5 JIMMIE JOHNSON SHOWED FLASHES OF HIS OLD SELF BY JARED TURNER

rior to incurring a one-lap penalty for pitting outside of his box and ultimately getting caught up in a late-race accident, Jimmie Johnson was in the thick of the hunt for the victory on Saturday night at Daytona. In fact, Johnson’s 10 laps out front were a season-high for the seven-time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion, who prior to Saturday night had led only two laps the entire season. Johnson, who is currently in the longest drought of his Monster Energy Series career, made some aggressive moves at the front of the pack and looked like he was committed to doing whatever it took to win, prior to his issues on pit road. While it’s quite possible that Johnson’s strong run at Daytona won’t carry over to this weekend or any other races in the near future, Johnson’s seemingly bigger-than-ever fan base had to be pleased to see their guy squarely in the mix. 4 BRAD KESELOWSKI IS SICK OF BLOCKING

ne of several major multi-car wrecks on Saturday night occurred when Brad Keselowski, running just behind race leader William Byron, got hit from behind by Ricky Stenhouse Jr. The contact sent Keselowski up the track into another car, and it was carnage from there. Minutes later, after exiting his battered vehicle, Keselowski surprisingly blamed Byron — not Stenhouse — for the accident. “Ricky was doing the best he could to give me a good push and had a great run to take the lead, and the car in front of me (Byron) just threw a late, bad block,” Keselowski said. “I made the mistake of lifting instead of just driving through him, and that’s my fault. I know better than that. I’ve got to wreck more people, and then they’ll stop blocking me late and behind like that. … We’ll go to Talladega and we’ll wreck everybody that throws a bad block like that.” DAYTONA REARVIEW: JULY 9, 2018

RICKY STENHOUSE JR. COULDN’T GET OUT OF HIS OWN WAY

icky Stenhouse Jr. played a role in no fewer than five wrecks on Saturday night, even if some of the wrecks weren’t his doing. As Stenhouse made more and more enemies — most notably, Kyle Busch, whom he wrecked while the two ran near the front of the pack — Twitter lit up with lots of folks basically accusing the two-time NASCAR Xfinity Series champion of driving over his head. The most provocative tweet of the night came from the account of a fellow Ford team — Wood Brothers Racing — which proclaimed, “Stenhouse gonna win this race tonight. One way or another.” Well, Stenhouse didn’t win. He finished 17th, one lap down, after his involvement in one too many wrecks proved too much to overcome. Afterward, the Roush Fenway Racing driver lamented his own aggression. “I was frustrated with myself causing crashes like that,” he said. “You don’t ever really want to do that.” DAYTONA REARVIEW: JULY 9, 2018

RESTRICTOR PLATE RACING NEVER FAILS

razy. Insane. Wacky. Call it whatever one may, but Saturday’s showdown under the lights at Daytona could be most simply and accurately described as quintessential restrictor-plate racing. By the time the dust settled, more than half of the cars in the 40-car field had been involved in at least one wreck, and the race turned out to be first and foremost a battle of attrition. While one could argue that the numerous multi-car wrecks were all triggered to at least some extent by driver error, the fact is that the plates — which choke horsepower and keep drivers bunched up in tight packs — created an environment for mistakes to easily be made. So, is that a bad thing? Some drivers hate plate racing and always will. It’s just the way it is. But you’d be hard-pressed to find a race with any more excitement and drama than what fans witnessed on Daytona’s high banks. DAYTONA REARVIEW: JULY 9, 2018

DESPITE GROWING PAINS, ERIK JONES HAS THE GOODS

hen Joe Gibbs Racing announced plans last year to part ways with Matt Kenseth in order to make room for Erik Jones in the organization’s four-car Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series stable, there was no questioning JGR’s commitment to Jones — who for several years now has been widely regarded as one of the sport’s stars of tomorrow. But after an up-and-down rookie season in 2017 with Furniture Row Racing, followed by a so-so first half of 2018 with JGR, Jones didn’t show up at Daytona Saturday as a favorite to go to Victory Lane. But that’s exactly where the 22-year-old from Byron, Michigan ended up, after leading only one lap — the final one. While Jones likely has a few more growing pains to endure before reaching his full potential, Saturday night offered the best validation yet for why Joe Gibbs hired Jones. JUNIOR CONTINUES TO NAIL HIS NEW GIG BY JARED TURNER

