MEAT LOAF, THE MUSICAL

Everything is a musical these days, including the life of Meat Loaf. The 1970s rocker attended Thomas Jefferson High School back when he was known as Michael Lee Aday. The theater production based on his best-selling album “Bat Out of Hell” made its debut in early August. Fans took to New York streets in a motorcycle procession to celebrate the first preview of the musical. Led by the show’s star, Andrew Polec, the motorcade caused a traffic snarl. The group of proud hellions raised their voices, howling the title song over some disgruntled driver’s honking. Meat Loaf was inducted into the Texas Film Hall of Fame in 2012. In 2015, he received one of TJ High School’s Distinguished Alumni Awards.

HEY HAL

Neighbor and former President George W. Bush welcomed his first grandson in early August. Henry Harold Hager, called Hal, is Jenna Bush Hager’s third child with husband Henry Hager. They also have Mila, 6, and Poppy, 3. Jenna told her co-anchors on the Today show that her daughters are thrilled to have a little baby brother “all of their own.” Last May, Jenna told People magazine that her father, George W. Bush, 73, and mother, Laura Bush, 72, were “over the moon” to be expecting a grandson. Although, Jenna joked on the Today show that W was “mad” his first grandson wasn’t named after him.

Neighbor Allison Daniels and her mother found what seemed to be an injured baby rabbit in their front yard. Neighbors suggested she take the bunny to Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation or Rabbit Rescue’s Diana Leggett. Daniels and her mother decided to take the creature to Desiree Schorn, a certified bunny rescuer. Daniels’ mother reports the bunny was overheated and dehydrated but was in good hands. STANFORD’S SOCCER STANDOUT

Ursuline alumna Madison Haley makes her mark on the collegiate scene 

Soccer dads are notorious for sideline antics, but imagine if your father is a Pro Football Hall of Famer and former Dallas Cowboys player. Ursuline Academy of Dallas graduate Madison Haley says her father, Charles Haley, is known more for his unwavering support of her rather than pumped-up pressure. The 5-foot-7 Haley is a junior and forward at Stanford University, where she made the 2018 All-Pac Second Team and received a 2018 Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable mention. A member of the U.S. U-20 National Team, she has spent the last two summers playing for the FC Dallas Women’s Premier Soccer League team. After a summer living at home with mom, Karen, and the family’s five doberman pinschers, she returned to Stanford, where she majors in science, technology and society. “God sent us an angel,” Charles Haley told WFAA. “And then he blessed her with brains and skills. God has something special planned for her.”

How did Stanford come about?

I committed to Stanford at the end of my sophomore year at Ursuline. Then, I went off to college and really went after it. We had amazing team chemistry. We really believed we would win every game, and we did. That showed in our campaign to ultimately win a National Championship. To play a big role in that was beyond imagination. You dream of those moments as a kid.

What’s it like to be a student there?

I always get asked, “How hard is it?” It’s challenging academically and athletically, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Everyone excels at what they’re doing. There’s so much humility there. Sometimes, I’ll be biking around campus and I’m like, “Holy crap. I go to Stanford.” I see Katie Ledecky. I’m having lunch with Olympians. People don’t have these experiences, so I’m trying to make the most of it.

What made you choose soccer as a girl?

I’m the youngest. I have two older sisters and one older brother. My dad was an NFL athlete so we were just thrown into sports as kids. I started playing in elementary school. My dad tried to make me try out for a girls’ basketball team. I ran track for a bit, but I naturally ended up sticking with soccer.

Who was your favorite soccer player when you were growing up?

Messi.

What are your memories of Ursuline?

Winning the 24th State Championship. I didn’t have a lot of time with the team, but I still felt a part of it. It was a special experience, especially with the history of

Ursuline dominating women’s soccer. When I come home, I have a great time hanging out with the girls. What they say about the Ursuline sisterhood is really true.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

My dad had a quote. The gist of it is, “If you want to be a champion, you’re going to have to be willing to sacrifice.” The person that’s going to be able to sacrifice the most is the one that’s going to put themselves in the position to ultimately achieve their goal. You get injured and you’re rehabbing for eight months, and you just have to keep chugging along and finding ways to stay motivated.

What’s it like to be the daughter of a former professional athlete?

