BBQ EXCHANGES AT AREA BUSINESSES. CALL FOR LOCATIONS
Publisher’s Welcome Welcome to Southwest Harbor and Tremont — the “quiet side”! You have chosen to visit one of the most naturally beautiful places in the country — Mount Desert Island. This PORT DIRECTORY is intended to enhance the time you spend in this area by providing easy access to information about places to stay, things to do and see, activities, and places to dine, among other things. In the back of the book, you will find an extensive index of merchants. Also useful are the marina rules, rates and telephone numbers, tide charts, ferry schedules, museum listings, church services, maps of Southwest Harbor (including Bass Harbor and Tremont), and a full map of Mount Desert Island in the center section. It is our hope that the Port Directory will serve as a helpful reference book for the visitor, tourist, summer and year–round resident. We want this publication to be useful, fresh, fun, and appealing. Keep it aboard your boat, in your home, by your phone, or in your car. For additional copies, please ask at a place of business, Chamber of Commerce office, or just contact us. As we are a member of the Maine Tourism Association, our books can also be found at most visitor centers throughout Maine. The Southwest Harbor Port Directory was initially started with the approval of Harbor Associate’s 164-slip marina at the head of the Harbor (now Dysart’s). It is hard to believe that close to thirty years have gone by! This is my 12th season as publisher of the Southwest Harbor & Tremont Port Directory. I love this area, and I love what I do. I hope you all can say the same! Our sincere wish is that you enjoy your time on Mount Desert Island, and thank you for reading the Southwest Harbor & Tremont Port Directory. Please let those advertisers you visit know that you learned about them in the Port Directory!

the Port directory featured hike To the Ocean and Back on the Wonderland Trail Beginning and ending at the/Wonderland parking area on Route 102A in Bass Harbor. GPS N44 23378W68 319944. Distance 1.4 miles This is our 11th season of presenting an outdoor activity in the Southwest Harbor & Tremont Port Directory. In the past we have featured hikes, bike rides, canoe and kayak trips. This year we offer a hike with a lot of reward for minimal effort.
The hike starts from the Wonderland parking area, which is on Route 102A, roughly 8 miles from the center of Southwest Harbor. The trail leaves the parking area on a flat gravel road through nice open woods. As you get closer to the shore the trees will thin out and you will notice some protective fences along the trail. These are placed there to keep people off areas that have been damaged.
Bear right on the path and proceed to the shore of the Atlantic Ocean. There’s not much here between you and Europe except a lot of water. To the right, you will see a point of land where the Ship Harbor Nature Trail is. Then scanning to the left, in the distance, you see Swans Island, Placenta Island, Great Gott Island, and way over to the left Great Cranberry Island.

This is a lovely shore. We encourage you to explore and relax and soak in this wonderful place. If you happen to be here on a nice day, you can enjoy the warmth on the rocks, the sparkling water, and the dreamy blue sky. But even on an overcast day, you can enjoy the surf and the shore. Be careful at the ocean’s edge, but just a few feet inland, there are tidal pools that are full of wonderful life. Check them out. Like much of Mount Desert Island, there is plenty of
The first thing to know about tidal pools is that pink granite in the area. So they occur at low tide. So planning this hike at beautiful! low tide is pretty important. You can find tide information for Mount Desert Island on page 24. The pools occur in the intertidal zone where the outgoing tide leaves behind water in low points in the rocks. Plants and animals live in this ever-changing environment. For example, you can find kelp and other seaweeds, crabs, urchins, starfish, anemones and barnacles in a tidal pool. During the summer months, Acadia National Park offers guided Ranger Programs on the tidal pools at Ship Harbor just down the shore. You can find more info on tide pools at https://www.nps.gov/acad/planyourvisit/tidepooling.htm where there

