N
o, the sign on the store is not a typo. It is really spelled S.H.U.E.S., and it stands for Stylish, Honest, Unique, Empowering, Stunning. In other words, according to store owner Chelsea Tracy, “It’s what every woman is.” What started as a whim has quickly become a high-traffic spot for downtown shoppers. Chelsea and her team opened this store in five days, which included a significant remodel. It helped that she’s had plenty of retail experience already, operating Chelsea’s Boutique just four doors up the block on Phillips Avenue. When she heard that the Lot 2029 store was going to move from their storefront near the corner of 12th & Phillips, her first thoughts went to what might go in there and hoping it would be something positive that would continue to bolster her side of the block. Then, came the idea – a shoe store. “Downtown areas like ours are being revitalized all over the country,” says Chelsea, “and downtown Sioux Falls has really

exploded in recent years with a wonderful assortment of retail, dining, nightlife and more. But one thing that wasn’t here was a shoe store.” The stars began to align. She and her husband (and business partner) Colin rented the building. Her clothing store, Chelsea’s Boutique, carried a line of shoes, so she already had connections to vendors. It was November, meaning they were going to get busy with holiday shoppers. “We had five days to get open, and I’m like, ‘Can we really do this?’” she laughs. “So, then we were like, ‘Let’s do it. Let’s just do it!’”

She still has a small shoe section at Chelsea’s Boutique, and there are some clothing and accessory items at S.H.U.E.S. But, there are plenty of unique things at each store to draw customers into both shops. The one thing that is definitely constant, though, is the comfortable décor, the friendly staff and personal attention to help each person find that just-right thing. At S.H.U.E.S., the spacious location provides for plenty of room in the front half for the retail sales and storage in the back to
accommodate the extra inventory needed for their growing online presence. “Our store inventory and online inventory are the same,” she says, “so what you see online will be in the store. We have lots of customers who will pre-shop online and come in with pictures on their phones knowing exactly what they are looking for.” As a personal stylist herself, and with a small but mighty team dedicated to ensuring their customers look and feel their best, Chelsea says they are always ready to help those who may not be so sure of what they’re looking for, too. “We love spending time getting to know our customers,” says

Their goal was to provide a wide array of styles, offer a personal boutique feel, but at affordable prices.

“Most of our shoes are between $30 and $70,” she says. While there is still snow on the ground and S.H.U.E.S. is working hard to keep up with the demand of all styles of boots and booties, Chelsea is looking forward to her first visit to Las Vegas for market. “It’s going to be fun thinking about spring!” It’s not all boots and gloves at S.H.U.E.S. right now, though.
A colorful table in the front window features an assortment of heels…from feisty red to animal print. Customer feedback is important to S.H.U.E.S. and to its sister store, Chelsea’s Boutique. Both outlets use social media to solicit customer feedback with posts about new arrivals or questions and pictures asking, “Should we get this or that?” “It makes our customers feel like they are really part of the store.”
Two stores, active social media, blogging, supporting local causes, dreaming about future expansion, and a just-over-yearold-marriage. How does Chelsea do it? “I don’t stay still very long,” she laughs. “But I love every minute of it. There’s nothing like the feeling you get when you help another person feel empowered and seeing in themselves all that is unique and special.”

E
mily Roberts has been in Sioux Falls for 9 years and bought her first house, a townhome, three years ago. A new development had popped up in southeast Sioux Falls, and Roberts toured a model home. “I just got this warm, fuzzy feeling,” she says, “and it felt right.” It would be another three months before her home was completed, which gave her plenty of time to review all the options for woodwork, paint colors and other choices to personalize the design and make it her own. “I loved the flexibility of being able to use options that the builders had, as well as to go out to other stores in town. For example, I worked with Carpet One on my tile flooring, backsplash tile and carpeting, and appreciated their trendy recommendations as well as how well they worked with my builder. I would just carry little swatches of everything wherever I went.” The space is perfect for Roberts and her roommate, Lukie, a

friendly Maltipoo (Maltese Poodle mix). The two-level townhome has an open living room, dining room and kitchen on the main floor and two bedrooms and open space that is adaptable for many uses. Roberts, who is a physician assistant working with high risk pregnancies, placed a desk in the space and a unique ladder bookcase filled with medical books, special pictures and other
mementos. She can work at the desk and look out the windows below while Lukie can also perch nearby and keep a protective eye on things. At first, Roberts says, she wasn’t sure what to do about decorating from a blank page. “This was a challenge,” she admits. “I have trouble imagining

trying to do it for a larger house.” Fortunately, she was acquainted with a friend-of-a-friend who is in the interior design business. “He gave me a really great pointer. He said that for each room, just pick one focal point, and then design around that. In my living room, it was the rug, in my bedroom, the bedding, and in the
bathrooms, the shower curtain.” For her bedding, she chose a pretty crème color, which stands out against the brown walls, and filled the bed with pillows, giving it a little touch of glam and elegance. The patterned shower curtain in the bathroom allowed the opportunity to bring in some accent colors.

