SNAP JUDGMENT

I knew that the woman who owns the three-story, multimillion-dollar closet in Houston was an idiot, especially when it was reported that a thief made off with $1 million in luxury goods from her closet one evening. My opinion was confirmed when I saw her crying on TV after the theft; her lips seemed a little artificially plump to me.

Same with whoever decided to bring a couple of Americans with Ebola to Atlanta to treat them — what kind of American brings people with an incredibly contagious disease into our country, risking the health of the rest of us? The 30-second clip didn’t go into details, but I don’t have time to think about Ebola longer than that anyway.

How about Beyonce’s sister, who started beating on Jay-Z in that elevator video clip? He was just standing there looking at her, so she must have been drunk or on drugs or just messed up. The video was kind of grainy, but I could see enough to decide.

That football player, Ray Rice, who turned up on hotel security cameras dragging his girlfriend (now wife) out of a hotel elevator when she appeared to be unconscious? What a bozo. He looked pretty guilty in that black-and-white video.

And the NFL commissioner who only suspended Rice for two games — when that other player who was smoking marijuana was kicked out for a whole year I mean, what was the commissioner thinking? I could tell all I needed to know from the TV news report teaser — there’s no question Rice should be spending time in prison instead of cooling his heels for a couple of Sundays.

That’s the greatest thing about life these days. Thanks to TV news, internet video clips and 10-second sound bites, it’s really easy to condemn, hate, repudiate and dismiss people I’ve never met and never talked with, all based on a few seconds of video or a single photo (celebrities without makeup!) or someone’s 140-character Twitter post.

It’s so much easier to be judgmental now. I don’t have to get my hands dirty with newsprint or books, and I don’t have to depend on friends telling me how to think. Thanks to the internet, I can think on my own and draw conclusions in just a couple of seconds.

Oscar Pistorius? Guilty! Vladimir Putin? Scary! Congress? Dummies!

There’s no longer any need to understand the background of an issue. No need to spend time researching complicated stories. No reason to consider what others with first-hand information about situations might have to say — I can be the judge, jury and executioner without breaking a sweat, leaving my home or even having any real knowledge about what I’m talking about.

And if I’m really lucky, I can take care of all of my thinking before breakfast while watching the morning news on TV.

Thank you, Al Gore, for inventing the internet. You should really run for office someday and straighten out those guys in Washington!

TALK
THE DIALOGUE

A lifelong athlete, Patty Heitz found herself sidelined by shoulder problems. She went to her local Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas when pain lingered after rotator cuff surgery at another hospital. Tests revealed a serious staph infection that went all the way into the bone. Surgery to remove the affected bone and tissue plus antibiotic implants and injections cleared the way for a reverse shoulder replacement procedure. She regained full motion in the affected shoulder, but twinges of pain in the other shoulder sent her back to Baylor Dallas for a second rotator cuff surgery. With both shoulders back on track, Patty returned to the course. “Now if I don’t play well,” she jokes, “I can’t blame it on my shoulders.”

The more you know

Local podcasters share their intellectual curiosities about life’s burning questions

When Virginia Traweek stumbles across an interesting, obscure book — on topics ranging from current events to algebra II — she devours it like a proper nerd.

Then she tracks down the author. “There’s a trick to it,” she says. “I send them an email and point out the specific things I liked about the book. Then I ask politely if they’ll come on the podcast.”

The Disney Streets resident and her friends, Leland Flynn and Nick Sainz, have recorded more than 100 episodes of “Nerd Absurd” from a makeshift studio inside Sainz’s family printing shop in Northwest Dallas. The hobby has made them “negative amounts of money,” but it gives them an excuse to Skype with their favorite authors and thinkers from around the country.

“I just want to talk to people who are interesting,” Traweek says.

Recent guests have included former FBI negotiator Gary Noesner, who wrote “Stalling for Time: My Life as an FBI Hostage Negotiator” and author Alfie Kohn, who discussed his book “The Myth of the Spoiled Child: Challenging the Conventional Wisdom about Children and Parenting.”

