Publisher’s Welcome Welcome to Northeast Harbor! You have chosen to visit one of the most naturally beautiful places in the country — Mount Desert Island. This PORT DIRECTORY is intended to enhance the time you spend in this area by providing easy access to information about places to stay, things to do and see, activities, and places to dine, among other things. In the back of the book, you will find an extensive index of merchants. Also useful are the marina rules, rates and telephone numbers, tide charts, museum listings, church services, maps of Northeast Harbor, Cranberry Islands, Bar Harbor and Southwest Harbor as well as a full map of Mount Desert Island in the center section. It is our hope that the Port Directory will serve as a helpful reference book for visitors and residents alike. We want this publication to be useful, fresh, fun, and appealing. Keep it aboard your boat, in your home, by your phone, or in your car. For additional copies, please ask at a place of business, Chamber of Commerce office, or just contact us. As we are a member of the Maine Tourism Association, our books can also be found at most visitor centers throughout the state. Wine is Made in Maine? This article was written by Dawn Lamendola, owner of House Wine in Bar Harbor. Dawn attended College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor with a focus on sustainable agriculture and ended up at the University of Iowa studying Political Science. Most of her years after college were spent in the wine industry working as a sommelier in New York and Boston as well as at the Windows on the World Wine School in NYC. In 2009 Dawn returned to Bar Harbor to open House Wine. Dawn lives in Bar Harbor with her husband Josh who teaches photography at COA, son Griffin, an imaginative third grader at Conners Emerson School, and their crazy silver lab.

While Maine may not seem like the most likely region for wine production with our cold winters and short growing season, there are some 25+ wineries making wine in the state. Maine wines have been made from honey, European “Vitis vinifera” grapes, American “Vitis labrusca” grapes, cold resistant hybrid grapes and myriad other fruits and combinations of all of the above. Apples, pears, blueberries, cranberries, strawberries, peaches, blackberries, elderflower and rhubarb have all been turned into Maine wine. In addition, some wineries bring Complete Wash-Dry-Fold Services with delivery (drop off and pick up) in grapes or pressed juice from Residential and commercial other wine producing regions Ironing Services and make the wines in their own clothing and flat works ironing Maine wineries. must all be quite sweet. However, these fruit wines can be anywhere from very dry to dessert wine sweet, semi-dry, sparkling and everything in between. I have tasted blueberry wines that could be mistaken for merlot and pear wines that are a dead ringer for a deliciously crisp sauvignon blanc. At House Wine shop in Bar Harbor, we field the most questions about blueberry wines. It is said that it takes about 5 gallons of wild Maine blueberries to make a single bottle of wine. Wild Maine blueberries are low bush blueberries that grow throughout the state and most prolifically in the Downeast region – with Cherryfield, Maine recognized as the Wild Blueberry Capital of the World. Due to the amount of skin to juice ratio, these tiny berries are capable of producing dark wines with deep tannic structure. When fermentation is stopped early on, a sweeter wine is produced. Maine growers know that the key to quality wine making is experimenting to find which grapes (if any) do best in their area. In some parts of the state, wineries are experimenting with growing some European varietals (“Vitis vinivera”), finding the interior region better for ripening these grapes than the foggy coastal areas. However, the Maine soil and climate are not very conducive to growing and fully ripening these kinds of grapes. Many wineries are having success growing and producing wines from cold weather hardy hybrid grape varietals such as Marquette, Frontenac, La Crosse www.visitnortheastharbor.com

and Leon Mallot. These hybrids are said to combine the flavor profiles of the “Vitis vinifera” wine grapes with the hardiness of often sweeter American “Vitis labrusca” varietals. While they have their own distinctive flavors, they are typically found to produce wines with lively acidity, making them great food pairing wines. Many Maine wineries have tasting rooms open to the public for wine tastings and tours. While you’re here, consider The tasting Room at Bar Harbor Cellars. a visit to Bar Harbor Cellars, Mount Desert Island’s only winery. Local Hands Reaching Out This is the thirteenth year that the Port Directories have put a spotlight on a local organization that “reaches out” - be it reaching around the world or around the corner. Last year we focused on an organization that works with our local children - this year to the opposite end (for the most part) of the age spectrum! All photos in this article are used by permission of Island Connections.

Island Connections began in 1997 as the result of an informal needs assessment performed by The Mount Desert Island Senior Task Force which consisted of multiple agencies and organizations interested in addressing the unmet needs of the underserved and senior populations. A $25,000 Faith in Action seed grant was awarded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to establish the Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers project for seniors and people with disabilities (be it temporary or permanent), on Mount Desert Island. Volunteers were recruited from area faith congregations to provide basic needs such as transportation, grocery shopping and other services.

