Annette Leslie knows how pediatric cancer can take a toll, and she’s made it her mission to help others. Her son Carson was 17 in 2009 when he told her after three years of treatment, “Mama, make sure someone studies those tumors in my brain because if those tumors can help some kid someday not die from cancer like I am, I’d like that.” Never underestimate the power of a Preston Hollow mom when it comes to her children. Annette Leslie started the Carson Leslie Foundation, which has resulted in more than $3.2 million in funding for pediatric cancer prevention and research. Recently, the Jordan Spieth Family Foundation announced the donation of a grant and an in-kind donation.

In his 40th season calling play-by-play for the Texas Rangers in 2018, Eric Nadel started reading limericks during the eighth inning. The “eighth inning limerick of the day” became so popular that fans started writing in with their own poems. In the off-season, he worked with Preston Hollow-based artist Arthur James to compile a book, “LIM-ERIC!” which was published last year. The poems and illustrations are great, but there are also three pages of endorsements that are just about as amusing. Rhett Miller of the Old 97’s wrote, “Some people say the world doesn’t need a book of limericks penned by a Hall Of Fame broadcaster. Those people are jerks.” All book proceeds go toward The Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation, which builds baseball and softball fields in disadvantaged areas. Nadel and wife, Jeannie, live in Preston Hollow and Durango, Colorado.

Why did you decide to do this book?

I had done three books previously, and I had resolved to never do another book because it’s far too much work and not much money. But we were writing one or more limericks every game. Arthur James did a few rough sketches. And I thought, “We’re going to do a beautiful book that’s going to bring some joy to people’s lives.” Most of the writing portion was already done. Then it was just a designer, editor and proofreader, and I needed someone to oversee the whole project. Then we had to form an LLC, so we needed a bookkeeper and an attorney. I wound up with six people working for me just to publish this book.

What are some of your favorite poems in the book? There’s one about Nelson Cruz, who didn’t catch the fly ball in the 2011 World Series, which cost the Rangers the World Series, but who is probably the nicest guy who’s ever played the game. It’s called “The Hex.”

My feelings toward Cruz are complex, His homers soar several decks, He’s kind and he’s shy, But if he’d caught that fly, We wouldn’t still have this damn hex.

Nelson since then has played for a couple of other teams. Whenever we play those other teams, you have all kinds of emotions from the fans because he’s also the guy who got us to the World Series. And in terms of charitable giving, no one ever did more than he did. This little five-line poem seemed to put everyone’s feelings about it into perspective.

Do you have a favorite illustration?

I wrote one about the freeway in Los Angeles called “Freeway Anxiety.” The limerick came to me in the middle of the night. I had this crappy rental car, and trying to get on the freeway in L.A. in this crappy rental car … I

was having a nightmare that it was happening over again. “It’s awful when your rental car sucks…” I thought, “That sounds like the first line of a limerick.” So I got up in my hotel room and finished it. Arthur’s illustration looks like a tourist map of Los Angeles. It has the Hollywood sign and the Santa Monica Pier. It’s great.

Which limerick challenged you?

Writing one about the World Cup. I don’t know anything about soccer. But my partner Matt Hicks is really into it. When the World Cup was about to start, I asked some questions about who the good teams are. So I wrote one called “World Cup Preview.” Matt said, “You only mentioned six teams. There are 32 teams in the tournament, and anyone could win.” It now has 14 stanzas, but all 32 teams are mentioned in the limerick, and it takes up a three-page spread in the book. Rhyming with “Croatia” isn’t easy.

Can you tell us about your birthday concerts?

Focus On Teens, a nonprofit for whom I am the spokesman, supports homeless students who attend Dallas ISD and Fort Worth ISD. Keith Price, who used to run the Austin Street Shelter, he realized there was a hole in the safety net for teenagers who can’t go to a homeless shelter. But there are thousands of homeless kids, and many of them attend school on a daily basis. It’s giving them support in the schools, where there’s a room they can chill out, do their homework, get food, school supplies, clothes if they need them, bus passes and all sorts of other financial support.

When is the next concert?

