Positively Spring

Last month U.S. Soccer rolled out its Referee Abuse Prevention policy. The goal is to bring to light the difficulties our game officials experience on a regular basis and to do our best to put an end to it. The policy is commonly known as 531-9, Misconduct Towards Officials and has always been in the books, but this revised policy further clarifies levels of misconduct and associated penalties. It’s important for everyone to be aware of and understand that there are consequences to their actions. However, I don’t want to focus on the negative. We simply need to be more positive.

Regardless of your position as a player, coach or spectator, your focus should be on what your team is doing well and the effort they are putting in. We all know referees have an important and critical role in games. They are very aware of that and aim to do their best when they step onto the field, the same as any player.

The overall goal is to provide a positive atmosphere for all participants. As we return to the fields this spring, we call on everyone in the soccer community to project positivity. For sure, not every play or call goes your way, but none so dire as to invoke policy 531-9. Regardless of U.S. Soccer policy, everyone should have a personal policy to not abuse referees, players or fellow spectators. As the old saying goes, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything at all.” Let’s make this a better game. Let’s make it a more positive game, and let’s start now.

EASTERN PENNSYLVANIA YOUTH SOCCER:

SUPPORTING CLUBS, PLAYERS & THE GAME

For over 50 years, Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer has been the foundation of youth soccer in our region, dedicated to developing players, supporting clubs, and growing the game at all levels. As the official state association under U.S. Soccer and U.S. Youth Soccer, we serve as the connection between local clubs and the broader national structure of the sport.

WHO WE ARE

EASTERN PENNSYLVANIA YOUTH SOCCER IS A non-profit organization committed to fostering the game for players of all ages and skill levels. Our mission is simple: to promote and facilitate youth soccer while providing the tools and resources clubs need to succeed. We oversee leagues, coaching education, player development, and statewide competitions – all with the goal of improving the soccer experience for every player, coach, and family involved.

OUR NATIONAL CONNECTION

WE ARE A PROUD MEMBER OF U.S. Soccer, aligning with the governing body of the sport in the United States to ensure our standards, coaching education, and player pathways meet the highest levels of the game.

Additionally, we are one of the 54 State Associations under U.S. Youth Soccer, the largest youth sports organization in the country. This connection provides our players and teams with access to national-level competitions, including the National Championship Series, Presidents Cup, and the Olympic Development Program (ODP).

talent, providing young athletes with access to high-level coaching and competition. At the same time, we support recreational, travel, and intramural programs to ensure that players of all skill levels have opportunities to grow and enjoy the game. We also prioritize accessibility through outreach initiatives, support for underserved areas, and programs like TOPSoccer, which provides opportunities for athletes with disabilities. Scholarships and financial aid programs help keep soccer accessible for all.

Soccer is committed to supporting clubs through strong administration, risk management, and player safety initiatives. We provide guidance on club operations, compliance with national policies, and best practices to help organizations run smoothly. By easing the administrative burden, we allow clubs to focus on creating a positive youth soccer experience for players and families. Player development is at the core of our mission. Through programs like ODP, we identify and train top

Coaching education is another key focus. We offer U.S. Soccer coaching courses, workshops, and training sessions to help coaches develop their skills and stay current with best practices in player development. By investing in coaching education, we ensure that young athletes receive high-quality instruction that supports both their technical growth and love for the game.

Referees play a vital role in the game, and we work closely with the Eastern Pennsylvania Referee Committee to support referee recruitment and development. By ensuring that officials receive proper training and opportunities to advance, we help maintain the quality and integrity of youth soccer throughout the region.

WE’RE HERE TO HELP AT EASTERN PENNSYLVANIA YOUTH

Soccer, we recognize that every club has unique challenges and goals. Whether it’s providing administrative support, improving coaching standards, or creating more competitive opportunities, we are here to help. By working together, we can continue to grow the game, develop young athletes, and ensure soccer remains a positive and accessible experience for all.

Blue Mountain Youth Soccer League: A LEAGUE BUILT ON COMMUNITY AND PASSION

FOR DECADES, THE BLUE MOUNTAIN YOUTH Soccer League has been a cornerstone of recreational soccer in the Lehigh Valley, offering kids of all skill levels a place to play, learn, and grow. Under the leadership of dedicated volunteers, the league has become one of the largest recreational programs in the state, providing opportunities for young athletes who may not be part of competitive travel teams.

At the heart of the Blue Mountain Youth Soccer League’s mission is accessibility. The league ensures that every child, regardless of experience, has a chance to step onto the field. With two divisions– one developmental and one competitive– players can progress at their own pace, enjoying the game while building skills. The developmental B division focuses on playing time and improvement, culminating in the Garcia Cup, where teams are matched against similarly skilled opponents in a round-robin tournament. The A division offers a more traditional competition format with standings and trophies, giving players a taste of structured competition.

The Garcia Cup is more than just a tournament – it’s a defining tradition of the Blue Mountain Youth Soccer League. The event has grown into one of the most anticipated soccer events in the region. What started as a simple year-end competition has become a must-attend event, complete with high-energy matches, community involvement, and an atmosphere that rivals major tournaments.

