Making a rainbow statement
Northaven United Methodist Church showed its support of same-sex marriage and gay clergy by covering the words “United Methodist” on its Preston Road sign with a rainbow flag. A photo posted by the church on Facebook had the following caption: “A church that legislates exclusion and homophobia is a church that has left us.”

URSULINE GRAD MEETS SNOOP DOGG
How Juliette DiGiuseppe found herself and became Layke
The best course of action starts with charting the right course.

And with locations across North Texas, our care is close to you. Schedule an appointment today and discover our compassionate, comprehensive approach. Juliette DiGiuseppe grew up in Preston Hollow and graduated from Ursuline in 2000. She studied vocals, took ballet and was a competitive cheerleader. Now known as “Layke,” she teamed up with Snoop Dogg and recorded a cover of the Bastille and Marshmello collaboration called “Happier.” Proceeds from the project will benefit children through Snoop Special Stars and Childhelp.
What happened after Ursuline?
I went to the University of North Texas, and then I found my way out to Los Angeles. I was always strong in English, and I turned that into songs. I attended the Musicians Institute. A couple years ago, I met producer Adrian Gurvitz. He’s worked with Stevie Wonder, Steve Perry and Whitney Houston. We had a meeting, and he really liked me. He said, “You’ve got something.” We cut 10 songs. It’s Layke Part One on Spotify and iTunes.
Why the name Layke?
Adrian and I spent a year putting a list together of nearly 100,000 names. He wanted to do something separate from any project I’d done before as Jules or Juliette — a whole new me. It was a new moment for me because we had changed my style of music. I used to be primarily in this kind of dream pop world. I was shedding one skin and discovering myself artistically. He really made me get uncomfortable with the genres I was thinking of doing. It was time to choose a different name to show that. There was this show that came out with Kyra Sedgwick, and I love Kyra Sedgwick. Anything that Kyra Sedgwick is in, I will watch. Her daughter on the show, her name was Lake. We wanted something cool and one word, and something that just had a good energy. I was like, “If we throw the “Y” in there, I think it would be really cool.” And it just fit.
What were you like when you were a student at Ursuline?
I was a little bit of a punk rocker girl. At Ursuline, I was my own unique self. That’s what’s cool about it. There is a lot of uniqueness there, and I think every girl is different. My sisters, they all live in Dallas, and they’re all a little more conservative than me. I’m definitely the liberal.
What are your memories of Ursuline?
I was a UA cheerleader. I was a big fan of the English program. Writing was my thing. I don’t think I encountered an English teacher I didn’t love at Ursuline.
Where do you live now?
I live in Hollywood in a house up in the hills. I’m a queer woman. I date men. I date women. I date everyone. It’s the type of place that fits my personality and who I am very well. It’s home for me.
What’s a typical day like for you?
Yesterday I had three meetings out of the house. One had to do with styling. One was a meeting with my producer. Another was a meeting with a graphic designer. The shoot with Snoop, we only had two physical hours with him, so we shot that fast. Every day is different. Some days I have appearances at night, so I’m sleeping in until 11, because I have to be at an appearance at 9 p.m., and I’ll be out until 2 in the morning.
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
I’m proud of the projec t that me and Snoop Dogg did. It is bigger than us. Adrian Gurvitz, my producer, started out thinking, “We’ll just raise some money for youth at risk and try to do something good.” I want to build my activism. When he said to involve Snoop, I was like, “That’s never going to happen.” But he had worked with him before, and Adrian is amazing, and he made it happen. Getting to do that was a surreal experience. To be able to film the video with him and now see it come to life is amazing. We’re getting donations.
What’s the most challenging thing you’ve overcome?
I think my own head. T his industry is the thief of joy. I’m 36 now. It took me a long time to get
“At Ursuline, I was my own unique self.”
there, and that’s something that I really want people to understand. Never give up on your dreams and never stop trying to achieve more or do more. Whatever it is, whoever you are, or whatever your background, wherever you come from, whatever your age, whatever your circumstances, you can change that. You can overcome. Your age is not something that holds you back, you know what I’m saying? Where you come from is not something that holds you back.
What’s your style?
I used to dress a lot less androg ynous and a lot more tight-fitting. In the past couple of years, I’ve transformed. I wear kind of androgynous stuff, and I like the power in that. I’m all about however anyone wants to put themselves out in the world. No one should judge how someone dresses. I feel more comfortable draped and covered up. I’m sick of being sexualized. I wear black, white and gray. I don’t ever wear blue or brown, really, unless it’s like a deep velvet blue or something. I love iridescence, and I love neon.
DELIGHTFULLY DEUBER
A $300,000 KITCHEN, A FENDI-INSPIRED CLOSET: THIS IS HOW REALITY STARS DO REDESIGN
Story by JEHADU ABSHIRO Photography by DANNY FULGENCIOCLOSE FOLLOWERS of “The Real Housewives of Dallas” know that Cary and Mark Deuber spent a season enduring a remodel. Now it’s time for the big reveal on Strait Lane.
The kitchen is Mark’s, but the closet is all Cary.
Mark loves to cook, and the family prepares culinary treats five nights a week. Their $300,000 kitchen layout mimics Eleven Madison Park in New York City, which has three Michelin stars. The centerpiece is a $75,000 French-made blue Molteni stove — the only one in Texas, and the only one with its own Instagram.
“We decided on a kitchen with function,” Cary says. “Everything is easy. There’s a place for everything. You never have to leave a spot with a plate.”
Highlights include a Sub-Zero refrigerator (filled with fresh produce and meats that are flown in daily), a prep kitchen with its own dishwasher, custom German Kitchen Center cabinetry to organize the tools, and a baking station for sweets and pasta. The massive island, fitted with a warming stove and two additional dishwashers, serves as a plating, entertaining and clean-up station.
Cary calls her padlocked closet “my wonderland.”
Fashioned after the Highland Park Fendi store, the closet boasts lighting done by the same vendor who did the lighting at Fendi. Her black crocodile Kelly is safe-guarded along with her grandmother Cary’s vintage handbags.
“I just like coming in here and sitting on the bench,” she says. “My daughter will come in, and she’ll try on my shoes, and we just hang out. It doesn’t get much better than this.”
Despite all the glitz, there’s a touch of sentimentality in the Deubers’ home. There may be a matching Kewazinga Bubinga Steinway and bar, but Mark’s antique secretary has been with them for years. The mobile hanging in the living room is made by homebuilder Susan Newell. Paintings include those commissioned by local artists as well as those from Mark’s hometown of Zurich. Outside, the pool mimics the one from a resort in Turks and Caicos where the Deubers were engaged.
“We made our home like our paradise,” Cary says. “Like our sanctuary.”
MERCURIAL MOMENT
THE MERCURY is our neighborhood’s second home. Much of the staff has worked here 15 years or more. Regulars come two to four times a week and are like family. They don’t make reservations. They just show up and get squeezed in, even if it’s busy. Those who like to sit at the bar are treated like a guest in the house of Chef Chris Ward. Diners can expect a strong pour and bartenders will bring a fresh, icy glass to keep the drink chilled if a guest has been sipping on it for a while.
The Mercury is no place for fuss. You might consider its unofficial motto to be: “Why mess with a good thing?” The restaurant doesn’t

