THESE ARE THE PEOPLE IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD

Neighbor Jill Louis on philanthropy, social justice and her Preston Hollow favorites

Interview by JEHADU ABSHIRO | Photography by DANNY FULGENCIO
ALL ABOUT SERVICE

Neighbor Jill Louis recalls when North Central Expressway was a four-lane blacktop. She grew up in our neighborhood’s Midway Hills and attended St. Rita Catholic School. Her father is a physician, and her mother’s a journalist. Louis left Dallas for Howard University, starting her own path to journalism before deciding to attend Harvard Law School. Louis moved to Oak Cliff after marrying her husband, Randy Bowman, 27 years ago. She eventually found her way back to Preston Hollow in 2004. Comfort food for her is a TJ’s Seafood Market salmon burger and truffle fries, and her family frequented Fish City Grill before the tornado. Daughter Bella loves the cookies from Celebrity Bakery. Louis, a corporate lawyer and partner at Perkins Coie LLP, serves on the board of trustees at Howard University and on the executive committees of KERA and the AT&T Performing Arts Center.

Why did you decide to move to Preston Hollow?

We just loved the trees and the expansiveness of it. It felt pastoral while being in the heart of the city, and it was very important to us to truly live in Dallas and be part of the city. It’s a very vibrant community in that way.

Why did you end up going to law school?

I was a journalism major undergrad at Howard University. Then the Christine Craft litigation happened when she was terminated and she sued for age discrimination. [In the 1980s, Craft alleged she was removed from her Kansas City TV anchor position for being “too old, too unattractive and wouldn’t defer to men.” She sued and won, but the verdict was overturned twice.] My takeaway from that was that somehow female journalists were being devalued as they aged. I want to be in a profession where my value increases as I age. I had to sort of reset my thoughts on what am I good at?

How did you end up in corporate law?

I wanted to understand business. I felt that as an African American, there were so many excellent litigators, civil rights lawyers, but that we did not have many who were in the transactional space. It was important to me to learn about how business worked and to be able to bring that back to my community and to benefit my community by my knowledge of business.

How did you turn that interest into community involvement?

Community involvement is just where my heart is really. I remember when I was in middle school at St. Rita and visiting a nursing home. I ended up being responsible for

feeding this one woman. As I was feeding her, I learned that she was actually my classmate’s grandmother. I remember the good feeling that I had from being of service to her. When I went to Howard, it was further instilled. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s motto is service to all mankind. It is just something that has always been a part of my life. If I’m able to achieve anything, it’s because I’m supposed to pour something back into my community. It’s how I was raised. It’s my orientation.

Why did you start working with KERA?

KERA is really a labor of love. My mother, Marjorie Lewis, was on Newsroom [a 30-minute news program that premiered on KERA in 1970.] She’s the first African American female to be on television in Dallas. She covered education, civil rights and healthcare. It was an opportunity to carry her legacy forward in what is a very important resource.

What about the AT&T Performing Arts Center?

I love the arts. But even more importantly, I credit the arts with my daughter’s success in life. My daughter had a speech delay. I put her in theater because I wanted her to have reason to talk and learn to present. It was a phenomenal experience. She’s now a senior theater major at Austin College. The arts have the ability not just to entertain, but to educate, to build bridges to help with human development.

And your family’s new project?

The largest project that my family is involved in is the launch of At Last, which is an urban boarding experience for children in poverty. We’ve gotten a lot of great support from the major foundations here in Dallas. It’s vital to this community to pull out of poverty. My husband grew up in Pleasant Grove, and he understood that education was his way. He was a little bit of a lightning-in-the-bottle strike. He doesn’t want everybody to have to be that lucky.

At Last is your current family’s project. What’s next for you? Oh, more. My other project that I’m working on is with my law firm. We have a pro bono project where we’re representing Mothers of Black Boys United. That was started in response to the murders of Philando Castile and Trayvon Martin. We are doing research to show their disparate impact on communities of color. Part of what’s happening when you see these verdicts that no one understands and that set our cities literally ablaze is the law that underpins all of this. That’s a direct outgrowth of systemic racism. If we are able to combat that at the policy level, it’s like trying to combat a disease at the cellular level.

