RICHARD PETTY MOTORSPORTS GOT A STEAL In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp catches us up on the latest silly season news ahead of this week’s race at Texas. And the silly season news is definitely hot this week, as we finally got answers to two of the biggest questions for 2021 - where will Erik Jones go, and who will take the reigns of the No. 43 for Richard Petty Motorsports? Obviously, those questions answered themselves, with Erik Jones announcing this 0 0 4

week that he’ll be driving for RPM in 2021, taking over the iconic No. 43 now that Bubba Wallace has joined Denny Hamlin and Michael Jordan’s new team. Eric takes us through how this came to be, and how their performance might look on the track next year. But that’s not all. Eric also takes us through some of the other dangling threads of this week in NASCAR, plus he has some news about Texas this weekend. Find it all in this week’s episode of Out of the Groove!

THINGS TO WATCH AT TEXAS T

hey say everything’s bigger in Texas. That certainly goes for Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway, host to the second of three events in the Round of 8. While Joey Logano has little to be concerned about this weekend, having already punched a ticket to the Championship 4 with his victory in Kansas City, the other seven remaining championship hopefuls are under enormous pressure to make something big happen yet avoid potentially costly mistakes that could doom their championship aspirations altogether. Following are five things to watch for in the Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 500. BY JA RED TURNER

DRIVERS ON DEFENSE

A

long with Joey Logano, who solidified a berth in the Championship 4 race at Phoenix with his victory last weekend in Kansas, three other drivers are in the enviable position of being on the right side of the cutline for advancing to the season finale as title contenders. However, unlike Logano, these three drivers still have work to do. Kevin Harvick, who finished second to Logano as Kansas, is 41 points ahead of the cutline, while Denny Hamlin (+20) and Brad Keselowski (+8) have a much thinner cushion. It’s mathematically possible that all three could fall beneath the cutline with poor results this weekend in Texas, next weekend at Martinsville, or at both of the remaining races in the Round of 8. The bottom line? Harvick, Hamlin and Keselowski can’t get too comfortable and will certainly be looking over their shoulders at Texas as the four championship-eligible drivers on the wrong side of the cutline try to score a victory or narrow the gap.

JOLO ON CRUISE CONTROL

A

lready locked into the Championship 4 come whatever may, Joey Logano is under quite literally no pressure this weekend in Texas and next weekend at Martinsville. Because the four drivers who will compete for the championship in the season’s final event won’t carry any playoff points into that race, Logano has nothing tangible to gain or lose over the next two weekends. Basically, Logano can go out and simply focus on getting another win while his No. 22 Team Penske group starts looking ahead and preparing a race car for championship weekend in Phoenix. “The weight lifted off your shoulders is only part of it,” Logano said. “The ability to start working on your Phoenix car, not worry about your Texas and Martinsville car, is huge. I don’t want to say that, but you’re 100 percent focused on one more race. We know we can’t finish worse than fourth in points; you know what I mean? We know we’re in it.”

KURT BUSCH GOING FOR BROKE

A

fter suffering a blown engine and finishing 38th in last Sunday’s Round of 8 opener at Kansas, Kurt Busch has a tall hill to climb in order to be part of the Championship 4. Ranked last among the eight remaining title contenders and saddled 73 points in arrears of the cutline, Busch has virtually no chance of making up the ground he needs to make up to reach the Championship 4 on the basis of points. The Chip Ganassi Racing driver’s only real pathway forward is to win this weekend at Texas or the following weekend at Martinsville. But Busch, the 2004 NASCAR Cup Series champion, believes that he and his team are up for the challenge. “We knew we were going to have to win either Kansas or Texas,” he said. “Martinsville we have a shot at it, too. The odds are stacked against us, but, hey, we’re in the top eight for a reason. I have a great crew chief, Matt McCall, and we’ll bounce back.”

nlike Kurt Busch, whose only real shot at qualifying for the Championship 4 is winning one of the next two races, the three other drivers on the wrong side of the cutline have another viable pathway forward. That pathway is making up enough points over the next two weekends to leapfrog one or more of the drivers now in position to advance. Chase Elliott is currently just eight points behind Brad Keselowski — the current bubble driver — while Alex Bowman (-27) and Martin Truex Jr. (-31) have more ground to make up but are still within striking distance. A slip by Keselowski, Kevin Harvick or Denny Hamlin on Sunday at Texas could open up the door for Elliott, Bowman or Truex to ultimately be part of the Championship 4. “A lot of people said we were going to go out early in the playoffs,” Bowman said. “We’re still here fighting. I feel like we’re right there, right where we need to be.”

