IS ENOUGH ENOUGH?

Let the man in the mirror answer that question

Quite a few years ago, a couple of us were talking with our pastor about how our church was going to fund the coming year.

It was a small church, membership was stagnant, dollars were hard to come by, and the two of us had been tapped to devise a plan to squeeze more blood from the same turnips, so to speak.

As these things tend to go at a church, the discussion turned to the “tithe” and whether talking about donating a specific percentage of members’ income was realistic, given our daily living expenses and the responsibilities we have to ourselves and to our families, much less to something or someone else.

The “how much” part was pretty clear, since 10 percent is the generally

referred-to magic number. But the “how much is enough” question was harder to answer.

And then the other guy threw the pastor a curve.

“Do I calculate my tithe before or after taxes?” he asked the pastor. “And which taxes count?”

He had a point: There are property taxes and sales taxes and gasoline

better parent or spouse.

We’re expected to break new ground in a new year, so it seems, and we generally give it a game effort for a week or two or three.

And then those eternal questions arise again: How much is enough? How much do I really need to do differently, and what difference will it really make?

Why can’t I just eat what I want? Do I really need that much exercise? Does my boss deserve my best effort? Can I be a better parent or spouse?

taxes and all kinds of other taxes, and surely we should get a “discount” for some of these taxes as part of the tithe equation.

And as it turns out, “how much is enough” is a question that never goes away, particularly this time of year.

Every January, most of us at least toss a glance in the direction of doing something different with our lives. Maybe it’s eating less or eating better. Maybe it’s exercising. Maybe it’s putting in more effort at work or trying to be a

If only there was a concrete answer to those questions, so you and I and everyone else could just get on with the business of doing what we need to do to live our lives correctly.

As it turns out, thinking back to how the pastor answered the guy’s tax-andtithe question that day, there is at least one take-it-to-the-bank answer.

“Well,” the pastor told us, clearing his throat and leaning forward ever so slightly.

“When you’re trying to figure out how much is enough,” he said, “look in a mirror, smile widely, and ask yourself what you need to do to keep looking that way all year long.”

MEJA BLUE 99 SOCCER TEAM’S FUNDRAISER FOR BREAST CANCER RESEARCH

In an effort to raise money for breast cancer research, the 11-year old girls on the MEJA Blue 99 soccer team challenged neighbors to pay $1 for every goal they scored in October. The team of 16 managed to score eight goals, earning $1,107, which they donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

BLISS RAWCAFÉ OPENATPRESTON CENTER

Bliss Raw Café is open at Preston Center, about half a block west of Einstein Bagels, right off Brookshire. Maria Whitworth, who handles marketing for the restaurant, tells me the concept will stay the same: It’ll be all about superfoods and elixirs. Blackboard specials will also be offered monthly. And much like the Greenville location, it’ll be a small space just 700 square feet with room for about 30.

Congrats, Bliss! I look forward to visiting your new location. Keep up the good work — love, love, love the food!

“everyone loves a cupcake.” It’s a simple truth, tressa Leboeuf says, and it may be why her business, citizen Sweet, is booming. Leboeuf launched a cupcake delivery business earlier this year, and already her growing customer-base runs the gamut. “If you’re in the corporate world, this is a great gift to send a client because we can even customize the box with a company’s colors or logo. or, if you’re a working mom who doesn’t have time to bake cupcakes and drop them off at your child’s school, we can deliver them for you with a card that says ‘love mom’.” Aside from cupcakes, customers can order muffins, twists and cookies. All of those are baked fresh daily with organic ingredients. “I’m a foodie at heart, so it was really important to me that we made real food, no preservatives, trans fat, or anything artificial.” In fact, Leboeuf explains that her top-selling cupcake is the black velvet, “not to be confused with red velvet, because there’s no red dye no. 4 in it.”

FiNd CitizeN Sweet oNLiNe At CitizeNSweet.Com. Most deliveries can be made the same day, though it’s preferred to place orders a day in advance. orders range from $4 to $27, and delivery ranges from $10 to $15 depending on distance. A guide through the mAze of city-rel Ated questions ?

how can i request a bus stop closer to my house? What if i ’m not A ble to m A ke the walk at all?

it’s easier than you might think to get a bus to come closer to you, as opposed to you walking block after block just to get to the nearest bus stop. the entire process may only take a matter of weeks, so it might be to your benefit to inquire about a new bus stop closer to your home. here’s how it works:

1. first, contact dArt you will need to complete a request form, which will ask for information such as where you would like the bus stop to be, and why it would be beneficial to have a bus stop at that particular location. if the new location is within a pre-existing bus route, then the process will be a lot easier and less time-intensive. if the location is outside the boundaries of dArt bus routes, your request will go to city councilmen, who ultimately will decide the outcome.

