THINGS TO WATCH AT KANSAS W

ith the NASCAR Cup Series’ playoff field now sliced in half from its original 16 participants, the battle for the 2020 championship rages on this weekend as Kansas Speedway hosts the first of three races in the Round of 8. Thanks to playoff points amassed throughout the season, Kevin Harvick will start this round with a somewhat healthy lead over all of his fellow remaining title contenders except for Denny Hamlin, who sits just 13 points back in second. Following are five things to watch for during or leading up to Sunday’s Hollywood Casino 400. BY JA RED TURNER

CLINT BOWYER’S LAST CHANCE TO PREVAIL AT HOME

A

native of Emporia, Kansas, Clint Bowyer holds a special affinity for Kansas Speedway. But after recently announcing that this would be his final season as a full-time NASCAR Cup Series driver, Bowyer has some unfinished business for what will be his final start at the “hometown” venue he holds so dear. For as much as Bowyer loves racing at Kansas Speedway, he loathes the fact that he’s 0-for-24 here and has actually struggled at Kansas more often than not. Obviously, he would love nothing better than to end his career-long Kansas drought with a long-awaited victory. “Going back to Kansas, I’m looking forward to just putting a cap on a wonderful track,” Bowyer said this week. “It’s been a bear for me — one of my worst tracks. That sucks so bad. Like, there’s nothing worse. I’m gonna come there and I’m gonna bust their ass this weekend. I don’t know how I’m gonna do it, but it’s gonna happen. Write it down.”

THE RETURN OF FANS TO KANSAS SPEEDWAY

C

iting public health concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic, Kansas state government officials prohibited fans from attending the NASCAR Cup Series race held at Kansas Speedway in July. However, a limited number of spectators — up to 10,000 of them — will have the opportunity to be in the grandstands for Sunday’s race. The change in policy was certainly welcomed by officials of the 1.5-mile track, which hosted a regular season race earlier this year but this weekend will play host to the first of three races in the NASCAR Cup Series’ Round of 8. “At Kansas Speedway, we have a tradition of fantastic playoff racing, and what better way is there to treat our fans than to have them witness that in person?” Kansas Speedway president Pat Warren said. “I know the drivers feed off the excitement of having the fans on hand, and we are enthusiastic for the opportunity to welcome them back to the track, offering a safe, healthy environment for everyone.”

MORE SILLY SEASON BUZZ

W

ho will fill the seat of the No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet and No. 14 StewartHaas Racing Ford next season? With Hendrick driver Alex Bowman moving from the organization’s No. 88 car to the No. 48, and with Bowyer giving up his seat at SHR for a new role in the FOX NASCAR broadcast booth, two of the most coveted rides in the sport are now available for 2021. The leading candidate for one or both seats is likely Erik Jones, a two-time NASCAR Cup Series race winner and Joe Gibbs Racing driver who is arguably NASCAR’s top free agent. Another driver looking for work is Ty Dillon, who has been seeking an opportunity for 2021 since being recently notified that his current team, Germain Racing, is closing its doors at the end of 2020. While no driver/team announcements are imminent for this weekend, rest assured there will be a lot of buzz concerning potential candidates for the No. 88 and No. 14 cars.

CONTENDERS & PRETENDERS

O

f the eight drivers still championship eligible entering the Round of 8, a strong case could be made that six of them have at least a decent shot of advancing to the Championship 4. Those six drivers are Kevin Harvick, Denny Hamlin, Brad Keselowski, Chase Elliott, Joey Logano and Martin Truex Jr. Aside from Truex, who boasts a lone victory, these half dozen drivers have all won multiple races this season. Truex, however, has to also be considered a serious threat to make it to the final race when considering he’s been part of the Championship 4 in four of the past five seasons. Of the eight drivers still in the hunt, this leaves only Alex Bowman and Kurt Busch, both of whom have gone to Victory Lane just once this season and neither of whom has ever been part of the Championship 4. For Bowman or Busch to end up being among this year’s Championship 4 would be a big surprise.

DENNY HAMLIN CHASING HISTORY

I

n 20 years of racing at Kansas Speedway, no driver has ever won three NASCAR Cup Series races in a row. This weekend, Denny Hamlin will look to become the first. Hamlin, who prevailed at Kansas in July 2020 and October 2019, is one of four drivers who have managed to record back-toback triumphs here (Jeff Gordon, Matt Kenseth and Martin Truex Jr. are the others). So for Hamlin to earn a third consecutive Kansas win this weekend would be a history-making accomplishment. Will it happen? Well, if basing his chances on his 2020 season as a whole, Hamlin certainly has a decent shot. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver’s seven wins this year are second only to the nine victories belonging to Kevin Harvick. If there’s anyone standing in the way of Hamlin’s quest for history this weekend, it’s likely to be Harvick — who, like Hamlin, owns a total of three Cup victories and one Xfinity Series win at Kansas.

