NASCAR OVERHAULS THE 2021 SCHEDULE Many months ago, NASCAR promised its fans that 2021 would see more changes in one year than NASCAR has seen in decades. This week NASCAR fulfilled that promise, for better or worse. In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp takes us through all the exciting (and worrisome?) changes in the 2021 schedule. Originally the 2021 schedule was supposed to be released on April 1. There were even reports that the schedule might be released 0 0 4
in segments. But here we are, and the entire schedule has been dropped at once. And NASCAR has certainly come through with their new tracks promise. Some of the changes have fans excited across the board, while others have some fans questioning whether it will work. From road courses to dirt courses to brand new locations, Eric has the full breakdown of the schedule in today’s episode of Out of the Groove!

THINGS TO WATCH AT TALLADEGA W
elcome to the “wild card,” also known as Talladega Superspeedway, which on Sunday afternoon will host the second of three races in the NASCAR Cup Series’ Round of 12. Of the 10 tracks that host a playoff race this season, none presents a bigger question mark or creates more stress for the participants than the 2.66-mile highbanked Talladega oval, which has been the site of some of NASCAR’s most exciting and scariest moments down through the years. Following are five things to watch for leading up to and during Sunday’s YellaWood 500. BY JA RED TURNER

A REAL OPPORTUNITY FOR A SPOILER
I
f there’s any track on the remainder of the NASCAR Cup Series schedule where a non-playoff driver could steal a win, it’s Talladega. The notoriously unpredictable Alabama track has played host to some huge upsets over the years (witness Bobby Hillin Jr. in 1986 and David Ragan in 2013) due to the unpredictable nature of the racing here. Sunday should be no different. “Talladega is wild, so many variables,” said Matt DiBenedetto, a non-playoff driver whose future in the sport beyond 2020 is currently uncertain. “You can either get wiped out or you can have a solid day. Hopefully, luck is on our side.” Rookie John Hunter Nemechek, who like DiBenedetto is still seeking his first Cup win, finished a career-best eighth at Talladega in the spring. “Superspeedways continue to be our best shot at winning as an organization,” Nemechek said. “I’m really excited to go back to Talladega this weekend. We had a really strong run when we were there earlier in the year.”

THE ‘BIG ONES(S)’
V
irtually no race at Talladega goes off without at least one occurrence of the “Big One,” the moniker given to the familiar and often frightening multi-car wrecks closely associated with the high-speed, close-quarters racing at this high-banked Alabama track. With so much at stake this weekend for the playoff drivers, expect lots of risk-taking in the draft. And, of course, the more risks that are taken, the greater the chance of major accidents. “I’m just going to do what I’m told to do,” said reigning series champ Kyle Busch, one of the playoff drivers needing to make up ground in the standings. “I’ve been in front and been a part of a wreck and I’ve been riding in the back and been taken out, too. There’s really no place that’s safe. With this race being the second race of the round, you have to try and run up front and hope that you don’t have some bad luck and just bring home a solid finish.”

A MOSTLY CAREFREE KURT BUSCH
O
ne of the biggest upsets of 2020 came last weekend when Kurt Busch used well-timed pit strategy and a little bit of luck to earn his first win of the year. The victory couldn’t have come at a better time for Busch, as he became the first driver to lock up a spot in the Round of 8. Now, while other playoff drivers are sweating bullets this weekend at Talladega and next weekend on the ROVAL at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Busch and his team don’t have to worry about points but can relax in knowing they will be title contenders when the Round of 8 commences at Kansas Speedway on October 18. “Honestly, Kurt is obviously really good at Talladega, but anything can happen, and going to the Charlotte ROVAL, you think you would be alright, but you never know, right?” said Busch’s crew chief, Matt McCall. “Now really we’re just racing for stage wins and the race wins until we get to Kansas.”

LOTS OF 2021 SCHEDULE CHATTER
rguably the biggest story of the 2020 season came about on Wednesday when NASCAR announced a plethora of blockbuster changes to the 2021 Cup Series schedule. While the changes are too numerous to really analyze in this limited space, the biggies were as follows: The addition of Nashville, Road America and Circuit of The Americas to the schedule; a second race for both Atlanta and Darlington; swapping fabled 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway with the lesser known road course at IMS, stripping Texas of a points race but replacing it with the All-Star Race, which is traditionally held at Charlotte; doing away with one of the two races traditionally held at Dover and Michigan; eliminating Kentucky and Chicagoland from the schedule altogether; and turning Bristol into a dirt track for its annual spring race. In total, the 2021 schedule will feature six road courses — double the traditional number. Head spinning yet? NASCAR executives are already promising other, yet-to-be announced big changes for the 2022 schedule.

