5 ALL ISN’T WELL BETWEEN TEAMMATES KURT BUSCH AND KEVIN HARVICK BY JARED TURNER

emember their early years in the sport when Kurt Busch and Kevin Harvick were often less than friendly with each other? How about a couple years ago at Talladega when Harvick reached into Busch’s car on pit road after the race, appearing to attempt a punch? Despite playing relatively nicely together since becoming teammates in 2014, Busch and Harvick clearly are still not exactly best buds — and that was apparent at Chicagoland. Perturbed that Harvick had passed him on the final lap of Stage 2 to take the stage victory and the accompanying playoff point, Busch lashed out. “That’s a teammate right there,” Busch said over his in-car radio. “That’s what a teammate does. Never expected that from a teammate. Never expected it. Wow.” While there was nothing wrong with Harvick’s move, perhaps Busch is frustrated that he has two playoff points this season, compared to Harvick’s 27. CHICAGOLAND REARVIEW: JULY 2, 2018

4 THE BIG 3 MAY BE LOSING THEIR GRIP

hile Kyle Busch’s win at Chicagoland Speedway added to the growing total of victories amassed this season by NASCAR’s new “Big 3” of Busch, Kevin Harvick and Martin Truex Jr., Sunday’s outcome offers at least some hope that others may be closing the gap on this year’s trio of top performers. While Busch, Harvick and Truex finished first, third and fourth, respectively, at Chicagoland, the secondplace finisher — Kyle Larson — appeared to have the fastest car in the closing laps. Meanwhile, six others not named Kyle Busch, Harvick or Truex each spent a double-digit number of laps out front. And one of those drivers, Aric Almirola, led a race-high 70 laps. While it’s obvious that work remains to be done for another driver besides Busch, Harvick and Truex to make a legitimate run at the championship, maybe, just maybe, this year’s three-horse race for supremacy might soon be CHICAGOLAND REARVIEW: JULY 2, 2018

3 KYLE LARSON WAS COOL WITH KYLE BUSCH’S BUMP-ANDRUN

till searching for his first win of 2018, Kyle Larson seemingly had every reason to be miffed if not downright angry after falling short of victory at Chicagoland thanks to a last-lap, last-corner spin triggered by a bump from race winner Kyle Busch. But, knowing that he had essentially done the same thing to Busch just half a lap earlier, Larson was not at all angry after the race. “I think if roles were reversed, I would have done the same thing if he got into me off (Turn) 2,” the Chip Ganassi Racing driver admitted. “So, I probably would have ran into him into (Turn) 3, so, can’t fault him for that. That was just hard racing.” The only real difference between the two moves? Larson spun from Busch’s bump, but Busch didn’t spin Larson’s. Regardless, Larson managed to avoid damage to his car and still finished second.

2 KYLE BUSCH DOESN’T CARE WHAT THE FANS THINK

ever has there been a NASCAR driver who has embraced the role of villain more than Kyle aka “Rowdy” Busch. Sunday’s race at Chicagoland offered a classic example. Moments after spinning Kyle Larson for the lead and the win in the final turn, Busch got out of his car at the start-finish and celebrated as chorus of boos rained down from the frontstretch grandstands. After making a fake crying gesture to mock the crowd’s reaction, the 2015 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion didn’t mince words in describing how he felt about the fans in attendance who had been voicing their disapproval. “My fans — they’re pretty passionate,” Busch said. “They’re pretty powerful with what we got going with ‘Rowdy Nation.’ The rest of the of them, I don’t know what they’re booing about. THE KYLES PUT ON A SHOW FOR THE AGES

ven if you didn’t like the final outcome of Sunday’s race, virtually everyone would agree that you couldn’t have asked for a more exciting finish. Two of the sport’s most talented drivers — Kyle Busch and Kyle Larson — got bottled up in lapped traffic, then staged a last-lap battle for the ages that culminated in Busch booting Larson out of the way in the final corner just moments after Larson had done the same to him in Turn 2. After sending Larson into a spin, Busch’s No. 18 car bounced off the wall and limped across the finish line with major damage and a flat tire. Had the race gone even another lap, Larson would have retaken the lead because even with his spin, he managed to finish second. Incredible stuff. This was the kind of finish NASCAR needed in what has been an otherwise humdrum season aside from February’s Daytona 500. CHICAGOLAND REARVIEW: JULY 2, 2018