2. After receiving the request, dArt begins investigating the new location. its surveyors look at factors such as the number of riders in and around your neighborhood that the new bus stop would benefit. they also will be looking for potential reasons why a bus stop wasn’t in that location to begin with (such as a history of vandalism, damage, etc.). the surveyors will then come up with an assessment of why the neighborhood doesn’t have

service, and present those findings to city council. it will then take 10–15 business days for the city to determine whether or not to add the bus stop.

3. senior citizens and people with disabilities are able to avoid all the hassle and take advantage of dArt ’s paratransit program. the paratransit buses are wheelchair accessible, and offer curbside service to anyone who can’t easily make it to the nearest bus stop. it’s not a service for the lazy, however; paratransit riders must submit the necessary forms (available on dArt ’s website) and provide a doctor’s assessment. Anyone approved simply needs to provide a schedule of when and where he will need picked up at on specific days and hours.

for more information about this or any other transit issue, contact dArt at 214.749.3333 or visit dart.org. —ASHA

We are in mourning as we celebrate the Advocate annual Cheap Wine extravaganza and $10 Wine Osborne Solaz, the Spanish red blend that has stay of the Hall since its inception, is being fazed porate term is “selectively distributed in stores throughout U.S.,” but the reality is that the wine won’t be for stores where you used to buy it. (Osborne is replacing the Solaz with a brand called TempraTantrum; hopefully, it tastes better than the name.)

Otherwise, despite the weak dollar, 2009 was a banner year for cheap wine. The only other wines to drop out did so because the weak dollar pushed their prices above $10 — Falesco Vitiano, which produces a solid rosé, an even more solid white blend and a stunning red blend made of sangiovese, cabernet and merlot.

The Hall added five wines: A California chenin blanc from Vinum Cellars called CNW; Notorius, a white wine from Sicily; a red Rhone wine, La Ferme de Gicon; and vini merlot from Bulgaria, which may be the best cheap merlot I’ve ever tasted. Also, look for the 2007 Bota Box cabernet sauvingon, which at $5 a bottle, is a steal. I can’t, however, recommend any newer vintages.

Here’s the rest of this year’s Hall of Fame: and especially the petite sirah. the Spanish sparkling wine, which comes in brut (dry), extra dry (sweeter than brut) and rosé.

WITH YOUR WINE

New Year’s black-eyed peas

Eating black-eyed peas for New Year’s is a Southern tradition that is supposed to bring good luck. But you don’t have to settle for canned beans. Put this on the stove to simmer after lunch, check on it periodically, and you’ll have dinner without much effort. Serve this with your favorite $10 wine.

Serves 4, takes about 2.5 hours

1 lb dried black-eyed peas

1 onion, chopped

1 carrot, chopped

1 celery stalk, chopped

1/2 bell pepper, chopped

2 cloves garlic, chopped

1 jalapeño, chopped

2 bay leaves

Salt and pepper to taste

Optional: Ham hock, pork neck bones or turkey neck bones

1. Combine all ingredients in a large pot. Add water to cover the beans by an inch or so.

2. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to simmer, cover, and cook until beans are tender. This could take as little as an hour or as long as three or four hours, depending on the beans. You may also need to add water if the beans look dry.

ask the WINE GUY?

Q. WHAT IS THE AVERAGE PRICE OF A BOTTLE OF WINE?

A. A lot less than you think — about $6, according to Nielsen, which tracks U.S. retail wine sales. Most of the wine sold in the U.S. costs less than $10.

THE MEDIA PERPETUALLY FEEDS THE PUBLIC’S HUNGER FOR LISTS.

There are useful lists, such as Oprah’s “Top 10 Superfoods”, Time ’s “25 People to Blame for America’s Credit Crisis”, or Esquire ’s “Best Bars in America”. Then there are more gratuitous tabulations — Star magazine’s “Best and Worst Beach Bodies”, or The Enquirer ’s index of gay and not gay celebrities, for instance.

Maybe it’s the order and brevity lists inject into our overwhelming lives, or that they make large quantities of information more digestible. Whatever the reason, the masses enjoy consuming info in the form of neat numbered and bulleted boxes, and the Advocate is here to oblige. In fact, we love lists so much that we’ve compiled a list of lists (sometimes useful, sometimes superfluous) for readers who can’t get enough of them.