Beyond the Garcia Cup, the league hosts other beloved events like the U9 Festival, which gathers teams for a day of fun-filled games where every participant receives a medal. The spring season, with its relaxed structure and officiated scrimmages, allows families to enjoy soccer in a stress-free environment. The Blue Mountain Youth Soccer League

also fosters community engagement through volunteer opportunities, partnering with organizations like the Boy Scouts and local high school teams to help run events.

That spirit of community wouldn’t be possible without the league’s volunteers. The Blue Mountain Youth Soccer League is entirely run by volunteers, and without them, it simply wouldn’t exist.

Blue Mountain Youth Soccer League President Dave Dumpel emphasized the importance of stepping up to help, not only for the success of the league but for the impact it has on the children. “There’s a lot that you gain in return,” he said. “The feeling of accomplishment, of giving back to the kids, is something special.”

Longtime volunteer Tricia Wieder has been a pillar of the league, having watched generations of players come through. Dumpel noted that without people like her, Blue Mountain wouldn’t be what it is today, adding, “At some point, Tricia won’t be here to do it anymore, and it’ll be up to the next generation to step in. Volunteers are so key, and I would just encourage everybody to get out there and volunteer when they can.”

What sets the Blue Mountain Youth Soccer League apart from other leagues is its inclusivity. The Blue Mountain Youth Soccer League welcomes all players with high school athletes, travel players, and newcomers all finding a home within the league. Many former players return as coaches, referees, and league organizers, ensuring that the next generation has the same opportunities they once enjoyed.

“We see so many kids come back as coaches or referees because they loved their time in the league,” Dumpel said. “That’s when you know you’ve built something special.”

Looking ahead, the league aims to strengthen its presence in western Lehigh Valley and continue to provide a welcoming environment for all players. The impact of the Blue Mountain Youth Soccer League extends beyond the field– lifelong friendships, lasting memories, and a love for the game are the true victories of the league.

When asked to sum up the Blue Mountain Youth Soccer League in one word, Dumpel’s response was simple: “Home.” That sentiment echoes through every player who laces up their cleats, every coach who volunteers their time, and every family that gathers on the sidelines. The Blue Mountain Youth Soccer League isn’t just about the game– it’s about belonging.

LEADHER

A GAME-CHANGER FOR WOMEN IN SOCCER

THE LANDSCAPE OF SOCCER IS evolving, and women are increasingly taking center stage- not just as players, but as coaches, mentors, and leaders shaping the future of the game. Recognizing the need for a dedicated space to empower, connect, and support women in soccer, Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer has proudly launched the LeadHER Network, a groundbreaking initiative designed to foster growth, leadership, and opportunity for women in the sport.

The LeadHER Network was created with a clear mission: to inspire and support the next generation of female leaders in soccer by providing resources, mentorship, and a strong network of like-minded professionals. Whether you’re an experienced coach, an aspiring mentor, or a woman looking to make an impact in the game, LeadHER is here to amplify your voice, expand your knowledge, and strengthen your leadership skills.

A NETWORK BUILT FOR GROWTH & CONNECTION

AT THE HEART OF LEADHER IS A COMMITMENT TO community and development. This is more than just a networking platform- it’s a movement that fosters lifelong connections and provides meaningful learning opportunities.

Through a range of resources and events, LeadHER aims to bridge the gap for women seeking to advance in coaching, leadership, and beyond.

The network offers:

• A Monthly Interview Series: A podcast-style feature highlighting trailblazing women in soccer, sharing their journeys, challenges, and advice. Our first featured guest is Shelley Kerr, a pioneering figure in the game whose insights will inspire and motivate women looking to advance in the sport.

• Quarterly Newsletters: Providing exclusive coaching insights, leadership strategies, and updates on industry trends, ensuring members stay informed and engaged.

WHY LEADHER MATTERS

THE CHALLENGES FOR WOMEN IN COACHING AND leadership roles in soccer remain significant. Despite growing representation, many women still face barriers to advancement, access to mentorship, and professional development opportunities. LeadHER is stepping in to fill that gap, creating a support system tailored specifically for women in the sport.

“This network is about more than just learning the X’s and O’s of soccer,” says Anna-Kate DePaolo, Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Assistant Technical Director, a driving force behind LeadHER. “It’s about building confidence, creating opportunities, and inspiring the next generation of women to lead in the gamewhether that’s on the field, in an administrative setting, or in player development.”

BECOMING A PART OF LEADHER

LEADHER IS ACTIVELY SEEKING TO GROW ITS NETWORK and invites women in all areas of the game, coaches, administrators, referees, and aspiring leaders, to join the movement. Whether you’re looking for mentorship, career development, or simply a community of strong, like-minded women, LeadHER offers the tools and support to help you succeed.

The network’s first major event and newsletter release will be available this quarter, with more details to follow on upcoming symposiums and learning opportunities. If you’re passionate about advancing women in soccer, LeadHER is your place to connect, learn, and lead.