KEVIN HARVICK’S PURSUIT OF ANOTHER TEXAS TWO-STEP

A

winner of three of the last six races at Texas Motor Speedway, Kevin Harvick has every reason to be confident heading into Sunday’s 500-lap event. It also doesn’t hurt that the Stewart-Haas Racing driver owns a NASCAR Cup Series-high nine wins in 2020 and has been particularly potent this season at the mile-and-a-half tracks, of which Texas is one. “I feel better about Texas than I do Kansas,” Harvick said after leading the most laps but finishing runner-up to Joey Logano last weekend at Kansas Speedway. “Our guys did a pretty good job of bringing a whole lot better car than what we had at the first race. If our car’s that much better at Texas than it was the first race, it should be a good weekend.” Harvick has a wide enough gap on his pursuers that he likely doesn’t need to win either of the next two races to move on to the Championship 4; he mostly just needs to avoid major trouble.

RECAPPING JIMMIE JOHNSON’S NASCAR CAREER

■ Jimmie Johnson celebrates in victory lane after winning the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series AAA Texas 500 at Texas Motor Speedway on November 2, 2014.

AN UNDER-THE-RADAR WIN JIMMIE JOHNSON’S VICTORY AT TEXAS IN THE FALL OF 2014 WAS ALMOST A FOOTNOTE. BY JA RED TURNER

O

n the 83 occasions when Jimmie Johnson has won a pointspaying NASCAR Cup Series race, the Hendrick Motorsports driver has been the focus of most of the attention immediately afterward. Such was not the case, however, following the AAA Texas 500 at Texas Motor Speedway on November 2, 2014. Oh, Johnson deserved his share of the limelight, to be sure, after leading 191 of 341 laps and scoring what amounted to a convincing victory at the 1.5-mile track. But when all the dust finally settled that night in the Lone Star State, most of the buzz was not about Johnson’s win but rather a post-race fisticuffs on pit road between former series champions Brad Keselowski and Jeff Gordon. Lining up near the front of the field on the next-to-last restart, Keselowski and Gordon tangled when Keselowski’s No. 2 Team Penske Ford drifted up the track into Gordon’s No. 24 Hendrick Chevrolet, subsequently cutting Gordon’s tire down and costing the four-time champion driver the finish he deserved. The contact between Keselowski and Gordon happened just behind Johnson, who held the top spot over the final eight laps

and sped away to a half-second triumph over Kevin Harvick. Johnson, who won for the fourth time in 2014 but had already been knocked out of the playoffs, relished being able to steal some thunder from the playoff drivers all while acknowledging that it was the Gordon-Keselowski fight — not his win — that would steal the most headlines in the days to come. “I’m confident that tomorrow NASCAR will be on the front cover of every newspaper, and we’re trending on all the social stuff,” Johnson said. “Heck, you might even make it on the Today Show and some of the other mainstream television shows because there was the fight, there was crashing. That’s unfortunately what leads to those big headlines.” As opposed to simply winning a race in dominating fashion, which is what Johnson did at Texas.

