Living your best life
Profiter de la vie au maximum
“The best possible preparation for the future is a well lived present.”
« Bien vivre le présent est la meilleure préparation possible pour l’avenir. »
–George H. Brimhall
There are two days that you cannot ever change; yesterday and tomorrow. Some of us can get caught up in things that have happened in the past, that we end up living there. Some people are so focused on the future that they miss past lessons, ignore current happenings and are just missing out on life. Life gives each of us the ability to make positive daily choices and we hold the power to make great things happen! Every day, you have the ability to make any change you want that will help you live your best life. Being true to you and living an authentic life is certainly easier said than done. It means taking a long hard look at you and your life by being open and acknowledging some of your weaknesses and deciding you want better. It is definitely a scary thing to do and it is that fear that makes people tend to look the other way. Often people look at weakness as a sign of failure but that is not the case. It takes strength to be open to see the true you and that includes recognizing those areas that you wish to change for the better. Sometimes it isn’t an issue of living in the past or worrying about the future that creates challenges, sometimes it is the pressures of society that force us into doing or being something we are not. Because of constant outside influences, we can all become a bit lost, forgetting who we really are. To rediscover our best life, we all have to be self-aware and be open to constructive criticism from those who truly have our best interest at heart and you must be willing to ask for that help and feedback. So what is the payoff? Happiness, self-love and a healthy, positive outlook on life. A greater sense of self as well as self-confidence will be what you gain. You will find that tackling challenges or difficulties that come your way will be easier. You will be ready and able to cope by making necessary changes within your life without losing you in the process. The search for living your best life is not a singular journey and the PSP Halifax team are here to help. In this issue of Vitality, you will find important information about all of our programs and services. I strongly encourage you to reach out to gain access as these programs are built with you in mind. We have placed significant focus on core health and wellness programs, including overall nutrition and unit initiatives, physical fitness and are excited to include a feature on Juno Catering. So today, focus on the now and being present. Be connected with the life you have created and tune into one area you would like to make better. Only YOU can make that change! It isn’t about finding perfection, but more so, becoming your best self. Joni Sawler, Senior Manager, PSP Canadian Forces Moral and Welfare Services 902-721-8410
Force Performance was developed to help CAF members achieve better results on their annual Force test.
Force Performance BY GEOFF PELLERIN, 12 WING FITNESS AND SPORTS INSTRUCTOR
Force Performance began as an idea by a Fitness and Sports Instructor by the name of Dave Carr here at the Shearwater 12 Wing base. Dave started the idea after being approached by a few CAF members that wanted a little bit more training for the Force test. Dave then started a class voluntarily, with a few members once a week that was challenging and specific to the tasks performed during the Force test. Dave then handed this class off to me and I continued with one session a week for those who were interested. The main goal of the class was to introduce components of the Force test, practice these implements while also using other techniques to improve one’s overall fitness. PSP ACTIVITY GUIDE – 2020 | 9
RYAN MELANSON, TRIDENT STAFF
We kicked off the first class on September 10th, 2019 at the Shearwater gym. Classes are Tuesday and Thursdays every week at 0730 until 0830 and are held in the functional room, gymnasium and sometimes in the cardio room. This class is offered to anyone who wants to improve their force test results, achieve incentive or just to improve all round fitness. Incentive means that you have scored high enough on the force evaluation in order to claim a reward. These rewards consist of four levels: Bronze, silver, gold and platinum. The class is designed for members to attend class and put in hard work so that they can achieve one of these rewards. Regardless of what level you are aiming to achieve, everyone in the group is striving towards improvement. This helps facilitate motivation and enjoyment within the class itself. Force performance will be run by the experienced staff here at the Shearwater wing who are excited about the program and want to see success within the program. We want the members to get the most out of the program as they can and eventually reach the ultimate goal of improving upon Force test scores. We encourage our members to show up ready to work hard, listen to instructor and enjoy the session as much as possible. As a staff, we want the members
Participants focus on perfecting exercises that are included as components of the Force test.
leaving with a sense of accomplishment all while learning something in the process. The number one priority is the benefit to those participating. Consistency will always show best results. This means that if you are coming to the class regularly, then you are guaranteed to see improvement in not only your force scores, but your overall fitness,
your health and energy levels. We strive to promote healthy lifestyle while bringing knowledge and advice to the members of the CAF. In the fitness industry we call it “longevity”, which means the actions we take in our lives will provide us with a longer, healthier, more fulfilling life.
We are here to help.

