design build remodel

The A-Team, the Ghostbusters, the Magnificent Seven… The Burke Company. When you need a job of any kind done right, you call the most skilled and experienced team around. The Burke Company has been a leader in the Dallas design, build, remodel industry since its founding by Pat Burke in 1959. Like its fictitious counterparts above, the Burke team has come to inspire an unprecedented level of confidence in its clients thanks to its long history remodeling homes in Dallas neighborhoods and through the numerous national awards from groups as prestigious as the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) and various industry publications.

Owner Jason Asmar is a Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR) with the National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB) and Project Developer Abby Keyes holds both Certified Green Professional (CGP) as well as Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) designations with NAHB. These certifications affirm The Burke Company’s dedication to providing its customers with the highest level of integrity and quality –from pre-construction planning to project management to saving money (and the environment) down the road.

If you were going to put together a dreamteam of design, build, remodel professionals, you couldn’t ask for a better assemblage than The Burke Company’s in-house designers, architects, builders and project managers like Keyes and construction veteran Clay Knight.

They manage each job seamlessly from start to finish, with an emphasis on communication and a strong rapport with clients. Says Asmar, “We pride ourselves on the relationships we build with our clients and their neighbors. There is no greater vote of confidence in our team’s quality of work than returning to a neighborhood to start a new project.”

“My kidneys failed me. Baylor didn’t.”

When Aaron Wiley was diagnosed with chronic kidney failure, he had few options. “I could do dialysis at a hospital, do dialysis at home or do nothing and probably die,” he says. But at Baylor, Aaron learned that he was a candidate for a transplant. “My wife and I decided it was time to make a change—she became a donor.” After the transplant, Aaron says, “I got my energy back, my mind back, my family back. It’s like a new beginning.” As far as his wife, he says, “she gave me a kidney for Valentine’s Day. How am I gonna top that?”

the trumpet of the robot

Years of practice didn’t make me

a

musician

In high school, I played the trumpet. Baseball was my first love, and I would have much preferred playing on a baseball team than lugging a trumpet back and forth to school.

But skill conspired against me, so somewhere around fifth grade, a friend and I wound up with trumpets in our hands.

We attended band class every day, and we were required to practice five nights a week as homework, 30 minutes per day.

And 30 minutes per day is what I put in; not a second more. My mom’s kitchen timer clocked me in, and when the bell went off, I stopped practicing in mid-note, plopped the trumpet into its case, and set off to find out what was on television.

My friend’s house was on the way home, and when I stopped by — no mat-

ter the time of day or night — I’d usually find him with the trumpet in his hands. He didn’t have a timer, didn’t really need one, because he played as long as he wanted, just for the fun of it.

So he was dedicated, and I was diligent. And I would say most students filling the chairs in band class were like me. We were punching the clock, putting in our time and then moving on.

Some of us were members of a smaller jazz band group (extra credit, plain and simple). If you know anything about jazz, you know that it’s music with no boundaries or rules; it just ebbs and flows, seemingly on its own. You have to know what you’re doing to be a jazz musician.

Having labored woodenly and just long enough over the music I had been provided for the prior eight years, I was in trouble.

As the band played behind me, I stared at the wall, my lips jammed into the trumpet’s mouthpiece, and nothing came out. Nothing. Listening to the music, I didn’t feel anything — other than fright. Years of practice had come down to this: I wasn’t a musician; I was a robot.

I slumped down, defeated, and wondered how more than a thousand hours of practice left me so woefully unprepared for my star turn.

DIS tr I but I o N ph /214.560.4203

The band director liked to give each of us a chance to showcase our talent, so to speak. Whether we wanted to or not, at some point we had to lay down the main track while the rest of the group played background. For the lead, there was no music to follow; the assignment didn’t require specific practice time, and there was no right or wrong. It simply required us to step up and play from the heart, drawing upon all of our years of practice. I believe it’s called a “riff” in the music world.

