SING-A-LONG KING
His stardom was short-lived, but he went out with gratitude
Mitch Miller died a couple of weeks ago. Didn’t know him? You’re not alone.
Even if you’ve been following the music scene for the past 40 years, you may not remember the guy best known for a single accomplishment: a television show called “Sing Along With Mitch” that was popular from 1961-1964.
According to a New York Times obituary, Miller was a talented musician (he played the oboe for major orchestras in the 1940s and ’50s) and a big-time producer (he resurrected the careers of Rosemary Clooney and Tony Bennett). For awhile, he seemed to have the golden touch, culminating with a TV show based on a simple premise: Viewers sang along with his men’s chorus while a ball bounced atop lyrics scrolling along the screen.
For several years, “Sing Along With Mitch” was all the rage on TV, as people watched the crisply dressed, goateed Miller cruise through renditions of then-favorites such as “It’s A Long Way To Tipperary” and “Home On The Range”.
Highbrow critics disliked the show — one said it was best viewed with the sound off — but for a few years, audiences loved the downhome shtick and atmosphere.
If stardom was his dream, he achieved it. And then the rest of his life happened.
Just as suddenly as Miller stumbled into the limelight, he faded into the shadows. The TV show was canceled. He failed to sign Elvis Presley for his record label. He passed on signing Buddy Holly. He trashed the then-budding rock ‘n’ roll movement, memorably saying: “It’s not music. It’s a disease.” He effectively shoveled dirt on his own musical grave.
The years passed, and his legacy gathered dust. Then things became even worse. Shopping malls began playing “Sing Along With Mitch” to drive away loitering teens, and ATF agents used “Sing Along” Christmas carols in an attempt to flush Waco’s David Koresh out of his Branch Davidian compound.
Seeing his greatest accomplishment turned into a r unning joke had to hurt. But Miller hung around showbiz, producing a few Broadway musicals (mostly failures) and periodically serving as a guest symphony conductor. Maybe it wasn’t the life he dreamed of — it definitely wasn’t the life he lived earlier — but
it appears he made the best of it.
It turns out I was in Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan at the same time Miller was there dying. But I didn’t know it, because there was no celebrity buzz in the halls and no paparazzi encamped in the lobby.
When Miller died at 99, he had lived long enough to see himself go from celebrity to afterthought. At the end of his obituary, this caught my eye:
“What pleased me the most,” Miller told an interviewer asking about his life, “was a fellow who came up to me after a concert in Chicago and said, ‘You know, there’s nobody in the whole country who hasn’t been touched by your music in some way.’
“That really made me feel good.”
It appears that what mattered most to Miller when his road ended was the journey.
If stardom was his dream, he achieved it. And then the rest of his life happened.

NEIGHBORS AND SERVICE
Neighborhood Services Bar & Grille opened last month at Preston and Royal where Baby Gap used to be. My neighborhood bestie and I went to catch up (after way too long) and were looking forward to checking out the newest restaurant in the ‘hood. The place was packed. We couldn’t stop wondering why it seemed so much smaller than the Gap we spent hours and hours in shopping for our kids before it closed. We decided we felt like we were in Ralph Lauren’s den at a really loud cocktail party.

VOTE AGAINST HELIPORT, GET A BOTTLE OF WINE
Regular visitors here know that I think the worst budget calamity in a city budget full of calamities is the approximately $250,000 earmarked for the city’s “vertiport” at the convention center. So here’s my offer to the city council. I’ll donate a bottle of wine to the campaign of any council member who votes to take the vertiport out of the budget. Yes, I know what you’re thinking — Siegel is offering a bribe. Heaven forfend. That certainly doesn’t happen in Dallas.

VILLAGE TEA TO REOPEN AS I HEART BOBA
You may have noticed the vacant Village Tea Company storefront at Preston and Forest, which just opened last fall. They shut it down in June, sold everything at auction but will reopen as a boba tea shop in the same location. I have to say, I’m excited about this new store, I Heart Boba ... to open the first week of September.