BOYS GOING FOR BROKE
W
ith Kurt Busch the only one of the dozen remaining championship-eligible drivers locked into the Round of 8, the remaining 11 playoff drivers have various degrees of incentive to hold nothing back on Sunday at Talladega — where a win for any of these drivers would automatically punch their ticket into the next round. Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin are undoubtedly the least worried of the bunch, having piled up enough playoff playoffs to both be virtual locks for the next round regardless of what happens at Talladega. But the separation between Brad Keselowski (the next driver currently in position to advance) and Kyle Busch (the first driver on the wrong side of the cutline) is just 16 points. Meanwhile, Busch is a mere nine points behind bubble man Alex Bowman and 11 points ahead of Clint Bowyer, who is 20 points to the bad of the cutoff spot and just seven and 12 points, respectively, ahead of Aric Almirola and Austin Dillon.

RECAPPING JIMMIE JOHNSON’S NASCAR CAREER
■■ Jimmie Johnson and crew chief Chad Knaus pose with their wives, Chandra and Brooke after winning the O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 on April 9, 2017.
BRINGING THE HEAT JIMMIE JOHNSON SCORED A HARD-EARNED WIN AT TEXAS IN APRIL 2017 BY JA RED TURNER
I
n the spring of 2017 at Texas Motor Speedway, Jimmie Johnson brought the heat — both literally and figuratively. The figuratively being that he captured the O’Reilly Auto Parts 500, scoring an impressive seventh career NASCAR Cup Series victory at the 1.5-mile track in Fort Worth. The literally being that Johnson emerged from his No. 48 Chevrolet at day’s end feeling overheated and in desperate need of fluids on an atypically warm April day. “I had heat issues,” said Johnson during the post-race winner’s press conference. “I got out of the car and I was really hot, and I felt much better there and was on the right path, I felt like. And then I was doing an interview, and I felt my back lock up and then my chest and my arms, and I was starting to cramp everywhere. That was an immediate trip to the infield care center to get some IVs. I had three bags of IV and am feeling a ton better now.” Coming into the weekend, Johnson didn’t feel so good about

his chances of getting a win — despite his history of success at TMS. The seventime NASCAR Cup Series champion’s uncertainty stemmed primarily from his awareness of a repave the track underwent prior to its spring 2017 race. Johnson took the checkered flag just .34 seconds ahead of runner-up Kyle Larson, one of the series’ younger drivers. “I’m really surprised that we won here,” said Johnson, who started 24th on the grid and led only 18 of the race’s 334 laps. “I feel like whenever there’s a repave, I think it doesn’t fit my style. I suffer more than anyone. I also feel like it kind of lends itself to the new guys coming in, the brave ones, the ones that haven’t hit many walls yet, and to go out and score one for the old guys today feels pretty good.”

Ray Alfalla BY ROB TIONGSON

Throughout the season, Rob Tiongson interviews various drivers in the world of NASCAR. Today, he catches up with Ray Alfalla, four-time eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series champion. ▶▶ Since the summer, you scored that important victory at Atlanta and logged five top-10 finishes with the Playoffs kicking off soon. How confident do you feel about your chances with contending for your fifth eNASCAR iRacing Coca-Cola Series championship? There’s three intermediate tracks after the Roval, so we should be competitive. ▶▶ In your 11 years competing in major eNASCAR racing, how incredibly competitive has it been given this year’s package that mirrors real life Cup Series racing? This year and last year have closed the field up quite a bit. You need a fast car more than ever to do well. ▶▶ Overall, it’s been an awesome year for the Virtual Racing School team with your teammate Bobby Zalenski picking up two wins at Daytona last month. How proud are you of his strong season and how closely do you both work together so that VRS can contend for the championship? We actually don’t share setup info, but we always race each other clean. Things are looking good to win the team championship. ▶▶ As the most successful eNASCAR driver in series history, do you foresee iRacing being a platform to serve as a launching pad for future NASCAR drivers like we’ve seen with William Byron? It could be, but eNASCAR on its own can be a series to make a name and a living in.