Their audience is minimal, comprising 40-50 people within the Dallas Makerspace community where Traweek, Sainz and Flynn met and began the podcast in 2011. It started as “us having a discussion with ourselves and hoping others find it interesting,” Flynn says.

As the podcast title suggests, topics tend toward the nerdy — mostly academic subjects outside the radar of mainstream media consumers.

“It doesn’t jump to the front page of Reddit,” Sainz says.

Aside from interviewing guests, the group discusses social issues and current events (gender roles, the Ebola outbreak, the Comcast/Netflix deal, electric cars, etc.) as well as some offbeat topics like becoming a homeowner, the best ways to handle embarrassing situations and the important differences between a nerd and a geek. But guests make for the most interesting conversations. A show featuring best-selling author James Altucher drew about 14,000 listeners.

Traweek plans to bring on more guests. Right now, she hopes to get John M. Barry, who authored “The Great Influenza: The Epic Story of the Deadliest Plague in History,” and she’s looking for the partner of a now deceased author who wrote the out-of-print math book “Whole Craft of a Number,” back in the 1970s. Traweek ran across the book online and says it explains the applications of algebra to laypeople.

A favorite and repeat guest is David Lankes, a Syracuse University professor known as a “library visionary.” Traweek, Sainz and Flynn geek out when Lankes talks about the future of libraries — no, they aren’t dying; they simply need to evolve as places that help the public access and share information.

You could say that “Nerd Absurd” has a similar mission.

When not recording at least once a week, Sainz is a graphic designer, Flynn has an IT business, and Traweek writes and speaks about senior housing.

“We can go about our lives and still have this window into another world,” Traweek says. —Emily Toman

Ziziki’s, named for its signature Greek tzatziki sauce served alongside its souvlakis, gyros and salads, is nearing its 10th year at Preston and Forest. Like the playful take on the tricky traditional spelling of its namesake yogurt sauce, the fare at Ziziki’s includes the best of traditional Greek favorites — dolmades, souvlakis and mousaka — with a twist. Take the classic lamb gyros, for instance: they’re made with lamb, but Australian, organic, free-range lamb, which has a mild, less gamey flavor than the domestic variety. The cheese board includes French feta, which owners Mary and Costa Arabatzis prefer to the firmer Greek feta. For Costa, who also is executive chef, perfecting authentic Greek recipes began at an early age. Growing up, Costa would come home from school and help his grandmother bake homemade baklava. Though lacking professional culinary training, Costa has since perfected his family recipes and cooking technique at restaurants all over the country, including The Crescent. “The menu has changed quite a bit since we first opened,” Mary says. “At first, it was just chicken and lamb. Now we’ve added fish and the meat and cheese board.” And there are more playful additions on the horizon. Of course, the crowd-pleasing artichoke hummus dip is sticking around, but a new weekend brunch menu is beginning to draw a crowd all its own. From 11 a.m.-3 p.m. brunch items such as blueberry, lemon and thyme pancakes, and a Greek omelet with feta cheese and Kalamata olives marry the best of American and Greek cuisine. At dinner, sip on Fix 1864, a Greek lager, or Kyklos Moschofilero, a Greek white wine, refreshing yet acidic enough to hold up to all of that flavorful grilled meat.

Cindi’s NY Deli

As part of Advocate’s yearlong best-of reader’s choice contest, we asked you to choose your favorite breakfast/brunch joint in the neighborhood, and Cindi’s NY Deli (11111 N. Central) came out on top. That’s likely because there’s a little something for everyone on the menu: from Southern favorites such as chicken-fried steak and eggs, to the bagel with lox, a New York deli staple. Plus, breakfast is served until closing time at 9 p.m., so you can come back later to try those cheese blintzes if you run out of room in the morning. Cindi’s owner Anh Vo, along with her husband and newborn baby, came to the United States as political refugees from Vietnam back in the 1970s and spoke no English. Vo told us in January 2012 that she knew nothing about Jewish food before opening Cindi’s in 1989 but “learned everything I could.” And it doesn’t hurt to have dedicated cooks who have stuck around since the beginning.