Another thing Roberts learned during the process is that you don’t have to break the bank even when you are trying to design your home. “You can find things anywhere – from Kohl’s to Pier 1 – you just choose the things you like, and you can create any kind of style you want.” Her designer friend was a valuable part of her experience. He used his talents in organizing the furniture, hanging all of her artwork, and putting his special touch on each room. “I walked in and had to learn where he had placed everything,” she laughs. “But that was awesome.” An upstairs laundry area is tucked away behind wooden doors between the two bedrooms, which is a great convenience. The colors upstairs and throughout the house are a warm mix of browns and ivory, with accents in greens and turquoise, which go

perfectly with the dark woodwork. The kitchen has ample storage and work space, with a wraparound counter that also provides space for seating with a few tall stools. Open space above the dark cabinets not only provides spots to feature decorative items, but it also creates more height in the space. “The whole place feels bigger than it actually is,” Roberts says. That feeling is enhanced by her north-facing home and many windows that draw in natural light. The living room shades pull up from the bottom and down from the top, so she can adjust them for more light or for privacy. Just off the kitchen is a spacious closet, which also includes the space under the stairs that goes up to the second floor. Adding shelves created the added perk of a walk-in pantry. There is enough room for a separate dining table near sliding

As a busy medical professional, Roberts enjoys the fact that lawn care and snow removal are taken care of as part of the neighborhood association. And, even though it is a full development, she has been surprised at how quiet it is.

Nurturing A RELATIONSHIP BY RICCARDO TARABELSI

This is not the relationship advice column; however, there are more similarities between a relationship and wine than one might think. For the wine collector, there are many key factors to nurturing wine so that it will age gracefully and peak at the right moment. Much like a relationship, wines need love and caring too. Below are the keys to nurturing wine (and your relationship) to make this Valentine’s Day a day to remember.

to wines too. While wines are aging, they like to be kept at cooler temperatures. Heat is Enemy Number One for wine. Temperatures higher than 70° F will age a wine more quickly than is usually desirable. And if it gets too much hotter, your wine may get “cooked,” resulting in flat aromas and flavors. The ideal temperature range is between 55° F and 65° F, though this isn’t an exact science. Don’t fret too much if your storage runs a couple degrees warmer, as long as you’re opening the bottles within a few years from their release.

More important than worrying about achieving a perfect 58°F is avoiding the landmines of rapid, extreme, or frequent temperature swings. On top of cooked flavors, the expansion and contraction of the liquid inside the bottle might push the cork out or cause seepage. Aim for consistency, but don’t get paranoid about minor temperature fluctuations; wines may see worse in transit from the winery to the store. (Even if heat has caused wine to seep out past the cork, that doesn’t always mean the wine is ruined. There’s no way to know until you open it—it could still be delicious.)
Key #3 Turn the Lights Off. Okay, keep calm. We all know what this means in a relationship, but to wine, light, especially sunlight, can pose a potential problem for long-term storage. The sun’s UV rays can degrade and prematurely age wine. One of the reasons why vintners use colored glass bottles? They’re like sunglasses for wine. Light from household bulbs probably won’t damage the wine itself, but can fade your labels in the long run. Incandescent bulbs may be a bit safer than fluorescent bulbs, which do emit very small amounts of ultraviolet light.
Key #4 Don’t Let Them See You Sweat. Remember the butterflies you felt when you were first dating your loved one? Did you ever let them see you sweat? Conventional wisdom says that wines should be stored at an ideal humidity level of 70 percent. The theory goes that dry air will dry out the corks, which would let air into the bottle and spoil the wine. Yes, this does happen, but unless you live in a desert or in arctic conditions, it probably won’t happen to you. Anywhere between 50 percent and 80 percent humidity is considered safe, and placing a pan of water in your storage area can improve conditions. Conversely,