ADV ert ISING ph /214.560.4203 advertising coordinator: J u DY LIL e S /214.560.4203 jliles@advocatemag.com

And then my friend stood up for his shot, and he literally channeled Louis Armstrong. His music twisted and turned and dropped and climbed rhythmically, and the band fed off his energy and scaled new heights of its own. When he finished, there was an almost audible gasp of satisfaction in the room.

The instrument in my hands was workmanlike but nothing more; the same instrument in his hands was melodic and polished and inspiring.

I’ve often wondered why he was so good, and I wasn’t. In the end, it’s simple: My friend loved what he did, and it showed. I didn’t, and that showed, too.

RECYCLE THOSETVS

A clarification to an answer you provided in the April issue: Someone was asking about getting rid of chemicals, TVs and other various products (“How It Works”). On the TV part, you cited that Goodwill would take a working TV off of one’s hands — this actually is not true.I tried to take some nice working tube TVs to my neighborhood drop-off center a few weeks ago and was refused, as they don’t accept them. I was thrown off, so I checked their website — sure enough, they don’t accept them. However, I was able to find another group that not only would take them, but will come pick them up (and anything else that you would normally donate to a Goodwill/Salvation Army type company): Soul’s Harbor. Just don’t want anyone to go through the trouble I went through many weeks ago — those TVs are very heavy to try and unsuccessfully cart off!

EDITOR’S NOTE: Soul’s Harbor is a Dallas organization working to help men break the cycle of homelessness. The nonprofit can be reached at 972.286.1940 or soulsharbordallas.org. Salvation Army also will pick up working televisions from Dallas locations; to arrange for pickup, call 214.630.5611. The Advocate regrets the incorrect information about Goodwill; for information on what Goodwill donation centers will and won’t accept, visit goodwilldallas.org/donation centers.shtml, or call 214.638.2800 ext. 137.

hot mama aprons

The “it” item this spring isn’t a handbag or shoe — it’s an apron. Or at least that’s the case in Sparkman, where kitschy, vintageinspired aprons are cropping up all over the neighborhood. The trendsetter? Jennifer Carr, the mastermind behind Hot Mama Aprons. “The original idea was inspired by Lucille Ball,” she says of her funky designs, which include combos like hot pink with zebra frills. Carr, who is a mostly self-taught seamstress, launched her line in the 2008 with one thing in mind: “I wanted to create an apron that was a marriage of frill and function.” As a mother who cooks for two growing boys, she knows the combination is hard to find. “I had this one brown apron that was like industrial strength — it was so durable, but so drab. And a friend gave me a cute little lacy apron, but it just didn’t hold up in the kitchen.” Thus, Hot Mama Aprons was born. All of her designs are made with an absorbent terry cloth, have plenty of utility pockets, and are machine washable. Carr says it’s common to see Sparkman women out in their yards wrangling kids or tending to their yards while wearing the aprons, and “if my neighbor drops in to borrow an egg or say hello, you can bet she’s wearing her Hot Mama apron.” That’s probably because “I’ve badgered them all into buying an apron,” Carr jokes, then quips that “I’m sure the women of Sparkman are sick of me but yes, they all have them now.” Carr has expanded her line to include men’s aprons, chef hats, bibs and children’s aprons, which can be made into a matching set for a mother and her child. “If you’re going to be in the kitchen,” she says, “it’s nice to have something fun to put on that makes you feel good.”

It is nearly impossible to turn LEFT at the STOPLIGHT on my street. How can I get a left-hand turn signal INSTALLED ?

1. A citizen can phone either 311 or directly call the City of Dallas Transportation Planning and Engineering office at 214.670.3260. From there, a city employee takes down basic information, such as the intersection in question and the directions in which a turn signal is desired.

2. A city engineer has up to 90 days to take action on the request and will call the citizen to get more information about the intersection in question, including what days and times the intersection’s traffic light seems to cause the most problems.

3. The engineer then conducts a study of the intersection, taking into account traffic and accident reports from the previous three years, as well as studying the sight lines and available traffic lanes at the intersection.