AnimAlPeoPle

And their people animals

WE CALL THEM PETS — those creatures who cohabitate and bond with humans. They tend to love their person, even one who is crotchety or crazy. Dogs don’t judge—they evidently love doctors and pastors, evil dictators and lunatics the same. Each summer, in anticipation of the September issue, we ask readers to tell us about their pets. Then editors are deluged with emails and letters. The photos are striking and funny. The stories, heartwarming. Your love of your pets is evident and something to which animal people in every cul-

ture and community can relate. While pets are no substitute for human relationships, they do offer a sort of unparalleled, unshakable and near-mystic camaraderie. Writer-naturalist Henry Beston explained it eloquently when he wrote, “They are more finished and complete [than us], gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings; they are other Nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time.”

ON THESE PAGES

You will find a cross-section of the pets that populate our neighborhood. To see submitted photos and anecdotes not featured here, watch the Advocate’s Pet Pause section, which appears near the front of the magazine most months and features our neighborhood’s most photogenic pets.

Story by Emily Toman // Photos by Kim Leeson

LADY a boy’s saving grace

HER THICK, 8-FOOT-LONG TAIL brushes the ground as she exits the stall, towering over her human, 13-year-old Jake Carrell. The glowing chestnut mare and “love of his life” stands more than 16 hands high. On this hot morning in July, she’s stamping her hooves into the ground, raring to go. Jake gently strokes her snout.

“She’s feisty but calm when I ride her,” he says.

Clearly, Jake still is in awe of Lady after more than a year since becoming her owner. He always has felt a special connection with animals, including his dog, Trigger, his fish tank full of African cichlids and his late hamster, Bandit. He devours books on animal-related subjects and wants to become a veterinarian.

As he walks Lady around in small circles, he searches for just the right words to describe the admiration and respect he has for these creatures that roam the earth alongside us.

“It’s something else that’s alive besides humans,” he explains.

And when faced with the notion of death, Jake turned to horses.

The summer before second grade, he arrived home from camp to the news that his mother, Mary-Elizabeth, was dying of an inoperable brain tumor. The doctors had given her two to five years.

Jake was too young to understand what that meant but knew it was serious because his older brother was crying.

As his mom underwent treatment and fought for her life, Jake became more and more obsessed with getting a horse.

“He asked, and he asked, and he asked,” Mary-Elizabeth says. “He was really patient. He started asking once a week instead of every day.”

Although dizzy and weak from radiation, she felt well enough to pick Jake up from school one day. He politely reminded her about the horse. So, she finally made a move.

“I said, ‘Why don’t we go over there now?’ ”

She drove Jake to the Park Lane Equestrian Center, where he began riding and never stopped.

“Through all that radiation and recovery, he’d be riding. That was his escape.”

Four years later Lady came into his life from Chicago. He rides her twice a week and plans to compete in shows this season.

Mary-Elizabeth survived her battle with cancer. The tumor shrank to an “insignificant” size, the doctors say, but they still watch it. She receives an MRI every four months.

Still, she had plenty of time to reflect on what would happen to her family had she not lived.

“Jake was so happy when he was on the back of a horse,” she says. “I could just sit and watch him for 45 minutes. I thought, ‘If I die, my life is pretty good.’ It gave me a peace that he’s going to be OK.”

LIBERTY

The stray from afghanistan

LIFE ISN’T EASY FOR STRAY DOGS in war-torn Afghanistan, where they often are abused for dogfighting and other cruel games.

“They hate dogs over there,” says Linda Brooks, a Preston Hollow resident who works with Puppy Rescue Mission to save the dogs from such a fate. “When a [U.S.] solider finds a puppy, they say, ‘This reminds me of home.’ ”

Soldiers aren’t allowed to keep strays on base (they sometimes hide the pups in their sleeping bags), so volunteers like Brooks organize the transport of the dogs to the United States for the troops to adopt when they return home.

Liberty was scared and malnourished when she turned up in a litter in Wardack, Afghanistan. She arrived in the States in October 2012 under Brooks’ foster care. The soldier Liberty was waiting for returned, but medical issues prevented him from adopting her. So Brooks kept her, along with her retired therapy dog, Simon, who made regular visits with military veterans at the Dallas Veterans Affairs. That’s where Brooks learned about Puppy Rescue Mission.