“If I’m able to achieve anything it’s because I’m supposed to pour something back into my community. It’s how I was raised. It’s my orientation. ”

How has Alpha Kappa Alpha Impacted you?

My initiation into Alpha Kappa taught me how to really balance my time. I’m a full-time lawyer. I raised two children, When I had a newborn, I never took maternity leave from the Junior League of Dallas. I continued to fulfill my service requirements while being a junior associate at a major law firm. I credit that with my sorority training. You’ve got to find a way to get it done.

And you know Democratic vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris?

She’s a line 44 sister. She was just Kamala Harris when we were joining Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority at Howard.

How has the relationship sustained over the years?

The thing about our group of line sisters is that we are very close. We understand the bonds and the benefits of sisterhood. We’ve gotten married, we’ve raised children, we’ve grown in our careers, and through it all,

we’ve stayed connected. We’re coming up on 35 years. We know that we can always call on each other. When she decided that she was going to run for president, she called me before she announced, and she said, “I’m going to run for president. And I want you with me.”

Depending on what happens in November, do you want to be involved in politics on a national level?

I am a Texan, and I’m planning to be here in Texas. I will be very honored to be able to support the work that our country will have to do to recover from this health crisis of COVID, to recover from the economic crisis and actual change in policy with respect to racial justice. This is my little home office, very well-placed right here in Preston Hollow, to serve our nation because it will take people doing this across the nation and in all of their neighborhoods to really make the difference.

This interview has been edited for clarity and brevity.

5FAVORITE THINGS:

Belles

It hasn’t been a kind year to nonprofit organizations. Many events critical to fundraising have been indefinitely postponed or canceled.

For the first time its history, the Cattle Baron’s Ball was canceled after attempting to shift the event outdoors to Klyde Warren Park Downtown.

“We were extremely disappointed, because we thought the outside venue was going to be our shot to be able to do this,” co-chair Heather Randall says. “We’re going try to raise as much money as we can for cancer. We’re hoping to find unique and creative ways.”

DID YOU KNOW?

The Cattle Baron’s Ball has featured Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, George Strait, Waylon Jennings, Brooks & Dunn, Clint Black, Dwight Yoakam, Big & Rich, Toby Keith, Sugarland and Brad Paisley.

With an attendance of more than 3,000 guests, the Cattle Baron’s Ball is the largest single-night fundraiser for American Cancer Society research. During its 46-year history, the typically star-studded event has raised more than $85 million, funded 47 Nobel Peace Prize-winning scientists and assisted more than 40,000 cancer patients.

The organization is moving forward with a virtual raffle Oct. 2-17, along with a silent auction. (Visit cattlebaronsball.com for more information.) Despite canceling the event, the organizers say many supporters are allowing the charity to keep ticket funds and sponsorship donations.

“It was so generous and sweet because they know we need it,” cochair Diane Hamilton says. “We really want to make sure every dollar that comes in goes straight to research.”

How did you end up in philanthropy?

I worked in Microsoft and did marketing for a few years. I stayed home for a little while. I volunteered for fundraising. I joined the Junior League of Dallas, and I was doing side projects, and someone asked me “Why don’t you come join the underwriting team in Junior League?” I said “No, no, no,” but it turned out that I loved it.

How did you end up in education?

I wound up doing the fundraisers at Greenhill School, and they hired me. When I went to Parish (Episcopal School), I ended up doing the same thing. That’s kind of how I got into education, because I wanted to be that stay-at-home mom, but yet I needed to work, too. I got to be around my son. Now that my son has graduated, he doesn’t understand why I haven’t left Parish. But I just truly love Parish, and I love the people.

What other organizations are you involved with?

I’ve dedicated this year to Cattle Baron’s. The Family Place is near and dear to my heart. I’ve been involved with Deck My Room. It’s amazing. I had the opportunity to do that with my son, and it’s a really cool organization. I love Community Partners of Dallas.

Advice for someone interested in Dallas philanthropy?

Join the Junior League of Dallas. If you want to learn about Dallas and figure out where your personality traits fit in, they’ll help you figure it out. If you want to do fundraising like me, or if you are a finance person, there is a home for you.

HEATHER RANDALL

Assistant Vice President, Senior Legal Counsel - Mobility and Entertainment at AT&T

Preston Hollow Favorites: NorthPark Center, North Haven Trail, Preston Center, Hillstone, R+D Kitchen

How did you end up in law?