extremely damp conditions can promote mold. This won’t affect a properly sealed wine, but can damage your labels.
Key #5 Sideways. Again, I know what you’re thinking but get your mind out of the gutter! Traditionally, bottles have been stored on their sides in order to keep the liquid up against the cork, which theoretically should keep the cork from drying out. If you’re planning on drinking these bottles in the near- to mid-term, or if the bottles have alternative closures (screw caps, glass, or plastic corks), this is not necessary. I will say this: horizontal racking is a space-efficient way to store your bottles, and it definitely can’t harm your wines.
Key #6 Good Vibrations. No, no, no, don’t even go there! There is nothing good about vibrations when it comes to your wine storage. There are theories that vibration could damage wine in the long term by speeding up the chemical reactions in the liquid. Some serious collectors worry about even the subtle vibrations caused by electronic appliances, though there’s little evidence documenting the impacts of this. Significant vibrations could possibly disturb the sediment in older wines and keep them from settling, potentially making them unpleasantly gritty. Unless you live above a train station or are hosting rock concerts, is this likely to be a problem for your shortterm storage? No.

Key #7 Location. Location. Location. I don’t know how this pertains to love (maybe being in the right place at the right time?) For wine storage, it’s finding a cool, not-too-damp space in the basement that can double as a cellar. Rule out your kitchen, laundry room, or boiler room, where hot temperatures could affect your wines, and look for a location not directly in line with light pouring in from a window. You could also buy a small wine cooler and follow the same guidelines: If you keep your wine fridge in a cool place, it won’t have to work so hard, keeping your energy bill down. Hopefully I’ve been able to give you some vital pieces to the romantic puzzle of your relationship. Probably not; however, I do hope you now have enough information to get started on your wine collection. It’s an exciting adventure that demands attention to detail, a commitment to quality, and a patient soul. Sounds a lot like a relationship to me… Buon Valentino and Carpe Vino!

or years I’ve created playlists on my iPod and iPhone for dinner or while I was working in the kitchen. It’s always fun to use the tunes to set the mood for whatever I’m cooking. The sounds of New Orleans fill the kitchen when I’m cooking spicy Andouille sausage gumbo. And The Gipsy Kings version of Hotel California (in Spanish of course) puts me in the mood to tap into my inner Rick Bayless and create a Mexican fiesta. With Saint Valentine’s Day approaching, I’m putting together a playlist to set the mood from cocktails through dessert. Now keep in mind that my beloved and I have been married for more than twenty-one years, so the mood I’m trying to set is romantic, not the soundtrack to an X-rated film. Keep your minds out of the gutter. When I think about the cocktail hour, my mind always drifts to those swanky days of the Rat Pack. When you picture those guys, there’s always a cocktail in their hands. That music makes you

want to kick back and relax, unwind from the day’s work and slip into a new frame of mind. I’m looking for songs that can get the conversation flowing while not dominating the room. That will set the tone for our evening together. Frank Sinatra songs like “Come Fly With Me” and “I Get a Kick Out of You” are always good, but avoid “My Funny Valentine”. It seems like it would be a sweet love song, but the lyrics are pretty harsh; “Your looks are laughable” are not words that will help you get lucky. Dean Martin’s “That’s Amore” or Mel Torme singing “Coming Home Baby” will get the night swingin’. For dinner, I’ll start with one of my upbeat favorites “New Frontier” by Donald Fagen. It’s got an early sixties vibe and the lyrics tell a tale of a young man wooing a girl. Then, let’s slide into some of my (and my bride’s) favorite love songs. Here are a few that we’ll be playing.

Nick’s Favorite Cherry Cream Cheese Bars 1 can cherry pie filling 8 ounce cream cheese at room temperature 1/2 cup powdered sugar 1 tube crescent rolls 1/4 stick butter 2 tablespoons vanilla 1/4 cup sugar Place half of the crescent rolls in the bottom of an 8x8 inch greased baking pan. Press the seams of the rolls together. Cream the cream cheese until smooth and add vanilla and powdered sugar and spoon onto the rolls in the baking pan. Top with the pie filling and place the other half of the rolls on top. Pour the melted butter over the top and sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 375˚ for 25 minutes or until golden brown.

Tasty Cherry Dessert 1/2 cup graham cracker crumbs 2 tablespoons powdered sugar 2 tablespoons margarine, melted Filling: 4 ounces cream cheese, softened 3/4 cup powdered sugar 1/2 cup whipped topping 1 cup cherry pie filling Combine the graham cracker crumbs, 2 tablespoons powdered sugar and margarine in a bowl and then press into the bottom of a greased 8x4 loaf pan. Beat the cream cheese and 3/4 cup powdered sugar in a small bowl until smooth. Fold in the whipped topping and spread over the graham cracker crust. Top with pie filling and chill for 2 hours. Serves 4-6 and can easily be doubled.

