Pet hall of fame

When I first met my wife, she wasn’t a “cat person.” She grew up in a family with dogs, and they were her “go to” pets.

When I grew up, we had a farm overflowing with animals — cats, a dog, cattle and chickens, along with the occasional horse and pig.

My wife’s dogs had the run of her house. They were part of the family, and she talks about the ones that were standouts — Big Dog, CB, Elvis — as she describes their escapades during the long small-town Texas summers.

Animals on our farm, though, were there for a purpose rather than entertainment. The cattle were there to provide food or breed, with their calves sold each year to help pay our bills. The chickens produced eggs to eat, the pigs typically wound up in our freezer, and we always kept one cow to provide our milk each day. The horses were my sisters’ youth agriculture projects, the cats lived in the barn and chased down mice and rats, and the dog was the intruder alarm system.

Anyway, when we married, my wife politicked constantly for a dog. But dogs need lots of attention, and since we both worked outside the home, that wasn’t possible. So I suggested instead that we get a cat, because they sleep most of the day anyway. And so we did.

Our first cat was friendly and loving, but it developed a serious problem that led to a week’s stay at an emergency vet facility. The cat recovered after a long and expensive stay, and when it came home, it loved us just the same.

But it hated — and I do mean hated — everyone else. Which was fine because we didn’t have a lot of visitors back then anyway.

Its eventual replacement has a place in my wife’s pet hall of fame: Spike trailed my wife throughout the house as first one son, and then another, was born and grew. It was common to see all four of them (my wife, two tiny sons and the cat) clambered together in a rocking chair, watching Winnie the Pooh at two in the morning when one son was sick and the other couldn’t sleep.

That cat wanted to be in the middle of everything; he was “Nana Kitty,” the self-appointed third parent. We rescued it from the SPCA primarily because when our almost 2-year-old saw the cat, he accidentally picked it up with an under-the-neck chokehold, and the cat just hung there like a rag doll, enjoying the attention.

Spike lived with us 13 years, until his little body finally gave out.

Now, as I write this column, our two cats (both rescued from local shelters, one after a car accident claimed its front left leg when it was 12 weeks old) are curled up next to my wife. They’re purring and occasionally stirring a bit just to make sure they’re not missing anything.

My wife is now a cat person. She claims she can look at the cats’ faces and tell what they’re thinking.

I look at their faces, and all I see are two round eyes staring back. I’m sure there’s something going on back there, but I choose not to worry about it.

If they’re hungry or thirsty, they let us know. And they’re no longer animals or even pets. Instead, they’re always hanging around with us, just like family.

Because that’s what they are.

Last month Preston Hollow Advocate editor Monica S. Nagy attended two neighborhood high school musicals — Hillcrest’s “Legally Blonde” and W.T. White’s “Holidays with Hermione.” Nagy declared that “American Idol needs to stop by W.T. White” and that the Hillcrest students’ “stellar performances resulted in the best high school theater production I’ve seen.”

Read portions of her reviews below, and find photos at prestonhollow.advocatemag.com.

‘Legally Blonde’

“Senior Madeleine Crenshaw played the part of Elle Woods. For Crenshaw’s first HHS musical, she dominated the stage, but also stepped back and let lead actors like Jacob Mock, Lilly Stafford, Malik Busari, Demarcus Targton, Sara Cagle, Alan Ortiz and countless other student stars draw cheers and shouts from the crowd. The musical was about an hour long, but was so well choreographed and directed that it shocked me when I learned the students have worked on it only since October and not for at least one year. Let me just add one more thing: the leading lady and man are boyfriend and girlfriend in real life. How precious is that?”

‘Holidays with Hermione’

“There’s no doubt that Preston Hollow is packed with talented youth, and each time I visit a local play or musical I begin to wonder where all this talent is coming from. Surely their moms must have pressed headphones blasting Mozart up to their stomachs when these prodigies were in the womb. More than 250 choir, dance and theater students tperformed classics like ‘Silent Night’ and ‘Blue Christmas.’ ”

Q&A: Mary Pat Higgins

Mary Pat Higgins worked as The Hockaday School’s chief financial officer for 22 years before recently accepting a position as president and CEO of the Dallas Holocaust Museum–Center for Education and Tolerance. We talk with Higgins about how she’ll use her experience to be an advocate for tolerance and educate the city’s youth when she officially becomes the museum’s leader Jan. 1.

What did you do as chief financial officer and associate head at Hockaday?

My functions were to oversee all the business operations, so everything non-academic like development, external affairs and admissions.

When did you become a board member at the museum?

