What’s one experience every visitor to Halifax should have?
What’s the ideal place to find a unique made-in-Halifax memento?
Explore the historic Halifax Waterfront along Lower Water and Upper Water streets. Between the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 (page EC7) on the south end and the Historic Properties (page EC3) and Casino Nova Scotia (page 21) on the north end, you can explore the local shops, take a photo at the Canada 150 sign, stroll on the new floating pedestrian-only sea bridge, or grab a bite at one of the many restaurants along the way.
In the heart of the bustle of Spring Garden Road, Jennifer’s of Nova Scotia (page 51) features works from 140+ Nova Scotian crafters and artisans. The vast selection includes jewelry, pottery, pewter works, woodwork, and—just in time for autumn’s chill—woolens aplenty.
What’s the best way to spend a rainy afternoon in Halifax? Visit the new Halifax Central Library (page EC1) on Spring Garden Road. Internationally acclaimed for its outstanding architectural design, the library boasts a huge collection, free Wi-Fi and Internet access, and a fantastic view of peninsular Halifax. There’s a café on site, and the library frequently hosts readings, book launches, and special events.
What’s your favourite day-trip destination for people staying in Halifax? You can’t beat picturesque Lunenburg. Famed for its well preserved distinctive architecture, this historic fishing down is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the home port for Nova Scotia’s iconic Bluenose II schooner (featured on the Canadian dime). It’s only about an hour’s drive from Halifax.
What’s the best thing about autumn in Halifax? A walk through the Halifax Public Gardens (page EC1). This historic green space is home to the finest formal Victorian gardens in Canada, and a perfect place to explore the season in all its glorious colour. OCTOBER 2017

If you’re the kind of music fan
who loves to discover emerging acts and innovative talents, going to concerts to hear music you won’t hear on the radio or top-40 play lists, you picked a great month to visit Halifax. Returning from October 18 to 21, the Halifax Pop Explosion (page 22) presents 150 musical acts, comedians, and speakers at venues around the city. This year marks HPX’s 25th anniversary, which organizers are marking by putting a bigger focus on reflecting under-represented communities. For example, this year’s speaker series will include Colombian-born, Toronto-based singer and multiinstrumentalist and activist Lido Pimienta. For the second year, HPX also features the Canadian Label Summit, hosting representatives from record labels all over Canada, the U.S., and the U.K. They’ll discuss challenges in the music industry while discovering up-and-coming musical talents. And those musical acts are the festival’s chief draw.
It all kicks off on October 18, as Metz and Not You share the stage at the Marquee Ballroom on Gottingen with the Halifax-based melodic pop-punk group Crossed Wires. Meanwhile, the Seahorse Tavern (conveniently located downstairs at the Marquee, hosts Yamantaka / Sonic Titan, Elliott Brood, Lou Canon, and Aron D’Alesio.