seem to worry about keeping up with food trends or paying off concierges to keep an everchanging rotation of tourists coming through the doors. It has a consistent menu perfected over 21 years.
“If I weren’t here, you wouldn’t know the difference,” Ward says. His staff runs like a well-oiled machine and has mastered his elevated style.
The menu hasn’t changed much over the years, but that doesn’t stop people from ordering off the menu. Ward is happy to oblige. From years of trial and error, he’s learned that his taste isn’t always what other people want.
He just wants his customers to be happy, which is why he converted a small section of his restaurant into a sushi lounge.
“It’s like Nobu without the price tag,” Ward says.
The main menu is caviar and foie gras. The sushi menu is tempura and sashimi. It satisfies a hip, younger crowd that prefers Kampachi over sous vide-style short ribs. Although the sushi lounge satisfies a different palate, the food is still made with the same quality and mastery that has become synonymous with The Mercury.
Chef Ward isn’t what you might expect. He is humble and doesn’t like the spotlight; he prefers to stay behind-the-scenes in the kitchen. His technical skills weren’t learned at some fancy culinary school but during a summer job while he was a student at Southern Methodist University. He mastered his skills over 40 years of working at some of the biggest restaurants in the country.
Chef Ward may be one of the most celebrated chefs in Dallas, but The Mercury doesn’t draw much of a crowd from outside the neighborhood. It’s a hidden gem in plain sight, and it’s just for us.
Cindi’s New York Deli and Bakery, now with five locations, is a favorite among Dallasites looking for the authentic flavors of New York. Our menu boasts an array of delicious selections and a great selection of comfort foods