RECAPPING JIMMIE JOHNSON’S NASCAR CAREER

■■ Jimmie Johnson and Crew Chief Chad Knaus celebrate in Victory Lane after winning the SpongeBob SquarePants 400 on May 9, 2015 in Kansas City, Kansas.

GAMBLIN’ MAN

JIMMIE JOHNSON’S DECISION TO ROLL THE DICE AT KANSAS IN MAY 2015 PAID OFF. BY JA RED TURNER

J

immie Johnson isn’t typically one to take big gambles on the racetrack or with regard to pit strategy, but a notable exception occurred at Kansas Speedway on May 9, 2015. Having run in arrears of Kevin Harvick, Brad Keselowski and Martin Truex Jr. for most of the night, Johnson made the gutsy call to forego a final pit stop when the other frontrunners elected to pit under caution with 10 laps to go. The move paid off in a big way when Johnson — despite being on older tires than his closest pursuers — managed to hold Harvick and the rest of the field at bay over the final six green flag laps to win for the third time in 2015 and the third time at Kansas. “As we got to the front and got out of the turbulent air and traffic, our car just got faster and faster,” said Johnson, who overcame a 19th-place qualifying result. “I felt like we were a top two or three car, but I didn’t have enough time up there in the top two or three to know where I stood against the 78 (Truex) and the 4 (Harvick),

0 1 8

but we gambled with our pit call and had just enough time to get to the finish line before the 4 on his new tires could get to us. Just well-played.” Johnson’s decision to remain on track under the late yellow ultimately rested on his own shoulders, not those of crew chief Chad Knaus. “He asked me what I wanted to do, and it just dawned on me: We’ve won two races, we’re locked in the playoffs, points don’t matter, it’s all about wins,” Johnson said. “I said, ‘Man, I feel like gambling,’ and that was the call, and we stayed out. “In some ways, we fought really hard to get to Victory Lane, but it’s fun to win one gambling. We haven’t really gambled before and won. Not to my knowledge. So, it feels a little different and pretty cool to have that come together.”

JEFF GORDON SCORES CLOSELY CONTESTED KANSAS WIN BY ROB TIONGSON

T

here’s the old saying that “a win’s a win” even if the path to a victory isn’t the smoothest for a driver like Jeff Gordon. When the NASCAR Cup Series made its way to the 1.5-mile Kansas Speedway for the 5-Hour Energy 400 on May 10th, 2014, it promised to be a memorable round as it was the first nighttime Cup race at this Midwest venue. Heading into the 11th round of the season, it was a year in which it paid to be a stock car veteran. With Gordon and crew chief Alan Gustafson gelling in their fourth season, they were challenged by the likes of Kevin Harvick in his first year with Stewart-Haas Racing, Matt Kenseth in his second campaign with Joe Gibbs Racing, and the usual suspects like Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Jimmie Johnson, and Greg Biffle. On the other hand, the third 1.5-mile race of 2014 offered a glimpse 0 2 0

into stock car’s future with the likes of Alex Bowman, Austin Dillon, and Ryan Blaney among the fresh faces of the 43-car field. If qualifying was any sign of the excitement for the 267-lap race, it certainly offered some interesting faces towards the front half of the grid like Kyle Larson (fifth), Danica Patrick (ninth), Brian Vickers (14th), Justin Allgaier (18th). Moreover, Blaney was making his Cup debut, starting a respectable 21st in the car number that he’d become synonymous with starting in 2018 (No. 12). Meanwhile, Harvick, in a prelude to his Stewart-Haas Racing dominance that kicked off in 2014, started from the pole while then two-time Kansas winner Gordon found himself starting in 13th. Sure, both drivers might’ve started 12 positions apart, but this Saturday night special would play host to their latest duel. From the get go, Harvick led the opening 41 laps before he pitted for his stop of the evening. This allowed Joey Logano, Carl Edwards, Jeff Gordon, and Brad Keselowski to respectively lead the next 11 laps. Along the way, the race’s first caution came on Lap 48 when Clint Bowyer spun along the backstretch. Earning the Lucky Dog during the caution period, Harvick returned back to the lead on the Lap 53 restart, leading the next 21 circuits.

ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: OCTOBER 16, 2020

Along the way, Michael Annett, David Ragan, Landon Cassill, and Ryan Truex tangled in Turn 4 on Lap 61 while Denny Hamlin spun in Turn 2 on Lap 72, bringing out the race’s next two cautions. This Saturday night special was laundry evening in NASCAR because Marcos Ambrose and Kurt Busch went for the spin cycle on Laps 111 and 181. Additionally, it was a night to forget for Jamie McMurray, Justin Allgaier, David Gilliland, David Ragan, AJ Allmendinger, Paul Menard, and Casey Mears as they respectively crashed on Laps 151 and 188. By all means, Harvick was quite tough to beat at Kansas, leading 119 laps, with his next best challenger, Joey Logano, leading 63 times. Despite a somewhat roller coaster start to the race, Gordon, who rolled off the grid from 13th, dropped to 19th at halfway but maintained an average running position of ninth. In other words, while Harvick and Logano waged their battles for the lead in the early going, Gordon was ready to leap into the fight when it truly mattered. One after one, Gordon and his No. 24 Axalta Chevrolet SS were making some noise, seemingly improving as the race transitioned from dusk to night. One of the most important factors for Gordon’s strong race effort

MEMORY LANE was his pit crew that serviced the No. 24 car on 10 different occasions. With the third best average time spent on pit road (29.881), it seemed like the latest incarnation of the “Rainbow Warriors” were ready to win at Kansas. Coming down to the final 60 laps of the race, Harvick’s path to an easy victory wasn’t exactly set in stone. Certainly, Matt Kenseth, Jimmie Johnson, and Brad Keselowski, drivers that led for portions of the race, tried their hand with a late race Kansas gamble before their final pit stops. However, Gordon’s pit crew, reeling off a quick pit stop one lap prior to Harvick on Lap 238, rewarded their driver by getting him in the lead by Lap 260. That pivotal stop paid dividends for the 42-year-old Vallejo, Calif. native, who held off a hard charging Harvick on the final lap. Even seeing his 0.6 second advantage shrink to just a margin of victory totaling 0.112 seconds, Gordon took his 89th career Cup win in rather dramatic fashion. 0 2 4

“Yeah, that whole last run was really strange for me, because I felt like we had a good stop,” Gordon said. “We came off pit road and the four tires that we took, the car was hooked up right away and I was excited about that, and then a lap or two later, I saw Kevin come off pit road onto the back straightaway and we got ahead of him, and I knew it was on at that moment. “I knew I had to push hard, and the car felt good at that time, so I was like, oh, we’re okay. And then I had to maneuver through some lap traffic, and he got right to my bumper, but I actually was able to pull away from him, and I was like, wow, I wasn’t expecting that. He’d been so good all night. We’d finally gotten the car where I could run the top groove.” Looking more like the driver who won the first two Cup races at Kansas in 2001 and ‘02 versus a racer on feast or famine campaigns in recent years, Gordon recognized the importance of his latest (and what turned out to be, his final) victory at this speedway. “An old guy like me likes to be patient and finesse,” he observed. “I say that, but when he (Gustafson) gives me cars

like he’s given me this year, I’ve been able to be aggressive and drive hard, even on the tracks that aren’t worn out, and that’s a sign of the kind of cars that we’re bringing.” As Gordon soaked up his Kansas victory, Harvick reflected on his close second-place finish, recognizing an error that possibly cost him a shot at his second straight triumph at this intermediate track. “You can’t win them all,” Harvick said. “For me, I made a mistake at the end looking at the fuel pressure gauge instead of the tach) and felt like that’s probably what cost us the chance to stay in front of the 24. But the 24 was good all night.” In summary, it was a great evening for Gordon, looking more like someone who’d keep racing for several more years than retire 0 2 6

after 2014. In hindsight, Gordon’s resurgence seems well timed in that he wrapped up his final years on a high note. “When the cars are that good, my back just doesn’t seem to hurt as much,” Gordon said. “The whole retirement thing I think is thrown out there too much, and I’m probably somewhat to blame. This is all right. I’m having a good time. That’s why I feel young, because I’m just having a great time.” Ultimately, Gordon had a thrilling time in the final chapters of his NASCAR career, visiting Victory Lane on four more occasions (Indianapolis, Michigan, and Dover in 2014 and Martinsvile in ‘15) and wrapping up his stock car legacy with a solid sixth in relief of Dale Earnhardt, Jr. at Martinsville in 2016, a possible future entry of “Memory Lane.”

