OBSCENE ONSCREEN
Movie-going is becoming increasingly awkward
I enjoy going to the movie theater. Watching shows at home is OK, too, but there’s something about a movie on the big screen that makes even a bad story seem better.
I’ll watch just about any genre, although foreign flicks with subtitles and horror movies are at the bottom of the list.
Maybe my love for movies says something about my psyche; maybe I love to watch stories on film because I’m more interested in the lives of others rather than my day-to-day routine. Or maybe I like watching stories told on a screen because I make a living reading and writing stories myself. Or maybe I’m just too lazy to read books.
Anyway, my usual movie companion is my wife, who has far more limited movie tastes. She absolutely refuses to see a movie if there’s too much drama or blood, although she’s always willing to make what I invariably point out are hypocritical exceptions for movies with Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger or Harrison Ford.
She loves Westerns, which is a pretty limiting characteristic of movies these days. And she refuses to see provocative or sexually suggestive shows, although that prerogative is starting to severely limit what she can watch these days.
So I was surprised when she volunteered to see the latest Chris Rock movie, Top Five. Rock is a funny guy, but he has a sharp edge to his comedy and he’s no stranger to an obscenity-laced monologue. But the previews she saw on David Letterman looked harmless and funny.
So off we went, settling in with two strangers as the only people in the theater. And then it began: Top Five has everything in a movie she hates, except for blood and death. It was
crude, obscene, sexually provocative and downright disgusting. It literally made my wife cringe, and I was right there with her.
It’s the kind of movie that, had any of you or worse, either of our sons — been sitting next to us, I’m not sure there would have been a hole deep enough to crawl into.
I wondered why Rock felt the need to go as far as he did when he could have made his point and told his story just as well in a lessdisgusting way.
In fact, why do so many entertainers feel the need to push boundaries in such a way that a viewer like me is almost embarrassed to be seen in the theater?
This movie featured a tampon soaked in generic hot sauce (I guess Tabasco refused to pay product promo fees) rammed up a naked guy’s kiester; I guess it was meant to show that the guy was being a jerk to his girlfriend.
In addition, one of the coming-attractions previews shown prior to the movie showed a naked guy stretched out face down in front of a naked woman, with her holding his legs in wheelbarrow fashion (this is a Vince Vaughan movie, so it’s probably only going to be rated PG-13).
I hate to sound like a prude or someone who can’t take “edgy.” And from a business standpoint, I understand the need to push the envelope a bit to ensure that an idea doesn’t become lost among the millions of other entertainment ideas out there today.
Of course, I have the option to stay home and not spend money supporting “trash” and “filth,” as some describe movies these days.
Maybe I’m being too sensitive. Maybe I’m asking too much. It’s just becoming harder and harder for me to separate things that “sort of” cross the line from those that obliterate it completely.
I don’t ever want to be someone who thinks that, in the middle of a movie purporting to address serious racial issues, a hot sauce-soaked tampon jammed somewhere it shouldn’t be is laugh-out-loud hilarious.

Neighborhood librarian reimagines popular folk tales for children
Children’s book author Patricia Vermillion spends most mornings on the sun porch of her Preston Center-area high-rise. Her eyes look toward the Downtown skyline, but her mind goes elsewhere.
“Dallas is busy for me,” she says. “I just sit in my writing space and pretend I’m in the country. It’s quiet, and the sun shines in. It’s a good place.”
Other happy places for the Mississippi native include the University Park Library across the street — she has checked out Eudora Welty’s “One Writer’s Beginnings” so many times, she figures she should just buy it — and The Lamplighter School, where she serves as the librarian.
“I enjoy putting the right book in the hands of the right student,” she says. “That’s the most rewarding thing.”
Vermillion published her first children’s book, “Texas Chili? Oh My!” in 2013, retelling “The Three Little Pigs” with a Texas twist. Three armadillos must dig their dens
using native materials — such as pecan tree branches and a prickly pear cactus — while evading the coyote that wants to huff and puff and turn them into Texas chili.
The book recently received an award from the San Antonio Conservation Society, which annually recognizes the best books on Texas history. The back pages include a glossary of terms for children to learn about their home state.
The idea for the book came while her students were learning about Texas history.
“They didn’t know much at all, so I decided to retell the story,” she says.
She was inspired by the late Robert San Souci, an author whose work, including his macabre “Cinderella Skeleton,” is based on popular children’s stories. Her next book, due out this year, is “Hound Dawg,” a Southern version of “The Little Red Hen.”
Vermillion spent 13 years as a first-grade teacher in Mississippi and Louisiana before earning her master’s degree in library
science and moving to Dallas for her husband’s work. Once here, she sought out a writing community but found there was no Dallas critique group for the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, one of the largest such organizations in the country. So, she started her own. A small group meets monthly at her home to share and critique work.
While she has pursued other types of writing — fictional short stories based on people in her life — children’s books seem to resonate well. Almost everyone remembers the books they read as a kid. For Vermillion, it was a lot of Nancy Drew and Madeleine L’Engle, to name a few.
“There is something special about writing for children,” Vermillion says. “I’m a part of their lives right now.” —Emily Toman

