PEGGY’S COVE

The most-photographed in Canada, this iconic whiteand-red lighthouse lashed by sea spray proudly marks the entrance to the sheltered cove that’s filled with gently bobbing fishing boats. It’s a Nova Scotian image for every visitor’s photo album.

It’s postcard-perfect, even shrouded in mist.

OAK ISLAND

Nova Scotia’s world-famous sailing ambassador Bluenose II, a replica of the original schooner depicted on the Canadian dime, has drawn thousands of visitors to the Lunenburg waterfront. You can experience the iconic ship yourself with a two-hour cruise when she’s in port.

The Oak Island mystery refers to stories of buried treasure and unexplained objects. Explore Oak Island, where one of the world’s most famous mysteries awaits. Tours must be booked online ahead of time, as access to the island is otherwise prohibited due to the ongoing treasure hunt.

BLACK LOYALIST HERITAGE CENTRE

ROSS FARM MUSEUM

Step back in time at Ross Farm Museum and explore 60 acres of rolling farmland to discover what life was like on a Nova Scotia family farm over 100 years ago. An authentic living heritage site, much of the farm remains the same as it was in the 1800s. The museum is open year-round so plan to climb aboard for a sleigh ride!

Enjoy the view of Birchtown Bay when you climb up the Shaw Turret, which commemorates all Black Loyalist communities.

Visit the Lindsay Gallery for a multimedia presentation of the Black Loyalist Journey from Africa to the United States, then Nova Scotia, and back to Africa. Explore the virtual copy of Carlton’s Book of Negroes and search for your ancestors.

CRESCENT BEACHES

The South Shore offers tons of beaches and two unique ones, both named Crescent Beach!

The one located in LaHave is a 2 km long crescent shaped beach and the only drivable beach in Nova Scotia. The other located in Lockeport is a white sand beach causeway that connects the peninsula of Lockeport to mainland Nova Scotia. This iconic landscape was featured on the Canadian 1954 series $50 bill.

KEJIMKUJIK NATIONAL PARK AND NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE The heart of our region, and the centre of the UNESCO Southwest Nova Biosphere Reserve, Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site abounds with untamed natural beauty, wildlife, and rich Mi’kmaw history. Please note, for 2020 camping is limited due to renovations, but the Park remains open. Mahone Bay

Cycle or hike the Rum Runners Trail along our beautiful coastline. The trail takes you past photogenic fishing villages, sandy beaches, seaside artisan shops and cafés. Watch movies under the stars at the Hubbards Amphitheatre at the Hubbards Community Waterfront Park or at Shipyards Landing on the Bridgewater waterfront.

The Chester Playhouse is especially well-known for its six-week Summer Theatre Festival. The Astor Theatre in Liverpool is host to current cinema and host to live musical and main stage acts from all corners of the world.

Fall in love with the South Shore as the hot, sunny days of summer give way to invigorating autumn air and horizons decorated with crimson, gold and amber leaves as far as the eye can see. This time of year, we are known for our festivals, outdoor adventures and the delicious rewards of another harvest season. Grab your camera for a vibrant seaside display of handmade scarecrows in Mahone Bay or whirligigs and weathervanes in Shelburne. Our year-round moderate temperatures make our beaches a popular fall hiking destination. Provincial parks contain some highly accessible beach hikes. Pack a picnic and head to a lovely family farm to pick high-bush blueberries or Thanksgiving cranberries. The U-pick at Terra Beata Cranberry Farm opens on October 3. Fill your pail with the bright crimson berries and stop by the Bog Store for some sweet dried cranberry snacks or a refreshing cran-raspberry juice.

The coast is a paradise for birders in late February and March, when tens of thousands of brant geese gather to feed along the shores of Hawk Beach, Clark’s Harbour, and Cape Sable Island. It’s Lobster Season, indulge in

lobster rolls Nova Scotians have some pretty inventive ways of making lobster rolls interesting, but the key ingredient is fresh lobster! The South Shore lobster season opens the last Monday in November and runs until end of May. You can visit Barrington, the “Lobster Capital of Canada”, or any of these great restaurants during lobster season for a true taste of Nova Scotia.

Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse

LIGHTHOUSE ROUTE ROAD TRIP Historic lighthouses, anchored on the South Shore’s rugged coastline, have cautioned seafarers for centuries and offer a glimpse into our rich marine heritage. Travel the aptly named Lighthouse Route, from St. Margaret’s Bay all the way southwest to Wood’s Harbour, and you’ll encounter more than 30 of these picturesque beacons, many of them restored from the original towers that are hundreds of years old. This distinctive “hunchbacked” light is one of the oldest surviving lighthouses in Nova Scotia. Become an unofficial lighthouse keeper and climb the tower to toot the hand-cranked foghorn. There is a sandy beach, swimming, birding, and a community hall where snacks may be available. Many festivals and activities take place here in the summer, especially lobster dinners.