Lori McCracken grew up around country music, traveling around East Texas honkytonks with her parents’ band, her diaper hooked to her mother’s bass drum during shows. “It wasn’t a classic childhood, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.” Now, she’s following in her parents’ footsteps, singing and playing all over Dallas. McCracken’s music harks back to the good ol’ days of country music with influences like Patsy Cline and Tammy Wynette. “I feel like now, music has lent itself to pop and pop country,” McCracken says. “I’m ready to get back to the good, solid, country music. Not much of the younger generation has heard this stuff.” She taught herself to play guitar at age 16 and never took a singing lesson because “you either have it or you don’t,” her mother used to say. To pay the bills, she works as a graphic designer in Plano, but has begun focusing more on her music. She recently recruited a bassist, Dale Stock, and a drummer, Sarah Biglow, to add more power to her acoustic performances. McCracken has written eight original songs, three of them signed to AudioMoxie records — “80”, “Unforgivable Sin” and her favorite, “Stuck in Life.” It’s about that undeniable feeling of wanting to move on from the usual. “Man, if I could just sing and play, I’d be so much happier.” For updates on her shows this month, search for Lori McCracken on Facebook.

GAME TIME
Fro M ThE ro A d, T IME ouT TAvE rn looks like a tiny dive bar nestled among the upscale shops at Lovers and Inwood. But inside, you’ll find everyone from blue-collar workers to corporate executives. Co-owner Kevin McCormack calls it a “nice dive” with “normal people.” He and partner Al Merry bought the bar in the 1980s, pulled it out of debt, and opened it as Time Out Tavern in 1989, inspired by old-fashioned sports bars in Chicago. “It has to have some character,” McCormack says. “It has to have that neighborhood feel.” Countless pieces of sports memorabilia line the walls, including team flags, banners, newspaper clippings and photographs. Most of them came from garage sales or patron donations. Instead of a signature drink, the bar promotes the latest-and-greatest products such as Patron XO coffee-infused tequila and bubblegumflavored vodka. “Instead of having a signature drink, you might be better off experimenting and getting people to try new things,” McCormack says.

SPY VALLEY 2008 ($18) NEW ZEALAND>
Screwcaps aren’t a joke any more. Screwcaps and artificial corks accounted for one-quarter of the wine market in 2009 — compared to just 10 percent at the turn of the century. Meanwhile, the number of screwcaps increases by an estimated 500 million worldwide every year, and more and more expensive, high-quality wines are closed with screwcaps instead of traditional corks.
About the only area of wine where screwcaps haven’t made inroads is with the most expensive wines (and you can find $100 wines with screwcaps). Otherwise, they’re all over the place.
And why has this happened? Natural cork suffered through horrific quality-control problems in the past decade, when as many as 1 of 10 bottles of wine may have been spoiled by bad cork. (The technical term is TCA taint, a chemical process that makes the wine smell like a wet basement.) And though cork’s quality has improved over the past several years, screwcaps are here to stay. They may not take over the world as it was once thought they would, but they still offer quality, especially for wines that don’t have to age.
And they’re much easier to open. These screwcap wines offer a good overview of why the closure has become such a success. All of these are available at Central Market:
This California white is a blend of viognier and chenin blanc — fresh, crisp and fruity, which makes it an ideal screwcap wine. Chill it, twist it open, and enjoy it with grilled chicken with a minimum of fuss.
I’m not a big fan of Australian shiraz, which can be pretentious and difficult to drink — literally, thanks to too much fruit and too much alcohol. That’s not the case with the Jim Jim, which has plenty of shiraz character but without the phoniness.
New Zealand’s wines were among the first to adapt screwcaps, which suit the wines they make — bright and full of citrus and tropical fruits. Spy Valley may make the best sauvignon blanc in the world (and its riesling is even better).

Steamed mussels
Seafood, here in the middle of the prairie, is expensive. Plus, the quality, even when we pay a lot of money, can leave something to be desired. Mussels, on the other hand, are relatively inexpensive, simple to do, and consistent in quality. Serve this with a loaf of crusty bread and with one of the screwcap whites (and use the wine in the recipe).
mussels.
Serves four, takes 20 to 30 minutes
3-4 lbs fresh mussels
1 1/2 c white wine
1 onion, chopped
2 bay leaves
1/3 c chopped parsley
salt and pepper to taste
1. Wash the mussels under cool running water, and remove the beard (the stringy part on the side of the shell), if any. Farmraised mussels, which are sold in most supermarkets, will be fairly clean and mostly beardless. After washing, throw away any mussels that aren’t tightly closed. If it’s open, gently tap the shell, and it should close.
2. Combine everything in a heavy pot, cover, and bring to a boil over high heat. Cook for two minutes. If the mussels have opened, they’re ready. If not, cook for another 30 to 60 seconds.
3.Remove the mussels from the pot with a slotted spoon to a large bowl. Then, carefully pour the liquid in the pot into the bowl with the mussels, making sure not to pour the liquid at the bottom of the pot, which can be sandy, into the bowl.