The national nonprofit organization launched four years ago after a group of dogs on a U.S. post in Afghanistan alerted soldiers to a suicide bomber, thus saving their lives. One of the dogs, Sasha, died in the attack. Shortly thereafter, as bonds began to form among the soldiers and the dogs, one of the soldiers’ fiancés, Anna Cannan, raised money to bring the pups home. The effort extended from there, and Puppy Rescue Mission has saved 460 dogs in four years.

PETUNIA THE POT-BELLIED TALK OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD

THE FIRST THING ONE MIGHT NOTICE about Petunia the pig, as she snoozes the day away on the living room sofa, is that she doesn’t stink. That’s one of the biggest misconceptions about the messy farm animal-turned adorable pet.

“They don’t have sweat glands,” says her owner, Weezie Margolis. “[On farms] they roll around in the mud to keep cool.”

Margolis never has been much of a cat or dog person. Plus, her husband is allergic to both.

“So, I got a pig instead,” she says.

And, a star was born.

On a typical afternoon walk down Meadow Road, drivers slow down and make U-turns to get another glimpse of the Vietnamese teacup potbelly strutting her stuff. Some people even step out and snap photos with her.

“It’s still somewhat of a novelty,” Margolis says.

Petunia was just 1 pound, 11 ounces when Margolis brought her home. Today, she’s 4 years old and 100 pounds. She eats a steady diet of salads and inhales pecans during the fall (do not get between Petunia and her nuts).

Since pigs are some of the smartest animals on the planet, raising one is no easy task.

“It’s like having a 3-year-old in the house,” Margolis says.

She has defied baby gates and opened kitchen cabinets. If someone’s purse is within reach, she holds it down with one hoof and unzips it with her snout to gobble up whatever treats lie inside.

But it’s worth all the trouble, Margolis says.

“They say a dog is a man’s best friend. I think a pig is very much the same.”

LUCILLE AN OLD GIRL WITH A SPARK

SHE USED TO BE CALLED LUCY. But when her jet-black face began showing flecks of gray, the 14-year-old Labrador/ blue heeler mix took on a more mature, distinguished moniker: Lucille.

“She’s such a grandma,” says her owner, Allison Thomas. “It just seems to go with her look.”

Lucille has been there for just about every significant life event: Thomas’ marriage to her husband, Scott, three moves around North Dallas and the birth of their now-7-year-old son, Hudson.

Before Lucille came along, Thomas “was never really a dog person,” she says. Then one day, an acquaintance found a 6-week-old stray puppy in a Blockbuster parking lot.

“He brought her over, and there was no way we could turn her down,” says Thomas, who was living in a townhouse with Scott, her fiancé at the time. “We just had to take her in.”

There was a bit of a learning curve, but Thomas fell in love with Lucille in about a month. These days, Lucille is “getting up

TRUMAN AND OLIVER SNUGGLE BUDS

there,” but she hasn’t lost her spark.

“You can see the gradual decline,” Thomas says, but “she still has a lot of puppy in her. Her body can’t keep up with her personality.”

She loves car rides and gets overcome with excitement, but Thomas now has to pick her up and put her in the car.

“It makes me sad, because she used to jump on in,” Thomas says.

Despite the aches and pains, the senior life is a good one. Lucille eats an early dinner and retires to her “happy place” on the edge of Thomas’ bed by 8 p.m.

When Thomas’ 71-year-old mother stays over in the guest bedroom, Lucille is by her side.

“We call it the senior lounge,” Thomas says. “She loves it when my mom is here. She takes comfort in being with my mom.”

Lucille is healthy for an older dog, but Thomas knows the day will come when her pup is no longer waiting for her in the chaise lounge near the front door.

“I’ll miss her greeting me,” she says. “The happiness in her. All her sounds and smells — you get used to certain things about your pet. I can’t picture my home without her in it. Maybe we just have to move.”

WHEN A FLUFFY ORANGE RABBIT wandered into Martha Justice Moore’s friend’s yard a few months ago, an unlikely friendship formed.

Moore took in the bunny, which “clearly was someone’s pet,” she says, because he’s friendly and approaches everyone including Moore’s 1-year-old English sheepdog, Truman.