Thelunchtime line often reaches out the door of Hopdoddy, the “gourmet” burger bar known for its made-from-scratch buns, houseground, hormone-free meats and organic produce. Flip the menu over, though, and you’ll see that the drink list is no afterthought. The restaurant applies the same philosophy to its cocktails and adult milkshakes. “The whole idea behind it is to source as many local spirits as possible,” says manager Ben del Castillo. Most of the liquor comes from Texas. Lemons and limes are squeezed fresh daily, and all the syrups are made in-house. The menu includes a few different margaritas, including the classic “doble fina” and the “lil’ prick,” a prickly pear martini. For the milkshakes, Hopdoddy churns its own ice cream on site, adding a hint of cinnamon to every batch, including the popular Nutella chocolate pretzel shake. Other varieties rotate on and off the menu with the seasons, or sometimes pairing with the burger special. —Emily

The shop has operated in Midway Village, across from the Episcopal School of Dallas, since 1985, and originally it was owned by Iris Kendall. Clip ’N Dip almost had to close, until Shelton took over after the second owner in February of last year.
“We’re actually bringing it back from the dead,” she says.
Clip ’N Dip offers grooming, daycare and boarding. They use biodegradable products, mostly made in Texas. The staff’s philosophy is centered on “humanity over vanity,” and they treat every dog or cat like they would their own.
Because the groomers take time to get to know every animal, they often know when something’s wrong. They felt a lump on the throat of one client’s dog, and it turned out to be cancer. The early detection may have saved the dog’s life.
The shop regularly supports local rescue groups. It recently collected donations for Santa Paws and A Different Breed. This month, the $15 cost of teeth brushing will go toward providing the same service for pets in need.

GOOD FOOD
OUR NEIGHBORHOOD IS HOME TO MORE HEALTHY DINING OPTIONS
THAN EVER BEFORE
STORY
BY EMILY TOMAN | PHOTOS BY RASY RAN
WHEN REAL ESTATE EXPERTS BEGAN TO EXPAND THE CONCEPT OF HEALTHY FAST FOOD that had been so successful in the western United States, they looked for areas with a strong and active foodie population. “Dallas just jumped off the map,” says Mike Donahue, co-founder of LYFE Kitchen.
Preston Hollow, to be exact.
Over the past year, LYFE and other new dining establishments have flocked to our neighborhood, touting farm-fresh produce, sustainably raised meats and clean, whole foods — all in a modernized fast-food setting. The menus feature trendy health foods such as kale and quinoa but also traditionally indulgent yet unprocessed burgers, tacos and pizza, and calorie counts to go with them.
None of this is particularly groundbreaking in a sophisticated, epicurean town like ours. We have no shortage of quality, health-conscious restaurants. But the more we have, the better they become, and novel ideas begin to surface
$2 Texas wine from a tap, for example.
Here, we take a closer look at these healthy fast-casual restaurants that are making their mark on the Preston Hollow dining scene.