This is the eighth year at the Kessler around my birthday in May; this year it’s May 2 with Parker Millsap and Daphne Willis. Those concerts always sell out, so we always tell people to get tickets early if they plan to go.

Tell us about your Sunday supper series at Café Momentum.

We do one Sunday a month at the restaurant, when it’s normally closed. It’s a family-style dinner and concert, and I book the musicians. The musicians help design the menu based on their favorite foods. That’s really fun for chef Chad Hauser. He works with them to help come up with a menu. Twice we’ve had to have vegan stuff, and he came up with these incredible vegan treats. The whole concept of the restaurant [which hires kids released from Texas youth prisons] just blows me away. The rate of recidivism is incredibly low compared to the 50 percent overall for kids who come out of those facilities just in the first year. The vast majority of [Café Momentum] kids get jobs in restaurants after one year in the program.

When is the next one?

We have one March 24 with Seth Walker. We get a lot of performers who normally would perform at the Kessler, and a lot of performers are willing to perform for much less than they would normally get because the cause is so good. And the musicians are now talking to each other about it. The word is getting out about Café Momentum.

How did you get so interested in music?

Ever since I was a little kid growing up in New York, and my sister brought home an Elvis record. It was a 78, and it had “Hound Dog” on one side and “Don’t Be Cruel” on the other side. That record kind of won me over to being a music fan, and I’ve kind of been hooked since then. She’s three years older, and she was the first to bring home a Bob Dylan record and later, The Beatles. And we would just hang around listening to records together from the time I was a little kid.

Where can people get the book?

We’re selling it on Amazon and at the gift shop at the ballpark and at Texas Live, the venue that just opened next to the ballpark. During the season I’m going to do at least one or two book signings every home stand, prior to a game. So if people want to buy a book directly from me that I can sign, I’ll be very available to do that for anyone who goes out to games.

What’s the goal of the nonprofit work? When you get out of prison, the state of Texas gives you $100 and a bus ticket to the Houston or Dallas Greyhound station. There’s about 12,000 men that come back to Dallas every year. This year, we’re trying to get 2,000 of them clothed. They send us measurements and then we have a group of people who fit them. If prisoners plan to go the business route, we give them business clothing. If they’re going business casual, we give them khakis. If they’re going into construction or landscaping, we give them work boots, jeans, sneakers and sweatshirts. We’ve served 10,000 men over 14 years.

How does the organization work?

We have an army of about 50 or 60 women who process all the donations we get. We keep about 60 percent of what’s given to us. About 40 percent is ripped, dirty or stained. We give that 40 percent to different homeless shelters in Dallas. We then have an army of about 100 men who drop the clothing off at released prisoners’ homes. They’ll say, “You don’t know who I am, but God loves you. There’s a community of people that are here to support you.”

How many former prisoners do you serve?

‘I NEEDED CLOTHES AND YOU CLOTHED ME’

WHEN A MAN is released from prison, Tom Dooley or a fellow volunteer ambassador meets with him and provides four sets of clothes and shoes. Dooley is president of the board of One Man’s Treasure, a nonprofit faith-based ministry. Members collect, clean and sort clothing. Volunteers then meet with men exiting prison to provide clothes and help them transition. Dooley discovered the organization in 2014, when as a volunteer, he helped develop a strategic plan. Soon he was on the board. Dooley spent a career with Alcon Laboratories. He and his family, including three adult children, lived in Australia and Tokyo before moving to Mimosa Lane. “When I retired, I had no reason to sit back,” he says. “I’ve jumped into One Man’s Treasure.”

In 2018, we helped about 1,500 out of the 12,000 who come back to Dallas. I don’t think we’ll ever get to the full 12,000, nor do I think we need to because some of them have only been in prison for two or three years. Their wives or mothers are waiting, and their clothes are still in their closets. Not everybody needs what we offer.

How did you get involved?

