5 Familiar Faces Are Atop Standings

By jared turner

F

ive races into the 2018 Monster Energy Series season, the top eight drivers in the standings are all drivers who won at least one race last season. Arguably even less surprising is that of the top four drivers in points, three of them — Martin Truex Jr., Kyle Busch and Brad Keselowski — made it to Homestead last season as part of the Championship 4 who competed heads-up for the title in the 2017 season finale. The one championship finalist from last season who is not among the top four in points so far this season? Kevin Harvick — who has won three of the season’s first five races but sits eighth in the standings due to a pair of poor finishes. The bottom line? As much as things change from year to year in NASCAR, they also stay the same. A look at the current standings is living proof of it.

Breakthrough Win Is Proving Difficult For Kyle Busch

ince finishing 25th in the Daytona 500, Kyle Busch has recorded finishes of seventh, second, second and third. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver has also led laps in each of the four races since Daytona, the most coming two weekends ago at ISM Raceway where he spent 128 laps out front. Yet, for whatever reason, Busch has yet to unlock the proverbial door to Victory Lane in 2018. His most recent near-miss came Sunday at Auto Club Speedway where he finished third after leading a total of 62 laps and battling hard with eventual race winner Martin Truex Jr. for the top spot during the race’s final stage. Asked after the race about where Truex was beating him on the track at Fontana, Busch offered a terse explanation. “Everywhere,” the 2015 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion said. “Just thought we auto club rearview: march 19, 2018

3 Kyle Larson Was Almost California Dreamin’

A

fter being consistently one of the top performers of 2017, Kyle Larson had been relatively quiet this season — until Sunday’s run at Auto Club Speedway in his native California, that is. Larson, who returned to his home state as the defending race winner, finished second on a day when he could have easily faltered as a result of two major setbacks — one, an early-race collision with Kevin Harvick not of his own making, and, two, an unscheduled pit stop for a vibration just prior to the start of the final stage. Instead of wilting in the face of adversity, Larson left Southern California with his best result of the season. “It was good to get all the way to second,” said Larson, a native of Elk Grove, California. “All in all, a good day. We fought hard. That’s all you can ask for.”

Even The Big Dogs Mess Up — Just Ask Kevin Harvick

S

eeking to become the first driver since Jimmie Johnson in 2007 to win four consecutive Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series races, Kevin Harvick fell considerably short of that mark at Auto Club Speedway where he finished 35th. Harvick’s unraveling turned out to be his own doing, too. Battling near the front with Kyle Larson in the race’s first stage, Harvick’s No. 4 car bounced off Larson and hard into the outside wall after Harvick appeared to come down the track and initiate the contact. Harvick later shouldered the blame for the accident, which ultimately ruined his day while Larson was able to keep going. “I think that’s my fault for coming down the racetrack right there and trying to side draft. And then as we touched, it just came back up the racetrack,” Harvick said of his car. “I was just trying to get a little too much right there.” auto club rearview: march 19, 2018

Martin Truex Jr. And Team Aren’t Far Removed From 2017 Form

I

t might have taken reigning series champion Martin Truex Jr. five races to secure his first victory of 2018, but rest assured: Truex and his No. 78 Furniture Row Racing team aren’t all that far removed from their dominant 2017 form. The most convincing evidence yet of that came Sunday at Auto Club Speedway, where Truex led 125 of 200 laps and took the checkered flag more than 11 seconds ahead of second-place Kyle Larson. Prior to Fontana, Truex had finished no worse than fifth in his three previous outings. While it’s fair to say that Truex hasn’t been the top performer of 2018 to date (that honor clearly goes to Kevin Harvick, a winner of three of the season’s first five races), Truex is inching pretty darn close to his form from a season ago when he notched a career-high eight victories on the way to the title. auto club rearview: march 19, 2018

I’M JUST SAYIN’ Jimmie Johnson’s No. 48 Chevrolet will not be sponsored by Lowe’s beyond this season. GETTY IMAGES

Jimmie Johnson Losing Lowe’s Doesn’t Bode Well For Sponsorship Climate By Jared Turner