We are coming up on 22 years of service in the community and transportation remains our top priority. The people we serve we consider our neighbors. We offer free transportation service to those needing transportation to scheduled medical appointments including: Regular volunteers deliver chemotherapy, radiation treatments, Meals on Wheels. dialysis treatments, out-patient surgery, mental and physical therapy, dental, and eye appointments, as well as rides for grocery shopping, banking visits, exercise classes and other various trips. Our transportation service area includes all of MDI, Ellsworth, and as far as Blue Hill, Brewer and Bangor. Additionally, we work with the Mount Desert Island/Ellsworth Housing Authority to deliver meals to island neighbors in need. Island Connections is considered to be the â&#x20AC;&#x153;wheelsâ&#x20AC;? for the Meals on Wheels program on Mount Desert Island. Island Connections also owns and operates a wheelchair accessible van for those neighbors with mobility issues. All rides are provided with door to door service by our volunteers using their own resources such as vehicle, fuel and time. While we can have as many as 100 registered volunteers, we typically have between 50-75 active drivers at any given time. Between transport of our neighbors to their needed appointments and meal deliveries, we provide between 250 to more than 400 rides per month. In 2017, our yearly ride total was 3,654 rides, including meal deliveries of

up to 13,000 meals. In 2018, we saw a substantial increase in the number of neighbors we support and the ride total rose to 4,628 including meal deliveries above 14,000 meals. This significant increase resulted in a 28.5% increase in services delivered in one year. We expect that increase to be the “norm” going forward. As we look to the future, we are very excited about recently acquiring a sevenpassenger van through the generous donation from the Cough Family which will be used for a new program to transport several neighbors at a time to the grocery store on a weekly basis. We are working through other program ideas for the van that will include weekly drives to Walmart and various local social events to include Trish Nolan from The Bayview and Open Table MDI, a weekly community Doreen Willett, Executive Director meal in Bar Harbor; in the winter months with the newly donated van. from November to April to the MDI Coffee House, a collaboration between Island Connections and the YWCA MDI; and the Senior Movie Matinee at Reel Pizza in Bar Harbor which has been a long time collaboration for Island Connections providing a weekly discounted movie to older adults. We are very excited to see where this takes us and our neighbors! While we recognize the speed at which older people are requiring more services, it is always critical for us to maintain and recruit volunteers who are passionate about our mission. In 2018, a new recruitment program was developed, fittingly named Joy Riding Sustainable with Island Connections. The joy is found during a ride when connections are made between our volunteers and PROVISIONS neighbors. Many of the neighbors we serve are living independently in their own homes without family or friends living nearby. You can certainly say that the rides are a means to give the neighbor the opportunity to not only get transportation to their appointments but to allow precious time for engagement with another member of their community. This is a vital consequence of our transportation service that can help alleviate isolation. Our Annual Popover Event (held in May) at the Jordan Pond House, is hosted by our friends at Dawnland. This event has been running for many years. We invite about 100 neighbors from MDI and the surrounding islands as well as volunteers to have those delectable delights (the famous popovers) along with tea in beautiful Acadia National Park. The morning seating consists mainly of our neighbors who look forward to this event all year long and the afternoon seating is for our volunteers. At the volunteer seating we announce and award our Volunteer of the Year the David P. Evans Memorial Award for their outstanding Third Annual Driving for dedication and service on behalf of our neighbors. Rides Golf Tournament at Kebo Valley Golf Club. Our other annual events include our Chowder Chowdown for Rides, Driving for Rides Golf Tournament, Dine-Around Day, Running for Rides Mary Parker Memorial 5K Race and Holiday Raffle. Island Connections is a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization and exists through the generosity of individual donors, business partners, annual fundraising events, town appropriations and foundation grants. All proceeds are used for the sole purpose of facilitating the services that our dedicated volunteers provide. Our goal is to provide this service for generations to come. 1 can Campbell’s condensed Cream of Mushroom soup 1 tbsp each unsalted butter and olive oil 1 onion, sliced thin 1-1 1/2 cups of fresh mushrooms, sliced 1/4 cup cooking sherry