The best thing about this process is that it is relatively simple and pain free: No outof-pocket money needs to be spent, and no forms need to be filled out. However, from start to finish, the process of adding a left-hand turn signal if approved — can take a long time. If you’re willing to wait, here is how it works:

4. The engineer will compile the findings, and get in touch with the citizen within a month of the study’s completion. If the engineer decides that a turn signal is either not feasible, or not needed, the engineer will explain why. If the engineer instead agrees with the citizen that a traffic signal is needed, then the engineer will file a request. (In the past year, 80 requests for new traffic signals were filed, and five of those approved and installed.) The timetable on when action is taken, however, depends whether the engineer believes a left-hand turn signal is urgent, and on other factors such as available funds that the city has for projects such as these.

5. For more information, call the Transportation Planning and Engineering Office at 214.670.3260.

“Everything here is a story,” Hedda Gioia Dowd says of her salon de soufflé Rise No. 1 in Inwood Village. That’s because everything inside this restaurant has had a former life, like the wine bottles repurposed as drinking glasses and the vintage linen on the tables. “Everything here from the mud on the walls to the flatware to the doors is recycled,” Dowd says. And everything is made with local ingredients, something inspired by her childhood summers in France, where she would spend time making soufflés with her grandmother, who always cooked with whatever was in season at the farmers market. “There’s a natural marriage between food and art when they blend, it adds to the overall sensory of your meal.” For that reason, Dowd serves her soufflés on works of art, literally: All of the plates used at Rise No. 1 are handmade, locally of course, by art students at Brookhaven Community College. “It gives [students] an opportunity to practice their expertise,” she explains. And in return, students are treated to a luncheon at Rise No. 1. Every semester, Dowd gives each art class a project based on the restaurant’s needs. Students spend the semester creating handmade bowls, creamers, bread plates and sauce dispensers — leaving their handprint or fingerprint on each piece they create. Most customers don’t know that all of Rise No. 1’s dishware is local art, but once they find out, Dowd says, it’s always deeply appreciated. “Visitors are absolutely moved.” So moved, in fact, that some even purchase a ceramic piece to take home, which retails at the store for about $40 to $100. “Everyone feels something when they come in and leave with something individual — it’s very meaningful.”

One of the problems with giving wine as a gift is that we often aren’t sure about what to give. Chocolates and flowers are easy; wine isn’t, given the seemingly infinite number of varieties and styles. That’s why, with Mother’s Day upon us, here are a few thoughts about giving Mom wine and serving wine for a Mother’s Day dinner or brunch.

First and foremost, if you do know what Mom likes, give it to her. That means that if she appreciates white zinfandel, it doesn’t matter what you think about white zinfandel. Second, don’t get too complicated. Just because you were impressed with that cult Napa wine doesn’t mean she will be, especially if she doesn’t drink too many cult Napa wines. And finally, wine should be fun. You don’t want Mom drinking something just to please you on Mother’s Day.

To that end, here are three wines that offer value and that Mom should like:

The quality of this South African wine, especially at this price, always surprises me. It’s more French in style than anything else, with more mineral than fruit and just a touch of lemon zest.

Bonny

Doon’s Randall Grahm is equal parts character and great winemaker, and all of his wines deliver value. This vintage of the syrah has a little more fruit than the previous one, but it’s still complicated, interesting and balanced. This is what California syrah should taste like. Availability may be limited.

Ice wine is one of the world’s great guilty pleasures, and this is no exception. It’s dessert wine, so it’s honeyed, rich and luscious, but the sweetness is much more than just sugary.

JEFFSIEGEL’S WEEKLY WINE REVIEWS appear every Wednesday on the Advocate Back Talk blog, advocatemag.com/preston-hollow/blog.

Tomato and roasted red pepper soup

How many times did Mom make you tomato soup? So why not return the favor? This tomato soup is amazingly easy to make, and it tastes much better than you’d expect (even with canned tomatoes). you’ll never buy a can of the condensed stuff again. It’s a nice match with the Bonny Doon syrah.

