“My kidneys failed me. Baylor didn’t.”

When Aaron Wiley was diagnosed with chronic kidney failure, he had few options. “I could do dialysis at a hospital, do dialysis at home or do nothing and probably die,” he says. But at Baylor, Aaron learned that he was a candidate for a transplant. “My wife and I decided it was time to make a change—she became a donor.” After the transplant, Aaron says, “I got my energy back, my mind back, my family back. It’s like a new beginning.” As far as his wife, he says, “she gave me a kidney for Valentine’s Day. How am I gonna top that?”

If at first you don’t succeed, just be yourself

It’s high school and college graduation time again and, as has been the case for as long as I can remember, my invitation to speak at anyone’s commencement must have been caught in my SPAM filter.

But, hey: You’re a captive audience, or at least have been up to this point in the column, so perhaps you would be willing to hear my advice to the younger generation, if only they had asked.

Naturally, I would have enjoyed putting on a graduation robe and balancing one of those goofy mortarboard hats on my head while dispensing wisdom, but instead you’ll have to conjure a picture of me sitting in a recliner, feet up, watching a Texas Rangers baseball game while typing this instead.

And here’s what would have been my premise: When it’s all said and done, are you better off blending in and following the crowd, or are you better off following yourself?

I ask this because of something I read the other day concerning the failed Times Square bomber in New York City. An adviser at the bomber’s college was contacted by the media, and his comments about the bomber were both sad and instructive:

“He was personable, a nice guy, but unremarkable,” the adviser said. “If this didn’t happen, I probably would have forgotten him. He didn’t stand out.”

From birth, we’re told we’re special, and we can make a difference. We’re told that if we follow the plan, if we go to the right preschools, attend the right high schools and colleges, get the right jobs and hang with the right friends, we’ll live life to the fullest. We believe that if we can run with the crowd, and keep running beyond the capabilities of the others in the race, eventually we’ll wind up making our mark.

But speaking as someone who has been running for quite a while, that’s really not how life works. Look at people like Lady Gaga or Bill Gates or Bob Dylan or Alex Rodriguez or Steve Jobs or any number of other people, famous and otherwise, who are icons in their own right — not only didn’t they run with the crowd, they practically ran away from it on the way to becoming rich, famous and successful.

The real lesson to be taken from their lives and applied to ours — particularly those who are just beginning their lives as opposed to those of us who have already found our ruts is that they’re living life the way they want to live it, and it seems to be working for them. Instead of worrying about what everyone else thinks, these people are succeeding because they like themselves, and they like

My commencement conclusion: Running with the crowd won’t get you where you want to go. To be happy, be yourself. You’ll find out soon enough that’s a lot harder than it sounds.

Time to throw those mortarboards in the air now

SMU BASEBALL SCAM

Area crime watch groups have reported that solicitors going door-to-door in Lakewood and the Park Cities claiming to be raising money for an SMU baseball trip are scammers. Warns one notice from a Richardson police department officer: “The solicitors may mention that a portion of the proceeds will support the SMU trip to Hawaii in May for a baseball tournament. According to SMU PD, these solicitors are not affiliated with or sponsored by SMU in any way, shape or form. While SMU does have a baseball team, they are not out soliciting funds. This is a scam.” In the Lake Highlands part of town that borders on Richardson, I have encountered a version of this. At the Gatti’s Pizza parking lot near LBJ and Skillman, a young guy asked me to donate cash to his Carter High School basketball team for a summer trip. I wondered why a Carter kid was in Lake Highlands, but didn’t get into it with him. The SMU baseball trip solicitors have been reported in Preston Hollow and North Dallas neighborhoods too, according to the notice.

—CHRISTINA HUGHES BABB, VIA BACK TALK PRESTON HOLLOW

One of these scammers knocked on my door claiming to be the son of a neighbor and on the TCU team. I asked his name and told him to come back after I verified. Needless to say, he was not listed on the team roster on the TCU website and there was no Hawaii trip listed in the team schedule. This was in the Preston Royal area.