The hook that got me is the recidivism rate. In Texas, recidivism is 43 percent, but the recidivism rate for the 10,000 men that we’ve touched is 14 percent. The people that we’re serving also come from this neighborhood. There’s such a misconception as to who’s in our state prison system. It’s about a third white, a third black and a third Hispanic. There’s a gentleman who’s involved in our organization. In college, he had a mishap, and somebody died. He went to prison for 20 years because of it. Regular guy. Wrong place at the wrong time.

Tom Dooley is president of the board of One Man’s Treasure.

What are your goals?

We’re trying to get our message out. Our cause doesn’t appeal to everybody, and we understand that. In the order of where people want to donate their money, it’s women with children, homelessness, vets and then men coming out of prison. We know where we are in the pecking order of empathy, and we’re not going to try to change that. But it’s been shocking. As we tell our story, people say, “I have a family member who was in prison.” That’s the thing that has surprised me as I go around this neighborhood.

How does religion play a role in the organization?

We believe it’s part of our formula of success. If we were to simply ring a doorbell, throw a bag of clothes at you and then walk away, I don’t think the impact would be the same. The fact that distinguishes us is that a stranger is willing to sit, have coffee, provide a cell phone number and say, “I’ll do everything I can to help you.”

How can people help?

We live on donations of clothing. We have relationships with about 50

churches. I’ve used the Nextdoor app, and the response has been overwhelming. We buy new socks and new underwear, but most everything else that we give is donated. We need sizes all the way up to 7X. We usually buy that stuff because no one is donating, generally, the large sizes. We’re always looking for money. But it’s not our primary need. We need jeans, work boots, sneakers, nice T-shirts and collared shirts.

What about female prisoners?

We do not serve women. They represent about 9 percent of the state prison population. When women request clothing, we connect them with Dress for Success and other organizations. We just don’t have the resources to service that segment.

What’s coming up for the organization?

We want to hire another staff member. We have four part-time staff members. Our biggest weakness is getting more men to know who we are. We’ve recently added a board member who works at J.C. Penney. The ‘Gurus’ of Grow-Your-Own

It’s hard finding dirt in the city, but North Haven Gardens has the scoop, especially on the kind we need to grow fruits, vegetables and herbs.

Everyone’s favorite? It’s the tomato, says Cody Hoya, North Haven Gardens general manager.

“Tomatoes are especially fun to grow with children. They are easy, rewarding and a product children will sample,” he says. “North Haven Gardens has dozens of varieties during peak season.”

With spring planting season here, Hoya says we need to plant early, ideally by the last week of March.

“Of course, there’s still the chance for a freeze this time of year; when temperatures drop below 45 degrees, plants must be protected while establishing a root system,” Hoya says.

Peppers pick up in April and May, along with squash, melons, and okra. Salad greens and cole crops such as broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts arrive later for fall and winter planting, and they thrive in containers, he says. North Haven Gardens’ herb and vegetable transplants are locally sourced from growers here in north Texas, Hoya says. But for gardeners seeking unique “treasure hunt” items, North Haven Gardens sources exotic and tropical finds such as ginger, curry, pineapple, and citrus whenever they’re available—but call in advance, as specialty stock can be fleeting.

how a man showed up at his halfway house with a bag of clothes and talked to him about God. Things fell into place, and he got a job as a male model. He strutted this room, and he was a fabulous looking guy. I can’t imagine that he had that confidence the day before he got released from prison. That was one of those “wow” moments showing the impact that our organization can make.

What other “wow” moments have you had? About six months ago, we were doing construction on our warehouse. Two guys who had been released within the last week and were living in a halfway house donated their time to help with the work. I was driving them back to the halfway house, and I asked one to use Waze to help with direction. I handed him my phone and he says, “What is this? What do I do?” He had been in prison for five years. He was in his late 20s. Technology changes so fast. There’s a huge adjustment for them.

Have you ever felt endangered?

Never.