I was a ballet major when I first got to the University of Texas. Then one day, I decided I wanted to be a forensic psychology major. I decided to combine psychology with a law degree, and I became a lawyer.

How did you end up in philanthropy?

I first started with philanthropy with the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, and then I was on the board of the Girl Scouts of North Texas. About the same time, I was brought on as underwriting chair for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society for the Valentine’s Day luncheon. The year after that, I chaired my first event, and the rest of history.

How do you pick which charity to support?

I really do believe in charity that revolves around kids and also cancer. My dad died of cancer. Between diagnosis and death, it was only two weeks. It was a really, really bad period, and to think that somebody could have cancer, and no one knew. The trauma treatment was really scary, and so when I was approached, that was in the back of my mind.

What makes Cattle Baron’s different?

There is an amazing group of ladies from across the community. How often do you have 100 committee members who all have one goal in mind? It’s really impressive. It makes it an even more exciting event since people really look forward to it. And it’s for an amazing organization — the American Cancer Society.

14 prestonhollow.advocatemag.com october 2020
“It’s 100 women that drive diversity across all realms. It’s 99 instantaneous friends. It’s really neat to work alongside them in pursuit of a mission.”
“I love the impact the Cattle Baron’s makes. I love being a part of organizations that you see the difference you’re making.”

DIVE COASTAL CUISINE CELEBRATES 10 YEARS

WHEN CHEF FRANCHESCA NOR FIRST OPENED Dive Coastal Cuisine, she wanted to create a spot inspired by the many places she’s lived. With the ocean close to her heart and a passion for foods of all colors of the rainbow, Nor brought Dive to a community of customers who have since become family to her.

Nor originally intended for Dive to be a chain. However, once she built a strong customer base and tested out recipes on them, each recipe became unique and special to her.

“It showed me long term, with the quality of product that I use, I could not make it a chain,” Nor says. “It would lessen the quality. I really stayed focused on making just the best quality food with the most efficiency and most consistency within my restaurant.”

Nor’s passion for food began in childhood. She grew up in Los Angeles and San Diego, and her parents took her to restaurants, where she ordered shark and caviar. Nor even met Wolfgang Puck when she was 6.

IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD

Nor initially went to college to study photography and art. It wasn’t until she was around 20 years old when she decided to go to culinary school. She studied at the Cordon Bleu in Italy and at Johnson & Wales University in Miami.

“I wanted to know every trick of the trade,” Nor says. “Not only did I want to cook, I wanted to own a restaurant and create the whole design concept.”

When Dive opened 10 years ago, it was a more fast-casual setting. In 2018, the restaurant underwent an overhaul.

“We took a Dunkin’ Donuts and just basically put some tables and chairs in it and a couple slabs of paint to try to open the restaurant,” Nor says. “And we lived with that for eight years. And then the last few years, we gave it a bar and just gave it a little bit more class and a little more warmth. We literally closed the restaurant for three weeks and did the entire remodel in three weeks. That was a huge whirlwind.”

When she’s not at Dive, Nor enjoys gardening and spending time outdoors with her 4-year-old son.

Nor says her customers have made the current economic crisis easier for her.

“This is a very loyal neighborhood to a small business owner,” Nor says. “When you really show that you care about what you’re doing, it resonates with the public here.”

Nor encourages customers to try something new each time.

“If you love that one thing and you get it all the time, I promise you, whatever else you’ll try, you’ll love, and you might even change your mind and get that every time,” she says. “Expand your mind when you come here. The whole menu is delicious.”

Bruce’s signature design style is modern with an homage to mid-century style. Bernbaum-Magadini was founded in 1998 with Patricia Magadini. Born and raised here, Bruce has seen Dallas architectural trends change during his 40 year career.

“Dallas has seen a rise in modern design,” Bruce says. “I believe that Dallas still has a traditional mindset that trends to consider a ‘transitional’ aesthetic.”

Rise from the rubble

HOW THIS ARCHITECT IS REBUILDING HOME

Bruce and Cindy Bernbaum were sheltering in the center hall bathroom of their Preston Hollow home when the tornado hit. At first, all was quiet. Then they heard glass breaking, smashing sounds and the power went out.