THE PEOPLE
WHO MAKE IT HAPPEN.
HOW SHOULD I PRICE A PRESTON HOLLOW PROPERTY?
AACCORDING TO CHAD:
The pricing strategy in Preston Hollow right now is being priced to sell. While the market is strong, there is more competition and more new construction than we have had in the past years. As a result, you have to give a buyer a sense of urgency, and that is instilled when you price a property to move.
AACCORDING TO JULI:
The Preston Hollow estate market is much stronger than it was a few years ago. In the past year there were many sales between $4.5M and $18.5M. We are optimistic that this trend in Preston Hollow will keep its momentum.
AACCORDING TO CHRISTINE:
Some agents and firms encourage sellers to list their property as “Coming Soon” before going into Multiple Listings Service (MLS), which reaches over 30,000 agents. This severely limits the exposure it will receive. Only a small number of agents will know the property is for sale, and it will not be featured on sites like Zillow.com
AACCORDING TO SUSAN:
Today you need to be everywhere to attract the right buyer. It is essential you are on MLS and advertise the property through all channels. Connections are also very important. Your agent needs to be a respected networker who tells other agents about the listing and hosts luxury-driven events. You do not keep your home a secret.
AACCORDING TO TERRI:
Prepare to meet the market. “Styled to Sell” pays off in every market. There are many stately homes in Preston Hollow with dark finishes. I recommend a more transitional, contemporary feel. It’s all about the math - broaden your market by stylizing and sell your home faster for the highest price. Stylizing pays dividends.
ACCORDING TO GRACIELA:
The reality is that Preston Hollow inventory is a bit higher this year. Many people took their homes off the market over the holidays and re-listed them; there is a fair amount of new construction as well. Sellers need to price aggressively and do any needed repairs or minor cosmetic updates. If it is priced right and shows well it will sell.
ACCORDING
The predominate style of new construction in Preston Hollow is contemporary to soft contemporary with open floor plans, clean lines and windows that allow a large amount of light in. This part of Dallas is heavily treed and people love having unobstructed views of trees from their living area or den.
ACCORDING TO JILL:
Private school acceptance letters come out on the Friday that Spring Break begins. Since many of the schools are located in one general area south of LBJ down to Walnut Hill, there is always a rush of people from out of town or the suburbs who want to be in the nearby neighborhoods.

WHAT DO BATMAN MEMORABILIA, AN APACHE SKULL BUSTER AND A PICASSO HAVE IN COMMON?
THEY’RE ALL STODGHILL FAMILY TREASURES.
Story by LISA KRESL Photography by DANNY FULGENCIOS
teve and Anne Stodghill are in their library showing off a “zombie apocalypse/ bat closet.” The Batman theme song plays as a custom-made bat suit emerges. A leather motorcycle suit covered in custom Kevlar was created in conjunction with designers at DC Comics. As the closet door closes, the “Flight of the Valkyries” plays. Steve, an attorney for Winston & Strawn, has a thing about Batman. He’s been collecting the character’s memorabilia since 1965. Upstairs, there’s a 2,000-piece Batman collection in his son’s playroom. At work, he’s known as Batman.
The Stodghill home, which they bought in 2012, is a showcase for their collections, from art, Hollywood memorabilia and their world travels to ancient weapons, the old West, wine and rock stars’ guitars.
“We wanted a house that looked like it had been built in Southern California a hundred years ago,” Anne says. “We wanted a Spanish Revival style home. We fell in love with Montecito and the casual lifestyle of homes in Beverly Hills and Santa Monica.”
The two agreed that a must for their dream home is a library. They’re both avid readers. In addition to books, the room houses items from their world travels organized by geography — Africa, India, China, Russia, South and Central America, then Europe. Also on display are a shirt that John Wayne wore in three movies, a James Stewart suit from “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance” and a jacket that Richard Boone wore in six seasons of “Have Gun — Will Travel.”
The ancient weapons collection includes Viking knives, a 600-year-old Swiss battleaxe, a Somali blow dart gun, an Apache skull buster and swords of all varieties — Samurai, Persian, Congolese and Spanish.
A cigar that Winston Churchill smoked is housed in the same room as a triceratops horn, Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West show megaphone and a pipe case and jacket worn by Doc Holliday. Nearby are photos of Steve, who is chair of the American Film Institute’s National Council, with celebrities: George Clooney, Steven Spielberg, Elizabeth Hurley, Bradley
CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: A framed collection of Life magazine covers sparks conversation among guests at charity events at the house. 2. A flag used in 1918 by the 5th U.S. Cavalry in the attack on Pancho Villa. 3. An acoustic guitar was signed by country artist Pat

Cooper, Val Kilmer, Clint Eastwood, Harrison Ford, Steve Martin, Morgan Freeman and Robert De Niro.
All that and you’re not out of the library yet. The hall is lined with framed Life magazine covers.
“One of the reasons we bought the house is we have large art, and we've since bought more large art,” Steve says. “But this house really had a lot of display space.”
Anne catalogues the collections. David LaChapelle’s “Angelina Jolie,” an Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, a Picasso, a Lichtenstein and photographs of rockers by singer and fashion photographer Bryan Adams.
The Stodghills entertain once a week, including book signings, charity events and a recent dinner for the chancellor of the University of Texas, Steve and Anne’s alma mater. Their upstairs ballroom has even been used for wedding receptions.
Many of the features of the house are based on the couple’s travels. The front door is modeled on the one at the Four Seasons in Santa Barbara. The ballroom bar is a replica of the one at the Montecristo in New York City. And the media room, which seats 28 people and has a 195-inch screen, is inspired by The Castro Theatre in San Francisco.
“People use the term ‘curated,’ but it's just stuff and more stuff every time I turn around,” Anne says. “Having art is like having extended members of the family. Being able to see a piece of art in different lighting and at different times of the year, and when you're in a different mood, there’s nothing like it.”
“We wanted a house that looked like it had been built in Southern California a hundred years ago.”