TERRY LABONTE TAKES POPULAR TEXAS WIN IN 1999 BY ROB TIONGSON

W

ith a reputation as one of the toughest and treacherous tracks of the NASCAR Cup Series circuits, Texas Motor Speedway seemed to reward the tough, gritty drivers with a memorable win. On the flip side, the track had the notoriety of being absolutely brutal and physically taxing on those who went over that fine line. In some cases, a driver could bide their time but a problem with the tire or contact with a fellow racer meant a Texas sized impact into the wall of voodoo. For the 1999 500-miler held on March 28th, 1999, the sixth round of the season, it was memorable for the driver who earned a popular home state win as well as for the hard crashes involving drivers who typically stayed out of harm’s way. 0 2 0

While it was a potpourri of Cup stars starting in the top-10, Kenny Irwin, Jr., the pole sitter, seemed ready for a breakthrough win while Bobby Labonte, Steve Park, Terry Labonte, Ward Burton, Mark Martin, Ken Schrader, Jeff Gordon, Bill Elliott, and Wally Dallenbach, Jr. seemed ready to be in the mix. Compared to its first two races, it wasn’t as grinding in terms of attrition but the quiet start was quite a tease for competitors, teams, and fans. While Irwin led the opening 32 laps, the planned competition caution came out on Lap 32, bringing the field to pit road for the first stops of the day. Thanks to a fast and brilliant pit stop, Ken Schrader won the race off pit road and led from Laps 33 to 36, relinquishing the lead to Mark Martin on Lap 37. Despite a valiant and briefly successful challenge by Ward Burton for the top spot from Laps 38 to 40, Martin reassumed command of the race on Lap 41. Seemingly looking like a race that would head into a long green flag run, Jeff Gordon pounded the Turn 4 wall on Lap 71. Taking perhaps the hardest hit at the time of his career, Gordon took a moment to clamber outside of the car, grimacing with pain from his ribs and right scapula. “It’s pretty much the hardest I’ve ever hit the wall,” Gordon recalled

from the infield medical center. “Somehow, the right front tire went down. We’re not exactly sure why yet. “Thank goodness my team built a good racecar. Not only a fast racecar, but a safe one because I hit a ton. I’m real sore but I don’t think anything’s broken. I’ll be pretty stiff but we’ll be ready to go for Bristol.” Just 50 laps later, Mike Skinner hit the Turn 1 wall quite hard which brought out the race’s third caution period. Much like Gordon’s terrible Texas history, Skinner suffered another hard crash at this 1.5-mile venue, the second consecutive tough outing for the Susanville, Calif. native. “He lost the right front tire.” car owner Richard Childress remarked. “Just like last year, we blew a right front tire and went straight into the wall. He’s the luckiest, toughest guy I’ve been around. Right now, he’s got a broken shoulder blade. “He’s sitting up, he’s real alert, but they think his shoulder is broken. Other than that, he’s real alert. He says his neck feels good and no leg injuries this time. He’s a pretty tough guy.” On Lap 134, Turn 2 turned into a troublesome corner for Kevin

MEMORY LANE Lepage, Ken Schrader, John Andretti, Geoffrey Bodine, and Rick Mast as they wrecked to bring out the fourth caution period. Following a 13 lap green flag run from Laps 141 to 153, NASCAR threw the caution again for oil on the track. Setting up a Lap 160 restart, Joe Nemechek went for a spin cycle in the frontstetch to bring out a quick yellow on Lap 163. One of the race’s longest green flag runs started on Lap 167 as Ward Burton led the way. On Lap 217, trouble found “Mr. Consistency” otherwise known as Mark Martin as his No. 6 Valvoline Ford hit the Turn 1 wall. While Martin didn’t hit the Turn 1 wall as hard as Skinner, it was enough to bring out the yellow and essentially end his bid for the win. Once the field resumed green flag racing on Lap 221, it was a race to the checkered flag with 111 consecutive laps of clean and green at Texas. At this juncture, Terry Labonte found himself leading the way, losing the lead on Lap 281 once the final pit stops of the day ensued. As the lead lap 0 2 4

