Publisher’s Welcome Welcome to Northeast Harbor! You have chosen to visit one of the most naturally beautiful places in the country — Mount Desert Island. This PORT DIRECTORY is intended to enhance the time you spend in this area by providing easy access to information about places to stay, things to do and see, activities, and places to dine, among other things. In the back of the book, you will find an extensive index of merchants. Also useful are the marina rules, rates and telephone numbers, tide charts, museum listings, church services, maps of Northeast Harbor, Cranberry Islands, Bar Harbor and Southwest Harbor as well as a full map of Mount Desert Island in the center section. It is our hope that the Port Directory will serve as a helpful reference book for the visitor, tourist, summer and year–round resident. We want this publication to be useful, fresh, fun, and appealing. Keep it aboard your boat, in your home, by your phone, or in your car. For additional copies, please ask at a place of business, Chamber of Commerce office, or just contact us. As we are a member of the Maine Tourism Association, our books can also be found at most visitor centers throughout the state. There was a point in March (and even April) that we were beginning to wonder if this was going to be another year that summer wasn’t going to come to Maine like in 1816! However, the promise of spring and warm weather seems to be here ... and we are ever so thankful. Good weather isn’t promised, and we need to do the best we can with what we get. I hope your time here will be filled with some sunshine, a little rain, and temperate climates. Lemon BLueBerry Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting

Cake Cream Cheese Frosting: 1 1/2 cups cake flour 12 oz. cream cheese, softened 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened 2 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. vanilla extract 1/4 tsp. baking soda 1/4 tsp. lemon extract 3/4 tsp. salt 3 cups powdered sugar 2 cups granulated sugar Blueberries and lemon slices, for garnish 1 cup unsalted butter, softened (optional) 1 Tbsp. lemon zest 4 large eggs 2 tsp. lemon extract 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract 3/4 cup + 2 Tbsp. milk 1/4 cup + 2 Tbsp. sour cream 2 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice 2 1/2 cups fresh blueberries, at room temperature, rinsed and drained well Preheat oven to 350Ë&#x161;. Butter three 9â&#x20AC;? round baking pans and line the bottom of each with a round of parchment paper. Butter parchment paper and lightly dust pan with flour, shaking out excess. Sift cake flour into a mixing bowl. Add all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt and whisk for 30 seconds. Whip together (scraping sides down, occasionally) butter, granulated sugar and lemon zest until mixture is pale and fluffy. In a 2-cup liquid measuring cup, measure out milk then stir in sour cream and lemon juice, let rest 3 minutes. Meanwhile, mix eggs into butter mixture one at a time, then stir in lemon and vanilla extracts. Toss blueberries with 3 Tbsp. of the flour mixture. Working in 3 separate batches, beginning & ending with remaining flour mixture, add 1/3 of the flour mixture alternating with 1/2 of the milk mixture and mixing just until

combined after each addition. Gently fold in blueberries. Divide the mixture evenly among prepared baking pans. Bake in preheated oven until toothpick inserted into center comes out clean, about 24-27 minutes. Cool in baking pans about 20-30 minutes, then invert onto wire racks to cool completely. Once cool, frost with cream cheese frosting & decorate with blueberries & lemon slices if desired. Store in an airtight container. Cream Cheese Frosting: Whip butter until pale and fluffy (you will want to have a smooth and fluffy consistency each time you add ingredients). Mix in cream cheese. Add vanilla and lemon extracts and powdered sugar; blend several minutes (if frosting seems slightly runny, you can chill it for a bit before frosting cake). This cake seems like it could be difficult to make with all the ingredients, but it isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really ... and well worth making this for any occasion - truly delicious and especially when the Maine Blueberries are in season. 1 cup very coarsely chopped broccoli (frozen florets, defrosted overnight, dried w/paper towels) 3/4 cup (3 oz) sharp provolone, grated 6 eggs, whisked 1/2 cup heavy cream Dash nutmeg Salt and Pepper Preheat oven to 350˚.