Since 1832, LaHave has been connected to East LaHave, located on the opposite side of the LaHave river, via a cable ferry. In 1982, Brady E. Himmelman retired after 35 years of service, being the longest serving captain of LaHave ferries. In 2010, the LaHave Ferry II was replaced by a 14 car capacity ferry named in the honour of Brady E Himmelman. The Ferry is operated by The Province of Nova Scotia and costs $7 for a one-way ticket. The trip lasts about five minutes one way.

GREENFIELD AND CALEDONIA Recommended Scenic Drive Take the Kejimkujik Scenic Drive (Route 8) from Liverpool to Annapolis Royal in late September through early October, and you’ll be rewarded with spectacular fall foliage. Stop mid-way through your journey and rent a canoe or hike and explore the beautiful Mersey River in Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site. The crimson maples, golden hemlocks, yellow aspens, and russet oaks, along with their reflections in lakes, rivers, and streams, will delight you.

No trip through the bustling hamlet of Greenfield is complete without picking up a coconut cream pie from Stew’s Corner Convenience and Gas. They stock most everything you need for a week at the cabin, as Greenfield is the access point into the lake country of Molega and Ponhook—a maze of roads and paths allow walkers, runners, and 44 • novascotia.com/southshore

cyclists to discover probably the best lakes in Nova Scotia. You can also pick up tasty food from the Kespuwitk Eats ‘n’ Treats and Gas Bar, or if you are lucky to be travelling through in late July, check out the Annual Planked Salmon Supper hosted by the Greenfield and District Volunteer Fire Department.

Caledonia has long been the gateway to the Tobeatic Wilderness Area, and now Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site, with a rich tradition of outdoor activity and adventure. For 2020, camping is limited at the Park whilst extensive renovations take place, but you can choose to camp at the new Gateway Campground, or choose a roof over your head at the Whitman Inn, Mersey River Chalets, or B&B Art of Germany. Stop in at the Hollow Log Café and ask about their Big Rig Challenge.

Past the majestic colonial houses of sea captains of old, sits historic Fort Point Lighthouse. Climb up and sound the hand-cranked foghorn. The rich history and culture are reflected in the area’s festivals, museums and performing arts venues.

Shelburne

SHELBURNE & AREA Shelburne has a deep multicultural history. Originally known as Port Roseway, Shelburne was once occupied by Mi’kmaq, Acadians, Blacks, and American Loyalists.

In 1783, during the American Revolution, 3,000 Black Loyalists escaped to freedom in Shelburne, making Shelburne one of the largest cities in North America. Shelburne found its calling in the fishing and shipbuilding industry, but racial tensions forced the Black Loyalists to move to nearby Birchtown, making this land the world’s largest free African population outside of Africa, in the late 18th century. The Shelburne area provides unique experiences that are rich in culture and adventure while providing visitors with places to relax and unwind in a surrounding of historic treasures, wilderness, and beauty.

Meisner’s Beach in East River East River is the western launching point for the Aspotogan Peninsula. Just down the 329 you’ll find Meisner’s Beach—a wonderful spot for a stroll and to watch the sunset over Mahone Bay.

Known for its three kilometres of sand, smooth pebbles, and clear water. It provides the only access to Gaff Point, which offers spectacular hikes in the woods through a protected wilderness park.

A one-kilometre white sand beach between the open Atlantic Ocean and a fresh water lake and tidal estuary. Popular surfing location year-round with access via White Point Beach Resort.

Just east of the junction of routes 325 and 208, you’ll find a small picnic park under a stand of oak and maple on a small brook.

The parkland known as Bridgewater Woodland Gardens was donated to the Town of Bridgewater in 1921 by H. W. Owen with the intent that the area be used as a recreational park. The park is made up of trails and pathways, wild woodlands, a sizable pond, and a variety of plant and animal life.

Pine Grove Park 44 Highway 8, Milton This 21-hectare community park features graveled walking/jogging trails, a picnic park overlooking the river, and a beautiful path planted with rhododendrons, azaleas, and magnolias by Captain Dick Steele, a member of the Order of Canada for his plant breeding work. There is a small beach to pull up a canoe or kayak for a picnic. Year-round park.

Port Medway Lighthouse Park

Crescent Beach Lunenburg Connecting the LaHave Islands to the mainland, this beach stretches out from the shore to Georges Island and provides a popular beach destination for tourists throughout the summer.

Back Harbour Trail (4 km) This 4-km point-to-point walking trail begins behind the old Train Station in downtown Lunenburg. Flat and wide, the trail offers views of the harbour, rest stations, and interpretive sites.

Barrington Bay Trail (2.3 km) Barrington Bay is one of the most scenic trails throughout the municipality. The trail borders Barrington Bay, with beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean all along the trail.

Castle Rock Trail (3.2 km from parking area) Hike, bike or ride your ATV to the heights of Castle Rock, looking over East River. The panoramic views across Mahone Bay are breathtaking. There are 3 different routes— easiest, moderate and most difficult—so hikers of all levels can enjoy the trail.

Centennial Trail (8 km) Off King Street, Bridgewater. A gentle grade winds through a natural treed area to a footbridge that spans the LaHave River and overlooks salmon pools.