drivers cycled through this critical stop, Dale Jarrett was in the lead on Lap 285, seemingly ready to take his first win of the 1999 season. With Jarrett and Labonte getting around the backmarkers, the Corpus Christi, Texas native dogged Jarrett’s bumper, searching for the best line around the No. 88 car. The battle for the win was heating up in those final laps, as Labonte nearly touched Jarrett’s car in Turn 1, avoiding disaster. However, Labonte was done being a nice guy, powering into the lead with an incredible pass on the outside of Jarrett around the dogleg. Using the lapped cars as a pick, Labonte, a driver best known as “The Iceman,” lived up to his moniker as a cool customer in the closing circuits. Pulling away from Jarrett, Labonte’s win was clinched by Lap 332 when Jimmy Spencer crashed on the frontstretch. As there was no overtime rule back in 1999, Labonte

coasted to a jubilant Texas Victory Lane. As disappointed as Jarrett felt with a second place finish, third-place finisher Bobby Labonte had to be elated but sore on the physical side. All things considered, Labonte, who suffered a broken shoulder blade during a practice session at Darlington Raceway, raced through the pain with a fast, competitive car. Ultimately, the day belonged to Bobby’s older brother, Terry, who looked a bit different without his trademark, Alex Trebek looking mustache. “I’ve gotta thank all the guys in the crew,” Labonte said to CBS’ Ken Squier. “This Kellogg’s Chevy ran great all day long. We were really fast. I didn’t know if I could get past Dale (Jarrett) there at the end. He was awfully strong. 0 2 6

“We picked places to go test this year and I said, “I want to go here cause this is the race that I want to win. Besides Daytona, for me, coming here to Texas, this is awesome!” Moreover, it wasn’t just a special home state victory for the popular two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion. In this case, it was a moment to remember a departed friend and racing fan from Fayetteville, N.C. who fought a brave battle against leukemia. “I want to say hello to Andrew Jackson’s family, a good friend of the Hendrick family,” Labonte said. “He passed away and we were thinking about him. I want to say hi to them.” Without a doubt, while Labonte’s win came in overcast conditions, somewhere above those clouds, Jackson was likely watching over his Hendrick Motorsports allies with a smile.

MAKING THE CONNECTION

NICK OTTINGER TAKES TIMELY KANSAS ENASCAR VICTORY BY ROB TIONGSON

A

s Nick Ottinger may attest with the old racing adage, it’s not about leading the most laps but instead, it’s about leading the last lap. In the case of Tuesday night’s wild and eventful 216-miler around Kansas Speedway, the 18th round of the eNASCAR CocaCola iRacing Series season, it resembled more of a “Wild West” clash than a sim racing spectacle. Following Bobby Zalenski’s road course clinic at the Charlotte ROVAL that would’ve made Tom Emanski proud in terms of schooling athletes, his rivals looked forward to a simple Tuesday night drive around Kansas. Instead, it was more like tornado chasing in the Midwest,

especially for those battling for the three coveted championship race seeds. Needless to say, it’s easy to see how the top-eight in this series earned their place to battle for the most premier championship in the sim racing circles. While Nick Ottinger started from the pole, Keegan Leahy rolled off from

ESPORTS second while Zalenski (eighth), Jimmy Mullis (16th), Ryan Luza (27th), Ray Alfalla (11th), Garrett Lowe (24th), and Michael Conti (10th) were ready to make like Patrick Mahomes for this Tuesday night tussle. All told, Ottinger may have started from the pole but Leahy looked as dominant as he did during his crown jewel wins at Daytona, Indianapolis, and Darlington. Leading for 85 laps, it was evident that the 26-yearold Canadian was not going to mess around. In fact, the first majority of this race was relatively calm as if Bob Ross could’ve painted some happy little clouds while Leahy and his cohorts duked it out on the track. However, trouble ensued on Lap 137 when Brandon Hayse Kettelle and Justin Bolton tangled while battling for 27th spot, bringing out the caution flag. With Michael Guariglia leading a trio of drivers who stayed out due to running on a different fuel strategy, the race attempted a restart with two laps remaining before Corey VIncent and Bob Bryant collided, prompting another yellow that put the race into overtime. 0 3 6

