t’s four drivers, one race and one dream. And the stakes couldn’t be any higher. When the checkered flag waves on Sunday’s season-ending showdown at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr. or Joey Logano will be crowned 2018 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion. The champion, quite simply, will be the driver who finishes best among the four finalists; there are no playoff points or stage points to be earned, at this point, for

the quartet of contenders. In each of the four seasons since NASCAR implemented a “winner-take-all” finale for its top series, the driver who won at Homestead was a part of the Championship 4. So, if history means anything, the driver who leaves South Florida on Sunday night with the championship hardware in hand will also be the first driver to the checkered flag. In terms of preparation for the big race, the contenders claim it’s business as usual.

“You don’t do anything different,” said Harvick, the 2014 series champ. “Win or lose, it’s the same prep every week.” Said Logano: “It’s just another race.” Good luck picking a “favorite” among this year’s cast of title contenders. Collectively, the four drivers lead the sport in all the major statistical categories this season and have captured 22 of the season’s 35 trophies, with Harvick and Busch leading the way with eight victories apiece. Truex has just four victories, compared to twice as many for Harvick and Busch, but is the reigning series champion who for the second year in a row is the sentimental favorite — this time because his team,

Furniture Row Racing, is set to disband due to lack of funding beyond 2018. “It’s exciting for us, I think, to be in this position again,” said Truex, who also reached the Championship 4 in 2015. “This is our third trip to Homestead in four years, which I think is something we’re all really proud of as a group, and obviously with it being our last race together as a complete group, it’s definitely going to be a

special weekend. “You know, all we can do is prepare the best we can and do the same thing that we’ve done down there before and just try our best. That’s all you can do at the end of the day.” Logano, despite having the lowest win total this season among the four finalists, has arguably been the most rocksolid in the 2018 playoffs and was actually the first driver to punch a ticket to Homestead. “Fifteen weeks ago, I said

▶▶ Based on his stellar resume this season at the mile-and-a-half tracks, Kevin Harvick heads to Homestead as the odds-on favorite to win the 2018 championship. But will he suffer from the absence of suspended crew chief Rodney Childers? ▶▶ Three years ago, Kyle Busch won the race and the championship at Homestead. Last season, Busch finished second at Homestead and was the championship runner-up. Fresh off a win at Phoenix, Busch has momentum on his side this time. ▶▶ Before finishing out his remarkable fiveyear run with Furniture Row Racing, Martin Truex Jr. is determined to earn a second consecutive championship in NASCAR’s premier series. While Truex won’t be the favorite at Homestead, he certainly has what it takes to get the job done. ▶▶ The only member of the Championship 4 who has yet to capture a title in NASCAR’s premier series, Joey Logano is the clear underdog among the quartet of title contenders. ichard Petty, the oldest son of NASCAR pioneer Lee Petty, did much more than carry on a family tradition as he became one of the most successful and popular figures in motorsports history. Born on July 2, 1937, in Level Cross, North Carolina, Petty grew up in the sport. After years of working on his fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cars, Richard Petty made his first NASCAR Cup Series start

on July 18, 1958, in Richard Petty during his induction into the Toronto, Ontario, NASCAR Hall of Fame in launching a record- 2010. NASCAR premier series championships and he is the only person to win the Daytona 500 seven times. His most successful season came in 1967 when he won 27 races, including 10 in a row. Petty ended his driving career on Nov. 15, 1992, at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Since stepping out of the cockpit, he has remained active in NASCAR as a car owner and an ambassador. Richard Petty Motorsports currently fields the No. 43 Chevrolet driven by Bubba Wallace. Petty was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame as part of the inaugural class in 2010.

cott Brewer, car chief for Roush Fenway Racing and driver Ricky Stenhouse, saw his first race when he was only 2 weeks old while at Pocono Raceway. He happily recalls years of watching his father, former Cup series crew chief Tim Brewer, turn wrenches on Chevrolets driven by champions Cale Yarborough and Darrell Waltrip. After high school graduation in 1998, Scott was set on making his own career in insurance and finance, but decided to answer the call to race and keep the family tradition alive.

“I went to college at N.C. State in mechanical engineering but graduated from UNC Charlotte with a degree in finance, “Scott said. “I was going to go to work in the real world, but ended up working for my Dad ay several places through the years. I figured out you can make a pretty good living in here and felt I was good at it, so I pursued racing.” Scott’s time as a go-kart racer in his teens and Late Model racer while in college helped to shape his present career. He lives in a world where past experience is very helpful. “The fun part is the competitive nature of the sport,” Scott said. “You always try to do better than the people beside you. You’re always trying to make your equipment as good as possible with all the resources you have. It’s gotten to the point where the box we play in is so defined. Overall, the package is so tight it’s hard to take a 15th-place car and win with it anymore. You really have to be on your game to the best of your abilities to execute to pull off a top-five or top-10. “Today, the car chief does the mechanical side of it and the crew chief (Brian Pattie) does the engineering and managerial work. He’s a great leader and makes sure we have all the tools and information we need (and) relies on me to carry out the day to day stuff.”