Gentle Yoga More than just a beginner’s class.
HMCS WHITEHORSE
BY RYAN MELANSON, TRIDENT STAFF
ABOVE: Yoga is a popular form of an exercise on board ships while deployed, but for those who aren’t experienced, jumping into a class can be intimidating.
Yoga is a beneficial form of low-impact exercise that’s been proven to increase flexibility, cardiovascular and circulatory health, and muscle strength. For those who haven’t tried before, however, jumping into an introductory yoga class can be an intimidating experience, and that feeling can be compounded for CAF members who may be suffering from chronic injuries or other potential obstacles.
PSP Halifax’s new Gentle Yoga program is designed with those types of newcomers in mind. Fleet Fitness and Sports staff ran a six-week pilot program in June of 2019 and received positive feedback from participants, with a second six-week cycle already being planned for later this fall. “We wanted to offer a yoga program that anyone can benefit from without feeling intimidated or nervous to go to class—people who had never done yoga before or people who had specific limitations that made them feel like they couldn’t take a yoga class,” said instructor Tammie Barriage, who took the lead on the first pilot program. PSP ACTIVITY GUIDE – 2020 | 13
LEFT: The Gentle Yoga program is meant to be an easier introduction than traditional classes, and is designed specifically to work around injuries or limitations. BELOW: Formation Halifax members take a yoga class at the Fleet Fitness, Sports and Recreation Centre.

FIS HALIFAX
BOTTOM: HMCS Toronto personnel take in a yoga class during their recent Op REASSURANCE deployment.
“By having people register beforehand, we’re able to get a feel for some of the limitations we’re working with ahead of time, so we can have some specific tools ready to work with.” Barriage has special training in YogaFit for Warriors, a course that was created by veterans and designed with military members in mind. Along with the usual ways in which yoga can help with pain or injury recovery, YogaFit for Warriors also zeros in on how yoga can benefit people suffering from post traumatic stress disorder or who have recovered from traumatic brain injury. It utilizes different breathing techniques, slower movements and meditation practices designed to release trauma and stress from the body. PO2 David Sanford, a naval engineer Naval Fleet School (Atlantic), said he’s previously heard about yoga changing people’s lives, and after giving it a try with the pilot program, he now understands why. “I have a nerve issue in my shoulder and I wanted to increase my flexibility,” he said.
14 | PSP ACTIVITY GUIDE – 2020
“It was one of the best things I ever decided to do. I really enjoyed it and looked forward to waking up early to get started. Tammie was an awesome instructor, creating a stress free relaxing hour that made an excellent start to the day.” PO2 Sanford added that the classes gave him significant relief from some of his nagging pains, and he’s now looking into signing up for further classes alongside his wife. Other participants echoed comments about the program being an accessible and stress free way to introduce yoga into their routines. Barriage said interest was high in the first pilot program with a waitlist for potential participants after the slots filled up, so she expects more good results to come from a second pilot this fall. CAF members interested in registering for the next Gentle Yoga program can reach out to Barriage or any other PSP Halifax Fitness and Sports staff for more information.
Say hello to MEGA Sports When you think of PSP sports programs, it’s time to add MEGA sports to the list of championship events. BY VIRGINIA BEATON, TRIDENT STAFF
This category of sports tournament will bring together Cock of the Fleet (COTF), Cock of the Walk (COTW), and Wing Cup participants in a combined format that will ensure a great competitive sports experience. The following questions, with answers supplied by PSP Halifax fitness and sports coordinator Isaac Habib, will supply information for anybody who wants to learn about this format. Q. What is MEGA sports?
Q. How are MEGA sports different from COTF, COTW, and Wing Cup? A. Cock of the Fleet (COTF) and Cock of the Walk (COTW) competitions would be tournaments that consist of only Fleet units and Stadacona units respectively. Wing Cup would be sport competitions based out of 12 Wing Shearwater without the participation of Halifax. Any time we combine both Shearwater and Halifax in the same tournament or have inter-unit competition between COTW and COTF, we call these championships MEGAS. Q. What sports are included in MEGA sports? A. Basketball, curling, floor hockey, golf, hockey, running, soccer, softball, volleyball, and badminton. Bowling and squash have been removed recently with the STADPLEX closure. At the beginning of the year we like to hold a meeting with all sports reps to discuss the sports being run, the schedule, and the rules. Q. Who organizes the MEGA tournaments, and where are they held? A. PSP as a whole runs these tournaments but specifically the Fitness and Sports Coordinators in Halifax and Shearwater along with their fitness and sports instructors. We host these tournaments using our ball diamonds, soccer fields, rinks and gyms both on the Shearwater and the Halifax side.
THE
HALIFAX ARMY NAVY STORE
PTE SARINA MCNEILL
A. The term MEGA refers to any tournament/competition that has COTW, COTF and or Wing Cup units/ships participating and competing against one another.
Softball is one of the MEGA sports, with winners proceeding to regional tournaments.
Q. Where can I get more information about MEGA sports? A. Sports Coordinators rely heavily on the sports reps of each unit and their alternates. These contacts are updated routinely but as the forwarding of sports info is often a secondary duty, sometimes not everyone gets the message. We invite people to join our Formation Halifax and Shearwater Sports page on Facebook. We like to post pertinent info on this page as much as we can. Also, be sure to check out our PSP weekly updates that are sent through DWAN. Q. How can I get involved with MEGA sports? A. It’s a good idea to send all inquiries through your unit sports reps. We understand that these contacts may change from day to day or week to week so above all, you can reach out to your local PSP sports coordinator for more information anytime.

