5 The Snow Was The Biggest Winner At Martinsville By jared turner
M
artinsville Speedway has a long history of races affected by rain. Snow? Well, that’s been an altogether different matter — until this year. Thanks to a winter storm that dumped several inches of fluffy white stuff at the Virginia short track between Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, NASCAR was forced to postpone Saturday’s Camping World Truck Series race and Sunday’s Monster Energy Series race to Monday. While the postponement made for a nice doubleheader for fans able to make it out to the track on Monday, one has to wonder what it’s going to take for Martinsville to finally start avoiding some of the weather headaches that have plagued the track for so long. Maybe it’s time that NASCAR consider moving Martinsville’s spring race to the summer. While that would certainly not guarantee a weekend bereft of bad weather, it would at least be something different — and that’s what Martinsville needs right now. martinsville rearview: march 27, 2018

The Struggle Is Real For Jimmie Johnson

n a day when Hendrick Motorsports placed two of its young drivers in the top 10, the struggles continued for the organization’s flagship driver — seven-time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson. One of the all-time most successful drivers in the history of Martinsville Speedway, Johnson fell well short of a 10th career victory at the fabled short track where he’s achieved some of his greatest moments as a driver. While teammates Alex Bowman and Chase Elliott finished seventh and ninth, respectively, Johnson could only muster a 15th-place finish. Now, six races into the 2018 season, Johnson has only one top-10 finish and has yet to record a top-five. He is 17th in the series standings — within striking distance of the cutoff for the playoffs but a far cry from where anyone thought he would be at this point. martinsville rearview: march 27, 2018

3 StewartHaas Racing Remains The Top Team Of 2018

fter seeing a three-race winning streak snapped at Auto Club Speedway on March 18, Stewart-Haas Racing returned to Victory Lane at Martinsville Speedway, courtesy of driver Clint Bowyer. With Bowyer’s win at NASCAR’s shortest track, SHR has now captured four of the season’s first six races. All four of SHR’s drivers are now ranked in the top 11 in the Monster Energy Series standings — a testament to how strong SHR has been so far in 2018. “I would honestly say that the [SHR] crew chiefs and our teams might have been handicapped a few times last year because we couldn’t get stuff done in the order that we needed to as an organization,” SHR vice president of competition Greg Zipadelli said. “They were patient. 2 Kyle Busch Is Tired Of Coming Up A Little Short
S
o, this is starting to become a bit of a recurring theme. Another race, another almost-win for Kyle Busch. Seeking to put his No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota Camry in Victory Lane for the first time in 2018, Busch came up one position short at Martinsville as he finished second for the third time in the last four races and scored his fourth consecutive top-three finish. As expected, Busch is far from content with continuing to run well but ultimately falling short of victory. “We keep executing, we keep doing a good job, but it’s not good enough,” the 2015 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion said after finishing one second behind Martinsville race winner Clint Bowyer. “It’s very frustrating. I’m about half my career total of wins with secondplace finishes, so that’s pretty discouraging. Guess for as often as I win, I lose more.” martinsville rearview: march 27, 2018

Clint Bowyer Is Still Plenty Capable
T
hought Clint Bowyer wasn’t still capable of winning races at NASCAR’s highest level? It’s time to think again. Bowyer proved his doubters wrong in a big way in Monday’s rescheduled race at Martinsville Speedway where the Emporia, Kansas native triumphed for the first time since October 2012. Bowyer, who notched his first victory since joining the powerhouse Stewart-Haas Racing organization ahead of the 2017 season, ended a 190-race dry spell extending all the way back to his days at Michael Waltrip Racing. Along with winning in convincing fashion and collecting his first Martinsville Speedway grandfather clock, Bowyer punched a ticket to the 2018 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs and will now be one of 16 championshipeligible drivers when the regular season concludes in mid-September. martinsville rearview: march 27, 2018

lint Bowyer has an office where he proudly displays photos from races he’s won. Over the past several years, as he’s struggled to win in NASCAR’s premier series, the wall has become increasingly static. Most notably missing for Bowyer has been a Victory Lane picture with his two young children, who had not yet been born when he last won a NASCAR premier series race in the fall of 2012. But, following his victory on Monday at Martinsville Speedway, Bowyer posed for
photos with his wife, Lorra, son Cash and daughter Presley. Bowyer especially wanted to get a Victory Lane photo with 3-year-old Cash — his dad’s biggest fan. “The one thing that’s always missing is a picture with him, you know, and that’s where it changes your thought process and actually your reasoning for racing,” Bowyer said. “A lot of people want to think about these kids as being a distraction to drivers and to athletes — hell, we ain’t athletes, we’ve got power steering — but to drivers and things like that. You start to think about what really matters in life, and the one thing that I didn’t want was for him to go through life and know what this was all about. So to be able to have him in Victory Lane, that was pretty cool, wasn’t it?” Appropriately, Cash also got to hold the checkered flag while his dad held him in his arms and conducted post-race interviews. For anyone who values the importance of family, it was a beautiful sight seeing one of NASCAR’s most affable drivers savor Monday’s victory with his son. “I’m so happy for him to finally get another one, get a picture with his son,” said Bowyer’s crew chief, Mike Bugarewicz. “I know he’s been wanting that for a long, long time.” martinsville rearview: march 27, 2018

