knows how well-suited these new Subaru models are for enjoying the most challeng“While they’re beautiful cars for every day,” Paynter says, “they’re built for getting you further up the road and deeper into the wilderness.” On the East Coast, there’s always a scenic lookoff, waterfall or patch of wilderness as the payoff. The new Wilderness models are cleverly designed to handle everything a rough road can throw at it. Under the hood, the formidable Subaru Boxer engine with X-Mode is a real workhorse. “They’re very peppy right out of the block,” Paynter says. “And yet, I can stop on a back road hill, then restart without turning a rock. I’m never over 1,500 RPM when I’m running over rough terrain. Subarus can do what many four-wheel drive trucks can’t.” The Subaru Wilderness models are loaded with off-road extras, starting with a front facing camera, as well as one in the back. “When you’re up those narrow roads, you can see what’s coming at you,” Paynter says. The suspension height has been increased; extra tough body cladding and skid plates have been added. All-terrain tires are standard. Carry that kayak or canoe closer to the river with more confidence because of the new roof rails with increased load capacity. As a PEI native, Paynter enjoys roaming the island, these days as a tourist. “You see things and meet people you otherwise wouldn’t,” he says. Last summer, he drove the back roads in search of uncommon seafood experiences. He found one at Howard’s Cove Shellfish where he relived childhood memories when his family would go on road trips and buy buckets of quahogs. “We used to eat some like raw oysters right there, and take the rest home.” Don’t be shy to meet new people and ask questions, Paynter recommends. East Coasters are uncommonly friendly and want nothing more than for visitors to enjoy themselves.

saltscapes.com/expo

When he’s on the road in New Brunswick and has some extra time, his favourite detour is through Fundy National Park. “I just love that drive,” Paynter says. In Newfoundland, Paynter has driven the width of the island and back many times. Starting in St. John’s, most recently he and some friends explored the Avalon Peninsula before setting off for the west coast. “On our way, we drove down every side road until we couldn’t go any further.” When they reached Gros Morne National Park, they drove across the red-hued Earth’s mantle, one of the only places on the planet where it has heaved above the surface, making it one of the world’s most uncommon experiences. East Coast drives offer significant challenges for a car, but Subaru’s Wilderness models are equal to the task. “If you’re off road, in the snow or mud, the X-Mode changes the car altogether. As a test,” Paynter reco m m e n d s , “find a steep hill, stop and press X-Mode. The car will walk down that hill without a sign of slide. It’s fun to experience.” In Nova Scotia, Paynter enjoys the South Shore where he says he could spend at least a week exploring the back roads on his way to his favourite outing, a whale watching trip from Briar Island. “Not only is the drive down Digby Neck beautiful, the guides put you right in the middle of a pod of whales, then shut down the engines.” He remembers looking into the eye of a humpback calf that surfaced beside the boat. In Cape Breton Highlands National Park, a Subaru Wilderness model will easily conquer the winding, hilly, graveled 10-kilometre road to the beautiful Mary Ann Falls. It’s one of the most photogenic in the province and a popular swimming destination. “The Subaru shines because it does all this in a price range lower than pretty well anything else,” Paynter adds. At the same time, Subarus have demonstrated they place among the best for resale value. Look for Paynter and the Subaru exhibit at the Saltscapes Expo 2022. It’ll be the one with all the outdoor gear—kayaks, camping gear, packs—to outfit a Subaru Wilderness model for uncommon backcountry experiences. “I’m a car guy,” Paynter says. “When I retire, I’ll still be driving a Subaru, doing things with my Wilderness model that most people know their cars can’t do.” It’s easy to imagine bumping into him deep down some Parks Canada access road, seeking out some breathtakingly beautiful waterfall or scenic lookoff in his Wilderness Subaru. subaru.ca

Fabulous Fredericton puts out the welcome mat Welcoming people back to the riverside capital

“THE SALTSCAPES EXPO is always a great way to kick off the summer season, and we are excited to be back,” Holly Kirkpatrick says. She’s the consumer and leisure market coordinator with Fredericton Tourism. “This show is great for us because the attendees are qualified travellers who are interested in hearing what Fredericton has to offer,” she says. “Our craft beer scene and the Harvest Music Festival are always popular topics of discussion.” They’re so thrilled, they’re giving away money! Drop by the Fredericton booth at the Saltscapes Expo 2022 for a chance to win a Dinner On Us package that comes with accommodations and 50 Downtown Dollars or Business Fredericton North Dollars—they may even have an extra incentive up their sleeve! These two local currencies support small businesses in New Brunswick’s riverside capital. Or just book a Stay & Play package in Fredericton to receive the same bonus dollars, plus free parking. While there, pick up some of the city’s other local currency, Brew Bucks, and hit the Fredericton Taproom Trail to sample craft beers at ten taprooms. Kirkpatrick and her team are so enthusiastic about their city, they’re sure to inspire plans for a weekend getaway or a week-long stay. One of the best ways to enjoy Fredericton is at the renowned Harvest Music Festival, held every autumn in the city centre. Check in with Kirkpatrick’s team for more music mania as the city gears up to host the 2022 East Coast Music Awards in May. Whoot! The Fredericton visual arts scene is also flourishing. Stop by the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design booth to meet artisans offering hands-on demonstrations. Kings Landing is will also be in attendance and will have lots of information on what they will be offering this summer. TourismFredericton.ca