Modmarket
PEOPLE HAVE TO EAT OUT ALL THE TIME.
At least, that’s what Modmarket’s co-owner Anthony Pigliacampo has concluded. Most households have two working parents now; life is busy.
“If you look at the history of the restaurant industry, it started out as something that was indulgent,” he says.
“The menus of the those restaurants were not designed with food you could eat every day.”
Healthy food is “becoming more necessary,” which is why he and business partner Rob McColgan came up with the concept for Modmarket.
The Colorado-based restaurant opens
Feb. 4 in the new Preston Hollow Village development at the northwest corner of Walnut Hill and Central, and promises meals under $10 served in under 10 minutes.
Modmarket carefully walks the spectrum, catering to hardcore health nuts and your average steak-and-potatoes customer. The restaurant’s two most popular menu items are the superfood salad with a spinach-and-kale blend, quinoa pilaf, feta, carrots, almonds, red grapes and champagne vinaigrette; and the steak sandwich on ciabatta bread with chipotle aioli, Muenster cheese, mixed greens and tomato. The calorie counts come to 606 and 660, respectively.
It shows that the common definition of “healthy” is changing.
“It doesn’t have to be so reductive,” Pigliacampo says. The 40 grams of fat in a salad dish comes from nuts and cheese and olive oil, rather than globs of ranch dressing.
The 12-inch brick-oven pizzas are made inhouse daily with whole-wheat dough, and you can opt for gluten-free. The selections range from crimini kale (487 calories) to barbecue (840 calories).
The company sources locally, sometimes. Right now, you’ll find winter citrus from Texas incorporated into certain dishes. The restaurant is more focused on seasonal produce, changing parts of the menu several times a year.
Pigliacampo also recognized that beer and wine are an important part of dining out, even if it is “fast food.” In addition to local craft beers, Modmarket has Tiamo organic wine on tap, starting at $2 a glass. The tap reduces bottle waste and lowers the cost — because who wants an $8 glass of wine to go with their $7 salad?
Modmarket originated in Boulder in 2009 and expanded through Colorado. The next stop was Texas. In addition to Preston Hollow, locations recently opened in Plano and Flower Mound, with more coming to Southlake and Richardson.
Pigliacampo says Dallas aligns with Denver — young, well-educated families who are active and outdoorsy and care about what they eat.
“Preston Hollow is a great illustration of that,” he says.

WHERE TO GRAB GOOD-FOR-YOU GRUB
Whether fast and casual, or slow and upscale, our neighborhood has long been a hub for fresh, whole foods. These are just a few other restaurants that cater to the healthconscious diner.
Green House Market
The popular food truck opened a brick-and-mortar restaurant inside NorthPark Center in December 2013, featuring locally sourced meats and produce. And, it gives the word “salad” a whole new meaning. Its veggie list includes a quinoa pilaf with mushrooms, leeks and bell peppers; forbidden rice with pomegranate seeds and butternut squash; and roasted beets with walnuts and feta. Order two with a choice of meat or fill up your plate with three heaping portions of different salads.
Cedars Woodfire Grill
Although it recently shuttered its Frisco and Plano restaurants, the location on the Cooper Aerobics campus remains open (to the public, by the way, not just Cooper members), serving unprocessed meals made without the use of freezers, fryers or microwaves. The menu features grilled everything — in bowls, salads, sandwiches or wraps. To indulge, try the adult grilled cheese with applewood smoked bacon. On Saturdays, kids eat free if they come wearing a sports jersey.
Zoes Kitchen
This fast-casual Mediterranean spot continues to expand in our neighborhood. It has already established popular locations at Preston and Royal as well as Inwood Village, with a new one coming to the Shops at Park Lane. The menu pleases both meat-eaters and vegetarians with grilled kebabs and salads. Plus, you can find all the calorie counts online.
Snappy Salads
With an emphasis on creative salad concoctions, the Preston-Forest restaurant can convert almost any meat-and-potatoes lover. Curious how much fat that dressing is adding to your veggies? Snappy Salads breaks down the nutritional info for each one on its website.
True Food Kitchen
The Plaza at Preston Center was abuzz in November 2013 during the opening of the first True Food Kitchen in Texas. The concept is based on the holistic cooking philosophy of Dr. Andrew Weil, known for his anti-inflammatory diet. The sit-down restaurant has an open kitchen swarming with staff. The menu features some standout dishes you don’t see every day, such as the edamame dumplings appetizer with daikon radish and white truffle oil, and the turkey lasagna with spinach and ricotta.
Seasons 52
For an upscale (yet reasonably priced) experience centered on only seasonal ingredients at their peak flavors, this NorthPark Center restaurant is great for a less-indulgent celebratory dinner. Every dish is less than 475 calories.