—LMK,

One of these scammers did the same thing to me — told me she was the daughter of a neighbor, wanted to know if I’d seen her mom walking their two black labs, and told me she was a U of Dallas soccer player wanting to go on a trip to Hawaii (she could afford the trip but some of her teammates couldn’t). I detected a smell of smoke on her, which was odd considering she was a soccer player, then we looked her up on the UD roster and didn’t find her. My husband tracked her down in the neighborhood and told her to leave or he was calling the cops. She left. I don’t open the door to anybody anymore because I figure if it’s somebody I want to see, they can call and let me know they’re coming.

I lived in Quito, Ecuador, as a child and fell in love with the culture. Dia de los Muertos is still one of my favorite holidays.

I call my husband “my greatest earthly blessing.” I also have a scar on my right knee from a college accident I refused to get stitches for that is pretty awesome. what makes you laugh out loud?

I’m friends with Gambino’s bakery in New Orleans just so their drool-inducing king cakes appear on my newsfeed for a few weeks every year.

if you could only eat at one neighborhood restaurant for the rest of your life, which would it be? I’ve spent an insane amount of time at the new Gattitown. The bumper cars are amazing! They even helped me throw a benefit night for a family friend whose daughter is fighting Leukemia.

how would you explain your neighborhood to someone living in, say, newfoundland? Emerging but old-fashioned. All the convenience of living in a big city with a small town feel.

what brings a smile to your face every time? Childhood photos of my sister and I.

LAunCH

neatly dressed in khakis and a button-down shirt, neighborhood resident Sam Childers sips coffee in a corner booth at Kel’s as he flips through the pages of a book, “Images of America: Historic Dallas Hotels.” The 128-page paperback is chockfull of historic photos and anecdotes, most of which he unearthed over the past year. Childers, who earned his historian chops at the Sixth Floor and Old Red museums, recently published the book. Though it’s his first, he says it won’t be his last.

What made you interested in Dallas hotels?

I, like many historians, present papers at conventions. I did a profile of local hotels, and one was the Fairmount Hotel, where old Hollywood stars would stay. After that, people started calling me “the hotel guy,” so I just kind of fell into it.

What was your favorite part about researching the book?

I could just look at old photos all day, but the writing was the most fun for me. Because I read so much, writing comes naturally. While I was working on this book, I had to write every day because if I didn’t, I’d get distracted. I’d wake up, eat breakfast, take a shower, then head to my office and just write.

DID YOU RUN INTO ANY PROBLEMS

ALONG

THE WAY?

Finding the images was tough. They were from so many different sources. Some had never even been published, like the photos of the Adolphus. They were just sitting in scrapbooks in the marketing department collecting dust.

WERE THERE ANY SURPRISES

ALONG

THE WAY?

I learned that the original Hilton hotels were started here in Dallas by Conrad Hilton — and he’s also buried here.

WHAT IS THE INTENT BEHIND THIS BOOK?

Just education and entertainment. I like looking through old photos, and I think other people do, too. People have memories from these places, like the Baker Hotel. Anyone over the age of, say, 50 will probably have memories of that hotel.

ANYCOOL GHOST STORIES OR LOCAL LORE ABOUT THE HOTELS?

I taped something for Discovery Channel’s “Ghost Lab”, where they were investigating paranormal activity at the Lawrence Hotel. Apparently, there’s a room where, if your key won’t work when you put it in, then you have to knock and say, “Smiley, let me in.” After that, your key will work.

DO YOU HAVE ANY MORE BOOKS IN THE WORKS?

My next project will be about Lady Bird Johnson’s 1964 train trip through the South, where she promoted her husband’s presidential campaign. Presidential history is really what I love.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN DALLAS? AND WHAT DREW YOU TO PRESTON HOLLOW?

I’ve lived in Dallas 20 years, and I’m originally an Oklahoman. My mom likes to joke with me that I’m actually a Texan, though. I lived in Lake Highlands for a while, and I moved to Preston Hollow about five years ago. I really like my neighbors and the location. If you didn’t want to, you wouldn’t have to leave the area because there are so many shops, restaurants and things to do.

WHAT GIVES?

