The Crime: Burglary of a motor vehicle

Date: Thursday, Aug. 1

Time: Between 10 a.m. and noon

Location: 7400 West Northwest Highway

Bowen Florsheim was attending a funeral for a fellow Mason who had recently passed away. It was a somber occasion, and several Masons attended to honor their comrade. Florsheim had been charged with bringing Mason some regalia for the occasion and had left his car unlocked so others could help unload.

As the funeral got underway, Florsheim’s car unfortunately was still unlocked. But who would be despicable enough to take advantage of a funeral to commit a crime?

Sadly, somber occasions like this don’t always deter criminals. Someone entered his car and made off with a GPS, a pistol and nine bucks.

While Florsheim was a bit annoyed, he wasn’t surprised.

“It’s easy taking when you think about it. There are a lot of cars around and no one watching them,” he says. “If you’re going to steal, are you really going to care where you do it? It takes a low-life to do this at a funeral, but if you’re a thief, you’re a low-life anyway.”

Dallas Police Lt. Richard Dwyer of the North Central Patrol Division says this does happen occasionally, and citizens should always be vigilant about protecting their property — no matter where they are.

“When a person attends a funeral or other gravesite service, they are usually preoccupied with their personal thoughts and not aware of cars coming or going. In addition, they may have not been able to park their car nearby,” he says. “Remember ‘Lock, Take, Hide.’ ” numbers
