WHEREVER THE FERRY GOES, TRADITION FOLLOWS Flanked by deep red banks, the Northumberland Strait offers the warmest Atlantic waters north of Virginia and even warmer hospitality. Cradled by all three Maritime provinces, you’ll be hard pressed to find communities more welcoming and more authentically down-home than the Northumberland Shore region. And there’s no better way to get acquainted with this beautiful slice of coast than with Northumberland Ferries Limited.

WHY NORTHUMBERLAND? Being wedged between two of Canada’s most popular summer destinations isn’t a bad place to be! Set in the perfect storm of tidal patterns, the Strait’s bath-temperature waters and sandstone shores make for some of the best beaches around. Take in stunning views of the place the French once called “la mer rouge” and absorb a millennia’s old history etched into each craggy inch of our shorelines. There are endless ways to soak up the epic beauty of this region—both over the Strait and

on either side—with opportunities for outdoor adventure at each turn. And when it comes to experiencing the Maritimes and its melting pot of traditions, there’s no better place than here to fully immerse yourself. A landing place for settlers of all stripes, expect good old fashioned Scottish cèilidhs, rousing Acadian kitchen parties, and more regional dialects and customs than you can count. Summers here are a heady mix of busy festivals, lobster dinners, dockside drinks, and hazy beach days. Each pocket and community offers its own treasure trove of events, including the annual grape stomp at Jost Vineyards, the crowd pleasing New Glasgow Jubilee, and the toe-tapping Festival of Small Halls across rural PEI. No matter what week—or shore—you visit, you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to entertainment.

MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR VACATION To really get to the heart of the Maritime experience, you just need to look at the traditions that connect us. An annual trip along the red banks of the Northumberland. A frosty

scoop of Cow’s Ice Cream on a hot summer day. A family trip where no one asks “are we there yet?” A blissful 75-minute ferry voyage from shore to shore where you can watch your vacation unfold before your eyes. More than just a boat, the ferry is the perfect vehicle for traditions old and new. New traditions, like catching a live musical performance, right onboard with our Music on Deck series. Or, beginning a ritual of indulging in the food, wine, and beer samplings the region has to offer while en route with our fantastic Seaside Experiences And old traditions, like a getaway to Pictou Lodge with friends and family for a blissful week of bonfires, beach days, and renowned Taste of Nova Scotia seafood dining—all just minutes from the ferry port and more adventure on the other side of your journey. Once in a lifetime vacations can be overrated. With Northumberland Ferries Limited enjoy a familiar tradition so great you’ll want to return again and again, year after year. So book your summer ferry crossing and experience adventures old and new, from shore to shore.

TWO PROVINCES SEPARATED BY THE SEA. UNITED BY TRADITION. Summer getaways to Pictou Lodge. Sunny afternoons on Cavendish Beach. Wherever we go, tradition follows. Spend more time building memories to last with ferry service from Nova Scotia to Prince Edward Island. Immerse yourself in Maritime tradition with our Music on Deck series, fantastic Seaside Experiences*, and more as you set sail for a summer you’ll never forget. *Available on select summer sailings. welcome

Welcome to the Pictou Lodge Beach Resort. I hope you are nicely settled into your accommodations at this point and enjoying your stay so far. We are pleased you chose to stay here with us. We are happy and thankful to have you as our guest. We have put together this welcome magazine to help you get the most out of your stay here at the Lodge and in Pictou County. There is much to see and do both on resort and in our immediate area. Please take the time to look through our guide and see what we have to offer. For more detailed information on in-room amenities and information please also refer to the in-room directory. Many of the companies and products featured here are available in our retail shop, on our menus, or in our lounge. As General Manager for the Pictou Lodge, I have the great pleasure of spending time in our beautiful and authentic log lodge sitting on this great point with a panoramic view of the Northumberland Strait. The Northumberland Strait is known for its warm swimmable waters, beautiful sandy beaches, and delicious seafood. Throughout Nova Scotia, the Northumberland Shore is known as Cottage Country. There are numerous cottages up and down our shore for good reason. The Strait is well protected with many harbours. Most days we have calm lapping seas, which we all find is quite restful and good for the soul. From late May to early July our Strait is alive with lobster fishing boats pulling the delicacies from the ocean floor. At other times of the year, herring, mackerel, scallops, and even tuna are fished from the waters here. If you take a short drive up the road you will find the fisherman’s wharf, right next door to the Prince