“The rabbit is not afraid of him, and he’s not afraid of the rabbit,” she says.

In fact, they play and snuggle on the regular.

“It’s quite entertaining. I’ve never seen that before,” she says. “[Truman] licks him and grooms him. He’s parenting him.”

Moore took the rabbit, which her family named Oliver, to the vet, who agreed that he was a high-end $50 pet. She posted signs around the neighborhood, but no one claimed him. So Oliver is taking up residence with Truman and with Moore’s sons, who are 9 and 11.

“He wants to be around people,” she says. “If the boys sit down by his bed, the bunny will come over and sit right next to them.”

A lesson before dying

A teen leaves behind a cancer-fighting foundation and a manual on how to treat the terminally ill

26 prestonhollow.advocatemag.com SEPTEMBER 2014
Story by Emily Toman | Photos by Danny Fulgencio

OnJan. 12, 2010, Carson Leslie was in hospice care, practicing his signature.

Six days earlier, the 17-year-old had published a book, “Carry Me,” chronicling his experience with cancer, and he was preparing to greet admiriers at his book signing in a few days.

At 3 a.m., after receiving an emergency blood transfusion at the hospital, Carson sat in the family room of his Preston Hollow home with his parents, Craig and Annette, and his older brother, “Craig T.” They were laughing at an episode of “Family Guy” on TV.

Annette left the room to take out her contact lenses, but Carson stopped her and said, “Mama, come sit next to me.” Annette replied that she’d be right back, but he insisted. Annette sat down on the sofa next to her son, whom she had watched wither before her eyes during three years of painful radiation and chemotherapy that proved unsuccessful. She fed him a pill and a small piece of bread.

Moments later Carson lowered his head and died.

“It was so sad,” Annette recalls through tears, almost at a loss for any other words to describe the day she knew would come. “I lived my greatest fear.”

Within four hours of Carson’s death, doctors removed the tumor that engulfed his brain and spine and shipped it to Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, where researchers injected it into mice. The tumor kept growing.

It remains alive today at Texas Tech University Health Science Center in Lubbock, aiding in one of three studies

throughout the state to develop less-toxic treatments for pediatric cancer.

At the end of a patient’s life, doctors typically ask if the family wants an autopsy. Carson made his wishes clear long before the subject arose — “Make sure they study those tumors.”

Just months after his death, Annette launched the Carson Leslie Foundation to leverage donations toward specific studies carefully selected by a research board of doctors, including Carson’s oncologist. The mission is about more than the seemingly insurmountable goal of curing cancer; it’s also about bettering the lives of the estimated 10,450 children expected to be diagnosed by the end of this year, according to statistics from the American Cancer Society.

Recently the foundation secured a $3.2 million partnership with the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, which is helping fund studies to find better treatments with fewer side effects.

Annette fills her time building relationships in the medical community, increasing awareness and planning local fundraisers. She even played a role at the political level, speaking at the Washington, D.C., home of U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul (a St. Mark’s School alumnus) to help kick off the bipartisan childhood cancer caucus that spurred the bill known as “The Creating Hope Act,” which incentivizes pharmaceutical companies to devote more efforts to cancer drugs for children.

“I can’t bring him back,” Annette says. “For me, it’s the way I grieve. I’ve always been a woman of action.”

A photo of Carson Leslie, B.C. (before cancer, to which these pictures are often referred) adorns the entryway of the family’s Preston Hollow home.

Carson spent all of his brief life in Preston Hollow. As a baby he yearned for affection, his father, Craig, recalls.

“He always wanted to be held,” he says. “He was much different than his older brother, who was an easy baby, more independent.”

Carson lived and breathed sports, especially baseball. His dad coached both of the boys’ peewee teams at the Town North YMCA, and Carson became competitive as early as 5 years old. He wanted to play and win.

In his book, Carson describes himself as a “stud.” Adorning the entryway of the Leslie home is a large, black-and-white photo of Carson at the beach. He stands shirtless, shaggy-haired and confident.