Snap Kitchen
WITH ITS LIME GREEN AND ORANGE
décor and shelves stocked with color-coded plastic containers, Snap Kitchen at Preston Royal Village has a regimented feel.
It’s the latest of several shops in our neighborhood, along with My Fit Foods and Simply Fit Meals, offering healthy, take-home meals. Nearly every food lifestyle is represented — paleo, vegan, gluten-free, you name it. But it all falls under the umbrella of whole foods.
“We don’t like to be established as one or the other,” says Daniel Magoon, nutritionist for Snap Kitchen.
The Austin-based company recently began expanding to Dallas, opening in Preston Hollow this past fall. Popping a meal into the microwave for 30 seconds has its appeal; it’s a kind of modernized TV dinner, dreamed up by chef Matthew Reinhart.
The most popular item is a rendition of a conventionally heavy, high-fat dish: chicken and green chili enchiladas, which aren’t enchiladas at all. They’re savory, chickenfilled crepes topped with a creamy poblano sauce and pickled red onions. The deviled eggs (categorized in the snack section of the store) come filled with jalapeño hummus. The grass-fed bison quinoa is a hearty lunch dish with smashed kidney beans and cheddar cheese. The cold-pressed juices replace meals entirely with all four or five ingredients listed on the bottle.
Much of the mantra of Snap Kitchen involves losing weight, aside from just making healthier choices. People have dropped 10-12 pounds on its 21-day meal plan. Chances are you may walk into the store and have no clue which containers to choose.
“The idea is to have higher carbs during the day and higher protein at dinner,” Magoon says. And eat five times a day, because “when you aren’t starving, you’re more mindful of what you should eat.”
The Snap Kitchen menu changes with the seasons, and the shop sources locally as much as possible. For instance, it stopped carrying pork altogether because it couldn’t find a local producer it liked.

GOOD FOOD LYFE
Kitchen
LYFE KITCHEN CO-FOUNDER MIKE Donahue hates being asked about his former gig as McDonald’s chief communications officer — as if his current work is some form of atonement.
Vilifying those kinds of fast-food joints isn’t very productive, he says, because it’s the consumer who ultimately drives the market. That’s what created LYFE Kitchen.
Unlike other industries such as technology — Apple engineered devices we never knew we needed — restaurants take cues from the public.
“In the restaurant industry, I find that the consumer is far ahead of the industry,” Donahue says.
The health-conscious attitude is nothing new. Donahue commends the efforts of Dr. Kenneth Cooper to educate people about the dangers of being sedentary. The influx of healthy fast-food restaurants (such

as the Cedars Woodfire Grill that opened on the Cooper Aerobics campus) indicates that “the issues have become so much bigger,” Donahue says.
Donahue saw a niche — and a challenge, to make sure the food actually tastes good. He enlisted executive chef Art Smith, a wellknown health-food guru who served as Oprah Winfrey’s personal chef for 10 years, along with executive chef Jeremy Bringardner, who came out of the same Johnson & Wales University culinary training program as Emeril Lagasse and Tyler Florence.
They spent the better part of a year creating and taste-testing dishes for the menu, which includes items such as quinoa bowls, kale salad and roasted Brussels sprouts. Then there are healthy versions of buffalo chicken strips, the grass-fed burger, and steak and potatoes. Everything includes nutritional info, and the
menu denotes gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian items. The corn chowder — an underrated dish that most people don’t know to order — is actually vegan, made with cashew cream.
Like Modmarket, LYFE Kitchen also offers selections of wine on tap and local craft beers.
Donahue — who tries to avoid the “H” word (healthy) —has a name for these types of restaurants that, he says, don’t fall into the typical fast-food genre nor the fast-casual concept. They are ”lifesytle restaurants,” or LSR in insider real estate speak.
“It’s a new kind of service model,” he says.
LYFE Kitchen also has a location in Uptown and in Plano with at least 60 more restaurants coming across the country over the next three years.
“We wanted to make sure we had a national footprint, build out in our primary markets like Dallas,” Donahue says.