“We really had no time to panic,” Bruce says.

Leaves and insulation quickly covered the bathroom floor. When it was over, some of their home’s walls were missing, windows were destroyed, and debris from the storm covered the front lawn.

“Do you think we’ll get new floors?” Cindy asked.

“I think we might get a new house!” Bruce told her.

The couple had lived in their 1954 midcentury modern Northaven Road home since 1995.

It was one of over a 1,000 homes that were damaged or destroyed in the Oct. 2019 tornado. Their neighborhood includes other homes Bruce’s architecture firm Bernbaum-Magadini designed; some of those were damaged, too.

The tornado caused more than $38 million in damage that was mostly concentrated in Preston Hollow. The City’s request for FEMA aid was denied.

The Bernbaums’ experience rebuilding their home is similar to many Preston Hollow neighbors. Finalizing insurance settlements have been slow

DESIGN
LIVING BEAUTIFULLY IN PRESTON HOLLOW

and the pandemic is an additional hiccup in getting the work started.

The Bernbaums recently received their insurance settlement and are now starting construction on their property. The construction should be complete by April or May 2021.

Their new home will be a nod to midcentury modern.

“We developed a slightly bigger footprint for better entertaining and a covered terrace to take advantage of the outdoors,” Bruce says.

The new design includes a bedroom closet that doubles as a storm shelter.

The exterior will have two colors and sizes of brick, board-and-batten siding, and a standingseam metal roof. The interior will bring in one brick treatment for accent walls and includes a white oak floor, stain grade cabinets, various types of stone countertops and porcelain tile in bathrooms and utility room.

KIDS LUV TREES: A YEAR LATER

Large looming trees that shade Preston Hollow is why many people love the neighborhood; however, as everyone knows, the October tornado last year uprooted many of them. During the pandemic, Kids Luv Trees had to pause its fundraising and replanting efforts.

But that hasn’t stopped the group from trying to reach its goal.

“We haven’t done much, but we’ve raised just over $49,000,” neighbor Brian Smith said. Approximately half of the money acquired came from individual and business contributions primarily through a website, and funds generated by lemonade stands; the stands were paused during the pandemic.

In addition, Kids Luv Trees got a grant from the McFarland Foundation in Dallas for $25,000. It received another $2,000 from St. Monica’s Church’s Junior Catholic Daughters of America, which held a fundraiser, and the girls voted to give what they raised to Kids Luv Trees.

“That was really exciting,” Smith said. “We’re happy to say that other young ladies got that this was a worthy cause and they were willing to put their money they raised to help us.”

“I get to make a difference in the world with the help of my friends,” Smith’s 7-year-old daughter Brinley said.

Kids Luv Trees partnered with Texas Trees Foundation and RETREET to form the North Texas Tree Campaign to replant 3,500 trees in neighborhoods affected by the storm.

Kids Luv Trees’ portion of that goal is 500 trees. With the money it currently has, it can plant 165 depending on the size and type. That’s about 30 % of the goal right now.

It is planning to revamp lemonade stand enterprises in October - once following the latest CDC guidelines can be ensured - and start replanting trees on the anniversary of the tornado.

“We expect this will take a few years,” Smith said. “We’re optimistic that once we have a team event, it’ll generate a lot more interest and support.”

MEET THE HILLCREST SENIOR WHO COMPETED IN PROGRAMS AT HARVARD, JOHNS HOPKINS AND TEXAS INSTRUMENTS.

VIOLA, drill Senior Lieutenant, ballet, varsity tennis, swimming, National Honor Society, Girl Scouts and calculator applications captain — 17-year-old Paolaenid Rodney-Hernandez really does it all.

But her true love is science. The Hillcrest High School senior is completing her associates of science degree through a program offered by Hillcrest Collegiate Academy. She plans on pursuing neuroscience either as medical doctor or researcher.

“I want to do something with brains,”

Rodney-Hernandez says. “I know I want to help people, and one of my goals is to have neurosurgery be less invasive and

less painful so the patients can feel better.”

Rodney-Hernandez found her love for science when she joined science club in elementary school. One of the projects was dissecting owl pellets. Then in fifth grade, she dissected a squid.

