ELLIOTT CHASING HISTORY AT CHARLOTTE In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp takes us through all the wet and wild action of this weekend’s race at the Charlotte Roval. While Chase Elliott’s victory was predicted by many, there were still plenty of twists and turns, no puns intended, for Eric to talk us through. Yes, this was the first NASCAR Cup race to be run in the “wet,” that is with rain tires on a rain soaked track. And while the drivers didn’t 0 0 4

have much experience in these conditions, they still managed to make it all the way to the competition caution before the yellow flag came out. Eric takes us through how it’s possible. Plus, Eric gives us the skinny on the playoffs after this weekend. Who’s in and who’s out now that they’re done with Charlotte? Eric has that, plus he puts it all on the patented Groovy Gauge, on this week’s episode of Out of the Groove!

LESSONS LEARNED AT ROVAL T

o no one’s surprise, including the few thousand fans who were permitted to be in attendance, Sunday’s playoff elimination race on the seemingly always treacherous ROVAL at Charlotte Motor Speedway proved to be quite the entertaining and unpredictable affair. In the end, though, it was fan-favorite Chase Elliott going to Victory Lane for a second consecutive season at the highly technical road course on a day when the playoff field was whittled from 12 drivers to eight. Following are five lessons we learned in the Bank of America ROVAL 400. BY JA RED TURNER

Their Gospel message transcended culture, age, politics, and race—and touched music legends, sports heroes, movie stars, presidents, and people just like you. THE RAIN THREW A WRINKLE IN EVERYONE’S DAY

A

fter an especially soggy NASCAR Xfinity Series race on Saturday, NASCAR Cup Series drivers arrived at the ROVAL on Sunday prepared to race in heavy rain if that’s what they needed to do. Turns out it did rain on Sunday — for a while — but it was never all that persistent or bothersome. By the time the midway point of the race arrived, the precipitation had mostly subsided and the drivers were able to navigate the 17-turn, 2.28-mile road course pretty much as they would under normal conditions. Nevertheless, the rain that did come created some extra anxiety among competitors and played a role in their strategies, which included using rain tires for at least a portion of the afternoon. Brad Keselowski, for his part, hated to see the rain go away. “My day started off real strong in the rain, and there’s part of me that wishes it would have just stayed raining, believe it or not,” said Keselowski, who finished 18th.

DEFICITS PROVED TOO MUCH TO OVERCOME

T

he four drivers who showed up at the ROVAL on the wrong side of the Round of 8 cutline all knew they had their work cut out for them, but that was especially true for Clint Bowyer and Aric Almirola — who, unlike Austin Dillon and Kyle Busch, faced a virtual must-win scenario. When all the dust finally settled at the ROVAL, none of the four drivers who came into the weekend on the brink of elimination from championship contention were able to overcome their deficits. In fact, none of them even came particularly close. “It was tough,” said Almirola, who finished 16th in his Stewart-Haas Racing Ford. “I struggle here, in particular. I’m not the greatest road course racer, but specifically here has always been a challenge for me, and I just struggled all day.” Dillon, meanwhile, was frustrated by how the cautions fell. “The race just didn’t play our way,” he said after finishing 19th. “I raced hard all day.”

DESPITE BUTTERFLIES, ALEX BOWMAN TOOK CARE OF BUSINESS

F

ully cognizant that his margin for error in Sunday’s elimination race was pretty small if he wanted to reach the Round of 8, Alex Bowman brushed off the proverbial butterflies enough to secure an eighth-place finish and in doing so kept his championship hopes alive. “My nerves were getting to me a little bit,” said Bowman, who at one point told his team over the radio that he thought he was going to throw up. “It means a lot to this race team to make the Round of 8. It’s something that we’ve fallen short of doing the previous two years. I think a lot of people slept on us coming into the playoffs a little bit, so it’s a lot of validation for us to make that round.” Among those who Bowman beat for the final transfer spot was reigning series champion Kyle Busch. “When you’re racing champions of the sport to be able to advance, you’re never comfortable, right?” Bowman said.