ith the NASCAR world abuzz about Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s official debut as an in-race announcer for NASCAR on NBC, a good bit of extra anticipation surrounded the broadcast of Sunday’s race at Chicagoland Speedway. Thankfully, NASCAR’s 15-time most popular driver didn’t disappoint. From the earliest moments of the telecast all the way through the postrace coverage, it was abundantly clear that Earnhardt Jr. is a natural for his new gig. And why wouldn’t he be? Only seven months and

change removed from his last race as a driver, Earnhardt Jr. — much like fellow in-race announcers Jeff Burton (a former driver) and Steve Letarte (a former crew chief) — arrived on the job with an inside knowledge of the sport that relatively few others could ever bring. Fan reviews of Earnhardt Jr.’s debut performance trickled in on Twitter throughout Sunday’s broadcast, and, not surprisingly, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Earnhardt Jr., for his part, seemed to feel good about how things went, despite admittedly feeling shaky at first. “I was supernervous,” Earnhardt Jr. said during a short post-race video he shared on Twitter. “There’s some things going on up in that booth that, man, are way over my head.” CHICAGOLAND REARVIEW: JULY 2, 2018

CHICAGOLAND ATTENDANCE IS CAUSE FOR CONCERN For anyone watching Sunday’s race, it was impossible not to see all the empty seats right at the start-finish line and scattered throughout the main grandstand. This, of course, was the first Monster Energy Series race held in the summer at Chicagoland since 2010. From 2011-2017, the suburban Chicago track hosted the playoff opener in mid-September. With Sunday’s attendance

Chicagoland was being so poor, one has laden with empty to wonder if Chicagoland seats throughout wouldn’t be better off the weekend GETTY IMAGES moving back to the fall when the temperatures are more forgiving. That number has since nearly quadrupled. “We’re really growing every day, which is really cool to see,” Cox said. “We know that we’ve really just scratched the surface of where we can go with it, because every day we have people inquiring, ‘What is Speed Crate? Where do I sign up?’ And all that stuff. So, we’re still really just being

introduced at this point.” Fans never know exactly what they will find in a Speed Crate. They just know that all products in a Speed Crate come from officially licensed NASCAR partners and manufacturers. “It changes every month,” Cox said. “We don’t do any duplicates. variety of career backgrounds, including sales, marketing, finance and business development. Jim Hart was strictly white collar during the 35 years he called on big-business clients to buy his electronics and computer accessories. In that career world, most of his associates sported crisp office attire and clean fingernails. That all changed for Hart when he became a PIRTEK franchise owner. A PIRTEK Mobile Service Vehicle arrives onsite where a technician performs the repair, minimizing equipment downtime. “The PIRTEK sales call is a blue-collar call,” said Hart, who acquired a South San Francisco PIRTEK. “You are going into a service garage with no appointment, looking for the guy with the dirtiest hands to start the questioning process to eventually get you to the decision maker.” Hart said it took him a while to acclimate to his new role, which takes him deep into the hands-on industrial world. But he’s happy he made the switch. “There was definitely an adjustment period from my sales and marketing background where you make appointments in advance to make a formal sales presentation,” he said. “Now every day is different. Even though the process and products are consistent, you never know what opportunities are ahead.” Dan Currid’s career experience was different than Hart’s. The owner of PIRTEK San Leandro in San Leandro, CA, Currid did have a background in heavy equipment. Over an 18-year career with a tractor company, his roles included warehouse supervisor, parts manager, sales manager and field service supervisor. “If you want to own a PIRTEK franchise, it’s not necessary to have that kind of background,” Currid said. “But mine did