DPD’s new online system makes it harder to report neighborhood crime
Story by Rachel Stone and Emily Toman
This past summer, the Dallas Police Department switched from an outdated online reporting system to a new one that has left crimewatch groups without access to information they say would help their mission for safe neighborhoods.
For the last decade or so, anyone could go online and find a crime report with the victim’s name, suspect information, date, time and location of the offense, plus the police officer’s detailed written account of the crime. It’s that account, the narrative, which is no longer available.
“The now-absent details are what gave the reports meaning,” says Beverly Houston of the Hillcrest East Crime Watch, which covers the area northeast of Royal and Hillcrest. “A crime reported simply as
‘Burglarized Motor Vehicle’ doesn’t send the same message as ‘passenger side window smashed, purse and GPS system stolen from car.’ Pretty much, any helpful information I share comes directly from the victim or a witness who wants to share the details to warn or help other neighbors.”
On the old system, police narratives often included details that could help deter future crimes, says Betty-Anne Tyler, who runs the Schreiber Crime Watch, covering the area bound by Midway, Forest, Inwood and LBJ Freeway. She says neighbors want to know how a burglary suspect entered and exited a home, or whether an alarm system was activated.
“I can check and make sure that same point of entry at my resi-
24 prestonhollow.advocatemag.com FEBRUARY 2015
dence is secure,” Tyler says. “Do I have the same stolen items in my house? And how do I protect them? How can I make the same point of exit in my residence more secure?”
The reports also lack information about what was taken from a home or vehicle, a detail that can illustrate just how serious a burglary was and show whether any trends exist.
The police department is working to make more information available, but gradually, says Maj. Robert Sherwin. The initial switch caused much more information being made public than intended. User error landed the department on thin ice legally and ethically, since the details of crimes involving minors and sexual assault victims were accidentally released. Since then, with the advice of consulting
“We have been encouraged by the public’s increasing use of our information from Twitter, Facebook and our DPD blog,” Sherwin says.
These outlets feature important news such as updates on missing persons, cold cases and suspects caught on camera, but the department chooses what to put out there. It doesn’t provide a clear picture of crimes that happened in a neighborhood during a particular time frame.
Tyler says she has never received a straight answer from the department about why she cannot receive the police narratives. She’s simply told, “That’s the new system.”
The department’s information systems division is working to upgrade the reporting features that officers use in the field, which could result in more complete reports.
“It’s been six months,” Sherwin says. “We’ll continue to add features as officers get better with using data fields.”
attorneys, the department has severely limited what crime information is made public.
“Under the old mainframe, we were doing things wrong,” Sherwin says. “We are doing what we’re told, to restrict information.”
The department has made strides in communicating directly with the public, particularly over the past year, via social media.
Until then, the only other option is to file a formal open records request with the city. The Advocate submitted such a request in late November in an attempt to acquire police narratives over a onemonth period for a specific beat in Preston Hollow. When our request hadn’t been answered or addressed in any way after 30 days (the Texas Public Information Act requires governmental bodies to respond “promptly”), we began calling the department’s public information line and still received no response after three messages. Because of our emails to higher-ups in the department, they were looking into our request as of Jan. 15, at the time of publication.
So it remains to be determined whether the city will comply with open records laws, although there is evidence of media outlets obtaining crime information in high-profile cases.
For now, the most detailed information available on neighborhood crime remains “N/A.”

Chic jewelry
Kendra Scott, the Austin-based jewelry designer with a nationwide following, plans to open a boutique at the Plaza at Preston Center , at Preston and Northwest Highway, sometime this winter. Scott (kendrascott.com) leased a space between Lublu and Double R, also recent additions to the center. It will be Kendra Scott’s 18th national store and fourth in the Dallas area. What began as one woman’s mini jewelry collection grew into a multimillion-dollar brand sold at high-end retailers such as Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus. Kendra Scott joins other new(ish) tenants, including RiffRaff, Antek’s Curated and Hanna Isul MedSpa.
From Albertsons to Minyard
Albertsons recently acquired United Supermarkets , known locally for its suburban Market Street concept, and is merging with Safeway, owner of the Tom Thumb brand of stores. Experts guessed that the new conglomerate might sell to San Antonio-based H-E-B or turn some of the existing locations into Market Street stores. But instead, Carrollton-based Minyard bought eight Albertsons and four Tom Thumb stores in Dallas-Fort Worth, including the Albertsons at Northwest Highway and Midway and the Tom Thumb at Forest and Marsh. Minyard (minyards.com), which has been around since 1932, has plans to turn its new acquisitions into its new grocery concept, Sun Fresh Market.
Going Greek
At the southwest corner of Preston and Royal, it didn’t take long for a new restaurant to replace Casita Tex-Mex, which closed in October. Greek Isles softly opened just before Christmas with a traditional menu of gyros, salads, souvlaki and other staples along with a selection of Greek red and white wines. Owner Gus Kostas, a native of Greece, has operated a location in Plano for the past 15 years, employing his sons, John and Chris. Beginning at 6:30 p.m. every Wednesday, local musician Dave Tanner performs swing, big-band and instrumental jazz.
Comfort food
A new restaurant, Dish, was scheduled to open in the former Soleo Mexican Kitchen spot at Hillcrest and Northwest Highway in December but has delayed its opening to “the first half of February,” says the owner, Tim McEneny.

