When it comes to colon cancer detection,
45 is the new 50.
If you’re in your mid-40s and haven’t had your colon checked, it might be time. Screening guidelines have changed. The American Cancer Society’s guidelines for colon cancer screening now recommend that adults at average risk get screened starting at age 45 instead of 50. Getting screened is the first step in prevention. Talk to your doctor about which screening option is best for you. Methodist Dallas Medical Center providers offer personalized healthcare services for every stage of life and every state of health. Trust. Methodist.
Take a free colon cancer risk assessment. Visit MethodistHealthSystem.or/ColonHRA or for a physician referral, call 877-637-4297. Texas law prohibits hospitals from practicing medicine. The physicians on the Methodist Health System medical staff are independent practitioners who are not employees or agents of Methodist Dallas Medical Center, Methodist Health System, or any of its affiliated hospitals. Methodist Health System complies with applicable federal civil rights laws and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, disability, or sex.

COMING SOON
Brand new primary care facility. Same great neighborhood.
Methodist Health System has been caring for our friends and neighbors in Oak Cliff for more than 90 years. And now, we’re proud to announce a brand new primary care facility, complete with pediatrics. Meet Kensey Saltarelli, MD, and Kyle Oholendt, MD. Both are double board certified in Pediatrics and Internal Medicine. The neighborhood we call home just keeps getting better and we’re dedicated to supporting its vibrancy, creativity, and health. We hope we’ll see you soon.

Methodist Family Health Centers and Medical Groups are owned and operated by MedHealth/Methodist Medical Group and are staffed by independently practicing physicians who are employees of MedHealth/Methodist Medical Group. The physicians and staff who provide services at these sites are not employees or agents of Methodist Health System or any of its affiliated hospitals.
Pastry chef Chayanne Rooney builds a pan of peach danish. She’s also the home-based bakery’s delivery driver.
OAK CLIFF BREAD CO. takes “local” a step further. Not only is its bread baked fresh in the neighborhood; it’s also made from heritage wheat grown in Lamesa, Texas. All of the cottage bakery’s loaves and baguettes are made from yecora rojo wheat sourced from Barton Springs Mill and milled in Oak Cliff. Tyler Rooney, 32, started the bakery with his wife, Chayanne, in 2020. A baker since 2015, he was laid off from Maccellaio after Texas restaurants were ordered to close last year. “I just wanted to stay in the rhythm and stay with what I always wanted to do, which was bake bread professionally,” Rooney says. So he started baking bread for the neighborhood. In October, they formed an LLC and invested in a refrigerator that can hold 60 loaves as well as a compact bread oven. They do everything in their kitchen at home. Now Oak Cliff Bread Co. has two bake days a week, offering $8 sourdough and rye loaves, $5 baguettes and $4 croissants and other laminated pastries for porch pickup or local delivery on Fridays or at the Dallas Farmers Market
on Sundays. They sell about 150 loaves and baguettes a week and about as many pastries. The Rooneys live near the Dallas Zoo. They’ve been married five years and have two kids, ages 5 and 2.
“Bread is so simple. It doesn’t have to be super impressive.”

WHY BREAD MAKING
I’ve always loved how hands-on it is. I love the physicality. I love the tools. It’s become sort of an obsession at this point. You can have a good bake one day, but you always think you can do better, so it’s a constant rhythm and the repeating of the process. It’s also so simple. Coming from fine dining, sometimes it’s so complicated, and bread is so simple. It doesn’t have to be super impressive. It takes a long time, and most people don’t want to do it, but I love it.
HOW LONG IT TAKES
Prep starts on Wednesday, and I also do all the laminating for croissants on Wednesday. I mix the dough the night before, and it takes an entire day for lamination. It’s a three-
#1 IN OAK CLIFF
day process for laminated pastries. The sourdough has to ferment for six hours, and then I shape it and throw it in the fridge for 18 hours. Then we bake all day on Friday. MILLING GRAIN THEMSELVES
We work with Barton Springs Mill to get 50 pounds of yecora rojo wheat delivered to our door every week, and we mill it ourselves. Not every city has a local mill and farmers who grow these heritage grains. But cottage bakers across the United States are making that link from farmer to mill to baker. Since the 19th century, no one has really been doing that. Milling doesn’t take very long, and it makes the bread more flavorful, more delicious, and we’re investing in the local grain economy. TYLER AND CHAYANNE MET WORKING IN KITCHENS
She does all the packaging and delivering, and she’s the numbers person, but she’s also a kitchen person as well. She worked at Joy Macarons before we started the business.

