TIME FOR A CHANGE OF RULES PACKAGE In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp gives us his race review and analysis of the Hollywood Casino 400 Playoff race at Kansas Speedway. He takes us through the winners and the top finishers, of course, but if you watched the race, you know what else he’s going to be talking about - the rules package. Last night’s race has reignited the debate, and Eric has plenty to say about it. But this weekend was also the second to last round in the Cup Series playoffs. Joey 0 0 4
Logano earned his final four berth thanks to his win. With less than three weeks left before NASCAR crowns its champion, Logano’s win came as a bit of a surprise. His only other win in 2020 was, coincidentally, back in Phoenix. Eric fills us in on the rest of the context. And of course, Eric will put the entire race up on the Groovy Gauge, which should definitely have some people talking after the rules controversy this weekend. Catch all of that and more on this week’s episode of Out of the Groove.

uoyed by a lightning-fast final pit stop that put his No. 22 car out front when track position mattered most, Joey Logano withstood a persistent challenge from Kevin Harvick over the final 42 green flag laps to win Sunday’s Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway and become the first driver to secure a berth in the Championship 4. Logano, who hadn’t won since March, will now have an opportunity to race straight up for his second NASCAR Cup Series title. Following are five lessons learned in the opening race of the Round of 8. CLINT BOWYER DIDN’T GET THE FAREWELL PERFORMANCE HE WANTED
P
rior to entering what he expects to be his final start at Kansas Speedway, Clint Bowyer vowed to hold nothing back in pursuing a long-awaited first victory at the place he considers his home track. But unfortunately for the native of Emporia, Kansas, it wasn’t meant to be. Making his 25th NASCAR Cup Series appearance at the track less than two hours from his hometown, Bowyer came up empty once again, as he crossed the finish line 26th in the 40-car field. Bowyer, who recently announced plans to spend 2021 as an announcer for NASCAR on FOX, led the field on a pre-race pace lap to commemorate his final Kansas start. While things didn’t turn out as he wanted, Bowyer had a solid car and was in contention for a top-10 before suffering damage and subsequently making an unscheduled green flag pit stop with 28 to go. “It’s pretty frustrating, because I wanted to leave here with a really good finish,” Bowyer said.

ELLIOTT, BOWMAN & TRUEX HAVE WORK TO DO BUT ARE WITHIN STRIKING DISTANCE
W
ith one of three races down in the Round 8, a Championship 4 appearance is still plenty attainable for Chase Elliott, Alex Bowman and Martin Truex Jr. The trio does have some work to do, however, if they plan on being among the four drivers who race straight up for the title at Phoenix Raceway on November 8. Of the three, Elliott has the best shot of advancing, as he’s only eight points behind current cutoff driver Brad Keselowski. Bowman (-27) and Truex (-31) have a steeper hill to climb but could slip back into the Championship 4 picture with strong outings and perhaps a little luck. This much is certain: Elliott, Bowman and Truex aren’t giving up on their championship dreams with two races still remaining in this round. “We’ll go to Texas, give it our best shot to go win, and do the same at Martinsville,” Elliott said of the upcoming events. “Hopefully, we’re still alive come Phoenix.”

IT’S WIN OR GO HOME FOR KURT BUSCH
A
lready starting the Round of 8 in a less-than-optimal position among the other seven remaining title contenders, Kurt Busch faced an uphill battle before the green flag ever waved on Sunday at Kansas. But after losing an engine and finishing 38th in his No. 1 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet, Busch has one hope and one hope only of advancing to the Championship 4. That hope is winning one of the two remaining races in the Round of 8. Simply put, the mission couldn’t be any clearer and the pressure couldn’t be any higher on the 2004 NASCAR Cup Series champion after posting a finish at Kansas that he would rather forget. “It’s a shame for everybody at Chip Ganassi Racing,” Busch said of how his race ended on Sunday. “Having an engine failure in the playoffs, it’s just like a huge parachute that slows you up. We’ll pack that parachute up, throw it away, and we’ll go to Texas to win.”

HARVICK, HAMLIN, KESELOWSKI DID WHAT THEY HAD TO DO
W
hile neither Kevin Harvick nor Denny Hamlin nor Brad Keselowski got the outcome they wanted on Sunday at Kansas, all three drivers did what they had to do to remain in position to move on to the Championship 4. Harvick, who led the most laps but finished second to Joey Logano, is 41 points ahead of the cutoff for advancing to the final round, followed by Hamlin (+20) and Keselowski (+8). With two races remaining in the Round of 8, these three drivers don’t have any ground to make up; they simply need to maintain their place in the standings to be among the quartet of drivers who will compete for the title at Phoenix Raceway on November 8. Of course, the other key will be making sure one of the championship contenders behind them in the standings doesn’t win. But for Harvick, Hamlin and Keselowski, the next two races are more about avoiding a mishap and being solid than setting the world on fire.