M

any in the NASCAR world were shocked by last week’s bombshell news that, beginning next season, Lowe’s will discontinue its longstanding primary sponsorship of Jimmie Johnson’s No. 48 Chevrolet. The end of this nearly two-decadesold partnership is significant for many reasons, not the least of them being that Johnson still has two more full seasons left on his current contract with Hendrick Motorsports. So, in order for Johnson to fill out the terms of his contract, a major primary sponsor or multiple

smaller primary sponsors must be found. More troubling than the question marks Johnson faces, however, are the implications of this breakup for the sport as it relates to the current sponsorship climate. Although Johnson has been a bit sluggish out of the gate in 2018, it doesn’t change the fact that he’s still a historymaking seven-time Monster Energy Series champion who might even eventually go down as the greatest driver in the history of the sport. The fact that Johnson has to face even the slightest uncertainty about his future is a sad testament to how difficult it is to land — and keep — top sponsors in today’s climate. Johnson, however, doesn’t view his impending sponsor loss as a bad sign for NASCAR’s overall health. “I see our sport growing. I see many new sponsors coming into Hendrick Motorsports,” he said. “I see a returning sponsor coming to NASCAR. I’ve seen full grandstands. It’s been an exciting start to the season. I really don’t feel it has a reflection on the sport. It’s a business decision that Lowe’s needed to make, and that stuff happens.” Give Johnson credit for trying to spin this as positively as possible, but here’s the reality: If Johnson can’t keep Lowe’s on board, no driver and team in 2018 are immune from sponsorship concerns. auto club rearview: march 19, 2018

Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training.

MSG: Making Racing Safer By Dan Guttenplan

M

otorsports Safety Group is a collaboration of innovators in the sport who are determined to improve the safety of racing. MSG shares tips for race car drivers and fans to help avoid injuries during races and practice sessions. Acknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage

race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. “From the perspective of the fan, the first question to ask is whether you packed appropriately to prepare for the racetrack,” Cormier said. “Your health doesn’t start with us; it starts with you. Did you show up hydrated on a hot day? Did you consume anything that might be detrimental to your health like fried foods, processed foods or alcoholic beverages on an empty stomach. Have you had annual check-ups which include auto club rearview: march 19, 2018

spotlight your heart, blood pressure, cholesterol, electrolytes, etc.? Are you following the advice of your family doctor or internist?” In addition to being a racing fan, Cormier also races go-karts at top speeds of up to 130 mph. He has established relationships with multiple racing organizations, such as ARCA, NASCAR and Formula 1. His collaboration with other safety organizations like the International Council of Motorsports Sciences, Motorsports Safety Education Foundation, After the Impact Fund, Race Go Safer, and Think First has created an important platform for an ever-growing prosperity of safety informational exchange. “I still race professionally, so my goal is to provide safety tips to drivers, pit crew and loyal fans that come out every weekend,” Cormier said. “While the sport has dangers, we can take precautions to provide a measure of safety.” With his surgical background, Cormier has been able to engage companies to establish new technologies to diagnose and rehabilitate head injuries. He is now focusing his efforts on prevention. One particular piece of technology that has Cormier excited is Q30 Innovations’ Q-Collar. Q-Collar’s technology has been approved for sale in Canada, where it is being marketed as the Bauer Neuroshield. The company has been around for more than seven years,

and the data collection remains third party. This means that the company is unable to manipulate the data, which ensures the accuracy of the efficacy and outcomes. This promising research into concussion prevention is inspired by human yawns, woodpecker tongues and mountain-dwelling rams. The manifestation of this work is the novel Q-Collar, a device worn around the neck that works by enhancing the brain’s own physiology by lightly compressing the jugular vein to increase blood volume in the skull. That may help prevent the brain from moving around within the skull and thus could reduce traumatic brain injuries. The Q-Collar is actively being evaluated with consideration for its involvement in motorsports. The Q-Collar is already worn by professional athletes in other forms of high contact sports like football, hockey, soccer and even the military. “I am particularly excited with the possibility of driver athletes, in varying age groups, being able to embrace this novel technology,” Cormier said. “There are exciting nuances with the collar that we think could have an important role with regards to helping on the preventive side of concussions, and part of the technology is established on nature’s physiological advantages found in other animals and human beings. “This collar provides a small defined amount auto club rearview: march 19, 2018