The CFB Halifax Mariner’s women’s soccer team pose together after their latest gold-medal victory at the 2019 CAF Atlantic Regional Championship.
Leaving it all on the field
Halifax Mariners racking up soccer medals and accolades. BY RYAN MELANSON, TRIDENT STAFF
Sport is serious business in the Canadian Armed Forces, and athletes of the highest calibre can be found in uniform at bases and wings across the country. Halifax is no different, and in recent years, the women of the CFB Halifax Mariners soccer team have helped prove the east coast can compete with the best the CAF has to offer. Through the last 14 months, the Mariners have won two sets of gold medals from CAF Atlantic Region Championship tournaments, along with a gold medal from CAF Nationals in 2018, and the team also recently received the 2019 Alexander Keith’s Award for Formation Halifax Team of the Year. It’s a testament to the growth of women’s soccer across the Atlantic Region as a whole, but also the hard work and hours of practice put in by members of the Halifax club, said OS Kelly Kisa, a team member who juggles soccer alongside her work as a marine technician with HMCS Charlottetown. 18 | PSP ACTIVITY GUIDE – 2020
“The team is made up of a great group of leaders who fill the role of coaches, captains and teammates. They put a lot of their own time into recruiting and preparing for regionals and nationals, and the rest of the lineup is made up of girls who are really committed to the team and who want to win.” OS Kisa was on the roster for both the 2018 and 2019 soccer seasons, and said that commitment to winning and the ability to gel together as a group allows for a calm and measured style of play that has often lead to success. The recent high point for the team was their championship victory on the national stage in Borden last fall, where they caught fire and rolled over a strong team from CFB Edmonton by a score of 5-0 in the gold-medal game. Capt Kim O’Rourke, the Mariners team captain, said it was strong play by her team, rather lack of skill from their opponents, that made the difference. “They (Edmonton) really were a strong team, centrally and defensively, but we built on our cohesion as a team on the field as the tournament progressed, and it all came together in the end.”