JOEY LOGANO DELIVERED A TRULY CLUTCH PERFORMANCE
W
inning for the third time this season but the first time since NASCAR resumed activities following a more than two month sabbatical for the COVID-19 pandemic, Joey Logano couldn’t have picked a better time to return to Victory Lane as he became the first driver to punch a ticket to the Championship 4. On a day when he didn’t have the fastest car, Logano used track position to his advantage after beating Kevin Harvick off pit road to take over the lead with 45 laps to go. Once the green flag waved for the final time three laps later, Logano’s No. 22 Team Penske Ford held Harvick’s No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford at bay for the final 42 laps despite Harvick’s relentless attempts to make a pass. Logano ultimately took the checkered flag just .312 seconds ahead of his closest pursuer. “You gotta want it, man,” Logano said. “What an amazing team this Shell Pennzoil team is. I am worn out.”

▶ THE TIMING OF KYLE LARSON’S PLEA FOR REINSTATEMENT
IS CURIOUS
The biggest story of the week leading up to Kansas Speedway was that Kyle Larson has formally petitioned NASCAR for reinstatement. Larson, who was suspended indefinitely by NASCAR in April for using a racial slur during an iRace, has undergone racial sensitivity training as required by the sanctioning body and says he’s learned from the mistake that led to him not only being suspended indefinitely but losing his ride with Chip Ganassi Racing. Of course, Larson’s plea comes at a time when two of the NASCAR Cup Series’ most coveted rides — the No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet and the No. 14 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford — need a driver for 2021. I truly hope Larson has really had a change of heart and isn’t just being an opportunist here. 0 1 8

▶ WHAT WASN’T TO LOVE ABOUT KANSAS FINISH? Following Sunday’s race, Twitter lit up with fans voicing their frustrations about Kevin Harvick being unable to pass Joey Logano for the lead over the final 42 greenflag laps despite having a faster car. The big rub was that the NASCAR Cup Series’ current aero package was to blame for Harvick’s inability to execute a winning move, because the package puts drivers in “dirty air” — that is, running behind another car — at a disadvantage to the leader, who is out front in “clean air.” While the aero package certainly did play a role in the outcome, try taking a moment to appreciate Sunday’s race for what it did offer: a spirited battle between two longtime rivals for an automatic berth in the Championship 4. 0 2 0

▶ ERIK JONES DESERVES A RIDE FOR 2021 With just three races left in 2020, the clock is ticking on Erik Jones as he pursues a job for next season. Jones, who is in his fourth year in NASCAR’s premier division and his third year with Joe Gibbs Racing, is being let go by JGR at season’s end to open up a seat for now-rookie driver Christopher Bell. Despite winning a race in each of his two full seasons with JGR, Jones is running out of time to shore up his future. Here’s hoping that Hendrick Motorsports or Stewart-Haas Racing — the only two premier organizations with a seat available — gives Jones a second chance. He has the talent to be consistently successful. For whatever reason, JGR just wasn’t the right fit. 0 2 2

JOEY LOGANO SCORES TIMELY KANSAS PLAYOFFS WIN BY ROB TIONGSON
W
hen it seems like it’s time to count out Joey Logano and his No. 22 Shell/Pennzoil Ford Mustang team, the 30-year-old Middletown, Conn. native finds ways to keep doing incredible things on the track. After batting .500 following the first four races of the NASCAR Cup Series season, it took some time for the 2018 Cup champion to find his footing once the action resumed in mid-May. Shaking off finishes like 18th in the Real Heroes 400 at Darlington, a 13th in the Coca-Cola 600, 21st in the spring Bristol race, and a four-race stretch in which he finished 17th or worse between Homestead to the Pocono doubleheader weekend, Logano and crew chief Paul Wolfe turned the tide starting with the Texas summer race by scoring a third-place finish. 0 2 4