GUT FEELING
One year, the Valentine’s Day card my wife gave to me had quite a unique inscription. The exterior was a generic Hallmark-like card. But inside, in her own handwriting, she wrote: “I love you with all my intestines.”
Thinking about that too literally might make you wretch a little. But she and I had been talking about the words for “love” and “compassion” in ancient cultures. For example, the biblical Greeks located love and compassion in the gut, not the heart.
There’s a great word in their language called “splagchnizomai” (“splag-neats-ohmy-ee”)
Say that three times fast.
“Splagchnizomai” denotes a kind of love and compassion that far outstrips romantic love. It means something like: to be moved, as in the bowels. It denotes a deep-seated feeling and emotion — a visceral reaction to love, compassion and empathy.
We like to say that we have a “gut feeling” about something. Turns out, many ancient cultures agreed.
Even though we’ve lost some of this, we still understand how our emotions can be connected to our gut. Unacknowledged emotion can literally make us sick. That feeling of butterflies, that excitement of the stomach leaping and turning, can signify the most wonderful moments of our lives.
When our emotions get the best of us, when stress, worry and anxiety are all we feel, it’s stomach churning. When we are filled with love, if our gut feels love and compassion, often the rest of our body and spirit feels centered and safe, too.
When Jesus feeds the 5,000 in the Gospel stories, the Bible says this:
“As he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he felt compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd ...”
That’s that word, “splagchnizomai,” right there. Jesus has compassion on them, this
faceless, teaming hoard of humanity. Even though they were interrupting his alone time. He did not react in anger, bitterness or resentment. He showed compassion and love for people he didn’t even know.
God has this same kind of deep-level compassion and love for the world.
During a month littered with overly sentimental chocolates and roses, we throw down the phrase, “I love you with all my heart,” with wild abandon.

UNITY
But far too often, the heart-love of our day feels like it’s a mile wide and an inch deep. It’s schmaltzy, romantic love, and it’s forgotten the moment the rose wilts and the chocolate wrappers go in the trash.
But there’s a deeper love. A love you feel in your gut. A love that moves you to your core. Maybe it starts with how you feel about your children and family. We can learn that same compassion for others, too — even our enemies. Having love and compassion for others is always challenging.
We’re called to love Democrats and Republicans; gays and lesbians, and those who hate them; immigrants, and those who would deport them; our own families, and the families of folks we resent. That’s the love and compassion God calls us to.
So, while I’ve never yet seen the Valentine’s Day card with this greeting, I’d love to. I’d pay good money for a card that says: “I love you with all my intestines.”
That’s the love that can save our world.

A WORKOUT THAT WORKS
For many of us, the well-intentioned New Year’s resolutions we made last month to work out more and eat less are beginning to wane. So what does it really take to sustain an active lifestyle? Two new fitness studios opening soon in Preston Hollow offer the tools you need to do just that.
After spending more than a decade working in the fitness industry, Bryan Whatley is convinced there’s a better way for people to achieve their fitness goals. He believes personalized workout plans, nutrition and highly qualified personal trainers are integral for achieving results for clients.
Whatley is the founder of NexGen Fitness, which is set to open a new location on the southwest corner of Preston and Royal this month. He has a bachelor of science degree from the University of Oklahoma in exercise physiology and is a certified personal trainer through the distinguished National Strength and Conditioning Association.
Each NexGen trainer boasts a similar level of expertise. They use their knowledge to design fitness programs for
each client based on their goals and abilities to guarantee results.
“The education of our staff sets us apart,” Whatley says.
NexGen programs include a variety of fun and energizing workouts, such as resistance training, CrossFit, kickboxing and more. The fitness studio also offers NexGen Ignite™, a free, customized cardio program where clients use a treadmill, elliptical machine or a stationary bike to measure their anaerobic threshold.
“The cardio program helps us show each client where they burn fat as opposed to sugar for energy,” Whatley says. “From that, we design a 16-week progressive program with personalized speed, incline and time limits, taking all of the guesswork out of the equation.”
Another way NexGen keeps workouts individualized is through limiting training group size to four people.
Rather than requiring monthly fees that some other gyms have, NexGen clients pay for one-on-one training, couples

