A message from the Principal

St. Vincent’s seeks to provide a quality Catholic learning environment reflecting the Mercy Qualities so that its students are faith-filled and prepared to make a difference. We aspire to be a community, which truly reflects the vision of God’s love for all. We value family and community engagement as we grow and nurture a connected community. Proud and True is the St Vincent’s Business Directory and it’s a great initiative that we launch here in its inaugural edition. Proud & True allows our families and our community access to key information to support the school year and a variety of businesses within the St Vincent’s school community. The businesses advertising in Proud & True are either families in the school or they are businesses who have a strong connection to St Vincent’s. Our intention is that all families are able to confidently use these businesses, trusting that they will be cared for and looked after. My sincere thank you to all the St Vincent’s families and businesses who have advertised in our very own publication. I would like to acknowledge the professionalism, the efficiency and the creativity Amy Sherburd (our PLL) and of Ben Ryan and the ADV Collab Team, who have delivered the inaugural Proud & True Business Directory. Kind regards,

David Sewell

Vision & Mission

Our Catholic parish school community at Clear Island Waters honours its founding influences, the Sisters of Mercy, the Venerable Catherine McAuley, St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, St Vincent de Paul and Father Neal Shannon. Our shared belief in Jesus Christ inspires our vision to make a lasting and positive difference to all. St Vincent’s School acknowledges the traditional owners and custodians of the Yugambeh language region; the land on which we work and learn, paying respect to their Elders: past, present and emerging. The school values our shared stories and well-resourced learning environment, as a safe place in which to learn and develop. We are enriched by the contribution of our past and present school community. We strive to share our gifts and talents and reach out to others.

St Vincent’s Values/ Mercy Qualities

At St. Vincent’s School we draw on the richness of our Mercy heritage. Our school motto, Misericordia, means mercy. Mercy is God’s compassion; God’s loving kindness reaching out to all. Mercy is love in action. Misericordia highlights our historical connection to the spirit of the Mercy Sisters, founded by Catherine McAuley. We recognise St. Vincent de Paul, a priest, after whom our school is named. Vincent lived a life of service. He revolutionised religion by accepting the challenge to witness to his faith. Leading others he returned to the basics Jesus taught; feeding the hungry, comforting the afflicted, nursing the sick, caring for children and the elderly.

At St. Vincent’s we strive to live our everyday lives according to the Mercy Qualities. Together, staff, children and parents endeavour to build and maintain a community which values quality relationships and where we each strive to be more like Jesus. The Mercy Qualities Program seeks to further develop our children as well-rounded community members who are challenged to live the gospel of Jesus Christ every day.

We acknowledge that our school covenant guides our daily actions. Together our community is called to contribute to the shared stories and vibrant memories of St. Vincent’s School. Our covenant, together with the attributes of our religious patrons, Vincent and Catherine provides us with our Mercy Qualities: • • • •

Care and Responsibility Justice and Service Spirituality and Faith Excellence and Optimism

"The simplest and most practical lesson I know is to resolve to be good today but better tomorrow." - Catherine McAuley

Our Founders & House Colours Mackillop – Blue

At St. Vincent’s, we celebrate the life of St. Mary of the Cross Mackillop. Mackillop House, (blue) is named after Mary Mackillop who was canonised as Australia's first saint in February 2010. She was the founder of the Sisters of St. Joseph. Her life was dedicated to giving quality education to children, especially those who were poor, sick and homeless. Mary was a courageous, determined, generous woman whose vision has helped millions of people through the work of the Sisters of St. Joseph.

Vincent - Green

At St. Vincent’s, we celebrate the life of St. Vincent de Paul. Vincent House, (green) is named after Vincent de Paul, a priest who dedicated his whole life to the service of the poor. Like Jesus, Vincent went to people who were not welcome in their society. He fed the hungry, comforted the afflicted, nursed the sick, cared for children and for the aged, visited the imprisoned and buried the dead. St. Vincent founded the Vincentian Fathers and the Daughters of Charity whose work continues his service to the poor and the marginalised. The St. Vincent de Paul Society founded by Frederic Ozanam also strives to live out the vision of St. Vincent de Paul.

McAuley - Red

At St. Vincent’s, we celebrate the life of the venerable Catherine McAuley. McAuley House, (red) is named after Catherine McAuley who founded the order of the Sisters of Mercy. The Sisters of Mercy taught at St. Vincent’s from its beginning in 1948. Catherine wanted her sisters to be like Jesus: compassionate, humble and sincere, friendly and affectionate, sensitive to the needs of others, simple yet courageous. Mercy is God’s compassion, God’s loving kindness reaching out to us when we suffer spiritual and material poverty. Misericordia; Mercy is God’s love, in action.

Shannon - Yellow

At St. Vincent’s, we celebrate the life of Fr Neal Shannon. Shannon House, (yellow) is named after Fr. Shannon who was the first parish priest in the Surfers Paradise Parish. Fr. Shannon had a burning desire to educate the whole person in the best possible surroundings. He was caring and compassionate and possessed a great sense of humour. He co-ordinated the building of the brick church and school in 1948 and oversaw the further development of the site. He dedicated St. Vincent’s to the memory of those who served our country in various wars.

