ROAD RULES
It has been awhile since Mrs. Hanson administered my in-car driver’s test, and I remember all too well the various vehicle pirouettes I performed to enjoy all of the benefits associated with having a driver’s license.
What I recall was pretty straightforward stuff. The left lane is for passing. Come to a complete stop at stop signs and stop lights. Yield to pedestrians and cyclists.
And by sticking to the rules, I’ve stayed out of vehicular trouble, for the most part. There was the time I was rear-ended on Central, but that wasn’t my fault. And the time I was T-boned by a semi-truck, but that wasn’t my fault. And that period of three months when I was tapped from behind hard enough at stop lights to warrant thousand-dollar bumper repair bills each time (again, not my fault).
But I’m starting to feel queasy about what the rules are any more, particularly on Dallas streets.
For example, on a two-lane thoroughfare in the city, the rules say slower traffic should remain in the right lane. But the rules don’t account for the tremendously poor condition of many lanes on the right side of Dallas streets; those lanes typically slope a bit to the right to facilitate drainage, and they’ve been so poorly maintained over the years that if you drive the speed limit in the lane, you’re likely to feel like a downhill skier on a mogul course, jumping up and down and right and left.
So here’s my question: If I avoid the horribly pock-marked lane to the right
by driving the speed limit in the left lane, what am I legally required to do when a big vehicle is breathing down my neck wanting to pass? (They don’t want to be in the right lane, either.) Driving the speed limit in the right lane will virtually destroy the bottom of my car, so what am I to do — yield to the jerk behind me or continue obeying the speed limit while protecting my vehicle investment, all the time hoping the guy’s road rage doesn’t include a weapon?
And what about all of those manhole covers that, for some reason, are an inch or so below the pavement right in the path of my tires? Is it legally OK to bob and weave in heavy traffic along the street avoiding these landmines, or do I need to slow to a crawl to protect my car even though I know that will incur the wrath of other drivers who have places to go?
Same with signaling my intent to turn right or left — do I still need to do that, or has being transparent about my intent gone the way of typewriters and disco music?
I know texting and driving is bad (although still not illegal), but what about texting, driving and putting on makeup? Is that something I can call 911 about?
And if I see a lapdog with its paws on the steering wheel, is that something I should be concerned about, or should I just assume the dog is acting as an extra set of eyes for potholes, manhole covers and uneven pavement?
You see what I mean? Driving in Dallas is a lot more complicated these days, and I’m just not sure whether I should spend as much time yielding to others as I used to, or whether I should be using Grand Theft Auto video game strategy to send a message to fellow drivers that I’m no patsy on the street?
I don’t think Mrs. Hanson would know the answers, either.

You preach at Prestonwood every Sunday, but you’re also a motivational speaker.
I bet I’ve spoken in every high school in the Metroplex, to a football team or at a sports banquet. That kind of started 40 years ago when I was still at Baylor. I got started doing pre-game pep talks. I’m doing one just about every Friday night in the fall to inspire kids to play well, to make the game count. It just kind of evolved. Some dads or coaches heard me speak at a high school and said, ‘I got a business over here, and we’ve got salesmen. Why don’t you come fire them up a little bit like you did those athletes.’ I’ve done stuff all over America now. A big part of my story is my stuttering, which was a huge lid in my life that I thought was going to keep me down. Of course, everybody has a lid. Everyone has something. The question is, how are you going to respond to that? That’s kind of the message.
What was it like growing up with a stutter?
For most of my life I was ashamed. I tried to hide the fact that I stuttered. The only way to hide that is to never talk. So, I was pretty much in the background. In school, just saying ‘here’ [during roll call] was a struggle. Even to this day, though I preach, and our messages are on CD, it’s still hard for me to hear myself talk.
Q&A: Neal Jeffrey
The first thing audiences learn about Baptist preacher Neal Jeffrey is that he stutters. Not because it’s incredibly obvious — decades of practice have yielded only the occasional stumble. His face crinkles, and his eyes blink as his words get caught somewhere within the brain’s complicated speech process. It’s evident because he quips straightaway: “I’m a stutterer. All that means is that I stutter.” Jeffrey is the lead pastor of our neighborhood’s Prestonwood Baptist Church and a sought-after motivational speaker. He talks about how he achieved his dream to play pro football after leading Baylor University to a historic championship in 1975. Then he made a career out of the thing that has terrified him all his life.
Any formative experiences that stand out in your mind?
Well, speech class. The first time I had to stand up and make a speech was in seventh grade. That was very traumatic and just a disaster in my mind. As a freshman in high school I had Spanish class, and we had to stand up in front of the class and do dialogue. Now, I like to joke and say if you think I can stutter in English, you should hear me stutter in Spanish. Pretty impressive. I was scared of girls. It’s hard to stutter and be cool at the same time. You can’t do that. So, I wasn’t