The Mariners followed up their 2018 victories with another Atlantic Region gold medal this past August, and recently competed at Nationals again, with the 2019 tournament taking place at 8 Wing Trenton. The women weren’t able to win a medal this year, but still played a hard-fought tournament against some of the CAF’s best. “After hearing the feedback of the veterans on the level of soccer at Nationals, there has definitely been an increase in the level of
competition this year. It was great to participate in high level soccer again,” said A/SLt Cassandra Labrie following the tournament. Committing to a season isn’t easy, with players practicing and playing in local leagues in the evenings on top of busy work schedules. It wouldn’t be possible without the institutional support the CAF puts into sports programs through PSP, or the local support given by chains of command who allow their staff members to give PSP ACTIVITY GUIDE – 2020 | 19

“For a lot of people, Nationals also gives a chance to reconnect with people from all over Canada that they’ve worked or done courses with in the past. It’s a great community to be a part of.” Anyone interested in playing with the Mariners for the 2020 soccer season is encouraged to reach out, whether you’re new to the area or just looking to get back into the sport.

How to save on home and auto insurance
If you’ve been shopping around for home or auto insurance lately, you may have noticed that premiums have gone up. More road accidents—especially those caused by distracted driving—and the growing cost to repair technologically-advanced vehicles are major contributors to this trend. Plus, more extreme and frequent weather events are resulting in more claims. So how can you reduce your premium? Here are some ways to save. Opt for group insurance
As a member of the CAF Community, you have access to exclusive group rates on your home and auto insurance, thanks to the partnership between CANEX and The Personal. The Personal has been one of Canada’s leading group insurance companies since 1974 and partnered with CANEX for over 30 years.
Bundle your insurance
When you insure all your home and auto policies with one company, you could be eligible for additional savings.
Keep your driving record clean
If you don’t speed and keep a safe following distance, your good driving habits could translate to savings. No recent traffic violations generally mean lower premiums. Clients of The Personal can get rewarded for their good driving by signing up for Ajusto®, a telematics program that can be accessed from your smartphone. Ajusto® monitors your driving habits and can help you save on your insurance after only 100 days.1
Go green
Not only will you save money on fluctuating gas costs, you may also reduce your insurance premium, with savings available for driving a hybrid or electric vehicle. Don’t forget to look into government incentives too!
Protect your home
Alert and prevention systems such as a water damage prevention system or a centrally monitored burglar and fire alarm system could add a priceless level of security to your home. When installed, they may also reduce your premium costs. Access innovative prevention programs with The Personal: Alert™ syncs a water and freeze detector to your smartphone and sends a real-time notification if a problem is detected, allowing you to react quickly and limit any water damage. Radar™ gives you advance warning about weather risks within 500 metres of your home, so you can take steps to protect your property.
Increase your deductible
The deductible is the amount you pay when you make a claim. The higher your deductible, the lower your premium.

What else will quitting do for you?
BY MADISON WALSH, PSP HEALTH PROMOTION SPECIALIST
Have you tried to quit smoking cold turkey, with no success? You’re not alone.
• Improved taste and smell • Healthier skin and reduced wrinkles around the mouth • Easier breathing • Reduced exposure to second hand smoke for your family and friends • Significant financial savings (about $200 a month)! • Softer and shinier hair • Whiter teeth • Fresher breath • You and your clothes will smell better • You’ll become a role model for others
Our data shows that up to 48.5% of military personnel have tried to quit cold turkey. This is amazing news thou it means that nearly 50% of all smokers want to quit! Unfortunately, quitting smoking is no easy task. On average, it takes 7-10 attempts at quitting before success is achieved. But don’t worry—Health Promotion is here to help! We all know quitting smoking will have significant positive effects on your health. The best part is, if you make the leap and quit smoking, you won’t have to wait long before you start to experience the benefits. Within 8 hours, the oxygen levels in your blood return to normal levels. All the carbon monoxide is eliminated from your body within 24 hours, and the nicotine is eliminated within 48 hours. Looking at the slightly longer-term, your risk of a heart attack reduces by half within one year. Within 10 years, your risk of lung cancer falls to half that of a smoker, and your risk of a heart attack is the same as someone who has never smoked.
All of this sounds great, but not sure how to make it happen? Well Health Promotion and CF Health Services work together to provide a pharmacist-led, tobacco and vaping cessation initiative; Quit It! This program is open to all CAF members. If you are looking for support to quit smoking, please contact us at: 902-722-4956 or email HFXhealthpromotion@forces.gc.ca.

