WE FIGHT UNFAIR.

GENETIC BREAST CANCER SCREENING

In battling breast cancer, we take every edge we can get. That’s why the Margot Perot Center and the medical staff at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas are out in front in diagnosis and treatment. We’re the only hospital in DFW with Breast Cancer Risk Assessment (BCRA), an online tool that helps estimate your risk of developing breast cancer. We offer genetic screening and counseling at our Center for Cancer Risk Reduction and Genetics. We’re the rst hospital in North Texas offering Breast Tomosynthesis, 3-D imaging that can identify breast cancer in women with dense or brocystic breast tissue. Treatments range from advanced surgical techniques and reconstruction to radiation and chemotherapy. We do everything we can to give you an unfair advantage against breast cancer, like the BCRA. Take yours online today.

Road tRip

It’s an undervalued pleasure these days

It was at about the 3,000-mile point of our 4,100-mile driving journey that our 17-year-old son saw the beat-up little sign: “Hopalong Cassidy Museum” with an arrow pointing straight ahead.

He started laughing, thinking it was another one of the museum oddities we had been keeping track of throughout our trip across 19 states in the Midwest and East, along with the District of Columbia.

We had already chuckled about signs along the road promoting the “Action Figure Museum” and the “National Motorcycle Museum,” among plenty of others. So when I turned the wheel toward Hopalong’s museum, he looked disgusted.

“We’re not actually going to see this, are we?”

“C’mon,” I said. “Hopalong was a real TV cowboy. Let’s do it.”

We were already off the road to refuel the car, and it was a rare day on the two-week trip that we weren’t on deadline to be somewhere.

So we drove around the tiny Ohio town, eventually finding the combination museum and antique shop in a building with tightly and sloppily boarded windows.

That’s the kind of trip we were on, just the two of us, a father-son get-away: part college sleuthing, part baseball watching and part meandering aimlessly.

Being the two least-talkative members of our family, there was plenty of time on the trip to let our minds wander, something difficult to do during hurry-up-and-wait airplane travel. Waiting in line, shuffling through security, waiting in line, jamming aboard the plane, then waiting in line again is tiring, and you don’t really see anything from point to point, unless you count floating high above the clouds as “scenic.”

A driving trip, though, has its own cadence. You control the pace — interstate or backwater roads and you control the stops. You can visit as many or as few McDonald’s as you want. You can compare notes on the stages of public bathroom cleanliness, going all the way from generally disgusting to downright appalling.

And as for scenic: On an endless stretch of highway, you can watch the sky kiss the land up ahead as fluffy clouds float by almost at eye level, something impossible to ponder in a city jammed tight with buildings and lights and smog.

On the monotonous road, cracks in the high-

way thundering rhythmically beneath the car, the mind wanders to all sorts of interesting places, many of which have nothing to do with the trip at hand.

As for Hopalong and his museum, despite my son’s complaints, we parked and walked toward the door, my son visibly slowing behind me as we approached the Promised Land. Then he smiled when he saw the sign on the door: “Closed until next week.” And he jostled me about missing that opportunity for hours and hours and hours.

That’s the ultimate beauty of a driving trip. Gas is still expensive. Driving still takes more time and effort than many other ways to get from here to there.

But there’s something to be said for taking a little extra time to get both somewhere and nowhere simultaneously these days.

Collars for a cause

Americans spend $41 billion a year on their pets. That staggering statistic came as a shock to Preston Hollow residents Jaycie Underwood and Katie Mayer, two blond 20-somethings who had been living in the so-called Dallas bubble until they began working with starving orphans in Kenya. “You walk into a community where all you see is devastation, and every person you meet there beams with joy,” Underwood says. “There’s no way to walk away and not have your heart left there.”

To help redirect some of those copious dollars spent on fancy cuisine and frou-frou clothes for animals, Underwood and Mayer launched Popular Paws. They hand-make “designer” dog collars from ribbon and sell them for $20 to $30 each to benefit the Kenyan orphanage, Naomi’s Village. “It’s sounds silly, but we’re in Dallas,” Underwood says. “This is something that would sell.” And, it did sell — so much that it went from a temporary fundraiser to an ongoing business. Green Pet in Oak Cliff carries the collars, and the girls are looking to partner with other shops in Preston Hollow. Underwood and Mayer both attend The Village Church where their passion for mission work began. They were connected to Naomi’s Village through a couple at the church who had started the orphanage. “I had always thought that my options were limited,” Mayer says. “Traveling isn’t an option. The Lord placed a desire in my heart that my options are not limited.” Through Popular Paws, Underwood and Mayer try to encourage others to give back in any way they can. “You can play a big part in the world in a small way,” Mayer says. “$20 or $30 is two meals in Dallas but could feed a child for week.” —EmiLy

NINE WALKS SAUVIGNON BLANC NEW ZEALAND

Wine is complicated enough, what with all of the different kinds of wine and all of the different places in the world where wine is made. So what does the wine business do to make wine even more complicated? Invent wine terms, giving it language all its own.

This is troublesome for anyone who likes wine, experienced or not. Even today, after two-plus decades of doing this, I’ll read a wine description and have no idea what it means. So you can imagine the difficulty wine-speak gives beginners.

