5 TEAM PENSKE IS MAKING GAINS BY JARED TURNER

y all accounts, it’s been only a so-so season for Team Penske, which has just one win between its three drivers — Joey Logano, Brad Keselowski and Ryan Blaney. On Saturday night at Kentucky, the Penske boys looked as racy as they have in quite some time, however, as Blaney finished second, Keselowski came home third and Logano finished 10th. So, is Team Penske closing the gap on this season’s frontrunners from Stewart-Haas Racing, Joe Gibbs Racing and Furniture Row Racing? “I hope so,” said Blaney, who was still no match for race winner Martin Truex Jr. at Kentucky. “That’s really all you can hope for, but you never know. … We’ve just got to keep working hard like we all have been at Team Penske and just keep trying to close that gap until we dominate races and we lead a bunch of laps. 4 IT’S GETTING CROWDED NEAR THE BUBBLE

lex Bowman slapping the wall and finishing dead last among the 39 contestants at Kentucky Speedway has changed the look of the battle for the 16th and final spot in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs. Now, instead of Bowman holding a relatively comfortable advantage over his closest pursuers for the transfer spot, the first-year driver of the No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet is just 19 points ahead of Roush Fenway Racing’s Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Also now within striking distance is Wood Brothers Racing’s Paul Menard, who sits 55 points behind Bowman. Of course, any one of these drivers could punch an automatic ticket to the playoffs by winning any one of the final seven regular season races. The bottom line? Buckle your seatbelt. EVERYONE IS STILL CHASING THE BIG 3

ith Martin Truex Jr.’s win at Kentucky, Truex, Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick have now combined to win 14 of this season’s 19 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series races to date. In terms of non-restrictor-plate races, the numbers of the big three are even more impressive — they’ve won 14 of 16 races. So is it practically a forgone conclusion that Truex, Busch or Harvick is going to walk away with the 2018 championship? Unless something changes soon, it certainly appears that way. “Well, they’ve got five wins, we’ve got four,” Truex, the reigning series champion, said of how he measures up to Busch and Harvick in 2018. “That’s how it’s played out so far. But I think all three of us have great teams. Those two guys are great drivers. Obviously, I have a lot of respect for them. 2 TRUEX IS SHARING SOME JUKEBOX LOVE

inners at Kentucky these days are awarded a full-sized jukebox, so what does Martin Truex Jr. plan to do with his newest jukebox from the 1.5-mile track? “One is in my basement. I use it all the time,” he said. “That sucker is Bluetooth, so you can just turn on your phone, Bluetooth, sit down there and jam out and drink beers in your basement by yourself or with your buddies or whatever. I have a shop in Mooresville (North Carolina) where every time I win I take the trophy there and I leave it there for a while. I have a fan store where I have a lot of merchandise and sell things and fans can come in and take pictures with trophies. So, I’ll put it there probably, and maybe I’ll make sure it just plays like all the time so when people come in they can check it out.”

1 TRUEX IS THE NEW KING OF KENTUCKY SPEEDWAY

n the first six Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series races at Kentucky Speedway, Kyle Busch and Brad Keselowski combined to win five races. But this year and last year, there’s been a new sheriff in town. And his name is Martin Truex Jr. Backing up his dominant Kentucky performance from a year ago, Truex won all three stages of Saturday night’s race and cruised to his second consecutive victory at the 1.5-mile track. Hands-down the class of the field, Truex’s Furniture Row Racing Toyota led 174 of 267 laps and rolled to a comfortable 1.9-second victory over the second-place of Ryan Blaney. Over the past two races at Kentucky, Truex’s No. 78 car has combined to win all six stages and lead 326 of the 541 laps run. Clearly, Truex’s No. 78 team led by crew chief Cole Pearn has discovered something about Kentucky that everyone else is missing. KENTUCKY REARVIEW: JULY 16, 2018

immie Johnson hasn’t had much to celebrate this season, but the seventime champion received some good news last week when crew chief Chad Knaus inked a new two-year contract that keeps him at Hendrick Motorsports through the 2020 season. It’s obvious now that Knaus and Johnson have every intention of finishing out their careers together, since

Johnson already had a contract through 2020. While Johnson hasn’t said whether he plans to hang it up from racing after the 2020 season, all signs suggest that will probably be the case for the veteran driver, who will be 45 years old when that time comes. In an era when driver/crew chief pairings typically last no more than five or six years tops, how cool it is to see Johnson and Knaus poised to stay together after all these years. SPAT IS A GOOD THING Nearly a week after Ricky Stenhouse Jr. upset quite a few of his fellow competitors with his aggressive driving at Daytona, Kyle Busch was still seething. Specifically, Busch was upset that Stenhouse didn’t call him and others to apologize for wrecking them. “You wipe out half the field, and I’m pretty sure there would be a pretty busy Monday for him, but there wasn’t. So apparently he just doesn’t care,” Busch said at Kentucky. Told of Busch’s remarks, Stenhouse – who

That number has since nearly quadrupled. “We’re really growing every day, which is really cool to see,” Cox said. “We know that we’ve really just scratched the surface of where we can go with it, because every day we have people inquiring, ‘What is Speed Crate? Where do I sign up?’ And all that stuff. So, we’re still really just being

introduced at this point.” Fans never know exactly what they will find in a Speed Crate. They just know that all products in a Speed Crate come from officially licensed NASCAR partners and manufacturers. “It changes every month,” Cox said. “We don’t do any duplicates. innesota is the “land of 10,000 lakes.” Several of those beautiful lakes are playing host to PIRTEKbranded boats on the 2018 fishing circuit,

a season that includes an annual outing with veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces. PIRTEK USA’s corporate headquarters is sponsoring one fishing boat in the summer-long tournament, while multifranchise owner Craig Heitkamp is sponsoring two. “One of the big pluses is being able to participate in Take a Vet Fishing, which we always like to do,” said Heitkamp, owner of PIRTEK Midway and KENTUCKY REARVIEW: JULY 16, 2018