HOW A CITY STEERING COMMITTEE COULD CHANGE YOUR LIFE WHEN IT COMES TO NORTHWEST HIGHWAY NEAR THE TOLLWAY

IN JANUARY, nearly 100 neighbors interested in Planned Development 15 packed the Walnut Hill Recreation Center community room. The PD-15 area is located north of West Northwest Highway between Pickwick Lane and Baltimore Avenue and encompasses six condominium complexes. At issue: What will become of the condos now after one complex burned down? What are the height restrictions? What’s the grand vision for redevelopment? Millions of dollars are at stake. City Council member Jennifer Staubach Gates told the crowd that she’d like for recommendations to be ready by March given that the last committee couldn’t come to a resolution. Why should neighbors care about what seems like a difficult-to-understand issue? If you care about traffic and Northwest Highway development, here’s what you need to know.

What is a planned development?

• It establishes planning and zoning regulations for an area of land.

What is PD-15?

• PD-15 was established April 23, 1947, and includes approximately 14.2 acres.

Why a PD-15 steering committee?

• Preston Place burned down in March 2017.

• The City immediately created a study group, which ultimately couldn’t come to an agreement about how to develop the area.

• In April 2018, at a community meeting, Gates invited citizens to apply to be on a new steering committee.

Who’s on the new PD-15 steering committee?

The City reports the organization represents all property owners within PD-15, with proportional representation mirroring land mass. Neighborhood representives from outside PD-15 also are included:

What has the new steering committee been doing?

• Wilkins, desiring an urbanist’s counsel, invited architect Michael Friebele at Callison RTKL to offer a concept.

• The Friebele concept: “One idea, and you build the whole thing.” Sources won’t allow us to publish a map of the concept, but the idea is for architects to design one concept for all properties, suggesting no more than 10 stories on Northwest Highway and four stories on the north side.

• Here’s what owners at all condo properties want, according to Wilkins: plenty of green space and walkability; high rises on the south, low rises on north.

DIGITAL CLAYMAKER

Not only is Heather Gorman an artist, but she digitally sculpts cranial implants

When told that she’s to be featured for a story called “Living Beautifully in Preston Hollow,” artist Heather Gorman, a 25-year resident of Midway Hollow, tries to make the case that her house doesn’t qualify as living beautifully in Preston Hollow.

But Gorman’s art, created in her home studio and converted garage, argues otherwise. An artist, digital sculptor and designer, she shows her work in the Craighead Green Gallery on Dragon Street, On Center Gallery in Provincetown, Massachusetts, JRB Gallery in Oklahoma City and Volakis Gallery in Napa Valley.

“I like people to come away with the feeling of right in between laughing and crying, not knowing if it’s really funny or a little sad,” she says. “Occasionally, the images are slightly disturbing. Some of the images might bother people. They might think it’s supposed to make them feel something and they struggle with that a little. I want people to walk away with a feeling. It’s all emotionally based.”

When she isn’t using traditional media from wood and bronze, she’s digitally sculpting custom cranial implants for MedCAD, to be used by surgeons, or creating toys, prototypes and housewares.

She says she was once computer phobic, but the digital cranial work allows her to apply her skills. She works with a CT scan and then mirrors the other half of the brain. “With art, it’s a pretty rare opportunity to help someone,” she says.

Gorman says she knew she wanted to be an artist at a young age. “As a kid, I would spend hours digging in the ground making an army of bizarre, little clay and stick figures,” she says on her website. “Three-legged dogs and winged monkeys, my creations were always a little sad, a little misshapen. My own troop of misfits set in the sun to dry.”

Gorman attended Good Shepherd Episcopal School and

graduated from the Arts Magnet High School in 1985. She is a self-taught painter who began showing her work in 1993. In 1995, she added sculpture, studying the art of bronze casting under artists Martin Delabano and David Iles.

Is digital considered art? “I gave the pushback,” she says. “That’s why I didn’t do it for so long. We’ve given talks at the Dallas Museum of Art. People have been so open to it. I’ve yet to receive any pushback as far as what I’ve been doing. It doesn’t just get printed. There’s always handwork in it. I can still see my hand in it. I can still see me in it.”

Gorman explains the 3D process. “I’m trying to humanize it,” she says. “It’s still plastic. The software and program I use, the fact that I can touch it. That’s all the difference, too. I’m not plugging in numbers. I can feel it. It is digital clay. You start with wet digital clay, and you refine it.”