real social. Although, I was always a nice guy, and everybody liked me, but I just didn’t hang out or party or date because you had to stand around and talk.
What did you do instead?
I was very involved in my church. I was a homebody and enjoyed my family. I played sports. I played everything. If I wasn’t playing something at school, I was playing something at home.
You made history as a quarterback at Baylor University. Can you tell me about that?
I was raised loving Baylor, and I like to say I’ve been a Baylor fan all my life, which means I’ve suffered all my life. Baylor had never really won much from 1957 to 1973, my whole life. My dream was to beat Texas and win a championship, which we hadn’t won since 1924. The game is still called the ‘Miracle on the Brazos.’ We were behind 24-7 at halftime. We just had this unusual sense in the locker room. Usually if you’re down 24-7, you’re a little bit upset, the coaches are mad, and everyone is kind of frustrated. But we had this real calm. We just turned the momentum around and came back and won the game 34-24. Then we won the first championship in 50 years at Baylor and played in the Cotton Bowl in January 1975. It was just one of the greatest experiences of my life. Every Baylor fan remembers where they were. It’s still an iconic game in Baylor history.
Then you went pro with the San Diego Chargers. What prompted you to leave for the ministry?
I always dreamed of playing in the NFL. I was drafted in the last round. Today they have 12 rounds; back then they had 17 rounds. So, I didn’t play a whole lot, but it was a wonderful experience for me.
I had felt as a senior in high school that the Lord was calling me to preach. But I stuttered so well at that time that I thought it couldn’t happen anyway. I didn’t tell
anybody because I was almost ashamed of it. My second year in San Diego, I just felt that this is not what I was made to do. I was 26 at the time. I could hang around in the NFL for another five or six years and make a little money. Then I’m 31 or 32, starting a career. I decided I needed to get started now.
When did your stuttering begin to get better?
It changed a little bit at Baylor when I was a quarterback — a Christian quarterback. All these churches in Central Texas wanted the quarterback to come give his testimony. Obviously, I didn’t want to go. I was fearful and afraid, so I said no. I was still hiding the fact that I stuttered. If you’re a stutterer and you speak before a group and you try to hide it, it’s a disaster. It’s embarrassing for you, and it’s embarrassing for the audience. So, my wife decided — I was just dating her then — just tell them up front that I’m a stutterer and tell them some funny stories about football. So, I started doing that. I’d stand up and say, ‘I don’t want to brag or anything, but I’m a pretty good stutterer.’ Everyone is kind of laughing, so it’s out there. I kind of got over the fear of having someone see me stutter. I’ve matured in that. Of course, I speak all the time now. For the last 30 years, that’s all I’ve done.
So, you don’t get nervous before you speak?
I get nervous every time I speak. I get almost sick. It can be a little high school pregame speech. It could be at Prestonwood with 7,000 seats. I’m going to be nervous. It’s just part of the deal.
Why do you keep doing it?
Because I’ve learned what’s on the other side of it: being used by God to encourage other people. I’ve seen it all these years. People are encouraged, challenged and uplifted. I love what the result is of speaking. —Emily Toman