Small ways that you can make a big difference for neighborhood nonprofits

EAT A SANDWICH ...

at Zinsky’s Deli in Preston Royal Village. When you order the triple-decker lollapalooza — three slices of bread, three types of cheese, roast beef, pastrami, turkey, coleslaw and special sauce — a dollar of that giant $16 sandwich will benefit the Jewish Family Service of Dallas, an organization that helps Dallas residents in need, regardless of their religion, race or social class.

DONATE A BLOUSE OR BRIEFCASE ...

to Dress for Success, a nonprofit that helps disadvantaged women enter the workforce by giving them the skills and supplies they need to succeed. Part of that assistance includes workplace wardrobe.

If you’d like to help, donate women’s business attire — like suits, accessories and tote bags — at the boutique, which is housed inside Valley View Center at Preston and LBJ Freeway. Donations are accepted Monday, Wednesday and Friday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Tuesday and Thursday 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. For more information, email dallas@dressforsuccess.org or call 972.392.9770.

PAmPER YOuR PALATE

Af TER m ORE THAN A d E c A d E , it’s safe to say The Mercury has perfected the art of indulgent dining. Executive chef Chris Ward has masterminded purely decadent dishes, like lobster soufflé in a rich creamed brandy sauce, and 48-hour braised short ribs, which practically dissolve on your tongue. In other words, leave your diet at the door. This is a place you’ll want to splurge. And after you’re done pampering that palate, unwind in the recently added swanky Side Bar, where you can linger over an after-dinner cocktail in one of the handsome leather lounge chairs.

Consider it the ultimate carnivore indulgence: The burger bar in the NorthPark Center store lets you choose from five types of patties (including Kobe beef), four types of buns, six kinds of cheese, and dozens of sauces and toppings.

A TO Z WINEWORKSROSÉ 2008 ($10) USA>

Welcome to the eighth annual Advocate rosé column, where motto is: If it’s summer and you have $10, you can buy a pretty good rosé — and sometimes even get change back.

The quality of rosé has improved dramatically since I started the annual rosé column. I don’t know that I have actually tasted poorly made rosé in the past couple of years. Some of them have been too expensive, but that’s another story.

The most important thing to know about rosé is that it isn’t white zinfandel (or white merlot or whatever); rosés are pink wines made with red grapes, and they aren’t sweet. Why are they pink? Because the red grape skins are left in the fermenting grape juice just long enough to color the wine. That’s how all wine gets its color, in fact. White wine is white because the skins aren’t used to color the wine.

Rosés’ fruit flavors are mostly red berries (think strawberry or cranberry). They should be served chilled, and they pair with pretty much any food, including beef and barbecue. Rosé was made for Sunday afternoon, sitting on the back porch, rosé in hand, and burgers on the grill.

A note on vintages: Look for 2009, and be wary of anything dated much earlier than 2008. Rosés are not made to age, and they should be fresh and flavorful. The color in older vintages starts to fade, like paper that yellows.

Rosé styles vary by country. Spanish wines are going to be bone dry with less fruit flavor. French and South American rosés are a little more fruity, while U.S. rosés are the most fruity of all. Some U.S. wines are so full of strawberry flavor that they might even seem sweet. Any of the following (and this is far from a complete list) are well worth trying; you can find them all at Central Market:

Yes, the name is silly, but the quality of the wine makes up for it. This is the rosé for people who want to try something other than white zinfandel. It’s not sweet, but as noted above, it’s so fruity that there is a suggestion of sweetness.

Australia

isn’t much known for rosés, but this wine shows that it should be. The Yalumba is more like a Spanish rosé, with very little fruit and lots of minerality. Plus, using sangiovese gives it an interesting little something that many other rosés don’t have. Highly recommended.

Also made with sangiovese, but with more fruit (cranberry?) and not quite as much minerality as the Yalumba. This is a style of rosé for people who say they don’t like rosé because it’s too fruity.

WITH YOUR WINE

Hummus for people who don’t like hummus

Hummus is one of those things that scares people. What is it? How do you eat it? In fact, though most of the time it’s served as a dip, it actually makes a fine side dish for a summer vegetarian-style dinner. Try it with marinated vegetables, corn on the cob, and pitas or crusty bread. It’s the kind of dinner rosé was made for. And use canned chickpeas — boiling dried chickpeas is one of the least rewarding pursuits in the annals of cooking.

