NASCAR PLAYOFFS How the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs Work

S

ixteen drivers qualified for the 2018 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, with entry based on having a win or their position in the standings following the 26-race regular season. While baseline point totals are reset equally heading into the playoffs, a driver earns five playoff points for every race win, and one playoff point for every stage win, during the regular season. Drivers can continue to amass playoff points once the playoffs commence, adding to their regular season totals. A driver’s playoff points carry over to each new round – except the Championship Round – provided he is still championship-eligible. The driver leading the point standings at the end of the regular season starts the playoffs with an additional 15 playoff points. In fact, the top-10 drivers in points after the regular season are all awarded playoff points on a descending scale. The number of playoff drivers in contention for the championship decreases after every three playoff races, from 16 to start the playoffs; 12 after playoff Race No. 3; eight after playoff Race No. 6; and four after playoff Race No. 9. A win by a championship-eligible driver in any playoff race automatically clinches the winning driver a spot in the next round. The positions for each round that aren’t filled based on wins in the previous round are filled based on point totals at the end of the previous round.

HOW THE NASCAR XFINITY SERIES PLAYOFFS WORK

The first three races of the playoffs are known as the Round of 16 and are held this year at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Richmond Raceway and the ROVAL at Charlotte Motor Speedway, respectively. The ROVAL, a new 17-turn road course where the field of championship-eligible drivers decreases to 12, is the first of three playoff elimination races. The next three races make up the Round of 12 and are held at Dover International Speedway, Talladega Superspeedway and Kansas Speedway, respectively. At Kansas, the playoff field is whittled to eight. Martinsville Speedway, Texas Motor Speedway and ISM Raceway make up the Round of 8, which culminates with four drivers leaving Arizona in title contention. The champion is the highest finisher among the four title contenders in the Championship 4 race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

HOW THE NASCAR CAMPING WORLD TRUCK SERIES PLAYOFFS WORK THE NASCAR CAMPING WORLD TRUCK SERIES IS IN its third season with an elimination-style playoff format, and the Truck Series playoffs utilize a format different from those used in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series and the NASCAR Xfinity Series. Consisting of seven races, the Truck Series playoffs feature eight drivers and two elimination rounds. A win during the regular season guarantees a driver entry into the Truck Series playoffs, as long as that driver is in the top 30 in series points. The first round, called the Round of 8, consists of races at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (a road course), Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway. If a driver wins a race

04

POLE POSITION 2018

in the Round of 8, the driver automatically advances to the next round. The remaining available positions that have not been filled by winners are filled based on points. Each driver who reaches the Round of 6 – consisting of races at Martinsville Speedway, Texas Motor Speedway and ISM Raceway – needs to win to automatically advance to the Championship 4 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The remaining available positions that have not been filled by winners are filled based on points. The drivers in the Championship 4 will have their point totals reset and made equal, and the highest finishing Championship 4 driver in the season finale at Homestead is champion.

THE 2018 NASCAR Xfinity Series playoffs feature 12 drivers and two elimination rounds, with four drivers competing straight up for the title at Homestead-Miami Speedway. A win during the regular season guarantees a driver entry into the playoffs, provided the driver is in the top 30 in points. The rest of the playoff field is set based on points. The first round, called the Round of 12, consists of races at Richmond Raceway, the ROVAL at Charlotte Motor Speedway and Dover International Speedway. All drivers start with equal points, plus any additional playoff points earned for race wins and stage victories in the regular season. If a driver wins a race in the Round of 12, he automatically advances to the next round. The remaining available positions that have not been filled by winners will be filled based on points. Each driver who advances to the Round of 8 (Kansas Speedway, Texas Motor Speedway and ISM Raceway) will start the round with equal points – plus any playoff points accumulated during the regular season or the Round of 12. Drivers who win in the Round of 8 automatically advance to the Championship 4. The remaining positions that have not been filled by winners are based on points at the end of the Round of 8. The highest finishing Championship 4 driver at Homestead is the champion.

