A ch A nce encounter

Digital news can’t compete with the surprises newsprint offers

It’s cold and wet and windy outside, and brownish-red leaves whip through the yard. Can I complete the dash without becoming soaked as rain pounds our driveway, bouncing up on the porch?

It’s probably only 60 feet, the distance from our front door to the sidewalk, but this early in the morning, with the darkened sky strangling the light, there might as well be a mile between me and the three rolled-up newspapers on the lawn.

I’m waiting, knowing full well that everything in the Dallas Morning News, the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times can be found online, but I still like to feel paper between my fingers as I sift through yesterday’s news looking for things that still have meaning today.

Today, I’m virtually a loner on this trip — the neighbors’ lawns are mostly empty. In fact, given our headlong flight to electronic information, I’m almost embarrassed to be seen with newsprint.

Years ago, if something big happened, we might have been teased with information on television or radio, but we would have waited for the newspaper to make sense of it all. We may have had opinions, but we couldn’t do much with them — sure, we might have wanted to remind Donald Trump he’s an idiot or tell Lindsay Lohan to quit screwing up her life, but by the time we hand-wrote our thoughts and found a postage stamp, the energy driving the hate was pretty much gone.

We don’t have that problem anymore, because in seconds I can join the many thousands on Lohan’s Twitter account or Trump’s Facebook page letting them know exactly how disgusted we are with their antics. No matter if tomorrow I’m not so hot under the collar and maybe even wish I’d

held my digital tongue; there will be something else fueling my anger by then.

Social networks and the internet are doing a lot of great things in our neighborhoods these days, as you’ll learn from our cover story this month. Neighbors are finding each other, cops are tracking criminals, pets are being found, stores are selling stuff; while waiting for our monthly magazine, you can even find daily news updates for our neighborhood at advocatemag.com or on our Facebook page or Twitter feed.

The internet makes all things accessible instantaneously, so there’s no wait to have questions answered or information found, as long as you know exactly what you’re looking to find.

But for me, a newspaper on newsprint still offers something more — the opportunity to stumble across something I didn’t know I needed to know. Like the story I read the other day about the death by brain

damage of a 28-year-old Minnesota hockey player, or the story about why Army wound up beating Navy for the 1944 college football championship. These stories are on tablets or smartphones, too, but they’re harder to find because we have no reason to look for them.

I could survive without that random knowledge. But the information itself, stumbled across as I randomly flipped newspaper pages, offers something to ponder, to the extent pondering something is possible anymore.

Anyway, the rain finally has slowed to a drizzle, so I’m going to scurry down the steps, across the lawn and out to the street where the newspapers lay coiled in plastic.

I’ll enjoy them as long as I can, because like all of us, their time will end. Sooner, it appears, rather than later.

Remember when: Advocate Radio archives

There was a time when Advocate Magazine was just Advocate magazine, but over the last few years, we’ve evolved into Advocate Media, comprising blogs, podcasts, videos, Facebook, Foursquare, Twitter and email newsletters. Some of the aforementioned items concerned us, and in fact, Advocate editors had trouble becoming accustomed to using social media in our daily routine.

yesteryear, in that, if you want to learn something about a business, you go almost immediately to Facebook, so we needed to have a presence there for that reason alone.

CT: And it’s free.

CHB: And pretty easy to use.

Below are excerpts from a 2009 podcast featuring our first web director, Kris Scott — the voices belong to her, editors Christina Hughes Babb, Rachel Stone and Marlena Chavira-Medford, and photo editor Can “Turk” Turkyilmaz. We admit: The audio on this thing is truly awful. And we introduced the podcast with a song. It’s supposed to be funny, but we have a weird sense of humor. We had fun with the podcasts in those days, because we were pretty sure that that none of you listened.

CHB: Today’s topic is Advocate in the age of social media … I guess. I actually just made that up … Kris Scott has been leading the Advocate’s social media effort, so I’ll start by asking her, “Why are you making us do this?”

KS: I read recently that people are spending half their time on Facebook and, less so, Twitter than on destination websites, such as Advocatemag.com. So those who were once going to our website might be spending that time on Facebook now. I kind of think of Facebook as the Yellow Pages of

Q&A: Roger Staubach

Sports fans can rattle off Roger Staubach statistics like a lifelong phone number. Cowboys’ fans, like breathing. To Staubach, however, life is defined by more than total passing yards or trips to the Super Bowl. The same Hall-of-Fame arm that stretched upwards — beseeching the heavens — after releasing the infamous Hail Mary, now wraps around his wife of 46 years. There is another side to Roger the Dodger. It’s funny. It’s wise. It’s grounded and humble. And while it’s no less impressive, it does have to do the dishes after dinner. We sat down with the Preston Hollow resident to get to know this side a little better.