A
lthough her memory of the time is foggy, Steph Klemann recalls a time when she was so malnourished due to anorexia nervosa and bulimia, she had trouble answering basic questions. “I’d start a sentence and then just trail off.” Her eating disorders became so severe that she needed hospitalization. Yet now, at age 30, Steph is proud to say she has recovered with the help of therapy and support from family and friends. She is among an estimated 20 million women and 10 million men who have an eating disorder some time in their life.

An eating disorder can manifest in several ways but often has underlying factors such as depression or anxiety — making the treatment approach multidimensional, explained Mary Dressing, LPC-MH, RD, LN, a registered dietitian and mental health counselor with Avera Medical Group Internal Medicine Women’s.
Common diagnoses include: • Anorexia nervosa: severe diet restrictions and weight loss, overexercising

“Treatment lasts three to seven years, on average, and for some people, recovery is a lifelong process.” Common signs of an eating disorder may include withdrawing from people, becoming extremely picky with foods, avoiding eating around others, obsessing over weight and frequently heading to the restroom after meals. Steph, who lives in Sioux Falls and works as a licensed social worker and caseworker, sought inpatient treatment for her eating disorder at age 21 when her therapist and family decided that she needed more help than an outpatient program could provide. She spent one month in inpatient treatment and four more in a residential living center, before returning to outpatient therapy with Dressing, whom she began seeing at age 18. Steph recalls withdrawing from her friends, severely restricting her eating and exercising excessively. “Your life is just all about your eating disorder,” she said. “Every action I did revolved around food — exercising and doing things to compensate if I did eat or figuring out ways how to not eat.” Eating disorders are often a form of control, so Steph had to effectively retrain her brain. “Once people develop an eating disorder it’s very difficult to solve this on their own,” Dressing said. “It’s so overwhelming. Their thoughts become so distorted.” As a dietitian, Dressing created a meal plan for Steph and helped her develop correct thinking around food. For example, someone with an eating disorder might think by eating a bowl of ice cream, she or he will gain five pounds. Dressing works to correct that misinformation by focusing on the facts — how many calories are in a bowl of ice cream versus the calories it takes to put on a pound of body fat. Beyond retraining thoughts, Dressing also teaches coping mechanisms and works on other related issues whether it might be depression or anxiety. Thankfully, Steph didn’t suffer any long-lasting health effects, which can often include infertility, osteoporosis and heart problems. Married and with a son, she is working to help others by organizing a local support group — a registered group of the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders. “I want to be there for others to say, ‘I’ve been there. You can get to this side. I’ve been there and I made it to this side,’” Steph said.

But what he liked most was “how fast they got me in.” Swift injured himself between Christmas and New Years in New Mexico and drove home. “I went into OI NOW on a Monday and had surgery on Friday of that same week,” said Swift. “They expedited me through the process.”

I
t all started with a health check by the nurse in 5th grade during school. Naomi Richer, now 31, remembers what she was told at that time. “The nurse seemed concerned after she listened to my heart,” she says. “She asked if I had ever been told I had a heart murmur. I told her I hadn’t and that was really the end of the conversation at that time.” The soon-to-be mother of two never remembers feeling any signs that would have indicated a heart condition. She played sports and experienced a typical childhood with no complications.

And during a sports physical in 8th grade, Naomi was again asked if she had a heart murmur. Again, her reply was no. However, this time Naomi was referred to a cardiologist, who ordered an echocardiogram. The test revealed she did, indeed, have a heart murmur. “As the years passed, I continued to feel fine, but would have my condition monitored through a cardiologist at Sanford,” Naomi says. “Everything seemed the same until I was pregnant with my first child, Brian.” In the beginning of 2014, Naomi was referred to Sanford

And it was then that a more definitive diagnosis was made. “Dr. Steffen told me I had subaortic membrane and aortic mitral insufficiency – both of which are defects I was born with,” Naomi says. “Neither were severe enough to require treatment – only routine monitoring.” A subaortic membrane is a narrowing of the heart’s left ventricle just below the aortic valve, which can limit blood flow. And aortic mitral insufficiency occurs when the heart’s aortic valve doesn’t