Two years ago after I met Thomas Halsey, the board chairman at the time. Tom contacted me about going over some information about our endowments at Hockaday, and later asked if I would consider joining the board. It was a cause I was very interested in and passionate about advocating for education. Most importantly I want the schoolchildren that live in our neighborhood to know about the Holocaust so they won’t forget it. Something this museum hasn’t done much of is focus on more modern day examples of prejudice, but what drew me in was to really impact people in the Dallas community to stand up when they see something unjust happening.

Was it difficult for you to accept this position?

It’s been very invigorating and exciting. I’ve been at Hockaday for 22 years and I went to work there when I was 26 years old. They are sort of like my family. There are people at Hockaday that have worked there for almost 50 years, and it’s kind of hard to leave that.

Are you nervous about taking on more responsibility with your new role?

Yes, but I think it’s good to be a little afraid. To be impactful, the museum needs a bigger space. It really is critical for the museum to raise money to have a permanent home. I will have a lot of pressure to raise that money. My role as president will be to support the board. A lot of the nonprofits in the entertainment section are all struggling with the economy. The number of admissions at museum has decreased. It will really be a challenge. Hockaday is very established; it will be 100 years old next year. They have a very fixed and established business model. It’s scary to move to an organization with a much smaller staff and financial resources.

What are you looking to do with the space?

This is 5,000-square-foot rental space. The museum moved here in 2005, and the board leadership has been thinking about a bigger building for three or four years. The museum’s vision is not

to be huge, but to be a building that will add distinction to the city. Also to be large enough to have a couple classroom spaces so when teachers come down and bring their students, they have more time to help them really learn about what they saw. Can you talk more about the spatial issue?

The schematic design was done probably about five years ago and needs to be revisited — what space do we really need and how big it needs to be. That’s something I had a lot of experience with at Hockaday. We went through the complete architectural phase for a building called the Centennial Center. I worked with architects, contractors, the board and the faculty to develop plans for that building. Hockaday is on the cusp of starting that construction hopefully next year.

What is your favorite aspect of the museum?

Having the survivors come here and talk about their personal experiences. It makes it so real. What worries me is that they are aging — I mean it happened 70 years ago. I admire the speakers so much because they come down here multiple times a month and speak to teenagers. What is also admirable is I’ve heard three of them now tell their stories, but from positions of hope. I think so many of them were so grateful to have another chance at life. They have been so resilient. We need to figure out how to best convey their messages when they are gone.

How will you balance working here and not going home full of … ? Despair? Yes.

I think what will help is that the survivors are the most positive people and are not mired in the past. If I focus on the good we can do, then I think we can be OK. With my two boys, I’ve tried more than anything to teach them to be kind, good people [tearyeyed]. I think that is what really encourages me. Tolerance is almost really not enough. Somehow we have to change society where bullies don’t get to dominate the world. One of my biggest challenges is how to find the right path to have some exhibits about modern day acts of injustice and prejudice without detracting from our central mission.

When Joe Harberg was 11 years old, two things changed his life: “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory” opened in theaters, and the price of a chocolate bar doubled. Harberg collected all the change he had and bought every piece of chocolate his little fingers could afford. Decades later, he refers to himself as the “Chief Chocolateater.” Harberg has his own website, eatmorechocolate.com, where he chronicles his adventures eating confections from candy bars to cakes. “I’m an equal opportunity eater,” he says. “There’s no such thing as bad chocolate.” Since launching his website in 2001, Harberg has attracted more than 30,000 Facebook and Twitter followers. Harberg says while most Americans gravitate toward milk chocolate, he likes it all: dark, light and white. He says he’s eaten one or two chocolate bars from every manufacturer, and also had the opportunity to sit at the “big boys’ table” for the 2012 International Chocolate Awards in London. At the event, he sampled 150 chocolates from different parts of the world in just two days. (Though there were several categories for excellence, Pacari’s Ecuadorian lemongrass chocolate took the gold prize for best-flavored dark chocolate.) Harberg began expanding his global chocolate palate as he traveled the world on business with companies such as Current Energy and Power Brokers, where he had a hand in energy efficiency. Now Harberg relies on chocolate for his energy, with chocolate exploration being his full-time job. “I think I feel better, physiologically,” Harberg says. “It’s part of [chocolate’s] allure.” Harberg says he doesn’t know if he’ll ever complete his quest to ”find the perfect thing because the perfect thing is being made every day.” Harberg is in negotiations with several production companies to roll out an “Eat More Chocolate TV” show by fall 2013. “It’s a $20-billion-a-year industry,” he says. “We consume half as much as Europeans, so I say eat more chocolate — in moderation.”