DWELL WITH PURPOSE
Shop the latest trends and make a difference in our neighborhood
Preston Hollow designer Holly Hickey Moore calls her style “playfully sophisticated.” And now she’s leveraging that playfulness to help families escape poverty and homelessness.
Dwell with Dignity, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this spring, is a nonprofit that partners with the interior design industry to provide furniture and outfit homes for those moving into permanent housing. Moore is one of nine designers participating in the organization’s annual fundraiser called Thrift Studio. The pop-up shop features vignettes from each designer as well as fine art from 34 artists. All items can be purchased, and 100 percent of the proceeds benefit the organization’s mission.
An opening preview party April 4 includes cocktails and hors d’oeuvres and allows shoppers to get an early start. Pay $175 to check out the goods from 6-7 p.m. or $125 for
Story by LISA KRESL | Images courtesy of HOLLY HICKEY MOORElong skirts designed by her mother. (She plans to wear her mother’s original prototype to the opening party.)
“I knew when I got here to Dallas that I wanted to be involved in the community somehow,” says Moore, who lives with her husband and 3-year-old son, Elliot, a student at the Jewish Community Center.
“Ultimately, we’re really helping these families get back on their feet and live happily,” Moore says. “We’re all happy so why can’t they be happy too?”
Dwell with Dignity’s Thrift Studio Pop-Up Shop is located at Dallas Design Center, 1250 Slocum St., #550. For more info, visit thriftstudio.com.
Students will build a Zero-Carbon Model home using systems to ensure the house uses less energy than it generates. Dallas Academy students will also participate in a school wide Energy Conservation Challenge to conserve energy at home.
JENNIFER STAUBACH GATES
What should neighbors know about you?
I love serving as your District 13 council member and will continue to advocate for great basics, which make great neighborhoods. I am a mom, wife, grandma, nurse, community volunteer and public servant who serves to better our community for the benefit of generations to come.
What is your No. 1 issue?
Keeping Dallas residents safe, and I am honored to have the support of the police and firefighters.
Why are you qualified?
For the last six years, I have represented our community on the Dallas City Council. Working together with homeowners, neighborhood leaders, community stakeholders and city leaders, I have delivered proven results for our community on important issues like preserving our police pension, improving our streets, investing in infrastructure and even rooting out corruption. I have earned a reputation for doing my homework, listening to all sides and being a collaborative consensus builder.
What’s surprising about you?
My experience as a nurse has contributed to my success as a council member. My nursing education taught me how to make informed, educated decisions in a compassionate, caring manner. But my nursing background also allowed me to professionally navigate the Ebola crisis in my district in 2014 as well as understand dynamics behind effective EMS delivery. Public safety is impacted by both police response and emergency medical response.
Why should neighbors vote for you?
I am ethical and trustworthy and committed to listening to voters’ concerns, work hard on their behalf, and I have the ability to deliver experienced leadership that is relevant in today’s Dallas. I’m a proven problem solver and collaborator who is focused on solutions.
LAURA MILLER
What should neighbors know about you?
I am apparently the first Mayor of Dallas to ever run for the City Council, and I am honored.
What is your No. 1 issue?
I am running because neighborhoods throughout District 13 have been under siege for the past six years, with an unprecedented amount of highdevelopment being supported by our current councilwoman, with no regard to the tremendous traffic, parking and pedestrian problems in our area. Homeowners here need a strong advocate to protect their interests, and I’m happy to be their advocate.
Why are you qualified?
I took an idea I had to reduce homelessness in Dallas to my synagogue last summer, and we launched The Ladder Project. The concept is: “If 1,000 families can’t save one person by pooling their private resources, then who can?” We take an individual or family and provide a safety net until they reach selfsufficiency by finding them a job and an apartment, including furniture, clothing, food, medical services and a social network.
What’s surprising about you?
My priority is my family. The best decision I ever made in life (besides marrying my husband, Steve Wolens) was leaving elected office in 2007 when my children asked me not to run again for mayor because they were still in school and needed me at home more.
Why should neighbors vote for you?
I covered City Hall as a journalist for 10 years before I ran for elected office. I served as an Oak Cliff council member for three and a half years and then as mayor for five and half years. I look forward to returning with all the passion and tenacity that I had before, plus the wisdom, hindsight and patience that comes with being 60 years old.