ollowing what most folks considered a wildly successful NASCAR broadcasting debut with NBC Sports at Chicagoland Speedway, Dale Earnhardt Jr. entered Week Two of his new gig with the running of Saturday night’s race at Daytona. And, as was the case at Chicagoland, he received high marks from most all corners of the NASCAR globe — or at least the hundreds of fans who used Twitter as their platform to grade his performance. Earnhardt, who admitted to feeling a bit shaky when the

cameras turned on at Chicagoland for the first time, seemed like an old pro at Daytona, where he was joined again in the booth by veteran broadcaster Rick Allen and fellow racer-turned-announcer Jeff Burton. If there’s one “criticism” that could be made of Junior’s announcing, it’s that he struggled with his pronunciation of two words — a fact that Earnhardt’s chief publicist, Mike Davis, playfully brought to the attention of the Twitter-verse during Saturday’s broadcast. “Forgive him,” Davis tweeted. “I’ve never actually heard an Earnhardt correctly say the word signal or ambulance.” Suffice it to say that we do “forgive” NASCAR’s 15-time most popular driver— as does seemingly everyone else. KUDOS TO KYLE BUSCH FOR BEING GRACIOUS IN DISAPPOINTMENT Let’s face it: Kyle Busch is prone to not handling losing all that well. That’s especially true when he’s been wrecked by another competitor. But after watching a good portion of Saturday night’s race from the sidelines after getting taken out by Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Busch seemed genuinely thrilled to see Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Erik Jones get the victory. And he offered that

That number has since nearly quadrupled. “We’re really growing every day, which is really cool to see,” Cox said. “We know that we’ve really just scratched the surface of where we can go with it, because every day we have people inquiring, ‘What is Speed Crate? Where do I sign up?’ And all that stuff. So, we’re still really just being

introduced at this point.” Fans never know exactly what they will find in a Speed Crate. They just know that all products in a Speed Crate come from officially licensed NASCAR partners and manufacturers. “It changes every month,” Cox said. “We don’t do any duplicates. t’s not often that a PIRTEK technician is summoned to a classroom to make hoses, but this is no ordinary school. PIRTEK Space Coast tech Bobby Kennedy fabricated hose assemblies for the Florida Institute of

Technology in Melbourne, FL, and one of its jet-powered dragsters. Through a partnership with nearby Larsen Motorsports, the school supports the drag-racing operation by offering hands-on internships and research opportunities for budding engineers and fabricators enrolled in the university. Students report to Larsen Motorsports’ high-tech workshop, which includes $8 million in inventory and equipment. DAYTONA REARVIEW: JULY 9, 2018

SPOTLIGHT Each jet engine needed for a dragster costs $250,000 – used. But it’s a $6,000 hose assemble that helps power these dragsters, which can reach speeds of 300 miles per hour in a quarter-mile. The 15- to 23-inch-long hoses connect to two tanks – one diesel and the other biofuel – to shutoff valves in the cockpit of these 1,500-pound vehicles. Kennedy says it’s not an overly complicated call, but one he enjoys nonetheless. “It’s remarkable what they are doing with these dragsters,” said Kennedy, who joined PIRTEK Space Coast a year ago. “I’ve never experienced any call like this before.” Incidentally, these jet dragsters are not just an expensive hobby. They race on a National Hot Rod Association circuit. Driver Elaine Larsen, co-owner of Larsen Motorsports, is a two-time International Hot Rod Association world champion while racing on the Florida Tech team. The team also has been featured on “Jay Leno’s Garage.” PIRTEK’s hose work on the dragster goes hand in hand with the company’s many motorsports sponsorships over the years. For example, PIRTEK is an associate partner of Team Penske in the NASCAR XFINITY Series season. The company serves as the primary sponsor for the

team’s No. 22 Ford Mustang in the NXS race at Daytona International Speedway on July 6. Speaking of Florida, PIRTEK has a network of 13 locations in the Sunshine State – more than in any other state. In addition, PIRTEK’s corporate headquarters are in Rockledge, FL. Several of the Florida PIRTEK owners have multiple franchises, including “mobile only” Tier 2 locations that allow owners to keep inventory in a small warehouse or storage facility. Some owners have both kinds of franchises: For example, Dan and Karen Ferretti own a full PIRTEK Service & Supply Center in Rockledge (PIRTEK Space Coast) and a “mobile only” location in Daytona (PIRTEK Daytona). “It makes franchise ownership more accessible to a larger group,” Dan Ferretti said of the Tier 2 “mobile only” option. “It also enables existing owners to own multiple franchises – we wanted to take advantage of that benefit.” PIRTEK is the only franchise of its kind in the United States, providing hydraulic and industrial hose replacement sales and services. There are 76 PIRTEK franchises and a fleet of Mobile Service Vehicles throughout the United States. Globally, PIRTEK has more than 400 locations and 2,000 Mobile Service Vehicles in 23 countries.