training or group training in their own private suite.
“Other gyms offer personal training, but it’s out on an open gym floor,” Whatley says.
“At NexGen, we train clients in private suites, offering a better workout. The privacy we offer helps clients feel less self-conscious and minimizes distractions.”
Time isn’t wasted taking turns on shared machines, for every private training studio is fully stocked with its own fitness equipment. The small group size and one-on-one training allows trainers to focus on individual needs.
The training studio also offers access to a registered dietician. Recently, NexGen developed a free mobile app called NexGen Nutrition. Clients log food and exercise, and trainers can track progress and advise clients in real time, even outside of training hours.
“Although we primarily focus on personalized workouts, nutrition and cardio are equally as important to overall fitness,” Whatley says. “We look at every aspect of fitness, not just the workout.”
Whatley says years have gone into developing the mobile app and cardio program at NexGen.
“We’ve spent time on this because I know that it will help our clients to achieve their goals.”
Another fitness studio that’s brand new to the neighborhood is set to open in Preston Hollow Village in March.
Orangetheory Fitness offers 60-minute group interval workout sessions split into intervals of cardiovascular and strength training with heart rate monitors to track intensity and maximize metabolic burn.
That’s according to Xan Carr, business development manager at Orangetheory Fitness.
“At Orangetheory, clients will increase their energy, see visible results, and burn more calories — even after leaving the studio,” he says.
The fitness studio’s workout is broken into intervals of cardiovascular and strength training, using a variety of top-of-the-line equipment, including treadmills, rowing machines, suspension training and free weights.
Sessions are open to all adults and teens, ages 16 and older. All fitness levels are welcome as the fitness program is specifically designed for everyone from power walkers to elite performance athletes.
“If weight loss is your goal, you can expect to see an estimated loss of three to five pounds per week attending three to five sessions per week,” Carr says.
“If performance is your goal, you can expect to see an increase in power, speed and strength after your first two weeks of attending two to four sessions per week.”
Orangetheory Fitness has been featured in the New York Times as a plateau-busting workout in which participants can burn up to 900 calories per session. Backed by the science of post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), Orangetheory’s heart rate-monitored training is designed to keep heart rates in a target zone that stimulates metabolism and increases energy.
The fitness center dubs the resulting increase in energy, visible toning and post-workout calorie burn as the “orange effect.”
Another way Orangetheory keeps the energy up is by offering group training. Highly qualified and motivational personal trainers provide a safe and effective workout.
Orangetheory’s philosophy is that the well-rounded
32 special advertising section FEBRUARY 2015 HealthCare ADVISOR special advertising section
movements and pace direction offered in a group setting lead to better results.
“Working out with a group is fun and effective, not to mention the added motivation, endurance, support and accountability,” Carr says.
“People who workout in groups stick to their goals more consistently than those who workout alone.”
STAYING HEALTHY AND ACTIVE AT ANY AGE
Just as a personalized workout plan is necessary for reaching fitness goals, so is individualized healthcare in maintaining a vibrant lifestyle well into the golden years.
Monticello West has been a leader in the community, dedicated to providing senior care since 1970. The forwardthinking staff envisioned that as baby boomers aged, they would need to provide a place where people felt at home and have access to personalized medical care.
“Critical to the overall atmosphere is the combined sense of community with high-quality healthcare,” Monticello West communications representative Robin Daniels says.
“Today, the community is operated by a leading provider of senior living communities, Life Care Services, that shares forward-thinking mindsets and is advancing care through special programs.”
When you meet with the staff at Monticello West, you immediately realize the difference, such as the tenure of staff. The staff is the foundation for the high-quality care, which has been honored with the industry’s coveted fivestar rating.
In today’s modern age of information available on the internet, caregivers at Monticello West respect and realize that families work to gain advance knowledge and expertise about care for their loved one.
“We welcome family discussion and interaction to ensure that residents are receiving personalized, high-quality healthcare,” Daniels says. “Communication is critical throughout all stages of memory care from early-onset to advanced memory loss.”
Monticello West provides the full range of care, including all levels of assisted living to advanced memory care so patients remain in a familiar environment.
“Our goal is to enable our residents to live an active, independent lifestyle while our dedicated team members, including licensed nurses, provide assistance with medications, personal grooming, transportation and other specific services depending on the needs of our residents,” Daniels says.
Monticello West’s chef, Taylor Self, has trained at the world-renowned Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. Self works to get to know residents’ food preferences and provides clean, healthy food choices.
