TOYOTA AND CHEVY MAY BE CLOSING THE GAP ON FORD BY JARED TURNER

he year 2018 has mostly been the year of the Ford, with Blue Oval drivers accounting for seven of 13 race victories. Sunday night’s Coca-Cola 600 at 1.5-mile Charlotte Motor Speedway offered a renewed sense of hope for rival manufacturers, however, as Toyotas swept the top three finishing positions and Chevrolet placed four drivers in the top nine. So have Chevy and Toyota turned the corner in their quest to narrow the competition gap on Ford? Only time will tell, of course, but Sunday night’s result was certainly encouraging for the Chevy and Toyota camps. Fourth-place Brad Keselowski, the highest finishing Ford driver, was especially impressed by the Toyotas of race winner Kyle Busch and second-place Martin Truex Jr. “They were just in another league,” said Keselowski, who led two laps in his Team Penske Ford. “We’ll go back to the drawing board and try to find some more speed.” CHARLOTTE REARVIEW: MAY 29, 2018

LARSON, HAMLIN AND JOHNSON BOUNCED BACK BIG

hree drivers who finished in the top seven on Sunday night did so despite major adversity. Those drivers — Denny Hamlin, Jimmie Johnson and Kyle Larson — were all involved in accidents but avoided major damage to their cars and rallied to finish third, fifth and seventh, respectively. It was a particularly impressive recovery for Larson and his No. 42 Chip Ganassi Racing team since their setback occurred well into the second half of the race and didn’t allow as much time to stage a rally. “I’m bummed I gave up some track position when I got into the wall, but I was glad to see our team stay with it and come back for a top-10 finish,” said Larson, who spun alone in Turn 2 on lap 272 of 400. “This hasn’t been a great race for me, so glad to see us come away with a good finish tonight.”

3 KEVIN HARVICK’S WEEKEND WENT FROM BAD TO WORSE

iding high after a victory in the All-Star Race that followed five wins in the season’s first dozen points races, Kevin Harvick showed up as the prohibitive favorite to win the Coca-Cola 600. Instead, he finished dead last after a tire failure on lap 85 sent his No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford into the wall and out of the race. For Harvick, it was a rough ending to an already difficult weekend that began with problems getting through pre-qualifying inspection that led NASCAR to eject his car chief. Unable to make a qualifying attempt, Harvick started 39th in the 40-car field. After quickly making his way up into the top five, Harvick hit the wall and his race was done. All in all, it couldn’t have been a much more trying weekend for the 2014 series champ, who so far in 2018 has been the undisputed leader of the pack.

DRIVERS PREFER COKE 600 AERO PACKAGE OVER ALLSTAR PACKAGE

ased purely on what transpired on the track, the Coca-Cola 600 was far less entertaining than the previous weekend’s All-Star Race, which featured an experimental aero package that included, most notably, a restrictor plate that created closer racing and more passing. Although it is yet to be determined whether the All-Star aero package will be used again, some drivers — including 600 race winner Kyle Busch — aren’t keen on the concept. “I liked this (600) package better, because it was more into the driver’s hands,” Busch said. “Good drivers will show up. Good cars will show up. And you’ll have talent that actually comes through. [In the All-Star Race], you just held the pedal to the floor and steered it around the racetrack. It’s not that hard. I think there’s more luck involved in those races than skill, and I’d much rather race races that have skill involved.” CHARLOTTE REARVIEW: MAY 29, 2018

1 CHARLOTTE WIN SETS KYLE BUSCH APART

or quite a while now, Kyle Busch has made no secret about his desire to win a points-paying event at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Coming into Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600, one of Busch’s greatest accomplishments was the fact that he had won a Monster Energy Series race at every current track … except Charlotte. Now, after stomping the field into submission over 600 miles on Sunday night, Busch has won a points-paying race at all 23 tracks that host a Monster Energy Series event. To understand the magnitude of this accomplishment, just consider: Seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson — widely and rightfully considered the best driver in the sport today — has yet to win at three tracks that host the Monster Energy Series. While Busch will almost certainly go on to accomplish many more things as a NASCAR driver, being a winner at every track is an accomplishment that will likely forever distinguish him from his peers. STOP THE FENCE-CLIMBING MADNESS ALREADY BY JARED TURNER

lthough not shown during the live Coca-Cola 600 broadcast, a video surfacing on social media late Sunday night revealed a fan climbing a fence in the middle of the race as 3,500-pound cars whizzed just by just feet below at speeds approaching 200 mph. At least a minute passed before track security personnel saw the fan, climbed the fence and escorted him away — probably to a place he would rather not be. Of course, this race at Charlotte Motor Speedway is hardly the first instance of

someone climbing a fence during a NASCAR event. It happened in June 2017 at Dover and it happened in September 2014 at Richmond. In case you’re keeping score, that’s at least three NASCAR fence climbers in less than four years. For the love of mercy — what is wrong with people? Is there anything more ridiculous than someone risking life and limb over something as useless as this? A word to the wise if you’re thinking about climbing a catchfence to get your 15 seconds of fame: It never ends well, so just don’t do it. Save yourself some embarrassment and leave the fence climbing to the folks who at least sort of know what they’re doing — like Kevin Harvick’s crew members after the recent AllStar Race. That number has since nearly quadrupled. “We’re really growing every day, which is really cool to see,” Cox said. “We know that we’ve really just scratched the surface of where we can go with it, because every day we have people inquiring, ‘What is Speed Crate? Where do I sign up?’ And all that stuff. So, we’re still really just being