KYLE BUSCH IS QUITE THE PROPHET, AFTER ALL

rior to the Round of 12 beginning, Kyle Busch very matter-offactly predicted that he would be eliminated in the Round of 12 and miss out on the Round of 8. Somewhat surprisingly, the reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion couldn’t have been any more astute in his prognostication. Entering Sunday’s elimination race at the ROVAL on the wrong side of the cutline and with little better than an outside shot of punching a ticket to the next round, Busch made a calculated gamble by staying out and inheriting the lead when most of the lead-lap cars pitted for tires with just over 20 laps to go. Hoping the track position might propel him to the win he needed in order to advance, Busch quickly fell through the field on older tires before ultimately finishing 30th. It was a disappointing finish to a disappointing day in an even more disappointing season for the Joe Gibbs Racing driver and two-time champ of NASCAR’s premier division.

CHASE ELLIOTT IS NASCAR’S UNDISPUTED KING OF THE ROAD

A

lready riding a three-race winning streak on road courses heading into Sunday’s all-important elimination showdown on the ROVAL, Chase Elliott continued his road mastery with a convincing win that makes him the only driver besides four-time champ Jeff Gordon to earn four road course triumphs in succession (Gordon actually captured six in a row between 1997 and 2000). Elliott’s streak began last fall at Watkins Glen, continued with a victory on the ROVAL a couple of months later, extended even further when he won on the Daytona International Speedway road course in August of this year, and culminated with Sunday’s triumph. Elliott, whose first career NASCAR Cup Series win came at Watkins Glen in August 2018, has scored five of his nine career Cup triumphs on road circuits. Clearly, the second-generation driver who is the son of NASCAR Hall of Famer and 1988 Cup champion Bill Elliott just has a special knack for situations where he has to turn both left AND right.

See Clint Bowyer and FOX Sports, who will be joined together at the hip next season when Bowyer transitions away from the driver’s seat and into a new role as an on-air announcer for the network’s NASCAR coverage. As drivers go, they don’t get any wittier, more gregarious or more sincere than Bowyer — a proud but humble Emporia, Kansas native whose affable and sometimes downright comical personality won over the affection of most NASCAR fans long ago. Bowyer is undoubtedly the perfect addition to the FOX NASCAR team, which tends to push the proverbial envelope in its commentary and be a bit more buttoned down than the crew over at NASCAR on NBC. 0 1 8

▶ RYAN BLANEY IS SIMPLY OVERRATED With all due respect to Ryan Blaney, I’ve concluded he’s overrated. I know, that probably sounds harsh. But when Blaney wrecked and ruined his shot at victory while leading Sunday’s race on the ROVAL, I was reminded of just how much the secondgeneration, Team Penske driver has underachieved this season and during his time at NASCAR’s highest level. While his teammates — former champions Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano — have combined for 21 wins since the start of the 2017 season, Blaney has been to Victory Lane just four times. Keselowski and Logano are now headed to the upcoming Round of 8, after Blaney failed to even reach the Round of 12 — by a country mile. That’s not good. Not good at all. 0 2 0

▶ THE FIRE HAS BEEN LIT IN KYLE BUSCH No driver in NASCAR despises losing more than Kyle Busch. So the fact that Busch — the reigning and two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and NASCAR’s all-time leader in national series victories — has gone winless in Cup competition this year might be the biggest head scratcher of this downright bizarre season. Now that Busch knows he also won’t be a participant in the Round of 8, it’s fair to assume he’s already turned some focus to next season. Brace yourself, folks: After the year Busch has endured in 2020, he’s going to show up in 2021 with proverbial guns blazing. Woe be unto anyone who’s in his way when the green flag waves on the Daytona 500 — a race he’s never won. 0 2 2