Sear the pot roast over MEDIUM heat in a good-sized frying pan--start with the fattiest side down and brown all surfaces. While searing, add 2-3 shakes of onion powder, garlic powder, thyme and black pepper. When all surfaces are browned, remove roast with tongs and place in bottom of slow cooker; pour Cream of Mushroom soup over it.. Keep frying pan hot; add unsalted butter and olive oil, melt. Add sliced onion and mushroom to frying pan and saute quickly, distributing all throughout the pan. When mushrooms are browned (about 2 minutes), add about 1/4 cup of cooking sherry. Keep sauteing and scrape with spoon or spatula to deglaze the browned bits from the pan into the liquid. When pan surface is cleared (about 1 minute), pour the mixture from the frying pan over the soup and meat in the slow cooker. No need to stir. Cook on LOW setting for 8-10 hours. Heat the oil over medium heat in a large, lidded skillet or casserole, and add the onion. Cook, stirring, until just about tender, about three minutes. Add 2 Tbsp. of the balsamic and cook, stirring, until mixture is golden, about three minutes, then add the apples and stir for two to three minutes.

1 cup Greek yogurt (I prefer Cabot) 10-12 oz. fresh broccoli, cut in small pieces 8 oz. shredded cheese 1/2 tsp. pepper optional: sliced grape tomatoes; smoked paprika Cook the broccoli for about 2 minutes in a microwave safe container. Whisk the yogurt and just a bit of the egg substitute until it is nice and smooth. Then add the remaining egg. Add in the cheese, broccoli and pepper.Spray 9x13 pan with oil (preferably a non-aerosol spray). Pour the ingredients into the pan. Add tomatoes and smoked paprika on the top, if using. old-FaShioned Baked BeanS 6 cups dried beans 2/4 to 1 lb lean salt port or slab bacon on the rind 1 tablespoon dry mustard 1 teaspoon cracked black pepper 1/3 cup Maine maple syrup 1 medium-sized onion, peeled and stuck with 2 whole cloves Cover beans with boiling water, soak 1 hour, then drain. (This will remove some gas-causing compounds.) Cover beans with cold water, bring to a slow boil and cook until skins split when the beans are blown on. Drain, saving liquid. Drop the meat into a pan of boiling water, turn off heat and let sit for 5 or 10 minutes to remove excess salt. Drain and cut in half. Put half of the meat, rind down, on the bottom of your bean pot. Combine 1 cup bean liquid with the mustard, syrup, and pepper, then mix it into the parboiled beans. Microwave milk & chips and a dash of salt for 1 minute on high in medium glass bowl. Let stand 1 minute then stir to thoroughly combine. Heat another 30 seconds. Our go-to summer food, holds up great in the refrigerator. It’s good cold, room temperature, or warm. We eat it as a side, over salad greens, or as a dip with tortilla chips. Great topped with feta cheese.

It’s delicious warm under ice cream or whip cream and it’s also great cold! It doesn’t need frosting because it’s satisfying as is. I used to love to whip this up in the afternoon so that when my kiddo’s got off the school bus they could have some warm and yummy snack cake!

(All amounts are appropriate) 1 large can chickpeas, rinsed 1 large can black beans, rinsed 1/2 cup red onion, finely chopped 1-1/2 fresh jalapeños, finely chopped 1/2 cup sun-dried tomatoes (oil-packed), finely chopped 1/3 cup flatleaf parsely, finely chopped 1/3 cup mint, finely chopped 1/3 cup basil, finely chopped Vinaigrette: 1/4 cup lemon juice 2/3 cup olive oil 1/2 cup cider vinegar 4 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. black pepper 1/4 tsp. cayenne Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Stir hard one to two minutes then put into dish to cool. Sauce: Boil 2 cups milk. Beat yolks of 3 eggs with 1 cup sugar and a piece of butter the size of a walnut. Cook two minutes. This is a repeat of one of our favorite hikes that we presented six years ago! We have now presented an outdoor activity in the Northeast Harbor Port Directory for TWELVE YEARS! In the past we have featured hikes and bike rides. Usually we try to “create” an excursion by combining a unique combination of trails, carriage paths and natural features that might (hopefully) be different from already published material. This is a well known, often traveled hike. We’ve made this departure because Norumbega MounMoun tain is an icon of Mount Desert. Forming the eastern wall of Somes Sound, this mountain with a long North-South ridge is precipitous on its East-West sides. This is a typical Mount Desert Island mountain; long and gradual North and South, short and steep East and West. Our hike will take on the steep east face of Norumbega Mountain. Then we will more casually descend the long south ridge to the shore of Lower Hadlock Pond. Next we will skirt the beautiful shoreline of the Pond, culminating at the small cascades at Hadlock Brook. Finally, we will walk through the woods back to your car. To get to the Norumbega Parking Lot travel 1.4 miles from Northeast Harbor on Route 198, just past Upper Hadlock Pond. The parking lot is on the left. The parking lot is “one way” meaning that from