IN THE HOT SEAT ▶▶ In some ways, you remind me a bit of Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson with your approach and humility. Which drivers do you idolize or emulate in terms of your work ethic and mindset? Jimmie is the easy answer. Getting to work with him earlier this year during the break made me realize that he’s very much like the competitors in the Coke Series; winning is the most important thing. ▶▶ Balancing your racing efforts with your day job with the postal service, how do you manage your time so you’re remaining sharp but also enjoying your life, even during these challenging times? Teammates! We have a great group of friends putting in time and we all share that data to ease the overall workload. ▶▶ It’s no secret that NASCAR has worked hard to expand upon its diversity efforts. How encouraging is it to see the series focus and devote its resources and attention towards a more inclusive sport for all? It’s very important. Being an immigrant myself, it’s always nice to feel welcomed. 0 2 2
▶▶ Let’s say that a Hollywood studio approached you to make a biopic about your life and racing career. Which actor would you recruit to portray you on the big screen? Hugh Jackman since everyone says I look like Wolverine. ▶▶ What’s perhaps the most insightful advice that a fellow racing colleague has provided you that’s kept things in perspective for you? Any time I’m struggling or complaining, people have reminded me that some drivers wish they could be a part of the series and might never make it. It puts things into perspective. ▶▶ Let’s imagine a new fan is watching the latest eNASCAR race that you’re competing in and they’ve seen you on the track. Give me three reasons why that can should cheer for you and choose you as their favorite eNASCAR driver. Best looking car, most wins, and only multiple times champion!

BRANDON HAYSE KETTELLE ENJOYS MOMENTOUS TALLADEGA WIN BY ROB TIONGSON
I
f there’s a perfect way to describe racing at Talladega, the legendary Richard Petty put it best, in general with NASCAR racing, when he said, “The best that you can do on any given day is to put yourself in a position to win and let circumstances dictate the outcome.” Clearly, today’s generation of racers, even those in the eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series take this saying to heart, especially Brandon Hayse Kettelle. After last week’s strong sixth-place finish at Las Vegas, the Clint Bowyer Racing driver from Cape Coral, Fla. entered Round 16 of the season with unwavering confidence. However, the 23-year-old had 36 of his “ready for primetime” comrades ready to take on the always thrilling Talladega Superspeedway for the 94-lap race. Moreover, Tuesday night’s race decided the final Playoff spots

with the final three spots still up for grabs before the green flag. Entering the night, Ryan Luza, Ray Alfalla, and Logan Clampitt held the last golden tickets to eNASCAR postseason glory. While the draft always serves as the great equalizer, qualifying towards the front remained quite important for the field of 37. In this case, Christian Challiner and Jimmy Mullis flanked the front row while Corey Vincent, Michael Conti, Jake Nichols, Zack Novak, Jarl Teien, Clampitt, Kettelle, and Nick Ottinger rounded out the top-10. Certainly, Ray Alfalla (16th)

ESPORTS and Ryan Luza (36th) had their work cut out for them but these champions were prime for a Tuesday night tussle at Talladega. Once the field got the green flag to kickstart the regular season finale, Challiner led from his pole position spot but he was one of 14 different leaders, a sign that this was a competitive race. Despite two rounds of green flag pit stops and the three to sometimes four wide action throughout the race, it was caution free for the first 86 laps. Along the way, points leader Zalenski, Mullis, Novak, Kollin Keister, Dylan Duval, Graham Bowlin, John Gorlinsky, Malik Ray, Chris Shearburn, and Clampitt led laps. Mullis, who entered the night looking to go from the outside looking in for the playoffs with Richmond Raceway eSports, showcased his dominance by leading 27 laps, seemingly in command of the race like Cole Trickle beyond the fact that both drive a No. 46 car. On Lap 77, Clampitt’s postseason hopes took a hard hit when he tangled with Garrett Lowe. As a result, 0 2 6
Clampitt hit the wall, damaging his No. 99 Toyota Camry. Although this incident didn’t result in a caution, Duval made a “he did what” kind of save on the frontstretch that would’ve made Al Michaels equally in shock as he was during Antonio Freeman’s Monday Night Football heroics in 2000. In spite of Duval’s impressive save, Clampitt’s promising evening took a truly tougher turn for the worse when he brushed up with Gorlinsky and Nichols on Lap 87, resulting in Clampitt and Nichols crashing hard into the wall and prompting the race’s only caution. Prior to the restart, Bob Bryant, Clampitt’s Burton Kligerman eSports teammate, found himself in the lead and ready to score his first Coke Series win. Leading the final restart, Bryant seemed destined to win the race, fending off the hardchargers and bump-drafting attempts of his rivals. All told, teamwork made the dream work for two Ford Racing teams when Clint Bowyer Racing’s Kettelle worked with Jim Beaver eSports’ Eric J. Smith to charge their way to the front. During the final lap, the lead pack was three-wide, inches apart with the right drafting partner deciding who’d win it all at the 2.66mile superspeedway. Despite running in the middle lane, Kettelle,