CAN YOU COOK WITH A SPOILED WINE?
It won’t harm you, but why would you want to? The off flavors of the wine will get into your food. The best rule for spoiled wines is to throw them out.

Some girls brave enough to sign up for roller derby end up with shattered bones, but neighborhood resident Meg Weathers has been lucky to sustain only some bruises and a popped shoulder joint.
“It’s a little bit of a badge of honor,” she says. “I’m almost embarrassed not to tell you I have more. My friend has a hematoma on her leg, and I was a little jealous.”
Weathers, known on the rink as Daisy Shoots, has been playing in the Assassination City Roller Derby League for about year with the Deadly Kennedys. The girls play on the third Saturday of each month from January to October. All four teams will compete in the championship round this month. Although it might look like a bunch of girls skating around in a circle trying to hammer each other, there’s more to it than that.
“It’s all about strategy,” Weathers says. “I think you kind of find a couple of things you’re good at. I’m fast, I can get in front of people. It’s incredibly engaging. You’re looking backward, but you’re skating forward. I get smacked pretty hard, so I fly pretty far.”
Sometimes, right into audience members’ laps. But that’s part of the fun, Weathers says.
“We like our fans to be that close. The energy level is awesome. People are wearing their team colors. It feels really cool because there are a lot people watching you, banging on the walls. My family’s staring right at me. The audience is always going crazy. I can’t think of a sport where you get that kind of exposure.”
When she’s not at her day job working for a local marketing firm, Weathers practices at least twice a week with the league and does yoga on her own to stay flexible. Though Weathers has been working out for years, she has never been much into sports. She actually studied theater in college.
“It’s a sport where people who are nonathletes become athletes,” she says about roller derby. “I think that’s a beautiful thing. It’s made me confident and not doubt myself. The other stuff in your life doesn’t seem so daunting. Assassination City is like a huge family. I have a huge amount of respect for all the girls.”

Reza Anvarian’s alarm sounds at 4 a.m. every morning, and he hits the pavement by 4:45. He runs 5 to 7 miles, swims 2,000 meters and bikes about 40 miles — all in a day’s work. And somewhere in between, he runs a restaurant.
If you’ve frequented Southpaw’s Organic Café on Berkshire, you’ve probably seen Anvarian behind the counter chopping veggies and whipping up healthy rice bowls. When he’s not at the store, he’s training for the Longhorn Half Ironman set for early October in Austin. The triathlon includes a 1.2-mile open water swim, 56-mile bike ride and a half marathon. He’s been preparing for about three months now.
“It just feels good,” he says. “I’m addicted.”
While Anvarian has always been an athlete, triathlons are new to him. That’s because this Golden Glovewinner spent most of his life as a boxer. He started at age 12, right after he moved to the U.S. from Azerbaijan inEastern Europe. He went pro for two years before retiring and settling down in the restaurant business. He completed his first triathlon in Austin’s 2008 CapTex race after his trainer’s wife bet he couldn’t do it.
“To prove her wrong, I went out there, and I did it,” Anvarian says.
Owning a health food store makes it easy for him to eat well every day. But he doesn’t cut out all of the fun. He allows one “cheat meal” a week, like his recent trip to Twisted Root where he indulged in a burger, French fries and fried pickles. After cheating, he returns to his strict regimen.
“I eat super clean during the week. This is a lifestyle, but it’s not my life.”
But it still takes some serious commitment.
“To be able to say I did Ironman, I don’t think there’s anything tougher.”