Spray four 8oz. ramekins. Layer broccoli and cheese in each ramekin. Whisk eggs, heavy cream, nutmeg and salt & pepper to taste. Pour over layers a scant 1/4 cup measure at a time and let “soak in” before additional pours. You may have some egg mixture left over. Soufflés will rise as they bake, so don’t overfill. Place on rimmed baking sheet and bake for 35 mins or until knife inserted into center comes clean. Lightly cover w/aluminum foil after 20 mins, if browning too quickly. Let rest on wire rack. Run knife around edges, invert to release, then turn right-side-up and serve on a warm bed of greens. Note: Any veggies and/or cooked meats with complimentary shredded cheese can be used – great for leftovers! Pamela Parker, Kingsleigh Inn

Haddock FisH cakes 1 lb. skinless haddock 2 Tbsp. lemon juice 2 Tbsp. white wine 1 egg 3/4 cup panko crumbs 1 white potato (cooked mashed) 1/4 cup whole milk 1/2 tsp. lemon zest 1 Tbsp. fresh flatleaf parsley (chopped) 1 Tbsp. fresh chives (chopped) 4 Tbsp. oil Sauce 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1 Tbsp. of capers (chopped) 1 tsp. horseradish 1 tsp. dijon mustard 1 small very finley chopped shallot Season haddock with lemon juice and white wine, bake in oven for 15-20 minutes at 350Ë&#x161;; let cool. Meanwhile, mix the sauce ingredients and set aside. Dice potato then boil until soft then let cool. In a mixing bowl add fish, potato, egg, panko crumbs, milk, lemon zest, parsley, and chives mix together. Divide the fish cake mixture into four cakes. Heat a large frying pan and add oil to pan. Fry the fish cakes over medium heat for about 5 minutes on each side, until crisp and golden. Serve with the sauce.

5 cups peeled, chopped pears 1 seeded chopped lemon 1 cup brown sugar 1/4 t. cayenne pepper 2 chopped, seeded red bell pepper 1/3 cup chopped ginger root 2 minced garlic cloves 1 cup currents 2 tbs. curry 2 cups cider vinegar

Island Readers & Writers (IRW) recently celebrated a decade of bringing innovative, book-centered programs to school children living on Mount Desert Island, the outer islands and inland communities of Washington County. Now based in Southwest Harbor, the organization got its start at the former Port in a Storm Bookstore in Somesville and is now going on eleven years as a thriving nonprofit. Its core mission is to inspire a passion for reading and learning among children living on Maine’s outer islands and inland islands of WashSWEET ington County. Budding artists show off their creativity during an IRW story and activity hour at the IRW’s programs are thoughtfully designed to augment the quality of Southwest Harbor Public Library.

A group of seventh and eighth graders from Mount Desert Elementary School delivered over 1,000 books they collected for IRW’s book drive to benefit elementary school libraries in Texas affected by Hurricane Harvey in fall 2017.

This our 11th season of presenting an outdoor activity in the Northeast Harbor Port Directory. In the past we have featured hikes, bike rides, a canoe trip and a kayak trip. This year we are presenting a nondemanding hike that we did last fall. We enjoyed it and we hope you do too. We followed a loop using some of the Northeast Harbor trails in the area of Schoolhouse Ledge and the Northeast Harbor Golf Club. This roughly 2 mile hike explores an area just outside the village of Northeast Harbor and is interesting in that it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t leave civilization for

long. While there are some secluded stretches through the woods and some beautiful natural scenery, there are also residences nearby and you pass by the Northeast Harbor Golf Course. These trails are maintained by the Northeast Harbor Village Improvement Society. Established in 1898, the Northeast Harbor Village Improvements Society has recently been making improvements to these trails. Some improvements that were especially appreciated were the new railings that helped going down some of the steeper embankments! And the stone steps appear in place so effortlessly … yet we KNOW a lot of effort and hard work went into the seamlessness of what nature provided and what was assisted by those working on the trails. The trail leaves the left side of the parking area. Up ahead turn right at the “Trailhead” sign and climb moderately over an old paved footpath called the Schoolhouse Ledge Trail. You will cross over an old water pipe as you pass by two residences. Please be respectful in this area by staying on the path and keeping your noise down. Also avoid stepping on any of the pipes you may come across during this hike. (Or any hike for that matter!) As you climb a bit more over a pleasant woods path, you will turn right staying on the Schoolhouse Ledge Trail. Be sure to look in all directions at the beauty you will find in this solitude. Up, down, left, right … a great way to commune with nature. Live