How to get around this problem? One way is to stop by the Wine Garden at the State Fair of Texas between Sept. 30 and Oct. 23, where The Two Wine Guys, John Bratcher and myself, will speak again this year. We’ll be at the wine stage Monday through Thursday at 1, 3 and 5 p.m., and will be happy to answer any questions.

The best way? Taste wine, and learn the differences:

Many California red wines, like Toad Hollow’s Erik The Red ($15) are fruity, which some wine drinkers often confuse with sweetness. Think of a sweet wine, like riesling, as iced tea with lemon and sugar. Think of fruity wine as the tea with just lemon. The latter is fruity (the taste of the lemon) but not sweet. Does the wine pair easily with food? If so, and if it doesn’t overwhelm the taste of the food, then it’s food friendly. Usually, but not always, food friendly wines have more simple, straightforward flavors, such as a New Zealand sauvignon blanc like Nine Walks ($10). Drink this with summer salads, roast chicken or boiled seafood, and the wine complements the food, which is about as friendly as you can get.

Wineries release a new vintage every year, which is the current vintage. But what happens when retailers haven’t been able to sell all of the previous year’s current vintage? It becomes the previous vintage, and retailers cut prices to get rid of those wines to make room for the current vintage. It’s not unlike what car dealers do — cut prices on last year’s models to make room for the new models. The Australian red blend Pillar Box Red 2008 used to be $12 or $13; you can find it these days, since it’s a previous vintage, for as little as $10.

WITH YOUR WINE

Couscous jambalaya

Couscous, which is actually pasta and not a grain, is usually thought of as a side dish. But taking this approach turns it into an easy main course — and you can use up almost any leftover vegetable or chicken in the refrigerator (the amounts in the recipe for those items are suggestions; this is something you can make your own). Serve any white, food-friendly wine with it.

Serves 4-6, takes 30 minutes

3 Tbsp olive oil

3 c couscous

4 1/2 c chicken or vegetable stock

3 cloves garlic, chopped

1 onion, chopped

1/2 bell pepper chopped

1 stalk celery, chopped

salt and pepper to taste

4-6 c cooked chicken, shrimp, sausage, or beef

1.Place the olive oil in a large saucepan and warm over medium heat. When it’s hot, add the onion, bell pepper and celery, and sauté until the onions are soft, 5 or 6 minutes. Add the garlic and couscous and mix well, coating the couscous with the oil.

2. Add the chicken or other meat and stir. Add the stock and salt and pepper and mix well.

3.Bring to a boil. When it’s boiling, cover, turn the heat to low, and let the couscous steam for 7 to 10 minutes. It should be moist but not soupy.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A GRAPE VARIETAL AND A GRAPE VARIETY?

Nothing, really. Varietal is the more technical term for the grape variety.

What makes an Advocate pet edition model?

It is not necessarily impeccable breeding or a pretty mug but, rather, a personality — a certain je ne sais quoi — that jumps off the page. Our 2011 model pet search garnered piles of adorable photos and amusing anecdotes. These finalists are the non-human neighborhood residents that most captured our hearts.

Diego the YouTube star

That’s not a pig, that’s Diego.

The pudgy-nosed French bulldog was mistaken for such last Halloween by a 3-year-oldtrick-or-treaterwhoseemed to recognize the species of Diego’s pal, Giorgie, a Yorkshire terrier.

“When the boy turned to leave, he said, ‘Bye,doggie.Bye,piggie.’Hethought Diego was a pig.”

Diego’sowner,BradBehringerof NorthavenPark, doesn’t mind the mixup — it just makes his dog all the more special. That, and the fact that Diego can speak. Not bark — speak. YouTube videos catch him in the moment, trying to mimic his human’s voice saying “I love you.”

“He has been doing it since we brought him home.”

Behringerandhisfiancée,Diana, wanted a friend for their 6-year-old yorkie, Giorgie. So, almost two years ago, they traveled to Terrell to visit a French bulldog breeder. Diego was the sole survivor of his litter and came with a few complications. He’s smaller than normal and was born with an umbilical hernia, which caused a large and dangerous bubble to grow on his stomach.

“We couldn’t leave with him,” Behringer says.

After a nail-biting five months, Diego was old enough for surgery to fix the hernia. Now he deals with chronic allergies and must receive a shot once a week. But Diego’s health issues have never dampened his spirits.

Tex Ting while driving is a sin

HOW WE DrIvE SPEA kS v OLumES ABO uT WHO WE ArE

Honestly, I couldn’t believe my eyes.

I was heading south at the intersection of Preston and Forest on my way to my office, stopped at the light. An ambulance was making its way north to the intersection, weaving its way between stopped cars, lights flashing and siren wailing. It was obviously on its way to some dire emergency.

Arriving at the intersection, the ambulance began to edge out to proceed through the red light. Ordinarily, I would expect the east-west drivers to stop and let the emergency vehicle go through; however, it didn’t happen. The westbound drivers had the left-turn green light. They had to see and hear the ambulance, but apparently they were all in a hurry on their own personal emergencies, and one by one, no less than six cars passed in front of the screaming ambulance, not one stopping to let it pass.

