PRE-RECESSION BLINDERS ARE OFF
It now appears that Dallasites had the best vision
I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but the days of blindly buying things for ourselves are over. Forever. And ever.
That’s what the national media says: that Americans’ general lack of wealth is contributing to more sustainable personal spending, that today we’re spending disposable income while for the past 20 or 30 years, we’ve been spending everything we had plus a lot we didn’t.
It’s an interesting thought, isn’t it, that the economic crisis has permanently changed our lives, that we’ll never again live beyond our means and that in the future, we’ll always do what’s “right” economically, and we’ll always use our heads before spending money instead of
just buying whatever we see advertised on TV as long as we still have some plastic in our pocket.
The national media experts say we’re volunteering more, attending more cultural events with family and friends, spending more time together talking and, even though we’re still going to the malls, we’re not spending as much money there because we’re just using malls as places to hang out.
It’s good to know that facing down economic Armegeddon has done so many good things for our lives.
What intrigues me is that a lot of us don’t know which way the wind is blowing, even if there’s a flag right in front of us. We depend on the cues of others to determine our direction, and we feel intimidated if we make a decision that goes against the grain, even when we’re right. It’s not so much herd mentality as it is fear of being wrong alone. Being wrong together is OK, but being wrong alone is flat-out scary.
here. The schools are better out there, so the thought process went, the buildings newer, the houses bigger and the streets smoother.
But now that so many of us supposedly can’t afford to live too far from work, and we don’t want to be too far from schools, and we want to make sure our kids experience all that life has to offer, living here where we live is starting to look better to a lot of suburbanites. Dallas is a city that, despite its well-known problems, has never been more vibrant. Many of our neighborhoods are on the upswing. Our public schools, while not perfect, have improved. Our public transportation, while still limited, is expanding. For better or worse, we’ve invested a lot of our tax dollars Downtown, and the place is starting to look good even if there’s still plenty of room for improvement.

Cody Miller says he and his longtime buddy, Preston hollow resident Ryan Pearlman, sort-of have a reputation for being the life of party. “We’re the guys you constantly see on the dance floor,” he explains. but the pair noticed that at most of these birthday shindigs or school functions, the music was outdated. “Don’t get me wrong, classic rock is great, but it can get boring when you’re hearing it over and over.” So the then 14-year-old friends decided to launch a DJ business targeted at a niche market: their generation. the pair began internships with a DJ who showed them the ropes, and it wasn’t long until they had branched off to start their own gig, R c Jams. the now-juniors at Parish episcopal School say they tailor each playlist to the client, spending about a month creating a custom mix. “So if we’re going to a 13-year-old girl’s birthday party, we’ll throw in some Miley cyrus,” Pearlman says, “and for a high school crowd, we’d probably play more rap or hip-hop, maybe some Lil Wayne.” And they bring a dancer to each event, “just to keep the crowd’s energy up,” Pearlman says. the boys, who book about 15 events per year, are now finalists for the tcu Young entrepreneur Award, which could translate into some scholarship money. “I don’t think either one of us ever thought it’d snowball into this,” Miller says. If they attend the same university — as is the plan — they hope to continue their business throughout college. “ then,” Miller says, “who knows what’s next.” —Marlena