Northeast Harbor, you will pass the lower entrance and enter the upper, parking on the right. From Somesville, take Route 198 from the traffic signal where it departs from Route 102. In about 4 miles, the parking lot will be on your right. Use the upper entrance. The trail begins at the upper end of the parking lot. You will immediately encounter a trail junction. To the left, the Goat Trail leaves for Lower Hadlock Pond. We will return via this route. Currently we will take the Goat Trail straight ahead. The trail immediately climbs moderately over a rough trail that includes many roots and boulders. The trail is marked by blue paint blazes and rock cairns above. This appears to be a minor stream bed as we had hiked one day after a spring rain and there were many trickles and puddles. I had to watch my step but it was not troublesome. The first .3 miles gains 600 feet and is the only difficult part of the hike as you switch back and forth up the steep mountainside. Further on the trail opens up over ledges and the view opens up behind you to Parkman, Sargent and Penobscot Mountains. The next .3 miles to the summit of View to Sargent Mountain Norumbega is easier as the trail is less steep and smoother. The views open up even more to the North and East. The trail turns South at the top of the ridge and climbs gently among scrub pine to the summit. At this point, you will continue south, but the trail changes to The Norumbega Mountain Trail. The next .7 miles is a wonderful descent along an open ridge with views of the ocean ahead and blueberries lining the path in late summer. It is easy to lose the path here. With the compelling views of the mountains to the left, you can forget to follow the paint blazes and rock cairns. The seemingly open path continues along on ledges but inevitably ends abruptly. Keep to the top of the ridge and follow the trail markings carefully. As you descend Norumbega to the south, you will enter lower, covered areas, and then out onto open ledges with many views of Southwest Harbor and the islands south of Mount Desert Occasionally we DO get rainy days! Island. Northeast Harbor always seems to be just below plain sight. You get glimpses of the harbor but this is not the place to view the village of Northeast Harbor. Try Asticou Terraces for that.

Northeast Harbor through the trees

Finally you descend off the ledges and into the beautiful spruce forest. For the next half mile, you gently descend through the woods to the shore of Lower Hadlock Pond. Shortly after leaving the ledges, you will see Golf Course Trail leaving from the left. This leads to the edges of the beautiful Northeast Harbor Golf Club. This also is a link to the myriad of trails south of Lower Hadlock Pond, leading over Schoolhouse Ledge and into Northeast Harbor proper. We will continue straight on the Norumbega Mountain Trail, leaving Schoolhouse Ledge for another edition. As you continue to descend, you will begin to see the blue water of Lower Hadlock shining through the trees below. As you reach the shore of the pond, you will see a small dam on the right. You will turn left onto the Hadlock Ponds Trail. The dam and adjacent building are part of the public water system for Northeast Harbor. This area is a public reservoir. Swimming and pets are not allowed. People a couple of miles away are drinking this water so please stay on the trail. The next half mile is a lovely trail along the western shore of Lower Hadlock Pond. As you progress northeast there are striking views of Live

Parkman Mountain and surrounding peaks. The northern end of the pond narrows and soon you approach where Hadlock Brook cascades into the pond. This is a sweet spot and a nice place for a picnic.

Bridge to Lower Hadlock Trail

We’d like to say that the trail continues over the ancient looking bridge made out of slender, mossy wood. This is the Lower Hadlock Trail which leads to Route 198 and would mean walking a mile or so along the road and its 50 mph speed limit.

Instead we will bear left, and continue on the Hadlock Ponds Trail and follow the course of Hadlock Brook. Soon after, the Hadlock Ponds Trail turns right. You will bear left on the Goat Trail. This is apparently the beginning of the trail that we used to climb Norumbega Mountain. Goat Trail is an older name for the Norumbega Mountain Trail. Acadia National Park began renaming trails back to their original, historic ones. This leads us to wonder, “Did people actually lead their goats up here, to the summit of Norumbega Mountain?” Goats are rather nimble and maybe they like blueberries. The next 1.3 miles is a better alternative to the highway as it travels through the woods and generally ascends back to the parking lot. This is not an inspired section, but it gets you back to your car without walking along the road. When you reach the Goat Trail turning left up the mountain, turn right and back to your car. We’d like to take a moment to explain the name Norumbega. Apparently, when French explorers led by Samuel de Champlain, “discovered” Mount Desert Island in the early 1600’s, he learned from the Penobscot locals there was a mythical, high walled, gold city somewhere up the Penobscot River named Norumbega. This was apparently the result of the “locals” liking the French and wanting to please them and enjoying telling tall tales. What this all boiled down to was that the explorers gave up on Norumbega and settled for l’Isle des Monts Deserts, the Isle of Bare Mountains. For us 21st century folks, the Isle of Mount Desert is a wonderful place.