is a good tips and safety list. A good word of wisdom from the folks at The Park, “The longer you watch, the more you’ll see.” The Wonderland area is basically a diamond shaped point of land with two small coves on either side. The point of land has a wonderful stretch of rocky shore that wraps around from one side to another. Also, the proximity of this shore to the open ocean provides good surf especially as you go to the left or North towards Bennet Cove. The day we went was shortly after a late summer storm and there was some exceptional surf when we were at the head of the point of land. You really can spend a day here, exploring the shore including the tidal pools, relaxing on the warm rocks as the waves roll in, enjoying a nice picnic lunch as the seagulls greet you with a curious eye. On a warm day, when the tide is low, this is truly a land full of wonder.
When you want to head back and end your adventure, you can return from the trail you SW or Cycle 2014onred 4/24/14Cove 7:36 came in on the trail the Bennet side. When we were on our way to Bennet Cove, we passed by some beautiful beach roses, with the lovely cinnamon scent. Either way, these trails converge close by and return to the parking area. We hope you enjoy your excursion to Wonderland. flamingos? in southWest harbor, maine?? There is a rumor that flamingos flock to Southwest Harbor some time around mid-July each year! OK, so they are plastic flamingos ... and they are part of a fundraiser for the Harbor House ... but it IS quite a sight to behold. Every year, Harbor House holds the fun-filled Quietside Flamingo Festival, a great family festival that truly has something for every one. While it is whimsical, lighthearted and decidedly hot pink, the annual Harbor House Flamingo Festival is integral to the Harbor House mission of community building. Over the years, it has become a way for the community to come together to celebrate the treasured value

of small town life. Young, old and in-between, locals, summer people and tourists, all participate in the festivities; and our lawns, store windows and buildings proudly display the plastic pink creatures. It is a spectacular showcase for our Center and all that we offer our community. Be sure to watch for the parade, craft fair, Flamingo 4-Miler, and so much more! Enjoy! This year the Flamingo Festival will be held starting July 13 and running through the 16th. Be sure to “get your pink on” and join the fun!

The EXPLORER BUS system is a marvelous FREE service that covers all points of the Island’s compass — as well as a bus over in Winter Harbor to cover the Schoodic section of Acadia — with propane-powered, environmentally clean transportation to hiking trails, carriage roads, island beaches, and in town shopping. You can leave your car at home ... or at the Acadia Gateway Center in Trenton ... and visit all parts of Mount Desert Island bringing your bikes, well-mannered pets, groceries and shopping bags along with you. The buses provide stops all along the traveled ways and offer a relaxed and pleasant excursion. The Island Explorer can provide a truly car-free vacation experience on Maine’s most beautiful and popular island and you are protecting the air and nature of the Island for our future visitors and offspring. Check www.exploreacadia.com for maps and time tables. Facts you might like to know:
• If you are using the bus to access Acadia National Park, you must have a park pass.
• During peak days and hours, crowding can be an issue on the buses. If you have flexibility, choose off-peak hours (often early mornings/late afternoons). • Donations are encouraged.
Get the 511 Hop aboard a FREE Island Explorer bus for a day of on-island shopping and dining. Call 511 or 866-282-7578 It’s fast and informative! www.visitsouthwestharbor.com

If you would like another easy hike/walk in addition to the Wonderland Trail featured on page 12, drive just a little further down Seawall Road if you’re coming from Manset/Southwest Harbor to the Ship Harbor Nature Trail. It is a little longer than the Wonderland Trail and is still perfect for families of all ages. The story goes that smugglers would slip into the protected cove at high water and tie trees to their topmasts to hide from the English revenuers! You will find open paths, walk through the woods, and come out on the rocky shore. Have fun exploring! AND, if you REALLY want to make a day of it, be sure to head over to the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse! All three of these are part of the National Park Service, so be sure to have your National Park Pass. www.visitsouthwestharbor.com