What is your least favorite household chore?

I do the dishes after diner. I’m neat. I put things away. But I don’t like to cut the grass or work in the lawn. I told Marianne, ‘The food will go before the yard guy.’

What do your grandchildren call you?

Papa. I said, ‘No grandfather. Don’t call me granddad or grandfather.’ But Papa is fine.

What is the secret to a happy, lasting marriage?

You’ve got to stay faithful. If you get married, it’s a commitment. Don’t try and compromise your commitment to each

other. Trust is really as important as anything else in a marriage.

When did you and Marianne meet?

We met in the fourth grade. Although, I didn’t like girls until the eighth grade. We dated off and on in high school. We got engaged right after we graduated [college], and were married two months later. I was in the Navy, and it was hard to plan a wedding.

The end result is all that matters, right? [laughs] I mean, I think we’d both do it again.

6 prestonhollow.advocatemag.com JANUARY 2012
Benjamin Hager

Where do you get your news?

I read Fortune, Business Week and Forbes Then Sports Illustrated, the Wall Street Journal and the Dallas Morning News. I read all of that religiously.

Where do you keep your Heisman Trophy?

Right now, it’s in my home office. We moved into a new home, and my wife did a great job decorating my office. There’s a nice place in there for the Heisman trophy. We used to have it on our fireplace in the first house we were in. The kids used to get on like a hobbyhorse.

Do you have a favorite vacation spot?

We have a home down in Horseshoe Bay near Marble Falls. We have a place on the lake there. That’s our favorite.

Do you have any New Years resolutions?

Thank you for your business!

I’m not a New Year’s resolution person. I work out all the time anyway. I have a whole workout room at home now, but I used to go over to Dr. Cooper aerobics center all the time. In January, the place is packed. Then, all of a sudden, it gets back to normal.

Lori Sparks

What do you always make sure is on the grocery list?

Please proofread carefully: pay attention to spelling, grammar, phone numbers and design. Color proofs: because of the difference in equipment and conditions between the color proofing and the pressroom operations, a reasonable variation in color between color proofs and the completed job shall constitute an acceptable delivery.

I’m a big chocolate milk guy. It’s good to drink after you work out. Of course, ice cream is always on there.

How much fun did you have intimidating boys that were trying to date your daughters?

I’d have a good time with them. Most of them liked sports, so I’d take them out and play a little basketball in the side yard or something. We really didn’t have any bad boyfriend experiences. But you always worry about your daughters.

Did you always know you wanted a big family?

We didn’t really have a game plan. We had three children in four years, our first four years of marriage. I was in Vietnam or else we would’ve had four children in four years.

What is the best part about being a grandparent?

The best part is seeing another human being in your life that you love, and they love you. They are part of the family tree. They are a lot of fun. The best part is enjoying

plantation shutters, and gorgeous refurbished pool with water features!

I’ve been pretty positive about the Cowboys. They’re not out of it by any means. I think they are going to be in the playoffs and, if you get in the playoffs, anything can happen. But it’s going to be hard to beat Green Bay ...

How do you think your wife would describe you?

She would describe me as someone who would need to spend more time relaxing.

Who would be the guests at your dream dinner party?

From a military standpoint, I’ve always admired McArthur. And I guess I’d like to have Babe Ruth there. I’ve always admired Ronald Reagan. Of course, everyone wants to have Jesus at their party. (laughs) You’ve got to remember Jesus. And I threw the Hail Mary pass, so I’d want the Blessed Virgin there too. I think she really likes me because of that. Of course, I’d want my wife at the dinner. And all my kids. And grandkids.

writer in residence

Kip Petroff

For more than a decade, Preston Hollow resident and lawyer Kip Petroff fought against a seemingly unbeatable Goliath — the corporate giant responsible for distributing the dangerous weight-loss drug Fen-Phen. “This is a classic example of the Food and Drug Administration being bamboozled by the drug companies,” Petroff says. In his sworn deposition testimony, retired FDA medical officer Dr. Leo Lutwak stated, “… the only way anything can be done to prevent this from happening again is by exposing it.” That’s why Petroff wrote the book, “Battling Goliath: Inside a $22 Billion Legal Scandal,” chronicling his experience with the case that resulted in a nationwide settlement. Petroff offers an inside look at how Fen-Phen made it to the market and the corruption that ensued as its maker, Wyeth, worked to cover up the drug’s lethal side effects. The book reaches an audience far beyond the legal community, Petroff says. “Fifty-two percent of people in America take prescription drugs. Six million people took Fen-Phen. And the rate of injury is increasing. It’s astonishing how many people are taking prescription drugs to counteract the side effects from another prescription drug. People need to be careful about what they’re taking.” Petroff also examines the toll that the Fen-Phen case took on his personal life. Wyeth threatened to sue him for racketeering, which could have ruined him. “Hardball became very hardball,” he says. Amid the stress, Petroff descended into alcoholism. In 2007, he decided to quit drinking. The very same day, the Fen-Phen case was settled. “I believe if you read the book, you’ll find that the Goliath I was fighting might not be the Goliath you would expect.” —Emily Toman