C RISIS O f TEN TURNS OUR GOD PONDERINGS INTO PRAYER

There is no more familiar or beloved Psalm than “The Shepherd’s Psalm”, the twentythird. Attributed to King David, it speaks of God as “my shepherd”, and provides a portrait of a close and loving relationship between the human and the divine.

In almost 37 years of ministry, I suppose I have read it at 90 percent of the funerals and memorial services I have done. And although I usually use one of the modern biblical translations, somehow I cannot read this Psalm in anything but the old King James. I cannot count the times when I have been at the bedside of a sick friend who seems unconscious, but with the first phrase of the Psalm the lips move with me, drawing upon something deep within: “The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.”

It wasn’t until many years into the ministry, however, that I noticed a subtle but profound truth in the twenty-third Psalm. It starts out in the third person: “The Lord is my Shepherd,” then it goes on to speak of what God does: “He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; he leadeth me beside the still waters ...” Third person talk about God is theology — the study of God. Much of our talk about God falls into this category. We ask questions about God — is there a God? Is God a God of love? Why does God allow suffering? What does God think about the state of human society? Whenever we ask such questions, we are theologians.

But then something happens, in the midst of the Psalm. After green pastures and still waters, the Shepherd leads us “through the valley of the shadow of death.” I am impressed by the way the Bible tells the truth. The Psalms, especially, are honest about life and about us. While it would be comforting to restrict the Psalm to the serene and the beautiful, it would not be realistic, for we know all too well that there is more to life than still waters and green pastures. We know that there are also the valleys, the shadows, and the looming specter of death.

But it is right there, in the valley, that

something profound happens. The Psalmist’s voice changes from third person to second person: “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, thou art with me.” Now the Psalmist is speaking, not about God, but with God. Here the Psalm becomes not theology, but conversation. The rest of the Psalm is a prayer!

That’s the way life is, isn’t it? It’s usually in the valley that prayer is born. Until the

hard times, we may speak about God, but in the dark, God becomes personal, and for the first time we hear ourselves saying “Thou”. I’ve heard many people express guilt that they never spoke much with God until some crisis came but that’s the way life is. Prayer becomes most real, most relevant, in the dark.

It’s a good reminder as we face another year. May you be led to plenty of still water, and enjoy the green pastures. But if the year leads you through any dark places, may you find there the intimacy of a conversation with God.

THE MAN POINTED THE GUN RIGHT AT HER HEAD.

It has been an exciting year for Anne Marsh, and her family. Her daughter was expecting to have a baby on Thanksgiving, the first grandchild for Marsh and her husband, Fred.

The Victim: Anne Marsh

The Crime: Aggravated robbery

Date: Friday, Nov. 13

Time: 4:30 p.m.

Location: 9100 block of Clearlake

A couple weeks before the big day, Marsh was returning to her home from work. She wheeled down the alley and was talking on her cell phone with her daughter, just like any average day. Marsh turned into the driveway of her home, and talked a couple more minutes. As she spoke, a young man approached her on the driver’s side of her car.

“He had a gun pointed right at my head, and he screamed, ‘Get out of the car’,” she says. “I screamed at my daughter to call 911.”

Marsh exited the car and began screaming.

“It was scary,” she says. “I was thinking, ‘God, I’m not going to see my grandchild born.’ I felt extremely violated.”

The robber grabbed her purse and fled. Police told Marsh that the criminal may have been looking for the perfect opportunity and saw that she was distracted in her driveway talking on the phone. The purse had only about $5 in it, but she did lose her license and had to cancel her credit cards.

Police made a composite sketch of the robber in hopes of capturing the man.

“This is really unusual for our neighborhood,” Marsh says. “I told the police I wouldn’t forget his face.”

Dallas Police Lt. Barry Payne of the North Central Patrol Division says it’s important for neighbors to be aware of their surroundings and any unusual people.

“Unless an individual is being specifically targeted, these are crimes of opportunity, and someone hanging around an area is going to rob whoever drives up, rather than hiding in wait for someone to come home,” he says.

Leaving her phone line open was a good idea, Payne says.

“If someone is talking on the phone when getting robbed, they should keep the line open and let the person on the other end of the line hear what is going on so they can be a witness, if only by hearing what is happening,” Payne says. “The best general advice is to comply with the suspect’s orders, especially if he or she has a gun pointed at you.”

However, Payne cautions, “understand that there is no ‘safe way’ to react to an armed suspect.” SEAN CHAFFIN
