TALKING THROUGH HAILIE DEEGAN’S TRUCK DEBUT In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp takes us through some of the latest signings and contracts from silly season. We have what we can call a journeyman driver in Daniel Suarez, and an exciting new ride for Hailie Deegan in the truck series. Eric takes us through all the nitty gritty details. For Daniel Suarez, he’ll be taking over the No. 99 with new team Trackhouse Racing, owned by former driver Justin Marks. The team will have a 0 0 4
technical alliance with Richard Childress Racing, so driving Chevy’s naturally. Eric takes us through what this team has to prove next year out on the track. Plus, he takes us through the career of Hailie Deegan, giving us the context behind her new ride in the truck series, and what she’ll have to accomplish as she steps onto the national series stage. All that and more in this week’s episode of Out of the Groove!

THINGS TO WATCH AT ROVAL T
hought this past weekend’s “wild card” race at Talladega Superspeedway was wacky? Well, buckle your seatbelt and hold on tight. Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series elimination race on the notoriously treacherous ROVAL at Charlotte Motor Speedway will undoubtedly provide a fitting climax to what has been a relatively chaotic and unpredictable Round of 12. While Kurt Busch and Denny Hamlin have punched tickets to the next round, the other remaining playoff drivers still have work to do. Following are five things to watch for during or leading up to the Bank of America ROVAL 400. BY JA RED TURNER

He walked the line with Johnny Cash. For the last 34 years of his life, Johnny Cash enjoyed a deep friendship with Billy Graham. They often fished together, prayed together, and proclaimed the Good News of Jesus Christ to thousands together. Their Gospel message transcended culture, age, politics, and race—and touched music legends, sports heroes, movie stars, presidents, and people just like you. A LITTLE EXTRA BOUNCE IN ALEX BOWMAN’S STEP
I
f Alex Bowman seems extra joyful this weekend, there’s a good reason why. While the NASCAR world learned months ago that Bowman would be back with Hendrick Motorsports in 2021, no one knew prior to Tuesday that Bowman would be switching from Hendrick’s No. 88 car to the organization’s flagship No. 48 car next year. While the ill-informed might view this changeover as mostly inconsequential, it’s significant for the simple fact that Bowman will be taking over a car that has captured a record-tying seven championships and at least 83 races with Jimmie Johnson at the helm. Moving with Bowman from the No. 88 to the No. 48 team will be crew chief Greg Ives. “I can’t put my respect for Jimmie into words,” Bowman said. “To me, the No. 48 team’s legacy is about winning but also how you go about your business. It’s leadership, confidence, work ethic, being a professional and holding yourself to a higher standard.”

ROAD RAGE OF THE HIGHEST ORDER
N
ASCAR Cup Series drivers and teams don’t possess a huge notebook of data for the ROVAL at Charlotte Motor Speedway, having competed just twice on the highly technical, now 17-turn 2.28-mile course, which combines elements of the track’s road course portion with elements of the more familiar 1.5-mile Charlotte Motor Speedway quad-oval. Both races previously held on the ROVAL have produced no shortage of close on-track battles and driver errors, which together have led to some rather wild crashes. Expect no different this weekend, especially with 10 drivers duking it out for six remaining spots in the upcoming Round of 8. “This is what the playoffs are all about,” said Clint Bowyer, one of the drivers looking to solidify a berth in the next round. “It’s going to come down to the final laps on the ROVAL and hell is probably going to break loose. Somebody is going to be really happy, and a lot of folks are going to be really mad.”

