Visit our Glassworks on the Halifax waterfront for a rare opportunity to witness the practice of an ancient craft. Molten crystal, pulled from a fiery 1300 ºC pot, is shaped, cut and polished into pieces of exquisite beauty. It’s the only place on the continent you can see such a show.

What’s your pick for September’s can’t-miss event in Halifax? September is always an exciting time in Halifax and a great time to visit! The Atlantic Fringe Festival (page 24), September 1 to 11, takes place in a variety of very unique spots around the City and features some marvelous comedians and other performers. Now in its 26th year!
What are Halifax’s must-visit sites for history buffs? History buffs can spend hours at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic (page EC7) on Lower Water Street, learning about the Halifax Explosion and Halifax’s close ties to the Titanic disaster. The Old Burying Ground (page EC4) at the corner of Spring Garden Road and Barrington Street is
also a captivating visual history of the people of Halifax, the oldest gravestone dating from 1752. I also always recommend a visit to York Redoubt (page EC5), situated on a bluff overlooking the entrance to Halifax Harbour, a National Historic Site and built in 1793.
What’s a good lunch spot for visitors who want to experience unique local cuisine? Chef Craig Flinn, a big supporter of our local food movement, owns 2 Doors Down (page 64) on Barrington Street. He serves an excellent casual lunch menu, full of our freshest Nova Scotian products. Flinn also owns Chives Canadian Bistro (page 61) and Temple Bar, all side by side on the same block.

Take a distillery tour and learn about the entire process of rum making. And be sure to stop by the tasting bar, too. • North Brewing Company (page 54) on Agricola Street specializes in Old World-inspired craft beer. LEBANESE LOVE
• Ray’s Original Lebanese Cuisine (page 66) has been a Halifax fixture since 1980. Today Ray’s is in Bayers Lake, and well worth the trip. This joint is known for its chicken shawarma, but don’t miss the crispy fatoush and tabouli salads. • For Lebanese lunches closer to downtown, try Chef Abod Café (page 66) on Kempt Road. Run by an Egyptian-Canadian who has cooked for a Saudi prince, the cuisine here is always authentic. Try the kibbeh lebaniah (ground beef and bulgur balls afloat in a tangy yogurt sauce).
• Halifax is known for its fine fall weather, so there are still a few weeks to hit a patio. Your Father’s Moustache (page 68) has one of the city’s only rooftop patios. In addition to its COASTAL CAFÉ bustling vibe, this stalwart spot also boasts 17 draft taps, three of which are house-made. • The Stubborn Goat Beer Garden (page 59) on the waterfront presents a stunning vista of the harbour and Dartmouth’s shoreline. This month, the Atlantic Film Festival (page 24) marks 35 years of championing the best in moviemaking. The Atlantic Film Festival is a celebration of film, media, and music from around the world. From September 15 to 22, Halifax will be abuzz with filmmakers, industry insiders, and cinephiles.
In focus The Atlantic Film Festival teams up local talents and international stars BY TREVOR J. ADAMS
“This year’s Atlantic Canadian productions feature many well established filmmakers alongside new voices, with stories that will entertain and inspire the Festival’s audience,” says Jason Beaudry, program director. “The breadth and depth of this year’s program is phenomenal and each and every film on offer is world class.” The festival begins on September 15 with the Opening Night Red Carpet Gala at the Dalhousie Arts Centre on University Avenue. Maudie, based on the life of Nova Scotia folk artist, Maud Lewis, opens the festival. Directed by Aisling Walsh (Song for a Raggy Boy) and written by Sherry White (Crackie, Relative Happiness), Maudie features performances from Academy Award nominees Sally Hawkins (Happy-Go-Lucky, Blue Jasmine) and Ethan Hawke (Training Day, Boyhood). “I cannot think of a better place to celebrate Maud Lewis’ life and work,” says director Aisling Walsh. “Nova Scotia is where Maud Lewis’ story lives and breathes. It is where she is from. Halifax is particularly special for me as The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia is where I started my journey on this film. I remember being so moved standing in front of Maud’s painted house for the first time.” After opening night, the action moves to the Cineplex Theatres (page 24) Oxford Street location. “The Oxford,” as locals know the theatre, is an old-fashion single-screen theatre and a mecca for local movie lovers. On Friday night, it hosts the Atlantic Canadian premier of Weirdos, written by Daniel MacIvor. The coming-of-age-tale is set in Nova Scotia in the mid-1970s. Offering a first-look at the best international films of the festival season, the Atlantic Film Festival is a champion of local filmmakers, committed to helping them build international audiences. Organizers aim to attract some of the biggest players in film, media, and music from around the world. A not-for-profit organization,

the festival has strong ties to the surrounding and thriving arts community. Local talent gets a special focus this year, as the Atlantic Film Festival’s Wednesday Night Gala features an East Coast production. In Perfume War, director Michael Melski crafts an inspiring documentary film about Barb Stegemann, a single mom who creates an unlikely weapon in the fight for world peace. Once again, Halifax’s vibrant live-music scene plays a large part in the Festival. This year’s Festival Music House runs on September 17, with a lineup that includes Paper Lions, Amelia Curran, and acclaimed singer/songwriter Joel Plaskett. The Strategic Partners Co-Production Market returns for industry insiders. It celebrates 19 years of bringing local film-making talents together with their international counterparts. This year, it focuses on the Nordic region and the U.S.A.
