GEt to work

Actions trump words, even fancy ones, especially in business ventures

Years ago, I knew a guy pretty much like me who called himself an “entrepreneur”.

It wasn’t a hugely common word back then, so identifying someone that way sounded exotic and successful and romantic.

His friends introduced him at dinner parties as an “entrepreneur”, rattling off his various business interests, and at first blush it was an impressive list.

At the time, I worked for a big company in a time-clock kind of job, and being identified as an “entrepreneur” sounded better than my gig. I was spending a good amount of time, both during work hours and afterwards, working to release my inner businessman. In fact, another guy and I investigated buying a gas station, several newspapers, even a Dairy Queen.

But nothing ever worked out, primarily because our cash reserves barely filled the bottom of a cookie jar, and I remained an employee rather than a budding entrepreneur.

Finally, and mostly in frustration, I cornered Mr. Entrepreneur at a party and started asking him about his various businesses, looking for some wisdom I could use to build my own.

He talked and he talked and he talked, and I noticed a pattern: There was a lot of discussion about research into this company and investigation into that business, but when it came right down to it, Mr. Entrepreneur wasn’t one. He was just a guy who liked to talk big about the things he was going to do with his life when the opportunity arose. But as it turned out, when opportunity knocked, as it does eventually for everyone, he didn’t answer.

In fact, his biggest financial accomplishment seems to have been convincing his eventual wife that since sooner or later one of his ideas would surely hit it big, she should contribute to their joint success by funding their family on her own.

Being identified as an “entrepreneur” just sounded good, apparently to both of them, and presumably they were content with their parallel lives of sacrifice and dreams.

No matter that the bottom line showed a wife working a time-clock job a nd a husband talking about business success that didn’t exist. All because he was afraid to pull the trigger on

any of his ideas to find out if he had it in him to make at least one idea work.

Our cover story this month on kid entrepreneurs is the antithesis of this story, in that these kids are doing something. They woke up one day with a dream, and with a fair amount of help and guidance from parents and friends, they’re giving something a try. Just from reading the story, you can sense the hap-

piness and pride they and their families have in what they’ve done, even if the results haven’t exactly been Facebook-like in terms of riches and fame. And who knows where what they’re doing today might lead them or their watchful friends someday.

Talk is cheap when it comes to being an entrepreneur. But talking and dreaming about building a business isn’t all that fulfilling; sooner or later, you have to pull the trigger or live with the consequences.

GOOD LUCK, Z!

Thanks for the story about ‘Z’ (June Lake Highlands Advocate “Zoltan Zsohar, National Senior Olympian”). Our daughter, Elizabeth Ealy Kitay, a 1977 Lake Highlands High School graduate, is also riding in the Nationals, so I sent her your article. Perhaps she will meet him. She races the 5K and 10K events, in the 50-55 age group. She has been a long distance cyclist for many years, and has taken up racing in the past year or two — has won a gold medal in almost every race in which she has participated.

TOWN CENTER TALK

(June 2 Advocate Back Talk blog, “Consultant: ‘Town Center is not a town center’”) I’ve said it before: Lake Highlands is one of the city’s strongest neighborhoods because of its suburban-style — others say ‘small-town’ — feel. Everything being revealed about the Town Center seems in direct opposition to that. The city wants a self-contained, urban, transitoriented community. It just happens to be in Lake Highlands.

OMITTING THE OBVIOUS, RESTAURANT EDITION

Thanks for the cover article and tidbits on many of the area’s restaurants. It was fun to learn about a couple of places new to me. I did, however, notice that neither Picasso’s nor Mi Cocina was mentioned. Picasso’s has an excellent menu, delicious food, and good service. MiCocina has been a neighborhood favorite for many years and is one of the better-known Mexican restaurants in the city. Did I just miss it or was there a reason they weren’t mentioned? Thanks for the good work.

EDITOR’SNOTE: The thought process was that most Lake Highlands residents know about those spots and we frequently write about them either in the magazine or on the website. We do understand why the omissions seem questionable, considering how central these restaurants are to the neighborhood. Keep reading, and we promise you’ll read more about them soon.

CORRECTION: The June story, “Out of the Restaurant Rut” mistakenly listed Varsity Grill and Brothers Pizza at a Skillman address. Both restaurants are located in the shopping center at 9310 Forest.

Create an Outdoor Living Oasis in Your Back Yard

When life’s pressures mount, but your income doesn’t, you need a release. We agree with the wisdom that experiences provide more happiness than things. But what if you could get both, and as a bonus, have your own paradise escape a few steps away?

The “staycation” is growing in popularity as people bring resort amenities into their own backyards. With warm weather through most of the year in Dallas, many of our neighbors are investing in outdoor living. They’re building backyard paradises with fireplaces, fire pits, pergolas, outdoor kitchens, outdoor entertainment, and more.

Patio areas are becoming outdoor living rooms, with many stone and wood choices available to customize the look and feel you want. Pergolas and trellises are options to house your outdoor living area. V-groove or bead board ceilings in many varieties of wood create warmth. Flagstone and granite blend perfectly with your gardens and landscapes, creating a tranquil setting that no paint scheme could equal.

You can even enjoy your indoor entertainment options outdoors, using radio frequency remotes and feeding connections from inside. Listen to the tunes on your Ipod, surf the channels on your satellite system, and control it all from anywhere in your yard.

Fireplaces and fire pits are an ideal focal point for your outdoor entertaining area. The ambience of a fire can help to recreate your idea of a vacation paradise – whether it’s drinking wine in Napa or roasting s’mores at Big Bend. Fire warms the soul and stirs conversation.

All the components that you would expect to find in the most elaborate indoor kitchens are now available for your outdoor kitchen: Sinks, built-in ice chests, refrigerators, as well as infinite counter and cabinetry options. You can create a chef’s kitchen in your yard worthy of a visit from Bobby Flay.