BOBBY ZALENSKI EARNS PERFECT CHARLOTTE ROVAL VICTORY BY ROB TIONGSON

I

n the case of Tuesday night’s eNASCAR race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL, Bobby Zalenski was like P!nk’s song from 2010: perfect. Much like NASCAR Cup Series racers playing “Capture the Flag” against Chase Elliott on road courses, Zalenski and his No. 83 Virtual Racing School Chevy Camaro on road courses are about as intimidating on these circuits except in the world of the eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series. Prior to Tuesday night’s 55-lap race, Round 17 of the season, Zalenski led the eight championship contenders consisting of Keegan Leahy, Jimmy Mullis, Nick Ottinger, Ryan Luza, Garrett Lowe, Ray Alfalla, and Mike Conti. In other words, Zalenski

might’ve seemed like the clear favorite but he had at least seven other worries on the 2.28-mile road course. One way that Zalenski eased those concerns was starting on the pole, besting Leahy, Mullis, Bowlin, and Corey Vincent in qualifying. Meanwhile, Ottinger (sixth), Luza (18th), Lowe (seventh), Alfalla (24th), and Conti (10th)

ESPORTS looked towards a respectable evening at Concord, N.C. Once the field got the green flag, Zalenski checked out from his competitors, pulling away as if he needed to get to the Lionel Racing store at Concord Mills and back in time for the win. While Zalenski had “get gone” speed in his unmistakable No. 83 car, Mullis, Ottinger, Leahy, and Logan Clampitt held their own as they ran inside the top-five. After nine laps, Conti experienced problems with his engine, popping his gear out of second en route to a crushing 37th place finish. With the racing set without any caution periods, it essentially meant that one mistake would eliminate a driver from a solid finish. Nailing each corner, executing flawless stops, and finding a great passing opportunity proved quite important as Larry McReynolds with the cheesegrater for the Darlington race telecast earlier this year. No matter how determined the competition was at the ROVAL, Zalenski was just too tough to beat in the eNASCAR playoff opener. As dominant 0 3 6

as Pedro Martinez on the baseball mound or Alex Morgan on the soccer field, Zalenski proved quite as formidable on this challenging road course. Virtually (and literally) uncontested, Zalenski bested Mullis by 11.622 seconds, his third win of the year. After some celebratory donuts in front of those rousing digital (and real) fans, Zalenski expressed gratitude with his latest feat. “You put all this preparation in and all that, and just somehow you’re able to maximize every aspect, every time with the car and just understanding the tires,” he said. “I’m just happy we’re going to Homestead, that’s the goal.” As Zalenski zoomed his way to Victory Lane, Jimmy Mullis,

Nick Ottinger, Keegan Leahy, Logan Clampitt, Garrett Lowe, Christian Challiner, Corey Vincent, Casey Kirwan, and Graham A. Bowlin happily placed in the top-10. Meanwhile, Mullis seemed content with his runner-up result while having his sights set on next Tuesday night’s battle in the Heartland. “Did what we came here to do tonight, solid P2 points finish,” he tweeted. “Full focus onto next week at Kansas. Proud of this team! Off to a great start!” Furthermore, with the victory at Charlotte, 0 3 8

Zalenski pulled to a seven point lead over Leahy while Mullis and Ottinger currently find themselves in the top four. On the other hand, Luza, Lowe, Alfalla, and Conti hope to make up additional ground next week. With Round 17 in the books, Zalenski and his cohorts prepare for Round 18 of the eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series season at Kansas Speedway on Tuesday, October 20th, 2020, at 9:00 PM ET/8:00 PM CT. NASCAR.com and iRacing’s Twitch channel will live stream the race, the second race of the Playoffs.

Alex Bowman BY ROB TIONGSON

Throughout the season, Rob Tiongson interviews various drivers and personalities in the world of NASCAR. Today, he catches up with Alex Bowman, driver of the No. 88 Valvoline/ChevyGoods.com Chevrolet Camaro. ▶▶ It seems like you and your team are starting to find the speed that’s made you such a threat early in the year. What have been some of the keys to the team’s turnaround during the Playoffs? Yes, I don’t feel like we’re back to where we were early in the year still. We were dominating every week, it felt like. We gave a lot of races away, but we led a ton of laps there from I guess Fontana all the way through, like, second Charlotte. We were on it every single week. Race car capable of winning every single week. We’re not all the way back there. We’ve made a ton of gains and we’re close, but we’re not all the way there. I think the biggest thing that has helped us get pointed back in the right direction after the rough summer is each and every individual on the 88 team, and at Hendrick Motorsport, but specifically on the 88 team, staying positive, working hard and working well together. We’ve had some new faces on the team. It’s really easy to get along when things are going well like the beginning of the year. When things start going wrong, like they did through the summer, it’s so easy for a team to fall apart. I never once saw, heard, had to deal with any team-falling-apart-ism. They just worked hard and stuck together and kept learning, kept improving. It’s got us back on track.