cheap thrills

Pacific Rim Dry Riesling ($10) Washington

The world of cheap wine is in flux as we celebrate the Advocate’s 10th annual Cheap Wine extravaganza and $10 Wine Hall of Fame. Cheap wine is more popular than ever, but the wine industry — and especially the wine writing part of it — seems to resent cheap wine more than ever. Their reasons aren’t quite clear, but chalk up much of the backlash to the fact they’re tired of cheap wine, and want to get back to making and writing about the expensive stuff. We can be a bit snobbish, no?

Nevertheless, the 2012 Hall of Fame added seven wines, and dropped only four: Anne Aimee Muller-Thurgau and the Vinum Cellars chenin blanc and white blend, which are scarce around here, and the Toad Hollow Pinot Noir Rose. It’s especially sad to drop the Toad Hollow, which has been a fixture since the Hall started. But the current vintage, for whatever reason, is more white zinfandel than rosé, and it doesn’t meet the Hall’s standards. The seven new wines are Pacific Rim Dry Riesling, a sweet as been in and out of the Hall several times; Dry Blanc, a stellar sauvignon blanc from California; Riviere, a French red; La Fiera Montepulciano classic Italian red; the Santa Julia + Torrontes, e white; and the Segura Viudas brut and rosé ne from Spain.

rest of this year’s Hall of Fame: a white wine from Sicily, which represents dozen Sicilian wines that I have enjoyed over r years. Literally. I have not had a bad Sicilian our years, and most of them have been $10 Hall

s from California’s Bogle Vine, and especially the old vine zinfandel. the Spanish sparkling wine, which es in brut (dry), extra dry (sweeter than brut) rosé.

the new front porch? The rise of social networking and virtual connections is changing things around here

Facebook is no longer just a silly tool for tracking down old flames or notifying the world that you are enjoying a fine sandwich. Along with other forms of digital interaction, organizations use Facebook to mobilize meetings and movements, reunite lost pets with owners, alert residents to prowlers and track down wanted criminals, to name a few. Social media can forge relationships, improve efficiency, boost business and promote safety within communities. Of course, like any technology, it comes with a few pitfalls, and not everyone is on board.

SEARCH: forest lane (all lower case)

Forty years ago, teenagers in Preston Hollow passed the time cruising down Forest Lane. With Led Zeppelin tunes blaring out the windows of their Cameros, they headed east from Marsh, made a U-turn at The Hockaday School and zipped back west. They did this again and again for two to three hours a night.

“That was our social network. We didn’t have texting or the internet,” says Stefanie Brown, who lived in the neighborhood but attended school in Carrollton.

The ritual began in the late 1960s and ended in the 1990s, she says, when police began cracking down on that type of behavior.

About two years ago, on a whim, Brown created a Facebook group titled “forest lane” where cruisers could reminisce.

“It started as a joke, and within two

weeks, I had 600 followers. I thought, ‘Wow, I guess I’ll keep it up.’ ”

Today, the group has 1,462 fans and counting, and it’s just one of several pages dedicated to the Forest Lane cruisers.

Facebook users start conversations about what music they listened to back then, which restaurants they frequented, senior pranks and whatever happened to their vintage rides. Some followers post detailed descriptions of what the area looked like 20 and 30 years ago.

Discussions kept coming back to the Forest Lane mural, painted in 1976 by W.T. White seniors. The long, colorful image extending from Midway to Rosser has become a neighborhood landmark, although it has been altered over the years.

“I was about 6 or 7 at the time it was painted,” Brown says. “All I saw were people out there painting a wall. I didn’t know the details or the people.”

launched an effort in June to restore the mural to its original state. Brown created a separate Facebook page, “Repainting the Forest Lane Wall,” to help locate old photographs and original painters. There, she found Mary Alsobrook, an original artist from that 1976 senior class who now lives in Houston.