make the transition smooth for me. I also have a lot of industry contacts and relationships from my previous work, which provided me with an edge.” Doug Mack, owner of PIRTEK Power Inn in Sacramento, CA, had a more technical background before acquiring his franchise. Mack worked in cable TV and high-speed internet for a private community in Sacramento County. “I wore every hat that you could possibly imagine,” he said. Mack added that while he was always mechanically inclined, working a great deal with cable and fittings, he still needed some assistance on the business side of PIRTEK ownership. “I did get a lot of help from corporate and from the other owners, too,” he said. “They were very helpful and supportive when I was getting started.” According to Glenn Duncan, CEO of PIRTEK, that diversity of backgrounds is a characteristic of PIRTEK franchise ownership. “We provide in-depth training for all our franchise owners, so they grasp every facet of the business,” Duncan said. “A person can succeed with PIRTEK, regardless of background. In the end, it doesn’t really depend on whether someone comes from a white-collar or blue-color background. One such area for preventative measures is spinal cord injuries (SCI). The incidence of SCI is highest among persons age 16-30, in whom 53.1 percent of injuries occur; more injuries occur in this age group than all other age groups combined. Males represent 81.2 percent of all report SCIs and 89.8 percent of all sports-related SCIs. Auto accidents are the leading cause of SCI in the United States for people age 65 and younger, while sports and recreation-related SCI injuries primarily affect people under age 29. “In terms of prevention of these types of injuries, there are simple things a person can do like wearing a seatbelt and making sure all passengers are wearing a seatbelt,” Cormier said. “Make sure all car parts are up to date, and the rearview and side mirrors are adjusted to provide more attention to blind spots. Pay attention to the speed limit, and always avoid drunk driving or driving under

the influence of drugs.” If a citizen happens to encounter a car accident in which a driver may have suffered a spinal cord injury, Cormier recommends the ABC steps – airway, breathing, circulation. “When you approach any kind of trauma, it’s important to assess if the person has suffered a neck injury,” Cormier said. “Are they able to move their extremities without any difficulty? Outside of that, it’s important to take in-line cervical precautions by keeping the head in line with the neck and the neck in line with the body. Make sure there are no other red flags.” For people 65 and older, falls are the leading cause of SCI. Cormier offered some preventative steps to avoid these types of injuries. “Preventing these falls is about making sure there are no obstacles in the way at home,” Cormier said. “Make sure it’s well lit. Make sure medication doses are appropriate, and the floor is clear of debris. Don’t overly wax the floors without placing appropriate signs to keep free of traffic.”

hat began as a tobacco growing business in Cuba over 130 years ago, today has evolved into one of the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best cigar manufacturers. Melanio Oliva began growing tobacco in the fertile Pinar del Rio of Cuba in 1886. Melanioâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s son Hipolito took over from his father in 1920 eventually passing it on to his son Gilberto Oliva, Sr.

who continued the farming until Castro forced him out. Resourceful, Gilberto became a tobacco broker allowing him to travel and emigrate eventually to Nicaragua. By 1969, Gilberto was growing tobacco once again, this time in Nicaragua whose rich soil and climate was close to that of his homeland. Ten years later the Sandanista revolution in

Nicaragua forced Gilberto to grow his tobacco elsewhere. By 1995, with stability back in Nicaragua, Gilberto moved home to Esteli, and resumed his growing and added cigar making to his portfolio. After the cigar boom in the 90s, Gilberto continued making cigars, but being cash strapped like others after the boom, he was able to push ahead by using all the Nicaraguan tobacco

he had been accumulating. His tobacco forced a change in the Oliva blends to all Nicaraguan tobacco and improved his quality. The company’s offerings improved year after year. rnie Irvan, driver of the No. 28 Robert Yates Racing Ford, dominated the Mello Yello 500 at the 1.5-mile Charlotte Motor Speedway on Oct. 10, 1993. The California native sealed the deal by leading an incredible 328 of 334 total laps to collect the ninth of 15-career victories. Collectively, Mark Martin, Dale Earnhardt and Jeff Gordon led the remaining six laps. Irvan started from the second position alongside pole sitter Gordon but managed to lead lap one to lap 64. From there, he held the point from laps 66 to 161, 165 to 210, 212 to

272 and 274 to 334. The only other time a car and driver were that dominant at CMS was 23 years later in 2016 when Martin Truex Jr. led 392 of 400 laps in the Coca-Cola 600. Irvan had been named the fulltime replacement for the late Davey Allison beginning with the September 5th Southern 500 at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway.