In the battle ram, this band causes a small reduction in blood flow from the brain which creates an internal air bag, which apparently protects this species from brain injuries.” Through Cormier’s work with racecar drivers, he has found that very few have the desire to alter their racing styles, so preventative measures are best taken before the racing begins. “We deal with brain injuries all the time,

ranging from mild to more severe,” Cormier said. “Those predispose you to the longterm effects of brain injury. The diagnosis of concussions is certainly key to taking the racer athlete out of the contest and providing rest. The appropriate rest will help provide longevity in the sport and additionally create an environment whereby transitioning into retirement occurs with their faculties intact. This allows one to both enjoy and remember their retirement. That’s something we’re promoting from the Motorsports Safety Group standpoint.” auto club rearview: march 19, 2018

An Affordable Solution for Improving DownRoad Visibility

W

ho would like to see farther down the road when driving at night? Virtually everyone, of course. OSRAM SYLVANIA, the world’s leader in automotive lighting, can make that widely held desire a reality. And the best part of all is that owning an expensive vehicle is not a

prerequisite. That’s because the SilverStar ULTRA – SYLVANIA’s farthest down road halogen headlight – fits more than 90 percent of all vehicles on the road. Are your lights starting to grow dim? Need a better, clearer view of the road? The SilverStar ULTRA is the quickest, easiest and most affordable remedy. “It’s a simple change,” said Brian Noble, marketing manager for OSRAM SYLVANIA. “What we’re trying to say is this is for the masses. This isn’t for niche vehicles. This is for the vast

When choosing a particular automotive headlight, multiple considerations generally come into play. One is the headlight’s lifespan. Another is the color that the headlight projects. And yet another is how far the headlight allows a driver to see down the road. And, of course, there’s always the price tag. Cost-conscious consumers are forced to sacrifice in one area or another, but the

spotlight majority of vehicles on the road. There’s an easy way to upgrade, an easy way to add value to your car so you can see better when driving. These lights are basically better lighting for improved safety when driving at night.” How surprised are drivers to learn that they don’t have to be in the nicest car to have the most premium headlight? “When we go to activation programs, NASCAR events and festivals, the general population has no

idea,” Noble said. “Auto enthusiasts – roughly 15 percent of the population – they would know about better halogen headlights. But the other 85 percent have never thought about it. They think their headlights are what their headlights are and that’s their only choice.” Research conducted by SYLVANIA indicates that 40 percent of drivers feel unsafe, uncomfortable or nervous when driving at night. A new pair of SilverStar ULTRA headlights

suddenly makes driving at night a lot less stressful. “The driving population consists of 200 million registered drivers,” Noble said. “So, 80 million people are saying, ‘I’m feeling uncomfortable or unsafe when driving at night.’ And some percentage of that is not driving at night – they’re just not going out, they’re coming home early and giving up part of the full day because they’re just nervous about going out, and they don’t feel safe. So, they’re just not going to

Checks two Boxes - CON’T SilverStar ULTRA checks at least two boxes: It’s affordable and it offers terrific down-road visibility. “If I am seeing farther down road and I don’t have an option to change color and it’s just normal natural color, the headlight’s lifespan is going to be shorter,” Noble explained. “If I’m seeing farther down road and I’m making it a

whiter color, life is going to be even shorter. So, it’s a tradeoff: Would you rather see better and see farther, or would you rather have a long-life light bulb. You can’t have both. If you want to have both, you have to buy either LED or HID headlights new with a vehicle. Instead of $50 headlight bulbs, that could be a $2,000 headlight package on your vehicle.

“When you think about farther down the road, $50 is a good price point to help you and your family see more, see better. You may have to change your headlights every year or two, but is it worth it? I would say yes.” Indeed, it is. “There’s no good reason to not want to see better when driving at night,” Noble

hat began as a tobacco growing business in Cuba over 130 years ago, today has evolved into one of the world’s best cigar manufacturers. Melanio Oliva began growing tobacco in the fertile Pinar del Rio of Cuba in 1886. Melanio’s son Hipolito took over from his father in 1920 eventually passing it on to his son Gilberto Oliva, Sr.