A GUIDE THROUGHTHE MAZE OFCITY-RELATED QUESTIONS
? Cars are always SPEEDING down my street. How can I get ROAD HUMPS installed to make them slow down?
The City of Dallas has a program specifically designed to allow residents to petition for road humps (also known as road bumps) on a street, but it’s not a simple process, and depending on the average speed of cars on your street, it may cost you. If money is not a stop sign for you on the road to safer streets, here’s how it works:
1. Several requirements must be met for your street to be deemed eligible for the program, so first you need to see if yours qualifies. The four main criteria are that your street must:
Be at least 1,000 feet long and provide access to “adjoining lowdensity residential properties” (meaning single-family homes, duplexes, triplexes and fourplexes — not apartment complexes)
Have only one traffic lane in each direction
Not be listed as an emergency response route by Dallas FireRescue or less
To find out if your street qualifies, contact the City of Dallas Public Works and Transportation Department at
214.670.4020. They will instigate a review of the location by Dallas FireRescue to confirm eligibility.
2. If your street qualifies for the program, you must petition for signatures from two-thirds of the households on the proposed stretch of road in order to install road humps. Once complete, the petition can be sent to: Road Hump Coordinator, Department of Public Works and Transportation, City Hall, Room L1/BN, Dallas, TX 75201.
3. Approximately three weeks after the petition is received, the city will perform a traffic study to determine the average speed of vehicles on the street. This will determine how much of the total cost the residents must pay.
4. Based on the findings, residents will have to decide whether they are willing to pay for their share of the road humps, each of which measure 12 feet long and 3 inches high, and cost $1,100. If the city finds that traffic violators are traveling at an average speed of 35 mph, residents are responsible for 100 percent of the cost. An average speed of 36 mph, however, reduces residents’ share to 80 percent; 37 mph reduces it to 60 percent; 38 to 40 percent; and if violators are driving at average speeds of 39+ mph, the city will foot the entire bill.
For more information, contact the Public Works and Transportation Department at 214.670.4020.

Robin Goldstein may know more about cheap wine than anyone else. He is the co-author and guiding force of “The Wine Trials 2010”, the second edition of the book that rates 150 of the best wines in the world that cost less than $15. His method — blind tastings — and his results — cheap wines that have fared significantly better than more famous and more expensive ones — have infuriated the mainstream wine world. One eminent wine writer went so far as to call Goldstein’s approach “almost an anti-intellectual position.”
Which is an interesting thing to say, given that the book has a scientific advisory board and 30 footnotes, in addition to the 150 wine ratings. (Full disclosure: I participated in one of the blind tasting panels for the first edition in 2008.)
More than anything else, the mainstream wine world, which has so much invested in the concept that expensive wine is always better than less expensive wine, doesn’t like the idea that a wine can’t be judged by its price. I don’t know that I agree with all 150 wines in the book (and I’ve tasted all but 25 or so); many simple, fruity wines did better than they should have, and there aren’t enough rosés again this year. But Goldstein’s concept is sound. Price is a better guide to quality than a cute label, but it’s not the be-all and end-all the experts want us to think it is.
Here are three of my favorites from this year’s selections: Chill this, and drink it when the summer heat makes you crazy. I tasted it with some wine types when I did a story about $6 wine a couple of years ago, and we were stunned at how well-made it was.
One of my all-time favorite wines — bring on the red sauce and Italian sausages, and marvel that a wine this well-made could be this inexpensive.
This sparkling wine from Spain is a step up from $8 cavas like Cristalino — a little richer and a little less tight (a wine term that denotes where the flavors seem crammed together.)—JEFF

Last-minute spaghetti sauce
Spaghetti sauce in a jar is not necessary. This takes almost as little time, and it tastes more like tomato sauce and less like salt. Serve this over your favorite pasta and with the Vitiano. If you’re feeling adventurous, chop some onion, celery, carrot and bell pepper in a food processor so it’s very fine, and sauté in a little olive oil before you add the garlic and liquid ingredients.
Serves 6, takes about 20 minutes
1 28-oz can tomato puree
2 6-oz cans tomato paste
2 cloves garlic, chopped
1 Tbsp olive oil
2 bay leaves
Salt and pepper to taste
1 to 2 c water, red wine or white wine
1. brown the garlic in the olive oil over medium heat in a large pot until the garlic is fragrant. add everything else except the water or wine and mix well.
2. add the water or wine a little at a time, until the sauce is as thick or thin as you like it (you may not use all of the liquid). bring to a boil, cover, and simmer 10 or 15 minutes.

Q. What’s the biggest Wineproducing state in the country?
A. In 2008, California produced 90 percent of the wine made in the United States, according to the Wine Institute. That figure has remained consistent since 1995.