NASCAR PLAYOFFS 5 Reasons to Love the NASCAR Playoffs For many NASCAR fans, the playoffs are undoubtedly the most exciting time of the year. For the drivers in pursuit of a championship, no time is more stressful. Stressors aside, there are many reasons to love the playoffs – especially in NASCAR’s premier division, the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. Here are the top five reasons:

1

THE SCHEDULE SHAKEUP: The Monster Energy Series’ Round of 16 has an allnew look this season. Out are Chicagoland Speedway (which hosted the playoff opener from 2011-17), New Hampshire Motor Speedway (which lost its fall race date) and Dover International Speedway (now the first race in the Round of 12). This year, the Round of 16 consists of races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Richmond Raceway and a new 17-turn road course formally dubbed the ROVAL at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

06

POLE POSITION 2018

2

THE CHAMPIONSHIP 4: It’s one race featuring four championship contenders all on equal points footing, with no bonus points up for grabs. The first driver among the four finalists to cross the finish line when the checkered waves at HomesteadMiami Speedway is the Monster Energy Series champion. Does it really get any better than this? NASCAR knocked a home run with its implementation of a winner-take-all Championship Race in 2014. Expect 2018 to be no exception.

3

TALLADEGA, AKA ‘THE WILD CARD’: Want intense racing? Try a race at wild, wacky and notoriously unpredictable Talladega Superspeedway situated smack dab in the middle of the Monster Energy Series playoffs. Talladega, a 2.66-mile track widely considered the most treacherous of all venues on the Monster Energy Series tour, is the second race in the Round of 12 and has consistently proven to be a game-changer in terms of which drivers ultimately advance to the Round of 8.

4

THE ELIMINATION RACES: If you like witnessing aggression, tune in or buy a ticket for any of the three elimination races in which the Monster Energy Series playoff field will be reduced by four drivers. This year’s elimination races are being run at the ROVAL at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Kansas Speedway and ISM Raceway, respectively. All three tracks are poised to crush some drivers’ dreams while propelling others further down the path to a possible championship.

5

THE SURPRISES: The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs usually produce a major surprise or two. In 2014 – the first year of the elimination-style format and winner-takeall Championship Race – Ryan Newman came one position short of the championship, despite going the whole season without a win. The following year, Martin Truex Jr. – then considered a major underdog – surprised almost everyone by reaching the Championship 4 with a single-car team. Who will be the biggest surprise of this year?

TO WIN THE MONSTER ENERGY NASCAR CUP SERIES TITLE

1

KEVIN HARVICK: Kevin Harvick started the year red-hot, piling up five victories in the first 12 races. He’s since cooled off, but not a lot. At press time, the 2014 Monster Energy Series champ ranked second in the standings and had six wins — tied with Kyle Busch for most in the series. While no one is a lock for the Championship 4, Harvick comes pretty close.

14

POLE POSITION 2018

2

KYLE BUSCH: Handily beaten by Kevin Harvick in the first month of the season, Kyle Busch mashed the proverbial throttle in early April by going on a three-race winning streak, and he barely lifted over the remainder of the regular season. By far the most dominant of the Joe Gibbs Racing Toyotas, Busch stands an excellent chance of capturing his second Monster Energy Series championship.

3

MARTIN TRUEX JR.: On pace to match or even surpass the numbers he laid down in last year’s championship season, Martin Truex Jr. has enjoyed another stellar Monster Energy Series campaign with his Denver-based Furniture Row Racing team. What’s the biggest difference between 2017 and 2018 for Truex? Last season, he was the clear championship frontrunner. This season, he’s one of three.

4

CLINT BOWYER: Enjoying a renaissance kind of season, Clint Bowyer is finally back to his frontrunning ways after five years in the NASCAR wilderness. With wins in the first half of the season at Martinsville and Michigan, the second-year StewartHaas Racing driver proved that if anyone can hang with the “Big Three” of Harvick, Busch and Truex Jr., it’s probably him.

5

JIMMIE JOHNSON: So Jimmie Johnson hasn’t had a Jimmie Johnsonlike season – big deal. He’s still a seven-time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion, he still has arguably the best crew chief in the sport – Chad Knaus – and he certainly hasn’t forgotten how to drive. If Johnson’s team can provide him with better cars in the playoffs than he had in the regular season, the sky is the limit.