who continued the farming until Castro forced him out. Resourceful, Gilberto became a tobacco broker allowing him to travel and emigrate eventually to Nicaragua. By 1969, Gilberto was growing tobacco once again, this time in Nicaragua whose rich soil and climate was close to that of his homeland. Ten years later the Sandanista revolution in

Nicaragua forced Gilberto to grow his tobacco elsewhere. By 1995, with stability back in Nicaragua, Gilberto moved home to Esteli, and resumed his growing and added cigar making to his portfolio. After the cigar boom in the 90s, Gilberto continued making cigars, but being cash strapped like others after the boom, he was able to push ahead by using all the Nicaraguan tobacco

he had been accumulating. His tobacco forced a change in the Oliva blends to all Nicaraguan tobacco and improved his quality. The company’s offerings improved year after year. By 2005, Oliva was being honored by Cigar Aficionado in its top 10 cigars of the year with the Oliva Serie O Classic scoring a 91. The following year, the Oliva Serie G Cameroon made the list of best cigars of the year with a 91. That same year,

Oliva released its Serie V to great acclaim and in 2007 it was rated 4th best cigar with a 93 rating. Oliva cigars continually ranks as one of the best cigars of the year. In 2012, the family released a new Serie V the Melanio edition to honor the man who started it all. Two years later in 2014, the Serie V Melanio would be named the Cigar of the Year with a 96 rating! Near perfection. Just this year, the Serie V rated a 95 and

was the number 3 cigar of the year for 2017. In addition, to the highly rated Serie cigars, Oliva also makes the Nub, which also makes the year’s best cigar list. In fact, Oliva cigars have remained on Cigar Aficionado’s top 25 cigars of the year for 12 years straight. On top of that, Oliva believes in keeping prices in check. The company’s cigars start at under $4 and go up to about $15. The highly rated Serie V belicoso is just over $8.00 depending on local taxes.

Coolant leak failures can be repaired with K-Seal.

Not Your Grandfather’s Stop Leak

C

oolant leak failures are one of the most common reasons for roadside breakdowns. It’s that dreaded feeling when you realize that you’ve got a coolant leak. Maybe it’s the radiator, or the water pump, or worse – the head or the block. You’re likely looking at a bill of hundreds or maybe thousands of dollars to get your vehicle

back on the road. In the past, the early days, you may have been told to try adding pepper, egg, coffee grounds, or even mustard powder in the cooling system to get that leak stopped. More recently someone may have told you to try a stop leak common on the shelves of most auto parts stores. But a lot of those products

contain sodium silicate or liquid glass, the same ingredient they used to seize the engines during “Cash for Clunkers.” Sure the radiator might have been plugged but often other parts of the cooling system were too! But hold on. What if there was a safe way for you to get your trusty friend back on the road for less than

spotlight the cost of a KFC family meal? Well there is, with K-Seal Multi-Purpose Permanent Coolant Leak Repair. Made in the USA, K-Seal is a global bestselling cooling system leak sealer with over 6 million bottles sold. It’s a favorite with professional technicians and here’s what a few of them had to say about it recently: “It’s like magic. If it was the 17th century those who make it would be burned at the stake.” “It’s about the only thing I’ve heard that works. We sell it by the caseload.” “I’ve repaired many a car with K-Seal and I know it works.” (Actual testimonial from independent market survey

Dec 2017) We asked Patrick O’Brien, CEO of K-Seal, what makes K-Seal different from all the other stop leaks on the shelf? “K-Seal is the next generation stop leak technology,” O’Brien said. “We’ve developed a ceramic microfiber formula that is safe to use with all types of coolant / antifreeze. Plus, K-Seal was the first multi-purpose formula designed to fix leaks in all hard parts of the cooling system, including the head, head gasket, block, radiator, heater core, water pump casing and freeze plug. It’s safe to use in all water cooled engines from motor cycles right up to heavy duty trucks, and

everything in between. It even fixed a leak on a Top Fuel dragster, and when K-Seal makes a repair it is permanent. It’s way beyond your Grandfather’s old stop leak.” “K-Seal is the only product to have been independently university tested to the ASTM standard for coolant leak repair products. This means it will seal a leak when it’s meant to but it positively will not block even the narrowest waterways in the cooling system. Plus K-Seal is safe for use with aluminium heads including the Northstar block.” www.kseal.com