Eventually, the summer swoon transitioned to strong, consistent finishes not only on the short tracks, but the intermediates, turning up the wick just as the NASCAR Playoffs arrived last month with the Southern 500. Averaging a respectable 8.57 finishing position in the postseason, Logano, who’s historically been strong at Kansas, Texas, and Martinsville, entered Sunday’s Hollywood Casino 400 with a quiet sense of confidence. Following a solid runner-up finish at the Charlotte ROVAL, when asked about his chances against the juggernaut tandem of Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin, with his trademark grin, Logano said, “We’re right where I want to be.” Starting second on the grid for Sunday’s 267-lap race, Logano didn’t exactly fire off on all cylinders but he kept himself in the fight, biding his time en route to a ninth-place finish in Stage 1. While Stage 2 didn’t exactly play in Logano’s cards for additional points, it was clear that the No. 22 team had a car that could keep up with the cold conditions. Once the final stage commenced, Logano started to mix it up in the front, working his way closer to the lead pack and eventually with
ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: OCTOBER 19, 2020
leader Kevin Harvick. Following a caution period for Tyler Reddick’s Turn 4 incident on Lap 222, the lead lap drivers made their way to pit road for their final stop of the afternoon. With precious seconds to spare in this critical moment of the race, Logano’s No. 22 crew delivered with a phenomenal stop to get their man into the lead ahead of Harvick. From that point on, it was an exciting chase between Logano and Harvick as both drivers worked their way around drivers running at least a lap down, sometimes even playing a game of opposite lanes to find optimum grip and advantageous air. Those final 46 laps at Kansas provided plentiful entertainment in terms of who’d break under the intense pressure for a critical NASCAR Playoffs race win. At times, it looked like Harvick would pull off another “Closer” moment against Logano, particularly when he got tremendous runs off Turn 4 in the waning laps. Clearly, the fight for the race win was as clean and efficient as ever for a Round of 8 race between two former NASCAR Cup champions. These racing veterans left very little margin for error but respected each other’s space, even when the checkered flag was within sight.

MEMORY LANE Finally breaking through for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic pause in mid-March, Logano celebrated his third win of the year on a rather chilly Sunday afternoon in Kansas. Earning the golden ticket into the Championship 4 battle at Phoenix Raceway, it’s safe to say the quiet confidence displayed by Logano was backed up by his Kansas triumph. Prior to the Hollywood Casino 400, Logano mapped out his thoughts on the Round of 8 and the progress of his No. 22 team. “I feel great,” Logano said after his runner-up at the Charlotte ROVAL. “We’ve had good speed. I look at Vegas, if we didn’t get the damage, get trapped down a lap there for a minute, we were really good there, (and) capable of winning. I look at Martinsville as one of our best races. Texas wasn’t bad for us either. I feel great about where we’re at. I told my wife before we left, I just got to get through today. I feel like we have got a good shot at getting to the Championship 4. This is such an unknown. 0 2 8
This is what had my stomach in knots. Like I said, I’m glad to get through it. I feel really good about our chances.” After a survival of the fittest type race in the treacherous Charlotte ROVAL, Logano’s win gives his team a couple of weeks to prepare for the final battle of the 2020 season at Phoenix. Moreover, it adds more pressure to his title rivals like Chase Elliott, Alex Bowman, Martin Truex, Jr., and Kurt Busch. Instead of seeing his postseason hopes end with a close call like last year following his frustrating day at Phoenix, he’ll head to the “Valley of the Sun” brimming with total confidence and that killer instinct focus that netted him the 2018 title. For the rest of his competition, that could just spell bad news come November 8th, 2020. However, there’s still two more races left to decide Logano’s title rivals, a topic for a future edition of “Rob Is Racin’.”

MAKING THE CONNECTION
RYAN SIEG MAKING NAME FOR HIMSELF IN XFINITY SERIES BY ROB TIONGSON
T
hroughout his eight year career in the NASCAR XFINITY Series, Ryan Sieg and his family-owned No. 39 RSS Racing Chevrolet Camaro team have constantly overachieved against the big-time teams. By all means, the Tucker, Ga. native has showcased his prowess and talents with pure grit and determination. Making the postseason field in 2016 (ninth) and ‘19 (11th), Sieg and his team appreciate their successes even when facing the most challenging of odds with Cup-affiliated XFINITY Series efforts and those with a larger budget. To say the least, Sieg has been a fun story to watch in this year’s XFINITY Series Playoffs as he’s advanced his way

into the Round of 8, the penultimate segment of the postseason. With crew chief Kevin “Cowboy” Starland guiding his driver and team since their initial full-time efforts in 2014, they’ve built on their rapport and foundation by maximizing their opportunities with the resources around them. Still, Sieg takes pride with