People think that because he was a professional athlete that he would push me in a lot of different directions and be super controlling and involved in everything, and that’s just not true. He played football; I play soccer. He’s never pretended to be the expert on soccer, which I so appreciate. When we were growing up, he taught us running mechanics. He’s always been in my corner, trying to help me, support me, get me whatever it is I need. But I don’t have two competing people saying different things.

What are your hopes for the future?

I would love for our team to win a couple more national championships and Pac-12 trophies. I would like to go pro, but I haven’t been thinking too much about it. I’m trying to stay as present as I can at the moment. I love the sport. I can’t imagine being done anytime soon. My dream job would be any role at Nike.

STRATEGIC WONDER

WHEN NOT WORKING AS A NORTHPARK EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, CATTLE BARON’S BALL BARONESS AND MOM KRISTEN GIBBINS

CAN BE FOUND POUNDING THE TENNIS COURT

PRESTON HOLLOW’S KRISTEN GIBBINS is executive director of marketing and strategy for NorthPark Center, what she calls the only “shopping museum” in the world. Gibbins began working with the Nancy Nasher-David Haemisegger family in 2005 when she was hired by Raymond Nasher to fill a marketing and public relations role at the Nasher Sculpture Center. After freelancing for NorthPark in 2008 as a publicist, Gibbins began working with Nancy Nasher and her daughter Sarah Haemisegger in 2015 to create the center’s 50th anniversary project, “50 Years of Giving,” in which NorthPark gave to 50 nonprofit organizations over the course of 50 days. Today, Gibbins oversees marketing, advertising, public relations and events for the center, under NorthPark owners Nancy Nasher and

David Haemisegger. In addition, Gibbins is serving a second term as a baroness for Cattle Baron’s Ball, the world’s No. 1 single-day fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. An avid tennis player, she captains several teams at Brookhaven Country Club. Gibbins lives with her husband, Reed, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, their two boys, Barrett, 11, and Grayson, 8, who attend St. Rita Catholic School, and beagles, Buddy and Beau.

What is your “third place” in the neighborhood, after home and work? When I’m not working, or playing tennis, I can be found at one of our neighborhood Central Markets. My husband is a fantastic amateur chef. We enjoy perusing the produce and meat sections together as a family in search of items on our grocery list. I always look forward to their “Passport” promotion when they offer foods from different parts of the world.

What is your favorite image of the neighborhood?

I enjoy seeing the development of community projects that bring people together in our neighborhood such as The Grove Church and Northaven Trail.

What accomplishment are you proud of in your career?

One of my proudest moments was at the press conference for NorthPark’s 50th anniversary in 2015 when I watched Nancy on the stage sharing the announcement about our “50 Years of Giving” initiative. It made me so proud to see her shine in that moment.

What misconceptions do people have about your business?

Sometimes people ask if brickand-mortar retail is here to stay. The answer is yes. NorthPark is here to stay. People will always crave connectivity and in-person experiences.

BETTER KNOW A NEIGHBOR
Interview by LISA KRESL / Photography by DANNY FULGENCIO Kristen Gibbins is photographed in clothing by Neiman Marcus NorthPark and jewelry from Eiseman Jewels NorthPark.

Besides work, what are you proud of? It sounds cliché, but I am proud of my kids. They have kind hearts. I admire their creativity.

What is the best gift you’ve ever received?

The greatest gift to me is genuine, meaningful relationships. Throughout my career, I have had the great fortune to be surrounded by people who advocate for me. It’s a gift I try to return for others whenever possible.

continue the tradition this year and invite the public to participate through our “NorthPark Gives Back” weekend from Sept. 20-22, where many of our retailers will donate a percentage back to the organization.

How do you achieve work-life balance?

I get up early to play tennis before I head to the office. Once I’m at work, I hunker down and stay focused for whatever comes my way, usually eating lunch at my desk. When I’m home, I focus on my kids’ activities and their homework needs. I’m still trying to figure it all out.

How do you relax?

Relaxing is overrated. I like to be productive. My husband cooks for us every night, so I find it relaxing to watch him master his skills and partake in his tasty dishes.

JAY PRESSON ALLEN THE HOCKADAY

Who is your greatest influence?

Nancy Nasher is by far the smartest, hardest working woman I know. She is also the most thoughtful and caring.

What’s your favorite spot at NorthPark? My favorite spot is underneath Mark di Suvero’s towering bright orange “Ad Astra” sculpture in NorthCourt. The title of the piece means “to the stars.” I appreciate its positive, uplifting message, which is one of strength and perseverance.