“That was really interesting for me because I didn’t know squids have a feather inside of them that’s called a gladius,” she says. “That’s when I realized I really liked science.”

As a high school freshman, she spent nine days at Johns Hopkins. She learned

how to suture and received her CPR certification. During a tour of the University of Maryland at Baltimore, she saw a medical dummy that first-year medical students practice resuscitating and intubation. Twenty students from Hillcrest High were nominated for the program, but Rodney-Hernandez was the only one accepted in the highly-selective program

“I got to hold half of a human brain in my hand, which was also very, very cool,” she says. “I’m most proud of myself for when I got into the Congress and into the Hopkins. I like ‘wow, I’m part of like the big league.’ ”

As a sophomore, she was nominated by Hillcrest to be part of the three-day National Congress of Future Medical Physicians in Medical Sciences at Harvard.

“My favorite part of that program was where I got to witness a partial knee replacement live on a big screen. That was really fun,” Rodney-Hernandez says.

She says her mother, Dr. Rosenid

Hernández-Badia, a librarian at Benjamin Franklin International Exploratory Academy and a former professor of biology, encouraged her two daughters to explore STEM coursework.

“We would be like, ‘Mom, we want to do a science experiment. Can we use these things?’ ” Rodney-Hernandez says.

“I really look up to my mom, especially with her biology background,” she says. “She’s one of the reasons I really like science, because I grew up loving and learning about science, like ever since I was a baby.”

Even Rodney-Hernandez’s favorite shows have medical themes. She just recently finished watching Grey’s Anatomy, The Night Shift and Criminal Minds.

This past summer, Rodney-Hernandez virtually interned at Texas Instruments, where she learned about different job types and professional skills to prep for college.

UT Austin, the University of Dallas, Baylor and Austin College are on her college applications short list; she’s looking for a school

that offers a great neuroscience program, accepts her dual credit classes from Hillcrest and provides enough scholarship help.

“I’m really thankful for all the teachers who nominated me, because without them, I wouldn’t have been able to go to all those places and have those amazing opportunities,” she says “That are some of my favorite high school experiences that I’ll take with me forever.”

DID YOU KNOW?

“My mom’s a scuba instructor, and my family and I scuba dive. I want to scuba dive with the giant manta rays that only are in Indonesian waters. Like they’re like bigger than a human.”

Wherever you find yourself on the spectrum of politics, religion or life stage, these questions face all of us.

What can I do? What can I do about the injustice I am more awakened to each day? What can I do to learn and grow so I can be a better neighbor and friend? What is my role in the conversation of race?

These are difficult, tough and uncomfortable questions. No matter where you find yourself on the spectrum of politics, religion or your particular life stage, these questions face all of us.

If you are having a difficult time answering these questions on your own, you are not alone. Anyone who has tried to order a copy of “White Fragility,” “Me and White Supremacy,” “The Color of Law,” or any other book on race, knows many were out of print and back-ordered for months. Our country’s relationship with race has been messy at best. At worst, our relationship has been blood-soaked, terrorizing and traumatizing.

Though I believe there is a way forward together. I am on the board of Project Unity in Dallas. Project Unity was created by my dear friend, the Rev. Richie Butler in the wake of the police shootings that took place in July 2016. Project Unity was launched to bring people of different upbringings, backgrounds and races together for intentional conversations about race while sharing a meal. Together We Dine events have taken place throughout Dallas since 2016 as thousands of people have learned that conversations on race can be

difficult and yet life-giving and powerful. Last week, Project Unity held a press conference to announce a new Together We Can initiative. Together We Can provides individuals, corporations and groups the tools to educate, enable and empower a lifestyle of mindfulness and action against racism. Find ways to be involved and committed to this initiative at https://www.togetherwecan.one.

Mother Theresa diagnosed all the world’s problems this way: “We have simply forgotten that we belong to one another.” Friends, we need to remember that we belong to one another; we are not just neighbors; we are not just Dallasites; we belong to one another, in mind, body and spirit. The invitation is for us to renew our mindfulness to this reality and create a lifestyle of belonging in our great city as we all take action against racism.

Yes, this journey will be messy. Yes, there will be bumps along the way that may be uncomfortable. But I believe it will be holy, for this journey will return us to one another.

With great hope, Matthew
