Let‘s Deck the Halls
'Tis the season to soak in the Bajan festive spirit, as we look at the enchanting places in Barbados adorned with the magical moniker "Hall." While our island may not be blanketed in snow, the warmth of the Barbadian holiday season is unparalleled, filled with vibrant colors, rich cultural traditions, and a sense of community that resonates through every Hall. In the heart of Barbados, the name "Hall" carries more than a historical echo; it's a testament to the island's diverse roots, with connections to noble lineages dating back to the 11th century in England and Scotland.
The British settlers brought this heritage to our shores in 1627, and since then, the surname Hall has woven its way into the very fabric of Barbadian history. As we explore the significance of Hall in Barbados, one cannot overlook the intriguing array of districts and landmarks bearing this name. From the cozy charm of Bank Hall and Boarded Hall to the grandeur of Graeme Hall and the architectural wonders of Arch Hall and Drax Hall, each place exudes its distinct character. Even the roads, such as Halls Road, and the natural treasures of Bush Hall, showcase the island's diversity. Among the illustrious Hall names, some stories resonate through time. Winston Hall, a figure who eluded capture for over five years, inspired
the infectious calypso "Can’t Find My Brother" by Red Plastic Bag. Such tales add a layer of intrigue to the already vibrant mosaic of Barbadian history. We invite you to don your Santa hat this Christmas season and take a festive journey across the island. Each locale plays a pivotal role as a central gathering place, from Turners Hall to Harmony Hall, Spring Hall to Eagle Hall, especially during the Yuletide festivities. So, as we "Deck the Halls" of Barbados, let the spirit of merriment guide you through the charming villages, historic estates,
and architectural marvels that bear the name Hall. The joyous celebrations await, making this Bajan Christmas truly special and unforgettable! Bank Hall Bush Hall Boarded Hall Rock Hall Eagle Hall Haaggatt Hall Graeme Hall Vauxhall Checker Hall Welchman Hall Arch Hall

NAVIGATING THE HOLIDAYS: TIPS ON AVOIDING THE HOLIDAY GRINCH The holiday season is a time for joy and togetherness, but for some, spending time with certain family or friends who get on their nerves can feel stressful. Understanding why one feels irritation when seeing these people is key to getting through the holidays in one piece. Let's explore some personalities and scenarios that may make one wish to avoid others during the Christmas festivities.
Do not panic! With a little strategy and knowing when to bite your tongue, you can navigate these potentially frustrating scenarios while still enjoying yourself.
‘De Overbearing Auntie’ There's always that one relative, usually an aunt, who can't resist giving her opinion on everything. Whether telling you what to do with your life, your partner, or even how to cook the rice and peas, her constant interference ratchets up your annoyance when you just want to enjoy a nice holiday lime. ‘De Competitive Cousin’ For some, Christmas is when family rivalry reaches a fever pitch. Whether boasting about who has the cleanest house, scored the best gift, or earned the most last year, that one cousin always trying to outdo everybody and turn what should be a nice vibe into World War Three. ‘De Ex Who Still Hanging Around’ Having one's ex at the family party is a pain in your butt! Unresolved feelings, lingering irritation, or just
the weirdness of being cordial when you don't want to see them, could make getting through Christmas together stressful. ‘De Frenemy’ We all have that one friend who is two-faced. They compliment you to your face but gossip or make snide remarks behind your back. At a holiday gathering with the frenemy, there tend to be two hours of forced smiles and sideeyes. ‘De Judgmental Mother-In-Law’ In-laws sometimes bring a unique vibe to the family Christmas party. The judgmental mother-in-law, ‘eyeing up’ your every move, taking note of what you cooked, who you talk to, and waiting for any slip up to start a lecture, making you feel like you're on probation in your own family.
Do not panic! With a little strategy and knowing when to bite your tongue, you can navigate these potentially frustrating scenarios while still enjoying yourself. Strategic Seating Choice: One good technique is to choose your seat strategically. Sit near those relatives who don't irritate you too much but have an easy escape route from the real troublemakers. Thoughtful seating creates a nice buffer. Arrive Early or Late: If possible, come to the party early before the real pesky family shows up or slip in late after the worst offenders have left. By timing one's arrival and exit wisely, awkward interactions can be minimized. Keep Yourself Busy: Stay occupied by helping out with the children's activities, refreshing the food platters, or mingling from conversation to conversation. Keeping busy provides an excuse if someone you are avoiding approaches asking nosy questions. About 1 billion people live
in deserts. these Draw Your LineMany in theofSand a.k.a people rely on customs Set Your Boundaries: Don't afraid to tell family or that be have been around friends if they encroach on your for hundreds of years to boundaries. Let them know makebut their lives easy politely firmly thatasyou do not wish to interact much right now as possible. and would prefer some personal space. Most people will back off once you establish your ground rules. Have an Exit Plan: Always have a backup plan in case things get awkward. Have a trusted family member or friend who can call you to manufacture an excuse to leave early. Or you could plan another event the next day that necessitates ducking out of this one early.
Focus on the Positive Vibes: Instead of paying attention to the family members who annoy you, focus on those relatives you enjoy. Surround yourself with the positive vibes of good food, music, singing, dancing, and games. Keeping one's mindset upbeat leads to having fun regardless of a few unpleasant individuals lurking about. Remember, during the holiday season, one's happiness and peace of mind must come first, even before family obligations. Staying relatively stress-free and enjoying oneself is what this time of year is really about. Just apply some of these handy tips and you'll be getting through the Christmas social events quite smoothly. CHRISTMAS EDITION 17 ADVOMAG.COM
DERELICTION OF DUTY: UNDERSTANDING ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION Just so we are in the same library; Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is defined as the inability of the penis to respond to sexual stimuli to achieve sufficient rigidity either to begin or complete the act of intercourse. This event may be transient or a chronic indictment going forward. But in either case, ED can be the source of significant relationship anguish and loss of male confidence each time it occurs.