In the early fall of 2006, Carson was a 14-year-old freshman at the Covenant School of Dallas, busy with two-a-day football practices. By November, doctors were cutting into his skull in an attempt to remove the malignant tumors that already had taken over his brain and spine. Carson wrote about the day he learned the word “oncology”: “I didn’t know oncology meant cancer, but my parents did. I did not know to cry Today, I know a lot about the word oncology: I know how the word feels, smells and tastes. It is a word I wish I still did not know.”

Naturally, he hated his oncologist, Dr. Daniel Bowers, at first. Annette avoided him as long as she could.

“I felt like he was a used-car salesman,” she says. “Every time I turned around he was walking toward the room. I wouldn’t let him in. I didn’t want to believe that it was really cancer.”

Bowers explains that Carson’s type of cancer, medulloblastoma, has a high survival rate of 75-80 percent and in most cases, doctors treat it with “everything but the kitchen sink,” attacking the tumor with as much radiation and chemotherapy the body can take.

While ill, Carson spent much of his time inspiring others and tending to his bucket list. He met celebrities and athletes (he formed a special relationship with the Rangers’ Michael Young), traveled to wild lands, saw his school’s stadium named after him and became a published author. But in those first moments, hearing the words that changed everything, he reacted like any fal-

lible human being would.

“He turned over in his bed and just wept and wept and wept,” Annette says. He wouldn’t open his eyes, he wouldn’t talk, he wouldn’t eat. The doctors became concerned. Finally, his brother Craig T. — whom he called “Bub” — walked into the room with a cardboard cut-out of Derek Jeter and told him he’d better get up and start fighting because he was going to meet his baseball hero.

By the beginning of 2008, Carson went into remission. His hair grew back, and he returned to school.

“I was convinced that he was cured,” Bowers says.

Medulloblastoma returns in about 20 percent of patients who survive. For nearly a year, each of Carson’s routine brain scans came back clean. Until one didn’t. Doctors spotted crumbles of medulloblastoma up and down his spine and, after a couple of last-ditch treatments failed, including a stint

at St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, the Leslie family ran out of options. In June 2009, another brain scan revealed the tumor had grown.

“We could tell by the way Dr. Bowers walked into the room,” Annette says. “It looked like he had been hit by 17 trucks.”

Although Bowers has good relationships with all his patients, Carson was special, he says. They saw each other almost daily, and Bowers always made sure he’d read the sports section, because when they weren’t talking about cancer they were talking about sports.

The final diagnosis hit Bowers hard.

“It was very much out of the blue,” he says. “It’s the most awful thing that I do. Tumors are smart. That’s the most frustrating part of the job. Over time, they build up resistance to treatment.”

Through it all, Carson never complained or got angry with Bowers. The oncologist he

once hated — who came bearing the worst possible news — became one of his best friends. Bowers recalls a moment the two shared near the end, when Carson knew he was dying.

“I could tell Carson was very quiet and thinking about it. And then he said to me, ‘I just want to tell you I love you.’ No patient has ever said that.”

Inschool, Carson had always been more of a math-and-science kid. When he received an English assignment to write about his experience with cancer, Annette called Pat Gordon, a family friend who had been Craig T’s English teacher at Covenant. She agreed to come over to the house and tutor Carson.

Gordon describes herself as the Dictaphone to Carson’s writing process. Their oneon-one meetings became a form of therapy in which she prepared a list of topics and asked Carson questions about each. Inspired by the structure of Sandra Cisneros’ “The House on Mango Street,” each topic became a chapter of Carson’s book — “Waiting Rooms,” “Birthdays,” “Friendship 101.”

Carson spoke, and Gordon typed.

“He was a deep-souled boy,” she says. “He really started to appreciate the written word. He understood language and its transformative qualities.” Most people don’t think about the time they have on earth, Gordon says, but the immediacy of Carson’s life could not be ignored. He shared with her the loneliness of having cancer. After a while, people stop coming around, and their lives move on. They don’t know how to treat someone who’s dying; they only see the death.

“We’ve singled it out,” Gordon says. “You have to look at the whole person. Death is part of the human experience. You don’t have to have words; you just have to show up.”