What neighborhood nonprofit do you support?

I am honored to be a member of the Cattle Baron’s Ball for the second year and thrilled to have NorthPark involved in the initiative. An incredible group of 100 ladies works tirelessly to raise money for the American Cancer Society. It’s the number one, single-day fundraiser in the world for ACS. Last year, my colleague and fellow baroness, Catharine Flagg, along with our NorthPark team led by Meredith Hays, and retailers, helped to raise nearly a half million dollars in auction items and funds for this initiative. We

If you could have dinner with any living person, who would it be?

I would pass this opportunity on to my husband to have dinner with renowned chef Thomas Keller. Reed regularly watches Keller’s “Master Classes” to learn elevated cooking techniques. I can only imagine the conversation they would have and the meals I would receive in return.

Who is one of your favorite artists? One of my favorite artists is Joel Shapiro, whose sculpture “20 Elements” is on view in Nordstrom Court at NorthPark. We had the pleasure to visit with him a few years ago when he invited Nancy Nasher to his studio. He was welcoming and showed us the materials and vibrant paints he uses. Besides the fact that he is an incredible artist, he is fun, funny and a great conversationalist.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Have fun. Life is short so don’t be afraid to be yourself and live a little.

This interview has been edited for clarity and brevity.

You have to admire Jay Presson Allen, who grew up in San Angelo, attended Hockaday and became a success, according to IMDb. She also dashed her Texas roots and took on Manhattan in the 1960s.

Allen became a playwright, stage director, TV producer, novelist and screenwriter (at a time when few women were screenwriters). Born in 1922, she died in 2006.

Three things to know:

1 Allen watched movies in a theater every Saturday and Sunday from 1-7 p.m. as a child. She said she left Hockaday, “having had no education to speak of.”

As a playwright, Allen wrote a dramatization of Muriel Spark’s novel “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.” Next, Alfred Hitchcock asked her to adapt Winston Graham’s novel “Marnie.” Additional projects included Bob Fosse’s “Cabaret” and Sidney Lumet’s “Prince of the City.”

3

Finally, Allen told the New York Times that the way to make a successful adaptation is to not “muck around with the essence” of the original work.

GAME DAY IS NEVER THE SAME AT MIDICI ITALIAN KITCHEN

IT’S COLLEGE GAME DAY at MidiCi Italian Kitchen, but instead of traditional nachos, you get the dish with an Italian twist: pita bread smothered in locally produced cheese and homemade marinara sauce.

What’s Italian for “yum” – “gnam, gnam”?

The restaurant is in Preston Hollow Village, across from Orangetheory, but regulars know they can expect four screens, a wood-burning stove for pizza and an inventive menu.

Chef Bobby Duncan Jr. speaks with a lilting Louisiana accent about his vision for the Neapolitan restaurant. He’s been working in the business since he was 15.

“I find new ways to do old dishes,” Duncan says. “I don’t want to just be that pizza place

next to the Douglas. I want to be that cool place where you get a glass of wine, get something small to eat or come in for dessert.”

Best-sellers include house meatballs, burrata with melon and prosciutto, the Italian and very berry salads as well as the Margherita and double pepperoni flatbreads. Many are partial to the devil’s pizza, which features Italian tomato sauce, mozzarella, house-made spicy sausage, spicy Italian salami and red chile. Bartender Matt “Zeke” Zika loves the devil’s slices. But he can also get a gluten-free crust.

Duncan has sourced Brazos cheese from Waco, North Italian Coffee from White Rock Coffee, wine from Times Ten Cellars and beer from Oak Highlands Brewery. He’s added

Meanwhile, Zika creates drinks that you never knew you wanted: “The Drink You Had in Cancun Last Summer” is a sweet concoction with tequila, pineapple juice and raspberry syrup. And then there’s “Something Sweet,” which is amazingly blue.

GOLDIE’S GOLDEN LIFE

Vegan Vincelee Stevens keeps a 175-pound pig in her closet. It’s where Goldie prefers to sleep, nestled in a puppy bed from Restoration Hardware. During the day, Goldie comes and goes through the dog door, basking in the sun and entertaining neighbors on Midbury Drive. She has regular visitors and is housebroken. She cools off in a pink kiddie pool full of fresh water and enjoys having her belly rubbed.