To ensure we’re reading from the same book, the penis becomes rigid from a combination of delicate nervous (parasympathetic) and vascular actions which allows blood to enter and become trapped in the two corpus cavernosum chambers on either side of the organ. The purpose of this article is to appreciate the possible causes of ED and to offer some traditional and nontraditional solutions for the problem. Let us start at the lowest level where ED might be transitory and mentally reversible. If the male is in an emotionally anxious frame of mind, either from fright, guilt, or tension. His sympathetic nervous state, the one which calls for aggression or retreat, may dominate over his parasympathetic pathways and the correct message is ‘blocked’ at the level of the external pudendal (penis) arteries.
Merely being on certain types of prescribed medication can usher in the start of ED. Likely candidates are hypertensive and anti-depressive medications. Administrative Staff: Marsha Alleyne, Stephanie Catling -Birmingham, Marcia Griffith
CHRISTMAS EDITION 19 ADVOMAG.COM
Higher levels of causes that have the potential of a chronic reoccurring ED condition include cardiovascular issues like hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and arteriosclerosis. These two are likely the result of ED becoming more prevalent in the younger male population. But the granddaddy of them all which is responsible for the lion share of the middle aged and senior ED, is from the metabolic damage to small blood vessels in diabetics. Whether you’re a type I or type II diabetic, the pervasive changes to the inner lining of one’s blood vessels (Endothelium) are unforgiving. Smoking and chronic alcohol intake round out the major causes of ED. Just so we are on the same page, the penis will not get and stay erect if there is inadequate engorgement from blood conduits. It is time for the introduction of a most valuable player. A potent but elusive molecule: NITRIC OXIDE. Nitric Oxide is an immediate and effective vasodilator. A frequent question asked surrounds the role of testosterone levels in ED. The fact is that while testosterone is necessary for ‘maleness’ and for libido, and yes there is some vasodilation of the arteries involved in erections, it pales in comparison to the effect of Nitric Oxide. Remember earlier we spoke about the parasympathetic nervous involvement. It so happens that the endothelium of the penis vessels respond by releasing Nitric Oxide thus dilating and allowing said engorgement. The solution may seem obvious now; provide more Nitric oxide. Indeed, this solution is the backbone of the mechanism-of-action of the very successful (and expensive) ‘blue pill’ Viagra. The problem is Nitric Oxide is elusive. It’s a flighty gas which does not hang around and it’s made indirectly after a cascade of precursors in the body which are complex. One must induce its release rather than give It directly.
Dr. Derek B Thorpe is a Nuclear Medicine and Functional Medicine Physician with postgraduate degrees from Cornell School of Medicine and the University of Florida. He mentors clients through the ketogenic diet and treats pain and injury through optimization of blood flow.
SOLUTIONS With the groundwork taken care of, we can advance to some simple and more esoteric solutions to ED. As a general guideline, solutions emerge when the offending agent/condition is removed. If ED is a result of psychogenic causes, allow your partner to be involved in diffusing your anxiety. She may be instrumental in negating the pressure of sexual performance. As ED may be a harbinger of cardiovascular disease itself, your physician is critical in figuring out if hypertension or the medication for said hypertension is the cause of the problem. A change of meds or reverting to being normotensive may be all that’s necessary. Similarly, improving one’s metabolic profile as it relates to diabetes is vital. Weight loss, improved physical fitness, and ceasing to smoke and drink high levels of alcohol are inexpensive and attainable fixes. We introduced Viagra in a prior paragraph. The active ingredient is Sildenafil Citrate. Its cousins, Cialis and Levitra are also effective. These medications have few serious side effects and, in some situations, can have an effective duration of up to 36 hours. The drawbacks include the cost of having to see a physician and the cost of the medication itself especially if you have an active sex life. It’s reasonable to ask if one can increase Nitric Oxide levels by natural dietary methods. The answer is yes. Foods rich in Nitrates like spinach, Bok choi, and beets can help. As an aside, the breakdown of Nitrates begins in the mouth on the tongue. That specific bacteria is sensitive to fluorides in toothpastes and mouthwashes so be informed if you go this route. There are anecdotal reports about the effectiveness of pomegranate juice, watermelon, olive oil, caffeine, and dark chocolate which one can experiment with. For those who are resistant to the previous remedies, there are surgical interventions that a urologist can advise you further. Vacuum devices and penile implants all have their pros and cons. Prostaglandin injections directly into the penis have the effect of vasodilation also, but this is clearly not for everyone. There are two more interventions utilizing modern devices that have the possibility of a long-term solution. The first is known as penile low-intensity focused shockwave therapy. A device using sound waves intended to break up vascular obstructions leading to the penis. The drawback of this therapy is that it takes some weeks before results are seen. The second uses Electromagnetic waves in combination with redlight therapy. This painless procedure might require multiple applications, but it achieves the essentials for robust erections; release of Nitric Oxide from the Endothelium and increased vascular perfusion. All is certainly not lost when it comes to failing to meet the moment of intimacy. The key is understanding the origin of one’s issue and addressing the source.
