ith six races to go before the 16-driver Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoff field is all locked in, it’s shaping up to be a three-way battle for the 16th and final playoff berth. After seeing his lead over Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Paul Menard shrivel with a 39th-place finish a week earlier at Kentucky Speedway, bubble man Alex Bowman put a little more distance between himself and his closest pursuers at New Hampshire — where he finished 11th, Stenhouse finished 30th and Menard came home 17th. As a result, Bowman’s lead over Stenhouse grew from 19 to 28 points while Stenhouse’s lead over Menard shrank to just a single point. The next driver in the standings, Ryan Newman, trails Bowman by a distant 74 points for the final playoff berth and would likely need to win to make the cut. 4 HENDRICK MOTORSPORTS COULD BE TURNING A CORNER

t’s been a tough year for Hendrick Motorsports, which has yet to put any of its four drivers in Victory Lane. However, New Hampshire offered a ray of hope for the once-dominant organization, as all four Hendrick cars finished in the top 15. Leading the charge was Chase Elliott, who led 23 laps and finished fifth. “I hope it wasn’t dumb luck,” Elliott said. “Hopefully we can keep it rolling, because it’s really nice to be able to go up there and lead some laps. I know it wasn’t the right part of the race, but still, leading laps for us is big compared to what we’ve been doing. I’m proud of the effort. I appreciate everybody’s effort back at Hendrick and the chassis shop and engine shop and Chevrolet and all the folks that are working hard to try to get better. We took a step in the right direction.”

THE FINAL PIT STOP AND RESTART DOOMED ARIC ALMIROLA

s the laps began to wind down in Sunday’s race at New Hampshire, it appeared that all the stars were finally aligning for Aric Almirola to earn his second career Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series victory and first since joining Stewart-Haas Racing for the 2018 season. Unfortunately for the 34-year-old Floridian, it didn’t happen. After holding a healthy lead prior to the final caution, Almirola dropped from first to third with a slow pit stop. Then, on the restart, he spun his tires and lost four more positions. Although able to rally and ultimately finish third, Almirola was far from satisfied. “I’m disappointed,” he said. “You’d think I’d be really excited to run top five, and I’m not. We had the best car — hands-down. There’s no doubt in my mind. We gave it away on pit road, and then I gave it away again on the restart. 2 KYLE BUSCH TOOK KEVIN HARVICK’S AGGRESSIVE MOVE ON THE CHIN

espite being less than thrilled, Kyle Busch stopped short of criticizing Kevin Harvick for moving him out of the way with seven laps to go at New Hampshire. However, Busch would not rule out future retaliation on Harvick. “That’s how they want to race, that’s how I’ll race back, but, you know, it was just a bump,” said Busch, who held on to finish second behind Harvick, who earned a series-high sixth victory of 2018. “I mean, it wasn’t a big deal. He didn’t wreck me or anything like that, so he did it early enough, but he did it way harder and pushed me out of the groove three lanes, and it just takes you so long to recover here that it was just no possible way I could get back to him — and I was slower, anyways. I was in the way, so no harm, no foul.”

1 KEVIN HARVICK HAD NO QUALMS ABOUT ROUGHING UP KYLE BUSCH

arassing the back bumper of Kyle Busch’s Toyota with less than 10 to go at New Hampshire, Kevin Harvick had a choice. He could either attempt to pass Busch cleanly and risk not being able to pass him at all, or he could bump him out of the way. With seven laps to go, Harvick chose the latter option, rooting Busch’s car up out of the groove with a tap in turns 1 and 2. Harvick then cruised, taking the win 1.877 seconds ahead of Busch after snatching the lead away with his aggressive move. Later, Harvick was unapologetic about laying a front bumper to the back bumper of one of his biggest rivals. “I felt like that was my best opportunity to do what I had to do to win,” Harvick said. “I didn’t want to wreck him, but I didn’t want to waste a bunch of time behind him.”