That being said, DO keep an eye on the trail which is covered with roots that are slippery when wet. (Editor’s Note: Yes, my mind was on the article instead of where I was going, so I slipped and fell!) Stay left on the Schoolhouse Ledge Trail and climb gently. Pass by the Harborside Trail and the Reservoir Trail on the right staying left on the Schoolhouse Ledge Trail. Descend slightly and pass the Cliff Trail on the right following the sign for “Golf Club.” Shortly take a right on the Golf Club Trail and descend gently. On the left, views of the golf course open up as cliffs rise abruptly on the right. The trail steps down with a rough-hewn railing and levels out through open woods. As you pass the pump house for the Mount Desert Water District above on the right, cross Hadlock Stream on a footbridge. Soon after you will see more views of the Golf Club are

on the left. The trail crosses over the tee off area for hole 4. Be sure to follow the rock cairns on the other side of the tee area to continue on the trail. As you continue on the trail, views of Acadia and Saint Sauveur mountains are on the left. You will now ascend over rocks through an open area and take a sharp right on the Old Reservoir Trail. After climbing a bit more the trail levels out and re-crosses Hadlock Brook on a footbridge. Proceeding through nice, open woods the old reservoir appears on the left and you will walk along the old dam. This is a beautifully lush area. Very different from mountain hikes! Further on, you will cross a gravel road belonging to the Mount Desert Water Company. Cross the road and pick up the Cliff Trail on the other side. You will go straight on the Cliff Trail. The Asticou Trail leaves on the left. As you climb gently, you will now enter a tranquil area where

cliffs are on your left. The rock formations are rather striking and there is also a small cave tucked away in the rocks. It is almost reminiscent of The Flintstones (or maybe The Jetsons meets The Flintstones) … at least we thought so. I guess now we’re dating ourselves! The Cliff Trail descends and rejoins the Schoolhouse Ledge Trail and the Golf Club Trail. Bear left and then straight on the Schoolhouse Ledge Trail. We decided to detour and take a left on the Harborside Trail and descend into dense woods. If you do this, you will turn right on a grassy road which is the Bridle Path. This pleasant walk will take you to Delights Road. This is a paved private road that services a few residences. Turn right on Delights Road and soon after, turn right again on a trail marked, “To Schoolhouse Ledge”. This “spur” trail connects to the Schoolhouse Ledge Trail where you will turn left and return to the back to the parking area where we began. acadia’s historic carriage roads Used by permission from Acadia National Park.

Forty-five miles of rustic carriage roads, the gift of philanthropist John D. Rockefeller Jr. and family, weave around the mountains and valleys of Acadia National Park. Rockefeller, a skilled horseman, wanted to travel on motor-free byways via horse and carriage into the heart of Mount Desert Island. His construction efforts from 1913 to 1940 resulted in roads with sweeping vistas and close-up views of the landscape. His love of road building ensured a state-of-the-art system. Rockefeller’s interest in road building grew naturally from his father’s. John D. Rockefeller Sr., the founder of Standard Oil, had built and landscaped carriage roads on his Ohio and New York estates. From his father the junior Rockefeller learned many techniques that he applied to building his Mount Desert Island carriage roads. State-of-the-Art Roads Acadia’s carriage roads are the best example of broken-stone roads—a type of road commonly used at the turn of the 20th century—in America today. They are true roads, approximately 16 feet wide, constructed with methods that required much hand labor. The roads were engineered to contend with Maine’s wet weather. Stone culverts, wide ditches, three layers of rock, and a substantial six- to eight-inch crown ensured good drainage. Rather than flattening hill- © Bayside Graphics sides to accommodate the roads, breast walls and retaining walls were built to preserve the line of hillsides and save trees. Rockefeller, naturally gifted with the eye of a landscape architect, aligned the roads to follow the contours of the land and to take advantage of scenic views. He graded the roads so they were not too steep or too sharply curved for horse-drawn carriages. Road crews quarried island granite for road material and bridge facing. Roadsides were landscaped with native vegetation such as blueberries and sweet fern. The use of native materials helped blend the roads into the natural landscape. An Integrated System Rockefeller participated in the construction process. He walked areas staked out for road alignment and observed work in progress. He knew the laborers by name and used experts to design the bridges and engineer the roads. Throughout it all, he paid rapt attention to the most minute details, from the placement of coping stones to the cost of a running foot of road. Following are some elements that unify the carriage road system: Coping Stones Large blocks of granite lining the roads serve as guardrails. Cut roughly and spaced irregularly, the coping stones create a rustic appearance. These coping stones have been affectionately called “Rockefeller’s teeth.”