Every single day for three years after Carson’s death, Annette walked from her home across the street to visit his memorial bench at Sparkman Hillcrest. It sits under a large oak tree, facing a picturesque pond and gazebo. A tattered baseball rests in a groove of the

tree trunk. The bench is engraved with Carson’s favorite Bible verse, Joshua 1:9: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Now, Annette allows herself to visit only once a week. She brings with her a damp paper towel to clean the bench of dust and debris. She kisses the edge of the bench, and wipes it clean again because, she says, Carson hated her lipstick smudges.

All the while, she can’t get the words out of her head: “Mama, I thought I was gonna make it.”

Fulfilling her promise to Carson through the Carson Leslie Foundation is what helps her heal. Bowers, an associate professor at UT Southwestern, still spends most of his workday trying to outsmart the tumors that killed Carson and continue to kill 1 in 5 children diagnosed with cancer.

Gordon now serves as the director of rhetoric at Covenant. Her brief time with Carson taught her to listen more and ask better questions of her students. She still teaches one senior English class, centered on the theme, “What does it mean to be an authentic human being?”

The search for a cancer cure will go on, and on, but amid all the colored bracelets and Make-a-Wish moments, Carson left the world with something else that’s often overlooked: a manual for how to treat others.

He wrote about this in a June 29, 2009, entry titled “Blessings,” shortly after he received his final diagnosis.

“I’m not writing this book to bring awareness to children’s cancer, but to give insight on how to treat others who are battling crippling diseases such as cancer. Share your blessings — no matter how small.”

BUSINESS BUZZ

The lowdown on what’s up with neighborhood businesses

Send business news tips to livelocal@ advocatemag.com

Kel’s Kitchen closes

One of our neighborhood dining institutions is no more. Kel’s Kitchen closed in early August. Owner Johnny Meredith recently had struggled to keep the restaurant open, hoping a new buyer would take over. A deal never materialized, the Dallas Morning News reported. Some loyal patrons dined at Kel’s, off Inwood and Forest, almost daily. The restaurant had been open since 1963.

Modmarket coming to Preston Hollow Village

We now know at least one of the tenants moving into Preston Hollow Village, the high-profile development under construction at the northwest corner of Walnut Hill and Central. Teresa Gubbins at CultureMap reports that the Coloradobased restaurant chain Modmarket will take up residence there along with three other locations in Dallas. The healthcentered restaurant avoids preservatives and artificial sweeteners, and it keeps ingredient lists short, simple and clean. It also prints nutritional information on each meal receipt. Beth Hardy, a publicist for Modmarket, says that they aim to open at Walnut Hill and Central early next year. Trader Joe’s is slated to open there next month.

Two new private schools in Preston Hollow

The new Primrose School of Preston Hollow is now enrolling. The school specializes in early childhood education, using its own philosophy known as the Balanced Learning System, which focuses on cognitive, emotional and physical development, drawing from models such as Montessori, Gesell and Piaget. Headquartered in Georgia, Primrose has schools all over the country, mostly in suburban areas. Each branch, however, keeps things local. Dallas resident and SMU graduate Julia Shelton owns the Preston Hollow school, on Preston just southwest of Royal.

Fusion Academy, a private, for-profit, college-prep middle and high school, opened its first two locations in Texas last month — one of which is at The Shops at Park Lane. The school offers classes year-round, using a one-to-one model of instruction. Students also have access to tutoring, a homework center and therapeutic services. But all of that oneto-one attention comes with a cost: Full-time tuition runs around $35,000-$42,000 a year per student.

OUR PETS, OURSELVES

How animal companions challenge us to live our best lives

“Apprehend God in all things, for God is in all things. Every single creature is full of God and is a book about God. Every creature is a word of God. If I spent enough time with the tiniest creature, even a caterpillar, I would never have to prepare a sermon. So full of God is every creature.”

I named my first dog in the deli section of the Preston Royal Tom Thumb when I was 5 years old. We were adopting a beagle puppy (probably because of Snoopy). My mom had been bugging me to think of a name, but nothing was coming to mind.

So, we stopped at the grocery store bakery for a brownie and milk. Sitting there, enjoying my brownie, it dawned on me just how much I loved them. Brownies, that is. And so I called my first dog “Brownie.”