To make your backyard oasis useable year-round, there are several types of outdoor heating and cooling systems. Energy effi cient mini-split systems heat and cool, free standing gas and propane systems are economical ways to keep warm in winter, and fan and misting systems keep you comfortable in the summer months.

The next time you’re under pressure, take a mental “staycation” and imagine your outdoor spaces transforming into an oasis. Almost anything you imagine is possible. When you’re ready, Bella Vista can help.

On May 27, Richardson ISD’s Stults Road Elementary School celebrated being named a National Title I Distinguished School, one of only two in Texas. The honor is the highest level of recognition available to a Title 1 school in the United States. Despite a student population that is 80 percent economically disadvantaged, Stults Road has been an Exemplary-rated school for four consecutive years, with high numbers of students reaching commended status (mastery) on state tests. Festivities included a parade of students and an award presentation by state officials to principal Darwin Spiller.

New Home Construction Process

Part 2: The Building of a Home

In last month’s issue, we covered choosing and working with a builder. Now, here’s what you need to know about the progression of building your new home:

Foundation

First, we clear and grade the soil before building trenches for the foundation. In Texas, most homes are built on a concrete slab, poured over rebar for strength and durability. In the east Dallas area, we also build many pier and beam foundations. These have considerable advantages, though the cost can be higher.

Framing

The floors, walls, stairs, and roof are assembled. The frame is the structure, or the “bones” of the home, and the materials and construction process determine your home’s build quality.

Exterior

What’s new with Lake Highlands Town Center development, shopping and dining? You’ll always know when we email you our Town Center Update.

Before we install your façade and roofing, we’ll talk with you about the advantages and disadvantages of all your options to ensure your home’s lasting beauty.

Mechanical Rough-Ins

Here, the electricity, plumbing, and HVAC systems are installed. We’ll explain how to ensure problem-free maintenance, performance, and lower utility costs.

Interior

The flooring, drywall, tiles, cabinetry, and fixtures are installed and the home is painted. This phase is the most time-consuming. Getting the details perfect is our obsession.

Walk-Through

This is the time to ensure that everything is completed to your liking, and to address any touchups before you sign the final paperwork. We’ll explain how everything in your home works, and then … We’ll Hand You the Keys.

AN URBAN-DEVELOPMENT EXPERT’S TAKE ON THE TOWN CENTER PROJECT

An urban design consultant hired by the city, Ken Narva of StreetWorks, has told the developers of Lake Highlands Town Center that the project’s original plans, mapped out before the economic downturn, are no longer viable. First of all, notes Narva, the project shouldn’t even be called Lake Highlands Town Center. “A Town Center implies a shopping center,” he says. “This is a 70-acre district.” He proposes the “Lake Highlands Mixed-Use District”.

JUNE 2 ADVOCATEBACKTALK BLOG, “CONSULTANT: ‘TOWN CENTER IS NOT A TOWN CENTER’”, BY CHRISTINAHUGHES BABB

COMMENTS:

Good luck getting us all to not call it the Town Center since that’s what it has been called for years already. Besides, the acronym for mixed-use development is MUD. “Meet you at the MUD” just doesn’t have the same ring to it as Town Center. —GM

I think that when the consultant suggested changing the name to Lake Highlands Mixed Use District, he wasn’t strongly suggesting a name change as much as a change in the way we perceive the project.

A consultant from StreetWorks presented plans to for the a mixed-use district.

I believe that the best and the brightest, and market forces, have gotten us where we are today. I also believe that homeowners here are also stakeholders, and we are correct to be skeptical about some of our development that may be good for investors in the short term, but bad for us in the long term.

I think there are some folks within the community that are very vocal that want what they want and really believe there is a sufficient number of affluent households to support it, but I would argue that, and the current state of many of our shopping centers and local businesses would argue that, we have too much retail square footage (and as much as this hurts to say) to be supported by our current demographics.

LaUNCH

For years Lake Highlands resident Caro L Bri C ke LL traveled internationally on business. e ventually, her encounters with poverty-stricken populations drove her to seek volunteer work through her church.

Three years ago she began regularly visiting a clinic in Honduras where she met the people and the pet that inspired her sweet and colorful children’s book, “Cinco the Clinic Cat”, or “ el Gato de Clinica”, whose sales are bringing in money to help fund medical services in the Honduran city of La Ceiba.

What landed you at this clinic in Honduras?

Visiting so many places around the world, such as India, where there is vast poverty, made me think seriously about doing something to help. I mentioned to friends one night that I would like to help children, maybe not in India, but perhaps a little closer to home, Latin America, for example, where I know a little of the language. Days later, a friend invited me on the mission trip to Honduras and I knew what I needed to do. I have been back every year since.

What do you do during the trip?

I read and sing songs with the children and give eye exams in the clinic. The eye exams are a big deal because many of them can’t even buy reading glasses. There have been times when I have put glasses on a child or adults and the tears will start running down the cheeks. They haven’t been able to see. This might mean that they can work again.

AND CINCO, OF “CINCO THE CLINIC CAT” NOTORIETY — IT HE REAL?

Cinco is based on a real cat that hung around the clinic and inspired the book. A friend at the clinic pointed at him and said, “That’s the clinic cat,” and I instantly imagined this children’s book about a cat that lives in this wonderful, tropical setting. One person advised me to write the story down before I forgot it. On the plane ride home, I sketched out a preliminary mock-up of the book.

DID YOU EVER THINK YOU WOULD WRITE A BOOK?

Never in a million years. It was just a flash that hit me.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

It’s a story about kindness and the friendship between a little girl in need of a friend, and a cat in need of a home. Like in reality, the cat is a friend and a comfort to the humans around the clinic.