How little acts of selflessness make a big difference in our neighborhood
Story by Marlena Chavira-Medford · Portraits by Can TürkyilmazThey can’t leap tall buildings in a single bound, and they won’t outrun a train, but these neighbors do out-of-the-ordinary things that improve our lives. They don’t act heroically for recognition — they typically laugh away the notion they’re heroes at all. These neighbors simply give of themselves because that’s how they tap their own sense of satisfaction and accomplishment.
Most neighbors who live near Kramer elementary know ron brakke, even if not by name. They’ve likely seen him walking the school grounds, always with a trash bag in hand. each dawn, like clockwork, brakke is at the playground retrieving litter.
“Just the other day, a woman in the checkout line at Tom Thumb said to me ‘Hey, you’re the trash man!’ and neighbors will call me from time to time asking if I’ve found a lost pair of sunglasses or keys at the school, so I guess I’ve got a reputation.”
That’s a safe assessment, says Julie HalleyWallace, a fellow early-morning walker.
“He’s like the rock of Gibraltar; you can count on ron. every morning, he’s out there with his bag, picking up trash.”
Halley-Wallace also picks up trash on her morning route.
“If he tells me he’ll be out of town, I try and pick up the slack while he’s gone and make sure the neighborhood stays tidy.”
The neighborhood could use more people like brakke, she says.
“He genuinely cares about our neighborhood, and he’s a great example for our community.”
brakke’s quest to keep the community litter-free began several years ago at an HOa meeting when some neighbors who lived on the north side of the school were complaining about trash there.
The excessive trash bothered brakke, too. but when the then-school principal simply shrugged off his complaints, brakke says, it was time to take matters into his own hands. He began collecting bags of garbage from the school … and leaving them on the passenger seat of the principal’s Jeep — “just a subtle hint,” he jokes.
That principal has since moved on, but brakke has dutifully remained keeper of the grounds. as a token of their gratitude, Kramer parents awarded brakke and his wife, becky, lifetime PTa membership awards.
“My wife was PTa president at that school once upon a time when both of our daughters went there,” he says. “I guess that’s partly why the trash there bothered me so much: It’s our neighborhood school, and we should take pride in it. I know I do.
“I think there’s less trash there now. Hopefully, I’ve made a difference, even if it’s just a little one.”
NELLEKE KELLER
Not your ordinary cat lady
It was a Sunday morning like any other. Nelleke Keller and her husband were leaving church when they spotted a stray cat in the parking lot. Little did she know what a big impact that one little cat would have on her life.
“I could never get too close to her because she wasn’t tame; she’d been in the wild too long. But I’d see her from time to time, and I named her Mary because she looked so sweet, so innocent. But when she had a litter of kittens, I changed her name to Mary Magdalene.”
She saw that the kittens were malnourished and decided to foster that litter. Keller found foster work so rewarding that she has virtually dedicated her life to it.
Food, litter, veterinarian visits — she funds the entire operation out of her own pocket, a bill that ranges from $400 to $500 per month, depending on how many cats she is fostering. “This is certainly a labor of love, but I do it because I think it helps our neighborhood by keeping the feral cat population down. I make sure these animals are spayed or neutered and adopted to loving homes. And I do it because I enjoy it.