THE LITTLE THINGS
Blurred lines of the art world
When Renee Rhyner began representing commercial artists 25 years ago, she discovered that their work could resonate beyond the product it was selling.
“There’s a level of fine art to it,” she says. “You don’t have to be one or the other. I’m drawn to artists who are both.”
She operates Renee Rhyner & Co. out of her Preston Hollow home. The business is an online gallery, and the artwork is exhibited and sold exclusively in her shop. It comprises mostly photography and graphic design from artists who aren’t household names, but whose works have been seen around the world.
Rhyner’s first client was Fredrik Broden, a photographer from Stockholm. He created the striking image of a candy-covered hand against a sky-blue background that became the book cover for the bestseller “A Million Little Pieces,” published in 2003. From there, her client base grew organically. In a way, so did the business itself.
Before launching her company, Rhyner represented models for a local agency. Naturally, she worked alongside commercial photographers.
“I thought, ‘They need representation, too,’ ” she says, “and I wanted to make my own schedule.”
Her client list now includes artists like Ann Cutting, known for her surreal, science-inspired photography used by companies such as Time magazine and Nike; Tom Brown, whose award-winning
graphic designs appear in magazine spreads and on book covers; and photographer/filmmaker Dave Anderson, the former television production director for the Clinton administration.
This year, Rhyner landed a partnership with The Nasher Store at NorthPark Center to sell the work of her standout client, Brian Cronin, an illustrator from Dublin who worked under famed graphic designer Milton Glaser.
Rhyner finds herself wearing two hats: promoting her artists to big commercial companies and to fine art galleries, or both. It’s a relatively new idea — an artist who can straddle both disciplines.
“There is not a long history of commercial art being shown in galleries,” Rhyner says.
Commercial artists have an advantage: Producing good work is their job. They can’t wait for inspiration to strike.
“They never stop creating,” she says. Rhyner spends a significant amount of time in Los Angeles and New York City, where she discovers many of her artists. But in recent years, Dallas has carved out its space in the art world.
“I’m spending a lot more time in Dallas,” she says. “There’s work in my own backyard.” —Emily

Cox opened Oso Food and Wine a few months ago, billed as a Mediterranean restaurant, but its influences draw upon much more.
“So many countries border the Mediterranean, like Italy, Spain and Libya,” Cox says. “I want to expose people to new flavors by drawing on these cultures without going too far out of the comfort zone.”
The mezze platter’s smooth garlic hummus and fresh lima bean baba ganoush is classic Lebanese fare, while the warm frisee salad, with Korean pear, roasted daikon and burnt honeymiso dressing, showcases an Asian influence. A whole fish on the original menu proved a bit too daring for some diners. Executive chef Kelly Hightower — whose résumé includes stints at Hattie’s, Tei Tei Robata, and Ziziki’s swapped it out for a buttery portion of pan-roasted halibut, keeping the well-balanced sweet and savory accompaniments: roasted fingerling potatoes, shaved fennel, olives and an Italian vinaigrette. With 30 years in the restaurant business, Cox says he has opened plenty of eateries — but never one in which he has been so personally involved, even down to the name. “In Spanish, oso translates as ‘bear,’ which is a nickname that my kids call me,” Cox says. “In Italian, it means ‘to risk.’ ” —Whitney Thompson

It’s easy to lose track of time when you step inside Sample House & Candle Shop in Preston Oaks shopping center (10720 Preston at Royal). Aromatic candles and intoxicating soaps waft in the air, luring you farther into the store like a cartoon character. But this Preston Hollow shop boasts more than holiday decor, children’s gifts and sassy stationary neatly arranged on vintage tables. Manager Bridget Allen says that it’s the warm and friendly customers that make her job worthwhile. “We end up becoming friends,” she says. Allen has worked for Sample House for 26 years, long before her Preston Oaks shop — one of seven outposts for the longstanding Texasbased chain — opened in 2006. She often runs into regulars. “I have second- and third-generation customers that come back again and again,” she says. Allen says the store is popular because it offers new, seasonal goodies, so there is something fun and different to see every time you go.
EAT CLEAN IN 2015
As we ring in the New Year, many of us look for a new start, whether it’s de-cluttering the house or adopting a healthier lifestyle. You can achieve both by cleaning out your pantry and swapping processed junk for whole foods. Here are six ingredients to kickstart a year of clean eating.
1. ALMOND FLOUR