Chase Elliott BY ROB TIONGSON

Throughout the season, Rob Tiongson interviews various drivers and personalities in the world of NASCAR. Today, he catches up with Chase Elliott, driver of the No. 9 NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet Camaro. ▶▶ I know it can be a bit premature to look ahead to 2021, but how thrilled are you to take on a brand new unknown with Circuit of the Americas at Austin? Great question, man. To be honest, I’m so focused on this year right now and whatnot that I haven’t spent a lot of time going through the schedule for next year. I think it’s a good addition. It’s a nice course out there. I feel like it’s been quite the spectacle from the F1 side. Obviously that’s a whole different ball game. I’m looking forward to going. I think it’s going to bring new challenges and things none of us have ever seen before. I look forward to it, (can’t wait to) see what happens. ▶▶ Given the show up and race weekend format since the sport’s return, how have you and crew chief Alan Gustafson embraced this challenge to elevate your performance, particularly as you’re in the Round of 8 once again? Just trying to get better. We’ve been fortunate to get to the Round of 8 the last couple years. That’s kind of been our stopping point. For us, we’re just eyes ahead trying to assert ourselves amongst that next group. We tend to see the same guys make the Championship 4 every year, the same group fighting for those spots. I think for us, we’re very capable of asserting ourselves amongst them. We just have to be a little better, a little more consistent, eliminate those bad racetracks, and I think we can run with whoever when we’re at our best. I’ve said that before. I really believe it. I’m looking forward to the opportunity and ready to move on.

AJ ALLMENDINGER TAKES SOGGY XFINITY WIN AT CHARLOTTE BY ROB TIONGSON

W

hile Gene Kelly’s known for “Singing in the Rain,” perhaps NASCAR XFINITY Series racer AJ Allmendinger sang with glee after a stormy Saturday night edition of the Drive for the Care 250 at the Charlotte ROVAL. Returning to the NASCAR XFINITY Series last year with the Kaulig Racing outlet, the 38-year-old Los Gatos, Calif. native has thrived with this opportunity. Winning last year’s Charlotte ROVAL along with two top-fives and two top-10 finishes in five starts, the steady wheelman has dropped the hammer in grand fashion with an Atlanta win, five topfives, and seven top-10 results prior to Saturday night’s unusual, rainy, but memorable 68-lapper.

ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: OCTOBER 12, 2020

Known for his knack for road course racing, Allmendinger was not phased by his 22nd starting spot. Taking the lead for a brief stint between Laps 34 and 35, Allmendinger kept focused in his No. 16 Ellsworth Advisors Chevy Camaro, patiently carving his way through the field and maximizing on track position with the various pit

MAKING THE CONNECTION strategies. Once Stage 3 was underway, the race became the “Chase Briscoe and AJ Allmendinger Show,” a sequel to their incredible duel at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course in early July. Unlike their battle at Indy, the conditions at Charlotte were as treacherous and challenging as ever in any NASCAR race. At times, Briscoe, Allmendinger, and their peers looked like they were driving boats versus stock cars, driving through drenched portions of the 2.28 mile road course, particularly towards the infield and the frontstretch chicane. Tiptoeing their way around the infield portion of the ROVAL and chicane, this formidable duo raced tenaciously but cleanly. Although they traded paint, particularly once they got towards the infield segment of the track, it was a good, classic Saturday night special at Charlotte. To say the least, it was a race in which Allmendinger and Briscoe showcased their worth and prowess in stock cars under less than ideal conditions for the field. In Allmendinger’s 0 2 8

case, it’s an opportunity to continue his NASCAR efforts heading into 2021. On the other hand, for Briscoe, it was more than another chance at an XFINITY Series win during a sterling season. With Clint Bowyer wrapping up his full-time Cup efforts and joining the FOX NASCAR booth in 2021, Briscoe seems like a logical choice to take over the No. 14 car. Of course, Allmendinger and Briscoe’s mindsets were on winning the Drive for the Cure 250. Over the course of the race’s final 35 laps, their battle was quite spectacular, almost resembling a classic action movie in which the race winning move would come down to who’d flinch first. Naturally, caution flags spiced up the race to the finish, including yellows for the No. 15 of Jesse Little on Lap 50 in Turn 4, CJ McLaughlin in Turn 1 on Lap 61, and Brandon Brown on Lap 65 adjacent to Turn 4. In between those yellow flag periods, Allmendinger and Briscoe dared to see who’d use their brakes at the last moment in the trickiest portions of the track. Even with the rainfall and drenched track surface, the battle resembled that of a memorable Formula 1