Trouble found Leahy during this restart as he and Ottinger ran out of real estate in Turn 3, sending Leah hard into the Turn 3 wall with an absolutely destroyed No. 32 ride and to a disappointing 32nd place finish. Once the race resumed for the second and final overtime restart, Ottinger made moves that would make ESPN’s Chris Berman say his trademark, “Woop,” taking the lead from Guariglia. Coming to the stripe, Ottinger took a critical win ahead of Logan Clampitt, Bobby Zalenski, Ryan Luza, and Guariglia. Following the race, Ottinger took to his Twitter and said, “We are going to battle for a championship at Homestead! So proud of this Logitech G team! Can’t believe we are going to battle for

a championship! So much of the credit goes to everyone William Byron eSports including my teammate John Gorlinsky! What a feeling! The job is not finished!” On the final lap, there were countless multicar accidents that resembled scenes from Days of Thunder. However, the most exciting battle at the stripe was for the fourth spot, as Luza just barely bested Guariglia to the line. After his thrilling duel on the final lap, Guariglia tweeted, “P5!! We were so close to getting our first win. We had to roll the dice on tires and held on to the end for our solid finish. 0 3 8

The long run strategy played out awesome, leading laps and gaining track position.” As Ottinger crossed the stripe in first, Logan Clampitt, Bobby Zalenski, Ryan Luza, Michael Guarilgia, Jimmy Mullis, Ray Alfalla, Garrett Lowe, Nathan Lyon, and Malik Ray rounded out the top-10. While Ottinger joins Bobby Zalenski for the final four championship battle at HomesteadMiami Speedway, Jimmy Mullis and Ryan Luza hope to remain in the remaining two spots while Garrett Lowe, Keegan Leahy, Ray Alfalla, and Michael Conti hope to take a Texas triumph

Breanna O’Leary

BY ROB TIONGSON

Throughout the season, Rob Tiongson interviews various drivers and personalities in the world of NASCAR. Today, he catches up with Breanna O’Leary, a rear tire changer for Jimmy Means Racing’s No. 52 Chevrolet Camaro. ▶▶ Since NASCAR’s return, we haven’t exactly returned to normal but we’ve adjusted to a new normal with the COVID-19 pandemic. How’s things been with being a rear tire changer for the No. 52 team during these times? I feel like the standstill of when we weren’t racing was kind of tough because you didn’t know what was going to happen. But once we got back to racing, it wasn’t strange. NASCAR seamlessly made the transition from pre-COVID racing to racing during the COVID-19 pandemic. They kind of made the transition almost pretty seamless and now it’s kind of like that’s the normal. You have to roll with the punches especially in NASCAR. Changes are so often and everybody can see that. I think that this was a really big punch thrown our way. But there’s nothing you could do but do it. ▶▶ WIth the two month pause, it was a bit of a wait to get into the swing of things especially with the XFINITY race at Darlington. But once you returned, you got used to the protocols in place. When we eventually get back to normal, how welcoming will it be for you? I think it’ll almost be a breath of fresh air because it’s been so long. When you’re going through something like this, it feels like forever. I think it’ll be like, “Alright, this is what it was supposed to feel like and how it’s supposed to be like with fans there.”

IN THE HOT SEAT ▶▶ I feel like when we get to that point, all that buzz and excitement from my first race as a journalist will return for me. Nothing can ruin it. Right, just all that excitement of being back is so much that you’ll forget what worries you. ▶▶ Exactly, it’ll be great to be back at the track and cover races in person… As cliche as it sounds, you’ve had to sit back and it’s almost forced us to appreciate how things were like before and what we were able to do before. It put everything into perspective for us. ▶▶ What are some of the changes that you’ve had to go through with race weekend preparation give your busy schedule during the normal times? For me, I was pretty lucky to continue to work when everything was shutting down. Even my gym was able to put in a bunch of protocols where we were able to work out at home or at the gym. When NASCAR returned, we went into COVID protocols to continue practicing. Everything in my schedule, once we got back to racing, was pretty normal. Everything did come with all of these protocols whether it’s the pre-screenings to go to the track or the masks at practice and tracks. It’s almost like an assembly line when you get to the track. You find the entrance and once you get there, it’s a straight shot to your parking spot. Get checked in, go to the next station, get your temperature check, and then it leads you to the parking lot. I haven’t had to go through a huge whirlwind change. It’s been close to my normal schedule except with these protocols. 0 4 2