If you are taking a break from grains or just want a replacement every now and then, almond flour is the perfect substitute for traditional flour. It adds good nutrients and a mild nut flavor to your recipe.
2. WHOLE ALMONDS
If almond flour is good for you, so is its source. Keep the pantry stocked with whole, unsalted almonds for a variety of protein-packed recipes.
3. COCONUT OIL
Coconut oil replaces any high-heat cooking oil and has many health benefits. This oil is one of the most versatile and can be used in baking as a dairy-free butter replacement.
FIND THE FULL RECIPES at inkfoods.com or advocatemag.com.
4. COCONUT FLOUR
Used in small amounts but full of fiber, protein and healthy fat, coconut flour is a perfect substitute for wheat flours.
5. COCONUT MILK
Creamy and full of flavor, coconut milk can be added to smoothies, soups and sauces. It also can replace milk or cream in baking. This ingredient is one of the best to have in your pantry.
6. COCONUT SUGAR
A simple and easy baking substitute, coconut sugar looks more like brown sugar but can replace all sugar for baking. It adds an earthy flavor boost to any dessert that you want to lighten up.

STEPHEN KING once advised aspiring writers, “Kill your darlings, kill your darlings even when it breaks your egocentric little scribbler’s heart — kill your darlings.” What did popular culture’s most prolific horror writer mean by that? That good storytelling often requires nixing superfluous parts, no matter how much the author loves them. Each month when we publish the Advocate magazine, photos and anecdotes we adore are often left scattered about the figurative cuttingroom floor. Please allow us to indulge our egocentric little hearts as we share the more fascinating photos and tidbits from 2014 that almost lost their lives in the interest of brevity and limited page space.

DANCING QUEEN FEBRUARY
Known as the “queen of quarters and shot glasses,” Neenah Crocker is the resident belly dancer for the Bachman Lakearea restaurant Stratos Greek Taverna, featured on our list of offbeat date-night ideas for Valentine’s Day. She’s also a government CPA and holds two master’s degrees. “For me, dancing is the best outlet for stress relief,” she says. “I sit at a desk for 10 hours a day.” Her elaborate performances often involve veils, swords and fire. Belly dancing is more than just
a hobby for Crocker. The mother of three has been at it for 34 years in Dallas and jokingly calls herself “one of the old ladies” at Stratos. She runs a local belly dancing academy and recruits new performers, emphasizing the importance of team building. “You can’t learn this by watching a YouTube video,” she says. Her close bond with the Stratos owners has kept her going. “I love Nick and his family. If it weren’t for them, I’d be retired already.”

COMING HOME OCTOBER
Days before making an incredible catch that led to a victory against the Seattle Seahawks last October, Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Terrance Williams stopped by his alma mater, W.T. White High School. Students asked him via Twitter to visit the campus and, just like that, he did. He even had dinner with the kids before the Longhorns’ Friday-night football game. Williams graduated from W.T. White in 2008. After an impressive run with the Baylor Bears, he was drafted to the Cowboys in spring 2013. Sports writers and analysts have been buzzing about the athlete ever since, but he hasn’t forgotten his roots in our neighborhood. This photo originally ran online and became the Advocate’s most-read post of the month. PHOTO BY LARRY YOUNG

UNITED METHODISTS MARCH
After 53 years of courtship, two men were married in our neighborhood, if only symbolically. Jack Evans and George Harris, longtime members of Northaven United Methodist Church, exchanged vows at the nearby Midway Hills Christian Church because such ceremonies are prohibited from occurring inside Methodist walls. The Rev. Bill McElvaney, a retired Northaven UMC pastor, officiated the service while seated, as he was in poor health, and risked losing his credentials. McElvaney, 86, died of liver cancer several months later. Just before television news crews swarmed the wedding reception at Northaven UMC for comments from the couple, Evans and Harris (pictured in the embrace near the center) shared some tender and less chaotic moments with loved ones.