Chester Connection Trail (35 km) Formerly part of the rail line along the South Shore, this scenic trail with many spectacular ocean views starts in East River and continues to Martin’s River.

Graves Island Provincial Park Trail (4 km) Exit 7 off Highway 103. Four short trails, well suited for family groups, take hikers around

Hirtle’s Beach and Gaff Point, Kingsburg (7 km round trip) Off the beaten path, offers great scenery with a mixture of beach, estuary, forest and rugged coastline complete with unique geology and a variety of wildlife.

Jordan River Trail (2.6 km) Haydens Road, Shelburne. Follow the trail east across the Jordan River through wind-swept pine to views of a large saltwater marsh and great bird-watching habitat.

Jubilee Park Trails (1.5 km) Hedge Row, Mahone Bay. A recreation park with supervised outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts. Two trails, connected by smaller footpaths, pass through pine stands and open out onto the ball fields.

Kejimkujik National Park Seaside Harbour Rocks Trail (6.4 km return) St. Catherine’s River Road, Port Joli. Follow the shoreline to see harbour seals basking on the rocks just off the trail. Park Harbour Rocks Trail (6.4-km loop): Branching off the Harbour Rocks Trail, the Port Joli Head Trail crosses the extensive bog on boardwalks and follows the coastline.

Lion’s Park Trail (3 km) This park is ideally located on Route 12 and houses a picnic area and walking trail that connects to Ross Farm Museum. The path continues to course along Lake Lawson with rest stops along the way.

Lockeport Walking Trail (4 km) A 4-kilometre (2.5-mile) walk; boardwalk, sand dunes, two old CNR trestle bridges, salt marsh; views of traditional Cape Island fishing boats, birds. Interpretive signage.

Sable River Foot Bridge Trail (3.5 km)

Route 332 between Bridgewater and Lunenburg. This Municipal Activity and Recreation Complex is enjoyed year-round and is especially popular in winter with crosscountry skiers. Eleven well-marked trails of varying difficulty.

Highway 103, Shelburne. Parking is available at the Chef’s Table restaurant. Follow Freeman’s Mill Road over the swinging bridge, through a strip of vegetation separating two residential properties and past an old school house (now the fire department). Turn right and walk 500 metres down the road to the abandoned rail bed on the left. Follow this trail across the river and back to the Chef’s Table.

Miller Point Peace Park (1 km) Highway 3, Dayspring. A family picnic park just outside Bridgewater, with a level, smooth, and wide trail system winding through woods along the LaHave River.

Pine Grove Park Trail (1.6 km) Highway 8, Milton. This 22-hectare park offers graveled walking trails though a mature pine stand featuring azaleas, rhododendrons, and magnolias. Parking and washrooms are available.

Port L’Hebert Pocket Wilderness Trail (3 km) Highway 103, Port L’Hebert. About 30 kilometres from Liverpool, a large road sign indicates the start of the trail. Huge granite boulders, left behind by glaciers thousands of years ago, and covered with centuries-old lichens, are scattered throughout the forest.

Roseway River Trail (about 1 km) Shelburne. The Roseway River Trail crosses the Roseway River near Falls Lane on two small train bridges. The trail follows the abandoned railway bed and ends at the road near the entrance to the Islands Provincial Park.

Ruby’s Trail (5 km) Located on the Murphy Family Tree Farm in New Ross. With beautiful vistas and wooded areas this new trail was created in memorian to their late granddaughter Ruby and in gratitude to the community who offered such support and compassion during their time of loss.

Rum Runners Trail (119 km) This multi-use trail connects Lunenburg and Halifax, passing through Mahone Bay, Chester, and Hubbards. Experience the coastal communities: savour local flavours at awardwinning restaurants, explore attractions and seaside artisan shops. Multiple trailheads.

Shelburne Rail Trail (4.8 km return) 63 King Street, Shelburne. Located across from the Shelburne Fire Hall, this pleasant community walking path follows the abandoned rail line from King Street to Roseway River.

Sherose Island Nature Trail (1 km) This walking trail is located at the end of the Barrington Municipal Arena (12 Park Lane, Sherose Island) parking lot, and goes through wooded areas overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

Picnic area and playground nearby.

South Shore Annapolis Trail (122 km) This year-round trail connects Goose Chase Road in New Germany to the town of Bridgetown in the Annapolis Valley and Caledonia in the region of Queens. Suitable for hikers, cyclists, equestrians, skiers, and ATV and snowmobile drivers. Parking is available at various access points along the trail.

Wood’s Harbour Multi-Purpose Trail (about 1.5 km) This trail follows what was once the rail line that ran through Wood’s Harbour, and used for transporting passengers, mail, fish, boats, and more. The last run was in 1969. In 1984 the ties and rails were removed.

Woodlawn Multi Use Trail (34.6 km) Interconnected shared multi use trail in eastern Shelburne County to the Queen’s County line at Wilkins Lake to join the Queen’s County trail system into Port Mouton and Summerville Beach Provincial Park.