AND THE BOOK IS IN ENGLISH ANDSPANISH WAS THATA DIFFICULT PROCESS?

Lali Miles is one of my friends who goes on the Honduras trip every year. She grew up in Honduras and serves as our translator. She initially created the translation. Then I asked two colleagues of mine from Latin America one from Argentina and one from Mexico to review the manuscript to ensure that the language was appropriate throughout Latin America. Both are learning and development professionals with small children, so they offered a few suggestions to keep the language simple for young readers. In the end, all three came to a consensus on the final version.

WHATABOUT THE ILLUSTRATIONS?

JimHastings, who teaches art at Studio Arts Dallas [studioartsdallas.com] illustrated the book beautifully. Children love the images; some adults have bought it simply for the artwork.

HOW TO DO YOU THINK THE BOOK MIGHT HELP PEOPLE?

I decided that the profits from the book would go to charities, and that became the driving force that kept me focused on ensuring that we completed this project. I loved working on this story, shining a light on the good work that goes on in this tiny little clinic in Honduras. I am pleased to say that I have already been able to make a donation to a medical clinic in Honduras based on initial revenues from the book. The money will pay for medications that the people in this community otherwise would not receive.

“CINCO THE CLINIC CAT” is available at CincoTheClinicCat.com. There, you can also contact the author for book readings or special appearances. The book is available at My Office (myofficelh.com) at 9661 Audelia at Walnut Hill.

This so-called “Clinic Cat” was the inspiration for the children’s book, “Cinco the Clinic Cat”, written by Lake Highlands resident Carol Brickell. THIS MONTH, SHOP FOR HIM AT A STORE JUST FOR MEN.

Ken’s Man Shop in the Preston-Royal shopping center, owned by Lake Highlands resident Ken Helfman, has partnered with fashion designer Nat Nast and the Wounded Warrior Project to design an exclusive line of WWP men’s buttonup silk shirts. Ken’s Man Shop donates 15 percent of every shirt sale to the WWP, which benefits service men and women wounded in battle. Helfman’s son and business partner Kory Helfman, who spearheaded the partnership, explains that many Ken’s Man Shop customers have served in the military. He says he and his father feel strongly about supporting this organization. “There have been more than 40,000 wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan alone,” he says, “and 300,000 will suffer from PostTraumatic Stress and Traumatic Brain Injury. That is why this is so important.” The Wounded Warrior Project shirts are about $165-$185 and can be purchased at kensmansshop.com or in the store at 6025 Royal, while they last. Please call store at 214.369.5367 to check availability. Visit woundedwarriorproject. org to learn more about the Wounded Warrior Project and Natnast.com for more info about the shirt designer.

HOLY SMOKES

WHENYOUHAVE BRISKET ON THE BRAIN, it’s easy to overlook the side dishes at most barbecue restaurants. But at Back Country Bar B Q, menu items such as the creamed spinach and the baked potato are what get people talking. That’s because they are made in-house from scratch.

“I think that’s what sets us apart from most barbecue houses,” says owner Frank Hart. “A lot of people don’t take the time to do that.” Some guests drop in just a take a few sides to-go. Back Country opened at its Greenville location in 1988 and has become a neighborhood institution. Hart and his pitmaster Earnest Griffith smoke 30 briskets a night. “It’s a slow process,” Hart says. “We don’t get in a hurry.” Back Country has such a loyal following that Hart has seen some of his customers grow from children to adults who are now bringing their kids. “It’s kind of rewarding. I’ve done something right.”

Rieslings are among the world’s great wines, sharing many of the qualities that great wines from other regions of the world have: high prices, long aging and sublime taste. So why do rieslings have such a poor reputation with U.S. wine drinkers? Which is pretty poor, considering that Nielsen reports that we drink three times more white zinfandel than we do riesling.

There are two main reasons for riesling’s neglect. Until the past couple of years, most of the riesling for sale in the U.S. was German, and much of that was of indifferent quality. But the quality of riesling that’s available these days has improved dramatically. We’re not only getting better German wines, but U.S. riesling can be stunningly good. In fact, riesling from places like New York, Michigan and Washington is one of the best-kept secrets of the wine world.

The other reason? Many rieslings are sweet, and Americans have long been taught that sweet wine means bad wine. Which is our loss, since sweet is not a bad thing with riesling. The sweetness occurs naturally, and not as a bag of sugar. In this, the sweetness is part of the wine, something that is balanced by the fruitiness and acidity. And not all rieslings are sweet — they come in varying degrees of dryness, and some are as dry as chardonnay. The leading producers, knowing the challenge they face, have started to label riesling by sweetness, so that it’s easy to tell a dry wine from a sweet one.

In this, riesling is summertime wine — low in alcohol, fruity and relaxing. It’s almost always food friendly, and especially with grilled and boiled seafood, spicy cuisine like Tex-Mex and Thai, and even pork. These rieslings will get you started:

This Washington state wine has a hint of sweetness, apricot fruit, some minerality and pleasant acidity, It’s not complicated, but is a good example of what dry riesling can be.

This is what corporate wine should aspire to: It’s varietally correct, and though it’s sweet, it’s supposed to be. The sweetness isn’t there to cover up a flaw.

The Alsatian Hugel is a top riesling producer, and this dry wine shows why. Look for green apples, peaches and a bit of what is always described as petrol.

WITH YOUR WINE Chicken with riesling

This is as about as easy as chicken and wine gets, and it’s equally as tasty as much fancier dishes that require more work. All you need is a cut-up chicken, lots of onions, and garlic. And, of course, riesling. Serve the wine you cook with for dinner.