ALL THE PRETTY HATS MARCH
Linda Humphries, pictured at center in the gray suit, sashays to the old jazz tune “A Pretty Girl Is Like a Melody” during the Easter parade portion of the Mad Hatter’s Tea at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church. “We were all parading and prancing around,” Humphries says. “Most everyone wore hats. This year, I happened to have an old fedora. I took a man’s hat and bestowed it with flowers and ribbons.” The annual event features handmade hat contests and a silent auction to raise money for missions. More than 230 women turned out for the occasion — the highest attendance yet. The cause is one near to Humphries’ heart: the Vickery Meadow Learning Center. Decades ago she chaired the committee that decided VMLC would become the church’s flagship mission.

BREAKING A SWEAT FEBRUARY
Nothing keeps these athletes from their sport, not even Mother Earth. Each winter, Jesuit College Preparatory School brings rowing indoors for the Southwest Ergometer Amateur Tournament (SWEAT). The event attracted more than 500 high school, college, master and adaptive rowers from across the region. Although the competition lacked the outdoor elements of a traditional race, it was no less intense. Exhausted Jesuit rower Eddy Calderon, who has since graduated, is at the center of the photo. The man shouting commands over Calderon’s shoulder isn’t the coach. It’s his fellow crew member, Conar Ehring, who is now a Jesuit Crew captain. Athletes chose a peer coach to motivate them through the competition.

BABY BLUE JULY
I thought I’d just be photographing a baby floating in a pool, as if in wait of rescue. Then Preston Hollow resident Linda DeSanders, Dolfin Swim School owner and director of the Texas Drowning Prevention Alliance, said, “Should we push her under?” My first thought was, That’s not a very nice thing to do, but then I heard myself say, “Sure!” Watching this adorable infant frog-kicking underwater was a sight to behold. But shooting underwater isn’t easy. Simply finding the camera’s viewfinder is a challenge; fumbling with controls, even more so. This is to say nothing of the anxiety of submerging a $6,000 camera in little more than a glorified Ziploc bag. In the end, there were few tears — from either our semi-aquatic talent or the photographer watching her — and we came away with more unique photos than we could run, including this one. WORDS AND

LISTEN TO YOUR HEARTBREAK
And discover your true passion for the new year
As we start a new year, people everywhere will be making new resolutions. There’s something about the start of a new year that pushes us to new goals and dreams.
Many of us believe that to set the best course for our lives we should follow our “passion” or follow our “heart.” The trouble is, more often than not, that we have difficulty determining what our true passions really are.
Just over a year ago, members of our church pointed me toward a powerful new way to set goals, dreams and visions. It was based on the writings of a man named Umair Haque in Harvard Business Review.
Put simply, Haque says don’t follow your passion, and don’t follow you heart. Follow your heartbreak.
In a blog titled, “How To Have A Year That Matters,” Haque suggests that listening and responding to the things that break our heart about the world can actually lead us to great clarity about our life’s purpose.
He says it this way: “If you want to find your passion, surrender to your heartbreak. Your heartbreak points towards a truer north and it’s the difficult journey towards it that is, in the truest sense, no mere passing idyllic infatuation, but enduring, tempestuous passion.”
The moment I first heard of this suggestion, I knew it revealed great spiritual truth.
I’ve seen it time after time. Ask a person “What are you passionate about?” and you’re likely to meet blank stares and silence.
But ask a person, “What breaks your heart about the world?” and almost everyone launches into an answer filled with passion, longing and clarity.
The answers are limitless: poverty, racism, child abuse, hunger and hundreds more. The things that break our heart are often based on painful things that have happened to us, or someone we know.
Then, after a person answers this first question, another one soon follows: “So, what are you going to do about it?”
What actions do you feel called to take to change the things that break your heart? The moment you can answer this second question, you have found a new way to express your true passion and life’s calling.
Asking the question “What breaks my heart about the world?” can reveal the deep, long-term calling we most need in life, with
I’ve seen it time after time. Ask a person “What are you passionate about?” and you’re likely to meet blank stares and silence. But ask a person, “What breaks your heart about the world?” and almost everyone launches into an answer filled with passion, longing and clarity.
even more clarity than simply asking “What do I resolve this year?”
Because the things that tend to break our hearts — in our lives, society and the world often reveal those passions. They point to the sufferings we are called to redeem, the pains we are called to assuage, the situations that perhaps we have been uniquely created, placed and gifted to impact.
Spiritually, we know that God can use heartbreak for great things. So many great social service agencies and movements are born out of the heartbreak of a few passionate people.
So, don’t listen to your heart. Listen to your heartbreak. Follow where it leads you, and you just might discover your true passion for this coming year.