Serves four, takes about 30 minutes

1 28-oz can best quality whole canned tomatoes

1 6-oz jar roasted red peppers

1 onion, peeled and chopped

1 Tbsp olive oil

1 ½ c water

2 tsp flour

2 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed

1 tsp herbs de Provence

1 tsp sugar

salt and pepper to taste

1. Drain the tomatoes and peppers, and save the tomato juice.

2. In a large saucepan, sauté the onions in the olive oil for three to four minutes over medium to high heat. Then add the flour, mix well, and cook for another minute.

3. add the water, mix well, and then add the rest of the ingredients. Bring to a boil over high heat, reduce to low, and cook for 15 minutes. The tomatoes will have broken up, and the soup should be chunky.

4. Let the soup cool for a couple of minutes, and then puree in a blender until it is smooth. Put it back in the saucepan and bring to a simmer. Taste. If it isn’t tomato-ey enough, add a little of the reserved juice. Serve hot.

ask the wiNe GUy?

What is ice Wine?

Ice wine is wine made from grapes that are left on the vine to freeze. Freezing concentrates the sugar in the grapes, which produces the ice wine’s intense sweetness. As such, it is difficult to make and consequently expensive.

but Campbell can talk grout and insulation with the best of them.

For proof, just look at her home. Clean lines, natural light and warm, open spaces abound in her ranchstyle disney streets home.

“i went with a soft contemporary remodel, which means i have those clean lines, but it doesn’t feel too cold or industrial, like a loft. it feels soft and warm, like a home.

From ranch to contemporary, utilizing some tricks of the trade
23 advocatemag.com/preston-hollow May 2010 Looking at Campbell’s chic master suite, it’s hard to imagine this room was once an outdated garage. The square theme of this house carries over into details, like this bathroom faucet. Campbell’s home decor keeps with the overall modern feel of the space.

Campbell also works on commercial projects. Recently, for example, she remodeled La Calle Doce in East Dallas after it burned down. This home remodel isn’t quite complete. Campbell has plans for an outdoor kitchen near the pool.

This new kitchen is complete with modern amenities, like a built-in wine refrigerator and warming drawer.

Even from the street, the clean lines and square theme of the house is apparent.

If you pay attention, you’ll see those squares throughout the entire house, down to the square-shaped curtain rods and bathroom sinks.

and that front door was a custom creation that, surprisingly, was quite affordable.

“Front doors can be really expensive you can drop $1,500 on one easy. So instead, I just bought a glass-pane door for about $250, and then I had those squares

sand blasted on the glass for about $100. I would encourage anybody who is trying to save money to explore that option.”

Campbell is full of money-saving tips, like her advice about going with a glass backsplash in the kitchen instead of tile.

“Glass is much less expensive than tile. In my kitchen, I had the back of the glass painted so that it matched the color scheme, and when I have guests over, I always get compliments on it. It’s something very different, which people love, and it’s easier to clean than tile.”

Most of those tips Campbell picked up through trial and error — much like her construction skills.

“I didn’t wake up one day and decide to be a contractor; it just happened to me. I started dabbling with small projects when I was in my 20s and fixing up rental properties, and I discovered I was pretty good at it.”

She continued doing home projects on the side, but worked full-time in the tech industry.

“But when the tech bubble finally burst, I

By using soft tones and clean lines, Campbell has created a living room that is modern yet cozy.

The square theme is carried throughout the house, as evidenced here with these shelves and frames.

Campbell also paid attention to detail, keeping with the square theme when selecting curtain rods.

Even the pets were taken into account during this remodel. Sasha, Campbell’s miniature pinscher, is able to access the back yard via her own little door, which she shares with the cat, Felicia.

construction, Campbell says she realized she had an eye for design. When she purchased her home in 2008, for example, it was a two-bedroom, two-bathroom house — but Campbell envisioned a new design. bedroom, three-bathroom structure. She also designed a new backyard with a pool and added a new detached garage.

“I also put a sound system throughout the entire house, which I think is pretty neat. a few weeks ago I had a house party with a couple of musicians playing out by the pool, and thanks to that sound system, we could hear them in every room inside.”