TWO DRIVERS FIGHTING FOR THEIR FUTURES
W
ith Silly Season in full swing and several drivers, including, most recently, Matt DiBenedetto having recently buttoned up their plans for 2021, at least two relatively well-known drivers remain in limbo as to the team they will be competing for next season and beyond. Those two drivers are Erik Jones (Joe Gibbs Racing) and Ty Dillon (Germain Racing), who are lame ducks with their respective organizations. “As far as the (next) opportunity, I have nothing yet,” said Dillon, whose team is suspending operations at season’s end. “Hopefully, this inspires some more talks and more sponsorship opportunities. It’s getting to a tough place in the sport where you have to bring money with you as far as sponsorship. A little bit goes a long way right now. … I want an opportunity next year to continue to prove what I can do.” While a strong outing this weekend might not guarantee a ride for Jones or Dillon, it certainly couldn’t hurt their prospects.

oing into Sunday’s elimination race on the ROVAL, no one is under more pressure or feeling more desperate to make something happen than the four drivers on the wrong side of the cutline for advancing to the Round of 8. Those drivers are Austin Dillon (21 points behind the cutline), Kyle Busch (-21), Clint Bowyer (-37) and Aric Almirola (-48), and all four need to perform at a high level this weekend to have any hopes of keeping their championship hopes alive. For Almirola, whose deficit is the most significant of the four drivers playing catchup, the objective couldn’t be any more cut and dry. “We have to win,” Almirola said on a conference call with reporters earlier this week. “Nothing else really matters at this point. It makes it very clear and very straightforward. We don’t have to really worry about what anybody else does; we just have to focus on trying to call the right strategy for the race.”

A CONTINUATION OF CHASE ELLIOTT’S ROAD COURSE MASTERY
A
long with being the NASCAR Cup Series’ most recent winner on the ROVAL, Chase Elliott has enjoyed more overall success on road courses than anyone over the past couple of seasons. Elliott’s victory in August on the Daytona International Speedway road course was his third consecutive road triumph and matched a streak of road course wins set by NASCAR Hall of Famer Tony Stewart from 2004-2005 (Jeff Gordon holds the record for most consecutive road course wins with six between 1997 and 2000). Elliott owns a total of four career road course victories, tying him with Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. for the most among active drivers. Elliott has led a series-high 204 laps on road courses since the beginning of 2018 and holds the best overall average finish (9.6) on road courses among active drivers. To say Elliott is a favorite to win on Sunday is an understatement; he’s an overwhelming favorite to return to Victory Lane on the ROVAL.

RECAPPING JIMMIE JOHNSON’S NASCAR CAREER
■■ Jimmie Johnson celebrates in victory lane with crew chief Chad Knaus after winning at Auto Club Speedway on March 20, 2016 in Fontana, California.

JIMMIE JOHNSON DELIVERED A CLUTCH PERFORMANCE AT FONTANA IN THE SPRING OF 2016. BY JA RED TURNER
K
evin Harvick has long been nicknamed “The Closer” for his proclivity to come on strong at the end of races and take the lead when it matters most. On March 20, 2016 at Auto Club Speedway, however, Jimmie Johnson gave Harvick a dose of his own medicine. Lining up second to Harvick on a restart with two laps to go, Johnson executed a bold move to pass Harvick on the race’s next-to-last lap. Johnson then held on to take the checkered flag .772 seconds ahead of his challenger from Stewart-Haas Racing. The performance marked Johnson’s sixth and final victory at Auto Club Speedway — the site of his first career NASCAR Cup Series win — and gave the Hendrick Motorsports driver his 16th top-10 finish in 22 races at ACS, the Southern California track not all that far from his hometown of El Cajon, California. “Just a fun race,” Johnson said. “I mean, I love the rules package, how the car drives. When we come to a track like we have here, an old surface, it’s so much fun to drive the race

car. So much the driver can control, setting up passes, looking for lines. Really just a ton of fun. “Started 19th and worked our way forward quickly. I really felt like midpoint of the race on, we were one of the top two or three cars. The longer the run went, the better we were.” Johnson led just 25 of 205 laps, compared to Harvick, who spent a race-high 142 laps out front. But on this day, it was Johnson who drove more like “The Closer” when the field lined up for the restart with two laps remaining. “Had a great restart,” Johnson said. “Great driving car. I got a great launch off the bottom of Turn 2. I was just praying I would hear ‘clear’ as I turned into Turn 3. Eventually I did. At that point, I felt pretty good about bringing it home with just one more lap to go.”