tussle at Monaco or Brazil. Once the race restarted for a final time on Lap 67, Briscoe, who led the way, lost control of his No. 98 Ford Mustang, looping his car in a slick spot in Turn 1. Scooting by Briscoe for the lead, Allmendinger staved off the hard charging advances of Noah Gragson and Daniel Hemric to take his second win of the XFINITY Series season. “Crazy,” Allmendinger said after his win. ”The 98 (of) Chase Briscoe was doing a fantastic job. I didn’t really have anything for him after a couple laps but I knew (on) that final restart, I was going to do everything I could.” While Allmendinger celebrated his second win of the year in timely fashion, Briscoe contemplated the result, a race that would have likely been his ninth win of a career campaign. “In conditions like this, you’ve got to be at 100 percent and I tried going 110 and it bit me,” Briscoe observed. “Very unfortunate. That one’s going to sting for a long time. I feel like I did my 0 3 0

job for about 95 percent of the day, right.” Upon reflection, Briscoe took to his Twitter with some complimentary words for his road course rival. “It takes being 100 percent to win these races and I tried going 110 percent that last restart. Lesson learned, this one’s gonna sting for a while. Thanks AJ Allmedinger for coming and racing with us and congrats on the win. You make us all better road racers.” Ultimately, Allmendinger praised the young NASCAR star for a good, clean battle at Charlotte, tweeting, “Appreciate that, Chase Briscoe. You were badass today. Made me drive to the edge and beyond every lap. Was doing all I could to just hang with you. Always fun racing with you.” Certainly, the NASCAR XFINITY Series may be a division in which names are made. All told, it’s a division in which drivers and teams are “Making Connections” for memorable duels and moments for the future of stock car racing.

CAN ANYONE STOP CHASE ELLIOTT This week Danny B is back with his Need a Minute series, and he’s covering all the action from the very wet Charlotte Roval race this weekend. With his victory this weekend, Chase Elliott has solidified himself as the road course master in the Cup Series, and Danny takes us through what this means for his career, and who could be set up to cause him trouble. But first, he talks Xfinity. Several drivers from the weekend’s Xfinity race called it the worst driving experience they’ve had, with too much rain water causing 0 3 2

them trouble. But for viewers, Danny takes us through how this resulted in an incredible Xfinity show for the fans at home. While the conditions weren’t ideal, they did work out. Plus, Danny wades into the world of cancel culture and deplatforming to talk about some of the other journalists in NASCAR. What are the rules for blocking when it comes to famous personalities, and when is someone not living up to their expectations? Danny has a take in this week’s Danny B Needs a Minute.

CHASE ELLIOTT TAKES TIMELY VICTORY AT CHARLOTTE ROVAL BY ROB TIONGSON

H

eading into Sunday’s Bank of America ROVAL 400 at Charlotte, Chase Elliott was the odds on favorite for the race win. Suffice to say, the NASCAR Cup Series hasn’t seen any of its stars embrace the road course dominator label since Jeff Gordon from 1997 to ‘06. Then again, Elliott’s turned up the wick on these challenging venues. After taking his maiden Cup win at Watkins Glen in 2018, he followed up with this tremendous feat with another win in the Finger Lakes region along with a come-from-behind victory at Charlotte last year. Naturally, Elliott, a sixth-year Cup racing veteran, has steadily showcased his prowess as a thriving superstar, elite driver. With points finishes of 10th, fifth, sixth, and 10th in the past five years, the Dawsonville, Ga. native has been knocking on the door for the Championship 4. 0 4 2