Edward Island ferry terminal. Of course many of our guests are traveling to or from our neighbouring province of Prince Edward Island. And then there are our beautiful sandy beaches. From our private beach here at the resort, you can walk for several kilometres. Just up the beach from our resort you will find Caribou-Munroes Island Provincial Park; perfect for a morning or after-dinner stroll. There are several wonderful beaches within a short commute of our resort. Of course Melmerby Beach (known as The Merb to locals) is also a favourite for the local residents. I encourage you to rise early and catch a sunrise. We have your front row seats ready. Look out to our bluff just beyond our main parking lot. The sunrises over the ocean can be quite spectacular. In the evening, enjoy a drink on our patio and take in the sunset as well. Many of our guests are curious to know about the local population. The land was long inhabited by the indigenous people known as the Mi’kmaq. In the 1770s a ship from Scotland named the Hector brought the first settlement of Scottish people into what became known as New Scotland (Nova Scotia). Over the years the locals worked away at many different industries, including shipbuilding, fisheries, and tourism. More recently (mid 1900s) other industries have built here, including Michelin and the Sobeys shopping chain whose head office is located here in Pictou County. For a more thorough history of the Lodge itself please refer to that section included in this magazine. The Pictou Lodge currently employs about 100 staff, most working on a

seasonal basis as the Lodge is open full time from mid May until mid October. Through November and December we host various groups, weddings, and Christmas parties but are not open full time to general public. The winters can be quite harsh here and therefore our Lodge is closed from January through April. Again, we are thankful that you chose to stay with us. I hope you have the time to look through this publication and get the most out of your visit to the Pictou Lodge and the surrounding areas. For further information about any of the above or anything in this magazine, please do not hesitate to contact one of our guest service representatives. We do hope you enjoy your stay here with us.

When planning a visit to the north shore, Caldera Distilling is the perfect finish, encapsulating a truly special Nova Scotia moment. With such a rich history and story surrounding their region, Caldera always looks forward to having guests visit the farm for tours, tastings and special events; a short 25-minute drive from Pictou Lodge. It’s a wonderful opportunity to experience how this beverage is crafted and what makes it so very special. River John has a remarkable history. Founded by explorers and settled by shipbuilders and farmers, this little port gained worldwide attention for the craftsmanship of its clipper ships and its flourishing agricultural export market. There’s something to be said for the products crafted on the North Shore – a slower

pace, with a focused attention to detail that makes products here so very special. When Jarret and Tracy Stuart decided to move “back home,” with their young family, they knew they wanted to put that same care into their new products at Caldera Distilling. To the Stuarts, it’s all about those special moments bringing friends and family together – a sense of the sea and shore that speaks to the spirit of their community. This started a journey with purpose – to craft a whisky that resonates with Nova Scotia moments, all from their farm in the historical shipbuilding community of River John, Nova Scotia. Named after one of the largest ships ever built in River John, the beautiful Caldera represented the pinnacle of what was possible in this

tiny town of skilled shipbuilders. The Caldera represents the best in craftsmanship – designed to trade with the entire world. Caldera grow their own traditional grains that thrive in this specific part of the world, giving the ability to impart the soil characteristics into their ingredients, creating for you an authentic local flavour. Caldera can be enjoyed in three varieties: Hurricane 5 Blended Whisky, or one of their special releases like the Alhambra which captures the Spanish sunset in a bottle or the Champlain; a chance to look east and toast one of this countries great founders Samuel de Champlain.

A made in Nova Scotia moment

PRONOUNCED FLAVOUR, UNIQUELY NOVA SCOTIAN A creation steeped in tradition, seasoned with our salt air. The ocean defines our culture and our whisky, crafted with that same passion. Caldera is more than a beverage, it’s a spirit... connected to the heart of the North Shore. We’d love for you to explore River John, Nova Scotia. Let us welcome you to our fields, farm and friendship. 65 River John Rd., River John, Nova Scotia 1-844-494-4759 caldera.ca Please always drink responsibly.

meet the chef

Thank you for choosing to stay at Pictou Lodge Beach Resort. Let me officially welcome you to join us for breakfast, lunch, dinner and or a snack in the lounge! My name is Chef Kevin Harris and I have been the Chef here at the Pictou Lodge for a collective decade. I am actually a native Californian. I was exposed to a wide variety of cuisines and regional specialties growing up in California, New York City, outport Newfoundland, and rural New Brunswick. Following my culinary training in Prince Edward Island, I have had the great pleasure of working in restaurants in Vancouver and Halifax, as well as running resort kitchens in Nova Scotia – including seven seasons at Pictou Lodge – and most recently in Prince Edward Island. I was very pleased with the opportunity to return to Pictou Lodge this spring. As a result of my peripatetic life, I am familiar – and comfortable – with a wide