“You cannot lift her up,” Steven says. “Pigs do not like to leave the ground. If we lift her up, you’ve never heard such screams.”

Goldie’s favorite food is overripe fruit and veggies, including carrots, tomatoes and strawberries. “We can get her to do anything for strawberries.” Neighbors donate produce in Goldie’s front-yard Yeti. The pig’s palate is

accustomed to variety.

Stevens and her 9-year-old son are currently coaxing Goldie to wear a harness for neighborhood strolls.

“She has so much personality and is easy,” Stevens says. “When she gets bored, that is not good. A bored pig is terrible. She’ll root and destroy things. I try to talk to Goldie and say, ‘Don’t spoil the yard.’”

JAKE, CAPTAIN UNDERDOG

Jake was an underweight mess before he met Maggie. Now, as Forrest Gump would say, the two are like peas and carrots.

Jake was what owner Ashley Allcorn calls a “foster fail” in 2015. Allcorn, who had fostered dogs for Dallas Pets Alive! in the past, was representing Dallas Animal Services in New York trying to facilitate transfers of animals from Dallas to New York to ease the high volume of dogs coming into the Dallas shelters.

While walking the kennels with the New York rescue representative, Allcorn spotted Jake, who at 18 pounds was a tragic sight. “He barely had hair,” she says. “His nose was completely bare, but he wagged his tail, and he had this cute personality. I thought, ‘This is totally the underdog. He could be so cute if someone gave him the time.’”

Jake captured her heart. She snapped a photo of him and told the woman at the front desk to call her if Jake made the euthanasia list. Allcorn returned

to Dallas, and three days later, New York representatives called her about Jake. He was on the kill list. Allcorn returned to New York, thinking she would foster him. She reached out to her contacts at Dallas Pets Alive! to sponsor him. He had heartworms and a respiratory infection, and she committed to keeping him healthy.

While Allcorn was nursing him through two months of medical treatment, Jake began wooing housemate Maggie, an older female who is quiet and particular. “He started to bond with Maggie,” Allcorn says. Maggie, a mutt, is a steadying force. “They’d play and lie on the floor and cuddle,” she remembers. “It became really sweet. He knew he was in a safe place. He blossomed into this hilarious terrier. He’s a loud, barky, spunky dog. I just couldn’t let him go. He’s been with us ever since.”

Now Allcorn has a newborn, and she adopted a third dog, Beau. She calls the dogs the three amigos. “They love each other and play constantly.”

Jake now weighs 25 pounds and has his own Instagram account: @JustJakinAround.

SOMEBUNNY SPECIAL

Cassie Evans Decker once volunteered to have the skin from her butt transferred to her cat Chester. The treasured pet had a tumor on his elbow, but there wasn’t enough skin to close the wound if the vet removed it.

“I can’t put your butt skin on your cat’s leg,” the vet explained. “He will reject it.” Instead the vet removed Chester’s leg. “He came declawed on the front, so I had a oneclawed cat.” Chessy died in February. “He was a three-legged cat,” she says, “but he was such a trouper.”

Decker is now foster mom to two cavalier king Charles rescues, Bucky and Rusty, and two bunnies for Dallas Pets Alive! The bunnies reside with her parents. A single mom to 4-year-old daughter Hattie Pearl, Decker felt a connection with the mother-son duo, Thumper Thumperton and Hoppy Hopperton. Decker’s husband took his own life when Hattie was 12 weeks old, and she couldn’t bear to separate the two

bunnies. “I felt bad for the mom because Thumper was a single mom just like me.”

Early photos of Hoppy show the bunny nestled in Hattie’s dollhouse bed tucked in with a dollhouse duvet. The baby is now double the size of the mom. The fluffy pair eat kale, watercress, fresh basil and sweet potatoes (the sweet potato diet has resulted in an orange double chin for Hoppy).

Hoppy is tamer because he’s known the family from an early age. “Hattie loves to kiss his face and head.”

PRESTON HOLLOW PET PEEVES

Norah Meier-Maroulis is a Kentucky girl who was shocked at the number of street dogs when she moved to Dallas. She started rescuing diseased and abused pups, sneaking them into her apartment, cleaning and vaccinating them. In 2006, she started a Facebook page called Dallas Strays and Rescues, which is packed with tips and help for lost or stolen pets. In addition to her day job selling commercial furniture, the Preston Hollow neighbor is social media marketing and advertising coordinator for EARS, the Education and Animal Rescue Society.