Amonth ago, Soleo had neither solidified hours of operation nor a fleshed-out menu. What started as the Velasquez family selling tacos out of a food truck grew to a small chain of 10 taquerias throughout Dallas named El Paisa. Now their eldest daughter, Lupe Velasquez, and her husband, Michael, are bringing their authentic Mexican cuisine to Preston Hollow, with the restaurant’s “hard opening” set for the second week of January. Manager Maricela Camarena says they realized most Americans’ tastes might not be suited for Mexican delicacy dishes such as tongue tacos, so they instead offer menu items such as sunrise enchiladas and torrejas, more commonly known as French toast. Brunch is available 11 a.m. 2:30 p.m. on the weekends. Soleo orders fresh eggs daily, and makes its own chorizo and corn masa for tortillas. Camarena says Soleo will stick to its roots as a family restaurant. “We have no plans to open two, three or four Soleos,” she says. —Monica s. nagy

Drink on the cheap

Château Font-Mars Picpoul ($10) France

In 2004, shortly after the Advocate’s annual Cheap Wine extravaganza and $10 Wine Hall of Fame made its first appearance, I wondered about the future of cheap wine: “The news for those of us who worry about inexpensive wine has not been good. ...”

Turns out I worried way too much.

This year, for the 11th annual Hall of Fame, I added eight wines, and could have put in twice that many. Wine producers, for whatever reason, seem to have decided that the future of the business rests with well-made, affordable wine. Who can argue with that?

The new wines: the Ipsum and Zestos Spanish whites, brought into the United States by Patrick Mata’s Ole Imports, perhaps the best Spanish wine importer in the world; Australia’s Yalumba Y Series, and especially the shiraz/ viogner, riesling and rosé, which may be the beginning of a revolution in Aussie wine; a French pinot noir, Luc Pirlet Pinot Noir les Barriques Reserve; a California syrah from Mandolin; and Château Font-Mars Picpoul, a French white wine. Five wines dropped out from last year, most because they’re no longer available in the Dallas area.

The holdovers in the Hall of Fame include Notorius, a white wine from Sicily, which represents the couple of dozen Sicilian wines that I have enjoyed over the past four years; the $10 wines from California’s Bogle Vineyards, and especially the old vine zinfandel and petite sirah; and the Yellow+Blue 1-liter boxed wines, and especially the torrontes from Argentina.

Also, Dry Creek Fume Blanc, a stellar sauvignon blanc from California; La Fiera Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, a classic Italian red made with the montepulciano grape; and the Santa Julia+ Argentine torrontes and malbec.

Finally, two Spanish sparkling wines, or cavas Cristalino and Segura Viudas; and the countless Gascon wines, white blends from southwestern France, that have become available in the United States over the past year, such as Domaine Tariquet, Domaine Artigaux, Domaine de Pouy, Domaine D’Arton, and Domaine Duffour.

unique, fun and beautiful things our neighborhood has to offer

Our neighborhood — it’s the place where we live out most of our days. Where we — often robotically — run errands, taxi around our children, pick up the dry cleaning, sit in traffic and perform myriad mundane tasks. Sometimes, as it plays host to our busy lives, home can lose its magic. This new year, stop for a moment, take a step back, and have a look at Preston Hollow and the city that surrounds it, through fresh eyes.

MUSEUM OF BIBLICALART

In 2005 a fire destroyed the Museum of Biblical Art and 2,500 works, but that didn’t stop the board of directors from building a grander museum encompassing more than 30,000 square feet. Its art represents biblical themes from all backgrounds and denominations. Scott Peck, co-director and curator, says people don’t realize the breadth of Judaica at the museum, and that’s a surprise for many Jewish visitors. The museum has a number of exact casts from Michelangelo sculptures, and that’s not even the main attraction. Standing at 40 feet wide by 12 feet high, artist Ron DiCianni’s largest work, “The Resurrection Mural,” is a portrait of Christ in oil on canvas with brilliant strokes of color. The mural took more than two years to create and was commissioned by the museum. “The idea is that art is a gateway and window into your spiritual world,” Peck says.

The museum is located on the college preparatory school’s campus but is separately chartered and open for tours by calling one week in advance. Docents guide visitors through the collection of paintings, ceramics and photography for free while school is in session, 9 a.m.–2 p.m. Don’t miss the photography gallery’s recent acquisition, the non-altered photograph “Arabella” of a young girl dressed in lace and splashed with nontoxic powdered paints that sweep across the frame.