MAKING THE CONNECTION the underdog label as he’s cognizant of the logistics and challenges presented before him and his No. 39 team. “We definitely are an underdog for sure,” Sieg acknowledged. “Our budget is probably a lot smaller than a lot of the teams that we’re running against. Definitely, we embrace that. It’s going to be tough for us. Coming into this round, we knew that it was going to be tough to try to advance and just try to keep up with them because they have so many races in the Cup cars and there’s just so many people that all they do is just fine tune their cars all week. All of my guys at the shop that work there are here at the track. We’re doing all we can with what we’ve got.” Considering their performances since the start of the Playoffs, Sieg and his team have been quite impressive, placing fifth at Las Vegas, second at Talladega, and 21st in a rainy Charlotte ROVAL race, finishes that netted them with a spot in the Round of 8. Without a doubt, Sieg’s path to a potential Championship 4 spot might be as steep as 0 3 8
climbing Mt. Washington considering that he and his team are battling Chase Briscoe, Austin Cindric, Justin Allgaier, Noah Gragson, Justin Haley, Brandon Jones, and Ross Chastain. Pointing out that he outpointed Harrison Burton and Riley Herbst to make this leg of the Playoffs, it’s quite an accomplishment in itself that Sieg’s advanced this far. If the first impression seems to be that Sieg and his crew are content with making the Round of 8, think again. Rolling off from the eighth starting position in Saturday night’s Kansas Lottery 300, Sieg placed eighth in the race’s first two stages, avoiding the skirmishes that eliminated Gragson and Cindric from battling for a potential race win. Perhaps those years of experience serve the 33-year-old driver quite well, evident when he stayed cool under the pressure and duress of the wild racing around him that resembled Daytona or Talladega instead of Kansas. Moreover, Sieg elected to stay out longer than his fellow lead lap peers, waiting to pit at the last moment or at least before a

caution period. By Lap 157, Sieg’s strategy paid off when Josh Reaume brought out the yellow for a Turn 4 spin. Although Sieg surrendered the race lead, he was on the same pit cycle as Briscoe and the rest of the lead lap racers. Furthermore, Sieg found himself back in the lead by Lap 169, just 32 circuits from a possible maiden win. However, Briscoe retook the lead once the race resumed on Lap 178, seemingly in command and without much worries in the world before Myat Snider spun in Turn 2 for the final caution on Lap 192. Dropping to second during this exchange, Sieg found himself in a unique position where he could stay out and attempt to make a bold move on older tires during the final restart or pit for fresh tires for some “Hail Mary” racing. 0 4 0
Opting for the latter strategy, Sieg wasted little time to charge his way from ninth to second in just four laps, making moves that would’ve made Cole Trickle proud. Running out of laps, Sieg placed third, a valiant podium for a driver who’s truly doing things in the spirit of Alan Kulwicki and the old school racers who owned their teams. While Sieg scored his fifth career third-place finish, it’s this spirited drive and performance that’s made him a posterboy of the NASCAR XFINITY Series. With the reputation of being a series in which names are made, Sieg, humble and appreciative of this incredible season, couldn’t help but smile even while sporting his gaiter. “Yea, definitely, trying to make a name...I’ve got a career year right now going,” Sieg said. “So if we can continue to finish off great, then
ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: OCTOBER 19, 2020
we’ll hopefully find ourselves in the Final 4.” As evident in NASCAR’s 72-year history, there’s a reason why we run races and why fans, racers, teams, and observers take in the experience of stock car racing. While someone like Chase Briscoe’s reeling off incredible numbers as a title As featured in contender, Sieg and his Cape Cod, MA VERTISEMENT family are very much in this fight as Kulwicki and his 2020 band of brothers were in 1992. Of course, that was a year in which David triumphed over Goliath. Perhaps history may repeat itself in 2020, a feel good story that would resonate as loudly as the No. 39 CMGRoofing.com Chevrolet Camaro on race days. Ultimately, it’s safe to say that Sieg is “Making the Connection” in grand fashion and against amazing odds.