Did you know that your chances of successfully quitting smoking are doubled when you use Nicotine Replacement Therapies? Nicotine is the main reason why people become addicted to cigarettes. Some NRT provides lower, more controlled doses of nicotine, and then gradually reduces the amount overtime. This results in decreased cravings and withdrawal symptoms, allowing the individual to focus on breaking the habit of smoking cigarettes, and leading to higher chances of success.

Unit Health and Wellness Initiatives

One of the many functions of Health Promotion Services is to support units who are working to improve their health and wellness. We provide this support in a variety of ways, some of which include helping to plan initiatives, providing personnel for briefings or education sessions, loaning technology such as pedometers and Fitbits and providing prizes as incentive for participants. For this issue of Vitality Magazine, we have chosen to highlight the wellness challenge that was organized by the Naval Force Readiness (NFR) Unit. Our hope is that this success will inspire other units to do the same and work to improve the health of their personnel. NFR organized a pedometer challenge during the month of July. The challenge ran for four weeks with 15 participants who took a total of 4,371,316 steps. That equates to walking 3330 kilometers! Health Promotion partnered with NFR on this health initiative by providing pedometers for participants to use as well as providing prizes for the top three participants.
We spoke to CPO2 Jenkins, the organizer of the pedometer challenge, and here is what he had to say: “Naval Force Readiness is a small unit of approximately 34 people, both military and civilian. As the self-appointed event organizer, I was looking for physical fitness opportunities that personnel can do individually or collectively, throughout the workday, or on their own time. The staff at NFR, for the most part, pursue physical activities on their own or with family. The intent wasn’t for bragging rights, it was to encourage staff to find opportunities to step away from their desks and enjoy the beautiful summer months. Nonetheless, I was pleasantly surprised by the participation (given how busy we all are) and it did promote healthy competition as well as esprit de corps within the unit.” Congratulations to the Naval Force Readiness Unit for organizing such a successful wellness challenge! If you would like to organize a wellness challenge for your unit, please contact Health Promotion Services by emailing: HFXHealthPromotion@forces.gc.ca or by calling: 902-722-4956.

CFB Halifax Curling Club set for the season With new promotions, casual leagues and event space for rent, there’s plenty for CAF members to take advantage of. BY RYAN MELANSON, TRIDENT STAFF
As Canada’s largest military base, CFB Halifax is home to a number of top-calibre sports and recreation facilities, and that includes the CFB Halifax Curling Club in Windsor Park.
Operated by PSP Halifax, the club features six sheets of professionally maintained ice along with all the other expected services and amenities, and is used heavily by CAF/DND as well as the wider HRM community. Club manager Floyd Otto said staff has recently been busy preparing the ice and hosting open houses, and with summer officially over, the 2019/2020 curling season is now underway.

“We’re getting our leagues set for the year and getting people in to start curling, and we want to get new curlers out there, or curlers who are maybe trying to get back into the game.” A number of six-month leagues of various age and skill levels run through each season, but to open things up for newcomers, the club is hoping to experiment with three-month Fun League memberships that come at a reduced price and don’t require a half year commitment. The plan is to run the half-season league on Wednesday nights this winter. For CAF members with busy schedules or deployments coming up, the 12 week timetable and later draw times may allow them to participate, and serving members also receive a 20 percent discount when registering. “We understand some people, especially our military members, might not be able to commit to a full six months at a time and pay that full membership fee, so we’re trying something different,” Otto said. The curling club also has an active Juniors program that runs weekly on Saturday mornings through the season, with a 7-11 age group and an older group for those 19 and under. Otto said a number of young curlers from military families sign up each year, and the club is hoping to welcome in even more. Junior fees run $96 for the younger group and $120 for the U19 league, with a $10 discount for military families.