variety of cuisines. My personal style is somewhat eclectic, but with a preference towards the use of foods and methods representative of the region, prepared and presented as simply as possible. I always prefer the food to be the star of the show, and am never happier than when you, our guests, enjoy your meals. Let me share my favourite picks from our current menus to whet your appetite. For breakfast consider the cornmeal griddlecakes with honey and the banana bread French toast. Of course, the Chef’s breakfast is a dish that brings me back to my own youth. An orange sticky bun with a bit of fruit and a hot coffee. Nothing better! At lunch I think you should try the grilled ham and cheese sandwich and of course our Northumberland lobster roll. Fresh lobster from the Northumberland Strait, you need to try this.

Pictou County’s Weekly Newspaper Since 1893

For dinner I would suggest you start with the lobster stuffed mushroom caps and follow it with either the cedar planked salmon or the bacon-wrapped halibut filet. Just have time for a quick bite in the lounge? Try the charred Shishito peppers or the haddock tacos! Some of my favourite ingredients in these dishes highlight the partnerships we have developed with local fishers and farmers. There are great local products coming out of Sunny Cove Honey, Dalhousie Mountain Maple Syrup, Lakenman’s Farm, Bramble Hill Farm, That Dutchman’s Cheese, Sweet William’s Sausage and North Nova Seafoods to name a few. Some of these items you will find in our retails shop as well. I hope you enjoy your stay with us, and I do hope you have the opportunity to dine with us. Bon appetit! Executive Chef Kevin Harris

LOCAL, FRESH & FLOURISHING The New Glasgow Farmers’ Market is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to local farmers, artisans and our community. We are located along the beautiful riverfront in the heart of downtown New Glasgow. Come listen to local live music, eat great food, and meet friends and neighbours. It’s a must-see destination for visitors who want to experience Nova Scotia hospitality! This is a very special year for us as we celebrate our 10th anniversary! Our first Market began with just a handful of vendors and now we boast more than 70 vendors. Through a combined effort and support of our partners, we were able to open a heated building allowing us to operate year-round and give local entrepreneurs a low-cost, low-risk place for them to start and grow their business. This year we will hold a special Market to celebrate our 10th Anniversary to be held on Thursday, July 12 from 5pm until 9pm. We will have live local music featuring Pat Spaulding, the Kitchen Criminals and Amelia Parker. There will be children’s activities and cake! As a certified Nova Scotia Farmers’ Market, we have made a commitment to sell only the freshest, highest quality products; bringing you the very best of our community. Every Saturday morning, yearround, our vendors offer home-grown, local produce, naturally raised meats and farm fresh eggs. As well as fresh baked goods, a wide variety of high-quality, one-of-a kind, arts and crafts handmade by local artisans and a diverse selection of food that you can enjoy riverside or in our Giving Garden, located behind the Market. The Giving Garden was built last year as a legacy to celebrate Canada 150 and is home to raised garden beds, pathways and serves as a patio area during Market hours. It’s a lovely place to enjoy Market meals and relax. Food is grown by our dedicated garden committee and is given back to the community. Programs

such as yoga, a pop-up library and other offerings can be found on the patio during Market hours. Be sure to follow us on Facebook to keep in the know! As an independent non-profit co-operative, the New Glasgow Farmers Market relies on fundraising in order to operate and to take on projects large and small. We do like a great party, too. This year, join us on Saturday, July 28 for our first Luau at the Market! Guests will enjoy an authentic pig roast and full buffet, lots of live entertainment including a professional hula performance, poi fire spinning, limbo competition and, at 10pm, local band Dirty Rokkin Scoundrels take the stage! A Tiki bar will be operated by one of our vendors using spirits from our local distilleries and our local brewery will have beer on tap. We’re even bringing in some sand and palm trees and the Market building will be decked out just like an elegant, tropical resort. All guests get a free ride home anywhere in Pictou County with CHAD Transit! Tickets can be purchased on our website, ngfarmmarket.com/new/events. Also coming up this year is our 2nd annual All Hallows Ball on Saturday, October 20. Live music from the Pistol Packing Papas, costume contest and prizes. Ticket also includes a drink, a food credit for Smokinstein food truck and, once again, a free ride within Pictou County from CHAD Transit. Our final event for this year is our first-ever Winter Wonderland Gala. An elegant threecourse meal at the Market turned winter wonderland. A chance to pull out your finest gowns and fancy threads! Live music by Rabbit Town Blues Band and, of course, a ride home within Pictou County is also included! We sure hope you find time to visit us and experience all the fun firsthand, we have something for everyone and we know how to have fun!