NASCAR LOVES DIRT, AND “SMOKE” HAS PULL BY JARED TURNER

ast week’s annual midweek NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at fabled Eldora Speedway not surprisingly garnered terrific reviews throughout the NASCAR world and particularly on Twitter, where everyone seems to feel the need to

weigh in on everything these days. Now the question becomes whether NASCAR is willing to add a Xfinity or Monster Energy Series race at the half-mile dirt track in Rossburg, Ohio. Track owner Tony Stewart is lobbying for as much, and with Stewart’s clout around the NASCAR world and the motorsports world in general, don’t be surprised if Eldora is hosting all three major NASCAR series in the near future. THE ATTENDANCE AT NEW HAMPSHIRE IS WORRISOME The final laps of Sunday’s race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway were full of drama as two of this season’s heavyweights, Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch, went toe-to-toe for the win and even traded a little paint. If only someone had actually been there to witness it. OK, of course that’s an exaggeration. It’s not that NO ONE was in the stands. But by the thousands of empty frontstretch seats, it appeared that most people didn’t buy a ticket or they were just simply unwilling to wait out the rain, which delayed the start of the race by more than three hours. Either way, attendance

That number has since nearly quadrupled. “We’re really growing every day, which is really cool to see,” Cox said. “We know that we’ve really just scratched the surface of where we can go with it, because every day we have people inquiring, ‘What is Speed Crate? Where do I sign up?’ And all that stuff. So, we’re still really just being

introduced at this point.” Fans never know exactly what they will find in a Speed Crate. One such area for preventative measures is spinal cord injuries (SCI). The incidence of SCI is highest among persons age 16-30, in whom 53.1 percent of injuries occur; more injuries occur in this age group than all other age groups combined. Males represent 81.2 percent of all report SCIs and 89.8 percent of all sports-related SCIs. Auto accidents are the leading cause of SCI in the United States for people age 65 and younger, while sports and recreation-related SCI injuries primarily affect people under age 29. “In terms of prevention of these types of injuries, there are simple things a person can do like wearing a seatbelt and making sure all passengers are wearing a seatbelt,” Cormier said. “Make sure all car parts are up to date, and the rearview and side mirrors are adjusted to provide more attention to blind spots. Pay attention to the speed limit, and always avoid drunk driving or driving under

the influence of drugs.” If a citizen happens to encounter a car accident in which a driver may have suffered a spinal cord injury, Cormier recommends the ABC steps – airway, breathing, circulation. “When you approach any kind of trauma, it’s important to assess if the person has suffered a neck injury,” Cormier said. “Are they able to move their extremities without any difficulty? Outside of that, it’s important to take in-line cervical precautions by keeping the head in line with the neck and the neck in line with the body. Make sure there are no other red flags.” For people 65 and older, falls are the leading cause of SCI. Cormier offered some preventative steps to avoid these types of injuries. “Preventing these falls is about making sure there are no obstacles in the way at home,” Cormier said. “Make sure it’s well lit. Make sure medication doses are appropriate, and the floor is clear of debris. Don’t overly wax the floors without placing appropriate signs to keep free of traffic.”

hat began as a tobacco growing business in Cuba over 130 years ago, today has evolved into one of the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best cigar manufacturers. Melanio Oliva began growing tobacco in the fertile Pinar del Rio of Cuba in 1886. Melanioâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s son Hipolito took over from his father in 1920 eventually passing it on to his son Gilberto Oliva, Sr.

who continued the farming until Castro forced him out. Resourceful, Gilberto became a tobacco broker allowing him to travel and emigrate eventually to Nicaragua. By 1969, Gilberto was growing tobacco once again, this time in Nicaragua whose rich soil and climate was close to that of his homeland. Ten years later the Sandanista revolution in

Nicaragua forced Gilberto to grow his tobacco elsewhere. By 1995, with stability back in Nicaragua, Gilberto moved home to Esteli, and resumed his growing and added cigar making to his portfolio. After the cigar boom in the 90s, Gilberto continued making cigars, but being cash strapped like others after the boom, he was able to push ahead by using all the Nicaraguan tobacco

he had been accumulating. His tobacco forced a change in the Oliva blends to all Nicaraguan tobacco and improved his quality. The company’s offerings improved year after year. A SCORCHING HOT VICTORY RUDD TAKES A DIFFICULT CHECKERED FLAG AT MARTINSVILLE BY BEN WHITE

n Sept. 28, 1998, Ricky Rudd, driver of his own No. 10 Rudd Performance Motorsports Ford, knew he was in trouble early into the NAPA Autocare 500 at Martinsville Speedway. For 3 ½ hours, he battled 160-degree heat inside his car while dealing with a faulty driver’s cooling unit. He was doused with water by his crew during pit stops, and it helped to make his difficult situation tolerable. As the cockpit grew hotter, Rudd radioed crew chief Bill Ingle to have him search for a

driver that had been sidelined to stand by as his relief driver. Rudd stayed in the car and sealed the deal through sheer determination to finish the race. He led four occasions for 198 laps, including the final 96 before finally completing his mission over second-place Jeff Gordon. Rudd extended his streak of going to victory lane at least once in 16 consecutive seasons.
