x4 trip. Having the right equipment and an appetite for adventure is all you need to explore all Victoria has to offer. Shepparton’s Bridgestone Service Centre on New Dookie Road (formally and locally known as Solar City Tyres) is also home to Shepparton 4x4 and Off-Road Centre. The 4x4 and Off-Road Centre is stockists of Australia’s own Ironman 4x4 gear, and the team specialise in suspension, bull bars and off-road touring gear. Anything you need to get outdoors for your 4x4, including advice for the complete novice or the well-versed traveller, is available here. Shepparton 4x4 and Off-Road Centre new manager, Jake Strawhorn, said the popularity of 4x4 adventures has only grown steadily despite the pandemic and thanks, in part, to closing the national borders. “We have so many great places to explore both locally and through out Victoria. People are looking to get out into the bush and enjoy some freedom. Camping with your 4x4 is a great way to explore our own backyard,” Jake said. The Shepparton 4x4 and Off-Road Centre specialise in bull bars from Ironman, Rhino, Drivetech, suspension from Dobinsons and Ironman, MSA storage drawers and fridge slides, UHF radios and lighting. Keeping your vehicles in good nick coming up to summer is no problem for the team as they do all vehicle repairs maintenance and logbook servicing, including vehicle air conditioner service and repairs. They also deal in Bridgestone, Mickey Thompson, BF Goodridge and Firestone tyres.

FISHING T
HE CONSISTENCY of the sunny weather in Greater Shepparton is a fisherman's best friend. It’s no wonder so many people relocate to the region to enjoy being outdoors more often. A range of projects, including the restocking of waterways, improving access and building habitats are being realised, as part of a $35M plan hatched by the State Government and funded by fishing licence fees and Go Fishing Victoria, to get more people fishing more often. Over 10,000 ‘ready-to-catch' fish were released in the Goulburn River and in more than 15 lakes around the region. State Member for Northern Victoria, Jaclyn Symes said, “Regional families have a great opportunity to re-explore Victoria’s north, and our ongoing investment into fish restocking provides a fun activity for all keen anglers, no matter their experience.” Track improvements on the Goulburn River between Murchison and Shepparton will permit two-wheel-drive vehicles to access the river, previously only accessible by four-wheel drives. Shepparton Weir and Browns Rd in Murchison have been improved, with works happening next at Andersons Rd, Campbell’s Bend and Hutchinson’s Bend. Meanwhile, the Goulburn Valley Association of Angling Clubs will receive a grant to install a woody habitat at Waranga Basin, creating more homes for the golden perch. Melissa Horne, Minister for Fishing and Boating, said, “Fishers are making a huge investment into their own pastime by purchasing a fishing licence – that’s why we’re proud to be providing additional funding over four years to get more people fishing, more often, and to ensure this experience is Australia's best.” For more information on fishing and to acquire a license, go to www.vfa.vic.gov.au

arly childhood from birth to five years old is becoming more recognised as a key time that children establish healthy behaviours. Without going into everything, let us talk about the importance of exercise. Being active with your kids is an important milestone for their future development. As parents finding the time sometimes can get tricky but knowing how crucial making this time is, might push you a step closer to getting out a bit more. Adult exercise often is heading to the gym or out for a run but for children exercise can simply be learning how to ride a bike, shooting some hoops, playing at the park, or even playing a game of chasey. Physical exercise in children creates healthy bones, muscles and joints so next time you are sitting at home watching a movie while the sun is shining outside, try getting out of the house. Starting small and thinking fun is a great first step and its always important to encourage our kids as we go. We all had to learn how to ride a bike at some stage, that hoop was not always easy to reach and if you’re anything like me you may have been scared to climb to the top of the equipment. Kids need exercise, positive encouragement and parents are the key to

STRESS LESS WHEN CAMPING WITH THE KIDS By Stephanie Holliday AME a question more annoying than “Are we there yet?”, I’ll wait. While camping with kids can be painful with packing everything under the sun, spending the car trip as a human vending machine and hearing that dreadful aforementioned question, the memories you’ll make are well worth it. Here are some basic tips for camping with kids, whether it be on a weekend trip or a three-month adventure:
N
PLAN AHEAD! Learn the area where you’re camping via google so you can work out where to get food if needed, what to pack and what activities/sites there are close by. Check the weather and make a checklist so you don’t forget anything vital. PREPARE MEALS earlier where possible, like spaghetti bolognese or a curry, meals that are easy to heat up when you arrive. Also think about meals that are easy to cook once at the campsite.
We do live in Victoria, so WEATHER isn’t always predictable. Make sure you pack indoor games to keep the kids entertained. Some Lego, colouring-in books, puzzles, reading books and magnetic tiles will all do the trick. KIDS CAN GET SMELLY, RIGHT? Consider how you’ll keep them clean, most likely without running water. Load up on baby wipes and sanitiser as you might be skipping a shower if there aren’t any facilities. Alternatively, look into a handy, lightweight camp shower. They’re
easy to use and everyone will go to bed nice and clean. Children have a knack for needing the TOILET at super convenient times, like at 3am. If you’re camping in the bush or at the beach with no toileting facilities, a kid’s portaloo is an essential item to bring. Remember to TAKE DEEP BREATHS, take in the serenity and make wonderful memories with your family, even if you’re tired from being woken up at 3am for a bush wee.