Our History

St Vincent’s Primary School has seen enormous growth since its establishment in Surfers Paradise in 1948. From its humble beginnings as a single storey building with an enrolment of 30 students it is now the second largest Catholic School in the Archdiocese of Brisbane. Many dedicated and passionate people have contributed to the development of our vibrant and flourishing community. In 1946, Fr Neal Shannon was appointed the first Parish Priest of the newly formed Surfers Paradise Parish. The small wooden church, opened in 1948, where the Watermark Hotel now stands. It held 60 parishioners and provided classrooms for a much needed parish school. Today, Sacred Heart Church seats approximately 1000 parishioners. The Sisters of Mercy were appointed to administer and service the educational and spiritual needs of the children of the parish and Sr. Mary Flora was appointed as the first Principal. The church continued to be used as a school and as enrolments increased to 150, a second storey was built in 1954. An extensive building program was initiated shortly after to satisfy an ever growing school population. A new parish church was built in 1963.

In 1970, another six classrooms were built, followed by two more at a later stage. During this period six Mercy Sisters were appointed as Principals, with Sister St Anthony being the last. The first lay Principal, Mr Brian Dunlea was appointed in 1975. In 1986 Sacred Heart Parish Church and St Vincent’s Primary School were established in Clear Island Waters after Dr Owen Oxenham, the parish priest, initiated the move from Surfers Paradise. A beautiful new school, located in very pleasant surroundings beside a lake, was opened in June with 200 students, and 20 staff. Mr Jim O’Brien was Principal. The involvement of the Mercy Sisters concluded in 1992 with the departure of Sr. Agnes Kearney. However, St Vincent's School proudly continues to honour its founders, the Mercy Sisters and our patron St Vincent de Paul. The school’s growth continued under the leadership of Principals, Mr Paul Allen, Mr Greg Myers, Mrs Kerry Rowlands and Mr David Sewell and today has over 790 students. Our welcoming Catholic community works together to ensure the joy of shared stories and vibrant memories for all.

Positive Behaviour 4 Learning St Vincent’s is a Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) School. PB4L is about people, practices, and processes – it is not a program, but the way that we interact & operate here at St Vincent’s - The Mercy

Way

St. Vincent’s promotes behaviours that align with our Mercy Qualities in order to: • Improve the social behavioural climate. • Support or enhance the impact of academic achievement.

• Increase proactive, positive, preventive management while decreasing reactive management. • Integrating academic and behaviour supports. • Improving services for all students, including students at risk and students with identified disabilities. An important component of PB4L is a continuum of behavioural supports that, like academic instruction, acknowledges that students will need differing levels of behavioural interventions and support to be successful at school.

YOUR WORLD YOUR WAY 39

Mortgage Refinancing Surges As Interest Rates Dive.

Are You Missing Out By Not Refinancing? JASON NAIRN, our finance and lending specialist explains the process of refinancing and explains how refinancing can help save you on your home loan.

0432 918 214

jason@linkedfinancial.com.au

First up, WHAT IS REFINANCING? Refinancing is when you change your existing home loan to a new one. Sometimes this can be simply a new product offering with your current lender or switching to a new lender all together. Refinancing gives you the option to explore securing a better interest rate and the possibility of withdrawing on your home equity.

6 Reasons to Refinance Your Home Loan in 2021 Life’s always changing. Since you bought your home, your family structure, lifestyle or financial situation may be different. There might be another home loan that’s more suited to your life now – and offers you a better deal.

The two main reasons people look to refinance their home loans are either to get a better rate or to increase their existing loan to withdraw some home equity. You can refinance your home loan from any bank or lender you choose, and it doesn’t necessarily need to be your existing lender. These days banks do not reward loyalty, and in most cases we find lenders offer better deals to new customers rather than rewarding their existing ones. Aside from this, what are some reasons for refinancing? It is going to come down to your personal situation, your short to medium term goals, and while people have a wide range of reasons here are the most common ones we see. 40

1

You Want a Lower Interest Rate Refinancing for a lower interest rate could not only save you money - it could also help you pay off your home loan sooner. It means your repayments might be lower every month, which means more money in your pocket. Or, if you use some of that saved money to continue making larger repayments, you might pay your mortgage off faster and save on total interest paid. You hear a lot about interest rates and the RBA in the news, but every lender uses many different measures to set their rates. That’s why it’s important to speak to a mortgage broker to understand what rates you can access.

2

You're Renovating If you’re in Queensland particularly, you may have heard that the coronavirus pandemic hasn’t impacted house prices as originally feared. In fact, many Queensland housing prices have increased. If your property is one of the lucky ones to see an increase you may have more equity in your loan to borrow against. This could give you the opportunity to borrow some extra funds to do those renovations you’ve always wanted. Lenders also like to give better interest rates to homes with increased equity.

3

Your Fixed Rate on Your Loan has Expired It is very common in Australia to have a fixed rate term of between 1 to 5 years. When your fixed rate finishes at the end of that 1 to 5 year period (or expires in bank talk) your loan will change back to a variable rate – and in most cases the bank’s standard variable rate which doesn’t have any discounts! You can avoid this by switching to another fixed rate, or looking at your refinance options to maximise your interest rate discount.

4

You Want to Consolidate your Other Loans and Debts Finally, refinancing gives you the chance to bundle all of your other loans together into a single debt under a smaller interest rate. This can be handy in situations where you have highinterest rate loans and debts like credit cards, personal loans or car loans. A debt consolidation home loan Refinance works in a similar way to a cash-out refinance, where an increased portion of the loan can be used to pay out other loans and debts. Your old home loan will be replaced by a new one that includes the amount you used to pay out those other debts.

5

Your Property has Increased in Value Broadly speaking, property prices in Australia have increased over the past 5-7 years. If your property’s value has gotten a boost, you might be able to refinance and get a better rate. These days banks give better interest rates to borrowers with more equity.

money at a lower cost. You may want to invest these funds into shares, or use as a deposit of a new investment property.