Campbell says the 1950s ranch-style of her home lends itself nicely to remodeling — as do most homes in the Disney Streets. In fact, Campbell has remodeled four houses in her neighborhood, all of which have been totally gutted.

“The homes in this neighborhood are great for remodels because you can keep with the traditional look or go for contemporary. Either style works nicely.”

Some homeowners, she says, fail to see the hidden potential in these older homes.

“I remember when I was getting ready to remodel another home in this neighborhood. The couple across the street

couldn’t believe I wanted to remodel that place. They didn’t understand why I didn’t want to just tear it down and start over. But once I was done, they came back and ate their words.

“I think a lot of people just get overwhelmed when they think about remodeling their homes. There’s this range of emotions you go through when you’re redoing your house, so I always try to walk my clients through that and tell them what to expect. Remodeling is a bit like therapy. I always tell my clients, ‘You’re going to be happy to see me come, but you’re going to be even happier to see me go.’”

And remodeling a home doesn’t have to be a major renovation, Campbell says.

“You can do small things to modernize these houses, like replacing sliding doors with French doors or putting a museum finish of the same color on the walls and ceiling to add height — and all that is a lot less expensive than tearing down a house and rebuilding a new one.”

adding frames to doors and molding to walls? That’s so pre-modern, according to the experts.

“Prior to modernism, whenever two planes met or two materials met, there was always a joinery condition that was proud of the predominant planes,” says Lionel Morrison, a partnering architect of Morrison-SeifertMurphy. “In cabinetry, ‘proud’ means ‘out from the plane.’ ”

Thus, the crown molding, window frames and other accents common in so many of our homes.

“Modernism reversed that,” Morrison says. “So now, when two planes intersect or two materials join in the same plane, that becomes a negative instead of a positive. There’s a recession, not a projection.”

at 5753 Berkshire, there’s a lack of base moldings, Morrison says. Instead, the outermost layer of drywall hovers roughly a half-inch above the floor, creating a shadow at the base of the wall,

a recession caused by the thickness of the drywall. This is called a reveal.

at 4765 Chapel Hill, designed by architect Cliff Welch, the reveal is painted black, making the corner visually recede even further.

Retrofit

It’s not necessarily simple to remove base, crown, door and window moldings from existing walls and door frames because the process exposes unknown, possibly difficult-to-overcome, conditions.

For example, the ends of planks in wood floors may be uneven and roughly cut; they may purposefully stop short of the wall. an experienced remodeler would have access to a large collection of vinyl plastic and metal accessories called beads, channels and reveals that are designed to bridge and cover unattractive conditions.

In extreme cases, a homeowner may consider adding a layer of drywall, cut short of the floor, to the existing layer in order to achieve that desired gap between wall and floor or wall and ceiling. However, this will produce other challenges that a remodeler will have to solve.

InvIsIble dooRs

Because of the door swing, a typical three-foot-wide hinged door requires approximately 14 square feet in the room it occupies. In a 10-by-12-foot bedroom (120 square feet), that’s a lot of space.

In terms of modernism, a swinging door is another object, like a crown or base molding, that visually clutters a space.

“you take it down to the essential elements of architecture,” says architect Cliff Welch talking about one of his door-eliminating solutions, what he calls a “solid shoji screen,” a white birch, floor-to-ceiling moveable wall that separates an office from the kitchen.

When the wall recesses, it disappears, and the office and kitchen are one freeflowing space. When Wayne Maynard needs privacy while working, he closes the wall, and the screen is a piece of abstract art integral to the house.

In fact, at all four houses in this month’s magazine, sliding doors that disappear into adjacent walls take the place of swinging doors. >>

These wood panels masquerade as a wall, but a tug on the square handle reveals that it is, in fact, a sliding door.

Retrofit

In smaller bungalows, homeowners often need to squeeze as much space as possible out of each room. Replacing interior swinging doors with pocket doors is a first step in that endeavor.

In more rigorous remodels, where whole spaces are being re-thought or where a homeowner is “gutting”, consider different ways to separate larger spaces. For example, a double-sided fireplace flanked by shelving or storage can separate a family room from a dining room. There will obviously be a need for privacy in the bedrooms and bathrooms, but where possible, a homeowner can visually de-emphasize that door by making it a full-height, floor-to-ceiling pocket door.