IN THE HOT SEAT ▶▶ Given the fact they’ve been able to reconcile some of the growing pains, which tracks do you feel are your best chance given it’s the “show up and race” format for the balance of this year? Kansas and Texas. I feel like our cars are really strong at Martinsville. There’s something as a race car driver that I am missing a little bit of. I feel like I’ve been able to gain on it. We were better this time around. Came from a lot of studying, leaning on the guy that’s sitting in the media center (Chase Elliott). Kind of like trying to catch him on a road course, catch him at Martinsville. I feel like those first two are our best shots. We’re plenty capable of getting it done.

DRIVER Q&A

JOE GIBBS WILL NOT SETTLE FOR SECOND BY JOSEPH WOLK IN

Joe Gibbs knows only one thing. Winning. It’s all he cares about. The legendary NFL coach and NASCAR team owner is gunning for another Cup Series championship. While Kyle Busch was eliminated from the NASCAR Playoffs at the Charlotte Roval, Martin Truex Jr. and Denny Hamlin are still title favorites. Now, the Toyota-backed team is facing its toughest challenge of 2020. Can either of the two Joe Gibbs Racing drivers left in the playoffs take home the championship trophy? ▶  WHAT’S THE BIGGEST HIGHLIGHT OF THE SEASON FOR YOU? “From the racing world, Denny Hamlin has been red hot for us. He’s won seven times this year, and we’re right in the middle of the playoffs. Martin Truex Jr. looks good, too. That car is in pretty good shape. Kyle Busch has been one of our struggles this year and he hasn’t won a race, which is unusual for him.” ▶  WHY DO YOU THINK KYLE IS STRUGGLING TO WIN THIS YEAR? “We have no practice now, which is a huge deal for us. If you take Kyle Busch, he’s great at setting up the car for the race. That’s been 0 4 4

taken away. We show up at the racetrack, get in the car and start racing. It’s a big change for us, and it’s affecting some teams more than others.” ▶  WHAT WOULD ANOTHER TITLE MEAN TO YOU, ESPECIALLY IN SUCH A CRAZY YEAR? “Winning championships is huge. Our sport is totally different in that it’s a huge deal for sponsors. In football, basketball and baseball, if you don’t have a sponsor, you’re going to play no matter what. Over here, it’s critically important. They’re more than a sponsor. They’re a partner. It’s a whole package to keeping sponsors happy.”

OFFICIAL NASCAR MEMBER’S CLUB Q&A

MICHIGAN MAN GETS EARNHARDT ENCOUNTER THROUGH ONMC BY DA N GUT TENPL A N

B

en Vanfossen vowed never to cancel his membership to the Official NASCAR Members Club in 2017 when his membership afforded him an autograph session with Dale Earnhardt Jr. That was just the highlight of an epic all-expensespaid trip to Talladega Superspeedway, where Vanfossen took part in a garage tour, drivers meetings and other hot pass experiences. He earned the trip by winning an annual ONMC contest. Vanfossen shared reflections of his ONMC experience with ROAR in a recent interview. ▶  HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A MEMBER OF THE CLUB? “I would say about five years.” ▶  HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A NASCAR FAN? “Oh, that’s got to be at least 25 years.” ▶  DO YOU GET TO MANY RACES? “I have Champions Club tickets at Michigan International Speedway. I was supposed to go in July and August, but they cancelled both of them for fans.” ▶  WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE DRIVERS? “I started with Dale Earnhardt Sr. Then I followed Jr. Now, I pretty much like Erik Jones, Brad Keselowski and Ryan Newman.”

0 4 8

ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: OCTOBER 16, 2020

■■ ONMC member Ben Vanfossen

▶  WHAT IS YOUR BEST EXPERIENCE WITH THE ONMC? “The best one was in 2017 with that all-expenses trip to Talladega. I won it for me and a guest. Being in the garage and in the drivers meeting was quite an experience. It was a random contest that they do every year, and I actually won it.” ▶  AND YOU DIDN’T PAY FOR ANYTHING? “No, and I got guided around the track all weekend. It was Dale Jr.’s last year there. I was able to get his autograph, which is hard to do. That was my best experience with the club.” ▶  WHAT OTHER TRACKS HAVE YOU BEEN TO? “I’ve been to Chicagoland, Talladega and Michigan for live races.” ▶  WHAT HAS THIS YEAR BEEN LIKE FOR YOU? “I’m still dialed in and watching a lot of races on TV. Michigan International Speedway moved my tickets from this year to next year. Hopefully the virus will be gone by then, and I’ll be able to go.”