DRIVER Q&A
ERIK JONES IS MAKING THE MOST OF HIS LAST RACES AT JGR BY JOSEPH WOLK IN
There are only a few weeks left in Erik Jones’ time with Joe Gibbs Racing. The Toyota organization is the only one he’s ever been part of, and now it’s time for a fresh start. But before the two-time Cup Series winner departs from team No. 20, he wants to say goodbye with at least one more triumph to thank coach Joe Gibbs for everything he’s done for the Michigan native. ▶ WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO HAVE SOME MOMENTUM HEADING INTO THE LAST PART OF THE SEASON? “Going back to Bristol, we ran third and then Vegas was eighth, followed by second at Talladega. We’ve had three really good runs. I thought that at Bristol and Talladega, we had a shot to win both of those races. It’s encouraging. We want to win before the year’s over. We have some good races coming up. That momentum will help us for sure.” 0 2 0
▶ WHAT HAS THIS TEAM BEEN MISSING THAT YOU’RE STARTING TO PICK UP ON NOW? “It’s tough to say. I think some of it was adjusting to not having practice. There were some other issues we had to sort out as far as the pit crew and limiting mistakes. Things started smoothing out and we got used to not having practice. Some of the tracks that we’re coming back to for the second time gives us notes to go off of, and we can make adjustments to make our return to those tracks even better.”

DRIVER Q&A ▶ WHAT CAN YOU DO AS A DRIVER TO IMPROVE? “There’s stuff you can do every week to get better. I continue to analyze and see what I can make better from my seat, whether it be getting better on restarts, adjusting the car, better on pit road that you continually get better with behind the wheel. Hopefully, I can continue to work on that and move to another team to get better with whatever the next home is going to be.”

Bob Jenkins BY ROB TIONGSON
0 2 4
Throughout the season, Rob Tiongson interviews various drivers and personalities in the world of NASCAR. Today, as a preview of a special series in 2021, he interviews Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame motorsports announcer Bob Jenkins. ▶▶ It’ll be the 40th anniversary of the first onair NASCAR race that you called at Rockingham on ESPN alongside Eli Gold and Ned Jarrett as the pit reporter. As a broadcaster and racing fan from Indiana, what do you recall about this day in 1981 and bringing stock car racing to new TV audiences across the country? I was not very educated on NASCAR racing. Growing up in Indiana, I was an open wheel fan. I grew up really watching sprint cars and midgets. In fact, my father-in-law raced midgets. Now, this was before I met his daughter who became my wife (Pam). But still, I went to a lot of races with him and with my family to sprint car races more than any. And I always considered my hometrack (to be) Eldora which is now being used by NASCAR Trucks. But Eldora Speedway was probably right about an hour away from where I grew up in extreme East Central Indiana. And so it was a relatively short trip over there. I was an open wheel fan and I loved the Indy 500. And when I got the call to do NASCAR racing, I really had very little knowledge of who had done what. Of course, I knew the big names like Petty, Yarborough, Pearson, and all of those guys. But as far as a history of the sport, I knew very little. I would watch them on television before I started doing television. But I just didn’t have the background in NASCAR that I had in open wheel racing so I was kind of scared.