“When my husband died, I don’t think I would have made it if it weren’t for these cats. They were my reason to get out of bed. Animals don’t care if you’re mourning or not, they just want to be fed. They forced me to move on.” That constant supply of kittens has understandably made Keller’s home popular with kids in her Sparkman neighborhood. Children are always welcome, she says, and sometimes parents will even bring her a bag of cat food or give a donation — a gesture she welcomes.
If neighbors find a cat in need, they know Keller is the go-to person.
“My daughter found a near-dead kitten only weeks old in the alley last fall,” recalls neighbor Susie McMinn. “We didn’t know what to do and [Keller], without hesitation, took the
kitten in, got her shots, medicine, and nursed her back to health.
“and when one of my cats was killed by a car in front of my house in November, [Keller] was right there with this lovely kitten, Misty, who was ready for adoption. She is a wonderful cat, and her extreme affection to humans I think comes from Nelleke’s nurturing of her as a baby.”
Keller says that neighbors “definitely know me as ‘the cat lady’ — though I call myself ‘madam of the cathouse’,” she jokes.
It’s a role Keller is right at home with, she says.
“I plan on doing this as long as I can. It’s good for the cats, it’s good the community, it’s good for me — it’s just good all around.”
steve kahn nurturing turf and budding minds
Preston Hollow elementary once was surrounded by sprawling countryside on the outskirts of town. Sixty-three years later, that same red brick building is in the heart of a bustling city. although its surroundings have transformed, its quality remains uncompromised.
Just ask Steve Kahn. He attended the school 40 years ago, and today, he has a third-grade daughter there.
“It’s as clean and impeccable as it was back then, and the teachers are as phenomenal as ever.”
but he did see some room for improvement outside the school. “The soccer fields there were virtually just hard dirt, so I started pampering it.”
and by pampering, he means pouring hours of labor and money over the next two years to restore the fields into
the lovely green turf it is today. In the summertime, that means getting out there about four times a week for up to three hours at time.
“Initially, I tired to mow that lawn with a push-mower, but that didn’t last very long, especially in the heat.”
Today, you’ll spot Kahn out there on his red tractor mower.
He’s somewhat of an icon now, and neighbors bring him a Gatorade from time to time when they see him working.
“Now all the neighbors know me, but when I first started, I actually had the cops called on me. I was out there one night on the fields with a tiller attached to my car. Our neighborhood patrol officer came to investigate because he’d had a call that someone was out there doing donuts, but it was just me out there tilling.
“From then on it kind of became an inside joke: every time he’d get a call, he’d drive by and flash his patrol lights at me. We’d always get a kick out of it.”
but Kahn has done more than just till and mow that lawn. He also built up a soccer program for Preston Hollow elementary. In less than two years, the school has gone from having no soccer team to about 150 kids playing on four teams, two of which he volunteer coaches.
He has also footed the bill for team uniforms, new goal nets and a striper so he can mark the fields for each game. Maintaining the soccer program takes a lot, but Kahn says he’s happy to do it because it’s making our neighborhood a better place.
Preston Hollow principal Pete Chapaskso says Kahn also does plenty away from the fields.
“Let me give you just one example: When I first got to this school, the