Typically a frontrunner the first 32 races, particularly in the first six Playoff races, Elliott’s championship efforts typically stall in the Round of 8. Although the 24-year-old and his No. 9 NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet team have been fast in the penultimate round of the postseason, he’s encountered some hurdles that ultimately derail his quest. Of course, Elliott’s fans may still feel the sting of the 2017 Playoffs in which the popular racer, while battling for the win at Martinsville, tangled with Denny Hamlin in Turn 3 in the waning laps. Despite finishing eighth and second at Texas and Phoenix, his Martinsville mangle curtailed an otherwise promising effort. In 2018, Elliott, on the heels of a win at Kansas, compiled decent efforts at Martinsville and Texas with a seventh and sixth before a Lap 270 backstretch crash at Phoenix relegated him to a 23rd place finish and out of postseason glory at Homestead. Last year, Elliott’s third Round of 8 appearance was a series of nightmares with finishes of 36th, 32nd, and 39th at Martinsville, Texas, and Phoenix, frustrating moments for an otherwise

ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: OCTOBER 12, 2020

respectable effort. All things considered, Elliott has taken those experiences in stride to improve and thrive as a serious NASCAR Cup Series championship contender in 2020. So far, the young racer’s making a compelling case with his wins in the Charlotte 500 kilometer race in May and his win at the Daytona road course in August. Certainly, Elliott’s Playoff effort has been consistent despite a 20th at Darlington and 22nd at Las Vegas. Placing fifth at Las Vegas, seventh at Bristol, and fifth again at Talladega, the Hendrick Motorsports wheelman seemed poised on another grand afternoon at the Charlotte ROVAL. Starting in second, Elliott showcased speed from the onset by leading from Laps 8 to 12 before some early race pit strategies shuffled him towards the midfield. All told, the Georgian was confident behind the wheel of his No. 9 car, rocketing his way to a second-place finish in Stage 2 before reemerging late in the race for the lead.

ROB IS RACIN’ Battling with teammate Alex Bowman, Ryan Preece, Kyle Busch, and Erik Jones, Elliott, leading briefly from Laps 84 to 87, made like Take That, taking the lead on Lap 92 and this time, “back for good.” Nabbing his third win of the 2020 season, his third consecutive season of scoring three victories in a year, Elliott observed the challenging, changing conditions of the Charlotte ROVAL track surface and threat of stormy weather. “I tried to be as prepared as I could be for that if it happened,” Elliott said. “I felt like the biggest challenge today was that transition period when the track was wet, as it was drying out, understanding which areas were still damp and which areas weren’t. “The track kind of has like a sealer to it, when you see a fresh driveway or a big parking lot resealed. It’s kind of like it has that all the time, which makes it dark and kind of hard to differentiate what’s dry and what’s not. That was the biggest challenge, was just understanding where to be, 0 4 6

where not to be, trying to stay on the road.” Staying on course and focused on the big prize were the keys to Elliott’s triumph at Charlotte. Even when he was shuffled from the front of the field to attend to a loose wheel on Lap 54, it’s safe to say he didn’t lose his cool. “Looking ahead, those guys weren’t cussing me when I ran through the barrier,” he observed. “I wasn’t going to cuss them for a mistake either. I think we just needed to keep our eyes forward, heads down, focus on trying to get back up front and have a shot to win.” By all means, Elliott capitalized on his latest opportunity, cashing in on the moment during crunchtime in the NASCAR Cup Series season. Tying NASCAR Hall of Fame racer Jeff Gordon with his fourth consecutive road course win, while proud of this