THE LASTSHOULDN’T BE FIRST
DON’T PUTSOMUCH STOCK IN THAT SINGLE, NEGATIVE VOICE
It’s a problem for me, and I suspect it may be for you. It prevents me from making good decisions, clouds my judgment, and is even capable of ruining my day.
I call it “the tyranny of the last word.” Let me illustrate how this works.
Have you ever noticed that, of all the voices we hear in the course of a day, or even a meeting, the last voice always seems to have the greatest power? Put another way, no matter how many voices we hear, the last word has a way of having the greatest impact.
You’ve just presented a report or finished a project, or preached a sermon, and 10 people tell you that you did a great job. Then the last person in line tells you what was wrong with it (a grammatical error, perhaps, or you mistakenly wore brown shoes with your charcoal-gray slacks).
Which one do you remember? That’s the power of the last word.
Or you’re in a meeting, trying to make a tough decision. Many decisions are not easy; they are choices between imperfect alternatives. Twelve thoughtful people weigh in with their perspectives, their ideas and their suggestions, but of course, not everyone agrees. The big guy in the corner, who has sat silently until now, finally unfolds his arms and weighs in with a strong opinion. You are swayed by the power of the last word, and so is everyone else, as if they have forgotten the other 12 perspectives.
Do you see why I have come to call this phenomenon “the tyranny of the last word”?
If you identify with this, let me offer a couple of suggestions.
http://www.advocatemag.com/
First, while it is true that the opinions of others are important and worth paying attention to, I try not to give too much power over to others. After all, you can’t please all the people all the time — nor should you!
Take it from me. I’m the pastor of a church of almost 3,000 adult members. Most of the time I feel well supported and appreciated, but is everyone pleased with everything I do?
Guess again.
Leo Buscaglia once said, “Why is it that a hundred people can love you and one doesn’t like you, and what do you do? You forget the hundred and believe the one!” I need to hear criticism when it is constructive, but I cannot afford to focus on the negative. And that’s hard, when the negative has the last word.
Second, if you’re in a group that has to make a decision, give it some time if at all possible. Wait a day, and you will do better at balancing all the voices you heard, not just the last one. Experience has taught me that time is my friend, and that I’ll regret decisions made too quickly. I’ve also learned to listen to my own inner voice, the voice of my intuition. When I don’t, I often end up regretting that, too.
Finally, remember the hundred who love you. The other one probably doesn’t know you that well — or you remind him of his brother-in-law.

T HE d Og wAs f E d, BuT THE HOME TrAs HE d.
It was just after sunset when Cynthia macLennan returned home. Her poodle that patrols her home had been a bit sick of late. A friend had come by to check on the pooch, so at first she didn’t think anything of her bedroom light being left on. she hopped out of the car and walked a couple doors down to visit a friend for a few minutes.
When she returned to her house, macLennan was shocked at what she found inside.
“the door was wide open,” she says. “the kitchen cupboard and drawers were all wide open. my bedroom was trashed.”
Frightened by the scene, she quickly grabbed her phone and called for help.
“I picked up my dog and went in my bedroom and dialed 911,” macLennan says. “the police were here so quickly.”
Among the items stolen were jewelry passed down from her mother, a brand new laptop computer, tools, cash and even a pair of her glasses. Fortunately, she had all her computer files on a flash drive.
“I was frightened and angry, and I’m still angry,” she says. “It’s just such a violation.”
strangely, the burglar filled her dog’s bowl with food. And despite many things being stolen, some electronics were left behind. she believes the burglars may have actually been in her home when she drove up.

left the flat screen tV, they probably were spooked,” macLennan says. “It was my driving up that spooked them. I am so grateful I didn’t walk in and get hurt. I’m OK, and my dog’s OK.”
since the burglary, macLennan has added a security system for more protection.
Dallas police Lt. barry payne of the North Central patrol Division says the burglars probably fed the dog to stop it from barking, and may have either been disturbed while stealing, or simply ran out of room for transport.
“It is possible that the burglars were scared off, but there was a lot of property taken and it appears that the suspects may have spent a good amount of time inside,” he says. “Usually if burglars spends a good amount of time inside and they are intending to take something, they move it near the door or unhook it to facilitate taking it. the property may have been too big or too much to carry, but that is purely speculation.”
If a resident returns home and believes someone is in their home, payne recommends staying outside in a safe place and calling 911.
“they should not risk their lives by trying to enter and confront a suspect.” — SEAN CHAFFIN