Serves four, takes about 90 minutes (adapted from Mark Bittman)

GROCERY LIST

1 whole chicken, cut into serving pieces with skin removed

1 1/2 lb onions, sliced

1 1/2 to 2 c riesling (not sweet)

1 Tbsp chopped garlic

2 Tbsp olive oil

salt and pepper to taste

1. Salt and pepper the chicken and brown it in the olive oil over medium heat, about 3 minutes a side.

2. Remove the chicken from the pan, add more olive oil if necessary and add the onions, salt and pepper. Cook for 15 or 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions soften. Add the garlic, stir and then add the wine, and bring to a boil.

3. Put the chicken back in the pan and bury it in the onions. Turn heat to low and cover. Cook until chicken is tender, 20 to 30 minutes. You can turn the chicken pieces over midway through cooking and add more wine if the dish seems dry. Serve over rice or noodles.

ask the WINE GUY?

I’M ALWAYS HEARING ABOUT ACIDITYIN WINE, AND ESPECIALLY RIESLING.WHATISIT?

The acidity in wine happens naturally (though sometimes the winemaker has to help it along). Think of how a tomato can be sweet and acidic at the same time. Pleasing acidity gives the wine a crisp or fresh taste; unpleasant acidity is described as sour.

never too late to do something big.
It’s never too early, either.

Fashionista and philanthropist

Name: Truc Le

age: 13

Biz: Keeper of Kawaii Online Shop

Petite 13-year-old Truc Le is into girly things — pop bands, pink bows and looking pretty. Her father, a Vietnam emigrant, helped her turn her fashion “obsession” (her own word) into something productive and potentially profitable.

In typical teenage fashion, Truc, an eighth-grader at Richardson ISDs Liberty Junior High (which partially serves Lake Highlands), hasspentmanyhoursaimlesslytextingorchattingonline. Observant dad Loi Le figured his daughter could make better use of her free time, so he helped her set up an online shop. The idea, he says, was not necessarily to turn a profit, but to teach his daughter a skill she could use later in life.

Once the store — Kawaii Online Shop (kawaiionlineshop.weebly. com) — was in place, it was up to her to create the business plan and write the website copy.

She wanted to sell things she and her peers enjoy — accessories, makeup and colored contact lenses that she wears, which are extremely popular with Asian girls, she says. She also offers advice on taking care of purchases, and she keeps a direct line of communication open with customers.

“When an order comes in, I usually respond to the customer ony email and let theym know that I will ship thye order on the weekyend. During the week it yis difficult to shiyp orders because I have school and homework. But I always let them know what to expect.”

“I asked my friends at school what types of things they would buy, and based on that, I decided what I wanted to sell.” One of the first lessons she learned about retail, she says, is that “the more you buy of something, the less expensive it is.”

She sells at a fair price and includes a small shipping fee, which allows her to make a modest profit on each sale.

Her dad helped her buy the inventory in bulk. Even with his help, this process involved trial and error.

“We placed a couple orders that didn’t come out right or where we got items that were of poor quality. I want to feel good about the product I sell, and I want my customers to trust me,” she says. So they kept trying until they got it right.

In addition to being a young fashion buyer, Truc is also a designer. She styles and sews (on a sewing machine that was a gift from dad) hair bows that she sells to girls at school and gives to friends as gifts. Soon, when she feels they are “good enough”, she will sell those in her virtual store, too.

Her father says he’s pleased with the discipline and responsibility she’s gaining from the project. There’s no room for slacking when it comes to a business like this, Truc says.

“Whenanordercomesin, I usually respond to the customer on email and let them know that I will ship the order on the weekend. During the week it is difficult to ship orders because I have school and homework. But I always let them know what to expect.”

Though her online shop’s primary purpose was educational, Truc has earned about $300 profit in about three months. Of that, she donated $100 to victims of the Japanese tsunami.

“I have friends who live in Japan, and my favorite band is Japanese. I just wanted to help in any way I could.”

Through her business, she hopes to save enough money to travel to Japan and see the band she adores, the Japanese hardrockgroupGazette, performlive. What does dad think of that? She’s quite sure he will let her go if she earns the money.

When we bring it up to him, he doesn’t comment, but enjoys a short chuckle.

The young author is here to sign her book, “UH-OH! Giraffe”, the second installment in the UH-OH! Animals series.

For the next two hours, children and adults wait in line for Courtney’s autograph and to hear her story.

Shewrotethefirstbook,“UH-OH! Cat”(colorfullyillustrated byJason Barnes) in 2009, when she was in thirdgrade. The book was a success, and its sales allowed Courtney to donate money to organizations that help animals, which is of utmost importance to her. The UH-OH! brand grew, and she began selling bracelets, speaking and reading to groups, and penning a second story about a hungry Giraffe.

At the zoo that morning, she sold more than 150 copies of “UH-OH! Giraffe” and UH-OH! Animal wristbands, available in the zoo’s gift shop, and she donated $1 from each sale to the Dallas Zoo Giants of the Savanna exhibit.

Immediately after wrapping up that appearance, Courtney’s parents drove her to Costco, where she has both a Saturday and Sunday book-signing.

“She told us that adults at the table don’t help her selling,” Roberts says, “and she was right. We were very impressed by her spirit and initiative.”

It all started with a third-grade “power writing” assignment. Teacher Pam Suter, who has worked at St. Pat’s for 25 years, says Courtney proved particularly creative.

“The power writing assignments, and the type of writing we need to teach to prepare students for a future of research papers and standardized tests, is very structured,”Sutersays, butCourtney was more interested in the story itself, and she came to Suter with ideas.

“I told her to build on what she knows.

At this point, Courtney isn’t sure if she wants to be a writer when she grows up or even if there will be another sequel.

“Everybody wants me to write a monkey story. But I just don’t have the idea yet,” she says. “I really don’t know what job I want to have … I like sports — soccer, basketball and horseback riding — and I think I might want to design sets on movies someday, so I really don’t know.”

For now she’s putting her profits in a bank account, she says, and enjoying the day-to-day adventures.