the beneficiary of Smith’s hardy bump drafts, mustered enough speed to prevail at Talladega by just 0.054 seconds. Before crossing the stripe, multiple drivers barrel rolled and careened hard against the wall adjacent to the dogleg, with the front 13 zipping past the stripe while drivers from 14th towards the rear of the pack either drove through the carnage or were a part of the virtual sheet metal mayhem. Scoring his first ever Coke Series win, Kettelle took time to observe his victory before saying, “Honestly, after last week at Vegas, I knew a win was right around the corner. So, getting that first win at a plate track just felt right. I have four top-fives in eight starts at the plate tracks, so I knew it was bound to happen one of these days!” Playing his cards right at a track where the dealer often doles out not so wonderful 0 2 8
combinations, Kettelle also took the time to thank his faithful drafting partner-in-crime. “I think the only thing keeping me calm was knowing Eric J. Smith was behind me and was committed to pushing me there at the end,” Kettelle observed. “I couldn’t have done it without him!” Despite Kettelle not being in position for the playoffs, he prevailed over Smith, Bryant, Zalenski, Mullis, Ottinger, Michael Guest, Conti, Novak, and Keister, all who rounded out in the top-10. With Round 16 concluding the regular season, Zalenski and his cohorts prepare for Round 17 of the eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series season at the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL on Tuesday, October 13th, 2020, at 9:00 PM ET/8:00 PM CT. NASCAR.com and iRacing’s Twitch channel will live stream the race, the kickoff to the Playoffs.

JEFF GORDON CELEBRATES LAST LAP VICTORY AT TALLADEGA BY ROB TIONGSON
F
or all of the talk that Dale Earnhardt, Sr. still receives for his mastery of superspeedway races, it’s easy to forget that Jeff Gordon is the king of Daytona and Talladega. Although Earnhardt’s superspeedway victories were impressive, regardless of how his car performed, Gordon learned everything that he knew at these big tracks from “The Man in Black.” On Sunday, October 7th, 2007, Gordon, one of the NASCAR Cup Series championship contenders of that season, hoped his experiences and lessons from “The Intimidator” would serve him well despite starting in the 34th spot. While it was a bit of a dropoff from his pole position-to-victory feat on April 29th, 2007, Gordon and his comrades contended with a completely different beast. Indeed, the UAW-Ford 500 at Talladega 0 3 6

Superspeedway was the first major superspeedway race with the “Car of Tomorrow,” a drastic departure from the sleek, aerodynamic stock cars prevalent in NASCAR since 1995. With a boxy body that featured a front splitter with braces, a larger greenhouse, and the distinct rear wing, NASCAR attempted to provide stock cars that seemed futuristic but provided safety and peace of mind for competitors all around. No matter how fans perceived the “Car of Tomorrow” in 2007 or today, it was certainly a turning point in NASCAR history with the UAW-Ford 500 serving as a true test of this car’s abilities versus its sleeker predecessor. Regardless of the cars, the title fight was quite close with Jimmie Johnson leading the way with Gordon just six markers behind while Clint Bowyer lurked a not-so-distant third by 14 points. On the strength of five wins, 14 top-fives and 23 top-10 finishes, Gordon was determined to truly realize his “Drive for Five” campaign

that kicked off in 2002. Typically a hardcharger who mixes it up with the leaders, Gordon and his No. 24 Pepsi Chevrolet Impala team decided to play it safe in the early going. Hovering outside of the top-30 for a balance of the race, the action was quite intense around Talladega with 41 lead changes among 21 different racers. On this afternoon, Denny Hamlin, Tony Stewart, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., and Ryan Newman seemed quite strong although Sadler and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. encountered problems respectively on Laps 175 and 136. Trouble ensued on Lap 145 in Turn 4 when the “Big One” collected David Reutimann, Kyle Busch, David Ragan, Robby Gordon, Denny Hamlin, Paul Menard, Matt Kenseth, Dave Blaney, Jamie McMurray, Bobby Labonte, and Brian Vickers. Following Ken Schrader’s crash in Turn 4 on Lap 154, the race had two final cautions for Kyle Petty’s accident in Turn 3 on Lap 163 and a mini one involving Greg Biffle, Elliott Sadler, Michael

