5 THE HENDRICK BUNCH IS SLOWLY GAINING GROUND BY JARED TURNER

inless in 14 races this season, Hendrick Motorsports continues to lag behind Stewart-Haas Racing, Joe Gibbs Racing, Furniture Row Racing and Team Penske. Notable improvements have definitely been made, however, with the latest evidence of those improvements coming Sunday at Pocono Raceway where Hendrick drivers Jimmie Johnson and Chase Elliott finished eighth and 10th, respectively. After scoring only one top-10 finish in the season’s first seven races, Johnson has now finished in the top 10 in five of the last seven outings. “My guys kept fighting all day long,” Johnson said after Pocono, where he led for the first time all season. “That was a hard-fought eighth-place finish. We just need to keep improving, but we’re slowly chipping away at it.” Pocono likewise serves as an indicator of Elliott’s slow but steady progression. “We had a good car — I felt like it was much better than where we finished,” he said. 4 ARIC ALMIROLA IS THE MOST IMPROVED DRIVER OF 2018

ooking for the season’s most improved driver, relative to 2017? Look no further than Aric Almirola, who in his first season with Stewart-Haas Racing has already posted as many top-10 finishes — six — as he did all of last season with Richard Petty Motorsports. After coming home seventh at Pocono, Almirola is 11th in the standings and on solid footing to make the playoffs for just the second time in his career. “Man, this is a really challenging place, and I have run so bad here for six years,” Almirola said after notching his first top-10 finish in 12 Pocono starts. “I just came here with an open mind and told myself I was going to study up and pay attention to what all three of my teammates did and try to learn and try to improve every practice. I am really proud of everybody. Another top-10.”

3 THE PLAYOFF PICTURE IS TAKING SHAPE

ith 14 races down and 12 to go before the playoffs begin, more than half of the regular season is now complete. So, who’s a lock of the playoffs, who’s looking good and who’s in trouble? Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, Martin Truex Jr., Joey Logano, Clint Bowyer and Austin Dillon are guaranteed entry into the 16-driver championship field by virtue of having won at least once this season. Meanwhile, if the playoffs began today, the following 10 drivers — all winless — would make it in on the basis of points: Brad Keselowski, Kurt Busch, Denny Hamlin, Kyle Larson, Ryan Blaney, Aric Almirola, Jimmie Johnson, Chase Elliott, Erik Jones and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Currently just outside of the cutoff are Alex Bowman, Paul Menard, Daniel Suarez and Jamie McMurray. TRACK POSITION WAS KING AT POCONO
M
artin Truex Jr. may not have had the best car at Pocono, but what the reigning series champion had was track position when it really counted. Running second when leader Kyle Busch came to pit road for tires under a caution with just over 20 laps to go, Truex stayed on track to inherit the lead. He went on to lead the final 21 laps, taking the checkered flag by a comfortable two-and-a-half second margin over second-place Kyle Larson. On this day, track position — not fresh tires — proved to be the difference-maker. “Honestly, we were all really equal,” Truex said of the front-running cars. “It was a matter of who could get out front. The 4 (Kevin Harvick) and I stayed on tires. We felt like in practice we were really fast on scuffs. Cole (Pearn, crew chief) made a good call to stay out, and once I got in clean air, this thing was a rocket ship.” POCONO REARVIEW: JUNE 4, 2018

1 KEVIN HARVICK AND KYLE BUSCH HAVE COMPANY
T
hanks to a win earlier in the year, Martin Truex Jr. had already solidified his place in this year’s playoff prior to arriving at Pocono. However, Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch had been considered hands-down the championship favorites thanks to their combined nine wins in the season’s first 13 races. But with his victory at the Tricky Triangle, Truex not only joined Harvick and Busch as a repeat winner this season — he also joins the championship conversation. After all, it was just last season that Truex won a series-high eight races on the way to his first championship in NASCAR’s premier series. While the Furniture Row Racing driver has overall not been as dominant in 2018, he’s consistently been the best driver not named Harvick or Busch. Now, with a second win to his credit, Truex is the single biggest threat to a Harvick or Busch championship this season. POCONO REARVIEW: JUNE 4, 2018

yle Larson and Denny Hamlin did a very good thing over the weekend — and it had nothing to do with their performances on the track at Pocono Raceway. Just after leaving a go-kart race on Saturday night, Larson and Hamlin noticed a minivan that had stopped on the side of the road. Instead of continuing on their way, Larson and Hamlin stopped to help. “They were out of fuel, so all we did was really just turn around and go get a fuel jug from the go
kart track, cruise up and put a couple gallons in their car and sent them on their way and led them to a nearby gas station,” Larson said. “It was cool to help out. They had a little daughter, so we just wanted to make sure that they were safe, because I think they called that corner ‘Dead Man’s Corner’, so yeah, we didn’t want to leave them stranded there.” Well-done, boys. Well-done.

For whatever reason, NASCAR refuses to change up its longstanding tradition of racing twice at Pocono within a span of just a few weeks. The reason for this? Well, there simply can’t be a good one, considering Pocono reliably produces some of the dullest racing you’ll find