I found myself wondering what that scene said about human nature. Were they that uncaring and thoughtless? Were they oblivious? After all, that ambulance could have been on its way to one of their own aging parents, who had just suffered a heart attack. It could have been on its way to an accident involving their own teenage children. But chances were that it was not, and so I had to assume that since the need wasn’t personal, it didn’t matter to those westbound drivers.

I hope I’m wrong, but I found any other interpretation difficult to believe.

I usually don’t use my column to vent, but I am this month. I find it difficult to like the drivers of North Dallas. I find them astonishingly selfish. With alarming frequency, I witness drivers cutting off other cars, turning without bothering with turn signals (that’s a favorite pet peeve of mine), paying little attention to their driving while engrossed in a cell phone conversation, and that most dangerous of all vehicular sins — texting while driving. Speed limits have become theoretical. Okay, I am venting. I know it.

As a minister and preacher, I talk a lot about love. I talk about kindness and gentleness and humility, which I believe to be basic attributes

of the faith I embrace. And I’m happy to say that I know a lot of genuinely kind people — people who regularly go out of their way to help others.

But I have come to the conclusion that what kind of person we are — to my tribe, what kind of Christian we are — becomes most evident behind the wheel of a car.

I love the story of the driver who was angrily blowing her horn at the elderly person in front

of her who had missed a green light. Banging on her steering wheel and using unusual hand gestures, she was obviously beside herself. A police officer pulled her over.

“What did I do? I wasn’t speeding,” she asked the officer. The officer explained that no, she wasn’t speeding.

“I saw the way you were acting,” he said, “and then I saw the ‘I Love Jesus’ sticker on your car, and I thought the car was stolen.”

Enough said. It may be that the way you drive says more about you than the creed you profess.

Now I’ve said it, and I feel so much better.

The Dallas Heritage Village junior historians group, volunteers ages 11 to 18, recently redesigned the doctor’s office exhibit at the “living history museum” south of Downtown. After researching and exploring the drugs carried in the pharmacy and the medical instruments of the past, they unveiled their work this summer. Pictured outside the doctor’s office are junior historian and Preston Hollow resident g race Enda with her father, Steve.

Speaking for the voicele SS

Preston Hollow resident Suzy c ox was sworn in as a volunteer with Dallas CASA (Court-Appointed Special Advocates) in the 304th District Court, Judge b ill m azur presiding. Through the local nonprofit, Cox will serve as a voice for abused and neglected children caught up in the court system. “I decided to get involved hoping to make a life-changing difference in the life of a child,” Cox says. “I want to help those who can’t speak for themselves reach their fullest potential.”

She texted that her credit card S had been canceled.

Stacy Sims had a quick errand to run at the church she attends in her neighborhood. She wheeled into the parking lot and ran inside. Sims is usually good about hiding or removing any valuables, but this time left her purse behind and locked the doors. She was at church, after all, and was not gone more than three minutes.

the Victim: Stacy Sims

the crime: burglary of a motor vehicle

date: tuesday, June 21

time: 9:20 a.m.

ture through neighborhoods and parking lots and ultimately Walmart before I wiped the data. the iphone has some interesting features to use in this sort of situation, but you are also putting yourself at risk because they can hack into the phone until you wipe the data.”

Sims, who runs a portrait photography business, cancelled her credit cards and decided to at least disappoint the crook by letting him know that further attempts to use them would be for nothing.

?of the Month

A: it has been one year since the dPd launched iWatch dallas, a system that allows neighbors to send police text messages about suspicious activity to 274637 rather than calling 911. Some neighbors embraced it while others weren’t terribly enthused. What have been the measurable results so far?

When she returned, Sims knew she made the wrong choice. Window glass was shattered on the driver’s side, and her purse, wallet and Apple iphone were all missing — a loss of more than $1,500.

“It was a shame-on-me lesson,” she says. “I should have known better — especially since my father-in-law is a retired Dallas police officer.”

the burglary surprised her because it happened at a church. However, Sims quickly went into action to minimize the damage and even tracked the thief’s early movements using her stolen cell phone.

“It was interesting because we watched the guys via satellite on their shopping spree via the church computers using my stolen iphone on Apple’s mobile me service,” she says. “It didn’t do us any good, but was interesting to watch the phone ven-

location: 69200 block of inwood 1

“I sent them a message via my phone telling them my cards were canceled, and I kept locking the phone remotely,” she adds.

Dallas police Lt. richard Dwyer of the North Central patrol Division says to always lock cars and take or hide all valuables no matter where you are. A reverence for God or the afterlife is not enough to dissuade a criminal from breaking the law on church grounds.

“Offenses occur at churches here in the North Central division occasionally,” he says. “In other parts of the city, smaller neighborhood churches that cannot afford an alarm system can have three or four offenses a year.”

Simple steps can deter criminals from breaking in a car.

“Common sense would say if you had two locked cars parked next to each other, but only had time to break into one car in order to get away, which one would you choose? You would choose the vehicle that you can see has something potentially more valuable than the other car.” —Sean