ROB IS RACIN’ Waltrip, and Tony Raines on Lap 177. Once the carnage ceased at Talladega, the field, led by Newman, resumed their mini wars for the race win on Lap 181. Suffice to say, Newman wasn’t able to hold the top spot as Jimmie Johnson took the lead on Lap 183. Lurking not too far in the distance was Gordon, seemingly playing possum against his competitors. Come to think of it, Gordon made like Neo in The Matrix in the final eight laps. Working the draft to near perfection, Gordon found himself up to second spot, ready to pounce and attack for the win. Approaching the backstretch and Turn 3 on the final lap, Gordon decided to make an aggressive pass for the victory with a checkers or wreckers approach. Clearly, he wasn’t in the business of points racing during that afternoon. Running behind Johnson on the inside line, Gordon suddenly veered towards the outside line to get a hardy push from then two-time 0 4 0
NASCAR Cup Series champion Tony Stewart. Using that bump draft to his advantage, Gordon swung back to the low line and hugged it like no tomorrow. Crossing the stripe, Gordon scored his latest come-frombehind win of his storied career season by prevailing over Johnson, Dave Balney, Hamlin, Newman, Casey Mears, Kurt Busch, Tony Stewart, Tony Raines and Reed Sorenson rounding out the top-10. Pumping his fist quite enthusiastically in the car, Gordon provided some rubber donuts before bringing his car to Victory Lane. Based on his excitement and reaction, Gordon seemed to appreciate his latest feat. “I have no idea!” Gordon exclaimed to ESPN’s Allen Bestwick. “This guy right here (crew chief Steve Letarte) builds an awesome racecar and has put together a heckuva race team. We laid in the back and we didn’t want to have to do it that way. But this car, there’s a lot of unknowns, it’s hairy out

ROB IS RACIN’
there, and we just wanted to play it safe until it counted.” Incredibly, Gordon, while having a great car in race trim, decided to take advantage of a moment that’s not always present for a come-from-behind win. “What I don’t understand is how I ever got by my teammate (Johnson) because I was there and behind him. I got a couple of pushes,” Gordon observed. “When I think the 12 or the 2 were on the outside of me, I really was just kind of stuck there. But when they got three wide, I said this is my opportunity. I got a push from the 22 and I went with the momentum.” Utilizing the draft to perfection, Gordon walked fans through his winning pass on the last lap. “Luckily, when I got high and Jimmie tried to block me, the 20 was there and had nowhere to go,” he recalled. “He drilled me and he’s the one who pushed me to the front. That’s what you’ve 0 4 2
ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: OCTOBER 1, 2020
gotta do. You’ve gotta put that rear bumper in front of those other guys’ bumpers at the right time. Amazing day, man.” Retaking the points lead by nine markers over Johnson, when the circuit returned to their hometown race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Gordon duplicated his winning ways from Talladega with his sixth victory of the season. Unfortunately, Gordon’s back-to-back wins would be the last of the decade and the start of his winless drought that concluded with a dominant victory at Texas Motor Speedway in the spring of 2009. Despite an incredibly strong season with six wins, 21 topfives and 30 top-10’s, it wasn’t enough for Gordon to claim his fifth Cup title as Johnson reeled off four straight wins from Martinsville to Phoenix, virtually doing enough to nab his second Cup championship over Gordon by 77 points. Ultimately, Gordon, who won his final superspeedway race of his career, made his ultimate victory at Talladega as a truly memorable one for this weekend’s edition of “Memory Lane.”