▶▶ An assembly line? That’s a neat analogy to describe your experiences at the track these days. Now, when you were figuring out how to maximize your time before NASCAR’s return, you did these awesome quarantine logs with your roommate. Whose idea was this? I’ve made some little vlogs here and there before the quarantine happened. But when I was home on the weekends, we were twiddling our thumbs thinking, “What do we do?” The weather was nice and we wanted to be outdoors. And I was like, “You know what? We’re going to make the best of it. I have plenty of time to sit down and edit videos so I was like, I’m going to make videos!”

ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: OCTOBER 22, 2020

mr.steak THE MAN - THE LEGEND - THE STEAKS

IN THE HOT SEAT ▶▶ You were a regular Martin Scorsese with these videos! I was impressed with it even if it was just for fun. I felt like folks got to see a different side of you aside from who they’ve seen at the track. Do you plan to bring it back once the season ends? I do! Actually, it’s crazy. So, I have a few videos that I started editing. I just get caught up. I feel like I’ve been, “Go, go, go.” But, I had a lot of fun with it and I even got some fun responses. I’ve gotta keep going! ▶▶ As a competitive athlete and tire changer, what are some things you feel you’ve improved on and what’s some things you want to work on as this year closes out? I definitely think the schedule, just trying to catch back up, it forced us, as a pit crew member, to have a short-term memory. Say, if you have a bad pit stop. You can’t dwell on it. You have to figure out what you did wrong and know what to do better, forget about it, and move on. You can’t carry it into the next pit stop. I think with our races being so crazy and being back-to-back with the schedule, it forced us to be mentally tough. You know that you’re going to have another opportunity and another pit stop. So you have to remind yourself that you have a clean slate with every pit stop. Just going back-to-back for so long when we were catching up just emphasized that philosophy.

▶▶ Now, this weekend, you’ll be recognized with the NBC Pit Crew All-Stars for the Texas XFINITY Series race telecast. How humbling and cool is it to get this recognition considering your journey into NASCAR? It’s cool and humbling...just with it being the Texas race makes it so special. Texas is home and it always will be. Just to be recognized for my hard work and the hard work that everyone has put into me to get me where I am is just really special. ▶▶ In your second consecutive season with Jimmy Means’ No. 52 team, you’ve been working with driver Kody Vanderwal. What’s it been like to return to the team and work with Kody this year? I think with Kody coming in as a rookie, it’s been cool. We’ve been able to see his progress. You’re listening to everything and you get to hear him learn and you get to hear him 0 4 6

understand things throughout the season and you get to see his improvements as you’re with him the whole season. Like the way he’d come into the pit box, he was kind of timid. Now, it’s like an overnight change where it clicked one weekend and he pulled in like he’d been doing this forever. We all just looked at each other after that pit stop like, “Holy cow, he’s pulling into this box so well now.” Just to be with one driver, especially a rookie, you get to see the progression the whole season so it’s actually been cool to be a part of that. ▶▶ That has to be great to work with the same driver on a consistent basis and see Kody progress and grow in front of you. It must make the race weekends truly enjoyable. We have a lot of fun, pit crew wise and with our driver. We just have a lot of fun.