That number has since nearly quadrupled. “We’re really growing every day, which is really cool to see,” Cox said. “We know that we’ve really just scratched the surface of where we can go with it, because every day we have people inquiring, ‘What is Speed Crate? Where do I sign up?’ And all that stuff. So, we’re still really just being
introduced at this point.” Fans never know exactly what they will find in a Speed Crate. They just know that all products in a Speed Crate come from officially licensed NASCAR partners and manufacturers. “It changes every month,” Cox said. “We don’t do any duplicates. Our big thing is we’re not going to send you the same item twice.” While Speed Crate’s inventory of NASCAR collectibles and paraphernalia is made up mostly of items you might find in souvenir trailers at the track, Speed Crate has expanded this season to include more custom-style merchandise. – a large portion of the items are actually not available at the track and many are custom so they cannot be found any where besides Speed Crate, not online or at the track For example, Alex Bowman — the new driver of the No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet — recently donated some autographed Hero Cards that 10 lucky fans would receive in a future Speed Crate. Now there are 20 active drivers and one retired driver — NASCAR’s 15-time most popular driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Subscriptions are on a month-to-month basis, and subscribers are free to change drivers at any time. Tired of getting Chase Elliott gear, for example? You can switch to Brad Keselowski or someone else with a simple click — and not be charged extra. Speed Crate ships items FebruaryNovember and takes a break in December and January to beef up its inventory for the upcoming NASCAR season. Perhaps the best news of all? Speed Crate is looking to broaden its inventory even more in the months and years to come. “People want die-casts and some other items that aren’t the easiest to get, and we’re working hard to make that happen,” Cox said. “We’re listening to the feedback and making sure we’re kind of adjusting with what people want to see.”

One such area for preventative measures is spinal cord injuries (SCI). The incidence of SCI is highest among persons age 16-30, in whom 53.1 percent of injuries occur; more injuries occur in this age group than all other age groups combined. Males represent 81.2 percent of all report SCIs and 89.8 percent of all sports-related SCIs. Auto accidents are the leading cause of SCI in the United States for people age 65 and younger, while sports and recreation-related SCI injuries primarily affect people under age 29. “In terms of prevention of these types of injuries, there are simple things a person can do like wearing a seatbelt and making sure all passengers are wearing a seatbelt,” Cormier said. “Make sure all car parts are up to date, and the rearview and side mirrors are adjusted to provide more attention to blind spots. Pay attention to the speed limit, and always avoid drunk driving or driving under
the influence of drugs.” If a citizen happens to encounter a car accident in which a driver may have suffered a spinal cord injury, Cormier recommends the ABC steps – airway, breathing, circulation. “When you approach any kind of trauma, it’s important to assess if the person has suffered a neck injury,” Cormier said. “Are they able to move their extremities without any difficulty? Outside of that, it’s important to take in-line cervical precautions by keeping the head in line with the neck and the neck in line with the body. Make sure there are no other red flags.” For people 65 and older, falls are the leading cause of SCI. Cormier offered some preventative steps to avoid these types of injuries. “Preventing these falls is about making sure there are no obstacles in the way at home,” Cormier said. “Make sure it’s well lit. Make sure medication doses are appropriate, and the floor is clear of debris. Don’t overly wax the floors without placing appropriate signs to keep free of traffic.”

He has served as the Medical Director of an active regional Think First Injury Prevention Program and has served as Team Physician to the University of Alabama and the University of Alabama at Birmingham athletic programs. Dr. Hadley has authored over 200 scientific articles and chapters in medical textbooks. He serves editorial roles for Spine, Nutrition, and several foundations, and serves on the Editorial Boards of Neurosurgery (1999 to present) and Journal of Neurosurgery, Spine (2008 to present). “Dr. Hadley has been a primary mentor to me,” Cormier said. “I did the majority of my training directly under him in regards to spinal trauma and deformity. He maintains positions on several editorial boards. I am thankful for and have extreme gratitude for what he’s taught me over the years.”

hat began as a tobacco growing business in Cuba over 130 years ago, today has evolved into one of the world’s best cigar manufacturers. Melanio Oliva began growing tobacco in the fertile Pinar del Rio of Cuba in 1886. Melanio’s son Hipolito took over from his father in 1920 eventually passing it on to his son Gilberto Oliva, Sr.
who continued the farming until Castro forced him out. Resourceful, Gilberto became a tobacco broker allowing him to travel and emigrate eventually to Nicaragua. By 1969, Gilberto was growing tobacco once again, this time in Nicaragua whose rich soil and climate was close to that of his homeland. Ten years later the Sandanista revolution in
Nicaragua forced Gilberto to grow his tobacco elsewhere. By 1995, with stability back in Nicaragua, Gilberto moved home to Esteli, and resumed his growing and added cigar making to his portfolio. After the cigar boom in the 90s, Gilberto continued making cigars, but being cash strapped like others after the boom, he was able to push ahead by using all the Nicaraguan tobacco

he had been accumulating. His tobacco forced a change in the Oliva blends to all Nicaraguan tobacco and improved his quality. The company’s offerings improved year after year. The following year, the Oliva Serie G Cameroon made the list of best cigars of the year with a 91. That same year,

THREE TIME’S A CHARM HARVICK WINS FIRST CUP RACE AT ATLANTA BY BEN WHITE
W
ith the untimely death of seventime Cup series champion Dale Earnhardt at the conclusion of the Daytona 500 on Feb. 18, 2001, RCR Enterprises had to look to a future star being groomed to fill the No. 29 Chevrolets for the Welcome, N.C.-based organization. Kevin Harvick, a native of Bakersfield, Calif., was set to run an entire Xfinity (then Busch Series) schedule for team owner Richard Childress. Instead, Harvick finished 14th in his first start at Rockingham, N.C. on Feb. 26. He was
eighth at Las Vegas on March 4 the following week and led 18 of 325 laps at Atlanta Motor Speedway on March 11. He sealed the deal in his third-career Cup start with a surprise victory over Jeff Gordon of Hendrick Motorsports by 0.006 seconds at the finish. Harvick circled the track on his cool down lap holding three fingers in the air as a tribute to Dale Earnhardt Sr. Fans in the stands were filled with emotion, many of which held up three fingers to honor Earnhardt and salute Harvick for his incredible storybook victory. “I don’t know how you could script it any different,” Harvick said in victory lane. “I’m sure this is going to be pretty difficult for all of us.