“It’s a very accessible price that allows them to join from October to the beginning of April. It’s a great recreational sport, it doesn’t cost a lot, and it’s right here on the base, so we certainly encourage people to take advantage of that for their kids.” PSP also realizes that curling isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but that doesn’t mean they can’t make use of a great base facility. The building’s upper lounge overlooking the ice is available to rent for social functions including dinners, conferences, and even wedding receptions. The space can accommodate up to 130 people for a sitdown meal or up to 250 people for more casual gatherings, with a fully-licensed bar and a sound system with microphone and podium. The calendar is already filling up for office parties during the holiday season, but Otto said there’s plenty of availability left. Military groups can typically rent the space for six hours, with a bartender, for less than $300. “It’s something to consider for a military group that has any type of event happening, and they have the option of including curling as well if they’d like to. We want to ensure people know we’re here, because when we do get a unit that rents out the facility for a function, they usually come back and rent it again. It’s a great option for them.” Full information on the various curling leagues, membership fees and facility rentals is available online http://cfbhalifaxcurling.com, and Otto encouraged anyone interested to drop by or give the club a call at 902-455-1444. “We’ve got a lot to offer and we’d love to hear from anyone interested in curling or making use of our space,” he said.

PO2 Barry Noseworthy led the first PSP Floorball Clinic for youth hockey players earlier this year. Children from ages 5–7 earned the basics of the sport and improved their hockey skills over seven weeks at the Shearwater Fitness, Sports and Recreation Centre.

Floorball
helping young hockey players learn the basics BY RYAN MELANSON, TRIDENT STAFF
PO2 Barry Noseworthy has been playing hockey for decades, and as a father to a six-year-old son, he knows that the game can be a lot of fun for kids as well. It can be tough to develop skills at such a young age, however, and PO2 Noseworthy is hoping to help correct that with a new program under the PSP Community Recreation banner. Along with fellow coach Damen Meade and coordinator Matt MacKenzie, he’s developed a floorball program for children aged five to seven at the Shearwater Fitness, Sports and Recreation Centre. Floorball is a game with similarities to floor hockey, but with a number of changes that move the game away from the physical style of hockey, putting the focus on technique. Sticks are smaller and must stay below the waist, without touching the sticks of other players, there’s no jumping pushing, shoving or checking, and the ball cannot be touched with hands or arms. Floorball has been popular for decades in Nordic countries and elsewhere in Europe, and is just starting to gain steam in North America in recent years. PO2 Noseworthy doesn’t actually have a background in the game, though he’s attended countless CAF regional and national tournaments for traditional hockey. He got the idea after Halifax hosted the Under 19 World Floorball Championships this past May – he checked out a few live games and was immediately impressed by what he saw. “I noticed that it’s a very unique sport compared to hockey; there’s no slapshots, no smacking or hooking or slashing with the sticks. It’s all about skill,” he said. “I thought it would be a great way to start teaching young kids how to move the ball around, which then correlates into moving the puck
around in ice hockey. As a dad, I know it’s important to keep the kids busy and active, having fun and learning new things.” An initial seven-week session was held this past summer, with 23 young players getting introduced to the game. The group met weekly on Thursday nights for an hour, and after learning the basics early on, evenings were split equally between drills and scrimmage games. “They’re only five to seven years old, so there’s a fair amount of stopping the play, getting them into the right positions and so on, but they were able to catch on quick to the differences in the game,” PO2 Noseworthy said. “That was our first pilot, and we’ve just started another five-week group that will go through September and October, just prior to hockey season starting.” He described the play as fast-paced, with the goal to move the ball as much as possible and get an open man for an easy shot. In the version of the game played with the kids, nets are smaller than usual and they forego goaltenders to further encourage movement around the floor. Protective gear, including full helmets and gloves, is also required for the PSP program, though floorball typically involves less protective gear than hockey. “We don’t want any injuries because It’s definitely a high-tempo sport. If you hold on to the ball too long, somebody’s going to take it from you.” PO2 Noseworthy, a Clearance Diver by day, said he’s been thrilled with the support from PSP to get the program running, and plans are to keep the floorball program going after the 2019 hockey season wraps up. For more information contact Community Recreation Coordinator Matt MacKenzie at Matthew.MacKenzie5@forces.gc.ca. While priority is given to military families, the sessions are open to any children within the age group.