This month, Dr. Cormier answered a series of questions about his preferred concussion evaluation tool, the I-Portal Portable Assessment System (I-PAS). ▶▶ What impact do you think the implementation of the I-PAS will have on NASCAR? “We always want to make sure it’s more of a help to NASCAR than a scare. We’re not trying to pull drivers out of the car. We’re trying to help them feel better so they perform better.” ▶▶ How does the I-PAS compare with other concussion tests? “From the standard of detecting and diagnosing oculomotor, vestibular and reaction time deficiencies, it takes the subjectivity out of the hands of the examiner. It gives us good information about what is

SPOTLIGHT going on in the brain without the subjectivity of some exams, or without an athlete trying to trick a certain test.” ▶▶ Will a driver go through baseline testing at the start of the season so that the test will detect discrepancies from those metrics head impacts? “You don’t need any baseline testing. The system is able to track and develop a data bank of what’s normal for people of a certain age group. It can alter some of the parameters. When dealing with racecar drivers, it considers that their reflex timing and reaction timing is going to be quicker than the average population. Once you establish a normal value for a particular sport, you can test and see variances when there’s some sort of issue.” ▶▶ How is the test administered? “You put these goggles on, and you have the ability to make sure your vision is completely clear. You can see the stimuli. Then you follow the stimuli. It’s testing the functionality of smooth pursuits and looking for stagnants. Blurred vision isn’t a part of it. It will find what’s going on in the microscopic function of the brain. Say you’re having difficulty looking to your left. If we find that’s where the deficit is occurring, then we can focus on those areas to rehab and get where they need to be.” ▶▶ When do you expect to administer this test to racecar drivers? After races? “This isn’t necessarily going to take the place of a clinician’s medical acumen. If a driver didn’t lose consciousness and his car wasn’t altered, he’s going to continue to drive. A driver won’t come off the track for testing. If the car flips or collides, then I see the utility in using this. IndyCar has already started to use this at the track. For NASCAR and ARCA, from what we’ve been told, it doesn’t look like it will be an issue, but we haven’t been given the green light yet.”

n Nov. 16, 2014, Kevin Harvick, driver of the No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet, went to Homestead-Miami Speedway as a Final Four driver eligible to race for the coveted Cup series championship. The Bakersfield, Calif. native did so by leading 54 of 267 laps including the final eight circuits to win the Ford Econo Boost 400 and his first career title. He sealed the deal by holding off Ryan Newman of RCR Enterprises to claim his 28th of 45 career victories. “For sure it’s an incredible feeling of accomplishment,” Harvick said during his

champion’s interview. “…I dreamed about being a race car driver and, at the time, winning a Winston Cup Championship … and being able to fulfill your lifelong dream and reality is something that a lot of people can’t really say that they’ve ever done.” Harvick, crew chief Rodney Childers and team owner Tony Stewart decided early in the season that taking chances in critical situations was the only way to win NASCAR’s biggest prize. “In the end, it turned out you had to go for broke just to be competitive,” Harvick said. “That’s really what this format has turned every week into over the last 10 weeks. If you want to win the championship, you’re going to have to figure out how to win races, and in the end, that’s what it came down to was winning this race.”

SPOTLIGHT Stadium: A crane involved in Hard Rock Stadium’s renovation required new hydraulic hoses, which were installed by Pirtek.

“They really didn’t want to wait until the hoses blew, so they called us to replace those, too,” said Carlos Shortt, owner of PIRTEK Doral since it opened in October 2015. PIRTEK technicians can perform all the necessary hose work from their Service & Supply Vehicles, where they customize the hoses and fittings onsite. Onsite hose replacement saves customers time, getting critical equipment up and running again after a hose failure. The proactive hose inspection was consistent with Shortt’s philosophy of serving customers in the long term – not just during emergencies. “We want to build relationships with the customer, so it’s more than just doing one job for them,” he said. “We want to tell them, ‘We’ll be here for you, you can count on us.’ They can be confident that we’ll do all the work in the long term, not just in the moment.” At the time PIRTEK performed that hose

work on the crane, the stadium was called Sun Life Stadium. Soon afterward, it was renamed Hard Rock Stadium – its current name. It also hosts the Orange Bowl and is the former home of the Florida Marlins Major League Baseball Team.

ixteen drivers qualified for the 2018 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, with entry based on having a win or their position in the standings following the 26-race regular season While baseline point totals are reset equally heading into the playoffs, a driver earns five playoff points for every race win, and one playoff point for every stage win, during the regular season. Drivers can continue to amass playoff points once the playoffs commence, adding to their regular season totals. A driver’s playoff points carry over to each new round – except the Championship Round – provided he is still championship-eligible. The driver leading the point standings at the end of the regular season starts the playoffs with an additional 15 playoff points. In fact, the top-10 drivers in points after the regular season are all awarded playoff points on a descending scale. The number of playoff drivers in contention for the championship decreases after every three playoff races, from 16 to start the playoffs; 12 after playoff Race No. 3; eight after playoff Race No. 6; and four after playoff Race No. 9.

A win by a championship-eligible driver in any playoff race automatically clinches the winning driver a spot in the next round. The positions for each round that aren’t filled based on wins in the previous round are filled based on point totals at the end of the previous round. The first three races of the playoffs are known as the Round of 16 and are held this year at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Richmond Raceway and the ROVAL at Charlotte Motor Speedway, respectively. The ROVAL, a new 17-turn road course where the field of championship-eligible drivers decreases to 12, is the first of three playoff elimination races. The next three races make up the Round of 12 and are held at Dover International Speedway, Talladega Superspeedway and Kansas Speedway, respectively. At Kansas, the playoff field is whittled to eight. Martinsville Speedway, Texas Motor Speedway and ISM Raceway make up the Round of 8, which culminates with four drivers leaving Arizona in title contention. The champion is the highest finisher among the four title contenders in the Championship 4 race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