IS NOT THE SAME AS HAVING MORE MONEY.

When it comes to the number of retirement accounts you have, the saying “more is better” is not necessarily true. In fact, if you hold multiple accounts with various brokers, it can be difficult to keep track of your investments and to see if you’re properly diversified.* At the very least, multiple accounts usually mean multiple fees.

CHEER CAMP CEOS

NAME: Megan Jodie and Janie Trekell, AGE: 17

BIZ: Purveyors of pep LittlegalsgogagaoverDisney, TeenNick and American Idol personalities, but two Lake Highlands teens provethatitdoesn’ttake a multimillion dollar industry to capture the 6- to 12-year-old female market.

WhenhighschooljuniorsMegan Jodie and Janie Trekell show up to the final day of Twist and Shout DanceandCheerCamp dressed in their respective HighlandetteandWildcat cheerleaderuniforms, basedonthecampers’ reaction, one might think TaylorSwiftherselfhad entered the room.

and opened Twist and Shout.

“Other kids got jobs babysitting or bagging groceries, but we wanted to do something fun, and we both love working with kids,” Jodie says. “This way, we can make the money in a week and have the rest of the summer off.”

Trekell adds, “We went to a summer cheer and dance camp that we loved. A lot of our ideas came from that.”

Jodie and Trekell have earned about $1,000 each from each camp. It’s not easy money — they have to learn to balance a budget andorganizethecurriculum for 30 or so children and adolescent-age girls.

This summer’s camp is over, but email thejodies@hotmail.com for a spot in the summer 2012 class.

“The girls just love Megan and Janie, and when they come dressed in the uniforms and pose for photos with the kids, it’s like they are rock stars,” says Angela Ponce, who has two daughters, Hope and Haley, in the camp.

Three summers ago, Jodie (an LHHS Highlandetteofficer)andTrekell(the cheerleading captain and a member of the Wranglers dance team) opened the weeklongcamptogirlsenteringfirst through sixth grades. They charge a fee of $95 per child. The camp is held at the Jodies’ home on Windy Hill from 9-11:30 a.m. during the last week of July.

A typical day, carefully mapped out bythehigh-schoolers,consistsof learningdanceandcheerroutines, swimming and snacking. On the final day, campers put on a show for parents.

Hope Ponce, a third-grader at White RockElementary(and a seasoned three-year veteran of Twist and Shout) learns dance moves, memorizes routines and even helps out with teaching some of the younger girls, which is one of her favorite parts, she says.

“You have to memorize movements … it’s kind of hard, but fun.”

Whentheirpeersstartedgetting summer jobs, Jodie and Trekell decided they liked the moneymaking aspect of a seasonal gig, but they had no desire to work all summer. With a little parental support, the Lake Highlands HighSchoolstudentswith a combined20-somethingyearsofdance and cheerleading experience organized

“We spendtheweek beforecampshoppingfor snacks, water and supplies, andwehadtolearnto spend and ration wisely because the money we spend comes out of our earnings,” Trekell says.

“The campers are separated into age groups — sometimes the younger ones have trouble staying focused, but the older girls help out.”

Theyalsohiredfreshman Highlandettesandcheerleaders, who are paid a small stipend for the week, to assist.

Bothbuddingentrepreneurshave savings accounts for their earnings — Jodiesaysshehasusedthemoney for trips with the Highlandettes, and Trekell dips into her account for gas money and other incidentals, she says.

Happy customers say the idea works becauseitiswell-run,takesplace in the neighborhood, and is fun and meaningful for the little ones.

“My daughter sees these girls as role models, and they are great girls. She is excited to see what’s in store for her at a high school level. And even when she sees Megan and Janie out at a football game or somewhere, they recognize her and talk to her — it makes her feel so good,” Angela Ponce says.

Indeed, her daughter Hope says she wants to be a Highlandette someday, andshecallsthecampleadersher “friends.”

Ponce says the camp is more economical than many summer cheerleading dance camps.

“And it is better — we’re here in the neighborhood. It’s more personal.”

Art s Ale

Name:Aven Stewart

age: 13

Biz: Artist

Aven Stewart makes intricate little collages and, sometimes, big paintings.

But those tend to be too time-consuming or too sentimental to sell. So the 13-yearold artist came up with a way to mass-produce art.

Stewart taught himself to carve and print linotypes, which he sells, along with handmade jewelry, on Etsy.com.

He carves an image into a block that is faced on one side with linoleum. Once the image is painstakingly carved, he rolls on ink and presses the design onto paper by hand.

It’s tricky because the image that winds up on the paper is a mirror of what’s on the block. The part he carves is negative space, the part of the picture that doesn’t get ink. If there are words, he carves the space around each letter to form it.

“It takes a lot of planning,” he says.

A big piece could take an hour or more to plan, and it could take six or eight hours to carve, he says.

He produces some of the linotypes in limited editions of 90, and he numbers and signs each one. So far, he has sold a few linotypes on Etsy for $8-$10 each. His goal is to raise enough money for a printing press, and the cheapest one he can find is $50.

Stewart, who just finished eighth-grade at the Spence Middle School T.A.G. academy, will attend Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts as a freshman.

His parents, David and DeAnn Stewart, are both artistically inclined, and so is their younger son, 10-year-old Liam. They say Aven has been practicing art since he was young.

“He works hard,” David Stewart says.

Aven isn’t sure whether he wants to be a professional artist because, he says, it’s tough to make a living. But he’s already learning things about the art market. He makes intricate collages for himself, and he makes pleasing images to sell.