When she’s not combing the neighborhood on bulk trash day, looking for abandoned pet supplies to donate to shelters, she lives with husband, Steven, and a pack of dogs that includes Waffles, Dakota, O’Reilly and Kyoto, a doberman mix. Kyoto kept setting off a Ring Doorbell alert when he came to steal cat food off the porch. The foster mom feeds the dogs kale, carrots, blueberries, pureed pumpkin, zucchini, squash and banana. Catch her walking her pack off Azalea Lane between Edgemere and Hillcrest, but don’t be surprised if she has a thing or two to say. Here’s MeierMaroulis unleashed:

Dog-life hack

Add hot water, smelly fish oils, fruit, vegetable and organic coconut oil to dry dog food, suggests Norah MeierMaroulis, social media coordinator for EARS.

n She’s distraught by neighbors who don’t abide by the leash laws. “People feel entitled. If they have a small dog, they don’t think they need to leash it. It just takes one time for a dog to chase that squirrel, one time to attack another dog, one time for something bad to happen. When I walk my pack, they are always on harnesses. They have lights during the evening.”

n She’s distressed by neighbors who dump new and gently used pet accessories without donating them to shelters. “We’re all privileged around here, and we just want to haul stuff to the curb and be done with it.”

n She’s ticked off about neighbors who leave dogs in their cars. “I will go into Whole Foods and Walgreens and say, ‘Someone has left their dog in the car. Announce it over the PA, or I’ll call the police and fire department.’ Some people get nasty about it. You’re running in to get a Diet Coke and you’re killing your dog.”

n She’s annoyed by neighbors who don’t clean up after their dogs. “You should always pick up the poop because the rats will go after it.”

n She wants to re-educate neighbors who outfit their dogs with retractable leashes. “They’re bad

training tools, teaching your dog it has no boundary. One lady reached out to me on NextDoor, saying she had gotten tangled up in one and it actually slit her neck.” Meier-Maroulis recommends a 6-foot leash and a harness.

n She prefers neighbors who opt out of pronged choke collars. “They’re painful devices that can cause puncture wounds. Dogs will associate that pain with walks.”

n She wishes neighbors would provide end-of-life directives for their pets. “We assume a family member will take care of the pet, but the kids say, ‘I don’t have time. I don’t want to deal with it.’ And they dump them. You would be surprised how many pets end up in the shelter and get put to sleep.”

n She detests neighbors who put dogs in truck beds. “It’s illegal in Dallas, and you have the right to call and report it.”

LIVING BEAUTIFULLY IN PRESTON HOLLOW

IN THE LAND OF MEREDITH LAND

Surprising ways the news anchor finds sanctuary in Greenway Parks

Meredith Land opens the door of her 4,500-square-foot Greenway Parks home at 9 a.m., perfectly made up but dressed in a dainty bathrobe. Even though she’s still dressing and returned home late after her 10 p.m. anchor gig the night before, she welcomes us with Charleston southern charm. In fact, she and her husband are friends with Shep, the main character in reality TV’s “Southern Charm.”

But unlike Shep, she’s hardworking, with substance, grace, authenticity and a sense of purpose. She’s also a mom. Land is the real deal, the main anchor on NBC 5 News reporting at 5, 6 and 10 p.m. weekdays. Land earned a national Gracie Award for her story about a groundbreaking treatment that stopped a young girl’s seizures. She has been nominated for five Lone Star Emmy awards and has won investigative reporting awards from the Associated Press and South Carolina Broadcaster’s Association. She was also awarded a STAR award for producing and reporting a 30-minute special from Afghanistan. In addition, Land serves on the national advisory board for the Laura W. Bush Institute for Women’s Health, as well as the advisory board of the Salvation Army DFW Metroplex Command.

Land has lived in the house with her husband, Xan, and two children, McCall and Alexander, for five years. This explains why she has a comfy, dorm-sized bed in the walkin closet of her home’s master bedroom. Outfitted with a flat screen TV and a copy of Vogue, the space is perfect for when she comes home after a news shift and wants to decompress without waking up her family.

Her goals when building the home: When we found the house, it was the lot that we loved most. We had visions of adding onto it, but the deeper we got into it, we realized we needed to start from scratch. We razed the home and came up with a design that would be livable for a modern family with natural light and comfortable living spaces. The centerpiece is the kitchen.