IN THE HOT SEAT Eli helped a lot. I don’t remember very much about that day but I do remember doing the stand up, which is the open to the show, which was me and him standing together and welcoming everybody. But other than that, I don’t remember much about the race. I have no idea who won. And another thing that I recall was that after maybe just one, maybe two or three races, I was taken off of NASCAR and missed a few races and then was put back on NASCAR. And I really didn’t know what the reason for my dismissal for a while was. I don’t know if it was ESPN or NASCAR but anyway, it worked out and I started doing them regularly as the time went on. ▶▶ It’s comforting to hear! NASCAR has been my main motorsports series but I’ve always taken a fascination with other racing series. Even with technology changing, if you’re willing to take on challenges and you love racing, you have a good chance of succeeding as you have with your career. When I went to work for ESPN, the first race that we did was a sprint car race. We did a couple of sprint car races in late 1979. And in 1980, we started branching out a little bit. But I did, for ESPN, when I first worked for them in 1979, I did drag racing and called quite a bit of off road races and just about every form of motorsports because it’s true. I love any kind of motorsports whether it be in a straight line, oval, or over the terrain, I loved it! I can learn to love or learn to know about a particular form of motorsports just by working on it and trying to know a lot about it. So, I’m glad it worked out that way because I spent quite a few years doing NASCAR racing and really enjoyed it. ▶▶ While it is a common courtesy and etiquette to be impartial, after all of these years, who were some drivers who you marveled or respected from your perspective? Jeff Gordon because we met when he was 15 years old and he was driving a sprint car on the other side of Florida from Daytona. We had gone down to Daytona to do some stories regarding Speedweek 0 2 6

IN THE HOT SEAT and the month of February. On an off night, we decided to go over to a track called East Bay which is near Tampa. And we watched Jeff Gordon drive a sprint car. From that moment on, I knew he was going to be a superstar. I was so glad that he moved to Indiana. When he moved to Brownsburg, he would just stop in the office (of ESPN Speedweeks, a weekly show during the 1980s and 90’s) every now and then and sit down and talk with us. And I thought, “Wow, what a great kid. And I know that he is going to have a name that we will remember for a long time.” And that’s the way it turned out to be. So I’m very glad I was around when Jeff was racing. One of the thrills that I got was calling his win at the Brickyard 400 (in 1994). That pleased me a lot. I never really wanted to and never really felt I did have favorites as far as who I wanted to win. At the end of the race, if everyone was in good health and nothing major had happened, I was pleased. I think he was probably one. I’ve always not wanted to become good friends with race drivers. And I think this applies more to IndyCar than NASCAR because I always felt that if I got real close to a race driver and he and I were really good buddies and then something would happen to him, I would be devastated. Well, that’s exactly what happened because I became very close with Dan 0 2 8
Wheldon. He joined our broadcast booth doing IndyCar races and when he lost his life at Las Vegas, it really hurt me. And I think that’s one of the minor contributing factors as to why I wanted to get out of racing itself. I also never really cared a hoot about who was winning in terms of cars. But I remember receiving letters from a lady. The person writing the letters that were sent to me after almost every race I did, there were words in there that I would never have used and I don’t think a lot of sailors would use. I mean, she was just throwing around. We couldn’t believe the language that she was using! But she accused me of being a Ford fan and expressing my love for Ford on the air. I couldn’t believe it! I don’t care who in the world or what kind of car wins a race for goodness sake! But boy, she let me have it on a lot of occasions back then.

▶▶ Oh, goodness! But I guess you must’ve done something right to have a reaction, even if it wasn’t the best, honest kind. Now, I do remember Speedweek and it was such a great show that spurred my interest as a journalist. How cool was it to work on that show and bring those features to race fans? I love to write, I really do. I still do a little bit of it, not for publication, but I just do it for myself. Of course, I was asked to write the foreword to Tony Stewart’s book which I loved. Doing Speedweek was fun in that you could create stories, shoot video, and make little video stories, or packages as we called them. Also, I loved to do studio work. I really enjoyed doing Speedweek. It was something that I had never really done before and I’ve got a lot of good out of that show. I’m so glad that I was able to do it through its run which ended, in my estimation, too soon. 0 3 0
But, it was fun while it lasted. I was quite busy. We used to take Mondays off if we didn’t have a race. But a lot of the time, we’d do Speedweek on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and then tape the show on Friday. And then I would leave Friday night to do a NASCAR race. And that got to be quite a schedule for me. When it ended, I was able to relax and enjoy traveling a little bit more than I did when I was having to do it. But, I’m glad Speedweek was there and I’m glad it lasted as long as it did and that I was a part of it. Travel was always the worst thing for me. When you don’t have to do it, you think, “Man, it’d be cool to jump on a plane on Friday to go to a race and come back on Sunday night or Monday morning.” Well, yea, it was three or four times, and then it got old and it got to be a job which I didn’t want it to be. If I didn’t have the travel associated with it, I think I would’ve enjoyed my job a whole lot more.