Arguably NASCAR’s best when it comes to pure driving talent, Kyle Busch has done nothing to diminish that reputation this season. Equipped with a fast car almost everywhere he’s been, Busch has been virtually unbeatable at many tracks and at least in contention at most others. If Busch makes it back to Homestead as part of the Championship 4, he and his team, led by crew chief Adam Stevens, will be extremely tough for anyone to beat. “They out-execute what their car is capable of every single week,” teammate Denny Hamlin said.

Prior to this year, Kevin Harvick had never won more than five races in a Monster Energy Series season. The veteran driver needed just over half of the schedule to eclipse that total. Yeah, it’s been that kind of campaign for the 2014 Monster Energy Series champion, whose nickname, “Happy,” has certainly been an appropriate moniker. If Harvick can avoid a major mishap in one of the elimination rounds, he’s all but assured of making the Championship 4. And if he can ascend NASCAR’s mountain for the second time, 2018 will no doubt go down as his greatest season.

3

COLE CUSTER: A promising young driver with a lot of talent, Cole Custer has enjoyed a superb sophomore season in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. The downside: At press time, the Stewart-Haas Racing driver was winless in the season’s 20 races to date. The good news for Custer was that he ranked second in the standings, trailing only fellow youngster Bell.

4

DANIEL HEMRIC: From the end of the season’s fourth race through the conclusion of the 20th, Daniel Hemric dropped out of the top five in points only one time. Though winless in nearly two full seasons of NASCAR Xfinity Series competition as of press time, the 2017 Championship 4 qualifier has the potential to hang around and make the championship battle a little more interesting.

With veteran crew chief Jeff Hensley calling the shots, second-year Camping World Truck Series driver Grant Enfinger has displayed overall improvement from his rookie season of 2017 when he finished 11th in the standings. With 14 races in the books, Enfinger was third in the standings on the strength of a stellar average finishing position of 8.2. Although Enfinger didn’t win in 2017 and, as of press time, had not won in 2018, he does know how to get to Victory Lane, having won at Talladega in 2016 while running just an eight-race schedule.

PRIMARY SPONSORS: ALLEGIANT AIRLINES, ISM CONNECT MANUFACTURER: CHEVROLET TEAM: GMS RACING

When Johnny Sauter joined GMS Racing in 2016, many expected him to experience a transition period with his new team. Instead, Sauter became an immediate frontrunner and went on to score three wins on the way to a championship. Continuing on that success in 2017, Sauter won four times and came up just one position shy of being a back-to-back champ. The next best thing for Sauter would be two championships in three years. That goal is both attainable and likely if he performs in the playoffs as he did in the 2018 regular season.

Matt DiBenedetto MOVING ON UP

P

rior to joining NASCAR’s premier series in 2015, Matt DiBenedetto dabbled in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, drove the full 2011 season in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East and spent most of 2009 in K&N. Over those two seasons, he earned three victories— positioning himself to move up through the ranks. DiBenedetto spent his first two Monster Energy Series seasons with BK Racing before joining GoFas Racing in 2017. As of press time, he owned four top-10 finishes.

Competing for a small team against NASCAR’s leading organizations, the efforts of Matt DiBenedetto and GoFas Racing have not been in vain. Five top-20 finishes in the first 19 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series races of 2018 was a major accomplishment for DiBenedetto and his bunch, who finished a season-best seventh in the July race at Daytona International Speedway. It wasn’t the first time DiBenedetto has been a factor at a restrictor-plate race, however. “It’s just an opportunity where it evens everybody out a little bit, so we can position ourselves right and then be there at the end,” DiBenedetto said. “The big pack evens out a lot of things, so we can have a good run here.” After performing so well in his most recent trip to The World Center of Racing, DiBenedetto was ecstatic. “I guess that was probably one of the craziest races I’ve ever taken part of,” he said. “I’m glad we survived and we seem to always position ourselves in a spot to be up front and competing for the win at the end of these speedway races at Daytona quite often. We’ve got that down pat and I’m really, really glad we got a good run for [our sponsor] Zynga Poker. They’re a huge part of our team. They’ve stepped up and helped us a ton this year, so I’m pretty proud of that.”

MAKING VIDEOS

DiBenedetto has become a pro at making short but effective videos for Twitter. Whether to praise his sponsors, court new ones or applaud his team, DiBenedetto seems to have the magic touch.