Daniel Hemric BY ROB TIONGSON

Throughout the season, Rob Tiongson interviews various drivers and personalities in the world of NASCAR. Today, he catches up with Daniel Hemric, driver of the No. 8 Poppy Bank Chevrolet Camaro in the NASCAR XFINITY Series. ▶▶ Given the fact that you’ve taken the wheel of the No. 8 NXS ride after driving in the Cup Series last year, what is it about JR Motorsports that’s really helped showcase what you can do in a racecar in terms of your long-term prospects? Do you see yourself saying, “Hey, I want to get back to Cup or taking the best opportunity in NASCAR?” Yea, absolutely. I’ve said here recently that no matter where I land at here, hopefully it’s on my feet somewhere, that it’s full-time racing at the highest level possible in whatever series I can be. Obviously, I was given a great opportunity this year with as late as I found out that I didn’t have a Cup ride for 2020. Losing it so late in 2019, I thought, there’s no way I’m going to be able to put a deal together for 2020. It worked out where we were able to piece together 20 something races in this 8 car and to be able to get funding from Poppy Bank, Chevrolet, and all of our supporters to make this run happen. But ultimately, it’s about keeping my butt in the seat this year, trying to make sure that I could stay a part of the mix and conversation. We’ve been able to do that especially a lot here as of late. Quite frankly, I feel a lot of people are thinking that I’m down and out and on my way out of the sport. I can promise you, I’m going to do everything I can in my power to stick around here to be in this sport of NASCAR for a long time to come. And I look forward to being successful at it. Just gotta have the right break, man. It’s all about timing and situations. Having a shot with JR Motorsports this year has allowed me to keep the seat warm to hopefully make my move for next year, wherever it’s going to be and hopefully be able to run full-time.

▶▶ We’ve seen the NASCAR XFINITY Series become one of the most competitive races of the weekend. How much has the competition changed in terms of the intensity and focus with contending as a frontrunner? It’s definitely intense but I don’t necessarily think that it’s moreso than what it was in 2017 or ‘18 when I ran in it. I think the thing about the XFINITY Series, as a competitive race as you’re talking about, is the aero package. We have a really good balance of motor/tire and downforce. The way that it shakes out is that it makes for a lot of comers and goers throughout these races. I know it hasn’t had a ton of success at the 0 4 4
Cup level, this style of package, but they’ve got a really fun racecar to drive here throughout the XFINITY Series field. Coming back here and having solid days, that’s what gives me the confidence to know that if I have the right opportunity, I could run full-time and still compete and do it for wins. I don’t know how many second place finishes I have in the XFINITY Series without winning a race. It’s gotta be the close to the most without ever winning. I wish we were in Victory Lane right now (at Kansas). But with the damage and stuff we had this weekend, you’ve gotta lick your wounds and we’ll take a second, go to the house, and try to build for the following weeks.

WAS KANSAS THE FINAL STRAW? This week, Danny B Needs a Minute to talk about the race this weekend at Kansas. And much like nearly every other fan who watched the race, Danny has plenty to say about the rules package and how it all played out on track. Joey Logano earned his way into the final four this weekend, but fans complained that he was able to block nearly every move from Harvick and others thanks to the low horsepower, high downforce rules package. Danny illustrates a comparison for us 0 4 8
using his own favorite Tennessee Vols football team. Will the mistake of the rules package cause him to stop watching NASCAR, or pull his support from the sport as a whole? Danny explains where he’s coming from. But that’s not all. Danny also takes us through the other top finishers, and checks in with his favorite driver, Alex Bowman, to find out his situation closing in to the final four. Find all of that and more in this week’s episode of Danny B Needs a Minute!

acing legend A.J. Foyt and NASCAR Cup Series champions Kurt Busch and Bobby Labonte are among the 103 competitors who have driven cars carrying No. 51 in NASCAR’s premier series. However, Gober Sosebee, a journeyman racer from Atlanta, Georgia, who competed at NASCAR’s highest level between 1949 and 1959, is the only driver to win a Cup Series race in car No. 51 – and he did it twice.

0 5 0
Sosebee’s first victory came on June 1, 1952, at Hayloft Speedway, a half-mile dirt track in Augusta, Georgia. Driving Sam Knox’s 1952 Chrysler, Sosebee started second and led the entire 154-lap distance in beating Tommy Moon to the checkered flag. Sosebee, driving his own No. 51 Oldsmobile, returned to Victory Lane on April 25, 1954, at Central City Speedway in Macon, Georgia. Sosebee led 58 of the 200 laps around the half-mile dirt track. Jack O’Brien, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was the first driver to use No. 51 in a NASCAR Cup Series race when he finished 38th in the Sept. 11, 1949, event at Pennsylvania’s Langhorne Speedway. Justin Allgaier has the most NASCAR Cup Series starts (75) in car No. 51 and Sosebee is second with 56. Allgaier’s time in car No. 51 came during his two-plus seasons with HScott Motorsports. Petty/Ware Racing currently fields the No. 51 Chevrolet with a rotating roster of drivers.