IVING in regional Australia means it’s no surprise when a rogue kangaroo decides to make a mad dash in front of our cars. As sad as it is, it’s always a good idea to have the added protection of a bull bar in place to protect your vehicle. Bull bars not only protect your vehicle from mishaps and during off-road adventures, but they also allow you to mount winches and attach accessories such as driving lights, aerials and sand flags if you partake in a little dune driving on a beach adventure. Trek Hardware 4x4 Superstore Shepparton are proud stockists of Jungle 4x4 bull bars, which are designed and developed by Trek. All Jungle bull bars are airbag compatible and ADR approved, having been tested in Australia. They fit bull bars and accessories onsite in their workshop, rendering them a one-stop-shop from point of purchase to installation.
Caravan and camping accessories are also stocked in store, with everything from drink bottles and camp stoves to roof racks and myCOOLMAN fridges and freezers. Powerful, robust and ready for any adventure, myCOOLMAN fridges and freezers bring freshness to the Australian bush. CARAVANNING THE
‘DONWAY’ P ETER Don is a name synonymous with local business here in Shepparton. And after finding a manufacturer willing to build his vision of an upmarket caravan that he branded the ‘Donway’, Peter branched out into selling high quality, locally-designed caravans. The idea for caravans came as an extension of his 4x4 canopy business, PJ's 4x4, which has seen year-on-year growth since starting seven years ago. “So many people would come in and chat to us about their new canopy or ute lid, telling us how they’re setting up their car and
getting a caravan to go touring,” said Peter. “We started thinking, what if we have some caravans too and help our customers fulfil their entire travel plans. So, we set out to design our own.” Peter spent almost two years researching who could build his own brand of caravans, eventually settling on Sydney-based manufacturer, Millard. With 76 years of caravan-building experience, Peter said Millard had a reputation he could rely on, and by retailing Millard’s own MFlow series, it would provide a more affordable counterpoint to the

“We’re passionate about what we sell because we’ve designed it ourselves, and I think that shines through with our team and the people who have been a part of this journey,” Peter said.
WORRY-FREE
TRAVEL O NE thing many of us have on our mind when we leave our homes for a trip is the hope that our homes and vehicles will remain safe and secure. Crime is increasingly on the rise, particularly during the summer holiday period, so getting security solutions sorted early is wise. As we look towards more freedoms around travelling, ensuring you have a reliable security system in place to deter thieves is one way to maintain peace of mind and enjoy your break. There are a number of security measures that come into play and all should be encouraged, however one of the most successful has been shown to be installing video surveillance that sends an alert directly to your mobile phone.

LOCAL KIDS EMBARKING ON A WELL-DESERVED
ADVENTURE By Stephanie Holliday OMBINING 4x4 camping adventures with mental health care prevention, local charity, Giz A Break, is providing young people in our region a well-deserved break. The brainchild of dietitian Daniel Thompson, Fairley Leadership Program participant Soenke Tremper and social worker, Kirsten Green, Giz A Break allows young people in the Goulburn Valley and surrounding regions to embark on camping trips where they engage in health-centric activities incorporated into an off-road adventure. Last November, year 9 students from Greater Shepparton Secondary College’s Mooroopna campus embarked on an adventure in The Victorian High Country. The students who attend these experiences enjoy days of bush-bashing, great conversation and the development of self-sufficiency skills learnt through adventure. Two more trips are coming up shortly,
and these adventures mean the world to the students who attend them. Giz A Break work collaboratively with GSSC and Shepparton Lighthouse Project to make these trips possible. “Greater Shepparton Secondary College is very It sounds cliche, but grateful to the Shepparton Lighthouse Project and this opportunity is lifeGiz A Break for providing changing- in all the BUILDING RESILIENCE AND STRENGTH...Year 9 students from GSSC Mooroopna Campus with opportunities for learning Giz A Break's Nathan Terlich, Soenke Tremper and Dallas Piggott. oarding the Kingfisher Cruise boat at Barmah, an enthusiastic Benita Cox greets passengers; a woman quick with a pun. Benita owns Kingfisher Cruises, her family-run business. Graduating in 2000 with two Bachelor degrees, including a Bachelor of Applied Science Ecotourism, she is one of the most experienced, eco-certified guides in Victoria. In 2020, Kingfisher Cruises was inducted into the Ecotourism Hall of Fame, being the only ecotourism business in the area. They go where steam and paddle boats can’t, through the magical Murray River ‘Narrows’. Twenty-two years at the wheel, Benita can identify over 235 bird species by sound and is quick to spot other species like snakes, slowing for a closer look and for photos. “We focus more on nature, its plants and wildlife, not so much on its history. We
entertain our passengers whilst influencing them to understand the environment.” The next Cox generation is involved, with Benita’s children having been on the boat since six weeks of age. Daughter Laetitia, aged 12, can drive the boat. Son Isaac, aged 10, is proficient with the microphone. “Isaac knows his stuff about birds, plants and just for fun will throw in some dinosaur facts,” Benita claims proudly. “If I happen to miss anything in my commentary, they will correct me. Okay, maybe they’ve spent a little too much time on the boat!” The eco-certification is a distinct advantage for passengers, offering an extraordinary level of knowledge. Benita’s banter, information and hilarious sense of humour flow together seamlessly. 5/5 rating! Kingfisher Cruises is located only 45 minutes drive from Shepparton at Barmah. They can be contacted on 5855 2855.