THE NEW SCHEDULE SURE IS SOMETHING This week Danny B Needs a Minute is here to talk us through the 2021 schedule changes. As a native Nashville resident, Danny sure has a lot to be excited about for himself, both with the new locations and the updates to the classic tracks. What does Danny think about all the new tracks and changes next year? Before that though, Danny does take us through some of the disappointing losses of the schedule next year. This includes the loss 0 4 4
of Chicagoland as well as Kentucky, likely due to some combination of low attendance, low viewership, or unspecified issues with the facilities themselves. How do the new locations compare to the ones we’re losing in 2021? That’s not all. Danny also gives us his take on the addition of so many new road courses, plus the controversial addition of a dirt race to Bristol. Find out what Danny has to say in this week’s episode of Danny B Needs a Minute!

DRIVER Q&A
COREY LAJOIE AIMS TO END 2020 ON A HIGH NOTE BY JOSEPH WOLK IN
Corey LaJoie is nearing the end of his time at Go Fas Racing. Now, he is preparing to start a new chapter in his life. One of NASCAR’s most relatable drivers believes the best has yet to come, and his 25th-place average finish with an underfunded team supports that sentiment. The bittersweet goodbye is the first step. ▶ HOW HAS YOUR YEAR BEEN THUS FAR? “It’s been a little bit weird with Covid throwing a wrench in everybody’s plan. We can go back to the Daytona 500 and how that deal happened with Ryan Newman. The year started off pretty crazy, but also fairly well with a top 10. We had our hopes up fairly high with newer Stewart-Haas cars entering our stable. There’s a noticeable difference in drivability, but the overall speed hasn’t showed up. We’ve had probably double the amount of mechanical failures this year than we did last. It’s frustrating at times. But overall, it’s a good opportunity for me to gain experience and set myself up for the next step I’m going to take in my career.” ▶ IS IT BITTERSWEET TO SAY GOODBYE TO YOUR FIRST FULLTIME TEAM? “We’ve had several good runs and the guys who work there are awesome. There’s a good chance I’ll be working with some of them in the future whenever we go to different places. There were some 0 4 6
ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: OCTOBER 1, 2020
things that happened this year that led to us mutually parting ways. It’s a good spot for me to have grown my partners and for him to grow his. I felt like I needed to take a step up competitively, whether it be moving down to the Xfinity Series and winning races or moving up a bit in the Cup grid if an opportunity presents itself. It was a good spot for me to learn and grow for two years.”

DRIVER Q&A
▶ WHAT MAKES YOU SO RELATABLE FOR FANS? “I’ve been doing less and less of working on the cars because there’s guys who have responsibilities. They don’t necessarily want me touching it and possibly messing it up. On the flip side of that, doing the podcast with SiriusXM fill-ins helps get my name out there as much as I can. You can only do so much on the racetrack with the handicap of equipment from start to finish. I think, in some cases, I put my foot in my mouth by being too blunt. A lot of the reasons why people like me are that I’m real and I’m a normal guy. I have a dog, a 2006 pickup 0 4 8
truck, a six-month old and I get puked on and change diapers like everyone else.” ▶ WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR? “We’ve had several mechanical failures this year, which is frustrating. It’s expected with a smaller team because we put more mileage on them. I want to have a couple more good runs. Talladega, we always run well there. There’s a couple of short tracks like Martinsville and Phoenix, so hopefully we can put a couple of good runs together. That’s hopefully what I can do the track and let that speak for me when it comes to looking for a job.”

OFFICIAL NASCAR MEMBER’S CLUB Q&A
NASCAR IN THE BLOOD: LIKE MOTHER, LIKE DAUGHTER BY DA N GUT TENPL A N
R
hode Island resident Jaclyn Roberts grew up watching NASCAR with her father. Almost 30 years later, she has passed down the love of the sport to her 11-year-old daughter, Allena. “She has to go to every race with us,” Roberts said. Roberts’ 2020 race schedule has been limited to one visit to New Hampshire Motor Speedway in August. She recently joined ROAR for an interview about her experience with the Official NASCAR Members Club. ▶ HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A MEMBER OF THE OFFICIAL NASCAR MEMBERS CLUB? “It’s been four or five years.” ▶ HOW DID YOU BECOME A FAN OF THE SPORT? “My Dad used to watch it, and then I started watching it with him. I haven’t stopped.” ▶ WHICH DRIVERS HAVE YOU ROOTED FOR OVER THE YEARS? “I was always a huge Jeff Gordon fan. Now, I’m more of a fan of Chase Elliott -- anybody with Hendrick Motorsports.” ▶ HAVE YOU BEEN TO ANY RACES THIS YEAR? “We were able to attend the race in New Hampshire. It was different. Everything was different. The masks and temperature checks … what you were able to bring in … the fact that it was one day and not a whole weekend. Still, it was a lot of fun. Being able to go to a race this year was pretty cool.” ▶ HAVE YOU HAD ANY SPECIAL EXPERIENCES AS A MEMBER OF THE ONMC? “A couple of years ago, during one of the September races, they offered a special from the store when you entered a code. You could pick a track for the ultimate VIP experience. I won that, so my husband and I did a ride-around in one of the cars. We got to go to the driver meetings. We were able to be on pit road for the entire