Naomi, who used to be a cardiology nurse at Sanford, trusted Dr. Steffen and followed her physician’s advice of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. “I tried to stay physically active and exercise at least three to four times a week, and eat a heart-healthy diet,” she says. “Once my son was born, I used a jogger stroller and would run with him. It was a great way to keep active.” Now, Naomi has a happy, healthy 20-month old and is expecting her second baby in July. She continues to see Dr. Steffen for routine heart checks, eat healthy and stay active – and her condition remains under control. “If I begin to have uncontrollable issues with my heart defect, a

valve replacement could be in my future,” Naomi says. “But at this point, it’s not necessary.” Naomi trusts in her faith and the expertise of her heart team at Sanford to give her the best care possible. She lives her life to the fullest, enjoys every moment and looks forward to a happy, healthy future with her friends and family. “I know I’m in good hands – no matter what happens,” she says. “Dr. Steffen is both knowledgeable and caring, which has really helped me a lot. Stained Glass Paper Hearts Materials Needed: 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon vegetable oil, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1 1/2 cups water, wax paper, assorted colors tissue paper, and paint brushes or sponges. Instructions: Mix together the flour, sugar, oil, and water and stir over low heat until smooth. Tape a large piece of waxed paper to your work surface, then brush glue on one half of the waxed paper. Tear or cut the tissue paper into small pieces, then lay the pieces over the glue, overlapping until the surface is covered. Carefully brush a thin layer of glue over the pieces of tissue paper, then fold the other half of the waxed paper over and flatten until smooth. Let it dry completely, and cut into heart shapes. Punch a hole, then tie with a string and hang from your windows for a beautiful stained glass effect.

Celery Rose Materials Needed: 1 stalk of celery, knife, red and green craft paint, white paper, and a paint brush. Instructions: Simply cut the bottom off of a stalk of celery, then brush red paint onto the cut portion of the end. Press down onto a pice of white paper, creating a shape that resembles a rose. Paint green to create the stem and some leafs and thorns, and you have a painted rose.
Fingerprint Love Bugs
Twig Cupid Arrows
Materials Needed: Cupcake liners, construction paper, black paint, glue stick, and scissors.
Materials Needed: Twigs, felt, craft glue, and string.
Instructions: Fold the cupcake liner in half, then cut out a heart. Use your thumb with black paint and carefully press down to make the love bug’s head on the construction paper. Next, glue on the cupcake liner heart shapes to create the body of the bug. Once dry, add some fingerprints on the cupcake liners with black paint, then draw on some antennas.
Instructions: Cut feathers with fringe from pieces of felt, then cut out small triangles to form the arrow tips. Use craft glue to adhere to twigs and form cupid’s arrows. Tie a piece of cute string into a bow just below the feather of the arrow. Bundle these arrows together and tie them in a cute bow. If you don’t want to use twigs, this will work with straws as well. This will make a very unique Valentine for somebody special.

1851 Indian Treaty Falls Park, Sioux Falls
n July 23, 1851, at Traverse des Sioux, near present-day St. Peter, Minnesota, 35 Sisseton and Wahpeton chiefs and headmen signed a treaty that had a profound effect on the future city of Sioux Falls. More than 24 million acres of tribal land, including all land east of the Big Sioux River, was ceded to the federal government and became available for settlement. In 1856 settlers arrived to survey the area, and years later settlers founded the tiny village of Sioux Falls, Minnesota Territory. The treaty granted the tribes annuities, $275,000 cash, and other rights. Unscrupulous traders claimed that they were owed large sums. After the chiefs made their mark on the treaty document, traders persuaded them to pay tribal debts by signing away the cash payment. Starvation, hopelessness, and smoldering resentment over the loss of land and treaty cash erupted into the Dakota Conflict of 1862. Following the slayings of Judge Joseph Amidon and his son William, Sioux Falls City was abandoned. Seven years elapsed before the town site was settled a second time. DEDICATED IN 2002 BY THE MINNEHAHA COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY, CITY OF SIOUX FALLS, MINNEHAHA CENTURY FUND, AND THE SIOUX FALLS AREA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION IN HONOR OF ALEX JOHNSON.
Chief Little Crow
Little Crow was born in 1810 in the Dakota village of Kaposia near present day St. Paul, Minnesota. His father was the village chief. He not only became known as a fearless warrior, but also learned to read and write English. He became chief and speaker for his tribe in 1846. On the night of August 17, 1862, Little Crow was called upon to lead his people in the war that is now known as the Dakota Conflict. He gave the order to clear out settlers all from the Big Sioux River valley, which led to the deaths of Judge Joseph Amidon and his son Willie.