Signposts Cedar signposts were installed at intersections to direct carriage drivers. The posts were stained with Cabots shingle stain #248. The lettering was painted first with one coat of flat yellow paint, then with another coat of enamel yellow. T Today, numbers that match maps and guidebooks are attached to the signposts and help carriage road users find their way. Roadside Grooming and Landscaping Rockefeller employed a crew of foresters to remove debris from the roads and roadsides. Nationally known landscape architect Beatrix Farrand consulted on planting designs to frame vistas and bridges and to heal scars left behind by carriage road construction. The Fire of 1947 destroyed much of her work. Gate Lodges Two gate lodges, one at Jordan Pond and the other near Northeast Harbor, ornament the roads and serve as impressive welcomes to the system. A third gate lodge was planned at Eagle Lake, but was never built. During carriage road construction, engineer Paul Simpson and his family lived at the Jordan Pond Gate Lodge. Bridges

Rockefeller financed 16 of 17 stonefaced bridges, each unique in design, to span streams, waterfalls, roads, and cliffsides. The bridges are steel-reinforced concrete, but the use of native stone for the facing gives them a natural appearance. Over time, the stone cutters grew very skilled and Rockefeller often requested them not to cut the facing too well lest the rustic look be lost. The result of Rockefeller’s vision and attention to detail is an integrated system of carriage roads that blends harmoniously with the landscape. The Carriage Roads Today Maintaining the extensive carriage road system is no easy task, and the National Park Service could not do it alone. Between 1992 and 1995, an extensive rehabilitation of the carriage roads was financed by federal www.visitnortheastharbor.com

construction funds along with matching private funds from Friends of Acadia, a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the outstanding natural beauty, ecological vitality, and cultural distinctiveness of Acadia National Park and surrounding communities. Woody vegetation was removed from roads, shoulders, and ditches, and drainage systems were reestablished to arrest erosion. The crown and subgrade layers were restored, and new surface materials were applied to replace thousands of cubic yards washed away over the years. Coping stones were reset or replaced, and some of the historic vistas that once greeted horseback riders, carriage drivers, and walkers were reopened. To ensure that the carriage roads will continue to be maintained close to their original condition, the park has formed a partnership with Friends of Acadia. In 1995, Friends of Acadia established an endowment to help protect the carriage roads in perpetuity. Each year, the organization contributes more than $200,000 from this endowment to the park for carriage road maintenance. Volunteers working under the guidance of Friends of Acadia contribute thousands of hours cleaning ditches and culverts, clearing brush, and assisting park staff with other restoration projects. The commitment demonstrated by Friends of Acadia in maintaining the carriage roads is only one of many ways the organization helps support the park. © Friends of Acadia A portion of park user fees, authorized by the Recreational Fee Demonstration Program, also helps fund carriage road maintenance. Between 2001 and 2004, federal funds and park user fees paid for a major re-pointing, cleaning, and water-proofing of all carriage road bridges within the park. User fees have also funded annual projects, including repairing stone walls and opening overgrown vistas. More than one hundred vistas have been cleared in the past ten years.

The The beauty beauty of of the the Azalea Azalea Garden Garden changes changes and and evolves evolves throughout throughout the the year. A flowering cherry tree heralds the start of the season in mid-May, followed by azaleas and rhododendrons in many hues in late May through June. July blooms include Japanese iris, smoke bush, rosebay rhododendron, and the fragrant sweet azalea. The Thuya Garden and surrounding land is a wonderful blend of semiformal English border beds and indigenous eastern Maine woodlands situated on a granite hillside overlooking Northeast Harbor. Visitors by sea can tie up at Asticou Terraces Landing and walk up the 1/4– mile Asticou Terrace Trail to the garden and lodge, passing the Joseph H. Curtis Memorial and enjoying the views from several lookouts along the way. Parking is available at the landing and at the top of Thuya Drive.