It’s an annual excursion in which anglers take military veterans out for a day of fun on the water. “This is a great opportunity for PIRTEK people to show some appreciation to our military veterans who have made so many sacrifices on our behalf,” said Georganne DeSeve, marketing manager of PIRTEK USA. “It’s one small way to give something back. The fishing event offers them a day of peace and recreation on some of the most beautiful waters in the country.” Every year during the fishing season, the PIRTEK boats glide across Minnesota lakes as anglers compete to haul in prize catches. The fishing began May 5 at Big Stone Lake in Ortonville and runs until Sept. 14 at Lake of the Woods in Baudette. Participating in the fishing excursions are Minnesotans Keith Kapaun, operations manager at PIRTEK Midway in St. Paul, and Rich Thies, operations manager at PIRTEK Plymouth. It’s the fifth year the pair has

been involved in the competition. The competitive fishing, organized by Minnesota Tournament Trail, is a popular series of events that offer prizes to the most successful fishermen. The tournament finale on Lake of the Woods draws many enthusiasts – sometimes more than 100 boats – to a body of water nearly 70 miles long that borders both Minnesota and Canada. But the big event for both Kapaun and Thies is always Take a Vet Fishing. Both men served in the military and welcome the opportunity to provide their fellow vets with an enjoyable time on the lake. “Considering I’m one of them, this is important to me,” Kapaun said. “After all, we are a band of brothers and sisters.” Thies also expressed appreciation at being able to serve the vets. “They’ve done so much in the service of our country,” he said. “It’s a great privilege to take them out to enjoy the unspoiled lakes and the thrill of pulling in walleye, bass or whatever else they can land. They’re great people and it’s a pleasure to serve them.”

One such area for preventative measures is spinal cord injuries (SCI). The incidence of SCI is highest among persons age 16-30, in whom 53.1 percent of injuries occur; more injuries occur in this age group than all other age groups combined. Males represent 81.2 percent of all report SCIs and 89.8 percent of all sports-related SCIs. Auto accidents are the leading cause of SCI in the United States for people age 65 and younger, while sports and recreation-related SCI injuries primarily affect people under age 29. “In terms of prevention of these types of injuries, there are simple things a person can do like wearing a seatbelt and making sure all passengers are wearing a seatbelt,” Cormier said. “Make sure all car parts are up to date, and the rearview and side mirrors are adjusted to provide more attention to blind spots. Pay attention to the speed limit, and always avoid drunk driving or driving under

the influence of drugs.” If a citizen happens to encounter a car accident in which a driver may have suffered a spinal cord injury, Cormier recommends the ABC steps – airway, breathing, circulation. “When you approach any kind of trauma, it’s important to assess if the person has suffered a neck injury,” Cormier said. “Are they able to move their extremities without any difficulty? Outside of that, it’s important to take in-line cervical precautions by keeping the head in line with the neck and the neck in line with the body. Make sure there are no other red flags.” For people 65 and older, falls are the leading cause of SCI. Cormier offered some preventative steps to avoid these types of injuries. “Preventing these falls is about making sure there are no obstacles in the way at home,” Cormier said. “Make sure it’s well lit. Make sure medication doses are appropriate, and the floor is clear of debris. Don’t overly wax the floors without placing appropriate signs to keep free of traffic.”

hat began as a tobacco growing business in Cuba over 130 years ago, today has evolved into one of the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best cigar manufacturers. Melanio Oliva began growing tobacco in the fertile Pinar del Rio of Cuba in 1886. Melanioâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s son Hipolito took over from his father in 1920 eventually passing it on to his son Gilberto Oliva, Sr.

who continued the farming until Castro forced him out. Resourceful, Gilberto became a tobacco broker allowing him to travel and emigrate eventually to Nicaragua. By 1969, Gilberto was growing tobacco once again, this time in Nicaragua whose rich soil and climate was close to that of his homeland. Ten years later the Sandanista revolution in

Nicaragua forced Gilberto to grow his tobacco elsewhere. By 1995, with stability back in Nicaragua, Gilberto moved home to Esteli, and resumed his growing and added cigar making to his portfolio. After the cigar boom in the 90s, Gilberto continued making cigars, but being cash strapped like others after the boom, he was able to push ahead by using all the Nicaraguan tobacco

he had been accumulating. His tobacco forced a change in the Oliva blends to all Nicaraguan tobacco and improved his quality. The company’s offerings improved year after year. n Sept. 2, 1974, Cale Yarborough, driver of the Junior Johnson and Associates No. 11 Chevrolet, outlasted his fellow rivals both physically and mechanically to win the prestigious Southern 500 at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway. The native of nearby Timmonsville, S.C., sealed the deal by leading 159 of 367 laps including the final 122 around the slick and treacherous 1.366-mile track. He won by one lap over Darrell Waltrip, driving his own No. 17 Chevrolet. Richard Petty fell victim to a crash with Richard Childress on lap 37, while Buddy

Baker crashed with Ritchie Panch while trying to avoid Petty’s spin. David Pearson and Benny Parsons crashed together when Parsons’ engine expired in lap 115. Bobby Allison fell victim to steering issues on lap 80, while Charlie Glotzbach suffered engine issues on lap 280 in the 11 caution-period event. Yarborough proved once again he was a master on his home track, keeping his Chevrolet in one piece to collect his ninth of 10 wins that season. Yarborough went on to finish second to Petty in championship points. “This is the sweetest one yet,” Yarborough said in the “Forty Years of Stock Car Racing” book series. “I was real close to most of the wrecks, and I was lucky to get through them.