DRIVER Q&A

JUSTIN BONSIGNORE TOPS THE WHELEN MODIFIED TOUR ONCE AGAIN BY JOSEPH WOLK IN

For the second time in three years, Justin Bonsignore is the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion. The driver of the No. 51 machine captured three triumphs en route to securing the modified title ahead of Jon McKennedy by 40 points. Bonsignore finished all nine races inside of the top five, dominating the shortened season. ▶  WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE TO BE A TWOTIME MODIFIED TOUR CHAMPION? “It’s pretty special. The first one was pretty special, as well, back in 2018 with the season we had. To get back to winning another championship is important. It shows we can contend year-in and year-out, going out to execute it, especially with COVID and the short season.” ▶  WHAT WENT SO SMOOTHLY THIS YEAR WITH THIS TEAM? “My crew chief Ryan Stone brings great cars every week. My owner Ken Massa provides us with whatever we need from an ownership side of things. That makes it that much easier. Our cars are well-prepared and they unload 0 5 0

very quick. We had a lot of good racing luck, getting to the end of each race and being in position to contend for a win or a top five.” ▶  HOW DIFFICULT WAS THIS YEAR WITH THE LATE START AND SHORT SEASON? “It was tough for sure. We were sitting there wondering when we would get started. Our cars were ready to go before everything got shut down. We were supposed to race about a week after everything shut down. The wondering and waiting part of it was stressful. You get aggravated at times. But once racing got started, we were in good position to race week-in and week-out. Once races were scheduled, it was business as usual to go to the track and try to win each week.”

KYLE LARSON REINSTATED TO NASCAR As Danny B says in his latest video, we now have more answers than we have questions when it comes to the fate of Kyle Larson next year. This week, Danny brings us his reaction to the news that NASCAR has accepted Kyle Larson’s application to be fully reinstated into the sport as of 2021. Danny takes us through not only the incident that led to Kyle Larson’s suspension, but also all the work and process that Larson 0 5 2

has been through since his comments on air during the iRacing event earlier this year. How has Larson come to terms with what he’s done, and how will it affect him going forward? But that’s not all. Danny also takes us through some of the other drama playing out amongst the teams here in the closing days of silly season. Who might be going to SHR next year, or in the years to come? OFFICIAL NASCAR MEMBER’S CLUB Q&A

LOOKING TO 2021 FOR THE OFFICIAL NASCAR MEMBERS CLUB BY DA N GUT TENPL A N

L

iz Errick has had her challenges this year as the leader of the Original NASCAR Members Club VIP track team. She had big plans for 2020 -- as her club planned to offer more perks for ONMC members at tracks across the country. Due to the restrictions on fan engagement at tracks due to COVID-19, most of those opportunities have been postponed. Errick, who is also in charge of marketing for the Original NASCAR Members Club, recently joined ROAR for a Q&A to look ahead to 2021. ▶  DO YOU HAVE ANY SENSE OF WHAT LIES AHEAD FOR THE ONMC IN 2021? “We want to be able to put out a schedule that adheres to the protocols. We usually go to the Daytona 500, but we have no idea if we’ll be able to do that. It’s all up in the air.” ▶  AT WHAT OTHER TRACKS WILL YOU TRY TO OFFER OPPORTUNITIES FOR FANS? “Looking ahead at the schedule, there are some new tracks and races. We want to include as many as we can. One standout one is the Circuit of Americas track in Austin, Texas. We’d love to do the dirt track events, but Bristol is too small, so we can’t do that one. This year, we planned to have the double at Pocono on the schedule. That’s something we’d love to include next year. And, of course, we’ll make it over to Phoenix for the championship.”

0 5 4

ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: OCTOBER 22, 2020

■■ ONMC marketing director Liz Errick

▶  WILL YOU STILL OFFER REMOTE/ VIRTUAL PERKS FOR MEMBERS IN 2021? “We offer as much as we’re able virtually. We’re working with a lot of sponsors that we worked with in the past. We’ll see if we can include some of our members in virtual events. The exclusivity is a big bonus of being a member. We’re trying to be creative and offer as much as we can.” ▶  WHAT WERE SOME OF THE OTHER OPPORTUNITIES YOU PLANNED TO OFFER THIS YEAR? “We had a series of ideas, and we were pretty much given the go-ahead from NASCAR. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to go ahead with it. If we wind up at tracks next year, we want to offer opportunities for fans to wave the green flag during practice. We’d like to give our members a chance to join the parade laps during driver intros as well.”