Serves four, takes about 15 minutes (adapted from Mark Bittman’s “How to Cook Everything”)

2 c canned chickpeas, drained (reserve liquid)

1/2 c sesame paste (tahini)

1/4 c olive oil plus 1 teaspoon

1 garlic clove, peeled

1 Tbsp ground cumin

Juice of 1 lemon

Salt and pepper to taste

1. Put everything except one teaspoon of olive oil in a food processor and blend. You want a fine puree. Add the reserved chickpea liquid if the mixture is too thick.

2. Taste. Adjust seasonings, garlic and lemon juice if necessary. Serve in a bowl, drizzled with the remaining olive oil and sprinkled with cumin.

ask the WINE GUY?

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE

BETWEEN ROSÉ AND WHITE ZINFANDEL?

Rosé is made to be dry; that is, all the sugar in the grapes is converted into alcohol. White zinfandel (or white merlot) is made to be sweet. Either sugar is added during the winemaking process, or some of the sugar in the grapes isn’t converted into alcohol. Those wines will have lower alcohol content.

SUMMeR vacatION

E VEN IF YOU CAN ’ T GET AWAY, AT LEAST TAKE A BREAK

As we stand on the threshold of summer, I hope that you will have the opportunity to get away. Perhaps your plans include travel to visit distant family, or maybe some vacation spot where you can see new things and enjoy a change of pace.

On the other hand, a getaway may not be in the cards this year. If that’s the case, you are certainly not alone. The economy has not been exactly kind in recent months, and the idea of a vacation may seem a distant memory.

Either way, I do hope you get away, for there are lots of ways to be refreshed that don’t require a plane ticket or a hotel reservation. Just because this may not be the year for your dream vacation doesn’t mean that you can’t exercise a few ways to renew your soul and spirit.

6. Learn to listen. Try less to be interesting, and concentrate on being interested. Gifted listeners are rare, and they are always loved.

7. Have a picnic in a state park. Our park system is a treasure, and most of us hardly

Allow me to catalog a few things that most of us can do to make the most of the summer:

1. Read a good book. Take some time to browse in a bookstore or local library. Find something a friend has enjoyed, or read one of those books that were on your high school reading list that you never got around to. Schools recommend them for a reason.

2. Read the good book. You know the one. It’s that Bible that’s been gathering dust on the shelf. Find a good readable translation, and read it. Spiritually, it will bring you closer to God. Culturally, it is the basis of much of our culture, art, music and literature. Besides which, it’s full of really good stories!

3. Get some exercise. You’ll get to smell the summer flowers and the new-mown grass. You’ll lose weight, and your body will produce those good chemicals that work like a free antidepressant (OK, I’m preaching to myself here).

4. Get together with a neglected friend that person you’ve been “getting around” to calling for too long. Catch up.

5. Get up early. It’s a myth that sleeping late refreshes the soul. You miss the best part of the day. The early morning is quiet, cooler, and the phone doesn’t ring.

ever use them. There’s nothing better than the smell of charcoal mingled with the echoes of children at play.

8. Volunteer. Do something to get outside yourself. Feed the homeless at The Bridge, or teach English as a second language at Vickery Meadow Learning Center. Or if you want a “serving vacation”, call me and I’ll tell you how you can go to Nicaragua and install a stove for a family.

9. Get a physical. You’ll gain a sense of wellbeing. Men, get your PSA checked. Women, have a mammogram. Everybody my age, schedule a colonoscopy. It could save your life, and give you lots more summers to enjoy.

10. You knew I’d get to it: Go to your place of worship. Good parking and seats are more available in the summer, and God will meet you there.

HOME ON THE RANGE

The students of Providence Christian School recently got a taste of what life was like in the 19 th century during “pioneer day.” Students pulled wool, sang folk songs, and panned for gold. Forget the Wii or iPod, here Preston Hollow kids Gray McCabe and Ana Bruce entertain themselves with toys similar to what Laura Ingalls Wilder would have played with.

BLOCK OF BOEDECKER WHERE DALLAS POLICE DISCOVERED A MAN WHO HAD BEEN SHOT

9:40 P.M.