Alex Bowman is now the driver of the No. 48 car for Hendrick Motorsports, Jimmie Johnson’s iconic car, and will include his faithful sponsor 0 3 2
Ally Racing. This certainly answers a lot of questions and clears up a lot of speculation when it comes to silly season, and Danny B gives his perspective as a longtime fan of Bowman’s. What did it take for Alex Bowman to reach the heights of driving such a legendary car? And what does he need to prove now that he has it for the foreseeable future? OFFICIAL NASCAR MEMBER’S CLUB Q&A
READY TO MAKE UP FOR LOST TIME BY DA N GUT TENPL A N
S
cott Fitzgerald may be the rare NASCAR fan who was able to get out to three races this year despite the COVID restrictions at tracks. However, he’s not ready to chalk it up as a fulfilling year. The New Hampshire native had plans to attend two more. “We wanted to go to the double-header at Pocono, and that got cancelled,” Fitzgerald said. “We had plans to go to the race at Watkins Glen, and that was canceled. Now, when we retire, we want to take our camper and follow the circuit for a full year to make up for lost time.” Fitzgerald has been a member of the Official NASCAR Members Club for five or six years, in his estimation. He joined ROAR to talk about his experience with the club.
▶ WHAT HAS THIS YEAR BEEN LIKE FOR YOU? “We live 45 minutes for Loudon, N.H., so we got to go to that race. They had about 12,000 fans, and we did the socially distant thing. To be honest, it was one of the best New Hampshire races I’ve seen, and I’ve gone there for the last 20 years.” ▶ WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR BEST MEMORIES AS A MEMBER? “We had the VIP experience in New Hampshire. We got up there in the morning, got hot passes and went for a tour of the garages. They took us on Martin Truex’s hauler with the crew guys. They showed us how everything worked. We roamed around on our own, and then went for a pace car ride. We were allowed to go in the drivers meeting, and we sat next to the drivers and owners. Then we had access to go on pit road during live stops. At the end of the race, we went to Victory Lane. That was one added bonus. We stood in Victory Lane with Kyle Busch and got pictures with him and the trophy. It was a pretty unbelievable day.” 0 3 4
ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: OCTOBER 5, 2020
■■ ONMC member Scott Fitzgerald and wife Robin
▶ ARE YOU A FAN OF KYLE BUSCH? “I was a Dale Jr. fan for his whole career. When he retired, I had to find a new driver. I like how Kyle Busch wins races and his no-BS attitude. Some people don’t like him because of that. He says it like it is. He’s not a vanilla driver. He’s having a hard year, but the whole year is wacky with no practice or qualifying. That’s something he needs to win races, and he’s not getting it this year.” ▶ WHO GOES TO THE RACES WITH YOU? “Me and my wife, Robin, go to all of the races together. This year, we went to Las Vegas preCOVID. Then we went to New Hampshire. Then we went to Daytona at the end of August. We got to go to three, and we typically go to about five races per year.”

MARK MARTIN OUTLASTS COMPETITION WITH CHARLOTTE WIN BY ROB TIONGSON
B
efore the fall Charlotte race became a gritty NASCAR Playoffs race on the ROVAL layout, it presented chaos with the UAW-GM Quality 500 as it did in 1998. Compared to the late spring, dusk to night conditions prevalent in the Coca-Cola 600, the 500 in October resulted in track conditions that changed more frequently than Brett Favre’s mind in 2008. Moreover, it was a 334-lap sprint for hometown bragging rights for NASCAR Cup Series teams. In all fairness, for the 1998 edition of the race, the championship was Jeff Gordon’s to lose as he held a firm grip on his third driver’s title in his sixth full-time season. However, Mark Martin and his No. 6 Valvoline/Cummings Ford Taurus team weren’t giving up.