Changes coming to Forest and Inwood — eventually
While developers propose razing the Forestwood Townhouse Community for up to 350 apartments and townhomes, and 85,000 square feet of retail at the northwest corner, plans for the aged shopping center across the street remain unclear. However, the owners recently released a statement outlining their intentions. The west side of the property is occupied by Liberty Burger and other small tenants who “operate successful, vibrant businesses, which contribute to our community” and have up to 10-year leases. Those on the east side Forestwood Antique Mall and Forest Car Wash and Detail, around for 20-plus years — received only short-term lease renewals and could be on their way out. According to the statement, “The most recent proposals were presented this summer, but we have made no firm plans or commitments to move forward with any specific development, and we continue to evaluate alternatives.” As for the northwest corner, a zoning application to replace the existing townhomes with a mixed-use development has not yet been submitted at City Hall. The owners of both corners of Forest and Inwood come loosely from the same Daniel family but operate as different entities.
First round of Preston Hollow Village tenants opening soon
Several new restaurants and shops will arrive in Preston Hollow Village over the next couple of months as the mixed-use development enters its second phase. The European street-food concept VertsKebap was slated to open by the end of December. The Colorado-based healthy fast-food eatery Modmarket is expected by the end of January. Other soon-to-open businesses include Blue Sushi Sake Grill, Pakpao Thai, Orangetheory Fitness, Eighteen Eight Fine Men’s Salon and Aveda’s Tangerine Salon
The next phase for the 42-acre project will yield a seven-story luxury apartment building with 512 units.

Despite the other two closures, our neighborhood’s location is here to stay, according to owners.

Education
As part of the school’s “social-entrepreneurial” program, Lamplighter pre-K students operated a farmers market on campus and sold vegetables that they planted and harvested, supplemented by store-bought produce. The program taught lessons in philanthropy, as the profits go to a charity of their choice.
The Friends of the Preston Royal Library announced the winners of this year’s art competition for elementary school students in first through eighth grade. The work is displayed at the library. It also makes up the 2015 Preston Royal Library calendar. You can buy one in person for $5, and the sales benefit library projects such as updates to the old auditorium. Winners include Jack Levy , Gabriela Benavides and Desteny Briones ( George Bannerman Dealey International Academy ); Peyton Militello , Amanda Flores , Valeria Garcia and Paige Traver ( Arthur Kramer Elementary School ); Brenda Gutierrez , Gabriela Lima and Isaac Molina ( John J. ‘Spreading Good Cheer’
St. Monica Catholic School collected more than 4,200 jars of peanut butter for Catholic Charities of Dallas as part of its annual “Spreading Good Cheer” event. Each year, hundreds of cheerleaders from local Catholic schools come together to kick off the Catholic Bowl games, raise awareness and gather pantry donations for Catholic Charities. St. Monica’s cheerleaders took home the large school trophy, having donated enough jars of peanut butter for more than 100,000 sandwiches for families served by Catholic Charities.

GUT INSTINCT
A vigilant neighbor’s impulse to report suspicious activity paid off.
In mid-November, a man rang the doorbell of a Windsor Park home. Rather than opening the door, the homeowner spoke to the unknown visitor — a black man appearing to be in his early 20s — through her window. He announced that he was looking for “Kim.”
Keeping her door closed, the neighbor responded that nobody by that name lived in her home. That’s when the man retreated to his white four-door sedan and drove away.
But not before the homeowner wrote down the license plate of the suspicious vehicle and called police.
“The whole thing just felt odd to me, so I called 911,” the neighbor wrote in an email shared by the Windsor Park Neighborhood Association.
Ten minutes after calling 911, she writes, a detective called asking for more information. Based on the details she shared about what the man was wearing and the license plate number, police were able to pull over the car and take a look.
Turns out that the man who rang the doorbell that morning had stolen property in his car from a previous burglary that day. Police say the driver and his two accomplices had been hitting the area between Forest and Walnut Hill.