ROB IS RACIN’

accomplishment, he recognizes the big picture. “I would just like to be good at all the tracks,” Elliott said in a matter of fact fashion. All in all, Elliott hopes to apply some of those past postseason bids to good use during a truly challenging season. Moreover, Elliott and crew chief Alan Gustafson are finding their stride during the “show up and race” segment of the year. Indeed, they are resembling more of the No. 9 team that kicked off this year with fast cars off the truck. Ultimately, he kept things in perspective, voicing confidence versus caution, a surefire sign that this fan favorite is 0 4 8

ready for the Round of 8. “Just trying to get better,” he said. “We’ve been fortunate to get to the Round of 8 the last couple years. That’s kind of been our stopping point. For us, we’re just eyes ahead trying to assert ourselves amongst that next group. “We tend to see the same guys make the Final 4 every year, the same group fighting for those spots. I think for us, we’re very capable of asserting ourselves amongst them. We just have to be a little better, a little more consistent, eliminate those bad racetracks, and I think we can run with whoever when we’re at our best.”

was leading when rain stopped the race. Overall statistics show that cars carrying No. 77 in the NASCAR Cup Series have visited Victory Lane twice while recording 105 top10 finishes in 942 starts. Ken Schroeder, of Jamestown, New York, was the first driver to use No. 77 when he participated in the Sept. 11, 1949, event at Pennsylvania’s Langhorne Speedway. Driving a 1949 Buick, Schroeder finished 22nd in his only NASCAR Cup Series start. Joe Lee Johnson, best known for winning the inaugural Coca-Cola 600 in 1960, was the first driver to visit Victory Lane in car No. 77 when he topped the Aug. 9, 1959, race at Nashville Speedway in Tennessee. Driving a 1957 Chevrolet, Johnson finished three laps ahead of second-place Larry Frank. Robert Pressley has the most starts (133) in car No. 77 and they came during his time with Doug Bawel’s Jasper Motorsports. Multiple drivers have driven the No. 77 car for Spire Motorsports this season.

ike so many kids who grew up with a father who was a professional race car driver, Jeb Burton decided to follow in the footsteps of his dad — retired NASCAR Cup Series driver Ward Burton — by pursuing his own career in racing. Also like his dad, the younger Burton is a lifelong outdoors enthusiast. “I have always enjoyed being in the outdoors,” said Jeb, who was raised in the rural town of Halifax, Virginia. “It’s something that has always been a passion of mine ever since I was young.” When Burton isn’t communing with nature, he’s teaching

others how to do so. One of his platforms for spreading information is his website, crossroadhunting.com, where he discusses conservationist practices, land management techniques and basic hunting strategies in a video format. Also featured prominently on the website is Ward Burton, who retired from NASCAR’s premier division in 2007 with five wins. Jeb, a part-time NASCAR Xfinity Series driver for JR Motorsports, takes every opportunity he has to get on the lake or in the woods with a gun or a bow. “It gives me a chance to get away from everything else that may be going on and just relax for a few hours,” he said. “It isn’t just about being out there to hunt or fish, either; it’s about taking the time to work the land and do whatever you can to make the land be in a better condition than when we got there.” Along with deer hunting, Jeb Burton hunts for turkeys, elk and bear. Among his many hunting companions is fellow driver Ryan Blaney, but Burton is most often in

One of the couple’s best hunting memories came in 2018 when Brandi killed a certain six-point buck the couple had been eyeing for two years. “I’ll remember that for a lifetime,” Jeb said. Jeb Burton and his many adventures in the outdoors are the subject of a TV show, “Crossroads with the Burtons,” that airs regularly on the Sportsman Channel. The program, which sometimes features Jeb’s wife, Brandi, and his, father Ward, chronicles Jeb’s life on and away from the racetrack and focuses on hunting, conservation and the 0 5 4

outdoors lifestyle. Jeb Burton is a big fan and ardent promoter of The Ward Burton Wildlife Foundation, which his father created in 1996. The mission of the foundation — based in the Burtons’ hometown of Halifax, Virginia — is to conserve America’s land and wildlife through wise stewardship while educating children and adults about natural resources that will shape America’s future. “Being outdoors is about taking the time to work the land and do whatever you can to make the land be in a better condition than when we got there.”