Going Green on MDI The natural, rugged beauty of Mount Desert Island was millennia in the making, and thanks to the foresight of a small group of summer visitors is still largely preserved to this day for visitors and residents alike to enjoy. Acadia National Park protects much of MDI, but our towns, villages and businesses have also started to take important steps to reduce pollution on both land and sea. Visitors will find for the first time this year that towns on the Island have enacted single-use plastic bag and polystyrene foam take-out container bans. Most of the credit for this accomplishment goes to the courage and determination of 4 girls in Southwest Harbor who learned about plastic pollution in middle school and became determined to do something about it. In addition, many of our restaurants and caterers have taken the “Sustainable MDI Pledge” and worked hard to reduce plastic waste, recycle, compost, source food sustainably, conserve energy, and, if possible, switch to renewable energy. This summer the pledge is expanding to hotels, inns and bed and breakfasts. You can support this effort by supporting businesses with Sustainable MDI decals on doors and windows and encouraging other businesses to take the pledge. than the older, less efficient models. Although it can’t be seen by the casual passerby, there is a full solar array now on the Town’s Highway Department building, helping to cut electric usage. An electric vehicle charging station serves 2 EV-only parking spaces at the Yachtsmen’s Building in the Northeast Harbor Marina, and water bottle filling stations are available at the Marina’s Visitor Center as well as Clifton Dock. Many of these initiatives are the work of the Town’s Sustainability Committee, a small group of volunteers who work year-round to provide guidance to the Town’s Selectmen and officials on how to lower our overall impact on the environment, reduce energy use, and lower costs. So, as a visitor, how can you do your part to maintain the beauty of MDI? Probably many of the same things you do in your own hometown: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – and when in Acadia, respect the “Leave No Trace” National Park mission. But there are additional ways to help: • Use reusable bags: bring your own reusable bags when you shop, or purchase them from our local merchants. If you visit by water, your canvas boat bags are ideal, • Use the Island Explorer: park your car and ride the free bus system on MDI – get your eyes on the scenery as opposed to the road, • Carry a reusable water bottle: take advantage of water filling stations – and say no to plastic straws at your favorite watering hole (although you will hardly find any plastic straws given out on MDI!). MDI businesses are happy to fill your reusable mug, and most can fill your water bottle too. • Return your bottles & cans: Maine has had a “bottle bill” for years, by which you pay a deposit for every beverage bottle and can that you purchase in the state, including wine and alcohol bottles. You can redeem them when empty and they are recycled instead of just thrown away. Many of our communities have collection bins, and often use the proceeds from redeemed bottles to help pay for local projects such as school trips. • Remember that you can recycle clean # 1 and #2 plastics: put them in a separate container from the rest of your trash. June 8: Cars & Coffee: Steamers The Cars & Coffees are an opportunity for drivers to show off their own special cars, and for all auto enthusiasts to congregate to kick tires, peer under hoods, and enjoy coffee with their fellow car-lovers. All are welcome, with or without their own antique or vintage automobile. 9am-12pm. June through October: Friday Ride Day. This season, every Friday we will be offering rides in one of our antique automobiles (weather permitting)! 10am-4pm. July 6: Cars & Coffee: Swedish Car Meet See event on June 8. All are welcome, with or without their own antique or vintage auto. 9am-12pm. July 28: Murder Mystery Dinner: Enjoy dinner among a collection of elegant antique cars. Harold Haertel was a carver from Dundee, Illinois who was born the same year as Wendell Gilley. Harold and Wendell worked in the same world of bird carving but despite many similarities in their background and work, their carvings are very different. In 2019, we will tell a story in our museum about bird carving that explores the lives and work of these two extremely talented carvers. Museum member, and carver, Paul Haertel will curate this exhibition with the help of museum carver Steven Valleau. This exhibition is possible thanks to the generosity of Tom Haertel - Haroldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s son, and a carver himself. June 28 - Oct. 16: Summer Exhibition Opening Beginning of Treasure of the Farnsworth Show. The Gilley and the Farnsworth join forces in order to bring you a unique collection of Maine Masterworks, especially curated for the Gilley, including a range of important painters such as Fitz Henry Lane, George Bellows, Marsden Hartley, Neil Welliver, Emily Muir, Jaime Wyeth, and many more. The exhibition will also feature outstanding modern bird scupltures by Maine artists Edwin Gamble and Bernard Langlais and by Louise Nevelson.