For starters, Martin and crew chief Jimmy Fennig kept themselves in the fight against Gordon and his crew chief Ray Evernham. In fact, Martin reeled off six wins to Gordon’s 10, combining to win over 57 percent of the races contested up until Round 28 of 33 in 1998. On the other hand, Martin, who was just 67 points behind Gordon after Round 23 in New Hampshire, lost 132 points in the Southern 500 due to engine problems. While Gordon (literally) cashed in on another million dollar victory, Martin and his team were relegated to a 40thplace finish. Losing 67 more points, even with his victory in Round 26 at Dover, prior to the Charlotte race weekend, Martin and his Roush Racing crew needed a true pickmeup. Perhaps Lady Luck provided some kindness to Martin and his team when they scored the outside pole position in qualifying while Gordon struggled to the 26th fastest time, his worst qualifying effort in Charlotte at the time.
ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: OCTOBER 5, 2020
Moreover, Martin had to like his chances heading into the race. After all, he won on two prior occasions (1992 and ‘95). For number lovers, perhaps the odds were in his favor with his fall wins separated by just three years. Then again, it would be foolish to dismiss Gordon despite his terrible qualifying effort and apparent struggles in the fall Charlotte race. Mustering finishes of fifth, 28th, 30th, 31st, and fifth, Gordon wasn’t dismayed by his 19.8 average result in this event. Once race day arrived at Charlotte Motor Speedway, the mood was somewhat exciting given the semantics surrounding Martin and Gordon’s tremendous seasons. And of course, this was the race in which the famous “Batman Vs. Joker” cars made their infamous appearance. As the field got up to speed for the start of the 500-miler, Martin scooted past pole sitter Derrike Cope for the lead on Lap 1 before Cope assumed command for the next six laps. In typical Martin fashion, the Batesville, Ark. native bided his time in the opening circuits around the 1.5-mile speedway. Meanwhile,

MEMORY LANE Gordon climbed up to 20th by Lap 31 before leaping to 14th just eight laps later. By Lap 57, Gordon entered the top-10 while Martin continued to lead the way. Clearly, both drivers had race-winning rides on this temperamental track. It would truly turn into a mano a mano race between these juggernaut drivers. On Lap 76, Gordon got by Martin for the lead, enjoying the number one spot for seven laps before Martin reassumed command of the race. Not even a long red flag for water leakage along the backstretch cooled the intense on-track battles between Gordon and Martin, especially once the race resumed. Although Gordon and Martin were their customary, competitive selves, the Pontiacs of Ward Burton and Ernie Irvan entered the picture as genuine contenders. Burton led from Lap 91 to 125 while Irvan enjoyed a 12-lap stint at the front of the pack. Other than Brett Bodine’s brief stint in the lead during a 0 4 8
caution ensued by a Turn 2 crash involving Johnny Benson, Jr., Wally Dallenbach, Jr., and Rick Mast, Gordon found himself back in the lead on Lap 196 before Martin roared his way back to the catbird’s seat on Lap 201. Just in the nick of time, Martin missed the Lap 202, Turn 2 crash that wiped out the cars of Bobby Labonte, Rusty Wallace, Dale Earnhardt, Terry Labonte, Ricky Rudd, Jeremy Mayfield, Kyle Petty, Mike Skinner, Sterling Marlin, Kenny Irwin, Jr., Geoffrey Bodine, and Jeff Burton. The incident also involved Gordon but just by a whisker. In spite of missing the bulk of the crash, Gordon’s left rear quarter panel was crinkled up by a spinning Ricky Rudd. Although the damage was quite minimal compared to those eliminated in the Lap 202 fracas, Gordon’s handling went away faster than Tom Brady bolting from New England to Tampa Bay. Ultimately, the box score would make it seem like a smooth Sunday drive for Martin even after the Lap 267 crash