Or use a custom door with hidden hardware that sits flush with the adjacent wall. The door will disappear.

ARTANDARCHITECTURE

The same impulse to live in a home designed by a top-notch architect directs homeowners to collect distinctive works of art as points of pride.

And part of the architects’ job is to showcase the works by getting out of the way, giving the homeowner flexibility. When walls are simple drywall, they are painted museum white. When walls are a material such as rock, the type of rock is chosen to recede, to be neutral, to act as a backdrop.

Developer Mark Giambrone has such a wide collection of wall-hung art that he asked architect Ron Wommack to maximize wall space, while maintaining an open floor plan at 4143 Buena Vista. Wommack pushed view-and-light-awarding windows to the corners, leaving expanses of white for wall-hung art.

Retrofit

For the budget-minded homeowner reluctant to invest too much money in art, it’s best to know your art collection and know your feature spaces.

An empty house tells a visitor where prized art will shine — a wall opposite the entry door, for example. Choose a color for that wall that will back away from the art and act as a podium, supporting, not competing for attention.

For ultimate flexibility, do what

Small halogen bulbs offer good color rendering, and many contemporary lights are designed with a minimalist aesthetic, again bringing attention to the art, not the object lighting the art.

Because they are inefficient compared to florescent bulbs, use halogen lights sparingly in those feature spaces.

INSIDE-OUT, OUTSIDE-IN

At 5765 Chapel Hill, a screened-in, two-story space abuts the kitchen, a living room, an office and two upstairs bedrooms. When entertaining, Wayne Maynard and his wife, Bonnie Cuellar, can open the sliding doors, and the space becomes an outdoor extension of the kitchen.

Architect Cliff Welch talks about clients who doubt the efficacy of outdoor living in Texas.

the outside in Texas. The weather here is so horrible. When do you do that?’

“It’s not when you think — in the middle of summer. We’ll have a day like this [clear, high in the 70s] in the middle of November or January or December where it’s just absolutely beautiful outside. So, I think Texas has a lot of outside time, if you’re set up to accommodate it.”

In the formal dining room of 5765 Chapel Hill, one wall is given to a window, which has its frame hidden in the floor and ceiling. Strips of clear silicone join the three pieces of glass so that no frame is visible. Outside, ground cover is allowed to come right up to the window. All this was done so that, in Welch’s words, “nothing is between you and the outside.”

Retrofit

In recent years, sliding glass doors have become sliding glass walls, eight-by-four-foot panels with virtually invisible hardware that, when opened, join an outside space with an inside space.

This works best on a house that began its life with modern sensibilities — mid-century modern and postwar homes. However, even houses built in the 1920s and ’30s can embrace the outside. In fact, many of them already do.

Screened-in porches aren’t a modern phenomenon; before airconditioning, they were a place to go when cooling breezes couldn’t get to the interior. Use those old screened-in porches the way they were intended, and enhance the outdoors surrounding it.

Plant an adjacent garden of aromatic herbs. Dig a shallow, bubbling fountain in slate or native Texas river-rock, perhaps with a few koi. Make a screened-in porch a place to enjoy the sounds and scents of nature on a mild spring or autumn day.

WAGING POETICALLY answer key from page 40

1 “Before the sun ...” Here the author is talking about failing eyesight. The clouds and the moon and the sun aren’t quite as bright.

2 “The guards of the house tremble ...” These are the hands, which aren’t quite as steady as they once were.

3 “The strong men are bent ...” There comes a time when we can’t stand up as straight, and our posture suffers.

4 “The women who grind ...” Actually, this is a reference to the teeth—the grinders

5 “Those who look through the windows ...” A second reference to eyesight.

6 “The doors on the street ...” Forgive me, but this is a reference to constipation — even a problem in biblical times!

7 “The sound of the grinding ...” This refers to loss of hearing.