AT ZANG by RENEE UMSTED
Christine and Jonathon Erdeljac had been wanting to open a restaurant for several years. They considered buying BECKLEY BREWHOUSE, but it didn’t make sense financially. When the spot closed, the landlord offered them a deal, and they accepted. “It had all the bones it needed. It was pretty much set up for us to come in and paint and add our touch to it,” Christine says. “And it was cute. It was charming.” JONATHON’S OAK CLIFF opened in 2011 at the corner of North Beckley and Zang. Since then, the Erdeljacs have expanded to a second location nearby. When they first started, they didn’t know too much about the neighborhood, but over the years, they’ve seen it grow.

There’s been quite a bit of turnover at 1115 N. Beckley Ave. In 2005, it was a restaurant called ALLEY OOPS. Then it became THE OC TAVERN in 2009. That place had a brief time in business before LA CARRETA ARGENTINA opened in its spot in 2010. In 2011, design firm COEVAL STUDIO opened Campo there with Matt McCallister in the kitchen. The restaurant received favorable reviews for food and cocktails, but it closed after about a year. THE OUTPOST took over in 2011 and lasted a few years. Next, VH CASUAL DINING & BAR set up shop in 2015. Most recently, Beckley 1115, a new wine bar from renowned chef SHARON VON METER, is expected to open this fall.

We analyzed restaurant inspections from the first six months of this year to see how many restaurants didn’t make the grade. Before anything happens, consider establishing a trust. A merged brood naturally comes with competing interests from biological children, stepchildren and new spouse, as well as intricate financial issues and emotions. Avoid contention down the road by having group conversations early and often, explaining wishes and preparing all parties for some-day future events. Strategies to simplify complex dynamics — and to protect assets from former spouses — hinge on creating a detailed estate plan, which must include a trust. Elbows down, pints up Cheers for these locally owned breweries ›
T
he brewing industry saw an overall revenue decline of 2.5% last year after a decade of growth and prosperity, especially among small local breweries. Our beloved neighborhood watering hole, Small Brewpub, closed at the end of 2019, and we are still craving that Black Pepper Pils. Luckily, we still have a lot of great breweries close by to choose from. At this point, Oak Cliff technically only has one brewery, Oak Cliff Brewing Co., but West Dallas has a couple. And if you’re down to cross the bridge, close-by breweries in the Design District (AKA the Beer District) include Texas Ale Project, Community Beer, Peticolas, Pegasus Brewing and Cidercade. Here are our favorite things about breweries on this side of the Trinity River. Story by MATT ABENDSCHEIN Photography by KATHY TRAN