for Jerry Nadeau in Turn 2 and Irvan’s tangle with Dick Trickle in Turn 2 six laps later. With nightfall around the corner in Concord, N.C., Martin found himself pondering about a determined Ward Burton who ran a strong second in his silver No. 22 MBNA Pontiac Grand Prix. Lurking just within a second from Martin’s speedy Taurus, Burton was determined to return to Victory Lane since his maiden win at Rockingham in October of 1995. As valiant and determined as Burton was in the closing laps, Martin was just too much on this afternoon as he took his seventh win of 1998, besting Burton by just 1.11 seconds with Jeff Burton and Bobby Hamilton taking third and fourth. “Well, we ran pretty good today,” Martin said to TBS pit reporter Steve Byrnes. “But we 0 5 0
were really lucky. We should’ve been in that wreck that the leaders were in. I saw a shiny spot going into the corner and I knew I’d lose the lead if I went high. But I decided to not go through it and I went high and they all wrecked behind me. So that was lucky. “And this old moody racetrack and my Valvoline/Cummings team, they had good pit stops, good adjustments, but there were some cars that could’ve beat us today under the right circumstances because of the mood swings of the racetrack. But they all had troubles. There’s a lot of cars here in this race (today) that could’ve made a race out of it. And Ward (Burton) did and he made a real fine run at it.” All things considered, Gordon, who placed fifth, had to feel relieved after a close call from the Lap 202, Turn 2 chaos.

“We got some damage on one of those wrecks,” Gordon observed. “Somebody got into the back of us and the car just wasn’t the same after that. We were really strong coming up through there. We went up and we were able to battle with Mark for the lead. And I thought, ‘Hey, this is going to be a great battle right here for the championship and a great battle for the race.’ Once we got that damage in the back, the car was just loose the rest of the day. We couldn’t get it tight enough. Luckily, it finally came back to me in the last 30 laps of the race and I was able to get back up there in fifth.” Coming up just one position short of the win, Burton, drenched in sweat from a grueling, but well earned runner-up, said, “Well, the guys did a great job for me. I’ll tell you what, my hats off to them. We had a good pit stop when we needed to. All my MBNA team is just working real good together right now. We beat everybody but that one car and I wanted that one car so bad. But, that’s a good start.” In the end, Martin’s valiant challenge for the title would take two large hits following his seventh win of 1998 at Charlotte. Just one week later at Talladega, a Lap 137 crash relegated 0 5 2
ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: OCTOBER 5, 2020
Martin to a 34th place finish while Gordon clinched a runner-up. Combined with Gordon’s 11th win of the year in the first nighttime 400-miler at Daytona and Martin’s 16th place finish, Gordon widened his lead to 358 points with just three races left in the year. Taking his 12th win of the season at Rockingham, N.C., Gordon clinched his third championship in grand fashion while Martin, despite placing second at Phoenix and fourth at Rockingham, pondered about another runner-up points finish in his NASCAR Hall of Fame career. Sports fans may recall the homerun race of 1998 in baseball but the title fight between Gordon and Martin, despite the margin, was a clinic of pure NASCAR domination during a transitional time for stock car racing. With these two drivers eventually becoming teammates in 2009, it’s just one of the many incredible parallels that might get mention in a future edition of “Memory Lane.”

Children’s Hospital in Charlotte helped design the paint scheme by imagining their own superhero powers: Zackery, age 14, and Sofia, age 12, both chose the power of teleportation; Christian, age 12 selected invincibility; and Kyler, age 12, selected the power to be invisible. With COVID-19 limiting the traditional Racing for a Miracle at-track experiences, the paint scheme was unveiled in a victory-lane style burnout amidst a cloud of white smoke. The children will be honorary JGR team members for the race, with their cardboard cut-outs