introduced at this point.” Fans never know exactly what they will find in a Speed Crate. They just know that all products in a Speed Crate come from officially licensed NASCAR partners and manufacturers. “It changes every month,” Cox said. “We don’t do any duplicates. Now there are 20 active drivers and one retired driver — NASCAR’s 15-time most popular driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Subscriptions are on a month-to-month basis, and subscribers are free to change drivers at any time. Tired of getting Chase Elliott gear, for example? You can switch to Brad Keselowski or someone else with a simple click — and not be charged extra. Speed Crate ships items FebruaryNovember and takes a break in December and January to beef up its inventory for the upcoming NASCAR season. Perhaps the best news of all? Speed Crate is looking to broaden its inventory even more in the months and years to come. “People want die-casts and some other items that aren’t the easiest to get, and we’re working hard to make that happen,” Cox said. “We’re listening to the feedback and making sure we’re kind of adjusting with what people want to see.”

One such area for preventative measures is spinal cord injuries (SCI). The incidence of SCI is highest among persons age 16-30, in whom 53.1 percent of injuries occur; more injuries occur in this age group than all other age groups combined. Males represent 81.2 percent of all report SCIs and 89.8 percent of all sports-related SCIs. Auto accidents are the leading cause of SCI in the United States for people age 65 and younger, while sports and recreation-related SCI injuries primarily affect people under age 29. “In terms of prevention of these types of injuries, there are simple things a person can do like wearing a seatbelt and making sure all passengers are wearing a seatbelt,” Cormier said. “Make sure all car parts are up to date, and the rearview and side mirrors are adjusted to provide more attention to blind spots. Pay attention to the speed limit, and always avoid drunk driving or driving under

the influence of drugs.” If a citizen happens to encounter a car accident in which a driver may have suffered a spinal cord injury, Cormier recommends the ABC steps – airway, breathing, circulation. “When you approach any kind of trauma, it’s important to assess if the person has suffered a neck injury,” Cormier said. “Are they able to move their extremities without any difficulty? Outside of that, it’s important to take in-line cervical precautions by keeping the head in line with the neck and the neck in line with the body. Make sure there are no other red flags.” For people 65 and older, falls are the leading cause of SCI. Cormier offered some preventative steps to avoid these types of injuries. “Preventing these falls is about making sure there are no obstacles in the way at home,” Cormier said. “Make sure it’s well lit. Make sure medication doses are appropriate, and the floor is clear of debris. Don’t overly wax the floors without placing appropriate signs to keep free of traffic.”

He maintains positions on several editorial boards. I am thankful for and have extreme gratitude for what he’s taught me over the years.”

hat began as a tobacco growing business in Cuba over 130 years ago, today has evolved into one of the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best cigar manufacturers. Melanio Oliva began growing tobacco in the fertile Pinar del Rio of Cuba in 1886. Melanioâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s son Hipolito took over from his father in 1920 eventually passing it on to his son Gilberto Oliva, Sr.

who continued the farming until Castro forced him out. Resourceful, Gilberto became a tobacco broker allowing him to travel and emigrate eventually to Nicaragua. By 1969, Gilberto was growing tobacco once again, this time in Nicaragua whose rich soil and climate was close to that of his homeland. Ten years later the Sandanista revolution in

Nicaragua forced Gilberto to grow his tobacco elsewhere. By 1995, with stability back in Nicaragua, Gilberto moved home to Esteli, and resumed his growing and added cigar making to his portfolio. After the cigar boom in the 90s, Gilberto continued making cigars, but being cash strapped like others after the boom, he was able to push ahead by using all the Nicaraguan tobacco

he had been accumulating. His tobacco forced a change in the Oliva blends to all Nicaraguan tobacco and improved his quality. The company’s offerings improved year after year. n the closing laps of the Winston 500 at Talladega Superspeedway on Oct. 15, 2000, Dale Earnhardt, driver of the No. 3 RCR Enterprises Chevrolet, looked to be well out of contention for the win. With less than a dozen laps left after the final restart, he miraculously worked his way through traffic to score his 76th and final Cup series victory. Earnhardt sealed the deal when he took the lead over second-place Kenny Wallace with only two laps remaining. In 18th position on the final restart, Earnhardt moved to 15th with 11 laps to go.

Then with eight laps remaining, Earnhardt hooked onto the bumpers of many of the 27 cars still on the lead lap, working the draft masterfully until he got to the lead. As the cars came to the white flag, Earnhardt had finally gained the lead. He pulled ahead of Wallace with third-place Joe Nemechek in tow, and held on for the victory for the final lap around the 2.66-mile track. As he crossed under the checkered flag, Earnhardt scored his 10-career victory at the 2.66-mile Alabama superspeedway and his third in four previous Talladega races. “I was very lucky,” Earnhardt said. “I kept working the outside and it didn’t work.