RESORT AMENITIES AND We have so many amenities to enjoy on-site, you’ll never need to leave! Spend your day outside, lounging on our sandy, groomed beach. Play beach volleyball, enjoy a bonfire, or go for a swim in the beautiful, warm Northumberland Strait. Join in on a beach yoga class, held weekly (a schedule is available at the front desk). If sand isn’t your thing, you can also sunbathe or swim at our heated salt water pool. We have life jackets and toys for the kids. You can’t help but admire Graham’s Pond as you drive up our winding driveway. You may also notice some guests out enjoying the sunshine on our stand-up paddle boards, pedal boats, and canoes. These are all free for guests to use! There are a few other things to do around the property – play a game on our giant checkerboard, or one of our lawn games, or let the kids run free in our playground or sandbox. Take a ride around the property on one of our bikes; we have adult and child-sized available, as well as helmets for both. Our Oceanview and Rotunda dining is available from 7am to 9pm daily. We recommend reservations for evening dining, as we tend to fill up quickly with hungry guests coming to enjoy a delicious meal prepared by Executive Chef Kevin Harris and his team, all while basking in the gorgeous view of the Strait. You might even catch a show put on by one of our resident eagles. The Fireside Lounge is open from 4pm to 10pm every day. Come try a local beer or spirit, and listen to our Live at the Lodge series – local live entertainment every Thursday night, from the end of June through the end of August. The full line-up can be found on our website or at the front desk. If you are looking to get out for the day and check out surrounding areas, there are lots of places to visit. The town of Pictou is home to some great shops and restaurants, as well a few other places of note – the Northumberland Fisheries Museum is located on the waterfront and features a lighthouse research and interpretive centre, and a lobster hatchery where you can adopt and release your own baby lobster! The Hector Heritage Quay has a replica of the Ship Hector, as well as a great interpretive centre where you can learn the story of the first Scottish settlers to the area. The McCulloch House Museum and Genealogy Centre is another place to learn about the Scottish history of Pictou and see the original home of Dr. Thomas McCulloch, who is known as the “father of liberal education in Nova Scotia”. There are

also guided historical architecture walking tours available in the downtown area. Pictou County is home to several fantastic public beaches. Waterside is located off the Sunrise Trail, Melmerby is across the county in Little Harbour, and Caribou is just down the road from Pictou Lodge. Find yourself a designated driver and head out for a bit of a beer, wine, and/or spirits tour! Uncle Leo’s Brewery is located in Lyons Brook, and offers a tasting deck to enjoy a cold drink. Backstage Brewery in Stellarton has a great tasting room. Head out the Sunrise Trail and make stops at Caldera Distillery for a sip of whiskey, Tatamagouche Brewing Co. for a pint of beer, and Jost Vineyards for a glass of white or red wine. Drinks not your thing? That’s fine; there are so many other things to visit and explore! The New Glasgow Farmers Market runs every Saturday morning, and you are sure to come away with either food or craft treasures! Sugar Moon Farm is a great place to visit for some maple-based food and drink, and they also have great hiking trails. Seafoam Lavender Farm is a beautiful place to stop along the Sunrise Trail for some sweet-smelling goodies. Lismore Sheep Farm offers a great shop full of wool products. Author Sheree Fitch has a little book shop and dreamery called Mabel Murple’s, for the child in you. For some evening entertainment, in addition to our own Live at the Lodge weekly series, check out the summer

schedule for the deCoste Entertainment Centre in Pictou, or Glasgow Square in New Glasgow. We can also advise which local pubs/bars might have a band on any given night. So whether you want to stay on the property, or explore the area, we have so much to offer!

history

OF THE LODGE Originally built as Wentworth Lodge by a group of local entrepreneurs known as The Bungalow Camps Company, the property was purchased at auction in 1926 by the Canadian National Railway and renamed Pictou Lodge. Built in log cabin style, the main building of the resort contained the dining room and a large screened verandah lounge. Sleeping accommodation was provided in cabins of four, six and ten rooms. During the day, guests would congregate in the dining room and verandah, or enjoy the private beach and tennis courts. When the evenings were cool, fires were lit in the open stone fireplaces. Cabarets were held every Wednesday and Saturday evenings. The dancers came in from Halifax and were taken the next morning by horse and carriage to nearby Stellarton, to catch the return train. Over the years, Pictou Lodge has had many guests from around the world, including royalty such as King George VI and Princess Juliana of Holland (who stayed at the Lodge during World War II). During the 80s Brian Mulroney used one of our log cottages as his residence as he campaigned on his way to becoming Prime Minister of Canada. In 2006, we were pleased to have U.S. Secretary of State Ms. Condoleezza Rice stay with us during her visit to Canada. In 2014, we had