“You’ve got to figure out what people like and adapt your art to what people will buy,” he says. n

Aven Stewart’s art is available on etsy at etsy.com/shop/aven134.

culture of hope

Dallas’ Housing Crisis Center provides transitional and permanent housing to people who have been homeless, but the organization’s leaders don’t believe in giving handouts, development director Chelsea White says. “We operate under the idea that there is a culture of poverty that keeps

people in a cycle of debt, living check-to-check and dependent,” she explains. The HCC aims at the root of the poverty and homeless problem by teaching people like Lorion Horsley to empower themselves.

Horsley, a young mother of three, ages 6, 7 and 9, lives in a sparkling clean, stylishly decorated apart-

ment in Trinity Palms on Forest Lane. Small and dark, yet inviting, her home has fresh fruit on the table and a meticulous horizontal row of framed photos, most featuring Mom and children, on the living room wall. Horsley, who is one of 50 HCC clients placed in supportive housing at Trinity Palms, has struggled with chemical dependency issues and homelessness. She can live here as long as she follows a few rules — stay clean and sober, regularly see a counselor and caseworker to generate long- and shortterm goals, and secure employment.

You have to work hard to earn a spot in a programlikethis, saysHorsley, who is attendingschoolatRichland College wile her children are in school at Skyview Elementary. Lake Highlands ChurchoftheAscensionandNexus CommunityrecentlyhelpedtheHCC put on a four-week financial workshop called “Living Wisely” in which supportive housing residents at Trinity Palms learned about healthy financial habits. “It’s about teaching them how to save and become self-sufficient, and how to avoidpitfallslike‘payday’and‘quick cash’ loans,” White says. Horsley says heroutlookonfinancesandlifehas changed a great deal since she started working with HCC. “They have given me the opportunity to break free from that so-called‘ghettopoor’mentality,”she says. “I feel really blessed. My children’s lifechanceshaveimprovedgreatly. I think what goes around comes around, and I see that when I do everything I can to make a good life, good things happen. So many people have helped me,” she says, and promises that she’s “not going to cry”. The “Living Wisely” workshop wrapped up in spring, and participating families were given piggy banks as a reminder to “save now, spend later”, White says. From the heavy weight of Horsley’s bank — the one she has designated for “college funds” — it seems she’s off to a good start.

WE SHOULD BUILD SIDE BY SIDE, NOT ATOP EACH OTHER

“Upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

Jesus spoke these words to Peter, or to all the disciples including Peter but not limited to him, or to the disciples about the confession of Jesus as being the Son of God, or to them about his being the Son of God. Take your pick and you’ll likely find yourself in a church with a different surname on the sign outside, because that verse seems to divide rather than unite Christians across time.

But let’s put that to the test another day and call it a red herring for now so that I can get to a different point altogether thereby, obtusely if not abstrusely.

Your columnist has been toiling on your behalf in Spain for some weeks, seeking storylines of a sacred manner. Aside from the beauty, cleanliness and friendliness of the country, one disturbing history lesson comes home to me and with me in light of our July freedom celebrations. Many of the most sacred sites in Spain are the product of three iterations of building projects.

Take the magnificent Mezquita Cathedral in Cordoba, for instance. The Moors built this extraordinary mosque atop an old Visigoth church. They even used stone from that conquered holy building to build their own holy building. And when the Christians conquered the Moors, they rebuilt the mosque into a church.

So the Muslims did it to the Christians, and the Christians did it back to the Muslims. It was always a winner-take-all contest in the name of the same God who went by different names. Alas. (In fairness, the same is true of Muslims re-sanctifying Christian churches in Turkey for their own purposes: the Hagia Sofia being the chief example.)

Couldn’t we all just find our own rocks to build our churches and mosques on? I can’t speak for Islam, but no matter how you interpret Jesus on the rock verse above, none of these is a possible or passable approach.

During the 10th-12th centuries in Cordoba,

the church existed side by side with synagogue and mosque in a flourishing moment of religious history that saw the likes of the Jewish doctor/philosopher Maimonides and the Muslim lawyer/philosopher Averroes, guiding the intellectual climate of the city with a broad-minded tolerance that lacked no conviction. Each was driven out of Cordoba by a strict sect of Islam that purged the Christians, too.

Ferdinand and Isabella’s reconquista project of claiming all of Spain for the Catholic Church (ironically concluded in 1492 as their Italian explorer was sailing the ocean blue) meant that all Jews and Muslims were expelled unless they converted (and even then they had to prove they were sincere). Five hundred years later, few Jews or Muslims live in Spain, notwithstanding the welcome mat being put back out, in theory.

The genius of America’s founders was their vision of a country where true religious liberty would prevail and houses of worship could be built side by side, not on top of each other. We will know whether they are built on rock or sand by the faith and character of the people over time, not by our conquering of one another under a banner of heaven.

Religious liberty is greater than religious tolerance. Tolerance says that one religious group is in charge and allows others to exist. Liberty says no one is in charge so that all may live together freely.

The spiritual threat is from demented, not devoted, religious neighbors. Practicing our faith freely in the presence of others of different faiths who do the same may enrich us — if we listen to one another and learn.

When we cherish and r espect our neighbors of other creeds and no creed, we recall the spirit of Maimonides and Averroes, and in doing so we are the more, not the less, for it.

Kelli Slate, DDS

FAMILY DENTISTRY

Early in her career, Dr. Slate made an important discovery. She was having one of her teeth repaired and lo and behold, the injection didn’t hurt. The dentist who treated her that day inspired Kelli Slate to provide the same skillful and compassionate care for her own patients. “I thought that would be a wonderful thing to do for people who shared my fear,” she says.

For Dr. Slate and her staff, the words “comfort” and “dentistry” go hand in hand. “People are looking for that extra touch of care and compassion,” says Dr. Slate. “They find it here.”

Located in downtown Lakewood in the historic Diener-Mills Building, Dr. Slate’s full-service dental practice provides the latest advancements in preventive, restorative, and cosmetic dentistry.