“Like just the other day, our teachers were out on holiday, so we were shorthanded in the carpool lane. [Kahn] just parked his car, got out there and started helping to load the kids into cars.

Kahn says he’s happy to help.

BE THE MIRACLE
A priest makes a life-giving donation to one of his parishioners
Carrie Gehling is a chirpy, brighteyed woman, full of one-liners. It’s largely that disposition that has carried her through a lengthy battle with diabetes, which began in her adolescence. The disease has taken an exceptionally heavy toll on her health, causing partial amputations to both of her legs and rendering her unable to walk. Vascular damage brought on by the diabetes has caused four heart attacks, one of which left her clinically dead for nearly three minutes. She has been on dialysis for the past 13 years.
“It’s no way to live,” Gehling says with uncharacteristic seriousness. “I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.”
around the time she began her dialysis, Gehling started exploring the possibility of a kidney transplant, which would eventually allow her to function without dialysis. but because her medical history made her a high-risk candidate, hospital after hospital denied her.
“each time I was denied, it was crushing,” she says. “I had to totally turn it over to God and realize that it was in
his hands. Like I always say, ‘Thy will be done.’”
It was in the midst of this quest for a kidney transplant that Monsignor Mark Seitz became a pastor at her church, St. rita Catholic Church.
“When I met Carrie,” Seitz says, “I was inspired to see how she used her faith to bear this.”
Compelled to help her, Seitz tried to arrange a trip to Lourdes, France, with the Knights of Malta, a group that chaperones pilgrimages to the holy site.
“They said because of her fragile health, they were worried she couldn’t make the journey,” Seitz explains. “but I didn’t give up. I just scaled it back and started thinking about what we could do closer to home.”
Seitz was able to find a pilot within their parish who owned a small plane. With the help of that pilot, he was able to arrange a day trip to basilica of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle in San Juan, Texas. Gehling says that pilgrimage in april 2008 became a turning point.
“When I walked in to that basilica, I
started welling up in the eyes because the presence of God was so overwhelming. It was this beautiful aura that washed over you. Just thinking about it makes me smile.”
It was soon after that pilgrimage that the tide began to turn: Medical City Dallas Hospital agreed to do the kidney transplant, under the condition that she find a live donor.
“There is a higher success rate with live donors,” Gehling explains. even though she had cleared one hurdle, another remained. Finding an acceptable donor was a tall order. Typically, kidney donors are tested on a set of nine criteria. In most cases, donors and recipients have to match five of those criteria. In Gehling’s highrisk case, donors had to match her on seven of the nine criteria.
In other words, the odds were stacked against her.
“and even if we found a donor that matched,” Gehling says, “the doctors told me there was still an 86 percent chance I wouldn’t make it off that sur -
gery table. I just said, ‘Well, that’s OK. My faith is going to carry me another 114 percent.”
Inspired by her unyielding faith, Seitz says he started to reassess his own faith.
“I realized that if I was going to ask other people in this church to donate a kidney, I needed to be prepared to do it myself. We preachers get a lot of chances to talk about faith, but we also need to put it in practice,” Seitz says. “This was a chance for me to do that.”
Seitz followed through, “walking the talk” as Gehling puts it. He volunteered to donate his own kidney, enduring months of stringent medical and psychological testing. Living those months in limbo was grueling, they both say. Doctors warned them not to get their hopes up, as the odds for a match were still not in their favor. But as fate would have it, Seitz and Gehling were indeed a match. And in fact, he matched Gehling on eight of the nine criteria, even though he was only required to match seven of the criteria.
“I already knew he was perfect; I just didn’t know his organs were perfect,” Gehling jokes.
When they went into surgery this past November, Gehling was still facing the very real possibility that she would not live through the procedure.
“I wasn’t allowed to take anything metal into the operating room, but you better believe I had my plastic rosary,” she says. “I was gripping it so tightly I think my knuckles turned white.”
Not only did Gehling defy the odds and survive, but her surgery also went exceptionally well.
“The doctor told me that our arteries morphed together before he could even sew them together,” Gehling says. “He said typically, it takes about 40 to 60 stitches — but in this case, it only took 10 stitches.”
In fact, she says, the doctor had to double-check to make sure Gehling and Seitz weren’t siblings. It’s very unusual for unrelated people to have tissue so similar — so unusual in fact, that the doctor was deeply moved by what he saw.
“After the surgery, he kissed me on the forehead and told me he’d just wit-
nessed a little miracle,” Gehling says.
Another doctor, after hearing the story, was so moved that he made it a point to meet Gehling in person. He confessed that he had let his career come before his faith, but that he now felt moved to make some spiritual changes in his life, thanks to her. Gehling says she encouraged him to keep God where he belongs: above all else.
“So he tells me, ‘You’re talking like a true priest now,’ and I say, ‘Well, I do have the kidney of one,’” she recalls with a hearty chuckle.
Since the operation, Seitz’s health has actually improved — a further affirmation that he did the right thing, he says. And he has benefitted from some other perks, too.
“It just so happens that Carrie and her mother, Carmen, are two of the best cooks in the parish, and they do cook for me now,” he jokes. “They make a killer meatloaf, and I love the beef stroganoff and pork chops.”
“Oh, we keep him well-fed,” Gehling chimes in with a laugh.
Since the operation, Gehling has gotten her diabetes under control, no longer requiring any dialysis. She says she now has a new lease on life.
“When I came home from the hospital after my surgery, I started crying when I saw my house because by all accounts, I should be dead. I see life with a new appreciation now, and I’m truly thankful to just be alive. I’m in physical therapy, and my goal is to now get out of this wheelchair within a year.
“I want to help more people, too. I’m thinking about becoming a social worker, or an advocate for transplant patients. And I think it’s time we took this show on the road — I’d love to meet Oprah.”
She also spends time praying for others who are ill or facing hardship, as so many prayed for her before.
“Instead of pay it forward, why don’t we pray it forward?” Gehling asks. “Prayer is more powerful than anything, and everyone can afford it.”
Gehling says the whole experience has left her feeling “proud, honored and sometimes unworthy.”
“Miracles happen. I just so happen to be one of them.”