Her favorite room:

I love the living room off our kitchen. I wanted to cover everything in the same fabric: Quadrille Arbre de Matisse, inspired by Tory Burch’s Manhattan office. It’s a happy spot where the children read, my daughter practices violin and friends gather without the distraction of a television. The centerpiece of the room is a painting by one of President George W. Bush’s art instructors, Gail Norfleet. President Bush asked me to moderate a panel of his three art instructors at the Bush Center a couple of years ago. I was especially drawn to Gail’s work. She painted this multi-dimensional piece with transparent layers of flowers for me, and I will cherish it forever.

Why she loves Greenway Parks:

Our children live on the greenbelt behind our house. They climb trees and play with neighbors, many of whom go to different schools. It’s the childhood my husband and I had back home.

september 2019 prestonhollow.advocatemag.com 23

Her typical day:

During the school year, I am up at 6:45 a.m. I fix breakfast for the kids, fill water bottles, sign off on homework and race out the door to drop them at school. Some days I will exercise and others I nap. I am always plugged in to what’s happening in the newsroom but have struck a balance between busy life as a mom and journalist.

On work-life balance:

Some weeks I feel like I am nailing it, and others, I am a complete failure. I think all mothers feel this way, whether they work or stay at home. I try to cut myself some slack. My job requires me to be incredibly “on” and engaging, so carving out even 30 minutes to do nothing in my home is always a good idea.

Advice she’d give to her younger self: Find a strong female mentor who can help you navigate the political landscape of newsrooms, corporate America – all the things you don’t learn in school.

What neighbors would be surprised to know: I don’t watch TV at all. I’m not proud of it. I want to have a show to look forward to. My hours don’t allow for that variety of downtime.

DID YOU KNOW?

Meredith Land’s family loves to eat at Hudson House and Mesero.

What she does for fun:

I work at night, so weekends are important to my family. We love being home, swimming, riding bikes, playing games, cooking. When the kids go to bed, my husband and I catch up outside on the back porch.

Her proudest moment:

The birth of my children. We struggled with fertility and were just so proud to finally be parents.

What’s most challenging for her:

Staying energized for my family and career. The days can be long. I remind myself how fortunate I am to have both.

On what it’s like to be recognized in the neighborhood: Most of the time there is this hesitation. “How do I know this woman?” It happened the other day, and my friend Louise finally said, “She’s on the news!” I look different in person without the makeup and LEGO hair.

FETCH AND SKETCH

FOURTEEN-YEAR-OLD Mia Barnett likes animals and art so much that she’s started a business combining her two passions. The Dallas Lutheran School student creates charcoal drawings and acrylic paintings of pets.

“I was always amazed by how sparkly their eyes are in the sun and the way their fur sweeps across their body,” she says. A charcoal work on black paper won first in state at the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools. Barnett hopes to attend Savannah College of Art and Design.

Her collection of pets includes Ricardo, a Chihuahua/rat terrier mix, a rescue with a collar made in Guatemala, and a cat named Beans. At school, she volunteers to care for hamsters, a spotted leopard gecko, an iguana, a snake, gerbils and spiders. Over the summer, she welcomed the school’s gerbils into her home: Pamplemousse, Pêche, Napoleon Dynamite, Sasha, Milan and Raj.

Barnett created a presentation and speech for her parents on why she deserved to have a gerbil. The student volunteered at Operation Kindness, with a goal of logging 100 hours over the summer.

Mom Laura Barnett says she tells her daughter, “We have so many animals, and we’ve got full-time jobs. We’ve got way too much on our plates to foster animals.” Her daughter responds, “When I have my own house, I’m going to have 10 dogs.”

Barnett’s business goal is to raise $10,000 so she can buy

a VW bus and travel. She’s already secured $3,000.

“I think people should definitely get a pet,” she says. “Once in a while they poop in your closet, but the good times outweigh the bad ones.”

Gourd-geous Gardens

While North Haven Gardens launched as a roadside neighborhood nursery 68 years ago, it’s blossomed into a mini cultural center with garden-themed classes, festivals, a gallery and even a quaint café. Tucked into the nursery at 7700 Northaven Road, the café menu reflects the garden setting with crisp salads, artisanal sandwiches and sumptuous desserts — along with wine, beer and cocktails.