Ash & Ember This new brewery hit the scene last summer. While it has been a difficult start, this brewery in Cedar Hill has made quite the impact in its community. One of the co-owners and brewers, Tim Martin, lives in Oak Cliff. It’s a quaint building tucked into a small Cedar Hill neighborhood right off of U.S. Highway 67. Interior elements were built by hand, a testament to the love and care that the team puts into its craft. The whole idea behind this venture, according to co-owner Brian Krajcirovic, is to recreate classic styles and to become an integral
part of the Cedar Hill community. Krajcirovic says the taproom is family friendly, and he wants people to feel welcome. The beer is currently being brewed on a small five-barrel system, but lots of styles are being churned out. The High Pointe Porter is a delicious English-style porter that once won first place at the Brew Riot homebrew competition, before they started this venture. In the taproom, this brew is only served from a beer engine, which naturally carbonates and slowly draws the beer up through the tap, producing the creamiest porter.
Oak Cliff Brewing Co. Established in 2018 by homebrewer Joel Denton, a third-generation Oak Cliffer, this has become a local staple for many in our neighborhood. Before COVID became a household name, we frequented this family and dog-friendly establishment every Friday. Its taproom is large and inviting, with windows looking into the brewhouse where the magic happens. If you’re lucky enough, head brewer Walker Smith’s dog Walt may just invite you in himself. The beer selection is as diverse as its clientele. Ranging from malty (Black Lager, Malone’s first homebrew recipe) to yeasty (Hefeweizen, its popular take on the classic German wheat) to hoppy (Lee Hazy Oswald, a balanced yet juicy
hazy IPA) to big and bold (Sombre, a 13% abv Imperial Stout that will knock you off your feet if you’re not careful), anyone can find a beer to drink here. The Paleta Weisse series has also been a fun treat, taking a typical weisse (wheat) base and adding traditional paleta flavors like mango, pineapple/jalapeno, cucumber/lime and vanilla/tangerine. While last year was a challenge, Malone found opportunities as well. Stay-at-home orders brought on the need for curbside pickup, where colorful 32-ounce crowlers (think big cans) were flying off the tap walls. These can still be ordered online and picked up at the brewery. There is also a creek-side biergarten.