One such area for preventative measures is spinal cord injuries (SCI). The incidence of SCI is highest among persons age 16-30, in whom 53.1 percent of injuries occur; more injuries occur in this age group than all other age groups combined. Males represent 81.2 percent of all report SCIs and 89.8 percent of all sports-related SCIs. Auto accidents are the leading cause of SCI in the United States for people age 65 and younger, while sports and recreation-related SCI injuries primarily affect people under age 29. “In terms of prevention of these types of injuries, there are simple things a person can do like wearing a seatbelt and making sure all passengers are wearing a seatbelt,” Cormier said. “Make sure all car parts are up to date, and the rearview and side mirrors are adjusted to provide more attention to blind spots. Pay attention to the speed limit, and always avoid drunk driving or driving under

the influence of drugs.” If a citizen happens to encounter a car accident in which a driver may have suffered a spinal cord injury, Cormier recommends the ABC steps – airway, breathing, circulation. “When you approach any kind of trauma, it’s important to assess if the person has suffered a neck injury,” Cormier said. “Are they able to move their extremities without any difficulty? Outside of that, it’s important to take in-line cervical precautions by keeping the head in line with the neck and the neck in line with the body. Make sure there are no other red flags.” For people 65 and older, falls are the leading cause of SCI. Cormier offered some preventative steps to avoid these types of injuries. “Preventing these falls is about making sure there are no obstacles in the way at home,” Cormier said. “Make sure it’s well lit. Make sure medication doses are appropriate, and the floor is clear of debris. Don’t overly wax the floors without placing appropriate signs to keep free of traffic.”

hat began as a tobacco growing business in Cuba over 130 years ago, today has evolved into one of the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best cigar manufacturers. Melanio Oliva began growing tobacco in the fertile Pinar del Rio of Cuba in 1886. Melanioâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s son Hipolito took over from his father in 1920 eventually passing it on to his son Gilberto Oliva, Sr.

who continued the farming until Castro forced him out. Resourceful, Gilberto became a tobacco broker allowing him to travel and emigrate eventually to Nicaragua. By 1969, Gilberto was growing tobacco once again, this time in Nicaragua whose rich soil and climate was close to that of his homeland. Ten years later the Sandanista revolution in

Nicaragua forced Gilberto to grow his tobacco elsewhere. By 1995, with stability back in Nicaragua, Gilberto moved home to Esteli, and resumed his growing and added cigar making to his portfolio. After the cigar boom in the 90s, Gilberto continued making cigars, but being cash strapped like others after the boom, he was able to push ahead by using all the Nicaraguan tobacco

he had been accumulating. His tobacco forced a change in the Oliva blends to all Nicaraguan tobacco and improved his quality. The company’s offerings improved year after year. A WINDING ROAD STEWART GETS FIRST SONOMA WIN IN 2001 BY BEN WHITE

n Sunday June 24, 2001, Tony Stewart was in only his third season as a NASCAR Winston Cup driver when he won the Dodge/Savemart 350 at Sonoma Raceway. It was only his third start on the California road course while driving for Joe Gibbs Racing. Stewart started the 110-lap race from the third position and sealed the deal by taking the lead over road course ace Robby Gordon, in the Jim Smith-owned Ford, with only 11 laps remaining. He held off Gordon by 1.746 seconds at the finish to collect the 11th of 49

career Cup series victories. Stewart won three times at Sonoma, including the final victory of his career in 2016. Stewart has concentrated on open-wheel racing for much of his career, winning the Indy car championship in 1997. Having grown up in Indiana, he set his sights there before the opportunity to drive for team owner Joe Gibbs turned his attention to NASCAR in 1999. “I just like the road courses,” Stewart said in recent years. “I’ve always liked Sonoma. It’s really a driver’s track. It’s tough to make your car drive perfect all day. You can have a really good car, but it’s going to slide around and you’re going to struggle for grip, and that’s what makes it so fun.
