Davidson Family
Helping Fellow Associates through the Adopt-a-Family Program For most families, the holiday season is a time for celebration and memories to cherish. But the season can also bring feelings of despair for those struggling to make ends meet and provide for their families. This year, Advocate BroMenn Medical Center, Advocate Eureka Hospital and local Advocate Medical Group associates were offered an Adopt-A-Family style program for Advocate associates living in Central Illinois. Departments volunteered to adopt a family and make the holidays brighter for a fellow associate’s family. Response to the program was overwhelming, with several departments asking to adopt. Two associates have agreed to set aside the confidentiality of the selection process and share their stories so that others in the future feel comfortable reaching out for help. Ashley Davidson, an occupational therapy assistant with Advocate Eureka Hospital, was one associate who benefitted from the program. She, her husband Joey and their children Dean, 6 and Haddie, 2 were living in Washington when the storms hit on Sunday, November 17.
“Our house was leveled by the tornado,” says Ashley. “We had just gotten home from church. Joey suffered a spinal fracture and two broken ribs. Haddie had some gashes and bumps. Dean and I just had a few scratches. But the house was gone.” “The human resources team contacted me to see what help we needed.” The department that adopted the Davidson family provided a new bike and helmet for Dean and a new riding scooter for Haddie. Both children also received clothes, books and games. “They even gave Joey and me gifts,” says Ashley. “We received clothes and a gift card from Meijer.” “I can’t say enough about the Adopt-A-Family program. Everyone at Advocate has been our hero. Without their help, we wouldn’t be where we are now. Thank you isn’t big enough.” continued on page 2

Helping Fellow Associates through the Adopt-a-Family Program (continued from cover) Sarah Perrone, a front office associate with Advocate Medial Group’s Immediate Care office at the Advocate BroMenn Outpatient Center, was also adopted by a department. “I moved back to Bloomington-Normal in March,” says Sarah. “I felt like it was no longer safe to stay in my marriage so I literally left with my daughter Mia, 4, and the clothes we were wearing. We left everything else back in Oklahoma.” Fortunately, Sarah was able to move in to her mom’s house; but space is tight. “I didn’t want others to know how badly I needed help, so it was really hard to ask,” said Sarah. “But I finally contacted human resources and completed an application. No one ever made me feel bad about asking for help.”
Sarah’s adoptive department provided a variety of household items to help get Sarah set up – pots and pans, kitchen towels, etc., as well as purple shirts she could wear to work. Her daughter Mia received clothes, coloring supplies and puzzles. “I was really happy about the clothes,” says Sarah. She didn’t have any warm winter items and now she has a basket full of them.” “The program was so very helpful,” says Sarah. “It was so nice to have one less thing that I had to figure out how to do.”
Advocate Experience Creating the safest and best place for patients to heal, physicians to practice and associates to work.
Committed to Associate Satisfaction
As we continue on our journey to becoming the safest and best place for patients to heal, physicians to practice and associates to work, associate satisfaction continues to be a priority. Based on the feedback you provided in our most recent associate satisfaction survey, we have developed a stop light report that shows the areas where we have seen improvement and those areas where we continue to work. The report will also show what we have done and what we are working towards to help address areas of concern.
This dashboard will be shared via E-mail once each month, and on this page of each new issue of Strategic Directions. A copy of the dashboard will also be distributed to every department each month so it can be posted in associate break rooms for your review.

Strategic Initiative 2 – Regional Destination eICU coming in 2014! An Electronic Intensive Care Unit (eICU) harnesses leading-edge technology for round-the-clock, real-time audio and video monitoring in the intensive care unit. This summer, Advocate BroMenn Medical Center will begin offering eICU monitoring for our most critical patients. Our goal is to enhance the quality of care we provide while also significantly reducing complications, length of a patient’s stay, and overall health care costs. This advanced system supplements regular visits by a patient’s health care team members and is just another example of our commitment to outstanding and safe patient care. The eICU offers patients and families added security and peace-of-mind. This state-of-the-art electronic surveillance system utilizes cameras and monitors to provide 24-hour patient surveillance and instant communication between physician intensivists and onsite caregivers.
Sign up for CPOE training In just a few weeks, computerized physician order entry (CPOE) will go live at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center and Advocate Eureka Hospital, allowing doctors to enter their orders and patient care instructions directly into the computer. The orders will then be sent electronically to the appropriate medical staff member or department responsible for fulfilling the order, such as pharmacy, radiology or laboratory. CPOE offers a number of benefits, including: • Reduced medication errors and adverse drug events • Decreased delays in order completion • Reduced errors related to handwriting or transcriptions • Order entry at either the point-of-care or remotely at an offsite location • Error checking for duplicate or incorrect doses or tests
CPOE has been proven to help reduce medical errors and improve quality and efficiency. Recent research shows that use of CPOE in all urban hospitals in the US could prevent as many as 3 million serious medication errors each year. Studies have also shown that CPOE reduces length of stay; reduces repeat tests; reduces turnaround times for laboratory, pharmacy and radiology requests; and delivers cost savings to the hospital. Visit the Intranet for more information on CPOE training sessions!