SHOOTING THE STARS
By Kelly Lucas NE of my favourite things about the great outdoors is camping and being under a sky full of beautiful bright stars. My next favourite thing is photographing them. There is something incredibly fascinating about star photography. The combination of seeing the world at night and capturing the stars at a particular moment in time gives a powerful sense of a meaningful existence within the universe. Night photography can be tricky but if you have a digital camera that allows you to shoot in manual mode, have a tripod, steady hand and some patience the images can turn out incredible and can really leave you wondering about our epic sky. Dark skies are essential for star photography and usually the best shots taken are when the moon isn't so visible as it takes away from the stars light. There are a variety of techniques that can be used to capture the night sky but if you focus on these five things you may just capture an amazing shot. 1. It's manual mode all the way, set your camera to it and stay on it. 2.Set an open aperture between f/2.8
O
-f/4, this will be lens dependant, but you do not want to go larger than f/4 as it will not capture enough light from the scene, also open that lens you can always crop images later. 3. Your ISO needs to be set between 1600-4000. 4. This crucial step is the shutter speed which is the measurement of time that the shutter is open. I find anywhere between 10 and 40 second exposures work best. 5. “You don’t take a photograph, you make it,” said American photographer, Ansel Adams. So, keep enjoying the process of experimenting with your camera and settings but more importantly enjoy the stars!

REGIONAL WINE EXPERT, PAUL PHILLIPS, NAMES HIS CURRENT
TOP FOUR VINOS W
ine expert Paul Phillips, who runs Shepparton’s Phillips Cellars and Regional Wine Centre on Corio Street, has shared his top picks for both red and white wines this summer. According to Paul, it’s easy to celebrate local winemakers throughout the rich, grapegrowing region with some of the suggested drops coming from the Goulburn Valley and surrounding areas. The red wines Paul has named as his top picks all pair well with red meat dishes such as rich casseroles and steaks. When pairing wine with red meat recipes, the wine should stand up to the richness of the food. A good rule of thumb is to pair red meat with red wine. Whit wines are refreshing, especially in summer.
REDS
Don’t Tell Gary 2019 Shiraz Grampians Flaunting a dark garnet colour, this red wine was crafted with minimal intervention. It reveals
blueberry and black cherry aromas along with a touch of mixed spices. These fragrances make way for a medium-bodied palate revealing blackberry fruit flavours that are integrated with pepper and soft oak spices, and silky tannins. Enjoy this red with chargrilled steak, charcuterie and cheese, or meat pie. Buller Wines The Nook Heathcote 2018 Shiraz Midnight black core with a deep dark red, black tinged hue. Lifted aromas of dark plum and liquorice intermix with hints of dark chocolate, vanillin oak and spice. Medium bodied dark plum and dark chocolate flavours are compromised by overt toasty vanillin oak with some earth and spice also present. Soft plush feel with velvety tannins and a lingering toasty vanillin oak aftertaste. Pizzini Nonna Gisella Sangiovese 2019 King Valley
The luxurious nose of this red wine offers delicately spiced plum and cherry characters enhanced by pleasing savoury notes and traces of chocolate. A sip of the wine reveals the medium bodied and flavoursome palate brimming with plum and cherry flavours. Combined with soft tannins, the generous palate culminates in a lengthy finish.
WHITES
Antcliff’s Chase 2021 Riesling Strathbogie Ranges Pretty and perfumed, showing lifted orange/ citrus aromas with delicate power. On the palate there is mouth-watering limey/fresh apple flavours, coupled with taut acidity, and fabulous length.A European-styled Riesling that is produced off-dry that always has great ageing potential. Allira Pinot Grigio 2020 Strathbogie Ranges This single vineyard wine features lifted aromas of pear, white peach, citrus and apple. With a lovely balanced acidity and a wonderful lingering finish, this wine is easy drinking and incredibly versatile. Vegan friendly, family owned, estate grown and made high in the hills of the Strathbogie Ranges, Victoria.
IT'S WINE O'CLOCK...Wine expert Paul Phillips, who owns Shepparton’s Phillips Cellars and Regional Wine Centre on Corio Street, has shared his top picks for both red and white wines this summer. Photo: Stephanie Holliday Longleat Murchison Cuvee Brut Nagambie Lakes This Australian classic style is a blend of three select parcels of Chardonnay wines to provide a balance of delicate fruits and yeasty notes with a firm acid backbone. The fruit flavours reflect white stone fruits and citrus. The Brut style is fresh and crisp with just a hint of sweetness. Enjoy chilled on any occasion.