race. That was an experience in itself. We were on Victory Lane for the race.” ▶ WHO WON? “Kyle Busch. I’m not a fan.” ▶ HOW WILL YOU CASH IN ON YOUR MEMBERSHIP THIS SEASON? “I’ll order a couple of things over the next few weeks. One of my daughters is a big Jimmie Johnson fan. I’ll order small stuff for her and my husband for Christmas. I’m hoping to get back to the VIP experience next year.”

NASCAR 2021 SCHEDULE RELEASE
FIVE DECADES IN THE MAKING:
NASCAR INTRODUCES THREE NEW TRACKS, TWO NEW LAYOUTS TO 2021 NASCAR CUP SERIES SCHEDULE HISTORIC SLATE INCLUDES THREE NEW ROAD COURSES AND FIRST DIRT RACE IN HALF A CENTURY
N
ASCAR today announced the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series schedule, a historic slate that includes the introduction of three new racetracks – and new layouts at two iconic venues – to the sport’s top level. Not since 1969 has NASCAR added this many new venues to its premier series schedule. The 36-race slate includes races at three new road course layouts, and the first Cup Series dirt race in more than 50 years. The road course at Circuit of the Americas (May 23) joins the schedule for the first time, Road America (July 4) returns for the first time since 1956 and, after a thrilling debut in the NASCAR Xfinity Series in 2020, the Cup stars will race on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course in 2021 (Aug. 15). The high banks of Bristol Motor Speedway will transform into a dirt track for a NASCAR Cup Series race on March 28, the first

premier series race on dirt since Sept. 30, 1970 (North Carolina State Fairgrounds in Raleigh, N.C.). And as previously announced, NASCAR returns to the Music City with a race at Nashville Superspeedway on June 20, which will kick off the NBC Sports portion of the season. “We developed the 2021 schedule with one primary goal: Continue to take steps to create the most dynamic schedule possible for our fans,” said Steve O’Donnell, NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing development officer. “Extensive collaboration between NASCAR, the racetracks, race teams and our broadcast partners allowed NASCAR to create what promises to be an exciting 2021 schedule of races.” In addition, NASCAR announced the NASCAR Cup Series All-Star Race’s return to a high-speed 1.5-mile track in 2021, as the annual starstudded event moves to Texas Motor Speedway on June 13 for the first time in its 36-year history.

NASCAR 2021 SCHEDULE RELEASE
NASCAR will open its Cup Series season with two consecutive races in Florida. As is tradition, the season will kick off with the running of The Great American Race – the DAYTONA 500 – at Daytona International Speedway on Sunday, Feb. 14 live on FOX before heading south to Homestead-Miami Speedway on Sunday, Feb. 21. The series will also double down on a pair of familiar venues in markets threaded deep with historical NASCAR ties and passionate fanbases. Cars will hit the track at Darlington Raceway for the first time on Sunday, May 9 and again to kick off the Playoffs on Sunday, Sept. 5 while Atlanta Motor Speedway will host NASCAR’s premier series on Sunday, Mar. 21 and Sunday, July 11. After an overhaul for the 2020 season, the only change in the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs will be a swap of dates between Texas and Kansas in the Round of 8. Wholly unpredictable venues – Bristol Motor Speedway (Sept. 18), the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval (Oct. 10) and Martinsville Speedway (Oct. 31) – will once again serve as the cutoff races in 2021. Phoenix Raceway culminates the 10-race Playoffs slate as host of the NASCAR Cup Series Championship Race for the second consecutive year. NASCAR Cup Series races in 2021 will once again air on the FOX and NBC family of networks. Start times and specific networks will be announced at a later date. Schedules for the 2021 NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will also be announced at a later date. 0 5 4