SO ICY THREE DRINKS FOR A COOLER SUMMER

HORCHATA
Chocolate sales are through the roof in October-May. August? Not as much. The family of entrepreneurs behind CocoAndré wanted to make more money during the summer months, so four years ago, they started producing horchata. Now the rice-based milky drink is part of their name: CocoAndré Chocolatier & Horchatería. The craft drinks cost $4.50-$7 and come in flavors including strawberry, matcha, pecan and cacao. Coco-André recently brought back pineapple horchata because of customer demand, and peach could see a comeback this summer for the same reason. Co-owner Cindy Pedraza Puente says the shop is well-known for its vegan horchata. This Belgian-style chocolatier also serves aguas frescas in flavors like hibiscus and tamarind, and they serve locally made paletas that can be dipped in chocolate. The café also serves espresso and craft coffee drinks, plus pan dulces from Alebrijes Café in Oak Cliff.
MANGONADA
Here’s a cool treat that brings the heat. Mangonada is a mango smoothie swirled with chamoy, and in our neighborhood, it can be found in fruiterías and snack bars all around. At La Chula Michoacana, they come in three sizes that cost $4-$6, and they’re over the top, loaded with candy like Lucas Salsaghetti and served with a candy-covered straw. Chamoy No. 5 makes its own chamoy, the sticky chile-lime flavored condiment that makes sweet flavors pop. This snack bar’s mangonada is more demure, with less candy, but its greatness is in the simpler ingredients. La Chula Michoacana 211 W. AGUAS FRESCAS
This is not the stuff ladled from plastic barrels at a county fair. En ca n to Po ps c ra f ts a g u a s f resca s f ro m f res h - sq u e eze d juices and house-made syrups in layered flavors that are utterly delightful. Aureliano Diaz worked as a bartender for several years and has dreams of owning a cocktail bar. Since he’s already an owner of Encanto Pops with his sisters, Diana Diaz Thompson, Edith Diaz Garza and Paola Diaz, he’s done the next best thing, concocting aguas frescas for customers of their paleta shop. Favorites include Junior’s Special, which comes with passion fruit, cucumber, blood orange, lime, ginger syrup and cane sugar. The Little Mexico has mango or passion fruit, strawberry, lime, ginger syrup and agave nectar. Many customers order the classic lime and cucumber. And you can also build your own, choosing up to three fruit bases and two syrups. These 25-ounce drinks cost $9, or $10 with Topo Chico, but they’re made to order and so fresh and tasty, served in a bag just like drinks the Diaz siblings used to buy as kids growing up in Juarez. Encanto Pops marks its fifth anniversary in business this summer, and its unique hand-crafted pops cost $4-$5.50 each. The aguas frescas are great for a non-alcoholic treat or served with a splash of spirits. Encanto Pops 831 W. Nap champ Re n ewa l co m es f ro m re c rea t i o n
I
’m writing from far West Texas, in the Big Bend, Davis Mountains area. We’re on vacation for these next few days and grateful to be out in nature. One of the most amazing things here is the night sky. We take our lawn chairs out each night, and stare into the vastness of space above. The entire hazy cloud of the Milky Way band stretches from horizon to horizon. The twinkling stars are so numerous that they are impossible to count. For as many times as I have seen such a night sky, it never ceases to take my breath away, and it always makes me gasp with wonder. It’s a view we can’t seek in Oak Cliff. There’s too much city light. Those stars are always there — even in Oak Cliff — but they’re obscured by the lights we tell ourselves we need to feel safe. The vast, deep West Texas sky reminds me of our relatively small position in the entire universe. It’s a powerful reminder of how small we are. And, therefore, how small the problems and worries we carry around every day. That Milky Way band knows nothing about our fears, our worries, our concerns. It’s there to humble us, if we allow it. The Prophet Isaiah comes to mind: “Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.” (Isaiah 40:26) I’m grateful to God for the gift of the night sky. It’s summer now, and everything I am hearing about this season from our Oak Cliff families is that the time feels compacted and urgent. The school year has been compressed on both ends. With the world feeling safer to travel, a lot our neighborhood families are heading out during July and early August.
I’m glad to hear that. Maybe you were gone during July. Maybe you’re just leaving now, for a quick pre-school August trip. Whatever your plans, I hope you can get out into the world this summer. And even if you can’t travel far, remember how blessed we are to have areas like Lake Cliff Park, Twelve Hills, Kidd Springs, White Rock and the Trinity River nature preserve. There are places, just minutes from your front door, that can take your breath away too. Our minds can trick us. They tell us, “I don’t need to take a break … I can just power-through my job, my family obligations …” But we must “get away” from time to time. If we don’t take breaks, then burnout, anger and hopelessness set in instead. There’s a reason why the word “recreate” is a contraction of “re-create.” We must constantly “recreate” in order to create our future. All work and no play is not just sad; it can be dangerous and counterproductive. All through history, those who’ve created new and innovating things in science and art have often done so after a nap, a walk among nature or after gazing in wonder at the night sky. I am thinking of the late great Steve Jobs, who was famous for holding business meetings while walking through his Palo Alto neighborhood at night. Some of the greatest technological innovations and concepts of our time came from people who went on a walk outside in nature, with Steve Jobs. After a pandemic year, cooped up in our houses, we all deserve a break this summer. Recreate so you can re-create your life, filled with new hope, energy and compassion.

ere’s how the corner of Jefferson and Polk looked in 1980. The corner restaurant still serves Mexican food as La Hechizera Tortas. Rick Furniture, a company that dated back to 1872 in Dallas, had a storefront on Bishop Avenue starting in 1925 and then moved to Jefferson Boulevard in the ’40s, where it had a presence for decades. When this store at 1005 W. Jefferson was “modernized” in 1951, its neon sign was touted as “one of the largest of its kind in Oak Cliff.” The building has since been replaced by a four-story office building.
By the late 1970s, the company was being run by a fourth generation of the Rick family and had moved to 611 W. Jefferson, taking over the bygone Sears store where Fiesta Mart is now. Their 175,000-square-foot store had parking for 500 cars and a play area for kids. Shoppers were offered coffee and soft drinks. The Rick family closed its Oak Cliff headquarters in 1984 after a dispute with a national computer manufacturer that sold the company an inventory and ordering system that the furniture store’s owners said never worked.