A Dallas native, Dr. Slate is as dedicated to giving back to her community as she is to caring for her patients. She offers free dental care to clients of Attitudes and Attire (attitudesandattire.org), a nonprofit agency whose mission is helping economically challenged women find jobs and attain self-sufficiency.

Dr. Slate and her expert staff provide a warm, friendly, and fun atmosphere that has inspired a loyal clientele since 1994. As Barbara Paulsen says, “Dr. Slate and the office staff are the best. I no longer dread going to the dentist!”

SELFLESS SHANNON

In response to the Joplin, Mo., disaster, Lake Highlands High School graduate Shannon McDaniel recruited the girls on the high school pom squad she coaches in Columbia, Mo., to help raise money for the Red Cross. She then hopped on a volunteer bus to the center of the disaster area, where she joined a team sifting through lumber, metal and tree limbs to find anything that could be salvaged. Later, she volunteered at a donation warehouse, organizing items for shelters.

HighlandParkCafeteria (1200 N.Buckner, 214.324.5000, highlandparkcafeteria.com) now offers online pre-order options for guests of the Dallas Arboretum’s 1 Concerts in the Garden series (8525 Garland, 214.515.6500, dallasarboretum.org). Concert-goers can choose from freshly made offerings including cookies, sandwiches, chips/guacamole, gourmet cheese trays, salads, hot dogs, BBQ sandwiches, beverages and more when ordering at highlandparkcafeteria.com. All orders must be received by 2 p.m. prior to the concert. At the event, meals are ready for pick-up at the Highland Park Cafeteria van, always located next to the Martin Rutchik Concert Stage and Lawn, as early as 6 p.m. when gates open. Additionally, the van is always stocked with menu items available for purchase on-site, such as made-to-order smoothies for $4.

Matt Tobin, East Dallas resident and owner of Vickery Park , hopes to open his latest concept, Goodfriend , later this month. Located next door to Good 2 Go Taco on Peavy, Goodfriend will bridge the gap between family-friendly restaurant and bar — it will even have high chairs. “My wife and I live in the area, and we kept saying that we wished there was a kid-friendly neighborhood place where we could have some food and drinks and not have to go to a Chili’s or Applebees,” Tobin says. So he’s opening one. Goodfriend’s menu will have 10 signature burgers, each paired with a draft beer, plus a reuben and other artisan sandwiches. The atmosphere will take a tip from Tobin’s good friends

pun intended — at The Old Monk and feature wood paneling, old church pews made into banquettes and other pieces made from reclaimed wood. Tobin hopes that Goodfriend and Chef Marc Cassel’s recently announced beach food restaurant next door, called Peavy Road, will start a chain reaction in the area. “I can’t name names, but I know of at least six to seven restaurateurs looking at the Casa Linda area right now,” Tobin says.

White Rock Yoga Center has opened in the Buckner-Northcliff shopping center, the same complex that houses Gold’s Gym, the Krav Maga studio, Green Spot and the White Rock Local Market. The center offers power yoga, prenatal and “Mommy and Me” classes.

The Richardson-based I talian restaurant Aboca’s Italian Grill 2 (10455 N. Central, 214.346.1700, abocas.com) has opened a second location at the northwest corner of Meadow and Central.

The new location features Italian fare. “Everything is made fresh here, from the sauces to the crepes,” co-general manager Chris Clark says. “People love our homemade desserts — chocolate cake, tiramisu, strawberry cake, even our cheesecake is made in-house with an Oreo crust.” Menu highlights include Chicken

Aboca, a pan-seared chicken breast stuffed with prosciutto, basil and provolone in a spinach cream sauce. Aboca’s is BYOB with a $1 glass fee.

L’Acqua Spa Lounge 3 (8060 Park, 214.365.8060, lacquaspa. com) recently opened at The Shops at Park Lane. The salon offers nail services for adults and children, as well as face and body waxing, facials, massages, sunless tanning and lash services.

It has been rumored that Primo’s founder and Hully & Mo coowner Eddie Cervantes has been scouting out shopping centers at Walnut Hill and Audelia for a possible new Tex-Mex concept. Chris Schwab at Atomic Pie (9660 Audelia, 214.553.5733, atomicpie.com) says, “Yes, Eddie has spent a lot of time between Atomic Pie and Offshores Nextdoor [9660 Audelia, 214.503.1012, offshoresnextdoor.com] recently, and he has expressed interest in the spaces near us and over by Highlands Café [9661 Audelia, 214.349.2233, highlandscafe.com].”

In other Walnut Hill-Audelia news, it seems everyone is searching for more clarity about what’s in store for the remaining retail stores at Lake Highlands Plaza (9661 Audelia) once the residential development begins in the next couple of months. As to what stays and what goes at the intersection’s southwest corner, Mark Dann of Highland Classic Homes (7475 Skillman, 972.679.9295, highlandclassichomes.com) says the 7-Eleven will stay, and “they will be leaving the bank building and looking for local banks ... leaving My Office , the vet clinic and the former florist space and, of course, the strip that holds Highland’s Café and T. Hee Everything else will be gone.”

Meg Robinson of property owner Willingham Property Co says: “Currently there are no specific plans for improvements to the Lake Highlands Plaza shopping center. The owners will consider options for the remaining retail area after the residential lot development has been completed.” David Farris of T. Hee Greetings & Gifts (9661 Audelia, 214.747.5800, t-heegifts. com) says he was told that the tall, pole sign at the center will be changed, but that those are the only plans for now. Kathy Stewart, co-owner of Highlands Café , says she would like to s ee a new façade, lower signage, more pedestrian-friendly spaces, lower and more updated lighting and more landscaping. Stewart says the center, built in the 1960s, hasn’t been updated since the ’80s. “Our commitment to this intersection dates back 10 years or more,” says Stewart and co-owner Anita Siegers, via email. “We began by ‘adopting the corner’ through volunteer work with the LHAIA. When given the opportunity to open a business at the intersection, we jumped in, and now own and

According to Dann, the L-shaped, dual-cul de sac development will have controlled architecture with the majority of houses in brick or stone. “It will be traditional maybe some Craftsman or country French looks,” Dann says. The average square footage of the lots will fall somewhere around 9,000, while the expected average home price will be near $700,000. “Of course, these are averages,” Dann says. “Expect to see homes that are less and more than this in price and square footage.” —MEGHAN RINEY

YOUCOULDN’TTAKE A SEAT;THEY WEREMISSING.