8 “One rises up ...” You wake up at 4 a.m. and can’t sleep.

9 “All the daughters of song ...” Again, deafness keeps us from hearing the song of the birds.

10 “afraid of heights ...” This is exactly what it means.

11 “Terrors ...” You become afraid of things that never bothered you before.

12 “The almond tree blossoms ...” You get gray hair!

13 “The grasshopper...” Yes, this is a reference to sexual prowess.

14 “The silver cord is snapped ...” This last idiom is a reference to the tradition, existing in many cultures, that there is a silver cord that connects body and soul.

A pASSAGE CHOC k f ULL O f H EBRE w IdIOMS IN HONOR O f M y BIRTH d Ay

In the month of May I turn another year older. This turns my thoughts to the theme of aging.

In the book of Ecclesiastes, the 12th chapter, there is a wonderful description of the aging process, and the need to be mindful. The passage is full of Hebrew idioms, which appear in bold.

I challenge the reader to “translate” each saying. Try it yourself. If you get stuck, you can find the key on page 39.

“Remember your creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come, and the years draw near when you will say, I have no pleasure in them; before the sun and the light and the moon and the stars are darkened and the clouds return with the rain 1 ; in the day when the guards of the house tremble 2 , and the strong men are bent 3 , and the women who grind cease working because they are few 4 , and those who look through the windows see dimly 5 ; when the doors on the street are shut 6 , and the sound of the grinding is low 7 , and one rises up at the sound of a bird 8 , and all the daughters of song are brought low 9 ; when one is afraid of heights 10 , and terrors are in the road 11 ;

the almond tree blossoms 12 , the grasshopper drags itself along and desire fails 13 ;

because all must go to their eternal home, and the mourners will go about the streets;

before the silver cord is snapped 14 , and the golden bowl is broken, and the pitcher is broken at the fountain, and the wheel broken at the cistern, and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the breath

returns to God who gave it.”

The point of the passage is that the time to appreciate life and faith is always now, for if we put off the important things, we may discover the crucial importance of life when it is too late.

I’ll try to remember that, among the “darling buds of May”, to use Shakespeare’s

imagery. Now is the time to tell people I love them, to work toward the dreams I cherish, to appreciate each new day. Beginning today, I want to live, not simply exist.

After all, life is too precious to do anything else.

St Ill S tum P ed by Blair Monie’s column? Or wanting to confirm your Hebrew idiom expertise?

The key is on page 39.

Blair Monie is senior pastor of the Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church (phpc.org). The Worship section is a regular feature underwritten by advocate Publishing and the churches listed on these pages. For information about helping support the Worship section, call 214.560.4202.

Spring is in bloom — flowers sprouting colors and grass turning shades of green. John Barnes and his wife were getting ready for some spring yard work at their Winsor Park home. That included moving the lawnmower outside of the shed to get ready for a nice lawn manicure. But before they could start the job, a burglar leapt into action looking for an easy opportunity.

“It appears someone kicked in the gate to the backyard, and then kicked in the door to our shed,” Barnes says. “The lawnmower had been sitting outside the shed, and it was an old one to boot, but they took it.”

Despite the burglar breaking in the shed, nothing more was take,n and Barnes was pleased the gate and shed door would require only minor repairs.

“In the grand scheme of things, we’re fortunate,” he says. “according to the police, there have been a number of shed break-ins in the neighborhood in the last few days.”

as for getting the yard cut?

“We’re going to have to either get a new [mower] or use a lawn service,” Barnes says.

Lt. Barry Payne of the Dallas Police North Central Patrol Division says criminals need only a few minutes to grab property and go, so it is important to always make sure property of any value is secure.

“The best way to keep something from being stolen is to secure it — even if you are only away from it for a few minutes,” he says. “a thief walking down the street has no idea whether a piece of property has been sitting in a front yard for two minutes or two hours. If he wants it and can get away with it, he’ll steal it.”

“Mr. Barnes appeared to have had good locks on his gate and shed but was victimized anyway,” Payne says. “That happens sometimes. all you can do is make the target as hard as is reasonably possible.”