MSG shares tips for race car drivers and fans to help avoid injuries during races and practice sessions. He has established relationships with multiple racing organizations, such as ARCA, NASCAR and Formula 1. His collaboration with other safety organizations like the International Council of Motorsports Sciences, Motorsports Safety Education Foundation, After the Impact Fund, Race Go Safer, and Think First has created an important platform for an ever-growing prosperity of safety informational exchange. “I still race professionally, so my goal is to provide safety tips to drivers, pit crew and loyal fans that come out every weekend,” Cormier said. “While the sport has dangers, we can take precautions to provide a measure of safety.” With his surgical background, Cormier has been able to engage companies to establish new technologies to diagnose and rehabilitate head injuries. He is now focusing his efforts on prevention. One particular piece of technology that has Cormier excited is Q30 Innovations’ Q-Collar. Q-Collar’s technology has been approved for sale in Canada, where it is being marketed as the Bauer Neuroshield. The company has been around for more than seven years,
and the data collection remains third party. This means that the company is unable to manipulate the data, which ensures the accuracy of the efficacy and outcomes. This promising research into concussion prevention is inspired by human yawns, woodpecker tongues and mountain-dwelling rams. The manifestation of this work is the novel Q-Collar, a device worn around the neck that works by enhancing the brain’s own physiology by lightly compressing the jugular vein to increase blood volume in the skull. That may help prevent the brain from moving around within the skull and thus could reduce traumatic brain injuries. The Q-Collar is actively being evaluated with consideration for its involvement in motorsports. The Q-Collar is already worn by professional athletes in other forms of high contact sports like football, hockey, soccer and even the military. “I am particularly excited with the possibility of driver athletes, in varying age groups, being able to embrace this novel technology,” Cormier said. “There are exciting nuances with the collar that we think could have an important role with regards to helping on the preventive side of concussions, and part of the technology is established on nature’s physiological advantages found in other animals and human beings. “This collar provides a small defined amount

of pressure over the neck muscles which, in effect, engages a ligament to react similarly to what a battle ram experiences. In the battle ram, this band causes a small reduction in blood flow from the brain which creates an internal air bag, which apparently protects this species from brain injuries.” Through Cormier’s work with racecar drivers, he has found that very few have the desire to alter their racing styles, so preventative measures are best taken before the racing begins. “We deal with brain injuries all the time,
ranging from mild to more severe,” Cormier said. “Those predispose you to the longterm effects of brain injury. The diagnosis of concussions is certainly key to taking the racer athlete out of the contest and providing rest. The appropriate rest will help provide longevity in the sport and additionally create an environment whereby transitioning into retirement occurs with their faculties intact. hat began as a tobacco growing business in Cuba over 130 years ago, today has evolved into one of the world’s best cigar manufacturers. Melanio Oliva began growing tobacco in the fertile Pinar del Rio of Cuba in 1886. Melanio’s son Hipolito took over from his father in 1920 eventually passing it on to his son Gilberto Oliva, Sr.
who continued the farming until Castro forced him out. Resourceful, Gilberto became a tobacco broker allowing him to travel and emigrate eventually to Nicaragua. By 1969, Gilberto was growing tobacco once again, this time in Nicaragua whose rich soil and climate was close to that of his homeland. Ten years later the Sandanista revolution in
Nicaragua forced Gilberto to grow his tobacco elsewhere. By 1995, with stability back in Nicaragua, Gilberto moved home to Esteli, and resumed his growing and added cigar making to his portfolio. After the cigar boom in the 90s, Gilberto continued making cigars, but being cash strapped like others after the boom, he was able to push ahead by using all the Nicaraguan tobacco

he had been accumulating. His tobacco forced a change in the Oliva blends to all Nicaraguan tobacco and improved his quality. The company’s offerings improved year after year. The following year, the Oliva Serie G Cameroon made the list of best cigars of the year with a 91. That same year,

In fact, Oliva cigars have remained on Cigar Aficionado’s top 25 cigars of the year for 12 years straight. On top of that, Oliva believes in keeping prices in check.