Pedro Tucker is a local carpenter. His company does cabinets, doors, home additions, renovations — you name it. Business has been steady lately despite the economic slowdown. He works hard, and appreciates the simple things in his life.

One of those things is loading up his grandchildren in his 1997 Chevrolet Suburban and heading off to the Barnes

Date: Monday, May 16

Time: Between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m.

Location: 10400 block of Robindale

and Noble across from NorthPark Center. He and the grandchildren enjoy reading, checking out the books, and even munching on pieces of cake from the café.

The Suburban recently became a bit more difficult for his grandkids to ride in, however. The third-row seat was stolen while the car sat in the front of his Lake Highlands North home.

“I just came out in the morning to go to work and noticed they had broken into the car,” Tucker says. “They don’t make an after-market third-row seat for that car, so it’s a pretty hot item. I didn’t feel too bad because the TV and DVD players were still there, and the wheels were still there, too.”

A few years back, he also had a trailer, tools and side-view car mirrors stolen.

To buy a new seat, prices range from $1,100 for a new one to $600-700 online for used, the irony being that many of those online may have been stolen, Tucker notes. He has had trouble locating a seat so far that matches the color of his other seats.

“It’s been a real inconvenience because that third-row seat made it easy to take all our grandkids around,” he says.

Dallas Police Sgt. Keitric Jones of the Northeast Patrol Division says typical burglaries like this occur at night, and the best way to prevent them is to park in a garage if possible or in a well-lit area, or install a car alarm. He says the department does investigate this type of stolen property.

“DPD has a unit designed to track businesses that buy or sell stolen property. This unit’s main responsibility is to have a good working relationship with the owners of these businesses. Therefore, if stolen goods are taken to one of their businesses, we will be contacted,” he says.

This type of crime has been slightly on the rise this year in the Northeast Patrol Division. From January to June this year, the department has investigated 25-30 burglaries of motor vehicles involving the theft of rear seats. For the same time in 2010, the department investigated only about 10. —SEAN CHAFFIN

Lakewood wannabes

Did you know there’s a rivalry going on between Lake Highlands and Lakewood?

If you didn’t, you are a lot like me. Probably most people in Lake Highlands don’t know about it, but it turns out some people in Lakewood feel they need to defend their turf from the likes of us.

The rivalry came to light in an online post on the Lakewood Advocate’s Back Talk blog. In response to the news of a possibility that Mi Cocina may open a restaurant in Lakewood replacing Matt’s Rancho Martinez, it emerged that many Lakewood residents don’t want to be anything like Lake Highlands. Apparently even the words “Mi Cocina” remind them too much of us, their northern neighbors.

Worse, they think of us as “wannabes”, aspiring to be either Lakewood or even the Park Cities.

Who knew?

It’s not my intention to fan the flames, but I can’t help wondering if anyone besides me finds the idea of a rivalry between Lakewood and us amusing. Is it a breach of etiquette to wear a Wildcat T-shirt while shopping at their Whole Foods?

Frankly, Lake Highlands residents aren’t compelled to compete because we understand that each neighborhood covers different needs. If there is one reason anyone would choose to live in Lake

Highlands over Lakewood, the answer is simple: Richardson ISD. Even so, this whole rivalry idea has got me thinking. As the developers continue to work out the best plan for the Town Center, part of the debate revolves around what it should be called — is it a “center” or a “district”? As long as everything including the name is in flux, I would like to put forth a recommendation I haven’t seen on the table yet — but it just might work.

At an open meeting between the developers, the TIF board and concerned citizens, Blaydes recently reminded the developers that original Town Center plans excluded any sort of vast parking space (like the eyesores currently evident at Walnut Hill and Audelia). Everyone knows if we follow the Lakewood model, we would see much less parking than that.

The current plan for the residences is that they will be upscale, aimed at a target population of young professionals. If you have been in Lake Highlands any length of time, you have heard that one before. Apartments have been built for this elusive species. Some of them have been converted to Section 8 housing.

Everyone has heard of young professionals (or, as they are now called, “DINKs”

I propose we call it “New Lakewood”. “Lakewood” is a concept that has never been tried outside of Lakewood, after all. It is very successful in Lakewood. We admit it — we love Lakewood. Is this a nobrainer or what?

Furthermore, if the developers go with the New Lakewood theme, a lot of the things we worry about will not happen. There could never be a big-box grocery store. All the storefronts would be one story high. Residences would not be seven stories tall. The clock tower (a feature former councilman Bill Blaydes cherishes) would be an excellent fit in New Lakewood.

Double Income No Kids) but sometimes I wonder if they only exist in the minds of developers. I think the last actual sighting of this group in high numbers was at a Big Foot safari back in 1989. If there is a new crop here in Dallas, probably most of them already live in Lakewood.

That’s why it would be smart to build these residences along the New Lakewood model. That means two stories high, so you won’t have too many units to fill. And if they are popular, so much the better. That will keep the prices at the upscale level you want to charge.

When you get right down to it, what we really want at the Town Center is Lakewood. We have been saying that all along, but it took us until now to find the right words. Lakewood is charming, successful, funky and cool.

I can’t wait for New Lakewood to open!