Mentor Martin Delabano says, “Occasionally I have very talented students. The best way I can help them is to stay out of their way. Heather was one of those students. She was an artist who was looking for some technical expertise that she could use to extend her vocabulary of how to best present her wonderful personal images that appear in her work.”

Gorman recently married David Carapetyan after her first husband died. “I honestly feel like this is what I was born to do,” she says. “If I could choose what to do anytime of the day it’s going to be to make art one way or another.”

THE UNOFFICAL MAYOR OF MIDWAY

THE UNOFFICIAL MAYOR of the neighborhood is 81 going on 21. She bounds into La Madeleine on Midway with enough energy to describe three houses and drop four names — all before introductions.

If we played a Dallas game of “Six Degrees of Separation,” Ida Jane Bailey would win.

“Oh, I really don’t know that many people,” Bailey says. “But I do have the right connections to a lot of people.

“And, I do know all the dogs.”

For 40 years, Bailey has been the sweet sentinel of Old Preston Hollow. From her kitchen-window view on Manning Lane and multiple, daily dog walks up Manchester Drive, she has kept up with the Joneses and kept track of the Joneses.

“I’m not a nosy neighbor, not into gossip,” she says. “I just love this little neighborhood. I love doing anything I can to help.”

Bailey is the untitled president of the voluntary Midway Protective League, which acts in lieu of a formal homeowners’ association.

She’s the organizer that connects residents’ problems with solutions. And, yes, she’s the kindly code enforcement officer that will, in her own genteel manner, deter littering.

“She’s the mayor,” says Melissa Plaskoff, who met Bailey the day her family moved into the neighborhood in 2012. “She’s at the center of everything that happens here. She’s the main reason it’s been so good for so long.”

For 40 years, Ida Jane Bailey has been the neighbor who keeps us connected 

last summer, the dog of Mavericks’ guard J.J. Barea got loose and briefly interrupted a softball game at the local park with a comic gallop across the field.

But mostly, it’s a community Bailey helps hold together like family.

Bailey and her Midway Protective League fought off the proposed intrusion of big-box megastores. She organizes and attends bridge parties as well as the monthly Ladies’ Wine Group. She welcomes diversity, watches for neighbors’ package deliveries, has keys to most of the houses on her street, and readily provides support, from emotional to tangible.

SOUTHERN ROOTS

Bailey was born in Dublin, Georgia, but followed her husband, Doug, to newspaper jobs in Miami, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and, eventually, to the Dallas Times Herald. The couple will celebrate a 60th anniversary in June. They have two children practicing law in Dallas and two grandchildren.

“I was excited to be here,” Bailey remembers. “As much as I loved Philadelphia, I never again want to scrape ice off my windshield.”

The hunt for a home was simple. Friends suggested living close to Dallas North Tollway so Doug could have an easy commute downtown. They chose a 2,600-square-foot “rambler” on Manning. The Baileys bought it for $105,000. Today, it’s estimated on Trulia.com for $987,000.

When she was younger, Bailey took a personality test to identify her strengths and determine her career. As a result, she traded teaching for selling homes. She attained her license and joined the agency of Terry, Abio & Adleta. Throughout the years, she has retained the distinctive southern charm and unique drawl that turns “school” into “skewwwwwwwwl.”

What made her so successful? “To sell Dallas, you have to know Dallas,” she says. “That was easy, because I immediately fell in love.”

‘DALLAS WELCOMES YOU’

Though there are no legally defined borders, the community to the north of Northwest Highway and east of Midway Road is five minutes from Love Field, seven minutes to the

Galleria Dallas, eight minutes from downtown and 22 minutes to DFW International Airport.

Labeling Bailey’s neighborhood is more difficult. Is it annexed by Preston Hollow? Is it Old Preston Hollow? Poor Preston Hollow? Midway Hollow?

“We might have an identity crisis as far as our name,” Plaskoff says. “But our neighborhood is run by Ida Jane.”

Neighbors take pride in the area’s “park appeal,” characterized by no street curbs and houses set back from the street so residents can walk out their front doors to a view of greenery rather than asphalt.

