CONCIERGE Q & A Trevor MacRae is an executive host at Casino Nova Scotia. He graduated from Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Arts and is a professional affiliate with Les Clefs d’Or Canada. What spot do you recommend for a lively evening out with friends? Battery Park (page 60), in the heart of downtown Dartmouth, is a craft-beer lover’s paradise! This beercentric Ochterloney Street eatery has 13 rotating East Coast beers on tap. Plus local cider, wine, and spirits. This 55-seat space has an amazing atmosphere and delicious food—share plates, drink beer, and socialize with friends.

What’s the best thing about September in Halifax? The best thing about September would have to be the Festival of Wines (page 21). This five-day event is held annually at the end of September, this year from September 26 to 30. There is a multitude of events that occur over those five days including food and wine dinners at local restaurants, the festival of wines gala dinner, the festival grand tastings and so much more! If you enjoy wine this festival is a must. You will have an opportunity to sample over 300 wines at this year’s grand tastings.

If you only had one day in Halifax, how would you spend it? I’d begin by going to the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site (page EC3). It gives visitors the opportunity to explore a piece of Halifax’s military history. Explore the fortress from inside and out on your own or join one of the many tours. I recommend signing up to “Become a Soldier for a Day.” After exploring Citadel Hill, I would take a tour on the Harbour Hopper (page 70). This guided tour allows you to view many places of interest and learn about some of Halifax’s colourful past. A day wouldn’t be complete without walking along Halifax’s beautiful waterfront and stopping in to the Stubborn Goat Beer Garden (page 61) to sample some locally made beverages and food while taking in a beautiful harbour view.

What do you suggest for a unique Halifax gift to take home? For an authentic and delicious Nova Scotian souvenir, visit Rum Runners Rum Cake Factory

(page 53) on the historic Halifax waterfront in Bishop’s Landing. Rum Runners has preserved an original, traditional rum cake recipe from the 1920s, which was created by the wife of a Cape Breton rum runner. This truly Nova Scotian delicacy consists of a cake topped with pecans and coconut, and soaked with sweet rum or whisky bottled at Glenora Distilleries on Cape Breton Island.

What’s the most common misconception visitors have about Halifax? A common misconception is that Halifax is a small, underdeveloped city with not much to do. Halifax is a beautiful vibrant city that has been growing steadily; there is an amazing music scene here which allows you can see live bands every night of the week. The city has some of the top-rated restaurants in the country from The Highwayman on Barrington Street to The Bicycle Thief (page 63) at in Bishop’s Landing. There are also some amazing buildings like the new Discovery Centre (page EC9) and the award-winning new Halifax Central Library (page EC1) and the Nova Centre, a soon-opening convention centre, boutique hotel, and business tower.

What spot do you recommend for a lazy weekend brunch? The Ardmore Tea Room is one of my, and many Haligonians, favourite spots. People flock here on weekdays and weekends alike. Located at 6499 Quinpool Road, the Ardmore has a cozy atmosphere and the food is cheap and delicious. You must have a milkshake—they’re to die for! SEPTEMBER 2017

SHARING OUR STORIES

Halifax’s film festival gives local film talent an international stage BY TREVOR J. ADAMS

An eight-day celebration of film, music, and media from around the world, FIN: Atlantic International Film Festival (page 22) showcases local, national, and international talents. Running from September 14 to 21, the festival takes over the Cineplex Theatres (page 22) location at Park Lane (page 57) on Spring Garden Road for screenings and special events aplenty. “We’ve crafted another unbeatable program that includes the hottest films of the fall, featuring serious star power, celebrated international filmmakers, and a lot of awards buzz,” says a media release from organizers. As usual, local talent and stories are centre stage. This year’s East Coast highlights include The Child Remains, written and directed by Michael Melski, starring Allan Hawco, and Suzanne Clément. The supernatural thriller tells the story of an expectant couple who spend a terrifying weekend at a haunted country inn that was once a notorious maternity home. It was filmed here in Nova Scotia. 18

where.ca SEPTEMBER 2017

Also on the lineup is The Crescent, by filmmaker Seth Smith (also of the band Dog Day). “The Crescent is an elevated horror that blends formalist, fictional drama with documentarylike moments of realism–think cult classics like Rosemary’s Baby, Phenomena, Don’t Look Now, and contemporary arthouse-thrillers like Under the Skin, The Witch, and Personal Shopper,” explained Smith in a crowd-funding appeal. “The story follows a fractured family. After the death of her husband, Beth, with her toddler son Lowen in tow, retreats to the comfort of a family seaside cottage... As mother and son attempt to rebuild their lives, the residents of Crescent Beach make their presence known.”

Fans will also be eagerly watching for Black Cop, written and directed by Cory Bowles. Although Bowles his best known for his work on Trailer Park Boys, this serious and thoughtful film shows his range of talent. “Black Cop stems from a simple question,” he said on his website recently. “What if a black cop, frustrated about the current stigma surrounding law enforcement, is driven to take action by doing what he believes is the direct repose to the social media judge and jury, giving them something else to weigh in on? The problem is this man lives on the edge of the coin, and each side has troubling consequences.” This year, the festival marks Canada’s 150th birthday with two gala screenings. The Opening Night Gala runs SUZANNE CLÉMENT in association with Movie Nights Across Canada, a nation-wide initiative that has been bringing screenings of Canadian features across the country throughout the year. Following that is the Tuesday Night Gala, presenting the top 10 short-film finalists from the recent “From Away” film competition. Organizers challenged filmmakers to interpret the nation that surrounds them, exploring how immigration has shaped their place within it and connecting audiences with Canada’s past and present. Another highlight is Canada On Screen. Last year, a list of 150 essential moving-image works from Canada’s history was compiled through a national poll of industry professionals. This series screens a selection of those films. I