S OME FLAWS ARE GIFTS In DISGUISE
I love this story. If you’ve heard it, bear with me, because it’s worth hearing more than once.
A water bearer in India had two large pots; they hung on each end of a pole, which he carried across his neck. One of the pots had a crack in it, and while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water at the end of the long walk from the stream to the master’s house, the cracked pot arrived only half-full.
For a full two years this went on daily, with the bearer delivering only one and a half pots full of water to his master’s house. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments, perfect to the end for which it was made. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it was able to accomplish only half of what it had been made to do.
After two years of what it perceived to be a bitter failure, the cracked pot spoke to the water bearer one day by the stream. “I’m ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you.”
“Why?” asked the bearer. “What are you ashamed of?”
“I have been able, for these past two years, to deliver only half my load because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your master’s house. Because of my flaws, you have to do all of this work, and you don’t get full value from your efforts,” the pot said.
The water bearer felt sorry for the old cracked pot, and in his compassion he said, “As we return to the master’s house, I want you to notice the beautiful flowers along the path.” Indeed, as they went up the hill, the old cracked pot took notice of the sun warming the beautiful wild flowers on the side of the path, and this cheered it some. But at the end of the trail, it still felt bad because it had leaked out half its load, and so again it apologized to the bearer for its failure.
The bearer said to the pot, “Did you notice that there were flowers only on your side of your path, but not on the other pot’s side?
That’s because I have always known about your flaw, and I took advantage of it. I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back from the stream, you’ve watered them. For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate my master’s table. Without your being just the way you are, he would not have this beauty to grace his house.”
I am a cracked pot (hopefully not a crackpot!). I make mistakes. I don’t do many things as well as I’d like.
Maybe you can identify with me.
But the message here is that sometimes
even our failed attempts serve a higher purpose. Like the pot, we make contributions we will never recognize.
The Apostle Paul said as much when he called us “broken vessels” that bear priceless treasures within. Don’t be afraid to be your own unique self, cracks and all, because you make a difference.
One day a man named Israel Schwarts was sad because he wasn’t like Moses. One night an angel appeared to him and said, “On Judgment Day, the Lord will not ask you why you were not Moses; he will ask you why you were not his beloved Izzy.”
When you are your own God-given, unique self, you never know what flowers you may leave behind.

2 CAR BURGLARIES ON STONE CANYON ROAD
3 DAYS APART BETWEEN BOTHINCIDENTS
The Victim: Anne Myint
The Crime: Criminal mischief
Date: Friday, Jan. 1
Time: Between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m.
Location: 6600 block of Park Lane
THE VEHICLE SMELLED OF BEER, AND SHATTERED GLASS WAS EVERYWHERE.
Anne Myint and her family rang in 2010 with a simple night at home — hanging out as a family and catching some television. It was a relaxing evening, but the first day of January would quickly make their home the scene of a senseless act of vandalism and theft.
“Happy New Year to me,” Myint says, trying to keep a jovial attitude about the crime. “My back window was smashed with a beer bottle. There was beer all in the back of the car.”
$1,475 TOTAL AMOUNTIN DAMAGES AND STOLEN PROPERTY, WHICH INCLUDED A GUITAR, SPEAKERS AND AN 11INCHCOLORMONITOR
THE ABOVECRIMES HAPPENED JAN. 5 AND 8. SOURCE: DALLAS POLICE DEPT.
After smashing the rear window of her Chevy Suburban, the suspect removed her rear seats from the vehicle.
“Maybe we should have gone out, and this might not have happened,” Myint says. “The glass, that’s just vandalism. It’s not until I saw the seats were stolen that I really got mad. What is wrong with people? That was my private property.”
This was not the first case of holiday heists at the Myint home. Last year, all of her new Suburban’s rims and tires were stolen on Christmas Eve.
“It was only a month old,” she says of her car.
Dallas Police Lt. Barry Payne of the North Central Patrol Division says cases of vandalism were actually down this New Year’sEve, but random acts of theft and vandalism can be a problem during the holidays.
“This does happen occasionally, but not this year,” he says of widespread New Year’s vandalism. “But occasionally we have incidences where teens will wreak havoc on neighborhoods by cutting tires and convertible tops, or breaking windows.”
Payne suggests parking in lighted areas and garages at night when at all possible.
“There is an aftermarket demand for these third-row seats, and they are a common item stolen,” he says.