local hands reaching out This year our focus for “Local Hands Reaching Out” is on an organization that works with our local children - the future of our world! All photos in this article are used by permission of Island Readers andWriters.
Island Readers & Writers (IRW) recently celebrated a decade of bringing innovative, bookcentered programs to school children living on Mount Desert Island, the outer islands and inland communities of Washington County. Now based in Southwest Harbor, the organization got its start at the former Port in a Storm Bookstore in Somesville and is now going on eleven years as a thriving nonprofit. Its core mission is to inspire a passion for reading and learning among children living on Maine’s outer islands and inland islands of Washington County. IRW’s signature program is the Island Book and Author Program, in which children’s book authors and illustrators visit schools, give group presentations and focused writing and/ or illustration workshops across all grade levels. After every visit, each child receives a personally-inscribed book by the author or illustrator. To date, the organization has Seventh and eighth grade students given over 15,000 books to Maine children from MDI schools attended a special after-school program with author Maria who were participants in hundreds of Padian at MDI High School, where they innovative programs. discussed her young adult novel, Out

Pastel de tres leches — 3 milk cake In a medium bowl, mix together: 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour 1 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt Put 6 whole eggs room temp. plus 1 cup sugar in electric mixer; mix on high for 5 minutes or until egg mixture triples in size. Reduce egg mixture to slowest speed, sprinkle the flour mixture into eggs; gradually combine, then add (same slow speed) 1/4 cup water, flavored with 1 tsp. vanilla. Pour cake batter into a greased and floured 9 inch spring form pan; bake at 325 ˚ for 30-40 minutes. MAYONNAISE: 1 cup mayonnaise 1/4 cup mascarpone cheese, at room temp. 1/3 cup fresh basil leaf, finely chopped 1 Tbsp. curry powder 1 tsp. smoked paprika kosher salt & freshly ground black pepper Place oven rack in center of oven and preheat oven to 400Ëš; spray heavy rimmed baking sheet with cooking spray and set aside. Using a mortar and pestle, or spice grinder, grind the cumin and coriander fine (this can also be done using a plastic bag and a rolling pin or the bottom of a pan). In a medium skillet, over medium heat, toast the spices until aromatic; place in a small bowl. Chop the garlic and sprinkle with 1/4 tsp. salt; using the side of your knife, scrape the garlic and salt to form a paste, then add to the spices. Also add the remaining 2 tsp. of salt, pepper, and oil; stir until mixture is smooth. Place roast on the prepared baking sheet and rub all over with the spice mixture. maine rueBen Pizza This recipe uses a lot of Maine ingredients!
Dough: Portland Pie Pizza Dough – beer, basil wheat or garlic; thawed. I prefer beer flavored but they all work well. Toppings: W. A Bean & Sons Garlic Chicken Sausage – the sausage can be put on from the package or browned a little with onions with a little olive oil. Olive oil from Fiore (optional) - the sausage is fairly low fat, so you may want to include some oil since this pizza has no sauce. Chevre goat cheese from Seal Cove Farm or if you prefer a hard cheese, Frost Heave from Fuzzy Udder Creamery. As much cheese as you want. Budget and daring should be the only limit to cheese. Sauerkraut from Morse’s Sauerkraut in Waldoboro Spread a thin layer of corn meal on your working surface and roll out the dough with a rolling pin. Roll dough to approximate size of your pizza tray or stone. I use a 10” x 14” steel cookie sheet with low sides. Place dough on pan (or slide pan under dough) and adjust dough to fit pan. Hopefully the dough overhangs the pan enough to roll some fancy cheese into a stuffed crust. Wouldn’t that be good?! Put the ingredient with the most water – the sauerkraut - on last. The olive oil (if using) and sausage go on first. Spread sausage evenly unless you want a meat-free section. Dot the sausaged-pizza evenly with cheese. And now for the sauerkraut. Eat some from the container because you know… you deserve it. Spread the rest around – but not too much since it can make a watery pizza. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 450˚ for 10 – 15 minutes until dough and cheese are nicely browned. If not browned enough, cook longer in 2 minute increments. If you are using a pizza stone, pre-heating could take up to an hour. Let cool for five minutes. Eat. Steven Valleau, Artist, Wendell Gilley Museum