“When I heard they wanted to repaint the wall, it brought tears to my eyes,” Alsobrook says.

She began digging through her mementos and posting to the Facebook page, locating nearly all the original images from the mural. The page has become the central hub for the restoration project, which is currently in limbo until an agreement is reached with the Glen Meadows Homeowners’ Association, which owns the wall.

Separated in age by more than a decade, Brown and Alsobrook had never met before finding each other on Facebook.

facebook.com SEARCH: NDECPTA

For a neighborhood group of 30-somethings, having a Facebook page is almost mandatory, says Brooke Green, president of the North Dallas Early Childhood PTA, a club for young mothers with children up to 5 years old.

“We have to have a presence on Facebook because it’s expected,” Green says. “It gives us legitimacy in 21st century Dallas. It’s pretty much the norm. Everyone has an iPhone. Moms probably check Facebook more than they’re willing to admit.”

NDECPTA includes about 180 members. The Facebook page has 106 followers who have become part of the Facebook generation where friends chat over a virtual news feed instead of a dining room table. But it’s not just a way for the group to promote itself — it promotes interac-

tion among its members.

“Last year, we saw a big upswing in the amount of casual conversation,” Green says.

Discussion threads include “Where are the best pumpkin patches this year?” and “Does anyone know of any open gym hours nearby?”

The Facebook page also is a place where moms can continue conversations that started during one of the monthly programs. For example, parents can try out a nutritional tip they received and post about how it did or didn’t work.

Brooke Green, president of the North Dallas Early Childhood PTA

NDECPTA launched its Facebook page about three years ago, about the same time that the “25 Things About Me” trend circulated with users posting random facts about themselves. It turned out to be a good icebreaker, especially for members who don’t always speak up at meetings.

“It helps the perception that we’re not cliquey. The group is open to anyone.”

However, Green says Facebook isn’t a replacement for good old-fashioned talking to one another — in person.

“It only enhances those face-to-face meetings. You can be on Facebook 24/7, but we encourage people to get off the computer. You have to have face time as a new mom, or life is really lonely.”

iBusiness

The arm of social media has even reached neighborhood businesses, which have adopted Facebook and Twitter as a key form of advertising.

North Haven Gardens started using the tools about two years ago to attract younger gardeners.

“You think of it as a Gen X and younger,” says marketing manager Nikki Rosen, who manages North Haven’s social media.

“I couldn’t say it’s just one age group. I think it’s everybody. It’s across the board.”

The Facebook page has become a place where customers can enter contests, browse inventory and receive gardening advice without walking into the store.

For example, someone posted a picture of a peculiar leaf in his backyard, asking if it was poisonous. North Haven quickly replied, “No, it’s just Virginia Creeper.”

“We’re pretty savvy about that,” Rosen says. “We don’t want a customer doing something wrong because we took two days to get back with them.”

Rosen often walks through the garden center with a digital camera, taking photos of eye-catching plants for a virtual tour on Facebook. It once boosted sales for the sweet olive tree.

“People can see what we have without coming in. We usually get quite a few hits on those.”

However, Rosen says, social media doesn’t keep people from visiting the store altogether. If anything, the regu-

But keeping up with the ever-evolving world of social media isn’t easy, she says, especially for small businesses.

No more waiting until the quarterly crime watch meeting for the latest stats on our neighborhood. The North Central and Northwest substations have embraced Facebook, posting real-time information about neighborhood crime.

“If we have a certain area where sexual assaults are going on, we can post the suspect’s description and that he’s targeting single females between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m., and we can put a warning out there,” says Sgt. Israel Herrera, head of the North Central neighborhood policing team.

In early November, police circulated a surveillance video of a man who robbed several Game Stop stores throughout the city, including the PrestonForest location. A Facebook user commented, “I saw that guy at tha lovers lane

Police have made no arrests in the case yet, but Herrera says that kind of information can only help an investigation, and he encourages more people to call 911 or use the iWatch smartphone application, which allows citizens to send anonymous text messages about suspicious activity.

The police have received at least 1,135 tips citywide through iWatch since January 2011. Last May, one of those tips led police to a marijuana grow house at 7400 Northaven — just a few yards from the Jewish Community Center — where officers seized several pounds of weed.

“It’s a way of getting involved without getting too involved,” Herrera says about both the iWatch and social media tools.

The Facebook page also serves as an alternative source of information for busy parents who can’t always make the 6 p.m. neighborhood meetings.

“I have three children, and they’re in bed by 9 p.m.,” Herrera says. “I don’t always have time to go to meetings. I’d imagine for some people, [Facebook] reaches that

avenue.