APPROXIMATE TIME THE INJURED MAN WAS TAKEN TO BAYLOR HOSPITAL, WHERE HE WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD 2

SUSPECTS ARRESTED FOR THE CRIME, WHO POLICE BELIEVE ABDUCTED, ROBBED AND KILLED THE VICTIM, AND A THIRD SUSPECT WAS STILL AT LARGE AT THE TIME OF PRESS

THE ABOVE CRIME HAPPENED APRIL 14. SOURCE: DALLAS POLICE DEPARTMENT

THE LAMPPOST HAD BEEN DECAPITATED.

The Victim: Harlan Hopchik

The Crime: Criminal mischief/vandalism

Harlan Hopchik is perplexed. He was in his Pagewood neighborhood home and heard a loud thud in his front yard. He quickly ran toward the sound, and could not believe what he saw.

THE DALLAS AREA PARKINSONISM SOCIETY will meet Monday, June 7, at 1 p.m. at University Park United Methodist Church, 4024 Caruth. The free event features speaker Sharon Rabb, a clinical nutritionist. For information, call the DAPS office at 972.620.7600.

Date: Tuesday, April 20

Time: 5 p.m.

Location: 10600 block of Stone Canyon

“Somebody basically just drove their car into my yard and hit the lamppost,” he says. “It looks like someone then threw the lamp off the post toward my door.”

As he left his home, he was just able to make out a car driving away. The lamppost that had been in front of his home was dislodged and broken. Hopchik says the lamp is large with concrete at the base and a metal pole out the top, providing light at night for his neighborhood. The lamp did not damage the exterior of his home, he says, but the lamp sustained considerable damage, as did a section of his yard.

“It left a divot about two feet wide. It’s the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen. I just can’t figure it out,” he says.

Barry Payne of the Dallas Police North Central Patrol Division says it is plausible that a thief was hoping to target the lamp for copper or other metals.

“Anything made of aluminum, copper or some other recyclable metals are targets for metal thieves. Based on the information we received on this case, the lamppost was not stolen, only damaged,” Payne says. “We don’t know if this was because the thief was scared off and did not get away with the post, or it was damaged some other way.

“It would only be speculation what happened and why without capturing a suspect to tell us. Something like this could have been done because a neighbor didn’t like the light because it shined into his house, was trying to steal the light or any number of things. Since we don’t have a suspect, we just don’t know.” —SEAN CHAFFIN

HILLCREST MUSIC TEACHER Brian Smith is a finalist for DISD’s Teacher of the Year award. Smith has been at the school for three years, building the band from 19 members to more than 130 in that time.

HILLCREST SCIENCE TEACHER Ward Coats won a $10,000 grant from Toyota and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) for excellence and innovation in science education. Coats, who was one of 79 teachers selected from more than 500 applicants, will use the grant to improve his biology curriculum, and students will be able to use the laboratory at University of Texas Southwestern Medical School.

URSULINE ACADEMY OF DALLAS has expanded its campus to include the French Family Science, Math & Technology Center, a state-of-the-art facility designed to prepare young women for careers in the sciences, math and world languages. The 70,000-square-foot building was funded in part by a $5 million grant in 2006 from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation — followed by a second grant of $2 million in 2007. This is the first school building in the Southwest to receive the LEED Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.

W.T. WHITEHIGH SCHOOL’S varsity and mixed choirs recently performed a UIL concert, during which they earned top ratings. White was the only DISD 5-A comprehensive high school to achieve that honor. Several White students also recently qualified to compete in the state UIL choir competition. These students, coached by Michael Parker and Larissa Kiefer, include: Paola Arreola, Katie Barnett, Andie Barrera, Hugo Campos, Griselda Cortez, Evadney Duncan, Caryssa Hawkins, Lindsay Matteis, Jasmine McCellan, Randi Mireles, Julie Negussie, Nia Newton, Dustin Nicholls, Tempestt Phillips, Anna Plunkett, Sevin Rosa, Brittany Sewell, Megan Sosebee, Demetrio Teniente, Deidre Thornell, Astoria Walton and Jade Watkins