The memories we carry of our pets last a lifetime. In my years as a kid here in Preston Hollow, we had a whole zoo of animals: a dog, a cat, a turtle, fish (both in a bowl and an aquarium), numerous hamsters and three consecutive guinea pigs named “Charlie.”

The backyards of Preston Hollow generally are larger than those of many Dallas neighborhoods, making the area a wonderful place for people and their pets.

Flash forward to just a few years ago. Our church began doing an annual “Blessing of the Animals.” It’s always the first Sunday afternoon of November on the lawn outside the building. Folks bring all sorts of animals to be blessed by myself and members of our pastoral staff.

I must confess that I was skeptical of the

event at first. But to my surprise, we had a nice turnout of furry friends and their people. And everybody, human and otherwise, behaved themselves.

Then came a year when our own dog, Grace, became very sick. She was 13, and she had cancer and several other problems. We brought her to the “Blessing of the Animals,” knowing it would be her last one. I gingerly lifted her out of the car. I asked other members of the staff to do the blessing for her, and I stood there blubbering. It was a surprising and unexpectedly strong reaction.

But it reminded me of the truth that we often are very close to our pets. They travel with us through life’s ups and downs. They

We often are very close to our pets. They travel with us through life’s ups and downs. They often mirror our own emotional ups and downs, too.

often mirror our own emotional ups and downs, too. Our current dog, Daisy, is masterful at being able to lift us out of a funk just through her sunny disposition.

There’s an old prayer that is probably truer than we pretend: “Lord, help me to be the person my dog thinks I am.”

In a way, our pets try to do the same things that the world’s great religions hope to achieve: They challenge us to be our best selves, our kindest selves, our most generous selves. Maybe that’s why so many of us are fans of both pet and religions.

A KICK, THEN A SIREN.

The video shows that the man came out of nowhere. He peers in the back patio window and looks around. He disappears a few times, then comes back to peer inside again after pulling his shirt up to cover his head. He kicks the glass door and then looks inside again before walking away for a few seconds. After returning, the burglar gives three more big kicks. One the last one, the door gives way, and the home security siren sounds — and he quickly flees.

“There have been a string of burglaries

The Victim: Ryan Kelly

People

In addition, Kelly says there was another break-in in the area Friday and Saturday. According to Kelly, a neighbor said the same man in the video came to his house around midday and rang the doorbell to see if he needed any yard work done. A neighbor’s house was robbed an hour later — the thief exiting out the front door as the gate in the back was locked.

The Crime: Criminal mischief/attempted burglary

Date: Thursday, July 31

Time: Daylight hours

Location: 4300 block of Mill Creek

south of 635 and east of the toll road where guys are going door-to-door in the middle of the day — ringing doorbells under the guise of yard work — and then kicking in back doors if they find a suitable house,” Ryan Kelly says.

And this attempted break-in happened at Kelly’s own home — all captured on video.

Dallas Police Sgt. Keitric Jones of the Northeast Patrol Division says most burglars are looking for unoccupied homes. If a home appears occupied, the burglar will usually look for other, more inviting homes. He offers a few things to keep in mind regarding home break-ins.

“When away from home, leave a radio playing. Always leave a few inner lights burning at night. Automatic timers can be used to vary the on/ off pattern of interior lights when you’re away,” he says.

Jones says to use common sense in protecting a home and notes that a security alarm can really make a difference, as in Kelly’s case.

Eric Nadel, Preston Hollow resident and longtime voice of the Rangers, received the Ford C. Frick Award for excellence in broadcasting from the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y.

Hockaday junior Austria Arnold was elected president of National Youth Cutting Horse Association during the group’s annual July convention in Fort Worth. Prior to her election, Arnold served as the first vice president for a year. She has also been an area director since 2011.

Education

The National Association of Independent Schools selected Allison Hogan, the primer teacher at The Episcopal School of Dallas, for its annual Teachers of the Future program. As one of only 35 teachers nationwide chosen for the program, Hogan will participate in a variety of teaching initiatives to inspire leadership among students and colleagues.