Kevin Ouellette, Banquet Chef for Juno Catering, arranges plates of food for a function.
Juno Catering dishes up the goods BY VIRGINIA BEATON, TRIDENT STAFF
Napoleon once said that an army marches on its stomach. Change army to Navy, and you will have a pretty good idea of the important role that appetizing, high quality food has to military personnel. Juno Catering, based in Juno Tower at Stadacona, is a Non-Public Funds entity that provides a variety of catering services ranging from breakfasts and lunches, to coffee, tea, fruit or cookie trays for morning coffee breaks, to evening receptions and formal dinners with buffet or plated service. Juno Catering was officially separated from public, and established as a Non-Public Funds entity on April 1, 2017.
From her office in S-90, Halifax Officers’ Mess manager and Juno Catering manager Caitlin Zwicker oversees the Juno Catering team. “Many of the team members have been around here for a long time and they’re a tight-knit group,” says Zwicker. One of the team members is Kevin Ouellette, Juno Catering’s Banquet Chef. “I’ve been here for 17 years,” says Ouellette. As Banquet Chef, Ouellette deals with things like scheduling and food costing, as well as food preparation and cooking. There are also two cook supervisors, cooks, and approximately 10 servers who often are employed on a casual basis.
At this point, most of the events that Juno Catering is doing are hosted from the various messes including the Wardroom, the Chiefs’ and Petty Officers’ Mess, Royal Artillery Park, Tribute Tower, and the messes at 12 Wing Shearwater. There are two separate menus: one for private events and one for mess functions. Functions range from wedding receptions to retirement parties. “We also do a lot of Depart with Dignity functions,” says Zwicker. “The Bridge [in Juno Tower] is a really popular area for those events.” But she notes that by far their busiest night of the year is New Year’s Eve. “That sells out every year, both for the Wardroom and the Chiefs’ and PO’s mess. It averages about 200 people, for each side. So Kevin and the team are catering for about PSP ACTIVITY GUIDE – 2020 | 39
400 people, give or take, on New Year’s Eve. It usually sells out in November.” Add to that Mother’s Day and Father’s day brunches, Welfare Wednesday, weepers, TGIFs, gratis growlies, and it’s a demanding schedule that keeps the catering team busy. When Zwicker joined the team in 2017 after the catering cell had been officially stood up, revamping the menus became a priority. The menu that was being used was from 2014, “so it was outdated, “ she recalls. “Kevin was very involved with that. He had a lot of great, fresh ideas for new menu items.” CPL DAVID VELDMAN, FIS
The menu items and prices recently were updated again to include new or enhanced menu items, including, for example “a pork chop with a smoked gorgonzola demi-glaze. It’s delicious,” Zwicker observes. Juno Catering’s diverse menu package ranges from full breakfast and lunch selections, to receptions and elegant full course dinner menus of steak, fish, chicken, or turkey, plus appetizers, assorted vegetables, side dishes, and dessert.
ABOVE: Juno Catering staff serve up food at the 2019 CFB Halifax Sports Recognition Breakfast.
Custom menus also are available upon consultation with the Chef, and special requirements such as gluten-free, vegetarian or vegan options can be accommodated, though a price adjustment may apply.
LEFT: Fresh meats are sliced for use in sandwiches.
Another recent change that was made, is that Juno Catering will do price matching for take-out trays such as pepperoni and cheese trays. “We try to keep up with food trends,” says Zwicker. What with the proliferation of food shows on TV, “People have more access to that and they are more into different kinds of food now.”
RYAN MELANSON, TRIDENT STAFF
Juno Catering has provided meals for high profile events such as Personnel Support Programs’ annual Sports Recognition Breakfast, held to honour CAF athletes, teams, coaches and officials; and Memorial Cup Events such as the kick-off reception, closing reception, and the players’ dinner at Tribute Tower. “The Memorial Cup events kept us very busy,” according to Zwicker. Future plans include expanding Juno Catering’s current business model, as well as sustaining current operations. Juno Catering’s success has been possible because of the hard work and dedication of the team, Zwicker emphasizes.