It’s not just for dedicated runners and cyclists — rest areas and limestone benches cater to more casual users, and Fido will appreciate the dog stations. It’s even a great place to catch a flick. Neighbors brought their blankets and picnic baskets to last year’s movie night, relaxing at St. Michaels respite area between Preston and Central to watch “The Princess Bride,” says Ben Johnston, Friends of Northaven Trail board member. The next movie night takes place this spring, he says, so check the website for updates. The trail isn’t yet complete; the plan is to connect Northaven’s east end to White Rock Creek Trail near the Cottonwood Trail. Find up-

Lifelong Realtor brings back fond childhood memories Realtor Ebby Halliday of Preston Hollow surprised the owners of a home listed for sale with her company, Ebby Halliday Realtors, when she stopped by Mary Lynn and Skipp Swayze’s $1.25 million Preston Hollow home. Halliday learned through the listing Realtor, Lydia Player, that the Swazyes had met the Dallas real estate icon when they were children. Mary Lynn Swayze recalls meeting Halliday at NorthPark Center in the ’60s while Halliday was giving out candy canes to her and other children. “I remember her telling me that she sold homes. That stuck with me because she was a woman working outside the home. My mom worked outside the home, and that was unusual in those days. I was impressed that she was a working woman, too,” she says. Swayze says she’s also impressed that the 101-year-old Halliday is still at it.

MOMENTS OF ZEN

It’s hard work to lead a Zen-like life

A recent column by Joy Brennan, a PhD candidate at the University of Chicago Divinity School, takes on the subject of Zen. At the end of each episode of Jon Stewart’s “The Daily Show,” there is a “Moment of Zen” — a clip of something restful and quiet, meant to give the listener a moment free of stress and distraction, suggesting our need to silence the many voices and noises that clamor for our attention in a hectic world. This is not a bad thing, because most of us need a few moments like that throughout the day. We need a good dose of inner peace.

However, suggests Brennan, this “Moment of Zen” reveals a general lack of understanding of what Zen really is.

“Zen appears to have a lot to do with spas, tea, yoga and the kind of physical beauty that is attributed to the radiation of inner peace,” she writes. Zen is portrayed as “formless, undemanding and perhaps even absurd.”

The problem Brennan has with this portrayal is that it is, to put it simply, just not accurate. Real Zen Buddhism is actually demanding and highly structured. Students of Zen commonly meditate for six hours or more, getting up in the wee hours of the morning to begin a disciplined schedule of meditation and work. It is a discipline far more demanding than most of us would feel comfortable with, and it is through this discipline that inner peace comes.

While I am not a Zen Buddhist, but a Presbyterian minister, I find an important message in Brennan’s reflections. Whatever our religious identity, so many of us want a religion that gives peace and tran-

quility without the discipline. Just as images of waterfalls and soft music do not do justice to the disciplines required of the real practitioners, our common religious practices do not do justice to faith’s demands. While I understand our need to find ways to stop, breathe and reflect, there is more to the life of faith than rest periods.

What we tend to forget in my tradition is that, along with inner peace, faith also

demands attention to love and justice. We tend to forget that the same Jesus who reminded us to be like the lilies of the field also told a parable about separating the “sheep” from the “goats” — that is, those who served “the least of these” from those who didn’t. I find it fascinating that each group was unconscious of their actions. Those who served respond with, “When was that?” while those who ignored the plight of others asked the same question. In other words, people who care and people who don’t have one thing in common: They either served or failed to serve unconsciously.

Brennan concludes that faith — real faith — is “not a walk in the woods.” Yes, faith offers the gift of badly needed inner peace, but we often fail to realize that this peace comes as a result of a disciplined life of care and love for others.

No more tailgatiNg for mike.

Mike Molthan had been having some medical issues that week.

“I went to the hospital with migraines and high blood pressure,” he says.

Doctors kept him for a couple days to make sure everything was OK. As if things weren’t bad enough, one night when his wife returned from visiting him in the hospital, the tailgate on his 2011 Chevy Silverado pickup truck had been stolen.

The tailgate will cost a few hundred dollars, Molthan says, but his insurance will probably cover it. In recent days, he says his health issues have subsided and he is trying to stay positive and take things in stride.

“This is very minor to me,” he says of the stolen tailgate. “It’s not a big deal.”

The Victim: Mike Molthan

The Crime: Auto accessory theft

Date: Monday, Nov. 19

Time: Between 6:30 p.m. and 10:15 p.m.

Location: 6600 block of Mimosa

Dallas Police Major Bill Humphrey of the North Central Patrol Division says this type of crime is tough to prevent.

“It doesn’t take long to remove a tailgate, even a locked one, making it a more elusive crime,” he says. “The average one to replace is around $1,200, according to some websites. We are seeing some of these types of offenses, but not consistently. With the cameras on some of the new tailgates, their costs obviously increase, which may make them more of a lucrative target.”

Humphrey advises residents to consider some additional safety items that can be purchased from a dealer or vehicle accessory store. And always call 911 when you see unusual or suspicious activity, he adds, giving police the best chance to make an arrest.