When Plaskoff’s son needed an emergency replacement actor for his school project, Bailey arrived within an hour in full costume. And when the power went out in a nearby home on a cold winter day?

“We all got together and bought the family some space heaters,” Bailey says. “It’s what we do. We look out for each other, and it’s infectious.”

You can catch Bailey on any day, walking her bichon frise, Louie, morning, noon and night.

“We’re not a development or a subdivision or the glamorous ‘Desperate Housewives,’ ” she says. “We’re just an honest-to-God neighborhood with great karma.”

SCREEN TEEN

HOCKADAY SENIOR Alexa May is only 18, but her films have already been screened at six festivals.

The storyteller has produced 20 short films of various genres — a few earning her awards.

“What’s amazing is that you are creating something from nothing that has the power to change someone else’s life,” May says. “Isn’t that what storytelling is all about?”

Glenys Quick, who teaches May advanced film at The Hockaday School says May’s screenplays and cinematography combine to make her work unique.

“It is (May’s) insight into character and small domestic dramas that makes her films different,” Quick says. “She also is able to write profound but believable dialogue.”

May has been a storyteller since childhood. She wrote novels on her family computer and filled notebooks with stories. She searched baby name lists to find the perfect character names and directed short skits using her

stuffed animals as actors.

In sixth grade May discovered video. Then, she dove in: binge-watching camera tutorials, teaching herself how to format screenplays and recruiting friends to perform in various projects.

“I remember it feeling so surreal watching my once 2D stories come to life on screen,” May says. “I caught the filmmaking bug.”

Since July 2015, May has created narratives, documentaries, experimental films and a musical. Her worked has been screened at six festivals, including the All American High School Film Festival and the Newark International Youth Film Festival.

Her 2017 short “Phonies,” which stars her grandmother and looks at the effects of technology on society, received “Best Documentary” at the Texas-wide Pegasus Film Festival and “Best Experimental” at the national Elkhorn Valley BEA D7 Film and Media Conference.

Alexa May has created narratives, documentaries and a musical.

“I would write stories and make films even if screenings and awards weren’t available,” she says. “It’s that feeling of creating something of your own with hopes that in some shape or form you touch or inspire others. That’s the ultimate goal.”

May says the process of writing, directing and editing her projects differs from project to project. She spent five months writing her 2018 film “All Grown Up,” which follows a girl named Lola as she realizes the responsibilities and consequences of growing up. After casting the film, May and crew spent 15 hours shooting in multiple locations. Editing the 13-minute video took two months. Another 2018 film, “When He Came Home,” about how a woman changes during a divorce, required two days of filming and a month of editing.

Directing is the most challenging for May. She’s still learning how to work with different actors and manage a large production crew. “In the end, after tiring, restless, beautiful work, it (is) all worth it,” she says, “and I take so much from the experience.”

CONSTRUCTION AT HILLCREST HIGH School and the nearby Walnut Hill Pump Station caused many a traffic tizzy for nearby neighbors over the past year.

But the new Hillcrest principal, Joseph Sotelo, says construction, which started in 2017, should be done by December with parts facing Hillcrest Road done as early as the end of April.

“The water plant next door is also under construction, so it looks like we’re getting this massive Taj Mahal,” Sotelo says of the school project, a result of a 2015 Dallas ISD bond package. “Weather has slowed us down a little bit but we’re rockin’ and rollin’. The whole community is looking forward to it. The school wasn’t dilapidated, but it was time for a facelift.”

WRA Architects planned the renovation, which includes a new public entrance and administration offices, a two-story classroom addition with areas for independent study, upgrades to fine arts spaces and a 1,000-seat gymnasium with locker rooms and a tornado shelter, among other improvements.

Historical photos of the school and students will be made into murals for the administrative wing.

Sotelo says the new facilities will help the school’s International Baccalaureate program and collegiate academy grow.

“We’re in competition with other schools and private schools,” Sotelo says. “We enjoy having those private school students visit us. They take tours and shadow our students, and it’s great to see them see our school in a new light.”