the pleasure of serving celebrity chef Jamie Oliver in our dining room. The Lodge was sold by the CNR in 1957 and was run by a number of owners over the years. In 1982 the property was purchased by Carol Ann and Peter VanWesten. They completed extensive restorations over the next decade, providing a wide variety of accommodation styles and recreation facilities for guests. In 1998, a successful nine-year partnership between Maritime Inns & Resorts and the VanWesten family was established. 2013 marked an exciting new beginning for Pictou Lodge under the private ownership of Brad Langille, as we

continually strive to improve and expand our facilities and services as a top-rated wedding, meeting, and travel destination. We have been named “One of Canada’s Loveliest Wedding Destinations” (Wedding Bells 2018), and “Canada’s Top 10 Wedding Food Venues” (Food Network 2016). We have received numerous awards including the Commitment to Excellence recognition for ongoing national certification, the Pictou County Shining Star Award and the Nova Scotia Tourism Industry Association Golden Hospitality Award as recognition for exceptional service in meeting – and exceeding – our guests’ expectations.

Mrs. MacGregor’s shortbreads are available for purchase at the Pictou Lodge Beach Resort gift shop, as well as at our own location at 59 Water Street in downtown Pictou. They make the perfect gift or souvenir for friends, family or corporate clients. We were honoured when Canadian Living Magazine named our shortbread as one of the best shortbreads in Canada. And thrilled when Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall became fans during their Royal visit! Why don’t you drop by our bakery and taste for yourself? We will be doubly thrilled to have you visit our shop! Did we mention we also make a whisky shortbread?

CHOCOLATE INDULGENCE FROM CHAPEL COVE Driving down Highway 289, on the way to the iconic Pictou County beach, named Melmerby Beach, you might see a sign for Chapel Cove Chocolate by the side of the road. That means Allan Keefe is working in his chocolate shop, which is a commercial kitchen he and his wife built in the back of their new house. He and his wife, Jan, both Nova Scotian ex-patriots, decided to move back to the property where Jan grew up, in Little Harbour. After Allan was downsized from his job, they bought a chocolate shop in North Vancouver and Allan learned how to be a chocolatier. Eventually they decided to simplify life, so they sold their shop, loaded up their truck (with their two horses in tow), and moved to picturesque Chapel Cove on the Northumberland Shore. Allan kept a chocolate machine thinking that chocolate-making would be a nice hobby. He placed some Easter Bunnies at the local store, and when the local Celiac community found out that the chocolate was gluten-free they sold out! He then approached the New Glasgow Farmers’ Market Cooperative to get a table and things started to heat up! Allan started making chocolate bars like the ones from his youth, but with a grown-up take on them. Allan wants you to know that real chocolate made with real cocoa butter is good for you. However this isn’t just his belief: it’s backed up in scientific research. At his shop, quality

chocolate, made in the European style, is made into chocolate bars, boxes, and bags of treats. And his products have certainly found a receptive audience. Allan likes to stay true to his roots, so he makes chocolates with a maritime theme. He started with a Nova Scotia flag, which is created by printing a flag image made of cocoa butter right on the chocolate. His next creation was chocolate lobsters. Add some chocolate seashells in a nice box, and you’ve got a real memory of beachcombing in Nova Scotia. Last year these boxes were gifts from the Town of Pictou to the captains of Tall Ships who visited Pictou Harbour. Quality and inclusiveness are important to Allan. He believes that it is important to make products that can satisfy different dietary restrictions. To that end, Allan searched out gluten-free rice crisps so that there is nothing in the shop to cross contaminate with gluten. His

chocolate is Kosher, and Halal, (which means he uses pure vanilla, not vanilla extract). He has sugar-free chocolate for diabetics, and most of his products are soy-free. Now Allan is getting more experimental with flavour pairings, that grown-up thing kicking in. Salted caramel is a big hit. Dark chocolate is his favourite, especially when paired with Himalayan salt and toasted almonds. Ginger and orange are a new pairing, and hot chili was developed this winter using the Farmers Market customers as product testers. His latest project is a Mocha Latte bar. Chapel Cove Chocolate products are available throughout Pictou County and in the Gift Shop at Pictou Lodge. Guests of Pictou Lodge enjoyed the mint seashells so much that they asked for more, and their request became the Smooth Mint Bar. If you enjoy a little chocolate tonight, think of us, and we wish you sweet dreams!