“The great thing about Facebook is that it’s written communication. So people can’t say ‘I thought I heard this’ or ‘I thought I heard that.’ I think with the younger generation, the face-to-face communication is starting to diminish.”

Dallas Police also use Twitter and Nixle to disseminate information, but have found that Facebook reaches the biggest audience. At least 7,826 people have “liked” the police department page where officers post not only crime updates but also traffic updates and photos from community presentations.

“It shows a positive interaction with adults and children in our area,” Herrera says.

Sparkman Club Estates resident Brooke Green remembers when police shared the video of the “Lively Lane Prowler,” a man who creepily peeped into homes and burglarized some around the Midway Hollow area in October. It created lots of buzz among her friends, and police caught the suspect a few weeks later. Green found out on Facebook.

“That really gave me peace of mind that he was caught,” she says.

In lIfe’s wake

Will those who follow us find smooth sailing or choppy waters?

I’ve always had a passion for sailing. In my youth I sailed Sunfish on the lakes of northeastern Pennsylvania and dinghies in Casco Bay, Maine, where my grandmother lived. I later chartered sloops, ketches and yawls on the Chesapeake and the Caribbean.

On the water, I could leave the daily grind behind; I could forget that I was a minister

values? Our passions? Our beliefs?

The writer Sam Keen, in his bestseller “To a Dancing God,” talks about his father, a Presbyterian minister. One day when he was a boy, he sat under a tree with his father and watched him carve on a peach seed. He watched as his father fashioned a monkey from that seed, and he remembered that as a child, he had an intense desire to have one of those carved monkeys. His dad told him that the one he had just finished was for his wife, the boy’s mother, but he said, “One day I will carve one for you, too.”

and pretend to be a salty sea dog.

Early in my sailing career, I noticed a sign that is commonly seen near marinas where boats are kept. It said, “You Are Responsible For Your Wake.”

What it meant was that you needed to slow down and minimize the waves you left behind — especially if you were piloting a powerboat up the narrow passages near the slips where boats where tied to their pilings. Too many waves, and you could do damage. The message was that, if you did damage to another vessel with your wake, you were legally responsible.

I began to think about the sign and its message. I thought to myself, isn’t that an important insight about life? We are responsible for our wake. We need to pay attention to what we leave behind us, and make sure that it doesn’t do damage.

As we round the beginning of another year (tempus fugit), it would be a good exercise to give some thought to our legacies to consider for a little while what we are leaving behind to those who come after us. What will they remember about us? Our

Years passed, and that promise faded into a distant memory. Sam Keen’s father was near death from emphysema, and they sat together under a juniper tree. Keen, knowing that his father’s days were short, said: “Dad, in all that was important you’ve never failed me. With one exception, you’ve kept the promises that you’ve made.” He said in jest, “You never got around to carving me a peach-seed monkey.”

Sam didn’t mean it seriously — he was joking with his dying father. However, not many days later, he received a package. It was a monkey carved from a peach seed and a note that said: “Here is the monkey I promised you. You will notice that I broke one leg and had to repair it with glue. Sorry I don’t have the time to carve a perfect one.”

Two weeks later his dad had gone to the Father’s house. “For me,” he writes, “a peach-seed monkey has become all of the promises which were made to me and the energy and cheer with which I was nourished, created and shaped as a human being by my parents.”

It makes me stop and wonder: what kind of legacy am I leaving? After all, I’m responsible for my wake.

The housekeeper sounded in ToxicaT ed.

Jim Thompson and his wife needed a new housekeeper. They lead busy lives and needed someone to help out.

He used a respected website where people who clean homes advertise for

The Victim: Jim Thompson

The Crime: Theft

Date: Thursday, Nov. 17

Time: Between 8 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Location: 5500 block of Winston

work, and interviewed potential workers. Thompson found a woman he thought trustworthy and then conducted a background check. Everything seemed OK, and she soon began working for Thompson.

A week and half later, things got a bit messy. Thompson’s wife came home when the housekeeper should have been there. Some drawers had been rifled through, and several pill bottles were missing, including vicodin and hydrocodone, as well

as $600 in cash. The housekeeper was not there and sounded intoxicated when reached on her cell phone. She admitted to taking the drugs, police report.

“She just kind of went wild,” Thompson says. “Some of the medicine was 12 years old. I guess she just went off the deep end.”

Thompson, who conducts interviews as part of his work running a financial services firm, did not expect something like this to happen, but understands there is always an element of risk when you employ someone to work in your home. He found the whole situation sad because she was arrested, and has small children and, apparently, a drug problem.
